Attitudes and beliefs about parent participation in occupational therapy are shifting toward family-centered practice worldwide. However, adopting a family-centered approach in a society such as Korea, where a Confucian culture of hierarchical roles is reflected in a strong medical model, can prove to be very difficult. A parent training program was developed at the HOPE Center, a pediatric occupational therapy center, to bridge the gap between the traditional medical model and the ideal family-centered model. This study examined the effectiveness of the parent training and gauged parents’ perceptions and experiences of a more family-centered approach to therapy. Four parent-child dyads living with autism participated in five months of parent training at the HOPE center. The results on the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure showed that the parent training improved the occupational performance of both children and parents. Six open-ended questions were used to investigate parents’ perceptions and experiences of parent training. Two broad themes emerged: improved self-efficacy and the cultural reality of living with autism in Korea. This study demonstrates that building parent training into an occupational therapy program may optimize the effectiveness of any therapy and introduce a more family-centered approach to therapy while maintaining cultural integrity.

Integrating basic occupational health services into primary care is encouraged by the Pan American Health Organization. However, concrete initiatives are still scarce. We aimed to develop a training program focusing on prevention of occupational risks for primary healthcare professionals. This train-the-trainer program was piloted at four universities in Chile and Peru. Occupational health or primary healthcare lecturers formed a team with representative(s) of one rural primary healthcare center connected to their university (Nparticipants = 15). Training started with a workshop on participatory diagnosis of working conditions. Once teams had conducted the participatory diagnosis in the rural communities, they designed in a second course an active teaching intervention. The intervention was targeted at the main occupational health problem of the community. After implementation of the intervention, teams evaluated the program. Evaluation results were very positive with an overall score of 9.7 out of 10. Teams reported that the methodology enabled them to visualize hazardous working conditions. They also stated that the training improved their abilities for problem analysis and preventive actions. Aspects like time constraints and difficult geographical access were mentioned as challenges. In summary, addressing occupational health in primary care through targeted training modules is feasible, but long-term health outcomes need to be evaluated.

Peace is a prerequisite for creating an environment in which all people have the capacity to live safe and productive lives and to engage in meaningful activities and occupations; however, creating caring communities and measuring the impacts of peace is a challenge. To address this concern, nonprofit organizations strive to promote equity and justice by engaging in both direct service and advocacy work. One local nonprofit, the Peace Learning Center, works to promote peace in the Indianapolis community through a variety of innovative educational and advocacy programs, including equity learning, restorative practices, social emotional learning, and family learning. Uniquely, occupational therapists engaging in community-based work provide a lens through which key environmental factors, such as peace, are viewed as vital in consideration of the context surrounding a person and provide a perspective of how peace can affect the tasks and performance in which people are able to engage. Through a semester-long collaborative partnership, Indiana University occupational therapy doctoral candidates and the Peace Learning Center conceptualized peace and created implementable tools for measuring the impacts of the nonprofit’s efforts on peace building in the Indianapolis community. The following outlines the evaluative process that the student group performed and provides replicable tools and recommendations for surveying peace building impacts in K-12 restorative justice programming. By implementing these peace-measuring assessments, the Peace Learning Center will be able to gather both qualitative and quantitative data about perceived safety, violence, and peace from youth and parents in the communities that the organization serves. Recognizing the need for program evaluation, occupational therapy students have provided the Peace Learning Center with vital outcome measures that can lead to program remodeling, content recreation, and improved training, resources and follow up for facilitators, all within the profession’s scope of practice in the community-based realm.

This article presents the results of a three-year (Nov. 2010–Dec. 2013) model test that was part of the “Occupational Training for a Sustainable Development” program sponsored by the German Bundesinstitut für Berufsbildung (Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training). It was conducted by the University of Oldenburg’s department of vocational training and business education jointly with the Bundestechnologiezentrum für Elektro- und Informationstechnik e. V. (BFE) (Federal Center for Electrical Engineering and Information Technology). The model test pursued two different, albeit connected research approaches: a concept-development and a theory-modelling approach. The first one successfully developed, implemented and evaluated the unique, flexible and modularized renewable energies/energy efficiency specialist advanced training as defined by §42a of the German Chamber of Crafts’ trade and crafts code. The second stream of theory-modelling complemented this by gaining well-founded insight that helps to describe and explain how exactly an occupational training works for sustainable development in professions operating in the energy sector.

ABSTRACT Introduction Military-Civilian partnerships (MCPs), such as the Navy Trauma Training Center, are an essential tool for training military trauma care providers. Despite Congressional and military leadership support, sparse data exist to quantify participants’ clinical opportunities in MCPs. These preliminary data from an ongoing Navy Trauma Training Center outcomes study quantify clinical experiences and compare skill observation to skill performance. Materials and Methods Participants completed clinical logs after each patient encounter to quantify both patients and procedures they were involved with during clinical rotations; they self-reported demographic data. Data analyses included descriptive statistics and chi-square statistics to compare skills observed to skills performed between the first and second half of the 21-day course. Results A sample of 47 Navy personnel (30 corpsmen, 10 nurses, 3 physician assistants, 4 physicians) completed 551 clinical logs. Most logs (453/551) reflected experiences in the emergency department, where corpsmen and nurses each spent 102.0 hours, and physician assistants and physicians each spent 105.4 hours. Logs completed per participant ranged from 1 to 31, (mean = 8). No professional group was more likely than others to complete the clinical logs. Completion rates varied by cohort, both overall and by clinical role. Of emergency department logs, 39% reflected highest acuity patients, compared with 21% of intensive care unit logs, and 61% of operating room logs. Penetrating trauma was reported on 16.5% of logs. Primary and secondary trauma assessments were the most commonly reported clinical opportunities, followed by obtaining intravenous access and administration of analgesic medications. With few exceptions, logs reflected skill observation versus skill performance, a ratio that did not change over time. Conclusion Prospective real-time data of actual clinical activity is a crucial measure of the success of MCPs. These preliminary data provide a beginning perspective on how these experiences contribute to maintaining a skilled military medical force.

The research evaluates the implementation of Occupational Safety and Health (K3) in Indonesian Community Health Centers (Puskesmas), with a focus on risk management, standard preventive measures, and fatal work accidents. Despite efforts to implement an Occupational Safety and Health Management System (SMK3), research shows gaps in the understanding and awareness of Community Health Center officers regarding standard preventive measures. Fatal accidents, such as electric shocks and fires, highlight the need for holistic risk management. Recommendations include regular training, equipment maintenance, and ongoing evaluation to improve OSH practices in these health facilities. These measures support the quality of healthcare and patient safety. This research was conducted using a systematic literature review guided by the PICO Framework to formulate specific and focused research questions. This research shows that careful planning has a key role in the successful implementation of Occupational Safety and Health (K3) in Community Health Centers, with the use of technology such as web-based reporting systems to increase efficiency. Continuous evaluation is an important instrument for identifying successes and challenges in K3 implementation, while external involvement and support is needed to overcome internal and external obstacles. Constraints such as lack of resources are the main focus, but evaluation also opens up opportunities for improvement, especially in the implementation of K3 policies and procedures. Optimizing K3 planning strategies is the key to increasing compliance and effectiveness of K3 management at the Community Health Center level, with an expanded focus on continuous supervision and monitoring.

ContextAfter several warning signals coming from senior physicians working in a Department of pediatrics at a large university hospital, the Department of occupational health decided to assess objectively the psychosocial risks to which this personnel was exposed.MethodsA research team from the scientific unit of the Institut National de Santé Publique du Québec has developed an identification grid with markers that help understanding and limiting physical and psychological risks at work. This grid includes characteristics of the workplace environment and various aspects of management practices. It is based on theoretical models such as ‘Demand-Latitude-Support’ (Karasek & Theorell, 1990), ‘effort-reward imbalance’ (Siegrist, 1996), ‘organizational justice’ (Adams, 2000), and ‘prevention’ (Kristensen, 1999). The assessment involved an interview guide with a scoring system of data collected from credible persons familiar with the working environment. After adequate training in the use of the interview guide, an occupational physician and an occupational psychologist interviewed jointly each of 34 pediatricians and 3 managers and scored the 12 items of the guide according to specific recommendations. The data collected from the interviews were submitted to a thematic analysis.ResultsThe analysis showed that the working environment of the Department was not favorable to the return to work or work-life balance. Regarding management, the warning signals pointed to heavy workloads, lack of recognition, and communication problems. There were some protecting factors such as support from colleagues, some decision latitude (but limited possibilities of knowledge development) and, unevenly between wards, support from the hierarchy. The most negative indicators were reported by junior doctors and, as expected, by temporary personnel.DiscussionAccording to these results, group involving the assessment team, pediatricians, and ward managers will be formed to suggest improvements in the fields of human-resource management, communication, recognition, workloads, and occupational health.

Summary Background Hemophilia is a congenital bleeding disorder with an estimated frequency of 1:10,000 births. Repeated joint bleeding is a hallmark of the disorder and leads to painful hemophilic arthropathy. Regular exercise can help improve joint stability and function, reduce the risk of injury and bleeding and improve physical fitness and quality of life. This method paper describes an online training concept aiming to offer access to appropriate exercise instructions for people with hemophilia who are not able to attend regular training at a hemophilia center. Methods The online exercise program is accessible through the homepage of the Department of Physical Medicine, Rehabilitation and Occupational Medicine of the Medical University Vienna as well as through scanning a QR code printed on information material using a smart phone or tablet. Results The program contains exercises to improve mobility, coordination, muscular strength and flexibility. A brief introduction is given by a hematologist, a pediatrician and a physiatrist. An introductory video informs about contraindications and essential precautions, such as medical attendance and sufficient factor therapy to consider before starting the training. Another video gives advice on the exercise composition. The demonstrated exercises are explained by a physician and are available for adults and children. To individualize training recommendations and offer further diagnostic tools and physical treatment options as necessary, the Department of Physical Medicine, Rehabilitation and Occupational Medicine of the Medical University of Vienna will establish consultation hours for people with hemophilia. Conclusion As hemophilia is an orphan disease, patients are mainly treated in specialized centers. For patients who live far from these centers or have limited access to a training there for other reasons, the physical medicine consultation hour and the implementation of online exercise instructions offer individually adapted exercise information for a regular home-based training to benefit from increased physical fitness and joint stability.

Abstract Introduction Polytrauma, to include major limb amputation, in a military population presents unique rehabilitation challenges with the overarching goal of restoring function leading to the primary question, “Is this Service Member (SM) capable of returning to duty following rehabilitation?” The US military has a vested interest in maximizing injured SMs occupational performance to allow for return to duty. The purpose of this report is to describe marksmanship (shot grouping and weapon qualification) and return to duty outcomes following a course of VRE-based firearm training in a polytrauma patient population. Methods The medical records, stored in the Armed Forces Health Longitudinal Technology Application (AHLTA), of all patients who received rehabilitative care at the Center for the Intrepid (CFI) to include VRE-based firearms training between 01OCT2015 and 01AUG2016 were manually reviewed for inclusion. Subjects included all adult (18 years and older) SMs (active duty at time of admission) with a diagnosis of polytrauma who had been referred to and treated (received additional services such as physical and or occupational therapy) at the CFI. Approval for this research was received from the Brooke Army Medical Center Department of Clinical Investigation Office of the Institutional Review Board. Results Medical records of 30 SMs with a polytrauma diagnosis met the inclusion criteria. Mean shot group sizes for the M9 and M4 weapon decreased between initial and post training time points for the M9 zero (p = 0.009) and M4 zero (p = 0.020). There was no significant difference between initial and post training time points at the other shooting distances with either weapon. There was an 89% qualification rate for both the M9 (n = 18) and M4 (n = 19) weapons for those who attempted qualification; 43% of the population (n = 13) did not attempt qualification with either weapon. Conclusion SMs with polytrauma demonstrated a high rate of weapon qualification (accuracy) following VRE-based firearm training. Shot group size (precision) at short distances with a M9 pistol and M4 rifle also improved with training. While overall marksmanship appeared to improve, high return to duty rates were not directly related to firearm training or marksmanship. Future efforts need to focus on consistent clinical documentation of firearm training procedure and the establishment of psychometric properties for marksmanship outcome measures.

We aimed to evaluate the effects of an occupational training program via telerehabilitation on well-being (WB), occupational balance (OB), intrinsic motivation (IM), and quality of life (QoL) in Syrian refugee children resettled in Turkey during the COVID-19 pandemic. This was a single-center, prospective, randomized, non-blinded trial in which children aged 13–15 years and attending a secondary school were recruited. OB, WB, IM, and QoL were evaluated via the OB Questionnaire (OBQ11), the Well-Star Scale (WSS), the IM Scale (IMS), and the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL). The intervention group attended online occupational therapy classes. Online classes were carried out as five sessions per week, each session lasting 1 h, for 3 weeks. Questionnaires were performed at the outset of the study and following the training program. Overall, 52 refugee children were randomized into the intervention and control groups, each including 26 children. The mean OBQ11, WSS, IMS, and PedsQL scores significantly improved more in the intervention group than in the control group. This was the first study investigating the effects of a customized online training course on OB, WB, IM, and QoL in Syrian refugee children, also affected unfavorably by the COVID-19 lockdown. Our results showed significant improvements in all the study scales that we used to quantify the alterations in the aforementioned traits.

OHS in mining activities is generally known as the Mining Occupational Health and Safety Management System (MOHS) which will regulate how and what forms of prevention and control both potential hazards or risks occur during mining activities. Drilling is one of the stages carried out before blasting activities. This is to obtain drilling fast, with the right position. The drilling, which was carried out at the Underground Mining Training Center, used a Jumbo drill and Jackleg machine. Risk identification is the process of identifying hazards, assessing risks and developing management strategies. The application of risk management has benefits including being able to guarantee business continuity by reducing the risk of every activity that contains a hazard, while the purpose of this study is to identify potential hazards and control the risk of work accidents for both workers and trainees at the Sawalunto Underground Mining Training Center.

AbstractBilingual call centers in El Paso, Texas, an extensively bilingual US-Mexico border setting, provide a valuable opportunity to examine empirically what occurs with respect to language shift reversal of Spanish in the context of new information economy. Interviews were conducted with thirty-nine call center operators and managers, and twelve translators and interpreters. Call centers provide an important occupational performance of and recognition to the Spanish language. Nevertheless, bilingual call centers mainly rely on uncompensated, socially provided language skills in Spanish, a freely available “heritage language” in the border setting. Spanish is not valued as a technical competency, worth specific attention to training, management of language features, and extra compensation. Bilingualism is used in the labor market as a sign of cheap and flexible labor, rather than as economically and socially valued “skill,” even though in the new information workplace it serves the latter role. Teachers in workshops of vocational education training (VET) schools are at risk of exposure to occupational hazards, as are the rest of the teaching staff. However, due to the characteristics of these workshops, these teachers are exposed to a greater extent to other types of risks, such as noise or vibrations. Exposure to these risks for vocational training teachers has been little studied compared to other risks, such as voice disorders. In this study, exposure to noise and vibration was evaluated for teachers in a vocational training center in Cordoba (Spain), working in body shops. The values obtained from the measurements taken for different tasks and machine tools showed that the exposure limit values specified in the corresponding regulations were reached and even exceeded. This implies that these types of risks must be taken into consideration for these types of teachers, and that measures must be taken to mitigate their effects.

The subject of this research is the question of advanced training of math teachers on organization of tests for assessment of students’ academic performance. The author determines the problems associated with ineptitude of the teachers to develop materials for testing academic achievements, insufficiency of advanced training courses dedicated to diagnostic and assessment of academic performance of students, lack of theoretical knowledge for conducting diagnostic procedures. Special attention is given to the requirements to professional competences of teachers in the area of assessment of students’ academic performance, formulated in the occupational standards of pedagogues, Federal State Educational Standard of public education, and Concept of Mathematical Education of the Russian Federation. The definitions of pedagogical diagnostic testing formulated by K. Ingenkamp, I. P. Podlasy, V. M. Polonsky, A. B. Vorontsov are presented; the stages of diagnostic testing activity are outlined. As one of the solutions, the author describes the training experience of math teachers of Novosibirsk in the classes of consulting center and creative team, arranged by the Municipal Center of Education Development on the premises of Gymnasium No.10. The scientific novelty consists in elaboration of training course for the teachers (thematic content is presented in the article) and its implementation by the author. Activity of the center and creative team received the awards of city and regional contests “Secret of Success”, “Innovations in Education”, and “Educational Siberia”. In the beginning of training, the teacher were offered to fill in the questionnaire for defining their goals from taking these classes. Some of the survey results are provided in the article. Although the training of teachers is still in progress, their feedback and awards of pedagogical contests hold out a hope that its is the right path.

Education and employment are both moderate risk factors for recidivism. There is a well-documented relationship between low educational achievement and antisocial behaviors. Education programming in correctional facilities is crucial for improving the educational attainment of incarcerated and re-integrating populations. A brief discussion situates policy reform efforts against a backdrop of extensive research that has documented the interaction between employment and increased educational attainment as pivotal to reducing an individual’s propensity to recidivate. The policies then focus on three pillars that reduce employment barriers for returning citizens: workforce training, educational upgrading, and regulatory employment barriers. In the short-term, policymakers should study and address systemic remedial educational needs in tandem with increasing access to and occupational skills-based training that builds a skill base congruent with the current labor market for incarcerated students. In the mid-term, it is essential to match policy support with the intersecting barriers faced by returning citizens. As an example of federal policies that can help center the public workforce development system around the need to improve quality employment outcomes for returning citizens, the DOL’s dormant pilot Linking to Employment Activities Pre-Release (LEAP). Finally, policymakers should target other consequential screening barriers, such as the accuracy of criminal records that employers can check and have been shown to adversely affect employment prospects.

Abstract: Gender affirmation is standard medical care, and community input is an essential component of patient-centered care. This study shares how our organization assessed patients' perceptions of health care organizations that provide gender-affirming care. Building on qualitative interview data, we distributed an online survey via a lesbian-gaybisexual-transgender-queer research firm. The survey was completed by 314 transgender individuals residing in 37 U.S. states and territories. Most respondents (69%) reported negative experiences seeking health care. Patients would travel long distances for competent providers and were more willing to seek care from an institution actively working to change a formerly negative reputation. Patients described high-quality organizations as prioritizing staff training (95.5%), having inclusive policies (93.3%), and hiring expert staff (86.0%). Programs should ensure cultural competency training for all staff. They should recruit and retain providers skilled in transgender medicine, especially trans-identified providers. Patient experience and reputation in the community influence where patients seek care.

Abstract Introduction: India being a country of agriculture, most of its population is engaged in agriculture-based activities in a varied manner either directly or indirectly. This sector of activity being most unorganized, very little attention has been given to the occupational health problems of these workers. Objectives: To evaluate the socioeconomic profile of agriculture-related occupational health hazards like physical, chemical, biological, mechanical, respiratory, and dermatological, agriculture-related occupational health hazards. Materials and Methods: The present study was a retrospective record-based observational study conducted in 3 health centers (2 PHCs and 01 Tertiary care Health center) of tribal area of western Maharashtra over a period of 12 months with a sample size of 274 cases. Results: We found an increased incidence of occupational hazards among males of age group 21–60 years and illiterate individuals mainly during rainy and winter seasons. Out of the 274 cases, 22.99% were illiterate. Biological occupational hazards were the most prevalent form of occupational hazard contributing 81.02% of total cases, the majority of cases (64%) arising due to snake bites followed by scorpion bites (19%). Of total 274 cases of occupational hazards 10.21% cases were of mechanical hazards and 6.93% cases of chemical hazards. Another prevalent factor associated was addiction to some substances like alcohol or tobacco in about 74% of cases. This suggests that addiction may be one of the important contributory factors related to occupational hazards. Conclusion: There is high burden of agricultural related occupational hazard especially the biological hazard and addictions like substance abuse may be a contributory factor for mechanical injury as well as biological hazard. We Suggest ways to minimize incidences of occupational hazards which may include Awareness and education to target population about various hazards and their prevention, Periodic medical examination based on hazard. Vocational training and rehabilitation may also be given due attention by health policymakers and government at all levels.

Introduction: In 2007, the first formal postgraduate nurse practitioner (NP) residency program was launched at Community Health Center, Inc., a large Federally Qualified Health Center in Connecticut, and focused on primary care and community health. There are numerous post-graduate nurse practitioner training programs across the nation, and many more are under development. Although the literature describes the impact of postgraduate residency training programs on new NPs’ early practice transition, to date, no studies have examined the long-term impact of postgraduate NP training programs on alumni’s career choices, practice, and satisfaction. This study sought to understand the impact over time of Community Health Center Inc.’s postgraduate NP residency program on the subsequent career paths of alumni who completed the program between 2008 and 2019. Additionally, it explored alumni’s current reflections on the impact of their postgraduate residency training on their transition to the post-residency year and beyond, as well as their professional development and career choices. Moreover, it sought to identify any previously undocumented elements of impact for further exploration in subsequent studies. Methods: This was a retrospective cohort study that used an electronic survey and interviews. All 90 of the alumni who had completed Community Health Center Inc.’s residency between 2008 and 2019 were invited to participate. Results: The survey’s response rate was 72%. Most (74%) of the participating alumni indicated they were still practicing as primary care providers. Of these, 57% were practicing at FQHCs. Nine subthemes were identified from the interviews, with an overarching theme that the program was foundational to a successful career in community-based primary care and that the impact of the program continues to evolve. Conclusion: Community Health Center Inc.’s postgraduate NP residency program had a long-standing impact on alumni’s commitment to continuing in primary care practice, as well as their engagement in leadership activities to ensure quality care.

Balance control with an upright posture is affected by many factors. This study was undertaken to investigate the effects of real-time visual feedback training, provided by smart wearable devices for COP changes for healthy females, on static stance. Thirty healthy female college students were randomly divided into three groups (visual feedback balance training group, non-visual feedback balance training group, and control group). Enhanced visual feedback on the screen appeared in different directions, in the form of fluctuations; the visual feedback balance training group received real-time visual feedback from the Podoon APP for training, while the non-visual feedback balance training group only performed an open-eye balance, without receiving real-time visual feedback. The control group did not do any balance training. The balance training lasted 4 weeks, three times a week for 30 min each time with 1–2 day intervals. After four weeks of balance training, the results showed that the stability of human posture control improved for the one leg static stance for the visual feedback balance training group with smart wearable devices. The parameters of COP max displacement, COP velocity, COP radius, and COP area in the visual feedback balance training group were significantly decreased in the one leg stance (p < 0.05). The results showed that the COP real-time visual feedback training provided by smart wearable devices can better reduce postural sway and improve body balance ability than general training, when standing quietly.

Background: The COVID-19 mass vaccination campaign posed new challenges not only from a healthcare perspective, but also in terms of distribution, logistics, and organization. Managing clinical risk in off-site vaccination centers during a pandemic provided a new opportunity for the training and acquisition of competencies through continuous learning from adverse events. The aim of this report, based on a review of activity, was to identify the most recurrent and high-risk failures of the vaccination process in a mass vaccination center. Methods: Adverse events and near misses reported during the first 11 months of activity (February 2021–January 2022) in the mass vaccination center of Verona (Italy) were evaluated. Results: From 15 February 2021 to 17 January 2022 the center administered about 460,000 doses to the population and nine adverse events and one near miss were reported. Most of the events were errors in vaccine administration, either in principle, dosage, or timing with respect to the indicated schedule. All events had minor outcomes. Communication errors, inadequate training, and general organizational issues were the most recurrent factors contributing to the events. Conclusions: Risk mitigation during mass vaccination in temporary sites is an essential element of a successful vaccination campaign. The reporting of adverse events should be encouraged in order to obtain as much information as possible for a continuous improvement of the activity.

Early childhood obesity is at epidemic proportions. Early child care providers have a unique opportunity to instill healthy eating and active living behaviors in children that can foster lifelong health. Academic–community partnerships that involve collaborations between child care centers, local public health departments, and universities provide one avenue to strengthening healthy eating and active living–related knowledge and skills among early child care providers. This quality improvement pilot intervention, titled Healthy Child Care Makes a Healthy Start, is one example of this type of collaboration. This quality improvement pilot project consisted of two complementary intervention components. Inspectors were trained to cofacilitate a strategic planning process with university researchers to help providers implement healthy eating and active living–related policy, system, and environment changes in their child care homes and centers. An average of five changes were implemented in participating child care locations. Inspectors also received training on health-related best practices and delivered 1-minute health messages to child care providers during routine inspection visits. This type of innovative partnership has the potential to leverage a currently existing relationship between child care providers and licensing and regulation inspectors and shift the relationship to include dissemination and implementation of health messaging in child care center and home settings.

Training adolescents as student researchers is a strategy that can improve the delivery of care at school-based health centers (SBHCs) and significantly shift school health policies impacting students. From 2003 to 2006, the University of California, San Francisco, in partnership with Youth In Focus, implemented a participatory student research project to enhance the existing evaluation of the Alameda County SBHC Coalition and its participating clinic members, and to help develop and implement school health policies. Providing opportunities and training that enabled youth to identify and research the health needs of their peers, as well as advocate for improvements in SBHCs based on their research findings, represents an exciting youth development strategy. This article describes the role the youth played, how their adult partners supported their work, and the impact that their efforts had on the SBHCs and school health programming and policies in the areas of condom accessibility and mental health services.

Abstract The Tobacco Regulatory Science Program is a collaborative research effort between the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). In 2013, the NIH funded 14 Tobacco Centers of Regulatory Science (TCORS), which serve as partners in establishing research, training, and professional development programs to guide FDA. Each of the fourteen TCORS, and two other NIH-funded research programs, the Center for the Evaluation of Nicotine in Cigarettes (CENIC) and the Consortium on Methods Evaluating Tobacco (COMET), pursued specific research themes relevant to FDA’s priorities. A key mandate for FDA is to reduce tobacco use among young people. This article is a review of the peer-reviewed research, including published and in-press manuscripts, from the TCORS, CENIC, and COMET, which provides specific data or other findings on youth (ages 10–18 years) and/or young adults (ages 18–34 years), from 2013 to 2018. Citations of all TCORS, CENIC, and COMET articles from September 2013 to December 2017 were collected by the TCORS coordinating center, the Center for Evaluation and Coordination of Training and Research. Additional citations up to April 30, 2018 were requested from the principal investigators. A scoring rubric was developed and implemented to assess study type, primary theme, and FDA priority area addressed by each article. The major subareas and findings from each priority area are presented. There were 766 articles in total, with 258 (34%) focusing on youth and/or young adults. Findings relevant to FDA from this review concern impact analysis, toxicity, health effects, addiction, marketing influences, communications, and behavior. Implications The Tobacco Centers of Regulatory Science, CENIC, and COMET have had a high output of scientific articles since 2013. These Centers are unique in that the FDA supports science specifically to guide future regulatory actions. The 258 articles that have focused on youth and/or young adults are providing data for regulatory actions by the FDA related to the key priority areas such as the addictiveness of non-cigarette products, the effects of exposure to electronic cigarette marketing on initiation and cessation, and the impact of flavored products on youth and young adult tobacco use. Future regulations to reduce tobacco use will be guided by the cumulative evidence. These Centers are one innovative mechanism to promote important outcomes to advance tobacco regulatory science.

Stakeholders in vocational training are required to provide appropriate learning opportunities that can be used to develop the needed skills induced by technological change and thereto affected changes in the type of jobs, skill needs, activities, and other economic effects. In light of this, serious games have enormous potential, as they can simulate complex real-life situations without disrupting operations, but in a playful and motivating way, and with adaption to the individual needs of the users. This paper explores the question, how to find appropriate serious games matching the needs for a specific job and skill level. Within the research project “Serious Games for Vocational Education and Training” funded by the German Ministry for Science and Education, the Serious Games-Information Center (SG-IC, a classical web-based information system in form of a portal) and its underlying Serious Games Metadata Format (SG-MDF), as semantic basis for the description and retrieval of serious games, is enhanced according to the characteristics and needs in the field of vocational education and training (VET). Educational stakeholders can use the search engine to identify personalized game-based learning opportunities for their individual target groups. The identification of appropriate educational games is based on classifications of occupations, and skill levels on the learning side, and metadata information for the games on the gaming side (i.e. target user group, game genre, learning topics and additional keywords). The paper motivates the use of metadata and classification systems and presents the results of a literature search and overview of established classification systems of occupations, with a focus on Germany, but with correspondence to international systems. Based on that analytic work, an application profile ‘vocational education and training’ as an added ‘variant’ of the SG-MDF has been elaborated and integrated within the SG-IC as search engine for educational games for vocational training. Hereto serious games are matched with a database of occupational fields as defined by the Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training, and main activity as defined by the microcensus, the largest annual household survey of official statistics in Germany.

As part of a randomized controlled trial, a pilot study was conducted to determine the inter-rater reliability of four assessments administered by individuals with and without a background in health care. The assessments included in the study were the Barthel Index (Mahoney & Barthel, 1965), the Mini Mental Status Examination (Folstein, Folstein, & McHugh, 1975), the Philadelphia Geriatric Center Morale Scale (Lawton, 1975), and the Instrumental Activities of Daily Living Scale (Lawton & Brody, 1969). The scores of three assessors, one senior occupational therapist, and two research assistants were examined. The research assistants were trained to administer the assessments by the occupational therapist but had no previous background in health care. Inter-rater reliability for the measures varied from .97 to 1.00 indicating that, with adequate training, research assistants with no health care background could administer the assessments in a consistent manner.

Abstract Meningococcal epidemics at 2 training facilities were early examples of outbreaks fueled by military demographics and because of lethal drug-resistant bacteria for which there are no vaccines or chemoprophylaxis. Positive outcomes included the elucidation of the natural history of meningococcal colonization and disease and the initiation of vaccine development.
