Overweight and obesity are health problems that can affect many children and adolescents around the world. The literature has identified that the prevalence of overweight and obesity is high in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (Saudi Arabia) in children and adolescents attending schools in Saudi Arabia. Student counselling practices can be a cost effective way to help students to deal with overweight and obesity in Saudi schools. The aim of the study was to conduct an evidence-based review of the literature in order to suggest new approaches to applying student counselling services and programmes in order to directly combat overweight and obesity in schools in Saudi Arabia. The study used a non-empirical review of the literature on overweigh and obesity and on student counselling in the United Kingdom and Saudi Arabia. The study argues that in theory student counsellors in schools in Saudi Arabia are ideally placed to help to directly address and reduce the existing high prevalence of overweight and obesity in youths and adolescents attending schools in Saudi Arabia. This could be done using a combination of dietary interventions and counselling methods. The research study concludes that student counselling in schools in Saudi Arabia could potentially be used to directly help to combat and reduce levels of overweight and obesity among school children and adolescents in the long term.

Overweight and obesity among adolescents is one of the most serious public health problems of the 21st century. They play a potential role in the development of a number of socially significant non-communicable conditions and diseases. Objective. The aim of the study was to determine the prevelance of overweight and obesity among Bulgarian teenagers of both sexes and age range from 13 to 18 years based on anthropometric parameters – height, weight, and body mass index. Methods. It was conducted a survey of anthropometric indicators on a representative sample of region Stara Zagora, Bulgaria in September-October 2016. The study population included 481 school students aged 13-18 years. The classification of overweight and obesity status was determined by body mass index (BMI) for age and sex according to the WHO Growth Reference for children aged 5–19 years. Results. The results of the transversal study showed increased levels of overweight and obesity among adolescents – 14.96% and 3.74%, respectively. The percentage of overweight in the individual age groups ranged from 10.52% to 19.54%. The leaders in the sample on this indicator were 18-year-old male students – 11.49%. The prevalence of obesity among different age groups varied from 1.13% to 6.25%. The highest values of obesity were found in 13- and 14-year-old school students – 6.00% and 6.25%, respectively. Conclusion. The research found increased prevalence of overweight and obesity among Bulgarian adolescents aged 13–18 years. It requires effective health programs, active civic self-awareness, and personal participation to limit this extremely harmful process that has already reached a pandemic spread. Background: The problem of overweight and obesity is not confined only to developed countries but is also widely prevalent in developing countries. The study under report relates to determining prevalence of obesity and overweight in adolescent school boys. Objective: The objective of this study was to assess the prevalence of overweight and obesity in boys of public and private secondary schools, Faisalabad, and to relate it with their dietary style and physical activity. Study Design: Cross sectional and institutional based study. Methods: A total of 600 school boys of different age groups from the classes 6th to 10th were randomly selected and included for anthropometric measurements to categorize them into normal, overweight and obese individual. Their diet pattern and physical activity records were taken to correlate it with the obesity level. Results: The collected data revealed that 423 (70.5%) boys were normal. Whereas 98 (16.3%) were found to be overweight. Out of these, 72 (24.0%) were from private schools; while 26 (8.7%) were from government schools. Only 6 (2.0%) fell into obese category, and all belonged to private schools. No one was found to be obese in government schools. Mean ± SD weights (kg) in government and private school boys were 50.93 ± 7.18 and 56.34 ± 11.94, respectively whereas mean ± SD heights (m) of government and private schools boys were found to be 1.55 ± 6.64 and 1.56 ± 7.92 respectively. The data was statistically analyzed which exhibited significant relation with weight and BMI value. Conclusions: The prevalence of overweight was significantly higher in boys who ate junk foods and spent more time in watching television and sitting before computers. The findings of this study was found in agreement with certain earlier studies that revealed prevalence of obesity is to be on the increase among the private school boys of the area. It is, therefore, emphasized that regular physical exercise, regulated television viewing, doing household activities, balanced diet and healthy eating habits should be motivated in school children to ensure control of overweight and obesity, in this class of children.

ABSTRACT Overweight and obesity in children under five in Indonesia are still public health problems that can cause health problems. The purpose of this study was to analyze the risk factors associated with overweight and obesity in children under five in Indonesia, based on urban and rural areas. We conducted data analysis of the 2018 Basic Health Research (Riskesdas). The study design was cross-sectional. A total of 52,467 children aged 0-59 months met the research inclusion criteria from all provinces in Indonesia. A multiple logistic regression model was used to calculate the odds ratio (OR) adjusted for all variables, namely age, gender, place of residence, stunting status, birth weight, birth length, children weighed every month, education level of father and mother, working status father and mother, father and mother BMI to determine factors associated with overweight and obesity in children under five in Indonesia. The results showed that the prevalence of overweight and obesity in children under five did not differ significantly between urban and rural areas. Children under five who are stunted, have high birth weight, do not regularly weigh themselves every month, and mothers and/or fathers are overweight or obese, can increase the risk of overweight and obesity in children under five in urban and rural areas. Community interventions are needed to promote nutrition and health practices for mothers and children, both in urban and rural areas, to prevent and reduce short-term and long-term complications due to overweight and obesity in children under five. Background: Eating habits were often linked with overweight or obesity. Several types of food that are often consumed by the public were known to be associated with the occurrence of being overweight/obesity. But information about the association of each type of food is lacking especially in young adults. Objectives: This study aimed to analyze the association between eating habits with overweight status among women young adults in Indonesia. Methods: This study analyzed 4966 adults from the fifth waves of the Indonesian Family Life Survey (IFLS5) in 2014. Eating habits are measured by the frequency of consumption of each type of food. A chi square test and logistic regression were used to explore the association between the variables with the overweight status among women young adults. Results: The prevalence of overweight and non-overweight were known to be 41.1% and 59.9%. Milk; cheese; and others consumption (p=0.006) and rice consumption (p=0.017) had negative correlation with overweight/obesity meanwhile sweet foods consumption was associated with overweigh/obesity (p=0,034). On the other hand, it is shown that there is no association between egg consumption, meat consumption, soft drink consumption, and fast food consumption with overweight status among women young adult (p>0,05). Conclusions: It was concluded that the consumption of sweet foods was associated with a higher likelihood of being overweight or obese. In addition, the consumption of rice and milk; cheese; butter; and others that were less frequent associated with a lower likelihood of being overweight or obese. Therefore, the consumption of sweet foods among adult needs to be limited in order to reduce and prevent the problem of being overweight.

Abstract Objectives Overweight/obesity (OO) among preschoolers is a major public health issue that has been linked to many factors. Food neophobia is an important factor in children's diet but has inconsistent associations with obesity. Intersectionality affects the outcome of any childhood events. This study examines: 1) direct association of FN and preschooler OO, 2) whether FN moderates or mediates the caregiver OO-preschooler OO association, and 3) intersectionality of sex and race and preschooler OO. Methods Baseline data were gathered from 52 childcare centers participating in a randomized controlled trial to promote healthy dietary habits. The sample included 500 preschoolers and caregivers. Children were weighed and measured; we calculated body mass index percentile (BMIp) and categorized them as OO vs. healthy based on CDC criteria. Caregivers reported their weight, family demographics, and completed the 2-item Household Food Security Scale and the Child Food Neophobia Scale. Logistic Mixed Models (LMM) were used with childcare centers as random effects, adjusting for child age, sex, race, and sociodemographic. Model 1 examined the association between FN and OO. Model 2 added the caregiver OO*FN interaction, and Model 3 examined FN as a mediator in the caregiver OO-preschooler OO association. Model 4 tested the sex*race interaction with preschooler OO. Results Children's mean age was 48 months (SD = 7.5), 55% boys, and 25.4% OO. Caregiver mean age was 36 years (SD = 5.7), 90% women, 67% educated at bachelor's or higher, 84% employed full-time, 13% food insecure, and 58% OO. In multivariable LMM, compared to normal weight, overweight and obese caregivers were 2.6 (95% CI: 1.6–4.3) and 3.9 (95% CI: 2.1–7.3) times, respectively, more likely to have OO child. FN was not associated with preschoolers’ OO directly or through moderation or mediation. The intersectionality of child race and sex was significant (P = 0.01) in predicting child obesity. Non-White girls had the highest mean BMIp, 69.3. Conclusions OO among preschoolers and caregivers was related. FN was not associated with preschooler OO either directly or indirectly. Research into the mechanisms linking caregiver and preschooler OO is needed. The elevated BMIp among non-white preschool girls calls for research focused on this population. Background and Aim: Overweight and obesity has a great impact on individual health and quality of life. Most of the psychosocial and physical health problems are considerably related with overweight and obesity in adolescents. The incidence of overweight and obesity accelerated in the developing world over the last decade. The present study aims to evaluate the prevalence of overweight and obesity among Pakistani adolescents. Methodology: This epidemiological study was conducted on 1764 Pakistani adolescents attending multi medical centers of Pakistan with an age ranges from 12 years to 19 years. The socio-demographic questionnaire was completed by each individual with a consent form. Demographic and anthropometric parameters were included in the questionnaire. The prevalence of overweight and obesity was determined based on body mass index calculation. Obesity and associated factors were analyzed through analysis of Univariate and multivariate logistic regression. Results: Out of total adolescents, 885 (50.2%) were male and 879 (49.8%) were females. The prevalence of overweight and obesity was 14.1% (male 18.5%; female 11.4%) and 5.4% (male 8.3%; female 4.4%) respectively. Boys were prevalent in overweight and obesity compared to girls (p<0.001). Using Multivariate logistic regression, male gender (OR=1.89, 95% CI 1.37-2.56), eating fruits 3 or more times per week (OR=1.39, 95% CI 1.03-1.79), and fast eating (OR=1.29, 95% CI 1.03-1.68) were considerably related to the overweight and obesity. Adolescents whose parents were overweight or obese (0.69, 95% CI 0.49-0.93) were improbable to be overweight or obese. Conclusion: Our study found a higher risk and prevalence of overweight and obesity among adolescent boys compared to adolescent girls in the recent few years. Gender, parental weight, and diet were key parameters for adolescents' obesity. There is a need for further intervention and national program establishment to decrease the incidence of overweight and obesity. Keywords: Overweight; Obesity; Adolescents

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the incidence of overweight/obesity and associated factors in children aged six years or less during a two-year follow-up. METHODS: This longitudinal cohort study followed 242 preschoolers from Florianópolis, Santa Catarina, from 2008 to 2010. The outcome was overweight/obesity (Z-score >+2) measured by accumulated incidence. The Chi-square test measured the differences between the study factors. The association between overweight/obesity and associated factors was analyzed by adjusted and crude rate ratios. RESULTS: Nine (4.00%) of the 222 non-overweight/obese children in 2008 were overweight/obese in 2010, indicating an accumulated incidence of overweight/obesity of 4.05% (1.4-6.7). The study accumulated incidence of overweight/obesity was 20.25/year/1000, similar to the incidence density of 20.65/year/1000. CONCLUSION: After adjustment, none of the study factors were associated with overweight/obesity. However, the lack of studies that investigate the incidence of overweight and obesity in preschoolers calls for longitudinal studies with larger samples that analyze not only the incidence of overweight/obesity but also other factors, such as the influence of parents' nutritional status on their offspring's nutritional status.

Background Although overweight/obesity is becoming a public health issue in low income countries, there is a paucity of evidence concerning overweight/obesity in Ethiopia. The aim of the study was to assess the magnitude of overweight/obesity and associated factors among second cycle primary school children in Kirkos Sub-City, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Methods A school based cross-sectional study was conducted among 482 children from May to June, 2019. Data were collected using a questionnaire and checklist. Data were entered using EpiData version 3.1 and exported into SPSS version 22.0. Bivariable and multivariable logistic regression analyses were done to identify factors associated with overweight/obesity. Level of statistical significance was declared at p ≤ 0.05. Results The overall magnitude of overweight/obesity was 21.2%. The magnitude of overweight was 13.7% while obesity was 7.5%. Vehicle availability, being from private school, not having friend(s), preferring sweet foods, eating breakfast irregularly, watching movies/Television while eating and physical inactivity were the factors significantly associated with overweight/obesity among second cycle primary school children. Conclusions The magnitude of overweight/obesity was high in the study area. Therefore, health and education sectors should promote healthy lifestyle to curb child overweight/obesity.

In the United States, overweight/obesity is more prevalent among those with low-income; higher income is related to greater leisure time physical activity (LTPA) and sedentary behavior (SB), which are inversely related to overweight/obesity. This study aimed to evaluate the role of LTPA and SB simultaneously in the income-overweight/obesity relationship. Cross-sectional data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2007–2014) were utilized (n = 10,348 non-older adults (aged 20–59 years)). A multiple mediator structural equation model was conducted to evaluate the indirect effects from income to overweight/obesity (Body Mass Index ≥25 kg/m2) through LTPA and SB simultaneously, controlling for confounding variables, including diet, smoking, and alcohol consumption. As expected, greater income was negatively associated with overweight/obesity. Income indirectly influenced overweight/obesity through LTPA (Indirect effect: B = −0.005; CI = −0.01, −0.003), and through SB (Indirect effect: B = 0.008; CI = 0.005, 0.01), in opposing directions. The direct effect from income to overweight/obesity remained statistically significant. LTPA partially accounted for the negative relationship between income and overweight/obesity; SB reduced the strength of the negative relationship between income and overweight/obesity. Targeted behavior approaches for weight management may be beneficial. Increasing LTPA among adults with lower income and decreasing SB among adults with higher income may provide some overweight/obesity protection.

The global prevalence of overweight and obesity has more than doubled between 1980 and 2008. Using the 2008 Ghana Demographic and Health Survey data, this study explored the association between biological, behavioural and socio-cultural factors and overweight and obesity among women in Ghana. The bivariate descriptive analysis and the binary logistic regression estimation technique were used to analyse the data. From the results, it was observed that there were significant associations between some of the factors and overweight and obesity. For instance, age was found to have a positive significant association with overweight and obesity for all categories while having four or more children was significant but negatively associated with overweight and obesity. The introduction of socio-cultural factors in the model did not affect the direction of association between age and overweight and obesity even though the strength of association reduced. Amongst the socio-cultural factors introduced in the model, all categories of education and wealth status had a positive significant association with overweight and obesity. The introduction of behavioural factors in the model did not change the nature of predictors of overweight and obesity. Alcohol consumption, contraceptive use and exposure to television were positively associated with overweight and obesity. The results underscore the relevance of biological, socio-cultural and behavioural factors in the planning and implementation of intervention strategies to address overweight and obesity among women in Ghana.

Some studies of women’s health show that the risk of overweight, obesity and non-communicable chronic diseases often appear in middle-aged, instead of maintaining the right weight, many women suffer obesity in this age group. Therefore, this study was conducted to determine the prevalence of overweight, obesity and related factors among women aged 40-59 years in Cang Long district, Tra Vinh province. The study uses multivariate analysis and descriptive methods for cross-sectional data of 531 women. The results of overweight and obesity are 26.7% and 4.3% respectively. The study found a statistically significant correlation between overweight and obesity with a number of factors. To be specific, women with higher education levels have the lower rate of overweight and obesity (p <0,01) and family history is also related to overweight and obesity (p <0,001), while the use of ≥ 4 units/day (abuse) will increase the higher rate of overweight and obesity than the group use less/no (p <0,001). The consumption of fruits ≥ 3 units/day has the rate of overweight, obesity higher than the consumption group < 2 units (p= 0,02). The group of women who have regular physical activity with moderate intensity has lower ratio of overweight, obesity than the irregular group (p= 0,006).

Abstract The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between timing of permanent tooth emergence with overweight and obesity in children from Brazilian Amazon region. The studied population consisted of 192 children, 09 to 12 year-old, from public schools at Manaus, Amazonas-Brazil. Clinical examination was performed and the tooth emergence was evaluated according to the number of permanent erupted teeth. Body mass index z-score was calculated. For the statistical analysis ‘Overweight/obese’ group was compared with ‘Normal weight’ group in a case to control ratio 1:2. The t-test based on age was used for means comparison between the groups. A linear regression analysis using age and gender as co-variants was used. The established alpha was 5%. One hundred twenty-seven children were classified as normal weight and 65 were classified as overweight/obese (49 were overweight and 16 were obese). Overweight/obesity condition was associated with the gender, in which boys had a higher chance to present higher weight conditions (OR=1.84; CI 95% 1.06-3.37; p=0.04). The mean number of permanent teeth was higher in the overweight/obesity group (p<0.001). Linear regression analysis demonstrated that nutritional status, gender and age were strongly associated with number of permanent erupted teeth (p<0.05). In conclusion, our study demonstrated that timing of permanent tooth emergence is associated with overweigh/obesity in children from Manaus, Brazil.

Maternal employment is associated with child overweight/obesity, but the mechanisms influencing this relationship are not clear among diverse populations. We examined the effects of employment and parenting variables on child overweight/obesity among low-income Black and Latino families. Using longitudinal data from the Three-City Study, we analyzed the effects of maternal employment and nonstandard work schedule on child overweight/obesity and examined time away from children, parenting stress, and parenting practices as potential mediators. Mothers who increased their work hours during preschool years had children with approximately 2.6 times the odds of overweight/obesity compared to mothers who did not change their work status. Time away from children partially mediated the association between employment and child overweight/obesity. More consistent family routines were associated with a 61% decline in odds of child overweight/obesity. Early increases in maternal employment elevated the odds of child overweight/obesity, but regular family routines reduced the odds of overweight/obesity among school-age children in low-income Black and Latino families.

Overweight and obesity are global public health problems. Although overweight and obesity are high in urban areas, the prevalence of overweight and obesity is increasing steadily in rural areas. However, interventions to address overweight and obesity in rural areas are limited. This study reports on the process of developing a facilitator guide for a nutrition education program on overweight and obesity in rural Ghana. The transtheoretical model guided this study. The study was conducted in three districts in the Eastern Region of Ghana. The facilitator guide was developed according to the Food and Agriculture Organisation’s (FAO) guidelines for planning community nutrition education. This study engaged nutrition and agricultural officers working in the study area and academics through an iterative process to draft, revise, and design the facilitator guide. The procedures included a desk literature review, analysis of secondary data, telephone interviews, a seminar and two workshops. The guide consists of five lessons. Lesson 1 creates an awareness of overweight and obesity by providing a definition and the Stunkard Figure Rating Scale. It also includes data on the prevalence of overweight and obesity and abdominal obesity of women in the study area. Lesson 2 discusses body image perceptions and their association with overweight and obesity. Lesson 3 highlights the economic, social and health consequences of overweight and obesity. Lesson 4 explains the four-star diet and how to achieve it. The lesson includes a description of each star of the four-star diet with local examples. Lesson 5 discusses physical activity and steps to increase physical activity. Each lesson ends with a key message. Songs were developed for Lessons 3, 4 and 5. This study describes the process of developing a facilitator guide for overweight and obesity education at the community level. The guide can be used to raise awareness of overweight and obesity and weight management.
