The cultivation of non-edible oil-bearing plants as feedstocks for the biodiesel production can aggressively take advantage of natural environments. Herbaceous non-edible oil-bearing plants have been significantly favored as an ideal feedstock for biodiesel fuel, though little is known about its industrial feasibility and environmental impact. The items with the greatest sensitivity in capital and ecology are land acquisition, plant life cycle, mechanical harvesting, fertilizer, control of weed, pests and diseases, seed yield and oil content. This study aims at analyzing the disadvantages of herbaceous non-edible oil-bearing plants and suggests impeding their industrial cultivation for the biodiesel production. The source of information for the proper selection of non-edible oil-bearing plants suitable as biodiesel feed-stocks has been the recent relevant literature. Herbaceous non-edible oil-bearing plants have a low phytoremediation potential and oil yield, but high weed potential. They occupy a large arable area while demand harder cultivation conditions and mechanical harvesting. Non-edible oils from woody plants are promising biodiesel feedstock. However, the weed potential of woody oil-bearing plants must also be considered to prevent their invasiveness.

The assortment of butter in Russia traditionally contained anhydrous butter produced by the method of knocking cream. At present, butter is produced to a greater extent by the conversion of high-fat cream. On the shelves of stores, besides the sweetening and acidic oils, you can see butter butter with the addition of additional flavor components. Fito components have high antioxidant properties and are widely used in the food industry. Introduction to the product of this recipe ingredient allows you to enrich the product with valuable nutrients and increase the stability of the latter when stored. The recipe of oil of the acidic and phytocomponents containing high-fat cream, leaven, salt, cooked phytocomponents, vitamins, stabilizer, emulsifier is proposed. The phytocomponent composition includes a dry mixture of parsley, dill and porridge. It is of interest to study the antioxidant activity of phyto-components. The dried parts of the plants were shredded to a particle size of 2.5 ± 1.5 mm. Plant extracts were obtained by maceration using distilled water. The extracts were filtered before the study. An indicator of the antioxidant activity of the aqueous extract of phyto-components was determined – 0.271 mg / g. A comparison of the obtained results with known indices of other plants is carried out. As the objects of comparison took the most used herbs in the food industry: sweet, saffron, thyme, St. John's wort, chamomile chemist, melissa. It has been established that the mixture of dill, parsley and porridge meal has a high antioxidant index and minimal restrictions when used. The optimal dosage of the mixture of herbs is 1.0 – 1.5 % and food cooking salt – 1 % (indicator according to GOST 32899–2014 for greenery and their mixtures is 0.5 – 8.0 %, for sodium chloride – no more than 2 %) The technology of production of oxygen-containing oil with phytocomponents is developed. The indicators of its quality have been studied, the shelf life of the oil has been determined.

<p> </p><p>The paper relates to study of biological activity of 40% ethanol extracts of <em>Dracocephalum moldavica,</em> <em>Hyssopus officinalis</em>, <em>Satureja hortensis</em>, <em>Lophanthus anisatus</em> and <em>Monarda diduma</em>, grown in Ukrainian Polissya, against a pathogenic agent <em>Escherichia coli</em> UCM – B (ATCC 25922).</p><p>The research proves that ethanol extracts of <em>H. officinalis</em>, <em>D. moldavica, S. hortensis, L. anisatus</em> exert antimicrobial activity as the extracted substances provided a twofold increase in minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) values against <em>E. coli. </em>Likewise, a twofold increase was observed in minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of <em>L. anisatus</em> ethanol extracts. As to <em>M. diduma </em>ethanol extracts, their inhibitory and bactericidal influence on <em>E. coli</em> was not registered.</p><p>Oil-bearing plants (family <em>Lamiaceae), </em>grown in Zhytomyr Polissya, are characterized by antimicrobial properties, attributed to biologically active substances that are formed and accumulated in the plant material. The main components of hyssop essential oil are isopinocamphone (44.43%), pinocamphone (35.49%), myrtenol (5.26 %), germacrene D (3.15 %), pulegone (2.93 %), bicyclogermacrene (1.35 %). In mint anise essential oil prevailed pulegone (59.19%), izomenton (14.34%), bicyclogermacrene (3,21 %), <em>β</em>-kariofilen (2,99 %), menton (2.21 %), 1,6-germacradien-5-ol (1.5 %), isopulegone (1.4 %), in summer savory – carvacrol (89.07%), g-terpinene (3.53%), <em>α</em>-thujone (1.7 %), camphor (1.48 %). The dominant components of moldavian dragonhead essential oil were geranial (26.19%) and neral (22.36%), 2-(1-hydroxy-1-isopropyl)-cyklopentanon (8.29 % ), 2,3-dehydro-1,8-cineole (6.87 %), 3-(1-hydroxy-1-isopropyl) cyklopentanon (6,51 %), nerol (4.74 %), 3-methyl-2-cyclohexane 1-on (2.13 %).<em></em></p><p>The paper draws attention to further more detailed study of ethanol extracts of hyssop, moldavian dragonhead, summer savory, mint anise with the aim of producing antibacterial herbal preparations.</p>

Oil-bearing plants are important sources of edible oil and proteins; they have attracted attention recently because of their antioxidant, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. The objective of this work was to investigate the nature of phenolic compounds in oil-bearing plants and the effects of phenolic compounds on protein isolates from soybean and flaxseed. Proteins were isolated from full-fat and defatted soybean and flaxseed using sodium hydroxide extraction and isoelectric precipitation. Free phenolic compounds were extracted from the oil-bearing plants and protein isolates using methanol; for bound phenolic compounds the oil-bearing plants and proteins were subjected to basic and acidic hydrolysis followed by methanol extraction. Total free and bound phenolic compounds were determined by spectrophotometric analysis. Reversed phase-HPLC was used for separation of individual phenolic compounds, which were identified by mass spectrometry (MS). Molecular characteristics and biological properties of the protein isolates were studied using RP-HPLC, polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) and MS. Thermal and gelation properties of protein isolates were investigated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and rheometry. Generally, bound phenolic compounds (20%-30% of total phenolic content) were higher in protein isolates from flaxseed than in protein isolates from soybean (10%-20% of total phenolic content). With flaxseed protein isolates, removal of phenolic compounds showed little effect on the electropherotic behavior of the proteins or the protein subunits. Native-PAGE. SDS-PAGE and RP-HPLC for the peptides profiles of hydrolyzed protein isolates from both full-fat and defatted soybean revealed the removal of free and bound phenolic compounds affect on the biological properties of protein isolates. Removal of free and bound phenolic compounds affected the thermal stability and gelation properties of protein isolates from flaxseed and soybean.

Дисертація присвячена розробленню технології отримання поверхнево-активних речовин штаму Pseudomonas sp. PS-17 та технологій їх застосування для вирощування олійних рослин. Встановлено ефективність використання економічно вигідних субстратів (фузу олійного, пересмаженої олії), композицій їх з гліцерином, а також дробного способу їх подачі для синтезу рамноліпідних ПАР: вихід підвищено на 18-39% порівняно з гліцерином. Удосконалено способи виділення ПАР, одержано економічно вигідні продукти. Методом лінійних багатопараметрових рівнянь визначено оптимальні екстрагенти рамноліпідів. Показано, що отримані ПАР мають високу поверхневу (28,3 мН/м), емульгувальну (індекс Е24 60-80%), змочувальну активність, впливають на проникність клітинних мембран мікроорганізмів, рослин, підсилюють дію біоцидів, фітогормонів. Встановлено стимулювальний вплив ПАР на ріст олійних рослин, їх фізіолого-біохімічны показники. Ефективність отриманих ПАР у вирощуванні соняшника доведено у дрібноділянкових і виробничому дослідах: за їх використання значно підвищувалися ростові показники та якість врожаю. Розроблено технологічну та апаратурно-технологічну схему виробництва ПАР штаму Pseudomonas sp. PS-17, яка дозволяє одержати 5 форм цільових продуктів для практичного застосування у рослинництві.
The dissertation thesis is devoted to the development of the biotechnology of microbial synthesis of the surface-active substances by the strain Pseudomonas sp. PS-17 and their application in cultivation of oil-bearing plants. The effectiveness of the application of cost-beneficial substrates (used frying oil and waste from production of sunflower oil – phosphatide concentrate) was established for the synthesis of rhamnolipid surfactants by the strain Pseudomonas sp. PS-17 when applied alone and in combination with glycerol. It was shown that the use of combined substrates contributed to the increased yields of rhamnolipids if compared to the media with monosubstrates. When using a mixture of glycerol and used frying oil or phosphatide concentrate as carbon sources the final concentration of rhamnolipids can be increased on 18-39 %. The developed approaches of the synthesis of rhamnolipid surfactants will enable the decrease of the overall cost of biosurfactant production if compared with the cost of the production on glycerol alone. The processes of rhamnolipid surfactant separation were optimized: enzymatic hydrolysis (using protease C enzyme) of post-fermentative culture liquid, precipitation of rhamnolipid biocomplex (RBC) from culture liquid supernatant (CLS) by adjusting temperature regime. Economically viable forms of targeted products based on exo- and endomethabolites of Pseudomonas sp. PS-17 and methods of their isolation were proposed. Optimum solvents for the extraction of rhamnolipids from CLS were determined using the method of linear multiparameter equations. Physico-chemical and biological properties of the products based on surfactants of Pseudomonas sp. PS-17 were established: surface activity, emulsification of hydrophobic substances, wetting of surfaces, the influence on the permeability of cell membranes of microorganisms and plants, the activity of surfactants on the major groups of phytohormones (auxins, cytokinins, gibereline acid). The antimicrobial activity of surfactants against phytopathogen microorganisms was shown, and highly effective formulations of rhamnolipid surfactant with ethylthiosulfonate-biocide were designed. A stimulating action of the synthesized rhamnolipid surfactants on the growth of oil-bearing plants was established. It was shown that the effect of the biosurfactants on microorganisms and plants via the changes in their physiological and biochemical characteristics (growth rate, cell membrane permeability, activity of enzymes and phytohormones). The possibility of application of the obtained biosurfactants in agriculture as plant growth regulators was established. The effectiveness of the developed biosurfactants in growing sunflower was confirmed by a small plot experiments, as well as in the field experiment. It was shown that rhamnolipid surfactants promote growth and quality of the crops (the mass of 1000 seeds, flower diameter, fat and protein content in the seeds). The process flow and equipment diagrams of industrial production of rhamnolipid surfactants of Pseudomonas sp. PS-17 using a vortex bioreactor were developed, 5 forms of rhamnolipid products for practical use in cropping were obtained.

Установлена эффективность использования экономически выгодных субстратов (фуза масляного, пережаренного масла), их смесей с глицерином, дробного способа их подачи для синтеза рамнолипидных ПАВ, выход увеличен на 18-39% относительно глицерина как моносубстрата. Усовершенствованы способы выделения рамнолипидных ПАВ, получены экономически выгодные продукты. Методом линейных многопараметровых уравнений найдены оптимальные экстрагенты рамнолипидов из СКЖ. Разработанные ПАВ имеют высокую поверхностную (28,3 мН/м), эмульгирующую (индекс Е24 60-80%), смачивающую активность, влияют на проницаемость клеточных мембран микроорганизмов, растений, усиливают действие биоцидов, фитогормонов. Показано стимулирующее действие полученных ПАВ на рост масличных растений, их физиолого-биохимических показателей. Эффективность рамнолипидных ПАВ при выращивании подсолнечника установлена в мелкоучастковых, производственных опытах: значительно увеличены ростовые показатели, а также качество урожая. Разработана технологическая и аппаратурно-технологическая схемы промышленного производства рамнолипидных ПАВ Pseudomonas sp. PS-17 для получения 5 форм продуктов для практического применения в растениеводстве.

When we drive by a modern farm, we still expect to see green plants sprouting from the earth, bearing the promise of food or cooking oil or a cotton shirt. Pulling up one of those plants, we are still prepared to find dirt clinging to its roots. Even in this age of high-tech euphoria, agriculture remains essentially a matter of plants growing in the soil. But another element besides soil has always been a part of the farmer’s life-water. Farming is not only growing crops on a piece of land, it is also growing crops in water. I don’t mean a hydroponics lab. I mean that the farmer and his plants inescapably are participants in the natural cycle of water on this planet. Water is a more volatile, uncertain element than soil in the agricultural equation. Soil naturally stays there on the farm, unless poor management intervenes, whereas water is by nature forever on the move, falling from the clouds, soaking down to roots, running off in streams to the sea. We must farm rivers and the flow of water as well as fields and pastures if we are to continue to thrive. But it has never been easy to extract a living from something so mobile and elusive, so relentless and yet so vulnerable as water. If there is to be a long-term, sustainable agriculture in the United States or elsewhere, farmers must think and act in accord with the flow of water over, under, through, and beyond their farms. Preserving the fertility of the soil resource is critical to sustaining it, of course, but not more so than maintaining the quality of water. In many ways, the two ideals are one. And their failure is one, as when rain erodes the topsoil and creeks and rivers suffer. But there are differences between those two resources, differences we must understand and respect. Unlike soil, water cannot be “built.” It can be lost to the farmer, or it can be diverted, polluted, misused, or over-appropriated, but it can never be deepened or enhanced as soil can be.

As per the hadith narrated by Ibn Abbas (RA), Prophet Muhammed specifically mentioned about Sulayman (AS) recorded the name and use of many herbal medicinal remedies after construction of his castle (Ibn Asakri’s Mukhtasar Tareekh Dimashq 3.393), in addition to it, Prophet Muhammed use to recommend 65 different herbal prophylactic medicines which are scientifically proved to be highly effective against almost all types of ailments, among this repository of 65, while prescribing the NS Prophet Muhammed narrated “use this black seeds regularly it is having the properties to cure all disease (ailment) except death (An authentic hadith narrated by Abu Hurayrah (RA) and recorded by Bukhari, Muslim Ahmad Ibn Majah). This in-depth review specially articulated to elaborate phytochemical, pharmacological and mechanistic approach to bring out the properties of not only NS but in addition, it focusing on the important properties of EJ. Preliminarily to say NS claim to have anti-inflammatory, analgesic, hepato-protective, neuro-protective, gastro-protective and other useful activity are due to two important constituents Thymoquinone (TQ) and NS oil (NSO). TQ has interaction with human serum albumin. Seeds containing volatile oils mainly Melanthin showed toxicity at larger doses. Whereas, EJ simultaneously proved its effectiveness underutilized fruit, crops are nutritious bearing wide range of pharmaceuticals properties. EJ fruit is highly perishable and is mainly used for the diabetes patients, it is well known as a traditional medicinal plant having essential bioactive compounds which are present in all parts of the plant. The major bioactive compounds present in the EJ roots are phytosterols, flavonoids, carotenoids, myricetin, oxalic acid, gallic acid, citronellol, cyanidin diglucoside, hotrienol, and polyphenols as well as micronutrients having many health benefits. It is also a good source of anthocyanin and effective against numerous health problems and act as chemo-preventive, radioprotective and demonstrating antineoplastic properties. The ripe fruits are pleasant, astringent taste and are eaten either raw or processed into different products mainly vinegar, jam, jellies and squash. The jambolana seed contains alkaloid, jambosine, and glycoside jambolin or antimellin. To be concluded, NS and EJ both bearing similar therapeutic and pharmacological endorsement with different remarkable biological active molecule, which will become future reference to find out the natural way to cure untreatable disease and its disorder such as HIV-Aids, Cancer and recent outbreak, etc. according to narration made by Prophet Muhammed .

The demand for improving the steam turbine economic efficiency is being expected for both GTCC and conventional power plants. MHPS suggests HP/IP/LP separate casing and one bearing/rotor (one bearing between two casings) type steam turbine to enhance the turbine efficiency and reduce the cost of construction. Separate casing is preferable for blade aerodynamic performance, and one bearing/rotor is effective to reduce turbine bearing mechanical losses and turbine length. From the view point to design this type of rotor shaft arrangement, the most important point is to apply bearing technologies to permit the higher specific load and lower mechanical loss as well as for better dynamic oil film characteristics. The new two pads tilting journal bearing has been developed, utilizing MHPS’s experience on traditional two pads bearing with direct lubrication. The bearing structure and design parameters are optimized and good static and dynamic performance are obtained. Further, as practical countermeasures for a sub-synchronous vibration, the oil supply nozzle efficiency is improved, while properly adjusting supply oil flow distribution. The 610 mm size bearing test was conducted in-house test facility. The limit of specific load was verified, the bearing loss has become less than target.

Modernization of steam turbine components can extend the life of a power plant, decrease maintenance costs, increase service intervals and improve operational flexibility. However, this can also lead to challenging demands for existing components such as bearings, e.g., due to increased rotor weights. Therefore, a careful design and evaluation process of bearings is of major importance. This paper describes the advanced modeling methods applied for the optimization of a novel 900 mm three-pad tilting pad journal bearing followed by validation results that showed a high bearing temperature sensitivity to the fresh oil supply temperature during operation. The bearing was especially developed to cope with increased rotor weights within the framework of low pressure steam turbine modernizations at two similar 1000 MW nuclear power plants. With a static bearing load of approximately 2.7 MN at a rotor speed of 1500 rpm, it represents one of the highest loaded applications for tilting pad journal bearings in turbomachinery worldwide. After identification of the reasons for the sensitivity, advanced modeling methods were applied to optimize the bearing. For this purpose, a more comprehensive bearing model was developed taking into account the direct lubrication at the leading edge of the pads and the thermo-mechanical pad deformation. For the latter, a co-simulation between the bearing computation code and structural mechanics software was performed. The results of the entire analyses indicated modifications of bearing and pad clearance, pad pivot position, circumferential and axial pad length as well as pad thickness. Furthermore, the oil distribution into the pads was optimized by modifying the orifices within the bearing. The optimized bearing was then implemented on both units and proved its excellent operational behavior at increased fresh oil supply temperatures of up to 55°C. In addition, inspections during scheduled outages after 18 months of operation and subsequent restarts with reproducible bearing behavior confirmed the robustness of the optimized bearing. In conclusion, the application of advanced modeling methods proved to be the key success factor in the optimization of this bearing, which represents an optimal solution for large steam turbine and generator rotor train applications.

Bearing lubrication systems in closed-loop plants using gas (air or helium) as the working fluid (e.g., gas turbine, gas-cooled nuclear reactor, gas compressor, etc.) are very demanding since liquid lubricant ingress could contaminate the circuit, unlike open-cycle systems where the products would be expelled in the exhaust. Oil-lubricated bearings, the tribology mainstay in the power plant field, are reliable, but in the event of a failure in the seal or buffer system, the impact of oil ingress (e.g., saturation of insulation, coking on high-temperature surfaces, or in the extreme case, conflagration of equipment) can be costly and result in extended plant downtime. The emergence in the early 1980s of a new tribology technology, namely a system in which the turbomachine rotor is levitated by a magnetic field, and positively sensed and controlled in real-time by an electronic system, now offers the designer an additional option. While an active magnetic system has many advantages, its foremost are (1) potential for very high reliability, (2) obviates the possibility of closed circuit contamination by lubricant ingress, (3) system simplicity, (4) ease of operation, and (5) ease of critical speed problems. It is projected that utilization of “electronic chips instead of liquid films” will have a significant impact on the design of high-speed rotating machinery across the full spectrum of applications. This paper outlines the emergence of active magnetic bearings in rotating machinery for closed-cycle gas turbines, and in helium circulators for future high-temperature gas-cooled nuclear power plants. The paper highlights the existing industrial technology base that will make possible the deployment of active magnetic bearings in rotating machinery for the next generation of power plants that utilize closed-loop circuits.

U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has recently sponsored research programs to develop Megawatt scale supercritical CO2 (sCO2) turbine for use in concentrated solar power (CSP) and fossil based applications. From rotordynamics perspective, the extremely high power densities associated with this sCO2 turbine (similar to those of rocket turbo pump) and the long shaft of the turbine require mid-span support from bearings to achieve the high rotational speeds needed to achieve desired turbine efficiency targets. The mid-span bearings, if oil lubricated, need two sets of seals to isolate the working fluid from lubricating oil and represent a combined parasitic load of as much as 5% of the power plant output. These parasitic loads can be avoided by the use of hybrid gas bearing (HGB) which uses turbine working fluid itself as the lubricant for generating hydrostatic + hydrodynamic pressure and hence can operate in a high temperature, high pressure sCO2 environment. A successful and reliable implementation of HGB is expected to provide significant efficiency improvement in the sCO2 turbine for modular plants in 10MW scale. However, the behavior of hybrid gas bearing with supercritical CO2 as the working fluid has never been studied before. Hence a careful investigation of its hydrodynamic and rotordynamic characteristics with perturbations associated with sCO2 fluid and sCO2 turbine is warranted. In this paper the use of HGB to bring the critical speed ratio of highly power dense 10 MW sCO2 turbine into a manageable regime is investigated. Further, the performance characteristics of HGB in high pressure, high temperature sCO2 are investigated with a coupled fluid-structure interaction model. Differences between load capacity and stiffness characteristics for traditional operation in air versus operation in highly dense and viscous sCO2 are highlighted. Using Bayesian probabilistic models, insights into key design parameters needed to optimize HGB performance are obtained. A 3D fracture mechanics and crack propagation model is also developed to predict life of HGB under typical sCO2 turbine mission cycle for CSP application.

Oil coolers are widely-used in nuclear power plants which cool oil flowed through the bearing of steam turbines to a suitable temperature in order for the safe operation of steam turbines. Owing to the high viscosity, the flow state of oil is generally laminar flow or transition flow, which easily leads to poor heat transfer capability and thus a large volume of the oil coolers. The insertion of twisted tapes in circular tube is a passive method widely-used for enhancing heat transfer of laminar or transition flow. However, little research focuses on the heat transfer of highly-viscous fluids inside tube using the twisted tapes. The article will present the numerical simulations of the swirling flow induced by a new coaxial cross twisted tape inserts in a heat transfer tube with lubricating oil. The effects of the clearance ratios and twist ratios on oil side heat transfer coefficient, friction factor and performance evaluation criterion will be numerically investigated using CFD computer software STAR-CCM+. The clearance ratios are 0.077, 0.154 and 0.231. The twist ratios are 2.0 and 4.0. The boundary condition of simulation is constant wall temperature for the Reynolds number ranging from 200 to 1300. The results indicate that the new coaxial cross twisted tapes are efficacious in enhancing the heat transfer of the lubricating oil inside tube. When the clear ratio is 0.077, the effect of heat transfer enhancement of the coaxial cross twisted tapes is better than that of traditional twisted tapes. Furthermore, the highest performance evaluation criterion is up to 2.3.

The propulsion plant of a vessel generally consists of a propeller, a main engine and a shaft transferring the power. The shaft is supported by a set of bearings. One bearing in particular, the one directly forward of the propeller, is of special interest in this study. The correct functioning of this bearing is vital for the propulsion plant to remain operating. As a result of the different operating conditions of the propulsion plant particularly this bearing is subjected to varying loads. It also has to accommodate a certain slope mismatch with respect to the shaft. If a bearing functions correctly or not depends on the presence of an oil film between the bearing and the shaft. Also the thickness of the film and the generated pressures within it are deciding whether the loading is acceptable or not. As such a detailed analysis of the oil film between the shaft and the bearing presents a scientifically supported method to evaluate the acceptability of the loading of the bearing. Another advantage is that the method makes it possible to verify the correct functioning of the bearing in varying loads related to off design conditions. This study presents a general method to calculate the minimum oil thickness within a cylindrical bearing given such external parameters as load, slope mismatch, shaft speed and the oil viscosity. First a part of the bearing theory is presented as well as the relations governing the oil flow through the bearing. The method to solve the set of equations used is the finite difference method. Some adaptations of the formulae to enable the use of the method are presented. Also is explained what assumptions and boundary conditions are applied. In succession to the theoretical part the method is validated with a comparison to a set of experimental data. The practical significance of the use of the method is demonstrated by a practical case. Finally some conclusions are presented.

Tilting pad thrust bearings are designed to transfer high axial loads from rotating shafts to the static support structure. In the present paper, formulation of Reynolds’ equation for the bearing is done in two dimensions (planar). A finite difference method is used to convert the terms of the Reynolds’ equation in to a set of simultaneous linear algebraic equations. A solution procedure for finding value of the pressure in the oil film is described. Numerical integration of the pressure values gives the load distribution. Subsequently, the study of angular stiffness of the film is done by varying the value of the oil film thickness and calculating torques at three different film shapes 1, 2 & 3 of the pad. The angular stiffness, differential displacement and load pertaining to the 3-2 pair are calculated for 0.5%–20% variation of ho. The results obtained show that the values of Kt* and K* converge asymptotically.

High loads and bearing life requirements make journal bearings a potential choice for use in high power, epicyclic gearboxes in jet engines. Particularly in a planetary configuration the kinematic conditions are complex. With the planet gears rotating about their own axis and orbiting around the sun gear, centrifugal forces generated by both motions interact with each other and affect the external flow behavior of the oil exiting the journal bearing. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations using the Volume of Fluid (VoF) method are carried out in ANSYS Fluent [1] to numerically model the two-phase flow behavior of the oil exiting the bearing and merging into the air surrounding the bearing. This paper presents an investigation of two numerical schemes that are available in ANSYS Fluent to track or capture the air-oil phase interface: the geometric reconstruction scheme and the compressive scheme. Both numerical schemes are used to model the oil outflow behavior in the most simplistic approximation of a journal bearing: a representation, rotating about its own axis, with a circumferentially constant, i.e. concentric, lubricating gap. Based on these simplifications, a three dimensional (3D) CFD sector model with rotationally periodic boundaries is considered. A comparison of the geometric reconstruction scheme and the compressive scheme is presented with regards to the accuracy of the phase interface reconstruction and the time required to reach steady state flow field conditions. The CFD predictions are validated against existing literature data with respect to the flow regime, the direction of the predicted oil flow path and the oil film thickness. Based on the findings and considerations of industrial requirements, a recommendation is made for the most suitable scheme to be used. With a robust and partially validated CFD model in place, the model fidelity can be enhanced to include journal bearing eccentricity. Due to the convergent-divergent gap and the resultant pressure field within the lubricating oil film, the outflow behavior can be expected to be very different compared to that of a concentric journal bearing. Naturally, the inlet boundary conditions for the oil emerging from the journal bearing into the external environment must be consistent with the outlet conditions from the bearing. The second part of this paper therefore focuses on providing a method to generate appropriate inlet boundary conditions for external oil flow from an eccentric journal bearing.

A fleet of reactor coolant pump thrust bearings were experiencing loss of oil inventory through a face rubbing mechanical oil seal. In a span of six months, Westinghouse developed a replacement seal which retrofit into the existing bearing, erected a full scale bearing test system, operated the prototype seal through various operating conditions utilizing Six Sigma Design of Experiments methodology, qualified the seal for sustained use in an operating reactor plant and supported the installation of the retrofit seals. The retrofit seal replaced a problematic face rubbing seal with a controlled leakage design utilizing a floating ring — a pressure reducing bushing free to translate in the X-Y plane. The prototype seal system was optimized through use of the Design of Experiments. Design optimization was aimed at reducing oil aeration to levels lower than those present with the original equipment, which when achieved, provided improved heat transfer from the bearing. The test system was constructed around a production thrust bearing, identical to those installed in the plant, which was modified to facilitate collection of a variety of process variables. In all, the system was capable of simultaneously sampling and storing data from 56 separate channels; while recording digital video from eight sources, from cameras both inside and outside of the bearing. All in-service operating parameters were duplicated by the test system, including: computer controlled variable vertical thrust load from zero to 90 tons, computer controlled variable radial thrust load and acceleration from standstill to operating speed in 16 seconds. Safe shutdown operating variables were monitored automatically by the system, in the event of a faulted condition the system automatically detected the fault and initiated a safe shutdown automatically. To date, all installed seal systems have performed as designed; allowing essentially no leakage at this location from the bearing reservoir. The test system continues to be used on development projects focused on improving other aspects of the bearing’s performance.

Badak LNG Plant Bontang have succeeded in mixing different brands of turbomachinery lube oil ISO VG32 which intended to increase flexibility of lube oil usage and eliminate to one brand dependency during operational. The methodology referred to ASTM D7155 Standard Practice for Evaluating Compatibility of Mixtures of Turbine Lubricating Oils and ASTM D4378 Standard Practice for In-Service Monitoring of Mineral Turbine Oils for Steam, Gas and Combined Cycle Turbines. The study was started from lube oil compatibility test at laboratory. After that, a ratio 70:30 of ISO VG32 existing lube oil (DTE Light) and new lube oil (Turbolube XT32) were mixed and trialed to Fuel Gas Compressor and its Turbine Driver. Lube oil and equipment operating parameter such as viscosity, color, water content, total acid number, foaming tendency, oxidation, metal content, flash point, bearing temperature, filter differential pressure, and vibration were collected and compared to baseline data to analyze deterioration indication of lube oil. As long as eight month trial test, there was no deterioration indication of lube oil mixture and no significant influence to the equipment operating performance. Badak LNG have decided to continue lube oil mixing.

Date palm (Phoenix dactylifera L.) is the major fruit tree grown in arid areas in the Middle East and North Africa. In the last century, dates were introduced to new regions including the USA. Date palms are traditionally propagated through offshoots. Expansion of modern date palm groves led to the development of Tissue Culture propagation methods that generate a large number of homogenous plants, have no seasonal effect on plant source and provide tools to fight the expansion of date pests and diseases. The disadvantage of this procedure is the occurrence of off-type trees which differ from the original cultivar. In the present project we focused on two of the most common date palm off-types: (1) trees with reduced fruit setting, in which most of the flowers turn into three-carpel parthenocarpic fruits. In a severe form, multi-carpel flowers and fruitlets (with up to six or eight carpels instead of the normal three-carpel flowers) are also formed. (2) dwarf trees, having fewer and shorter leaves, very short trunk and are not bearing fruits at their expected age, compared to the normal trees. Similar off-types occur in other crop species propagated by tissue culture, like banana (mainly dwarf plants) or oil palm (with a common 'Mantled' phenotype with reduced fruit setting and occurrence of supernumerary carpels). Some off-types can only be detected several years after planting in the fields. Therefore, efficient methods for prevention of the generation of off-types, as well as methods for their detection and early removal, are required for date palms, as well as for other tissue culture propagated crops. This research is aimed at the understanding of the mechanisms by which off-types are generated, and developing markers for their early identification. Several molecular and genomic approaches were applied. Using Methylation Sensitive AFLP and bisulfite sequencing, we detected changes in DNA methylation patterns occurring in off-types. We isolated and compared the sequence and expression of candidate genes, genes related to vegetative growth and dwarfism and genes related to flower development. While no sequence variation were detected, changes in gene expression, associated with the severity of the "fruit set" phenotype were detected in two genes - PdDEF (Ortholog of rice SPW1, and AP3 B type MADS box gene), and PdDIF (a defensin gene, highly homologous to the oil palm gene EGAD). We applied transcriptomic analyses, using high throughput sequencing, to identify genes differentially expressed in the "palm heart" (the apical meristem and the region of embryonic leaves) of dwarf vs. normal trees. Among the differentially expressed genes we identified genes related to hormonal biosynthesis, perception and regulation, genes related to cell expansion, and genes related to DNA methylation. Using Representation Difference Analyses, we detected changes in the genomes of off-type trees, mainly chloroplast-derived sequences that were incorporated in the nuclear genome and sequences of transposable elements. Sequences previously identified as differing between normal and off-type trees of oil palms or banana, successfully identified variation among date palm off-types, suggesting that these represent highly labile regions of monocot genomes. The data indicate that the date palm genome, similarly to genomes of other monocot crops as oil palm and banana, is quite unstable when cells pass through a cycle of tissue culture and regeneration. Changes in DNA sequences, translocation of DNA fragments and alteration of methylation patterns occur. Consequently, patterns of gene expression are changed, resulting in abnormal phenotypes. The data can be useful for future development of tools for early identification of off-type as well as for better understanding the phenomenon of somaclonal variation during propagation in vitro.
