Abstract An on-chip fracture mechanics method is extended to characterize subcritical crack growth in submicron freestanding films. The method relies on a self-actuated concept based on MEMS fabrication principles. The configuration consists of a notched specimen attached to actuator beams involving high internal stress. Upon release, a crack initiates at the notch, propagates, and arrests. Several improvements are worked out to limit the mode III component and to avoid crack kinking. The method is applied to subcritical crack growth in 140-nm-thick SiO2 films under different humidity conditions. The data reduction scheme relates crack growth rate to stress intensity factor. The static fracture toughness value is ~ 0.73 MPa $$\sqrt{\mathrm{m}}$$ m , with standard error of 0.01 MPa $$\sqrt{\mathrm{m}}$$ m and standard deviation of 0.17 MPa $$\sqrt{\mathrm{m}}.$$ m . Subcritical crack growth rates are much smaller than in bulk specimens. A major advantage is that many test samples can be simultaneously monitored while avoiding any external equipment. A three degree-of-freedom (3DOF) pseudo-rigid-body model (PRBM) has been developed and used in the design of a new class of self-retracting fully compliant bistable micromechanism (SRFBM). The SRFBM provides small-displacement linear travel bistability and is suitable for low-power microswitching applications. The design process involved a combination of single and multiple degree-of-freedom PRBM and finite element models to quickly proceed from a concept rigid-body mechanism to fully compliant fabrication-ready geometry. The 3DOF model presented here was developed to more accurately model the behavior of the tensural pivots—a new class of compliant segment used to avoid combined compressive loading of flexible segments. Four SRFBM designs were fabricated and tested for bistability, on-chip actuation, critical force, and fatigue tests. These tests validate the models used in the design process and demonstrate the functionality and reliability of the SRFBM.

Abstract More than ever before, data centers must deploy robust thermal solutions to adequately host the high-density and high-performance computing that is in high demand. The newer generation of central processing units (CPUs) and graphics processing units (GPUs) has substantially higher thermal power densities than previous generations. In recent years, more data centers rely on liquid cooling for the high-heat processors inside the servers and air cooling for the remaining low-heat Information Technology Equipment (ITE). This hybrid cooling approach creates a smaller and more efficient data center. The deployment of direct-to-chip cold plate liquid cooling is one of mainstream approaches to providing concentrated cooling to targeted processors. In the current study, a processor level experimental setup was developed to evaluate the cooling performance of a novel Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machined nickel-plated impinging cold plate on a 1 in x 1 in mock heater that represents a functional processing unit. The pressure drop and thermal resistance performance curves of the electroless nickel-plated cold plate are compared to those of a pure copper cold plate. A temperature uniformity analysis is done using CFD and compared to the actual test data. Lastly, the CNC machined pure copper one is compared to other reported cold plates to demonstrate its superiority of the design with respect to the cooling performance.

Abstract The authors report on the design, configure, and test of isotropic accelerometer strapdowns for high-precision inertial measurement unit (IMU) and folded MEMS configuration. The biaxial low-g MEMS accelerometers are based on the Platonic solids. A Platonic strapdown is integrated into an embedded system for acceleration-array signal acquisition targeting rigid-body pose-and-twist estimation. The electromechanical properties for dynamic sensitivity are tested on a haptic manipulator, which shows that the position estimation matches reasonably well the encoder readouts. The Platonic strapdown is promising in folded MEMS IMU with chip-level miniaturization and high estimation precision.

Abstract In this study a measurement technique for determination of equivalence ratio fluctuations from flame chemiluminescence in a kerosene-fuelled lean premixed combustor under atmospheric conditions is presented. Firstly, fundamental investigations into the relationship between the ratio of different chemiluminescence signals and the equivalence ratio are carried out using an imaging spectrometer. The chemiluminescence intensity is recorded for a wide range of equivalence ratios and fuel mass flows during steady state operation. The spectra show that the CH*/OH* ratio depends linearly on the equivalence ratio and is independent of the mass flow in the investigated range. Moreover, the background radiation has no influence on the monotonous trend of the CH*/OH* ratio for kerosene combustion. This interesting finding opens up new possibilities for passive optical measurement of the equivalence ratio in kerosene flames. Bandpass-filtered phase-correlated images of OH* and CH* chemiluminescence of an acoustically excited flame are taken simultaneously on one camera chip using an image doubler. After distortion correction, the image pair is used to calculate the global equivalence ratio from the CH*/OH* ratio. Based on the calibration chart derived in stationary operation, phase-resolved equivalence ratio perturbations are determined during acoustic excitation. The presented technique allows a quantitative measurement of equivalence ratio fluctuations in spray combustion and can therefore provide a better understanding of the fundamental mechanisms of thermoacoustic instabilities triggered by equivalence ratio fluctuations. AbstractWe investigate the effect of highly contrasting non-Newtonian liquid properties on the formation of liquid jets with a focused shape. By using two nozzle-free ejection techniques, mechanically impact- and laser-induced, fast jets of a highly elastic (sodium polyacrylate) and weakly elastic (xanthan-gum) diluted polymer solutions are generated. A unique high-speed effect is encountered at the jet ejection onset of the highly elastic solution. Its jet-tip speed is on average 1.4 times faster in comparison to a Newtonian (glycerin/water) and the weakly elastic liquids. We explain this effect occurring as a result of the high viscoelasticity of the sodium polyacrylate solution. Additionally, a ‘bungee jumper’ jet behaviour (Morrison and Harlen in Rheol Acta 49(6):619–632, 2010) is observed in a regime of high speed ($$10<V_j<40$$ 10 < V j < 40 m/s) and high viscosity ($$\mu >20$$ μ > 20 mPa s) not previously examined. We additionally characterise the viscoelastic non-breakup jet limit using the Bazilevskii et al. (Fluid Dyn 40(3):376–392, 2005) ejection criterion. Herein, the extensional rheological parameters are measured implementing a novel DoS-CaBER technique (Dinic et al. in Lab Chip 17(3):460–473, 2017). Our findings may influence results of inkjet printing technologies and recent nozzle-free ejection systems for ejecting liquids with non-Newtonian properties. Graphical abstract

AbstractOil-in-water (O/W) emulsions are water-based lubricants and used as fire-resistant hydraulic fluids and metalworking fluids (MWFs) in industry. The (elasto-)hydrodynamic film-forming properties of O/W emulsions have been studied extensively in literature. Typical elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) behaviors are revealed at low rolling speeds followed by a starved EHL regime at elevated speeds. These emulsions are self-prepared and mostly stable only for a limited time ranging from hours to several days. By contrast, the film-forming behavior of water-miscible commercial MWFs (long-term stable O/W emulsions) has rarely been reported. This restricts the understanding of the lubrication status of many tribological interfaces in manufacturing processes, e.g., the chip-tool contact in cutting. In this work, the (elasto-)hydrodynamic film-forming property of two commercial MWFs is investigated by measuring the film thickness on two ball-on-disc test rigs using different optical interferometry techniques. For comparison, two self-prepared simple O/W emulsions with known formulation have also been investigated. Experimental results from the two test rigs agree well and show that the two self-prepared emulsions have typical EHL behaviors as reported in literature. However, for the two commercial MWFs, there is almost no (elasto-)hydrodynamic film-forming ability over the whole range of speeds used in this study. This could be explained by the cleaning and re-emulsification effects of the MWFs. The lubrication mechanism of the two MWFs is mainly boundary lubrication rather than hydrodynamic lubrication. Abstract Bayesian optimization (BO) is an efficient and flexible global optimization framework that is applicable to a very wide range of engineering applications. To leverage the capability of the classical BO, many extensions, including multi-objective, multi-fidelity, parallelization, and latent-variable modeling, have been proposed to address the limitations of the classical BO framework. In this work, we propose a novel multi-objective BO formalism, called srMO-BO-3GP, to solve multi-objective optimization problems in a sequential setting. Three different Gaussian processes (GPs) are stacked together, where each of the GPs is assigned with a different task. The first GP is used to approximate a single-objective computed from the multi-objective definition, the second GP is used to learn the unknown constraints, and the third one is used to learn the uncertain Pareto frontier. At each iteration, a multi-objective augmented Tchebycheff function is adopted to convert multi-objective to single-objective, where the regularization with a regularized ridge term is also introduced to smooth the single-objective function. Finally, we couple the third GP along with the classical BO framework to explore the convergence and diversity of the Pareto frontier by the acquisition function for exploitation and exploration. The proposed framework is demonstrated using several numerical benchmark functions, as well as a thermomechanical finite element model for flip-chip package design optimization.

Verification is considered a critical stage of any chip development cycle. This step ensures that the design meets the system requirements and specifications. At this stage, test cases are developed, and the invention's functionality is checked. But it is supposed that Verification takes almost 60% of the total chip development chip cycle. It makes it a critical stage in any chip flow since any bug found post routing is a bit tough to remove, and also, post-fabrication, it is challenging to correct the design. The project focus on improving the efficiency of verification cycle. It can be achieved by introducing a Debug Checker in the Testbench itself, which reduces verification time many folds. The project targets segregating the potential bug region once any mismatch or error is found in Testbench.

Commodore’s C64 was a musical powerhouse. Its on-board sound chip, the Sound Interface Device, gave it the functionality of a professional three-channel digital synthesizer. This chapter explores the development of the machine and how its feature set was determined by a corporate battle over cheap calculator chips. The power of the Sound Interface Device, however, made it very complex and difficult to use. Even seasoned developers needed time to explore all of its intricacies, and it took time to unlock its full potential. In the days before graphical editors, writing music on the Commodore required a high degree of musicality and a deep understanding of the low-level hardware architecture. As a result, it was on the Commodore 64 that the role of video composer became more specialized and more professionalized and the craft of writing music drivers, code to perform digital music, really became established.

The first two sections delineate the early history of the nomina sacra, staurogram, and chi-rho, from the late first to third centuries AD as well as relevant early Christian discourse on the symbolic meanings of certain letters and graphic signs, and show how the staurogram and chi-rho developed from utilitarian abbreviation signs into symbolic visual proxies for God and Christological concepts. The next two sections provide an overview of the use of graphic signs as protective seals among various religious communities, with reference to artefacts such as the Bruce Codex and votive leaves from Water Newton, and compare the early usage of more acceptable Christian signs with the concurrent culture of the so-called ‘magical’ characteres. The final section underscores that the early development of Christian graphicacy should be seen in the context of a general predilection for apotropaic graphic devices in the Imperial period, and in late antiquity in particular.

The first section tests the main interpretations of Lactantius’ passage on Constantine’s victorious sign in 312 against existing graphic evidence from the 310s and early 320s, and consequently supports the interpretation of Lactantius’ description as a rhetorical device invented or modified by the Christian narrator. The next two sections support the argument that the perception of the chi-rho as Constantine’s triumphant sign became entrenched in courtly culture and public mentalities from the mid-320s onwards, and trace the diachronic change of the chi-rho from its paramount importance as an imperial sign of authority under the Constantinian dynasty to its hierarchic usage alongside the tau-rho and cross in the Theodosian period. The final section presents a contextualized discussion of the encolpion of Empress Maria and mosaics from several early baptisteries, illustrating the paradigmatic importance the chi-rho and tau-rho for early Christian graphicacy around the turn of the fifth century.

The performance of composite spreaders cooled by nucleate boiling of FC-72 liquid and made of top porous graphite layer (≥ 0.4 mm or ΔPG ≥ 0.2), for enhancing nucleate boiling, and copper substrate (≤ 1.6 mm), for efficient spreading of the thermal power dissipated by underlying chips is investigated. The spreaders are of the same thickness (2.0 mm) and have square surface areas that are sized depending on the composition and cooling condition of the spreaders. The 10 × 10 mm and 15 × 15 mm chips considered in the analysis are assumed to uniformly dissipate the thermal power. With composite spreaders (ΔPG = 0.2) cooled by 30 K subcooled nucleate boiling the removed total dissipation thermal powers of 160.3 W and 98.4 W from the 10 × 10 mm and 15 × 15 mm chips, respectively, are attainable at total thermal resistances of 0.29 and 0.48 °C/W, respectively. When these spreaders are cooled by saturation nucleate boiling, however, the removed dissipation thermal powers (85.6 W and 53.4 W, respectively) and the total thermal resistances (0.12 and 0.20 °C/W, respectively) are much lower. For same cooling conditions, the removed dissipation thermal powers by the porous graphite spreaders (ΔPG = 1.0) are much lower and the thermal resistances are much higher than those with composite spreaders, because of the relatively low and anisotropic thermal conductivity of porous graphite. Results also showed that the surface temperatures of the chips are not uniform. The maximum chip temperatures at the highest removed dissipation powers by composite spreaders are < 71 °C and the temperature differentials across the chips are < 8 °C. Results demonstrated that composite spreaders are an attractive option for cooling high power computer chips at relatively low chip temperature.

Abstract Continuing advances in Atom Probe Tomography and Focused Ion Beam Scanning Electron Microscope technologies along with the development of new specimen preparation approaches have resulted in reliable methods for acquiring 3D subnanometer compositional data from device structures. The routine procedure is demonstrated here by the analysis of the silicon-germanium source-drain region of a field effect transistor from a de-packaged off-the-shelf 28 nm design rule graphics chip. The center of the silicon-germanium sourcedrain region was found to have approximately 180 ppm of boron and the silicide contact was found to contain both titanium and platinum.

In this study, chip formation mechanism during the machining of austempered ferritic DI and the effect of the emerging chip morphology on such machining properties as surface roughness and cutting forces has been scrutinized. After austenitizing at 900 °C for 90 min, DI specimens were austempered in a salt bath at 380 °C for 90 min. Chip roots were produced by using a quick stop device during the machining of austempered specimens in different cutting speeds. The metallographies of these specimens were performed and chip morphologies were examined. The fact that the cutting speed increased led to a decrease in built-up edge formation. Depending on this fact, it was detected that the change in built-up edge thickness substantially affected the surface roughness and cutting forces. It was also detected that during the machining, with the effect of cutting forces and stress, spheroidal graphites were broken off in the chip and lost their sphericity and so that the chip became fragile and unstable and grafites here displayed a lubricant feature.

We propose a generalized method for adapting and optimizing algorithms for efficient execution on modern graphics processing units (GPU). The method consists of several steps. First, build a control flow graph (CFG) of the algorithm. Next, transform the CFG into a tree of loops and merge non-parallelizable loops into parallelizable ones. Finally, map the resulting loops tree to the tree of GPU computational units, unrolling the algorithm’s loops as necessary for the match. The mapping should be performed bottom-up, from the lowest GPU architecture levels to the highest ones, to minimize off-chip memory access and maximize register file usage. The method provides programmer with a convenient and robust mental framework and strategy for GPU code optimization. We demonstrate the method by adapting to a GPU the DPLL backtracking search algorithm for solving the Boolean satisfiability problem (SAT). The resulting GPU version of DPLL outperforms the CPU version in raw tree search performance sixfold for regular Boolean satisfiability problems and twofold for irregular ones.

Abstract Processor energy density is exceeding the capabilities of conventional air-cooling technology, but two-phase cooling has the potential to manage these resulting heat fluxes at reliable temperatures and higher electrical efficiency. When two-phase cooling is used in tandem with overclocking, data center footprints are reduced as individual chip processing power can be set at limits well beyond the manufacturer’s Thermal Design Power (TDP) or nominal operating condition. This study examines how Liquid Nitrogen (LN2) can be used with Additive Manufacturing (AM) and overclocking to increase the computational performance of a commercially available GPU. The power consumption and frequency relationship were established for both the cryogenically cooled solution and a comparative air-cooled solution. The cryogenic solution saw up to a 17.4% increase in compute efficiency and an 18.1% improvement in compute speed with comparable power efficiency at an equivalent performance level to the air-cooled solution. This study considers the computational performance and efficiency gains that can be acquired through cryogenic cooling on an individual graphics card, which can be replicated on a larger scale in data center applications.

Level monitoring was described by Macleod and Pelletier1 and elaborated on by Zhao2 and has been shown to have error compensation capabilities of potentially great benefit to optical coatings of certain types. The insight into the principles can tend to be obscured by the mathematics for even those with advanced education. We review the principles of level monitoring using circle diagrams to aid in their visualization and show how to design the level monitoring scheme for various cases including the design of precoated monitoring chips. The film thickness sensitivity of various optical monitoring strategies varies considerably. We discuss ways to choose the more sensitive strategies in particular cases to increase the repeatability of the results. Zero level trigger point monitoring offers great sensitivity of change in reflectance vs change in thickness, and it should therefore give small optical thickness errors when optically monitored. We describe zero level trigger point monitoring and how and when it can be applied.

Channel Islands National Park (CHIS) has conducted long-term ecological monitoring of the kelp forests around San Miguel, Santa Rosa, Santa Cruz, Anacapa and Santa Barbara Islands since 1982. The original permanent transects were established at 16 sites between 1981 and 1986 with the first sampling beginning in 1982, this being the 33rd year of monitoring. An additional site, Miracle Mile, was established at San Miguel Island in 2001 by a commercial fisherman with assistance from the park. Miracle Mile was partially monitored from 2002 to 2004, and then fully monitored (using all KFM protocols) since 2005. In 2005, 16 additional permanent sites were established to collect baseline data from inside and adjacent to four marine reserves that were established in 2003. Sampling results from all 33 sites mentioned above are included in this report. Funding for the Kelp Forest Monitoring Program (KFM) in 2014 was provided by the National Park Service (NPS). The 2014 monitoring efforts utilized 49 days of vessel time to conduct 1,040 dives for a total of 1,059 hours of bottom time. Population dynamics of a select list of 71 “indicator species” (consisting of taxa or categories of algae, fish, and invertebrates) were measured at the 33 permanent sites. In addition, population dynamics were measured for all additional species of fish observed at the sites during the roving diver fish count. Survey techniques follow the CHIS Kelp Forest Monitoring Protocol Handbook (Davis et al. 1997) and an update to the sampling protocol handbook currently being developed (Kushner and Sprague, in progress). The techniques utilize SCUBA and surface-supplied-air to conduct the following monitoring protocols: 1 m2 quadrats, 5 m2 quadrats, band transects, random point contacts, fish transects, roving diver fish counts, video transects, size frequency measurements, and artificial recruitment modules. Hourly temperature data were collected using remote temperature loggers at 32 sites, the exception being Miracle Mile where there is no temperature logger installed. This annual report contains a brief description of each site including any notable observations or anomalies, a summary of methods used, and monitoring results for 2014. All the data collected during 2014 can be found in the appendices and in an Excel workbook on the NPS Integrated Resource Management Applications (IRMA) portal. In the 2013 annual report (Sprague et al. 2020) several changes were made to the appendices. Previously, annual report density and percent cover data tables only included the current year’s data. Now, density and percent cover data are presented in graphical format and include all years of available monitoring data. Roving diver fish count (RDFC), fish size frequency, natural habitat size frequency, and Artificial Recruitment Module (ARM) size frequency data are now stored on IRMA at https://irma.nps.gov/DataStore/Reference/Profile/2259651. The temperature data graphs in Appendix L include the same graphs that were used in past reports, but include additional violin plot sections that compare monthly means from the current year to past years. In addition to the changes listed above, the layout of the discussion section was reordered by species instead of by site. The status of kelp forests differed among the five park islands. This is a result of a combination of factors including but not limited to, oceanography, biogeography and associated differences in species abundance and composition, as well as sport and commercial fishing pressure. All 33 permanent sites were established in areas that had or were historically known to have had kelp forests in the past. In 2014, 15 of the 33 sites monitored were characterized as developing kelp forest, kelp forest or mature kelp forest. In addition, three sites were in a state of transition. Two sites were part kelp forest and part dominated by Strongylocentrotus purpuratus...
