Abstract Seabirds are known to ingest, become entangled in, and incorporate items of marine litter into nests, resulting in risks of injury and mortality events. Published literature for seabird interactions with marine litter is increasingly available worldwide but is generally lacking for the Caribbean region. Here, I report on observations of marine litter used as nesting material by Brown Noddies (Anous stolidus) and on incidental entanglement in the Grenadines, West Indies. Abstract: Coastal sea surveys off eastern Guadeloupe, French West Indies, in 2001–2008 showed the presence of Black-capped Petrel (Pterodroma hasitata). The species occurs in small numbers from October to March, peaking from November to January. Such a seasonal appearance coincides with the species’ breeding calendar, suggesting that these birds may belong to the small breeding population recently rediscovered in nearby Dominica. The presence of this rare and endangered species in French waters off Guadeloupe has to be taken into account in national conservation policy. Ce calendrier de présence coïncide avec le cycle reproducteur de l’espèce, suggérant que ces oiseaux pourraient appartenir à la petite population nicheuse récemment redécouverte sur l’île voisine, la Dominique. La présence de cette espèce rare et menacée dans les eaux territoriales françaises de la Guadeloupe doit être prise en compte dans la politique nationale de conservation. In the tradition of the quinquennial census of seabirds in the Migratory Bird Sanctuaries along Québec’s North Shore, which began in 1925, this paper presents the results of the first three seabird censuses of the Gaspé Peninsula conducted in 1979, 1989, and 2002, with an emphasis on the third census and on changes in seabird populations that occurred between the second and third censuses. In 1979 the population of seabirds was estimated at 134,163 birds, and this increased 72% to 231,186 birds in 1989. The upward trend in population continued in the 1990s but less sharply. The 2002 census recorded 279,276 birds, a 21% increase over the second census. The seabird community of the Gaspé Peninsula comprises 14 species. In each of the three censuses, three species accounted for over 75% of the total seabird population: Northern Gannet, Black-legged Kittiwake, and Common Murre. Between 1989 and 2002, Common Eider, Northern Gannet, Great Cormorant, Ring-billed Gull, Razorbill, and Black Guillemot increased in numbers, whereas Herring Gull, Black-legged Kittiwake, and Common Tern all suffered declines. Populations for Double-crested Cormorant, Great Black-backed Gull, and Common Murre all remained stable. Very small populations (<25 birds) of Leach’s Storm-Petrel and Atlantic Puffin have been recorded during the censuses at only one location, Bonaventure Island. In the 2002 census there were no petrels observed, neither of adults nor of active burrows.À l’instar des inventaires quinquennaux des oiseaux marins dans les refuges d’oiseaux migrateurs de la Côte-Nord, entrepris en 1925, cet article présente les résultats des trois premiers inventaires complets des oiseaux de mer nicheurs en Gaspésie, menés en 1979, 1989 et 2002. Une attention particulière est mise sur le statut des espèces d’après le troisième inventaire, et sur les tendances des populations entre les deux derniers inventaires. Les populations de Cormoran à aigrettes, Goéland marin et Guillemot marmette sont demeurées stables. Les petites populations (<25 oiseaux) d’Océanite cul-blanc et de Macareux moine n’ont été vues durant ces inventaires qu’à l’île Bonaventure. Abstract The Bermuda Islands, a 57-km² atoll-like archipelago located at 32°19'N, 64°45'W, are the only truly oceanic islands in the northwestern Atlantic. Accounts of seabirds nesting at the time of settlement in the early 17th century suggest that several tern species, including the Brown Noddy (Anous stolidus), Sooty Tern (Onychoprion fuscatus), Bridled Tern (O. anaethetus), Least Tern (Sternula antillarum), Roseate Tern (Sterna dougallii), and Common Tern (S. hirundo), might have been nesting on the islands. By the time that scientific documentation began in the mid-19th century, only the Roseate and Common Terns were confirmed to have survived, but overzealous collecting extirpated the Roseate Tern. The Common Tern survived into the 20th century and with legal protection has continued to nest on small rocky islets in sheltered sounds and harbors; one pair of Roseate Terns recolonized in 2018. This paper reviews historic records of terns, together with recent observations of transient migrants and nest-prospecting vagrants, including data from a 69-yr study of Common Terns (DBW unpubl. data), combined with data of other observers. These records provide some indication of the species that nested in Bermuda in pre-colonial times and which might be most amenable to restoration using modern conservation techniques. They also shed some light on the processes and timespans for recolonizations of remote oceanic islands by seabirds following their extirpation by humans. Résumé À Saint-Nicolas, dans le détroit de Québec, des sables de courants de marée de la transition Pléistocène-Holocène contiennent une faune marine fossile exceptionnelle : 34 types d'invertébrés en plus des microfossiles, 3 de mammifères, 3 d'oiseaux et 5 de poissons, d'âge au 14 C compris entre 10 060 et 9810 BP (δ 13 C = 0 ‰). Ils sont recouverts par des tidalites qui marquent la phase ultime de la Mer de Champlain, jusque vers 9750 BP. L'ensemble des données lithologiques, géochimiques et paléontologiques évoque une sédimentation dans un archipel situé à l'entrée de la Mer de Champlain, soumis à des marées de l'ordre de 5 à 10 m d'amplitude. Les forts courants de marée montante ont favorisé le maintien tardif d'apports d'eaux salées. L'archipel a protégé les unités de l'érosion pendant le reflux des marées ainsi que de l'érosion fluviatile ultérieure liée au relèvement glacio-isostatique. La diversité faunique est associée à une forte productivité marine, liée au mélange des eaux douces et salées. La chaîne alimentaire allait de mollusques abondants à marée basse à des poissons, au morse, à des phoques et à des oiseaux qui nidifiaient sur les îlots rocheux. Le maintien de ce système sédimentaire et écologique implique une stabilisation du niveau marin relatif attribuée à la remontée eustatique du début de l'Holocène. La comparaison des âges au 14 C de coquilles marines et de bois permet d'évaluer l'effet du carbone inorganique dissous dans la Mer de Champlain. Les âges des coquilles marines (δ 13 C = 0 ‰) sont vieillis d'au moins 350 ans par rapport aux âges de matériel terrestre (δ 13 C=-25 ‰) en position stratigraphique équivalente.

We present a range of observations on the reproductive morphology, pollination biology and cultivation of Lodoicea maldivica (coco de mer), an endangered species with great ecological, economic and cultural importance. We review the history of study of this charismatic species. Morphological studies of the male inflorescence indicate its importance as a year-round food source to the Seychelles fauna. In situ observations suggest a number of potential biotic and abiotic pollination mechanisms including bees, flies, slugs, and geckos; trigonid bees are identified as the most likely potential natural pollinator. We outline a successful programme for ex situ pollination, germination, and cultivation of the coco de mer, highlighting the importance of temperature, humidity and light levels as well as maintaining an undisturbed environment. In combination with continued protection and monitoring, this advice may aid the future in situ and ex situ conservation of the coco de mer.

AbstractA mouse monoclonal antibody reacting in ELISA with a synthetic peptide representing a linear amino acid stretch of the protein antigen was tested on all overlap ping 5-mer to 9-mer fragments of the peptide, as prepared by multi-pin synthesis. Analysis of the binding data suggests that several residues in the peptide might be relatively unrelevant for recognition, while few others seem to play a critical role as key residues. On the basis of such observations, we attempted to reconstruct an alternative essential epitope by introducing multiple amino acid substitutions in the 9-mer peptide exhibiting the best binding activity, and then tested its ability to be recognized by the monoclonal antibody.

Abstract Introduction Although many novel therapeutic agents have been explored, multiple myeloma (MM) remains an incurable hematopoietic malignancy. Mer receptor tyrosine kinase (Mer TK) is a member of the TAM (Tyro3, Axl and Mer) family and is involved in the progression of several human malignancies. Inhibition of Mer expression reduces pro-survival signaling, increases chemosensitivity in vitro, and delays tumor progression in vivo. These observations make Mer TK inhibitors to excellent candidates for targeted therapies. We show here for the first time that Mer TK is ectopically expressed in MM cells and test the response of MM cell lines to our previously described small molecule Mer inhibitor, UNC1062, a substituted pyrazolopyrimidine. Here we demonstrate the biochemical and biologic effects of treatment with UNC1062, which suggests efficacy of Mer inhibitors as a novel strategy for the treatment of MM. Methods: Western blot analysis was used to determine expression of the TAM receptors and to evaluate inhibition of Mer TK activation and downstream signaling by UNC1062 in MM cell lines. UNC1062-mediated anti-myeloma activity with or without bortezomib was determined using short-term (MTT) and long-term (colony-formation) assays. Cleaved PARP and caspase 3 were detected by western blot analysis as indicators of apoptosis. Results: Western blot analysis of protein extract from MM cell lines showed that four (RPMI8226, U226, AMO-1 and KMS-12BM) out of six lines (66.6%) express Mer TK protein at varying levels, with AMO-1 expressing the least and U226 expressing the most. The MM cell lines OPM-2 and NCI-H929 did not express Mer TK. UNC1062 potently inhibits Mer TK activity in vitro (Mer IC50= 1.1 nM, Morrison Ki = 0.33 nM). In cell-based assays, treatment with UNC1062 inhibited accumulation of phospho-Mer and downstream signaling through ERK and Stat5 in U226 cells. UNC1062 also reduced proliferation and/or survival in Mer TK-expressing RPMI8226 cells (IC50 = 0.98 ± 0.14 μM, n=7) and U226 (IC50 = 0.28 ± 0.09 μM, n=3) cells. Treatment with UNC1062 did not lead to a meaningful reduction of metabolically active cells in Mer-negative NCI-H929 and OPM-2 cells. In contrast, UNC1062-treated Mer-positive MM cells exhibited increased levels of cleaved caspase 3 and cleaved PARP confirming apoptosis induction. Treatment with UNC1062 (100 nM) resulted in a statistically significant, dose-dependent decrease in colony-formation in methylcellulose compared to control cultures in Mer-positive RPMI8226 cells (418 ± 23 vs. 291 ± 37 colonies, p = 0.04, n = 3). No significant reduction of colony formation was observed in Mer-negative OPM-2 cells. Treatment of U226 cells with UNC1062 (800 nM) in combination with bortezomib resulted in a statistically significant reduction in relative cell number compared with bortezomib alone (0.61 ± 0.06 vs 0.41 ± 0.06, p = 0.04, n =3). Conclusion: Mer TK is ectopically expressed in the majority of investigated MM cell lines. UNC1062 treatment of Mer TK positive MM cells inhibits Mer TK activity and downstream signaling, mediates anti-neoplastic activity in liquid culture, and decreases colony-formation in methylcellulose. In addition, UNC1062 treatment sensitizes MM cells to bortezomib. Taken together, these data support further development of Mer TK inhibitors as novel MM therapy alone and in combination with bortezomib. Disclosures: No relevant conflicts of interest to declare.

Abstract Urbanization has introduced novel materials for nesting birds, including anthropogenic debris that may be dangerous to adults and nestlings (e.g., entanglement or ingestion leading to injury or mortality). We present two observations of incorporation of man-made materials into passerine nests on St. Eustatius, Caribbean Netherlands. This is the first publication of such observations for St. Eustatius, and addresses a gap in literature that acknowledges the use of anthropogenic litter by landbirds in the wider Caribbean. Presentamos dos observaciones de la incorporación de materiales hechos por el hombre en nidos de paseriformes en San Eustaquio, Caribe Neerlandés. Esta es la primera publicación de este tipo de observaciones para esta isla y llena un vacío en la literatura que reconoce el uso de basura antropogénica por parte de las aves terrestres en el Caribe. ABSTRACT Mammalian myeloid and epithelial cells express various peptide antibiotics (such as defensins and cathelicidins) that contribute to the innate host defense against invading microorganisms. Among these peptides, human cathelicidin CAP18/LL-37 (L1 to S37) possesses not only potent antibacterial activity against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria but also the ability to bind to gram-negative lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and neutralize its biological activities. In this study, to develop peptide derivatives with improved LPS-neutralizing activities, we utilized an 18-mer peptide (K15 to V32) of LL-37 as a template and evaluated the activities of modified peptides by using the CD14+ murine macrophage cell line RAW 264.7 and the murine endotoxin shock model. By replacement of E16 and K25 with two L residues, the hydrophobicity of the peptide (18-mer LL) was increased, and by further replacement of Q22, D26, and N30 with three K residues, the cationicity of the peptide (18-mer LLKKK) was enhanced. Among peptide derivatives, 18-mer LLKKK displayed the most powerful LPS-neutralizing activity: it was most potent at binding to LPS, inhibiting the interaction between LPS and LPS-binding protein, and attaching to the CD14 molecule, thereby suppressing the binding of LPS to CD14+ cells and attenuating production of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) by these cells. Furthermore, in the murine endotoxin shock model, 18-mer LLKKK most effectively suppressed LPS-induced TNF-α production and protected mice from lethal endotoxin shock. Together, these observations indicate that the LPS-neutralizing activities of the amphipathic human CAP18/LL-37-derived 18-mer peptide can be augmented by modifying its hydrophobicity and cationicity, and that 18-mer LLKKK is the most potent of the peptide derivatives, with therapeutic potential for gram-negative bacterial endotoxin shock.

Single crystals of d(CTCCTSCCGCGCG)·d(CGCGCGGAG) have been grown by the vapor-diffusion method using 2-methyl-2,4-pentanediol as a precipitant. The crystals are tetragonal, space group P42, with unit-cell parameters a = b = 53.8, c = 43.1 Å, and diffract to 1.8 Å resolution at a synchrotron X-ray beamline. In the crystal, the asymmetric unit contains one copy of the construct. The two halves of the structure are related by non-crystallographic twofold symmetry. These observations are consistent with the conclusion that the sequences of the 12-mer and 9-mer oligonucleotides form a duplex DNA at one end and a triplex DNA at the other end.

Ferritins are iron storage proteins assembled from 24 subunits into a spherical and hollow structure. The genomes of many bacteria harbor genes encoding two types of ferritin-like proteins, the bacterial ferritins (Ftn) and the bacterioferritins (Bfr), which bind heme. The genome of P. aeruginosa PAO1 (like the genomes of many bacteria) contains genes coding for two different types of ferritin-like molecules, ftnA (PA4235) and bfrB (PA3531). The reasons for requiring the presence of two distinct types of iron storage protein in bacterial cells have remained largely unexplained. Attempts to understand this issue in P. aeruginosa through the recombinant expression of the ftnA and bfrB genes in E. coli host cells, coupled to the biochemical and structural characterization of the recombinant 24-mer FtnA and 24-mer BfrB molecules, have shown that each of the recombinant molecules can form an Fe3+-mineral core. These observations led to the suggestion that 24-mer FtnA and 24-mer BfrB molecules coexist in P. aeruginosa cells where they share iron storage responsibilities. Herein, we demonstrate that P. aeruginosa utilizes a single heterooligomeric 24-mer Bfr assembled from FtnA and BfrB subunits. The relative content of the FtnA and BfrB subunits in Bfr depends on the O2 availability during cell culture, such that Bfr isolated from aerobically cultured P. aeruginosa is assembled from a majority of BfrB subunits. In contrast, when the cells are cultured in O2-limiting conditions, the proportion of FtnA subunits in the isolated Bfr increases significantly and can become the most abundant subunit. Despite the variability in the subunit composition of Bfr, the 24-mer assembly is consistently arranged from FtnA subunit dimers devoid of heme and BfrB subunit dimers each containing a heme molecule.

El objetivo de este trabajo fue actualizar el inventario de las aves en diferentes localidades y hábitats de San Vicente y las Granadinas. En las 25 localidades muestreadas se detectaron 89 especies, de ellas, 54 se encuentran en Reservas Forestales, Jardines Botánicos y Áreas de Importancia para las Aves (IBAs) que por su grado de protección deben garantizar la existencia de las poblaciones de aves registradas para el país. Se registraron 28 de las especies de aves más significativas por su endemismo y grado de amenaza. Entre ellas están el Zumbador Crestado (Orthorhyncus cristatus), la Cotorra de San Vicente (Amazona guildingii), la Bijirita Silbadora (Catharopeza bishopi) y el Semillero Gorjirrojo (Loxigilla noctis). Durante los muestreos realizados se detectaron 45 especies de aves acuáticas, de las cuales, 25 pertenecen al orden Charadriiformes. Se pudo comprobar la importancia de Cayo Milligan y Battowia Island para la nidificación de aves acuáticas. En Battowia Island nidifica la mayor colonia mixta de estas aves. Our objective was to update knowledge of bird distribution and status in various localities and habitats of the islands. Abstract The binding capacity of large sets of peptides corresponding to naturally occurring sequences and carrying previously defined A24-specific motifs was analyzed. It was found that only a minority (9-25%) of the motif-carrying peptides bound the relevant HLA-A molecule with good affinity (IC 50% < or = 50 nM), while the majority of them bound only weakly or not at all (IC 50% > or = 500 nM). By correlating the presence of specific residue types at each position along the peptide sequence with average binding affinity, the prominent influence of specific secondary interactions (secondary anchor residues) was revealed. Moreover, secondary interactions appeared to be size-dependent in that the specific effects detected differed in 9-mer and 10-mer peptide sets. Based on these observations, A24-specific refined motifs were also established for both 9-mer and 10-mer ligands, and their merit was verified by testing the binding capacity of independent sets of synthetic peptides. Such refined motifs should facilitate accurate prediction of potential A24-restricted peptide epitopes. It was also noted that certain crucial secondary interactions appear to be remarkably similar in the case of A24 and other HLA-A molecules previously analyzed (A*0201, A3, A11, and others). This may reflect contributions to binding affinity of relatively invariant residues located within the polymorphic pockets of the HLA binding groove.

ABSTRACTWe present the glacier-wide summer surface mass balances determined by a detailed hydrological balance (sSMBhydro) and the quantification of the uncertainties of the calculations on the Argentière and Mer de Glace-Leschaux drainage basins, located in the upper Arve watershed (French Alps), over the period 1996–2004. The spatial distribution of precipitation within the study area was adjusted using in situ winter mass-balance measurements. The sSMBhydro performance was assessed via a comparison with the summer surface mass balances based on in situ glaciological observations (sSMBglacio). Our results show that the sSMBhydro has an uncertainty of ± 0.67 m w.e. a−1 at Argentière and ± 0.66 m w.e. a−1 at Mer de Glace-Leschaux. Estimates of the Argentière sSMBhydro values are in good agreement with the sSMBglacio values. These time series show almost the same interannual variability. From the marked difference between the sSMBhydro and sSMBglacio values for the Mer de Glace-Leschaux glacier, we suspect a significant role of groundwater fluxes in the hydrological balance. This study underlines the importance of taking into account the groundwater transfers to represent and predict the hydro-glaciological behaviour of a catchment.

SUMMARY The transposon Tn21 and a group of closely related transposons (the Tn21 family) are involved in the global dissemination of antibiotic resistance determinants in gram-negative facultative bacteria. The molecular basis for their involvement is carriage by the Tn21 family of a mobile DNA element (the integron) encoding a site-specific system for the acquisition of multiple antibiotic resistance genes. The paradigm example, Tn21, also carries genes for its own transposition and a mercury resistance (mer) operon. We have compiled the entire 19,671-bp sequence of Tn21 and assessed the possible origins and functions of the genes it contains. Our assessment adds molecular detail to previous models of the evolution of Tn21 and is consistent with the insertion of the integron In2 into an ancestral Tn501-like mer transposon. Codon usage analysis indicates distinct host origins for the ancestral mer operon, the integron, and the gene cassette and two insertion sequences which lie within the integron. The sole gene of unknown function in the integron, orf5, resembles a puromycin-modifying enzyme from an antibiotic producing bacterium. A possible seventh gene in the mer operon (merE), perhaps with a role in Hg(II) transport, lies in the junction between the integron and the mer operon. Analysis of the region interrupted by insertion of the integron suggests that the putative transposition regulator, tnpM, is the C-terminal vestige of a tyrosine kinase sensor present in the ancestral mer transposon. The extensive dissemination of the Tn21 family may have resulted from the fortuitous association of a genetic element for accumulating multiple antibiotic resistances (the integron) with one conferring resistance to a toxic metal at a time when clinical, agricultural, and industrial practices were rapidly increasing the exposure to both types of selective agents. The compendium offered here will provide a reference point for ongoing observations of related elements in multiply resistant strains emerging worldwide.

Objective To determine whether maintenance energy requirement (MER) to maintain stable body weight (BW) is substantially lower for spayed female cats than for sexually intact female cats and to assess whether an equation commonly used to estimate MER would accurately predict caloric need in spayed cats. Design Prospective study. Animals 10 spayed and 5 sham-operated young adult female cats. Procedure During an acclimatization period, initial daily food allowance was determined by estimating MER as 1.4 × (30 × BW + 70), then adjusted weekly to maintain BW within 200 g of baseline. Ovariohysterectomy (OHE) or sham laparotomy was performed at week 7, and the study was continued for 15 additional weeks (period 1). To correct for a presumptive effect of continued musculoskeletal growth that resulted in some cats becoming unacceptably thin during period 1, the study was repeated over an additional 10 weeks (period 2), using a new estimate of MER calculated from BW measured after reestablishing normal body condition. Results Substantial restriction in food allowance was necessary to prevent BW gain in the OHE group during both periods. Caloric intake of spayed cats in dietary balance was significantly lower than that of control cats at the end of each study period. Sexually intact cats appeared to self-regulate food intake, whereas spayed cats tended to eat all food available to them. Significant differences were not detected between OHE and control groups in observations of physical activity before or after surgery. The equation used to predict caloric needs overestimated the apparent MER for spayed and sexually intact cats. Clinical Implications Ad libitum feeding of spayed cats may be inadvisable, and careful monitoring of food allowance, relative to body condition, is suggested to prevent excessive weight gain. Abstract Despite their sociocultural and economic value, seabird populations have dramatically declined, in part due to overexploitation. Although seabird harvest is not as common worldwide as it was historically, partly because of protective laws, illegal harvest still occurs, particularly in tropical developing nations. In Grenada, seabird harvest could partly explain the decline of seabird colonies. Our objective was to determine if fishers and recreationists engage in seabird harvest in the Grenada Grenadines and, if so, which sociodemographic factors may be associated with harvesting seabirds. We designed a 64-question survey that we made available at the Fisheries Division office of Sauteurs, Grenada, for 6 weeks each year (15 June to 30 July) from 2015 to 2017. Although respondents claimed that harvesting is a tradition that infrequently occurs today, survey responses and anecdotal evidence suggest seabird harvest still occurs. Continued seabird harvest, combined with other threats (e.g., livestock grazing), could prove detrimental to existing Grenadine seabird colonies. Interestingly, respondents who have collected or eaten seabirds seem unaware of laws that protect seabirds from hunting, which are especially restrictive during the breeding season. Therefore, we recommend establishing a community-based monitoring program that 1) empowers fishers and recreationists through education and awareness of seabird harvest, 2) provides a patrolling presence on islands previously neglected, and 3) ensures continuity of seabird data collection in the Grenada Grenadines. Nous avons conçu un questionnaire de 64 questions que nous avons mis à disposition au bureau des pêches de Sauteurs, à la Grenade, chaque année pendant 6 semaines (du 15 juin au 30 juillet) de 2015 à 2017. Bien que les répondants aient affirmé que la chasse aux oiseaux marins constituait une tradition ancienne et était devenue rare de nos jours, certaines de nos observations (p. ex. un seau d’œufs) suggèrent que cette pratique a toujours lieu. La poursuite de la chasse aux oiseaux marins, combinée à d’autres menaces (p. ex. le pâturage du bétail), pourrait s’avérer préjudiciable aux colonies d’oiseaux marins des Grenadines. Il est intéressant de noter que les répondants ayant prélevé ou mangé des oiseaux marins ne semblaient pas connaître les lois qui protègent ces espèces de la chasse et qui sont particulièrement restrictives pendant leur saison de reproduction. Par conséquent, nous recommandons d’établir un programme communautaire de suivi des colonies qui 1) responsabilise les pêcheurs et les plaisanciers à travers l’éducation et la sensibilisation sur la chasse aux oiseaux marins; 2) assure une présence de patrouille sur des îles jusque-là non surveillées; et 3) permette la continuité de la collecte de données sur les oiseaux marins des îles des Grenadines de la Grenade. Abstract: The continuation of long-term avifaunal surveys conducted on St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, from August 2004 through July 2012 (8 yr) resulted in new information on 87 species, 67 of which are rare to uncommon. However, our emphasis is on site-specific documentation of 16 rare to common breeding waterbirds and 3 columbids. We also provide documentation for individuals of 10 waterbird and 1 falcon species marked in North or South America or the Caribbean that were re-sighted or recovered on St. Croix. Four individuals of two of these species (Whimbrel (Numenius phaeopus) and Ruddy Turnstone (Arenaria interpres)) migrated to St. Croix more than once. We fully document vagrant and rare transient avian species that have occurred on St. Croix fewer than 10 times and rare to uncommon species that otherwise are of historical interest. We include five species previously unknown on St. Croix: Curlew Sandpiper (Calidris ferruginea), Great Black-backed Gull (Larus marinus), Black-billed Cuckoo (Coccyzus erythropthalmus), Greater Ani (Crotophaga major), and Fork-tailed Flycatcher (Tyrannus savana). Some noteworthy occurrences of rare to uncommon species were influenced by weather events. Using current data in conjunction with past records, published and unpublished, we assess changes in the status of avian species on St. Croix with respect to site-specific environmental changes. Although documented changes in the status of birds on St. Croix were sometimes the result of increased observer effort, some changes in species status were real. Some real positive changes were associated with a general increase in rainfall over the past decade. Avian species that increased in abundance and distribution since 2002 include eight waterbirds, one resident columbid, two partial migrant columbids, and one migrant parulid. While we found no clear evidence of any negative declines since 2002, species that showed a negative decline since the 1980s include one migrant larid, and three migrant landbirds, all forest species. Abstract. Alpine glaciers are shrinking and rapidly loosing mass in a warming climate. Glacier modeling is required to assess the future consequences of these retreats on water resources, the hydropower industry and risk management. However, the performance of such ice flow modeling is generally difficult to evaluate because of the lack of long-term glaciological observations. Here, we assess the performance of the Elmer/Ice full Stokes ice flow model using the long dataset of mass balance, thickness change, ice flow velocity and snout fluctuation measurements obtained between 1979 and 2015 on the Mer de Glace glacier, France. Ice flow modeling results are compared in detail to comprehensive glaciological observations over 4 decades including both a period of glacier expansion preceding a long period of decay. To our knowledge, a comparison to data at this detail is unprecedented. We found that the model accurately reconstructs the velocity, elevation and length variations of this glacier despite some discrepancies that remain unexplained. The calibrated and validated model was then applied to simulate the future evolution of Mer de Glace from 2015 to 2050 using 26 different climate scenarios. Depending on the climate scenarios, the largest glacier in France, with a length of 20 km, could retreat by 2 to 6 km over the next 3 decades.

This article was prepared from a project assigned in a graduate class, BME 7371, Failure Assessment of Medical Devices, taught at Wright State University by the senior author. The device was donated for the study which was successfully retrieved after 93 days in-vivo. Even-though the mechanical integrity of the device held in-tact, the microscopic observations revealed that the damage via corrosion and scratching took place on the surface of the device. The image reconstructed in 3D using image-J software to determine device roughness and depth-of-pits. Results presented in this paper show that damage starts developing in these devices after the implantation that resulted in premature failure in many cases as reported in the media and literature.

RÉSUMÉ A Rivière-du-Loup, sur la rive sud de l'estuaire du Saint-Laurent, la transgression marine postglaciaire (Mer de Goldthwait), qui a eu lieu entre 12,5 et 12,8 ka. a atteint un niveau voisin de 135 m d'altitude. Le relèvement isostatique a été très rapide. Vers 9000 ans BP, 85 % de l'emersion des terres était déjà réalisé. Trois coupes levées au droit de schorre supérieur actuel ont permis de mettre en évidence l'existence d'un bas niveau marin au milieu de l'Holocène suivi d'une transgression mineure d'une amplitude indéterminée, mais vraisemblablement de l'ordre de ± 8 m. En effet, un dépôt organique relique, daté de 6200 ± 100 à 7140 ± 70 BP et reposant sur des sédiments argileux de la Mer de Goldthwait, est recouvert de sédiments intertidaux limono-sableux stratifiés contenant des colonies de Mya arenaria en position de vie, datées de 5610 ± 90 à 5700 ± 90 BP. La terrasse Mitis (niveau de ± 6m d'altitude) a été construite entre 3000 et 1500 ans BP. alors que le schorre supérieur, qui surmonte un substrat de sable fin et de limon stratifiés en lits minces (ancienne slikke) daté d'environ 850 ans BP, est une construction intertidale relativement récente: moins de 300 ans BP. Ces données corroborent les faits mis en évidence dans cinq autres sites de la rive Sud de l'estuaire du Saint-Laurent.

Des plates-formes de cryoplanation développées dans des schistes ordoviciens dans la région de Rimouski sont décrites. La cryoplanation, étroitement liée à l’action de la glace de mer pendant le long hiver, est active dans les parties supérieure et moyenne de l’estran rocheux, notamment à la pointe à la Cive, au promontoire de l’Orignal, au cap du Caribou, à la pointe aux Cenelles, et, à un moindre degré, à la pointe Mitis. La nature et le pendage vertical des schistes constituent des facteurs favorables. Une cryoplanation littorale s’est également exercée au cours de l’Holocène au droit de la terrasse Mic Mac, alias Mitis, sise en arrière du rivage actuel. Elle a succédé à des agents de planation antérieurs qui ont tronqué des parties de crêtes appalachiennes sur les rives de l’estuaire du Saint-Laurent, et est remplacée par des processus marins azonaux au niveau de basse mer. Là où elle a été observée, c’est certainement un puissant facteur d’érosion. Des cordons de gros blocs rencontrés au niveau des basses mers sont décrits dans la seconde partie. Le site principal, à Sacré-Coeur-de-Rimouski, est décrit en détail et sert de point de référence pour les autres sites de la côte sud. Des observations faites à l’époque de la débâcle montrent que ces cordons de basse mer sont dus à des apports de cailloux par radeaux de glace échoués à ce niveau parce qu’ils ne peuvent atteindre le haut de l’estran alors occupé par un pied de glace résiduel. Cette explication diffère de celle proposée pour expliquer les cordons glaciels de basse mer le long de la côte du Labrador.

Abstract. Harmonized time series of column-averaged mole fractions of atmospheric methane and ethane over the period 1999–2014 are derived from solar Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) measurements at the Zugspitze summit (47° N, 2964 m a.s.l.) and at Lauder (45° S, 370 m a.s.l.). Long-term trend analysis reveals a consistent renewed methane increase since 2007 of 6.2 [5.6, 6.9] ppb yr−1 at the Zugspitze and 6.0 [5.3, 6.7] ppb yr−1 at Lauder (95 % confidence intervals). Several recent studies provide pieces of evidence that the renewed methane increase is most likely driven by two main factors: (i) increased methane emissions from tropical wetlands, followed by (ii) increased thermogenic methane emissions due to growing oil and natural gas production. Here, we quantify the magnitude of the second class of sources, using long-term measurements of atmospheric ethane as tracer for thermogenic methane emissions. In 2007, after years of weak decline, the Zugspitze ethane time series shows the sudden onset of a significant positive trend (2.3 [1.8, 2.8] × 10-2 ppb yr−1 for 2007–2014), while a negative trend persists at Lauder after 2007 (−0.4 [−0.6, −0.1] × 10-2 ppb yr−1). Zugspitze methane and ethane time series are significantly correlated for the period 2007–2014 and can be assigned to thermogenic methane emissions with an ethane-to-methane ratio of 10–21 %. We present optimized emission scenarios for 2007–2014 derived from an atmospheric two-box model. From our trend observations we infer a total ethane emission increase over the period 2007–2014 from oil and natural gas sources of 1–11 Tg yr−1 along with an overall methane emission increase of 24–45 Tg yr−1. Based on these results, the oil and natural gas emission contribution C to the renewed methane increase is deduced using three different emission scenarios with dedicated ranges of methane-to-ethane ratios (MER). Reference scenario 1 assumes an oil and gas emission combination with MER = 3.3–7.6, which results in a minimum contribution C > 28 % (given as lower bound of 99 % confidence interval). For the limiting cases of pure oil-related emissions with MER = 1.7–3.3 (scenario 2) and pure natural gas sources with MER = 7.6–12.1 (scenario 3) the results are C > 13 % and C > 53 %, respectively. Our results suggest that long-term observations of column-averaged ethane provide a valuable constraint on the source attribution of methane emission changes and provide basic knowledge for developing effective climate change mitigation strategies.

Les oiseaux rendent d’importants services écologiques nécessaires au bien-être de l’homme. En Côte d’Ivoire, l’essentiel des études ornithologiques se sont déroulées au sud, et accessoirement au centre et au centre-ouest. En outre, très peu de travaux ont porté sur les zones humides. La ville de Korhogo abrite des barrages à vocation agro-pastorale qui n’ont été l’objet d’aucune étude. Pour combler ce manque de connaissance, une étude a été menée de février 2016 à janvier 2017. L’objectif de ce travail est d’évaluer la richesse spécifique et de déterminer l’influence des saisons sur la distribution qualitative de la communauté des oiseaux du barrage urbain de Koko dans la commune de Korhogo. Pour ce faire, des observations directes, utilisant la méthode des transects ponctuée d’arrêts d’environ 15 minutes, ont été effectuées. Les résultats indiquent que cette communauté est constituée de 63 espèces d’oiseaux appartenant à 32 familles et regroupées en 14 ordres. Globalement, l’ordre des Passériformes et la famille des Ardeidae sont les mieux représentés. Du point de vue de leur statut biogéographique, les espèces résidentes (37 individus : 59 %) et accidentelles (23 individus : 36,51%) sont majoritaires. Le plus grand nombre d’espèces a été observé en saison des pluies (52 individus : 82,54%). Sept espèces ont été spécifiques de la saison sèche alors que trois espèces sont caractéristiques de la saison des pluies. Les espèces résidentes ont été les nombreuses en toute saison. Au niveau structural, les espèces accessoires, les espèces assez-fréquentes et les espèces fréquentes ont été les mieux représentées en saison sèche tandis que les espèces assez-fréquentes ont été majoritaires en saison des pluies. Cette étude confirme la distribution des communautés des oiseaux selon les saisons. ABSTRACT Birds provide important ecosystem services necessary for human well-being. In Côte d'Ivoire, ornithological studies were carried out in the south, central and central-west. In addition, very little work has been done on wetlands. The Commune of Korhogo is home to agro-pastoral dams that have not been studied. To fill in this gap of information, a study was conducted from February 2016 to January 2017. The aim of this study was to assess the specific richness and to examine the effect of seasons on the qualitative distribution of the Koko urban dam birds’ community. Direct observations using the method of line transects with a 15 minutes points were carried out. Results show that this community consists of 63 species of birds belonging to 32 families and grouped in 14 orders. Globally, the order of the Passeriformes and the family of Ardeidae were the best represented. In terms of their biogeographical status, resident species (37 individuals: 59%) and accidental species (23 individuals: 36.51%) were dominant. The high number of bird species was observed during the rainy season (52 individuals: 82.54%). Seven species were specific to the dry season while three species are characteristic of the rainy season. Resident species were numerous in all seasons. The accessory and relatively frequent species have been the most abundant during the dry season while the fairly frequent species were predominant in the rainy season. This study confirms the distribution of bird communities according to the seasons.

The importance of wetlands as habitat and breeding grounds for waterfowls is recognized and has been extensively studied, but their role in regulating and maintaining ecosystems is less well documented. The use of wetlands by invasive species such as Common myna (Acridotheres tristis), considered as one of the 100 worst invasive species in the world, is largely unknown. Therefore, the Common mynas could have an influence on the occupation of native water bird species. The objectives of this study were to assess Common myna's (1) population size, (2) spatial occupation and (3) characteristics of foraging and roosting sites. Three urban wetlands in Antananarivo were studied: the Tsarasaotra Park, a private site classified as a Ramsar site, the Tsimbazaza Zoological and Botanical Park in the city center, and an area near the Ikopa River, close to the SOCOBIS biscuit factory. In total, 6196 Common mynas were counted with an estimated 7.9 individuals per hectare around the roosting sites. Vigilance and foraging behaviors were less observed when individuals were at a higher stratum, with communication and resting being the most observed behaviors at this level. Only 5.6% of wetlands are used during the day as foraging areas and 1.4% as roosting sites at night, where Common mynas cohabitate with herons and egrets. Finally, the environmental variables collected revealed that Common mynas favor wetlands with tall, wide trees, located far from human disturbance. L’importance des zones humides en tant qu’habitat et site de reproduction pour les oiseaux d’eau est reconnue et a été abondamment étudiée. Cependant, le rôle des oiseaux d’eau dans la régulation et le maintien d’écosystème est moins bien documenté. Particulièrement l’utilisation des zones humides par des espèces envahissantes telles que le Martin triste (Acridotheres tristis), une des 100 pires espèces envahissantes dans le monde, reste peu étudiée. Le Martin triste pourrait avoir une influence et un impact par son occupation et son comportement envahissant sur les oiseaux d’eau autochtones. Afin d'évaluer la taille de la population du Martin triste, son utilisation et occupation spatiale, ainsi que les caractéristiques écologiques de ses zones d’alimentation et de dortoir, trois zones humides du milieu urbain d’Antananarivo ont été étudiées. Il s’agit du Parc de Tsarasaotra, un site privé classé RAMSAR, le Parc Zoologique et Botanique de Tsimbazaza dans le centre-ville, et une zone située à proximité de la rivière Ikopa, près de l’usine de fabrication de biscuits SOCOBIS. Un nombre de 6196 observations de Martins tristes ont été réa- lisées et l'abondance des populations a été estimée à 7.9 individus par hectare autour des dortoirs. Les observations ont aussi révélé que le Martin triste réduit certains comportements tels que la vigilance et l’alimentation lorsqu’il est à une hauteur plus élevée et privilégie alors des comportements de communication et de repos. Il utilise 5,6% des zones humides pendant la journée en tant que site de nourrissage et 1,4% pendant la nuit comme dortoir, où il cohabite avec des hérons et des aigrettes. Les varia-bles environnementales récoltées sur les sites ont révélé que le Martin triste privilégie les zones humides situées loin des perturbations humaines et présentant de grands arbres à diamètre important.

SummaryFrom mid-August to late October 1988, Marojejy Strict Nature Reserve, in the northern part of Madagascar's rainforest, was surveyed for birds. The reserve extends from 75 to 2,133 m altitude and the 60,150 ha comprise an almost intact series of altitudinal forest zones. Observations were made in all forest zones and at all altitudes of the reserve and the total of 104 species found included almost all Madagascan rainforest birds, making Marojejy one of the most important sites for bird conservation in Madagascar. The status of the eight threatened, 10 near-threatened and two restricted-range species observed is detailed here, together with notes on their ecology and behaviour. Finds of major conservation interest included the first documented sighting of Madagascar Serpent-eagle Eutriorchis astur since 1930, a healthy population of Henst's Goshawk Accipiter henstü, all four rainforest ground-rollers Brachypteracüdae and a new population of Yellow-bellied Sunbird-asity Neodrepanis hypoxantha. Furthermore, the patchy distribution of Helmetbird Euryceros prevostü urges reconsideration of its current assessment as not at risk. Four threatened species (Rufous-headed Ground-roller Atelornis crossleyi, Yellow-bellied Sun-bird-asity, Grey-crowned Greenbul Phyllastrephus cinereiceps and Madagascar Yellowbrow Crossleyia xanthophrys) were found only in the upper montane forests; this apparent altitudinal preference for three of these species had not been suggested before this survey. The major threat to the birds of Marojejy is the ceaseless piecemeal clearance of the reserve's forest, which is proceeding inwards from the boundary.De la mi-aout a la fin octobre 1988, une etude sur les oiseaux a été menee dans la Reserve Naturelle Integrate de Marojejy, situee dans le nord de la foret equatoriale de Madagascar. La reserve s'etend sur une altitude allant de 75 a 2,133 metres et sa superficie de 60,150 ha abrite une serie de forets d'altitude restees pratiquement intactes. Des observations ont 6te faites dans toutes les zones foresrieres et a toutes les altitudes de cette reserve et les 104 especes d'oiseaux trouvees incluaient presque toutes les especes d'oiseaux de la foret tropicale de Madagascar, la reserve de Marojejy representant ainsi l'un des sites de conservation des oiseaux les plus importants de Madagascar. La situation des huit especes menacees, dix especes presque menacees et deux especes a distribution geographique limitee, observees au cours de l'etude, est decrite ici en detail, avec des notes sur leur ecologie et leur comportement.Parmi les decouvertes particulierement interessantes pour la conservation, nous pouvons citer la premiere observation documented de l'aigle-autour Eutriorchis astur depuis 1930, une population bien developpee de Accipiter henstü, l'ensemble des quatre types forestieres de Brachypteracüdae et une nouvelle population de Neodrepanis hypoxan-tha. De plus, la repartition geographique inegale de YEuryceros prevostü exige une reconsideration urgente de son evaluation actuelle en tant qu'espece sans risque. Quatre especes menacees (Atelornis crossleyi, Neodrepanis hypoxantha, Phyllastrephus cinereiceps et Crossleyia xanthophrys) n'ont été trouvees que dans les forets de haute altitude: l'apparente preference de ces trois especes pour les hautes altitudes n'avait pas été suggeree avant cette etude. Breakup between Greenland and Canada resulted in oceanic spreading in the Labrador Sea and Baffin Bay. These ocean basins are connected through the Davis Strait, a bathymetric high comprising primarily continental lithosphere, and the focus of the West Greenland Tertiary volcanic province. It has been suggested that a mantle plume facilitated this breakup and generated the associated magmatism. Plume-driven breakup predicts that the earliest, most extensive rifting, magmatism and initial seafloor spreading starts in the same locality, where the postulated plume impinged. Observations from the Labrador Sea–Baffin Bay area do not accord with these predictions. Thus, the plume hypothesis is not confirmed at this locality unless major ad hoc variants are accepted. A model that fits the observations better involves a thick continental lithospheric keel of orogenic origin beneath the Davis Strait that blocked the northward-propagating Labrador Sea rift resulting in locally enhanced magmatism. The Davis Strait lithosphere was thicker and more resilient to rifting because the adjacent Paleoproterozoic Nagssugtoqidian and Torngat orogenic belts contain structures unfavourably orientated with respect to the extensional stress field at the time.RÉSUMÉLa cassure entre le Groenland et le Canada a entraîné une expansion océanique de la mer du Labrador et de la baie de Baffin. Ces bassins océaniques sont reliés par le détroit de Davis, un haut bathymétrique constitué principalement de lithosphère continentale et de la province volcanique tertiaire de l'ouest du Groenland. Il a été suggéré qu'un panache du manteau a facilité cette cassure et généré le magmatisme associé. L’hypothèse d’une cassure produite par panache du manteau prédit que la première distension océanique, la plus importante, le magmatisme et l'expansion océanique initial se produisent là où le panache mantélique touche la croûte continentale. Or les observations dans la région de la mer du Labrador–baie de Baffin ne correspondent pas à ces prédictions. Et donc l'hypothèse du panache ne fonctionne pas dans cette région à moins que des facteurs ad hoc déterminants ne soient présents. Un modèle qui correspond mieux aux observations présuppose la présence d’une épaisse quille lithosphérique continentale d'origine orogénique sous le détroit de Davis qui aurait bloqué l’expansion océanique de la mer du Labrador vers le nord, ce qui aurait provoqué une augmentation du magmatisme localement. La lithosphère du détroit de Davis était plus épaisse et plus résistante à l’expansion océanique parce que les bandes orogéniques paléoprotérozoïques du Nagssugtoqidian et de Torngat renferment des structures défavorablement orientées par rapport au champ de contraintes d’extensions de l'époque.

Genome size is one of the fundamental cytogenetic features of a species, which is critical for the design and initiation of any genome sequencing projects and can provide essential insights in studying taxonomy, cytogenetics, phylogenesis, and evolutionary studies. However, this key cytogenetic information is almost lacking in the endemic species Reseda pentagyna and the locally rare species Reseda lutea in Saudi Arabia. Therefore, genome size was analyzed by propidium iodide PI flow cytometry and compared to k-mer analysis methods. The standard method for genome size measures (flow cytometry) estimated the genome size of R. lutea and R. pentagyna with nuclei isolation MB01 buffer were found to be 1.91 ± 0.02 and 2.09 ± 0.03 pg/2 °C, respectively, which corresponded approximately to a haploid genome size of 934 and 1.022 Mbp, respectively. For validation, K-mer analysis was performed on both species’ Illumina paired-end sequencing data from both species. Five k-mer analysis approaches were examined for biocomputational estimation of genome size: A general formula and four well-known programs (CovEST, Kmergenie, FindGSE, and GenomeScope). The parameter preferences had a significant impact on GenomeScope and Kmergenie estimates. While the general formula estimations did not differ considerably, with an average genome size of 867.7 and 896. Mbp. The differences across flow cytometry and biocomputational predictions may be due to the high repeat content, particularly long repetitive regions in both genomes, 71% and 57%, which interfered with k-mer analysis. GenomeScope allowed quantification of high heterozygosity levels (1.04 and 1.37%) of R. lutea and R. pentagyna genomes, respectively. Based on our observations, R. lutea may have a tetraploid genome or higher. Our results revealed fundamental cytogenetic information for R. lutea and R. pentagyna, which should be used in future taxonomic studies and whole-genome sequencing.

Despite the important ecological roles of commercial bêche-de-mer holothuroids in coral reef ecosystems their reproductive biology is poorly studied, including on the Great Barrier Reef (GBR). We investigated reproduction of Stichopus herrmanni, a commercially important species listed as Vulnerable, at One Tree Island, southern GBR. Gonad index, histology and spawning observations indicated an annual reproductive cycle with gamete release in the Austral spring and summer (November–February), as for populations of this species at a similar latitude in New Caledonia. Stichopus herrmanni releases gametes episodically, spawning multiple times during summer. Assimilation of spawning observations from OTI and elsewhere along the GBR and tropical Pacific revealed that gamete release by S. herrmanni is influenced by the lunar cycle, with spawning taking place around the new moon in summer. This species is an aggregative spawner with a behavioural change to attain elevated positions on the reef at dusk prior to spawning. After the spawning season, gametes remaining in the gonads are reabsorbed. Spent gonads completely lacked gametes. There was a quiescence in gonad development in winter with an absence of gonads in some specimens, indicating an aestivation-like period for reproduction. By late-winter (August) recovery stage gonads were distinguished by the initiation of gametogenesis, which coincided with increasing temperature and day length. Our findings contribute to the understanding of the reproductive biology of S. herrmanni, a consideration for future fisheries management in the protection of this Vulnerable species, especially with respect to the increasing global trade in bêche-de-mer.

Background: Mother's milk is a natural food that is good for babies because breast milk has many advantages containing important substances that make babies develop optimally. Along with the development of medical science, experts find ways to increase milk production, namely pharmacological and non-pharmacological methods. One of the non-pharmacological methods is the marmet technique. Marmet technique is a technique used to express breast milk. This technique provides a relaxing effect and also reactivates the milk ejection reflex (MER) so that the milk begins to drip. With the activation of MER, the milk will often spray out by itself. The purpose of this activity is to increase knowledge and understanding of the benefits of the marmet technique on the smooth flow of breast milk. Methods: service is carried out using counseling methods, demonstrations and observations of the marmet technique. Results: from education conducted on 20 postpartum mothers, it was found that there was an increase in knowledge of postpartum mothers from poor knowledge to good and 20 postpartum mothers experienced an increase in breast milk expenditure from 20 postpartum mothers experienced an increase in milk production by 18 people (90%).

Les récifs des Gardes sont trois barres rocheuses parallèles qui affleurent dans la baie de Wissant, sur l’estran pour l’une d’entre elles (R1) et en mer pour les deux autres (R2 et R3), lors des marées basses de vives eaux. La première ligne de rochers (R1) visible sur la plage correspond aux Grès verts albiens. La nature lithologique et l’âge des deux autres barres récifales sont restés inconnus jusqu’à présent et l’attribution des récifs des Gardes aux sables verts apto-albiens dans les première, puis seconde éditions de la carte géologique à 1/50 000 de Marquise est purement spéculative. Une visite effectuée en 2021 sur les récifs situés en mer révèle que la barre rocheuse médiane (R2) est constituée d’un grès glauconieux à ciment carbonaté aptien, tandis que la troisième (R3), la plus éloignée du rivage, correspond à des calcaires gréseux tithoniens. Ces observations inédites révèlent que les tracés sous-marins de la feuille de Marquise au 1/50 000 seront à modifier lors d’une future révision, la plus grande partie des terrains attribués aux Sables verts apto-albiens (n5-6) dans la baie de Wissant correspondant en réalité à des formations jurassiques.

Le développement des capteurs satellitaires d'observation des traceurs géophysiques à la surface de l'océan et les algorithmes de traitement associés ont connu un essor important au cours des vingt dernières années. Les différents capteurs satellitaires disponibles présentent des résolutions spatiales et temporelles différentes ainsi que différents niveaux de sensibilité à la couverture nuageuse. Dans le cas des images de température de surface de la mer, ceci se traduit notamment par de forts taux de données manquantes dans les observations de très haute-résolution (de l'ordre de 1kmx1km) contrairement aux observations de basse-résolution (de l'ordre de 25kmx25km). Il existe donc un enjeu fort pour exploiter conjointement les différentes sources d'information disponibles. Dans ce contexte, nous proposons un nouveau modèle stochastique de super-résolution basé sur une augmentation réaliste de l'information texturale des images. L'originalité de ce modèle réside dans la formulation d'a priori stochastiques sur la géométrie des images, qui sont caractéristiques des textures associées aux champs géophysiques à la surface de l'océan. Formellement, ce modèle consiste à modéliser les lignes de niveau de l'image comme des réalisations de marches aléatoires. Ce modèle stochastique s'étend naturellement à la simulation d'images haute-résolution à partir d'une observation basse-résolution. Cet article décrit la formulation mathématique du modèle proposé, ses caractéristiques théoriques ainsi que le schéma numérique mis en oeuvre pour la super-résolution d'images texturées. L'application à la simulation haute-résolution de champs de température de surface de la mer dans une région active de l'océan (courant des Aiguilles) démontre sa pertinence dans le contexte applicatif de la télédétection satellitaire de l'océan. L'Arctique est la région du globe qui s'est réchauffée le plus vite au cours des trente dernières années, avec une augmentation de la température de surface environ deux fois plus rapide que pour la moyenne globale. Le déclin de la banquise arctique observé depuis le début de l'ère satellitaire et attribué principalement à l'augmentation de la concentration des gaz à effet de serre aurait joué un rôle important dans cette amplification des températures au pôle. Cette fonte importante des glaces arctiques, qui devrait s'accélérer dans les décennies à venir, pourrait modifier les vents en haute altitude et potentiellement avoir un impact sur le climat des moyennes latitudes. L'étendue de la banquise arctique varie considérablement d'une saison à l'autre, d'une année à l'autre, d'une décennie à l'autre. Améliorer notre capacité à prévoir ces variations nécessite de comprendre, observer et modéliser les interactions entre la banquise et les autres composantes du système Terre, telles que l'océan, l'atmosphère ou la biosphère, à différentes échelles de temps. La réalisation de prévisions saisonnières de la banquise arctique est très récente comparée aux prévisions du temps ou aux prévisions saisonnières de paramètres météorologiques (température, précipitation). Les résultats ayant émergé au cours des dix dernières années mettent en évidence l'importance des observations de l'épaisseur de la glace de mer pour prévoir l'évolution de la banquise estivale plusieurs mois à l'avance. Surface temperatures over the Arctic region have been increasing twice as fast as global mean temperatures, a phenomenon known as arctic amplification. One main contributor to this polar warming is the large decline of Arctic sea ice observed since the beginning of satellite observations, which has been attributed to the increase of greenhouse gases. The acceleration of Arctic sea ice loss that is projected for the coming decades could modify the upper level atmospheric circulation yielding climate impacts up to the mid-latitudes. There is considerable variability in the spatial extent of ice cover on seasonal, interannual and decadal time scales. Better understanding, observing and modelling the interactions between sea ice and the other components of the climate system is key for improved predictions of Arctic sea ice in the future. Running operational-like seasonal predictions of Arctic sea ice is a quite recent effort compared to weather predictions or seasonal predictions of atmospheric fields like temperature or precipitation. Recent results stress the importance of sea ice thickness observations to improve seasonal predictions of Arctic sea ice conditions during summer.

Recently, new types of leadership have emerged, a new generation of leaders designed and developed new types of organizations. The best practices became the evidence of poor knowledge about the leadership phenomenon. In the paper, the authors made an attempt to synthesize the interpretations of the man key terms in motivation theory and to find the missing link between motivation and leadership. The motivation as system of components is in the centre of current research, namely needs, drive, aspirations. The traditional division in extrinsic and intrinsic motivation is complicated by tangible and intangible motivation. Some studies highlighted the importance of intangible motivation, and therefore new findings in this sphere are in focus of current research. The authors presented an overview of the key terms and their interpretations by the main contributors in motivation theory. The study of Nanus and Bennis is the main seminal work that introduced the Wallenda factor as a term to the world of leaders and strategists. Four strategies for leadership were analysed in this paper with specific emphasis on the Wallenda factor as the link between motivation and leadership. The strategies include managing through vision, creating of meaning via communication, positioning, and deployment of self through positive self-regard and the Wallenda factor. The observations prove that optimistic expectations may become a powerful driver of changes and increment innovations in the organization. The Wallenda factor of a leader might be a significant factor in setting challenging goals and motivating employees to achieve them. In contrast, the fear of failure may stop the innovation and ruin the organization that depends on the business environment. It is recommended to include positive thinking (or Wallenda factor) into the list of intangible factors of motivation at an organization.

ABSTRACT Hepatitis C virus (HCV) clearance has been associated with reduced viral evolution in targeted cytotoxic T-lymphocyte (CTL) epitopes, suggesting that HCV clearers may mount CTL responses with a superior ability to recognize epitope variants and prevent viral immune escape. Here, 40 HCV-infected subjects were tested with 406 10-mer peptides covering the vast majority of the sequence diversity spanning a 197-residue region of the NS3 protein. HCV clearers mounted significantly broader CTL responses of higher functional avidity and with wider variant cross-recognition capacity than nonclearers. These observations have important implications for vaccine approaches that may need to induce high-avidity responses in vivo.

Rationale: Endothelial cells are thought to emerge de novo from the mesoderm to form the entire circulatory system. Recently, erythro-myeloid progenitors (EMPs) have been proposed to be another remarkable developmental origin for blood vessels in multiple organs, including the hindbrain, liver, lung, and heart, as demonstrated by lineage tracing studies using different genetic tools. These observations challenge the current consensus that intraembryonic vessels are thought to expand solely by the proliferation of preexisting endothelial cells. Resolution of this controversy over the developmental origin of endothelial cells is crucial for developing future therapeutics for vessel-dependent organ repair and regeneration. Objective: To examine the contribution of EMPs to intraembryonic endothelial cells. Methods and Results: We first used a transgenic mouse expressing a tamoxifen-inducible Mer-iCre fusion protein driven by the Csf1r (colony stimulating factor 1 receptor) promoter. Genetic lineage tracing based on Csf1r-Mer-iCre-Mer showed no contribution of EMPs to brain endothelial cells identified by several markers. We also generated a knock-in mouse line by inserting an internal ribosome entry site-iCre cassette into the 3′ untranslated region of Csf1r gene to further investigate the cellular fates of EMPs. Similarly, we did not find any Csf1r-ires-iCre traced endothelial cells in brain, liver, lung, or heart in development either. Additionally, we found that Kit (KIT proto-oncogene receptor tyrosine kinase) was expressed not only in EMPs but also in embryonic hindbrain endothelial cells. Therefore, Kit promoter–driven recombinase, such as Kit-CreER, is a flawed tool for lineage tracing when examining the contribution of EMPs to hindbrain endothelial cells. We also traced CD45 (protein tyrosine phosphatase receptor type C; Ptprc) + circulating EMPs and did not find any CD45 lineage-derived endothelial cells during development. Conclusions: Our study suggested that EMPs are not the origin of intraembryonic endothelial cells.

All seabirds in the northwest Atlantic Ocean migrate, but timing and routes are not well understood. We evaluate existing knowledge on seabird migration with data from the Programme intégré de recherches sur les oiseaux pélagiques (PIROP) data base, using observations of immature and moulting seabirds to track migration of the following species: Northern Fulmar (Fulmarus glacialis), Greater Shearwater (Puffinus gravis), Northern Gannet (Morus bassanus), Herring Gull (Larus argentatus), Iceland Gull (Larus glaucoides), Glaucous Gull (Larus hyperboreus), Great Black-backed Gull (Larus marinus), Black-legged Kittiwake (Rissa tridactyla), and Thick-billed Murre (Uria lomvia). The distributions of immature and moulting birds show strong seasonal patterns in the northwest Atlantic, and new transition zones and clear biological borderlines for seabird distribution were found. New data on timing and location of moulting Thick-billed Murres are presented. The southern Labrador Banks and Grand Banks (Thick-billed Murre, Northern Fulmar) and southeast Newfoundland and Georges Bank (Greater Shearwater) were identified as moulting grounds. In terms of marine conservation the following areas seem to be important for part of the life cycle of the species named: western Greenland, Cape Cod, Grand Banks, Labrador Banks, southwest Newfoundland, and the Grand Manan area.

Abstract: The waterbird populations of a man-made drinking water reservoir near Kingston, Jamaica, were monitored closely over a period of 28 months (156 surveys, 2014–2016). A total of 21 species were recorded: 2 breeding birds, 6 year-round residents and partial migrants, 6 winter migrants, 1 summer visitor, and 6 locally rare species. The waterbirds fluctuated in abundance and species composition, with time of day, season, and water level identified as influencing environmental factors. A comparison with published observations spanning four decades (1962–1999) allowed for the identification of long-term trends, including the apparent local loss of another 13 species from the reservoir in the meantime. Strain describes the deformation of a material as a result of applied stress. It has been widely employed to probe transport properties of materials, ranging from semiconductors to correlated materials. In order to understand, and eventually control, transport behavior under strain, it is important to quantify the effects of strain on the electronic bandstructure, carrier density, and mobility. Here, we demonstrate that much information can be obtained by exploring magnetoelastoresistance (MER), which refers to magnetic field-driven changes of the elastoresistance. We use this powerful approach to study the combined effect of strain and magnetic fields on the semimetallic transition metal dichalcogenideWTe2. We discover that WTe2shows a large and temperature-nonmonotonic elastoresistance, driven by uniaxial stress, that can be tuned by magnetic field. Using first-principle and analytical low-energy model calculations, we provide a semiquantitative understanding of our experimental observations. We show that inWTe2, the strain-induced change of the carrier density dominates the observed elastoresistance. In addition, the change of the mobilities can be directly accessed by using MER. Our analysis also reveals the importance of a heavy-hole band near the Fermi level on the elastoresistance at intermediate temperatures. Systematic understanding of strain effects in single crystals of correlated materials is important for future applications, such as strain tuning of bulk phases and fabrication of devices controlled by strain.
