This report covers the first 2.5 years of production of five alfalfa varieties (CUF 101, SW 14, SW8210, Pioneer 5888, and a grower selection originating from CUF 101 and noted as Baldwin Select) that were planted in October, 1994, into large plots (0.75 acres) to obtain actual field harvest data. Data are reported from 22 harvests thus far in the study, including five from 1997. Varietal hay yields were very similar in 1995 until mid summer, when area soil temperatures reached above 100°F at the four inch depth for a period of about 6 weeks. During the summer months of 195 -1996 Baldwin Select had significantly higher yields than other varieties tested. Statistical differences in accumulated hay yields were noted beginning in August 1995 and have continued. during 1996. Baldwin Select has the highest yielding variety each year thus far, producing 8.8% more than CUF 101, worth $233 /acre. Alfalfa varieties have been very similar in relative feed value when tested. Yellowing from Empoasca spp. leafhoppers was greatest during the 1995 -1996 winter on varieties with fall dormancy ratings of 9 or greater. Weed infestations during late summer 1996 appear to be inversely correlated with fall dormancy, for which Baldwin Select significantly higher than CUF 101.

[From Editorial] This Special Issue of the Journal comprises a selection of papers based on research on ageing in African countries, which were read at the Third Global Conference. The papers were revised and peer reviewed prior to acceptance by the Journal. The theme of the Special Issue is "Ageing in urban and rural Africa." Each of the papers included in the issue deals with a situation of ageing-in-place, a late-life migratory pattern, or the impact, or implications of social forces and social change on older Africans, in either an urban and/or a rural setting, or in both types of settings in Africa. The papers also draw together the main sub-themes and strands of the conference, particularly those relating to the family, ubuntu, urbanization, AIDS, and income security and poverty.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Every investor that invests in JSE Securities Exchange listed shares wants to achieve optimum profits. Numerous tools are used to help investors and analysts to analyse buy signals, standard deviations, risk-adjusted returns and every possible piece of information that may lead to perfect recommendations. Despite all the problems and issues involved to make perfect recommendations, it seems as if some individuals achieve well above average results. There are no obvious reasons for the success they achieve. Often it may be ascribed to a combination of detailed technical analysis, market intelligence as well as gut-feel. This study evaluates the recommendations made by the analysts and quantifies the accuracy. Different scoring systems are used to evaluate the accuracy of the recommendations and a ranking of the analysts is compiled. Risk-adjusted returns are investigated in detail and are used in the calculations. The results of this study show that some analysts outperformed the rest by substantial margins.

Die sukses kan nie aan ooglopende aspekte toegeskryf word nie en dit berus meestal by 'n kombinasie van gedetaileerde tegniese analise, markintelligensie en "gut-feel". Hierdie studie is daarop toegespits om vooruitskattings van analiste te evalueer en die akkuraatheid van die aanbevelings te kwantifiseer. Verskeie punte stelsels word gebruik om die akkuraatheid van die aanbevelings te evalueer en 'n ranglys word opgestel na aanleiding van die resullate. Nine alfalfa varieties, most not previously tested under field conditions in Arizona, were planted October 29, 1997 using the same setting on a Great Plains Solid Stand 13 End Wheel drill. Varieties differed in lbs. of seed/acre planted, ranging from 28.0 for CUF 101 to 21.3 for Alto. Five cuttings were obtained through August 1998. The variety Alto yielded the most hay in the first and fourth cuttings and had the highest total yield from the first five harvests. Varieties with fall dormancy class ratings of 8 usually had higher yields than varieties of dormancy 9 during the spring and early summer growing season, which was below normal in temperature, resulting in class 8 dormancies having the highest total yields thus far.

Eight harvests were taken during 1995, and seven thus far in 1996. Varietal hay yields were very similar in 1995 until mid summer, when area soil temperatures reached above 100 °F at the four inch depth for a period of about 6 weeks. During the summer months of both years Baldwin Select significantly outyielded other varieties tested. Statistical differences in accumulated hay yields were noted beginning in August 1995 and have continued during 1996. Baldwin Select was the highest yielding variety during 1995 (103.3% of CUF 101), followed by CUF 101 and Pioneer 5888, both which averaged 1.16 tons /acre per harvest. SW 14 and SW 8210 yielded about 550 total lbs /acre less than CUF 101 during 1995. Baldwin Select has also been the highest yielding variety in 1996 thus far, yielding 113.6% of CUF 101. SW 8210 has been second (107.6% of CUF 101), followed by SW 14 (102.7% of CUF 101), with CUF 101 and Pioneer 5888 again being almost equal in yield at 1.14 tons /acre per harvest. For 1995- 1996 combined, Baldwin Select has yielded 108.2% of CUF 101, followed by SW8210 (101.9% of CUF 101). CUF 101, Pioneer 5888 and SW 14 are very similar in overall tonnage. Alfalfa varieties have been very similar in relative feed value when tested. Yellowing from Empoasca spp. leafhoppers was greatest during the 1995 -1996 winter on varieties with fall dormancy ratings of 9 or greater. Baldwin Select has yielded $121 /acre more hay than CUF 101, and SW8210 has yielded $44 /acre more hay than CUF 101 thus far in this trial.

This research report is a completed Catchment Diagnostic Framework (CDF) for the Klip River catchment (Johannesburg) for the period October 1998 to September 1999. The framework consists of a catchment description and a diagnostic index which provide a simple and representative view of the catchment and its characteristics and assist in identifying problem areas. GIS maps, graphs and tables are used to provide a background of the catchment. The Diagnostic Index is based on a set of Indicators that are calculated and then scored according to a rating system allowing for the calculation of an overall value for the catchment. The indicators and description cover resource conditions, socioeconomics, water quantity, water quality and management. Using this CDF it was found that the Klip River catchment is highly altered due to mining, urban, industrial and agricultural development. All of these have impacts on the beneficial use of the Klip River itself and on the downstream users of the Vaal Barrage.

This research looks at the way Australia is portrayed in the Western European press, particularly in the light of Australia's recent emphasis on being a clever country, within the Asia Pacific region. The research is based on a quantitative and qualitative analysis of all articles explicitly referring to Australia, in seven newspapers from Belgium (2), France (2), Germany (1) and the United Kingdom (2), over a 6 month period. The main hypothesis was that those newspapers without Australian based correspondents or stringers picture Australia in a stereotypical way and that "news" in those papers, instead of giving "news", reinforces existing ideas and images held of Australia. My research supports the hypothesis, but also uncovers the very important role played by editors at home. They decide what is important, what is news and their choice will go to consonant "news". The research shows that newspapers in Europe largely portray Australia's older images, with its kangaroos, koalas and beaches peopled by sportsmen. Australia is largely portrayed as an almost untouched country inhabited by animals to be found nowhere else, and by people (mainly white Anglo- Saxon males) reputed for their friendliness, as well as for their laziness and sometimes their strangeness. "Newer" images of Australia promoted by the Australian government (e.g. Australia as a clever country and part of the Asia-Pacific region) get relatively little coverage in the Western European press.

The second Symposium on Settlement Indian Reserved Water Rights Claims was held in Albuquerque, NM on September 1-3 , 1992. Sponsored by the Native American Rights Fund and Western States Water Council, the symposium drew some 250 people from across the country. The symposium focused on negotiating Indian water rights settlements, and included discussions of alternative dispute resolution techniques, marketing, and jurisdiction over water use.

Achieving safe yield, the fundamental objective of Arizona's 1980 Groundwater Management Act (GMA), may prove to be a more elusive goal than once expected. The GMA mandated that the Phoenix, Tucson and Prescott Active Management Areas (AMAs) achieve safe yield, a balancing of groundwater withdrawals with recharge, by the year 2025. Some of the assumptions and projections used to set the goal, however, have not held up after 20 years, with the result that safe yield may be a difficult target for some AMAs to reach.

[From Editorial] The papers included in this special issue highlight some of the issues of elderliness and old age in Africa outlined above. Using different disciplinary approaches, the papers should appeal to age-old researchers in varied fields. In a discussion of old age and ageing in pre-industrial Africa, Sagner moves away from the rather simplistic images of old age which still beset many African gerontologists. Drawing on the Xhosa-speaking peoples in the 19th century he argues that the experience of later life was shaped by gender, kinship and "class" differences as well as by biographical factors, making for a variety of later-life experiences. He points out that old age was not a clear-cut period of life with unique demographic, economic or social characteristics/ conditions, set apart from earlier life phases. However, he notes that (deep) old age was firmly tied to religious and metaphysical beliefs. He argues that loss of bodily functions in (deep) old age was hardly stigmatizing as the loss was socially constructed as a sign of increasing other-worldliness. By linking old age with superhuman agency, the ideological hegemony of old age remained unbroken, despite bodily decline, even though the latter could herald loss of this-worldly status and, finally, abandonment in the bush. Moller and Sotshangaye discuss contemporary relations between Zulu grandmothers and grandchildren in South Africa's KwaZulu-Natal province. Though the grandmothers whom the two authors interviewed expressed deep concern about losing the respect of their grandchildren, in the eyes of the latter old age is, surprisingly, not denigrated as a possible source of moral guidance. Moller and Sotshangaye point out that strains in the grandmothers-grandchildren relationship are located in the rapidly changing social context which easily tends to outdate the elders' teaching, rather than in the intergenerational politics of the family per se. Paradoxically, however, macro-social changes have also led to a re-strengthening of the grandmothers' moral authority. The paper also shows that successful ageing- in the sense of one's personal happiness in old age - is, at least partly, relational defined.
Moving northwards up the subcontinent to Mozambique, da Silva records the results of a case study on the situation of older people who had to cope with several long-standing wars and natural disasters in their lifetimes. She analyses the repercussions which endured displacements, forced migrations and other war-related life-course experiences had on the lives of today's elderly, both at the personal and social level. In detailing social policy propositions she reminds us that there is a fundamental divergence between how older people are represented in some authoritative discourses and the social reality of old age. To overcome the prevailing negative representations of old age is of utmost practical importance, as the problematicity image encourages non-participatory government approaches and hinders thus the empowerment of the elderly. Turning to a methodological plane, Mommersteeg details some of the problems - and advantages - which the use of interpreters in qualitative research settings entail. In keeping with a hermeneutic approach, he shows that the interpreter is in fact a culture broker, rather than a mere provider of a linguistically correct translation. Mommersteeg's paper illustrates very well that interviews which are mediated through interpreters are not dialogically but triologically constituted, as are their "products" - the storied voices of the interviewees. In her article, Coetzee reports on exploratory field research in an old-age centre outside Bloemfontein in South Africa's Free State province. Based on participant observation and in-depth interviews she finds that elderly residents experience old age negatively. Though this subjective reality partly reflects the residents' difficulties in adjusting to their ageing bodies, it is mainly grounded in her subjects' difficulties to construct a framework within which their present position in the world could be instilled with personal/social meaning. Coetzee' s paper stresses both the relevance of a life course perspective and a gender-sensitive approach to the study of old-age experience.

The broad social issue of generational competition versus generational interdependence is discussed. The way elders are housed offers an excellent example of how benefits putatively allocated to older people in fact more often than not subsume benefits to family members of all ages. Data on generationally shared households from a number of countries and the results of recent studies from the United States are discussed in this context. Separate housing of generations is often preferred where feasible. Where economic, environmental. health, or social needs of either elder or young generations make autonomous households dysfunctional, members of each generation show in their household-formative behaviour their willingness to assist the other generation .

This special issue of SAJG on "The family and ageing in Africa" marks yet another step in the annals of the African Gerontological Society (AGES). The first major step was taken in December 1993 when the society held its first workshop in Accra, Ghana to discuss an agenda on ageing. The results of the workshop were published under the title Effective responses to ageing in Africa by the year 2000 (Apt, Bester & Insley, 1995). Twenty years ago it would have been an impossible task to assemble African scientists and social welfare practitioners to discuss the subject of ageing. Very little researched information existed then and many African governments were likely to assert that ageing was no problem in their country. Even in the 1980s a great deal of scepticism existed in Africa about the need for African gerontology research. Today, and taking a cue from the deliberations of the first AGES workshop, there is no country in our region that is not confronted with the negative impacts of development and urbanization as their country charts its route towards modernization. Even though an ageing agenda still has a low profile on the economic desks of many African governments, the realisation that there are indeed difficulties to be overcome regarding the care of elderly people in Africa is widespread.

The guest editor of the special issue is Maria Cattell of Millersville University, Pennsylvania, USA, who has conducted substantial research on older Kenyans and more recently on Zulu grandmothers. Dr Cattell is the President of the global Association of Anthropology and Gerontology (AAGE). The issue will comprise research papers from authors in several African countries, and will provide valuable data and experience of ageing in Africa for transnational comparison.

[From Editorial] Articles in this Special Issue on health and ageing in Africa come from a broad spectrum of disciplines and the articles reflect a wide range of topics. Three contributions deal with the maintenance of good health. Remaining active is a key component of successful ageing which minimizes the loss of functional independence in the elderly. An investigation of the role of gender in the analysis of gait of older people by Macfarlane, Nicholson and Muller provides important methodological information which may be applied in practical outcomes-based assessments. The development of a reliable tool to assess gait, as a measure of lower-extremity function, is thus pertinent. There is growing evidence that good nutritional status is an important determinant of optimal cognitive and physical functioning in older people and influences both quality of life and health status. In a study of institutionalized elderly women in Cape Town, Charlton, Joosen and Jaffer report a high prevalence of suboptimal vitamin C status. The authors make out a case for low-dose micro-nutrient supplementation in residents of homes for the aged, particularly in homes where a cook-chill catering system is operated. They suggest that ongoing nutritional assessment should be an integral part of the care of older residents. In keeping with the topic of nutrition, Walker, a prolific author on public health issues in Africa over the past 50 years, has contributed a guest column in which he addresses the nutrition-ageing paradigm from an epidemiological viewpoint. He highlights opportunities for high-quality research on the association between life-style factors and healthy ageing in the continent. Moving on to a specific form of health-care delivery, Makoni examines language practices in the care that is rendered to older residents of a Cape Town nursing home. He describes barriers in communication between nursing staff and residents from different ethnic backgrounds, which compromise the quality of care that is rendered and which may result in conflict and tension between staff and residents. In her article, Tlou evaluates a community-based programme in which older women who live in rural areas of Botswana are trained to educate members of their communities in the prevention of the spread of the HIV I AIDS virus. The findings demonstrate the benefits of targeting lay persons for health education activities in rural Africa and the utilization of older persons, in this case women, as a valuable resource. The special issue also includes two opinion pieces and an item which opens debate. In separate contributions, Wilson and Duodu examine challenges facing effective health-care service delivery systems for older persons in African countries and express their opinions in this regard. Wilson's suggestions for multidisciplinary specialist teams, including incontinence teams, nutrition teams and vision teams, and for the development of training for lay people to become generic " rehabilitation assistants," are examples of appropriate community-based African solutions to health service delivery needs of the older population. Duodo makes similar suggestions to those of Wilson, specifically regarding geriatric care service delivery in Ghana. He also highlights the common practice of traditional self-medication in rural-dwelling older Ghanaians. Readers are invited to comment on, and indeed to augment, the authors' opinions in Letters to the Editor. To date, very little work has been done in South Africa on biological aspects of ageing. In a short contribution on the free radical theory of ageing, Van Rensburg and Potocnik open debate on this topic. Once again, readers are invited to contribute to debate in this area in letters to the editor, for publication in the following number of the journal.

Dans la première partie, nous avons présenté le contexte ivoirien. Bien que la Côte d’Ivoire ait le statut de nation, l’identité ethnique résiduelle met à mal la cohésion nationale. Au temps du Président Houphouët-Boigny, la question d’identité ne se posait pas avec acuité, puisque le parti unique avait un candidat unique. En 1970, Kragbé Gnagbé, un nationaliste, a voulu contester la suprématie baoulé. Il a été arrêté et tué. Laurent Gbagbo a repris le flambeau de la lutte pour le multipartisme. Après la mort d’Houphouët en 1993, la succession n’a pas été clarifiée par des élections ouvertes à tous les candidats en 1995. Le Président Bédié a voulu favoriser l’intégration avec le concept d’ivoirité, mais ce concept a abouti à une logique de fragmentation. La contestation estudiantine a continué à troubler la paix sociale jusqu’au 24 décembre 1999, date du coup d’Etat qui a amorcé une transition militaire avec à la tête le Général Guéi. Mais la transition s’est refermée sur des élections calamiteuses en octobre 2000, avec une fois encore l’exclusion des principaux candidats. Il nous semble que les deux discours, celui de l’ivoirité et celui du nationalisme anti-colonial, ont des sphères de collaboration. Celui du Président Bédié visait à écarter Alassane Ouattara. Celui de Kragbé Gnagbé avait pour but de prendre le pouvoir pour nationaliser l’économie et faire partir l’armée française. Les deux discours prônent une identité nationale, mais les critères sont flous. Notre corpus reflète tous ces problèmes, d’abord politiques. Nous avons commencé à constituer notre corpus pendant le Forum pour la réconciliation nationale (9 octobre-18 décembre 2001). La nécessité de la réconciliation a été reconnue officiellement. Une chanteuse évangélique a accueilli les participants avec une mélodie pleine d’espoir. A travers les communications de trois ONG féminines, nous avons alors compris que leurs revendications sont politiques. Les victimes des forces armées plaident pour la reconstitution du tissu social. Nous avons appelé leurs récits « la rhétorique des victimes ». L’apparition de « victimes » est symptomatique du désordre social. La chanteuse évangélique est la seule femme qui réapparaît dans la deuxième période de notre corpus : mars-juillet 2003. Sa deuxième chanson traduit le raidissement suite au coup d’Etat manqué du 19 septembre 2002. L’émission « On est ensemble » sur La Première évoque de nouveau la nécessité de réconciliation. Les invitées cernent les contours de la réconciliation, mais aussi, elles lancent des offensives contre les rebelles, la France, le Premier ministre et le gouvernement de réconciliation nationale. Bien qu’elles parlent de réconciliation, leurs propos apportent la preuve de l’évanescence de cette issue pacifique de crise. De nouveau, nous avons la rhétorique des victimes, cette fois des forces armées des forces nouvelles (FAFN). L’animatrice apparaît comme une griotte du chef de l’Etat, mais elle participe au débat national sur certains points
Our hypothesis was that women would produce radio and television programmes that would appease the tensions in cote d'ivoire. The forum for national reconciliation (oct-dec 2001) provided the opportunity for women to express themselves. Our corpus is made up of the communications of women at the forum. Victims of armed men bear witness. We have termed their words "the rhetoric of victims", symptomatic of the breakdown of the social tissue. On the 19 september 2002, an attempted coup d'etat polarized opinions. The country is cut in two. The tv programme "together we stand" is called upon to help the war or peace effort ? the women guests express themselves on the issue of reconciliation, the rebels, france, the prime minister, the national reconciliation government. It appears that reconciliation is made all the more difficult because of the diabolization of the rebels. The victims of the rebels bear witness. In an effort to block the vote of a law on amnisty, two women lawyers bring victims before the national assembly. The speeches of the women are political. The tv programme is a political meeting. No contradictory debate is scheduled. The orchestration of the attacks is made clear by the publication of articles in the press. The materialistic view of man is the basis for the propaganda diffused by the powers that be. However the woman patriots are animated by a certain religious fervour, with the emergeance of the biblically political woman. The militarization of public space makes women's participation in the national debate even more difficult

In this study, a rapidly east-coastal cyclogenesis event that took place during 3-4 October 1987 is investigated using a nested-grid version of the Penn State/NCAR mesoscale model (MM4) with a fine mesh grid size of 25 km. It is shown that the MM4 model reproduces reasonably well the growth of the cyclone from a coastal frontal zone, its subsequent track, intensity, circulation structures and its associated precipitation. It is found that the coastal cyclogenesis occurs in a favorable large-scale environment with pronounced thermal advection in the lower troposphere and marked potential vorticity (PV) concentration aloft associated with the tropopause depression. The transport of warm and moist air from the marine boundary layer by the low-level inshore flow provides the necessary latent energy for the production of the observed heavy precipitation and a variety of weather phenomena.
A series of 24-h sensitivity simulations are performed to examine the relative importance of diabatic heating, large-scale forcing and the quality of initial conditions in the cyclogenesis. To determine why several model simulations failed in predicting correctly all of the observed scenarios, a dynamical nudging experiment is conducted to provide a "ground-truth" dataset. L'analyse des aspects diplomatico-militaires de la stratégie égyptienne durant la période allant du 5 juin 1967 au 6 octobre 1981, consiste à déterminer la logique qui administre le processus de prise de décision en matière de politique étrangère égyptienne. À cet effet, il a été mis l'accent dans la première partie sur la rupture brusque de l'équilibre politico-militaire, illustrée par la guerre des six jours et les tentatives diplomatiques avortées pour un règlement politique du conflit arabo-israélien, suivie par une réorientation globale de la stratégie égyptienne qui allait déboucher sur le quatrième conflit armé arabo-israélien d'octobre 1973, marquant ainsi la percée américaine au Proche-Orient par le truchement de la politique de "petits pas", prélude a une paix séparée entre l'Égypte et Israël. La seconde partie souligne l'émergence d'une nouvelle approche égyptienne du conflit arabo-israélien. Le retour à l'"égyptianité" au détriment des aspirations pan-arabes, opéré par le président Sadate et illustré par son voyage à Jérusalem en novembre 1977, puis par la conclusion des accords de camp David, consacrant la première paix séparée au Proche-Orient et aggravant par la même le problème palestinien. Ainsi, cette entreprise de "paix" n'était rien de plus qu'un élément parmi d'autres, consacre par une révision de fond en comble de l'équation stratégique égyptienne, se traduisant par une profonde reconversion, en majeure partie volontaire, de ses orientations politiques, économiques et stratégiques dont les grands axes sont la normalisation avec Israël et l'étroite alliance avec les États-Unis qui allait être consacrée par l'alignement du Caire sur Washington
The analysis of the diplomatic and military aspects of the Egyptian strategy during the period going from 5th june 1967 to 6th october 1981, consists in determinating the logic which leads the decision making process in the egyptian foreign policy. For this purpose, emphasis has been put in part i on the blunt cut of the political and military equilibrium illustrated by the six days war and the failed diplomatic attempts to a political settlement of the arabic-israelian conflict, followed by a global reorientation of the Egyptian strategy which was going to open on the fourth arabic-israelian armed conflict of october 1973, marking thus the american breakthrough in the near east, through the policy of "step-by-step", the prelude to a separate peace between Egypt and Israel. Part 2 underlines the emergence of a new egyptian approach in the arabic-israelian conflict. The return to "egyptianity" to the detriment of pan-arabic aspirations, operated by president sadate and illustrated by his trip to Jerusalem in november 1977, then by the conclusion of the camp david agreements which established the first separate peace in the near east and worsened by the same the palestinian issue. Thus, this "peace" undertaking was nothing else than a single element among others, established by an utterly review of the Egyptian strategic equation, which was expressed by a deep reconversion, for the most part voluntary, of its political, economical and strategic orientations, the main broad directions of which are the normalization with Israel and the close alliance with the United States which was going to be established by the alignment of Cairo to Washington
