Background:Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is a systemic autoimmune disease characterized by specific vascular and obstetric manifestations and by antiphospholipid antibodies (aPL) positivity [1].To date, little is known regarding nailfold videocapillaroscopy (NVC) alterations in APS patients and in asymptomatic aPL-carriers, non-specific abnormalities being the most frequently reported [2,3,4].Objectives:To retrospectively analyze NVC alterations in APS patients and in asymptomatic aPL-carriers and to correlate NCV alterations with both clinical manifestations and serum aPL profile.Methods:Thirty-five aPL positive patients having received at least one NCV investigation (mean age 47 years, range 16-81, 31 female and 4 male) were retrospectively included in the study. For each patient complete medical history was collected with a particular attention to past vascular thrombosis and pregnancy morbidity. Patients were classified as affected by APS according to the updated Sapporo classification criteria [5]. Lupus anticoagulant (LAC), IgM and IgG anti-cardiolipin antibodies (ACL) and IgM and IgG anti-Beta2 Glycoprotein 1 (anti-B2GP1) were assessed in each patient according to the recommended procedures [5]. NCV parameters were analyzed in each patient, with a particular interest to hemorrhages or nailfold bed-parallel hemosiderin deposits (“comb-like”hemorrhages) presence [2,6]. Statistical analysis was performed by parametric and non-parametric tests.Results:Seventeen patients (mean age 49 years, range 16-81 years) were asymptomatic aPL-carriers and 18 (mean age 46 years, range 26-71 years) were affected by APS. Within APS patients, 16 had a history of vascular thrombosis and 2 had pregnancy morbidity; in 6 patients APS was secondary to other autoimmune rheumatologic conditions (3 to Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, 2 to vasculitides and 1 to Mixed Connective Tissue Disease).Among the total number of aPL-carriers and APS patients six patients showed a normal NVC pattern, 24 patients had non-specific NVC abmormalities and 5 patients had a “scleroderma-like” pattern. Interestingly, NCV microhemorrhages were significantly more frequent in APS patients than in asymptomatic aPL-carriers, both in score and in absolute (p=0.05 andp=0.04, respectively). Particularly, in APS patients “comb-like”hemorrhages had a statistically significant higher prevalence than isolated hemorrhages (p=0.03). Dilated capillaries score was significantly higher in APS patients than in asymptomatic aPL-carriers (p=0.01).Not any statistically significant difference was observed regarding other capillary parameters (score of giant capillaries, loss of capillaries, or anormal shpaes, i.e. angiogenesis). Not any statistical correlation was observed between NVC parameters and different aPL profile.Conclusion:The study shows that the total number of microhemorrhages and in particular the“comb-like”subtype, are significantly the most frequent specific abnormalities in APL patients when compared to asymptomatic aPL carriers. The presence of the “scleroderma like” NVC pattern may suggest a concomitant overlap syndrome. Not any correlation was found between aPL profile and other NVC parameters. Aims: In this study, we attempted to identify clinical parameters predicting the absence or presence of Neurovascular Compression (NVC) at the Ventrolateral Medulla (VLM) in arterial hypertension (HTN) in MRI findings. Background: Cardiovascular and pulmonary afferences are transmitted through the left vagus and glossopharyngeal nerve to the brain stem and vasoactive centers. Evidence supports the association between HTN and NVC at the left VLM. Several independent studies indicate a reduction of HTN after Microvascular Decompression (MVD) of the left. Several independent studies indicate a reduction of HTN after Microvascular Decompression (MVD) of the left VLM. Image processing of MRI provides comprehensible detection of NVC. HTN affects hemodynamic parameters and organs. Objective: This study analyzes and correlates clinical data and MRI findings in patients with and without NVC at the VLM in treatment resistant HTN to obtain possible selection criteria for neurogenic hypertension. Methods: In 44 patients with treatment resistant HTN, we compared MRI findings of neurovascular imaging to demographic, clinical and lifestyle data, office and 24-hour ambulatory Blood Pressure (BP), and cardiovascular imaging and parameters. Results: Twenty-nine (66%) patients had evidence of NVC at the VLM in MRI. Sixteen patients (36%) had unilateral NVC on the left side, 7 (16%) unilateral right and 6 (14%) bilateral NVC. Fifteen (34%) had no evidence of NVC at the VLM. Patients with left sided NVC were significantly younger, than those without NVC (p=0.034). They showed a statistically significant variance in daytime (p=0.020) and nighttime diastolic BP (p<0.001) as the mean arterial pressure (p=0.020). Other measured parameters did not show significant differences between the two groups. Conclusion: We suggest to examine young adults with treatment resistant HTN for the presence of NVC at VLM, before signs of permanent organ damage appear. Clinical and hemodynamic parameters did not emerge as selection criteria to predict NVC. MVD as a surgical treatment of NVC in HTN is not routine yet as a surgical treatment of NVC in HTN is not routine yet. Detection of NVC by imaging and image processing remains the only criteria to suggest MVD, which should be indicated on an individual decision.

Occupational and environmental exposure to heavy metals such as arsenic (As) and lead (Pb) by inducing oxidative damage may impair male fertility. However, there is a new view that shows that the nano form of vitamins such as vitamin C, which have antioxidant activity, can be effective in improving this disorder. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of NVC (NVC) on reproductive toxicity caused by the combination of Pb and As on testicular histology, sperm morphology, oxidative stress parameters, and hormonal changes in male rats. In this experimental study, forty-two male Wistar rats were randomly divided into six groups: control, NVC (200 mg/kg), As (50 ppm sodium arsenate), Pb (500 ppm Pb acetate), As + NVC, and Pb + NVC. FSH, LH, and testosterone levels were measured in serum. The activity of glutathione peroxidase (GPx), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), carbonyl protein, malondialdehyde (MDA), and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) was measured in testis. Histological examination and sperm parameters were also evaluated. FSH, LH, and testosterone levels and sperm parameters significantly decreased, and levels of protein carbonyl, MDA, and DNA fragmentation increased in the As and Pb groups, while treatment with NVC could improve them. Histological evaluation and sperm parameters in As and Pb groups showed damage in the process of spermatogenesis and sperm parameters. The treatment with NVC could significantly improve these parameters. The activity of GPx, SOD, and CAT in testis decreased in As and Pb groups, while treatment with NVC could enhance them. It can be concluded that NVC by inhibiting oxidative damage and improving serum level of testosterone, LH, and FSH could overcome As- and Pb-induced reproductive dysfunction.

The aim of this study was to explore the predictive role of pretreatment MRI-based radiomics on early response of neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) in locoregionally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) patients. Between January 2016 and December 2016, a total of 108 newly diagnosed NPC patients who were hospitalized in the Cancer Hospital of the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences were reviewed. All patients had complete data of enhanced MR of nasopharynx before treatment, and then received two to three cycles of TP-based NAC. After 2 cycles of NAC, enhanced MR of nasopharynx was conducted again. Compared with the enhanced MR images before treatment, the response after NAC was evaluated. According to the evaluation criteria of RECIST1.1, 108 cases were divided into two groups: 52 cases for the NAC-sensitive group and 56 cases for the NAC-resistance group. ITK-SNAP software was used to manually sketch and segment the region of interest (ROI) of nasopharyngeal tumor on the MR enhanced T1WI sequence image. The parameters were analyzed and extracted by using AI Kit software. ANOVA/MW test, correlation analysis, and LASSO were used to select texture features. We used multivariate logistic regressions to select texture features and establish a predictive model. The ROC curve was used to evaluate the efficiency of the predictive model. A total of 396 texture features were obtained by using feature calculation. After all features were screened, we selected two features including ClusterShade_angle135_offset4 and Correlation_AllDirection_offshe1_SD. Based on these two features, we established a predictive model by using multivariate logistic regression. The AUC of the two features used alone (0.804, 95% CI=0.6020.932; 0.762, 95% CI=0.5560.905) was smaller than the combination of these two features (0.905, 95% CI=0.7240.984, p=0.0005). Moreover, the sensitivity values of the two features used alone and the combined use were 92.9%, 51.7%, and 85.7%, respectively, while the specificity values were 66.7%, 91.7%, and 83.3%, respectively, in the early response of NAC for NPC. The predictive model based on MRI-enhanced sequence imaging could distinguish the sensitivity and resistance to NAC and provide new biomarkers for the early prediction of the curative effect in NPC patients.

The existing sampling plans which use the coefficient of variation (CV) are designed under classical statistics. These available sampling plans cannot be used for sentencing if the sample or the population has indeterminate, imprecise, unknown, incomplete or uncertain data. In this paper, we introduce the neutrosophic coefficient of variation (NCV) first. We design a sampling plan based on the NCV. The neutrosophic operating characteristic (NOC) function is then given and used to determine the neutrosophic plan parameters under some constraints. The neutrosophic plan parameters such as neutrosophic sample size and neutrosophic acceptance number are determined through the neutrosophic optimization solution. We compare the efficiency of the proposed plan under the neutrosophic statistical interval method with the sampling plan under classical statistics. A real example which has indeterminate data is given to illustrate the proposed plan.

The current lack of literature on the safe use of low-voltage measuring circuits in coal mines leads to the fact that they are trying to make unreasonable demands or simply prohibit their use under any far-fetched pretext. At the same time, measuring low-voltage circuits are an important integral component of diagnostics and information content of mining equipment control systems. This is due to the fact that the theory and models of the ignition of a methane-air mine atmosphere (MMA) solve problems in a narrow setting and cannot be used in the general mine case. The article identifies the conditions and parameters for the ignition of the MMA from the low-voltage measuring circuit (NVC),developed criteria for the ignition of the form the NVC, the existing model of the possible ignition process of the MMA from the NVTs is finalized. Currently, there are two theories of ignition of the HCV: thermal and ionic. From the author's point of view, the thermal model of VSH ignition from the electric discharge of the NSC is based on the analysis of the propagation of the temperature wave from some heat source in an inert environment. The thermal ignition model of VHS does not take into account many details of the physics of the combustion mechanism, such as the chain nature of individual acts of chemical interaction, the activation energy of molecules in the formation of active centers, and it is based on postulating some electric discharge. An assessment of the intrinsic safety and the possibility of self-expansion of the NVC flame core has been carried out. The approbation of research at three foreign conferences and the interest of foreign colleagues in them are shown. The article contains links to the state budget topics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and the numbers of state registration of Ukraine.

Under the background of 18F-FDG-PET/CT multimodal whole-body imaging for lung tumor diagnosis, for the problems of network degradation and high dimension features during convolutional neural network (CNN) training, beginning with the perspective of dividing sample space, an E-ResNet-NRC (ensemble ResNet nonnegative representation classifier) model is proposed in this paper. The model includes the following steps: (1) Parameters of a pretrained ResNet model are initialized using transfer learning. (2) Samples are divided into three different sample spaces (CT, PET, and PET/CT) based on the differences in multimodal medical images PET/CT, and ROI of the lesion was extracted. (3) The ResNet neural network was used to extract ROI features and obtain feature vectors. (4) Individual classifier ResNet-NRC was constructed with nonnegative representation NRC at a fully connected layer. (5) Ensemble classifier E-ResNet-NRC was constructed using the “relative majority voting method.” Finally, two network models, AlexNet and ResNet-50, and three classification algorithms, nearest neighbor classification algorithm (NNC), softmax, and nonnegative representation classification algorithm (NRC), were combined to compare with the E-ResNet-NRC model in this paper. The experimental results show that the overall classification performance of the Ensemble E-ResNet-NRC model is better than the individual ResNet-NRC, and specificity and sensitivity are more higher; the E-ResNet-NRC has better robustness and generalization ability.

Globular clusters in the Galactic bulge form a flattened system, extending from the Galactic center to about 4.5 kpc from the Sun (Barbuy et al. 1997). A study of abundance ratios in these clusters is very important for a more complete understanding of the bulge formation. In this work we present a spectroscopic analysis of individual stars in NGC 6553. This cluster is a key one because it is located at d⊙ ≍ 5.1 kpc, therefore relatively close to us, and at the same time it is representative of the Galactic bulge stellar population: (a) Ortolani et al. (1995) showed that NGC 6553 and NGC 6528 show very similar Colour-Magnitude Diagrams (CMDs), and NGC 6528 is located at d⊙ ≍ 7.83 kpc, very close to the Galactic center; (b) the stellar populations of the Baade Window is also very similar to that of NGC 6553 and NGC 6528 as Ortolani et al. (1995) have shown by comparing their luminosity functions.

Edema, i.e., fluid accumulation in the interstitial space, accompanies numerous pathological states of the human organism, including heart failure (HF), inflammatory response, and lymphedema. Nevertheless, techniques for quantitative assessment of the edema’s severity and dynamics are absent in clinical practice, and the analysis is mainly limited to physical examination. This fact stimulates the development of novel methods for fast and reliable diagnostics of fluid retention in tissues. In this work, we focused on the possibilities of two microscopic techniques, nailfold video capillaroscopy (NVC) and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), in the assessment of the short-term and long-term cutaneous edema. We showed that for the patients with HF, morphological parameters obtained by NVC—namely, the apical diameter of capillaries and the size of the perivascular zone—indicate long-term edema. On the other hand, for healthy volunteers, the application of two models of short-term edema, venous occlusion, and histamine treatment of the skin, did not reveal notable changes in the capillary parameters. However, a significant reduction of the NVC image sharpness was observed in this case, which was suggested to be due to water accumulation in the epidermis. To verify these findings, we made use of CLSM, which provides the skin structure with cellular resolution. It was observed that for the histamine-treated skin, the areas of the dermal papillae become hyporefractive, leading to the loss of contrast and the lower visibility of capillaries. Similar effect was observed for patients undergoing infusion therapy. Collectively, our results reveal the parameters can be used for pericapillary edema assessment using the NVC and CLSM, and paves the way for their application in a clinical set-up.

Concern about soil physical quality has grown in recent years, particularly in view of serious problems caused by intensive soil use. We hypothesised that improper soil management in irrigated areas damages the structure of sensitive soils in some regions in North-eastern Brazil. The aim of the study was to evaluate the physical quality of irrigated soils planted with annual and perennial crops, compared with soils under natural vegetation in Ceará State, Brazil. Measurements were made of least limiting water range (LLWR), the S index, and relative density. Undisturbed soil samples were collected at two depths (5–10 and 20–25 cm) in four cultivated areas (banana, guava, pasture, and maize/bean in succession) and two natural vegetation areas (NV1, NV2) adjacent to the cultivated areas. All sites were in the Jaguaribe-Apodi Irrigated District, Limoeiro do Norte, Ceará, Brazil. The LLWR was determined using the water retention curve, soil resistance to penetration, and soil bulk density, which are parameters needed to obtain the upper and lower limits of LLWR. The S index was obtained from the water retention curve. The relative density was obtained from the relationship between bulk density and maximum density obtained from the Proctor test. The S index varied as a function of soil management. The variation in LLWR differed between the studied areas as a function of soil bulk density. The relative densities for NV1 and NV2 were lower than for cultivated areas, showing that intensive soil use has caused compaction. The studied parameters seem to be good indicators of soil physical quality, and it was noticed that soils under cultivation suffer an alteration of their structure relative to soils under natural vegetation.

ObjectiveInvestigation of the reliability of the qualitative and semiquantitative scoring of nailfold videocapillaroscopy (NVC) assessment between two raters in a systemic sclerosis (SSc) cohort.MethodsTwo raters from different centres blindly assessed the NVC images of 71 consecutive patients with SSc qualitatively as belonging to the scleroderma spectrum (SDS) category (‘early’, ‘active’, ‘late’ scleroderma pattern or ‘scleroderma-like’ pattern) or to the ‘normal’ category and semiquantitatively by calculating the mean score for capillary loss, giant capillaries, microhaemorrhages and capillary ramifications. Inter-rater/intrarater agreement was assessed by calculation of the proportion of agreement and by κ coefficients. Rater agreement of mean score values of hallmark parameters was assessed by intraclass correlation coefficients.ResultsThe inter-rater/intrarater proportion of agreement to qualitatively assess an image as belonging to the SDS category or not was 90% and 96%, whereas the agreement to distinguish between only ‘early’, ‘active’ and ‘late’ scleroderma NVC patterns was 62% and 81%. The agreement of the semiquantitative scoring, as assessed by intraclass correlation coefficient, was 0.96 and 0.95 for capillary loss, 0.84 and 0.95 for giant capillaries, 0.90 and 0.95 for microhaemorrhages and 0.64 and 0.95 for capillary ramifications.ConclusionsThis is the first study to demonstrate reliability of the qualitative and semiquantitative NVC assessment in an SSc cohort between raters at different centres. Reliability of NVC assessment is essential for use of this tool in multicentre SSc trials.

Background:Microvascular damage is a frequent feature in connective tissue diseases (CTDs) and can be easily detected trough nailfold videocapillaroscopy (NVC) (1,2). Mixed and Undifferentiated connective tissue diseases (MCTD and UCTD) do not show a specific and unique NVC pattern (3). However, a variety of microvascular abnormalities can occur in these two CTDs, both non-specific or specific for the scleroderma like-pattern (3-5).Objectives:To retrospectively assess and compare nailfold microangiopathy observed by NVC in MCTD and stable UCTD versus primary Raynaud’s phenomenon (PRP) (6). In addition, the aim was to correlate NVC findings with serum levels of autoantibodies (Abs) against extractable nuclear antigen (ENA) detected in UCTD.Methods:Files of fourty-six MCTD patients (Kasukawa’s criteria) (mean age 42.8±16 SD years), fourty-seven UCTD patients (mean age 47.7±16.1 SD years), fifty-one PRP (mean age 45.9±17.3 SD years) were retrospectively evaluated in the study. Among UCTD and MCTD patients 95% of both showed Raynaud’s phenomenon. Main NVC parameters (i.e. dilated capillaries, giant capillaries, microhemorrhages, abnormal shapes and number of capillaries) and related semiquantitative scale (score 0–3 for every parameter), were analyzed and compared between the two distinct CTD groups and PRP. Furthermore, ENA Abs (in particular, Ro/SSA, La/SSB, Scl70 and Jo1) were evaluated. The CTD patients were receiving different immunosuppressive treatments. Statistical analysis was performed by non-parametric tests.Results:Among UCTD group, 36% of patients showed a normal NVC pattern, 53% had non-specific NVC abnormalities and 11% had a scleroderma like-pattern. The latter was significantly more frequent in MCTD than in UCTD (p<0.001), in fact 22 out of 46 (48%) MCTD patients presented a scleroderma-like pattern. On the other hand, normal pattern or non-specific NVC abnormalities were respectively found in 9% and 43% MCTD patients. Therefore, CTD patients showing giant capillaries, abnormal shapes (i.e. angiogenesis) and lower capillary density were significantly more affected by MCTD than UCTD (p<0.001). Finally, the absolute number of capillaries was found significantly lower in MCTD versus UCTD patients (mean 7±1.7 SD vs mean 9.2±1 SD, respectively, p<0.001). Not any statistical correlation was observed between NVC parameters and specific Abs ENA in UCTD. PRP showed a normal NVC pattern in 2% and non-specific capillary abnormalities in 98%, (including dilated capillaries and microhemorrhages).Conclusion:NVC features in UCTD patients seem very close to the pattern observed in PRP (mostly non-specific capillary abnormalities), conversely in MCTD the scleroderma-like pattern was found significantly prevalent together with a significant capillary number reduction. Object The aim of this study was to prospectively evaluate atrophic changes in trigeminal nerves (TGNs) using measurements of volume (V) and cross-sectional area (CSA) from high-resolution 3-T MR images obtained in patients with unilateral trigeminal neuralgia (TN), and to correlate these data with patient and neurovascular compression (NVC) characteristics and with clinical outcomes. Methods Anatomical TGN parameters (V and CSA) were obtained in 50 patients (30 women and 20 men; mean age 56.42 years, range 22–79 years) with classic TN before treatment with microvascular decompression (MVD). Parameters were compared between the symptomatic (ipsilateralTN) and asymptomatic (contralateralTN) sides of the face. Twenty normal control subjects were also included. Two independent observers blinded to the side of pain separately analyzed the images. Measurements of V (from the pons to the entrance of the nerve into Meckel's cave) and CSA (at 5 mm from the entry of the TGN into the pons) for each TGN were performed using imaging software and axial and coronal projections, respectively. These data were correlated with patient characteristics (age, duration of symptoms before MVD, side of pain, sex, and area of pain distribution), NVC characteristics (type of vessel involved in NVC, location of compression along the nerve, site of compression around the circumference of the root, and degree of compression), and clinical outcomes at the 2-year follow-up after surgery. Comparisons were made using Bonferroni's test. Interobserver variability was assessed using the Pearson correlation coefficient. Results The mean V of the TGN on the ipsilateralTN (60.35 ± 21.74 mm3) was significantly smaller (p < 0.05) than those for the contralateralTN and controls (78.62 ± 24.62 mm3 and 89.09 ± 14.72 mm3, respectively). The mean CSA of the TGN on the ipsilateralTN (4.17 ± 1.74 mm2) was significantly smaller than those for the contralateralTN and controls (5.41 ± 1.89 mm2 and 5.64 ± 0.85 mm2, respectively). The ipsilateralTN with NVC Grade III (marked indentation) had a significantly smaller mean V than the ipsilateralTN with NVC Grade I (mere contact), although it was not significantly smaller than that of the ipsilateralTN with NVC Grade II (displacement or distortion of root). The ipsilateralTN with NVC Grade III had a significantly smaller mean CSA than the ipsilateralTN with NVC Grades I and II (p < 0.05). The TGN on the ipsilateralTN in cured patients had a smaller mean CSA than that on the ipsilateralTN of patients with partial pain relief or treatment failure (p < 0.05). The same finding was almost found in relation to measurements of V, but the p value was slightly higher at 0.05. Conclusions Results showed that TGN atrophy in patients with TN can be demonstrated by high-resolution imaging. These data suggest that atrophic changes in TGNs, which significantly correlated with the severity of compression and clinical outcomes, may help to predict long-term prognosis after vascular decompression.

AbstractVLBI provides the only direct imaging technique currently available that is able to resolve even the outer parts of accretion disks. Recent observations of water masers in NGC 4258 and of free-free absorption of counterjet radiation in NGC 1275 are the best examples of where VLBI has provided important data on the parameters of disks. Other observations are now being made of similar sources. In addition, recent VLBI observations of HI absorption promise to add yet more constraints on the outer disk regions.

AbstractWhen we use optical isochrone-fitting solutions from the literature to 2mass CMDs, they are often not the best solutions in the infrared domain. We analysed 10 open clusters with 2mass, nine of them previously studied with optical photometry (NGC 1245, NGC 1342, NGC 1502, NGC 2104, NGC 2204, NGC 2243, NGC 2281, NGC 6709 and NGC 744) and one using integrated spectroscopy (BH 132). The study involved the classical (by eye) and a semi-automated method of isochrone fitting. We used the solutions of the first method as input for the second, looking for refined solutions. The semi-automated method uses a synthetic color–magnitude diagram (CMD), based on different Padova isochrones, to compare with the observed CMDs by means of likelihood statistics. The derived astrophysical parameters are age, distance and reddening values. The present results show better fits than those implied by the optical values. We also show that the semi-automated method decreases the parameter uncertainties.

Background:Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is an autoimmune condition characterized by arterial and/or venous thrombosis and/or obstetric morbidity, associated with the presence in the serum of antiphospholipid antibodies (aPL) [1]. Subjects with confirmed positivity of aPL in absence of thrombotic/obstetric manifestations are identified as aPL carriers [2] The microangiopathy detected by nailfold videocapillaroscopy (NVC) in APS and in aPL-carrier patients is poorly investigated, as well as the possible interference of anticoagulant drugs [3].Objectives:To compare microvascular damage in APS, aPL carriers and a group of patients (CTR) without aPL positivity and on regular warfarin therapy for cardiovascular indicationsMethods:NVC investigations were performed as part of standard procedures in APS patients (18, mean age 50.0±12.8 years), aPL carriers (24, mean age 46.4±16.4 years) and CTR without aPL (18, mean age 74±12.5 years) in therapy with oral anticoagulant (warfarin) for non-immunological vascular complications (atrial fibrillation, mechanical heart valve, deep venous thrombosis). Only patients affected by primary APS form were selected from data files (2006 Sapporo classification criteria). The following NVC parameters were availble: dilated capillaries, giant capillaries, microhemorrhages (with particular attention to linear and thin hemosiderin deposits, arranged perpendicularly and parallel to the nailfold bed, “comb-like”), abnormal shape (i.e. brunched “bushy” capillaries) and capillary number reduction. Those parameters were scored according to a semi-quantitative scale [4,5]. Statistical analysis was performed by non-parametric tests. Any p values equal or lower than 0.05 was considered statistically significant.Results:APS patients showed a higher score for dilated capillaries (p=0.001), more frequent microhemorrhages (p=0.03), in particular “comb-like” microhemorrhages (p=0.007) than simply aPL carriers. Of note, there wasn’t a statistically significant difference in the number of microhemorrhages between APS and CTR group (p=0.23), but again the number of “comb-like” hemorrhages, was almost absent in the CTR group (p=0.03). No significant correlation was found between the different aPL subtypes and the NVC parameters.Conclusion:APS patients showed significantly higher number of non-specific NVC abnormalities than aPL carriers. Anticoagulant treatment could represent a further risk factor for the appearance of microhemorrhages in all the patients, being the NVC “comb-like“ pattern mainly associated with the APS. 1. To investigate the structure of the primate burst generator for vertical saccades, we obtained intra-axonal records from vertical medium-lead burst neurons with upward on-directions (UMLBs) in alert, behaving squirrel monkeys, while monitoring their spontaneous eye movements. After physiological characterization, these UMLBs were injected with horseradish peroxidase. 2. UMLBs (n = 14) had no spontaneous activity and emitted bursts of action potentials that preceded rapid eye movements by approximately 6 ms. Parameters of the burst (duration and number of spikes) were highly correlated with parameters of the rapid eye movement (duration and amplitude of the upward displacement of the eyes). 3. The axons of six UMLBs projected to the oculomotor complex. Their somata (4 were recovered) were all in the rostral interstitial nucleus of the medial longitudinal fasciculus (riMLF). Their axons traveled caudally in the medial longitudinal fasciculus (MLF) and ramified in the interstitial nucleus of Cajal (NIC) before entering the oculomotor nucleus. Five axons terminated bilaterally in the subdivisions innervating the superior rectus and inferior oblique muscles and therefore were presumed to be excitatory. One axon terminated in the ipsilateral inferior rectus and superior oblique subdivisions of the oculomotor complex and was presumed to be inhibitory. 4. Additionally, our data demonstrate that the nucleus of the posterior commissure (nPC) may also contain UMLBs. The axon of one such neuron crossed the midline within the posterior commissure and provided terminal fields to the contralateral nPC, riMLF, NIC, and the mesencephalic reticular formation but not to the oculomotor complex. 5. In conclusion, our data demonstrate that the rostral mesencephalon of the monkey contains neurons that have both the activity and the connections that are necessary either to provide motoneurons innervating extraocular muscles of both eyes with the pulse of activity they display during upward saccades or to inhibit their antagonists. Furthermore, our data demonstrate that some UMLBs are better suited for closing the feedback path of the local feedback loop rather than for providing direct input to extraocular motoneurons.

Purpose: The aim of the study was the assessment of the influence of MLS laser therapy on morphological changes in nailfold videocapillaroscopy (NVC), clinical features, and the serum NO level in patients with primary and secondary Raynaud’s phenomenon (RP). Materials and methods: The analysis was performed on a group of 78 patients with RP and 30 healthy volunteers, who underwent NVC examination. NO concentration was assayed using the Griess method in blood serum before and after 3-weeks of laser biostimulation. MLS wasperformed with a Laser-M6 ASA Company device,for 3 weeks with weekend breaks, using thefollowing parameters: a frequency of 1500 Hz, adose of 25 J/cm2, and a time of 2.5 minutes on onehand. Results: After 3 weeks of MLS laser therapy, thebeneficial clinical effects manifested by a decrease of duration and number of RP attacks and degree of pain score on the visual analogue scale (VAS) in patients with primary and secondary RP. Clinical improvement after MLS laser therapy was reflected in the assessment of microcirculation disorders in NVC examination. Moreover, the tendency of normalization of NO concentration in the serum of patients with primary and secondary RP may suggest a favorable effect of laser biostimulation on the regulation of processes taking part in microcirculation disorders. Conclusions: The results showed that NVC is a useful diagnostic tool in the evaluation of dynamic microvascular involvement in RP patients. MLS laser therapy has a beneficial effect in patients with primary and secondary Raynaud’s phenomenon

The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between the qualitative abnormalities on nailfold videocapillaroscopy (NVC), and the concentrations of selected biomarkers (sE-selectin, endothelin-1, high-sensitivity c-reactive protein (hsCRP)) and lipid metabolism parameters in children and adolescents with Raynaud’s phenomenon (RP). Raynaud’s phenomenon, to assess whether nailfold capillary changes may reflect the degree of systemic blood vessel abnormalities. The study group included 66 patients (34 undifferentiated—uRP and 32 secondary—sRP) aged 6–19 years and the control group. In both groups, NVC was performed and the selected biomarkers were measured (sE-selectin, endothelin-1, hsCRP) and lipid profile. Endothelin-1, sE-selectin and hsCRP concentrations in patients from both RP groups were significantly higher; concentration of HDL fraction was significantly lower compared with the control group. The analysis of multiple linear regression demonstrated that megacapillaries most strongly determine the sE-selectin value (p = 0.04) and hsCRP (p = 0.03). Both the total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) fraction concentrations were determined by the presence of avascular areas (p = 0.02). In conclusion, specific pathologic NVC changes were associated with higher endothelial damage biomarkers concentration and adverse changes in the lipid profile.

Since late 2019 many people all over the world have become infected and have died due to coronavirus. There have been many general studies about the spread of the virus. In this study, new and accumulated confirmed cases (NCC and ACC), new and accumulated recovered cases (NRC and ARC), and new and accumulated deaths (ND and AD) were evaluated by geographical properties, meteorological parameters and air particulate matters between 3 April 2020 and 11 June 2020 within 15 provinces in Iran. Meteorological parameters, air particulate matters and COVID-19 data were collected from Iran Meteorological Organization, the Environmental Protection Agency and Aftabnews website, respectively. The results of the study show that provinces in dry lands (i.e., Kerman and South Khorasan) not only had low admission of NCC, ACC, ARC and AD but also presented lower rates of NCC, ACC and AD per 105 population. Air temperature showed positive and significant correlation with the number of COVID-19 cases. This is because of hot outdoor air especially in costal and equatorial regions that forces people to stay in closed environments with no ventilation and with closed-cycle air conditioners. Maximum air pressure was found to be the most frequent (66%) and significant parameter correlating with health outcomes associated with COVID-19. The most engaged province in this study was Khuzestan, while provinces in dry lands (i.e., Kerman and South Khorasan) showed low number of health endpoints associated with COVID-19. The highest rate of accumulated and new recovered cases per 105 population were also found in Khuzestan and Kerman provinces. North Khorasan also showed the worst rate of N&ARC/105 population. Therefore, air temperature, dry lands and population were the most important factors for the control of coronavirus spread.

Background and Aims. Due to the difficulty in clinical staging, a simple and feasible perioperative assessment approach for guiding personalized neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) is lacking. We investigated the clinical value of NAC in advanced gastric carcinoma (GC) and the concordance between perioperative imaging and postoperative pathological assessments. Methods. This study included 62 patients with advanced GC who received NAC between January 2012 and December 2018. The preoperative and postoperative T stages, postoperative pathological tumor regression grade (TRG), and changes in computed tomography (CT) values after NAC were assessed. Follow-ups were conducted to obtain the median survival time (MST), and Kaplan–Meier survival curves were plotted. Results. The T stages significantly differed between before and after NAC ( p = 0.001 ). The MST of patients in the TRG0 group was significantly different from that of patients in the TRG1+2 and TRG3 groups ( p = 0.223 ). The percentages of positive lymph nodes were 0%, 24.17%, and 27.64% in the TRG0, TRG1+2, and TRG3 groups, respectively. TRG was correlated with changes in CT values before and after NAC, and the extent of change was associated with patient prognosis. Conclusions. Perioperative imaging can be used to assess the short-term effectiveness of NAC for patients with GC.

OBJECTIVEOffending vessels at the site of neurovascular contact (NVC) in patients with trigeminal neuralgia (TN) and hemifacial spasm (HFS) may have specific hemodynamic features. The purpose of this study was to investigate the wall shear stress (WSS) of offending vessels at NVCs by conducting a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis.METHODSThe authors retrospectively analyzed the cases of 20 patients (10 with TN and 10 with HFS) evaluated by 3D CT angiography and used the imaging findings for analysis of the hemodynamic parameters. The 3D CFD images were directly compared with the NVCs determined by simulated multifusion images of CT angiogram and MR cisternogram, and operative photos. The magnitudes of the WSS (WSSm) at the proximal (WSSm-p), just-beginning (WSSm-j), contact site (WSSm-s), and distal (WSSm-d) areas of each NVC were analyzed. The ratios of the WSSm-j, WSSm-s, and WSSm-d areas to the WSSm-p area were calculated individually. The direction of the WSS (WSSv) and its temporal variation (WSSvV) were depicted and morphologically compared with the NVC confirmed by simulated images and operative findings.RESULTSThe ratios of WSSm at the just-beginning and the contact site to the proximal area of the NVCs (WSSm-j/WSSm-p and WSSm-s/WSSm-p) were both significantly higher than that at the distal area (WSSm-d/WSSm-p) (p < 0.05). The WSSv and WSSvV at the NVCs showed small variation in a single cardiac cycle, especially along the areas that were in contact with the affected nerve.CONCLUSIONSAreas of relatively high WSSm and temporal variation of WSSm (WSSmV) were observed at the NVCs. Less mobility of the WSSv and WSSvV was detected along the side of the vessels in contact with the nerves. These findings may be consistent with the actual area of the NVC. Hemodynamic features of the site of NVC can be added to the preoperative simulation for MVD surgery, which may be useful for the diagnosis and treatment planning of TN and HFS.

Background:Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is one of the main manifestations of vascular involvement in systemic sclerosis (SSc). The association of PAH with Raynaud’s phenomenon (RP) and digital ischemic disorders is assumed.Objectives:The aim of the study to detect of the possible relationship of pathogenetically similar processes and the predictor role in the early diagnosis of PAH and digital ischemic disorders by the nailfold videocapillaroscopy (NVC).Methods:111 patients with SSc (51 patients with PAH (SSc-PAH) and 60 patients without PAH) include in this study. In all patients, the diagnosis of SSc was validated according to the 2013 ACR-EULAR criteria. PAH was diagnosed by right heart catheterization. NVC was performed in all recruited subjects. Capillary quantitative parameters (loops length and width, capillary density, neoangiogenesis) were evaluated and a semi-quantitative scoring was used (specific patterns - early, active and late) to define microvascular alterations. The test evaluated the presence of capillaroscopic changes in the nailfold bed on 2-5 fingers of both hands. The normal capillaroscopic pattern was characterized by the presence of 7-11 capillaries in the form of hairpins per 1 mm. Pathological patterns were characterized by morphological and structural changes, such as expanded and giant capillaries, hemorrhages, avascular fields, neoangiogenesis. The capillaroscopy pattern (normal, non-specific, early/active/late) was determined qualitatively. Decreased capillary density, dilated, giant or branched capillaries, microhemorrhages were evaluated semi-quantitatively.Results:RP was detected in 100% of cases in both groups. In the analysis of capillaroscopic patterns in both groups, the early and late scleroderma types of changes prevailed, but no significant differences were noted. Typical scleroderma patterns were found in 51 patients (100%) with SSc-PAH. In 3 patient with SSc without PAH, the abnormalities were regarded as non-specific. The NVC pattern was detected to be early in 8 patients with SSc-PAH and in 11 with SSc without PAH. The NVC pattern was found to be active in 16 patients with SSc-PAH and in 18 with SSc without PAH. The NVC pattern was detected to be late in 27 patients with SSc-PAH and in 28 with SSc without PAH. In addition to RP, the development of digital ulcers was noted with equal frequency in history (25 patients with SSc-PAH and 32 with SSc without PAH). Also, the time to their appearance from the first symptom of SSc was the same (56 (16; 84) months and 44 (23; 72) months, respectively). Severe forms of digital ischemic disorders were observed rarely and with the same frequency in the studied groups. Ischemia in 2 patients with SSc-PAH and in 5 patients with SSc without PAH, gangrene in 2 patients only in the SSc group without PAH, amputation in 1 of each group.Conclusion:In the course of the study, it was not possible to identify differences between the NVC patterns, the frequency and severity of digital ischemic disorders in the compared groups. That fact does not allow using the NVC as an early diagnosis of PAH in SSc. Based on the mathematical model of the mass moment aerospace vehicles (MMAV), a coupled nonlinear dynamical system is established by rational simplification. The flight control system of MMAV is designed via utilizing nonlinear predictive control (NPC) approach. Aiming at the parameters of NPC is generally used the trial-and-error method to optimize and design, a novel kind of NPC parameters optimization strategy based on ant colony genetic algorithm (ACGA) is proposed in this paper. The method for setting NPC parameters with ACA in which the routes of ants are optimized by the genetic algorithm (GA) is derived. And then, a detailed realized process of this method is also presented. Furthermore, this optimization algorithm of the NPC parameters is applied to the flight control system of MMAV. The simulation results show that the system not only meets the demands of time-response specifications but also has excellent robustness.

Background: Prediabetes is determined on the bases of glycemic parameters, which are above normal but below diabetic thresholds. Prediabetes is associated with the presence of insulin resistance and β-cells dysfunction. N-acetyl cysteine (NAC), as a safe and inexpensive medication, is commercially accessible since long-time ago. This drug is not found in natural sources, although cysteine is present in some meals like chicken and turkey meats, garlic, yogurt, and eggs. NAC prevents apoptosis and oxygen related genotoxicity in endothelial cells by increasing intracellular levels of glutathione and decreasing mitochondrial membrane depolarization reaction. Objective: To evaluate the effects of NAC administration on glucose homeostasis parameters in prediabetic patients. Methods: This study included, 25 patients treated with dietary control and life style modifications for 12 weeks, 25 patients treated with NAC (600 mg) oral tablets twice daily plus dietary control and life style modifications for 12 weeks. Other 20 in addition to 50 patients to have an idea about the normal values of study parameters and in order to assess how much the drug used in the study were able to normalize the abnormal parameters. Results: NAC demonstrated a significant decrease in the fasting blood sugar, HbA1c, fasting Insulin and insulin resistance at the end of 12 weeks (P<0.05) compared with baseline measurements. Conclusion: The results of the study showed that N-acetyl cysteine has an effective effect on glycemic control. ABSTRACT We use direct N-body simulations to explore some possible scenarios for the future evolution of two massive clusters observed towards the centre of NGC 4654, a spiral galaxy with mass similar to that of the Milky Way. Using archival HST data, we obtain the photometric masses of the two clusters, M = 3 × 105 M⊙ and M = 1.7 × 106 M⊙, their half-light radii, Reff ∼ 4 pc and Reff ∼ 6 pc, and their projected distances from the photometric centre of the galaxy (both &lt;22 pc). The knowledge of the structure and separation of these two clusters (∼24 pc) provides a unique view for studying the dynamics of a galactic central zone hosting massive clusters. Varying some of the unknown cluster orbital parameters, we carry out several N-body simulations showing that the future evolution of these clusters will inevitably result in their merger. We find that, mainly depending on the shape of their relative orbit, they will merge into the galactic centre in less than 82 Myr. In addition to the tidal interaction, a proper consideration of the dynamical friction braking would shorten the merging times up to few Myr. We also investigate the possibility to form a massive nuclear star cluster (NSC) in the centre of the galaxy by this process. Our analysis suggests that for low-eccentricity orbits, and relatively long merger times, the final merged cluster is spherical in shape, with an effective radius of few parsecs and a mass within the effective radius of the order of $10^5\, \mathrm{M_{\odot }}$. Because the central density of such a cluster is higher than that of the host galaxy, it is likely that this merger remnant could be the likely embryo of a future NSC.

Background:Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a complex autoimmune connective tissue disease, characterized by autoimmune inflammatory microvascular damage with progressive loss of capillaries, fibrosis and ischemia of skin and internal organs. (1) Nailfold videocapillaroscopy (NVC) is a safe toll for early diagnosis of SSc, it identify morphological changes of vessel that are predictive for clinical disease progression and organ involvement.(2) About clinical complication the loss of bone mass and body composition abnormalities, particularly muscle mass and strength loss (sarcopenia), are recognized in advanced disease.(3)Objectives:To evaluated in SSc patients, the body composition and the bone status according to the microvascular condition, assessed and scored by nailfold videocapillaroscopy (NVC, “Early”,”Active”,”Late” patterns).Methods:Body composition and bone mineral density (BMD) were assessed by DEXA in 35 female SSc patients classified according to the 2013 EULAR/ACR criteria and 32 sex-matched healthy subjects. Clinical, laboratory, body composition and bone parameters were analysed according to the different NVC patterns. Means were compared by the Student’s t test or one way analysis of variance; medians were compared by the Kruskall Wallis test; and frequencies by the chi square test.Results:Higher prevalence of vertebral (26.4%vs 9.3%) and femoral (32.3% vs 9.3%) osteoporosis (OP) was found in SSc. Particularly SSc patients with “Late” NVC pattern showed a significantly higher prevalence of vertebral (p=0.018) and femoral OP (p=0.016). Regional assessment of bone mass (BM) in 7 different body areas showed a significant lower BMD only at the total spine (P=0.008) and femoral neck (p=0.027) in advanced microvascular damage. Patients with “Late” NVC pattern showed lower whole body lean mass (LM) compared to “Early” and “Active” NVC patterns, particularly at upper limbs. To note, in all body sites, BMD correlate with LM and BMC according to NVC pattern severity.Conclusion:SSc patients with most severe microvascular damage show a significantly altered body composition and bone status suggesting a strong link between microvascular failure and associated muscle/bone sufference.References:[1]Cutolo M et al. Background: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common disease that affects up to 10% of women of reproductive age, in which hyperandrogenism (HA), enlarged cystic ovaries, and chronic anovulation often co-exist with obesity, dyslipidemia and insulin resistance (IR). There is a need for an alternative to metformin with minimal side effects to improve insulin sensitivity and correct dyslipidemia in PCOS patients.Methods: It was a prospective, Randomized controlled clinical trial. 116 PCOS patients, 58 each in two groups received either Metformin 500 mg TDS or N-acetylcysteine (NAC) 600 mg TDS for 3 months. Clinical and biochemical parameters contributing to metabolic syndrome (MS) and insulin resistance (fasting blood sugar (FBS), fasting insulin (FI), FBS:FI, HOMA-IR and QUICKI) were assessed at the start and end of the study. Results were compared between the two groups.Results: Both treatment modalities resulted in a significant reduction in number of cases with IR (p=0.001) and MS. Fasting hyperinsulinemia improved in 15 % (p=0.12) and 30% (p=0.001) of patients while 12% (p=0.23) and 18% (p=0.049) improvement was seen in FBS:FI in MET and NAC group respectively. Similarly, improvement in HOMA-IR was 12% (p=0.30) and 32% (p=0.001) in MET and NAC group which is significant with NAC. QUICKI and impaired glucose tolerance showed significant improvement in both the groups with a p-value of 0.04 and 0.006, 0.035 and 0.046 respectively. Significant reduction was seen in triglycerides (p=0.048) in NAC group.Conclusions: NAC is equally efficacious as metformin in improving parameters of insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome with minimal occasional side effects ensuring better compliance for a long-term therapy.

Context. The open cluster (OC) NGC 2453 is of particular importance since it has been considered to host the planetary nebula (PN) NGC 2452, however their distances and radial velocities are strongly contested. Aims. In order to obtain a complete picture of the fundamental parameters of the OC NGC 2453, 11 potential members were studied. The results allowed us to resolve the PN NGC 2452 membership debate. Methods. Radial velocities for the 11 stars in NGC 2453 and the PN were measured and matched with Gaia data release 2 (DR2) to estimate the cluster distance. In addition, we used deep multi-band UBVRI photometry to get fundamental parameters of the cluster via isochrone fitting on the most likely cluster members, reducing inaccuracies due to field stars. Results. The distance of the OC NGC 2453 (4.7 ± 0.2 kpc) was obtained with an independent method solving the discrepancy reported in the literature. This result is in good agreement with an isochrone fitting of 40–50 Myr. On the other hand, the radial velocity of NGC 2453 (78 ± 3 km s−1) disagrees with the velocity of NGC 2452 (62 ± 2 km s−1). Our results show that the PN is a foreground object in the line of sight. Conclusions. Due to the discrepancies found in the parameters studied, we conclude that the PN NGC 2452 is not a member of the OC NGC 2453.

ABSTRACT The existing open-cluster membership determination algorithms are either prior dependent on some known parameters of clusters or are not automatable to large samples of clusters. In this paper, we present ml-moc, a new machine-learning-based approach to identify likely members of open clusters using the Gaia DR2 data and no a priori information about cluster parameters. We use the k-nearest neighbour (kNN) algorithm and the Gaussian mixture model (GMM) on high-precision proper motions and parallax measurements from the Gaia DR2 data to determine the membership probabilities of individual sources down to G ∼ 20 mag. To validate the developed method, we apply it to 15 open clusters: M67, NGC 2099, NGC 2141, NGC 2243, NGC 2539, NGC 6253, NGC 6405, NGC 6791, NGC 7044, NGC 7142, NGC 752, Blanco 1, Berkeley 18, IC 4651, and Hyades. These clusters differ in terms of their ages, distances, metallicities, and extinctions and cover a wide parameter space in proper motions and parallaxes with respect to the field population. The extracted members produce clean colour–magnitude diagrams and our astrometric parameters of the clusters are in good agreement with the values derived in previous work. The estimated degree of contamination in the extracted members ranges between 2 ${{\ \rm per\ cent}}$ and 12 ${{\ \rm per\ cent}}$. The results show that ml-moc is a reliable approach to segregate open-cluster members from field stars.

The protection of N-Acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC) was investigated in the streptozocin-induced diabetes model in rat testicular tissues. In vivo biochemical mechanism was determined by measuring antioxidant parameters. The rats were randomly divided into 4 groups such as control, diabetes, diabetes+NAC and NAC. A single dose of intraperitoneal streptozotocin (IP STZ) (60 mg / kg body weight) was given to animals fasted overnight. Before injection and 72 hours after injection, blood glucose levels were measured from the tail vein with a glucometer. The blood glucose levels above 250 mg / dL were considered diabetic. Animals in groups 3 and 4 did not receive any treatment for four weeks after the diabetes model was established. Four weeks later, subjects in Groups 3 and 4 were given an IP injection of NAC (60 mg / kg, prepared in 0.9% NaCl solution daily) for 7 days. At the end of the applications, all animals were sacrificed and tissues were taken for antioxidant measurements. While the malondialdehyde (MDA) level increased in STZ-induced diabetic rat’s testicular tissues, it was brought to the control level with NAC treatment. The glutathione (GSH) and nitric oxide (NOx) level, superoxide dismutaze (SOD) and caalase (CAT) enzyme activities were found significantly reduced in the diabetic group. However, NAC treatment resulted in elevated these parameters.

The acute toxicity study for ZER-NLC was conducted by orally treating BALB/c mice with a single dose with either water, olive oil, ZER, NLC, or ZER-NLC for 14 days. The animals were observed for clinical and behavioral abnormalities, toxicological symptoms, feed consumption, and gross appearance. The liver, kidney, heart, lung, spleen, and brain tissues were assessed histologically. Total haemogram was counted by hemocytometry and microhematocrit reader. Bone marrow examination in terms of cellular morphology was done by Wright staining with bone marrow smear. Furthermore, serum biochemical parameters were determined spectrophotometrically. Grossly all treated mice, their investigated tissues, serum biochemical parameters, total haemogram, and bone marrow were normal. At oral doses of 100 and 200 mg/kg ZER-NLC there was no sign of toxicity or mortality in BALB/c mice. This study suggests that the 50% lethal dose (LD50) of ZER-NLC is higher than 200 mg/kg, thus, safe by oral administration.

Objective. To investigate the expression of miR-338-3p in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) and its relationship with STAT3 mRNA expression as well as their relationship with clinical pathological parameters and prognosis of patients. Methods. From September 2016 to September 2018, 71 patients with NPC were selected as the NPC group, and 71 samples of NPC tissues were collected during the operation. A total of 23 patients who underwent biopsy due to chronic nasopharyngitis were selected as the control group and 23 nasopharyngeal mucosal tissues were collected. The expressions of miR-338-3p and STAT3 mRNA in nasopharyngeal tissue of two groups were detected by real-time quantitative PCR, and the relationship between the two was analyzed. To collect clinical data of NPC patients and analyze the relationship between the expressions of miR-338-3p and STAT3 in NPC tissues and clinical pathological parameters of the patients, we followed up the patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma for three years to observe the relationship between miR-338-3p, STAT3, and the prognosis of the patients. Results. The relative expression levels of miR-338-3p in nasopharyngeal tissues of the NPC group and the control group were 0.39 ± 0.05 and 1.01 ± 0.09, respectively ( P < 0.05). The relative expression levels of STAT3 mRNA in nasopharyngeal tissues of the NPC group and the control group were 3.82 ± 0.21 and 1.04 ± 0.11, respectively ( P > 0.05). miR-338-3p was negatively correlated with the relative expression of STAT3 mRNA in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (r = 0.038, P > 0.05). The expression of miR-338-3p was related to the age of the patient, clinical TNM stage, T stage, and distant metastasis (all P < 0.05). STAT3 expression was correlated with clinical TNM stage, T stage, and distant metastasis in our patient ( P < 0.05). The expressions of miR-338-3p and STAT3 in nasopharyngeal carcinoma tissues from different gender, histological type, N stage, M stage, and degree of differentiation showed no statistical differences ( P > 0.05). The survival rate of the group with low miR-338-3p expression was significantly lower than that of the group with high miR-338-3p expression ( P > 0.05). The survival rate of patients with the high STAT3 expression group was significantly lower than that of patients with the low STAT3 expression group ( P > 0.05). Conclusion. There is a negative correlation between the low expression of miR-338-3p and the high expression of STAT3 in NPC, which are all related to the TNM stage, T stage, and prognosis of the patient.

<span>RTS Game is one of the popular genre in PC gaming, which has been played by various type of players frequently. In RTS game, NPC Defense Building (Tower) has attacking behavior to the closest enemy without considering certain enemy parameters. This causes the NPC Tower to be more predictable by the opponent and easily defeated if NPC attacked by enemies in the group. Thus, this research simulates NPC Tower using Hierarchical Finite State Machine (HFSM) method compared with Finite State Machine (FSM). In this study, NPC Tower detects enemies by seeing at four parameters namely NPC Tower Health, Enemy's Health, Enemy Type, and Tower Distance to enemies. NPC Tower will attack the most dangerous enemy according to the ‘Degree of Danger’ parameter. Then use the decision-making logic of the rule-based system. The output of NPC Tower are three type of behaviors namely Aggressive Attacking, Regular Attacking, and Attack with Special Skill. From the test results of 3 NPC Tower, Kamandaka NPC Tower with HFSM method is winning 8.92% compare to Kamandaka Tower with FSM method. For Gayatri Tower NPC obtained equal results using both HFSM and FSM. Meanwhile, Adikara NPC with HFSM method is 4.62% superior to Adikara Tower with FSM method.</span>

Background:COVID-19 is a multifaceted condition with a wide range of clinical manifestations, including microvascular/endothelial dysfunction, that starts in the early phase of the disease and may become dramatically harmful in the late stage, causing a massive pro-thrombotic state. Nailfold videocapillaroscopy (NVC) is the most used tool to identify microvascular status in a large spectrum of diseases [1]. Recently, non-specific NVC abnormalities have been described in a cohort of COVID-19 patients (no controls used) [2].Objectives:To assess microvascular damage in recovered COVID-19 patients (range of 40-270 days from recovery) by considering the previous severity of the disease, and, as mandatory, the comparison with matched individuals suffering from primary Raynaud’s phenomenon (PRP) and healthy volunteers (HV).Methods:NVC investigations were performed during standard clinical assessments in forty-four recovered COVID-19 patients (mean age 58±14 years, mean days from disease onset 129±54, mean days from disease recovery 106±52), twenty-two patients with PRP (mean age 60±15 years, mean years from disease onset 11±10) and twenty-two HV (mean age 60±14 years). COVID-19 patients were divided into two subgroups, according to the need of oxygen supplementation: twenty-two patients with severe lung involvement (need of Continuous Positive Airways Pressure and/or mechanical ventilation, mean age 57±12 years) vs twenty-two patients with mild-moderate lung involvement (need of Venturi mask or no need of oxygen supplementation, mean age 59±15 years). Clinical and demographic data of all the enrolled subjects were collected, during NVC examination. The following capillaroscopic parameters were evaluated: capillary number, dilated capillaries, giant capillaries, microhemorrhages, angiogenesis, disorganization of the microvascular array. A validated semiquantitative scoring (0-3) was adopted for NVC abnormalities [3-5]. Statistical analysis was carried out by non-parametric tests.Results:After COVID-19 recovery, no statistically significant difference was observed between COVID-19 patients and control groups of subjects concerning the score for the following NVC parameters: dilated capillaries, giant capillaries, disorganization of the microvascular array, angiogenesis. However, the capillary number per linear millimeter was significantly lower in COVID-19 patients (8.3±0.9) than in PRP (8.8±0.7, p=0.05) and HV (9.3±0.6, p<0.0001). Surprisingly, recovered COVID-19 patients showed significantly less microhemorrhages (score 0.4±0.3) than subjects of the other groups (PRP 0.6±0.5, p=0.01; HV 0.6±0.6, p=0.05). In particular, recovered patients who had more severe COVID-19 showed less microhemorrhages than patients with mild/moderate disease (score 0.18±0.4 vs 0.36±0.5), but this didn’t reach the statistical significance (p=0.18). On the other hand, patients recovered from severe SARS-CoV-2 infection also showed higher rate of angiogenesis (0.18±0.4) than patients with mild/moderate disease (no case, p=0.04).Conclusion:COVID-19 doesn’t seem to significantly induce, in short-term, specific alterations in peripheral microvascular array as evaluated by NVC, despite the severity of the disease, except for a significant reduction of the absolute number of nailfold capillaries. AbstractWe review our recent studies of the globular cluster system of NGC 5128. First, we have obtained low-resolution, high signal-to-noise spectroscopy of 72 globular clusters using Gemini-S/GMOS to obtain the ages, metallicities, and the level of alpha enrichment of the metal-poor and metal-rich globular cluster subpopulations. Second, we have explored the rotational signature and velocity dispersion of the galaxy's halo using over 560 globular clusters with radial velocity measurements. We have also compared the dependence of these properties on galactocentric distance and globular cluster age and metallicity. Using globular clusters as tracer objects, we have analyzed the mass, and mass-to-light ratio of NGC 5128. Last, we have measured the structural parameters, such as half-light radii, of over 570 globular clusters from a superb 1.2-square-degree Magellan/IMACS image. We will present the findings of these studies and discuss the connection to the formation and evolution of NGC 5128.

AbstractWe present results of a (F)UV spectral analysis of 15 hot, hydrogen-rich central stars of planetary nebulae (CSPNe) of DAO-type (A 7, A 31, A 35, A 39, NGC 3587, NGC 6720, NGC 6853, NGC 7293, PuWe 1, Sh 2-174) and O(H)-type (A 36, Lo 1, LSS 1362, NGC 1360, NGC 4361). The sample covers a wide range of parameters (Teff ≈ 70–130 kK, log g = 5.4–7.4). It represents different stages of post-AGB evolution. The derived stellar parameters are crucial constraints for AGB nucleosynthesis and stellar evolutionary calculations. Detailed spectral analyses using fully line-blanketed NLTE model atmospheres including 23 elements from hydrogen to nickel are performed. Additional modeling of the ISM line absorption enables to unambigiously identify nearly all observed lines and to improve both, the photospheric as well as the ISM model.

The steric and electronic influence of backbone substitution in IMes-based (IMes = 1,3-bis(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)imidazol-2-ylidene) N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHC) was probed by synthesizing the [RhCl(CO)2(NHC)] series of complexes to quantify experimentally the Tolman electronic parameter (electronic) and the percent buried volume (%V bur, steric) parameters. The corresponding ruthenium–indenylidene complexes were also synthesized and tested in benchmark metathesis transformations to establish possible correlations between reactivity and NHC electronic and steric parameters.

Abstract. Noctilucent clouds (NLC) are the highest clouds in the Earth's atmosphere, observed close to the mesopause at 80–90 km altitudes. Systematic NLC observations conducted in Moscow for the period of 1962–2005 and in Denmark for 1983–2005 are compared and statistical results both for seasonally summarized NLC parameters and for individual NLC appearances are described. Careful attention is paid to the weather conditions during each season of observations. This turns out to be a very important factor both for the NLC case study and for long-term data set analysis. Time series of seasonal values show moderate similarity (taking into account the weather conditions) but, at the same time, the comparison of individual cases of NLC occurrence reveals substantial differences. There are positive trends in the Moscow and Danish normalized NLC brightness as well as nearly zero trend in the Moscow normalized NLC occurrence frequency but these long-term changes are not statistically significant. The quasi-ten-year cycle in NLC parameters is about 1 year shorter than the solar cycle during the same period. The characteristic scale of NLC fields is estimated for the first time and it is found to be less than 800 km.

Abstract. We present a case study of a noctilucent cloud (NLC) display appearing on 10-11 August 2000 over Northern Sweden. Clear wave structures were visible in the clouds and time-lapse photography was used to derive the parameters characterising the gravity waves which could account for the observed NLC modulation. Using two nearby atmospheric radars, the Esrange MST Radar data and Andoya MF radar, we have identified gravity waves propagating upward from the upper stratosphere to NLC altitudes. The wave parameters derived from the radar measurements support the suggestion that gravity waves are responsible for the observed complex wave dynamics in the NLC.

Purpose: To evaluate sound quality preferences of participants wearing hearing aids with different strengths of nonlinear frequency compression (NFC) processing versus no NFC processing. Two analysis methods, one without and one with a qualifier as to the magnitude of preferences, were compared for their percent agreement to differentiate a small difference in perceived sound quality as a result of applied NFC processing. Research Design: A single-blind design was used with participants unaware of the presence or strength of NFC processing (independent variable). The National Acoustic Laboratories-Nonlinear 2 (NAL-NL2) prescription of amplification was chosen because audibility is intentionally not prescribed in the presence of larger sensorineural hearing loss thresholds. A lack of prescribed audibility, when present, was deemed an objective qualifier for NFC. NFC is known to improve the input bandwidth available to listeners when high-frequency audibility is not otherwise available and increasing strengths of NFC were examined. Experimental condition 3 (EC3) was stronger than the manufacturer default (EC2). More aggressive strengths (e.g., EC4 and EC5), however, were expected to include excessive distortion and even reduce the output bandwidth that had been prescribed as audible by NAL-NL2 (EC1). Study Sample: A total of 14 male Veterans with severe high-frequency sensorineural hearing loss. Data Collection and Analysis: Participant sound quality preference ratings (dependent variable) without a qualifier as to the magnitude of preference were analyzed based on binomial probability theory, as is traditional with paired comparison data. The ratings with a qualifier as to the magnitude of preference were analyzed based on the nonparametric statistic of the Wilcoxon signed rank test. Results: The binomial probability analysis method identified a sound quality preference as well as the nonparametric probability test method. As the strength of NFC increased, more participants preferred the EC with less NFC. Fourteen of 14 participants showed equal preference between EC1 and EC2 perhaps, in part, because EC2 showed no objective improvement in audibility for six of the 14 participants (42%). Thirteen of the 14 participants showed no preference between NAL-NL2 and EC3, but all participants had an objective improvement in audibility. With more NFC than EC3, more and more participants preferred the other EC with less NFC in the paired comparison. Conclusions: By referencing the recommended sensation levels of amplitude compression (e.g., NAL-NL2) in the ear canal of hearing aid wearers, the targeting of NFC parameters can likely be optimized with respect to improvements in effective audibility that may contribute to speech recognition without adversely impacting sound quality. After targeting of NFC parameters, providers can facilitate decisions about the use of NFC parameters (strengths of processing) via sound quality preference judgments using paired comparisons.
