Introduction: Errors when filling in or interpreting the results of the EWS assessment causes delays and inaccuracies for the nurses when providing a clinical response. The aim of this study was to explain the relationship between the nurse’s knowledge and skill with the speed and accuracy of the nurse when assessing via EWS.Methods: This study used a correlation design with a cross-sectional approach. The sample consisted of 104 nurses working in the inpatient ward of internal medicine according to the inclusion criteria. The sample was obtained through purposive sampling. The independent variable was the nurses’ knowledge and skill while the dependent variable was the nurse’s speed and accuracy when assessing using the EWS. The instruments used were questionnaires and observation sheets. The data was analyzed using Spearman Rho.Results: The results of the study showed that there was a very strong correlation between the knowledge-accuracy of the nurses when assessing using the EWS (r = 0.805; p = 0.000) and the nurse's skill-accuracy when assessing using the EWS (r = 0.823; p = 0.000). There was a strong correlation between the knowledge-speed of nurses assessing using the EWS (r = 0.269; p = 0.006) and the nurse's skill and speed when assessing using the EWS (r = 0.262; p = 0.007).Conclusion: The nurse’s knowledge and skill has a stronger relationship with accuracy when assessing using the EWS when compared to the nurses' speed.

ABSTRACT: Nurse honor guards are groups of volunteer nurses that attend fellow nurses' funerals or memorial services and conduct a brief ceremony to recognize the nurse's dedication to the profession. These ceremonies incorporate elements of nursing's history, including the wearing of traditional nursing uniforms. Nurse honor guards highlight that nurses not only tend to the well-being of their patients but also share a collective responsibility to support and care for one another. This article describes what nurse honor guards do and discusses the authors' experiences participating in them.

Patient safety is an essential indicator of healthcare quality. The initial interview indicated that within a month, there is always a patient safety incident such as patient falls and medication errors. The organizational culture, vision, mission, goals, and leadership style surely have an impact on a nurse's behaviour when it comes to patient safety. Many research studies discovered that the culture of organization inherent in nurses impacts the quality of hospital services, and nurses can reflect themselves as professional nurses with the organizational performance culture. This study aimed to find a correlation between corporate culture and nurse’s behaviour to patient safety. This study used a quantitative correlational method with a cross-sectional approach. The sample consisted of 191 nurses who had been selected through accidental sampling. The questionnaires on organizational culture and nurse’s behaviour in patient safety are distributed online via Google Forms and have been tested for its validity and reliability on 31 nurses. This study was conducted from March 29 to June 30, 2020. More than half of the respondents observed a bad organizational culture, and more than half of the nurses demonstrated poor behaviour in implementing patient safety. The Spearman correlation test revealed no significant relationship between corporate culture and nurse’s behaviour in adopting patient safety. The hospital administration can provide coaching in terms of socialization, training, mentorship, and supervision through the head nurse or team leader.

In the process of providing service, nurses are the most interactive healthcare personnel with patients. Nurses in public hospitals have a huge responsibility for providing quality health care. The study aims to confirm and re-test the impact of work-life balance and workload on job satisfaction and the performance of nurses. The sample determination uses the nonprobability sampling method with the technique of taking saturated samples (sensus), so that the entire population of 32 people is the sample. Path analysis is used to test hypotheses in research using SmartPLS version 3.2.9. The study revealed that work-life balance showed a significant positive impact on job satisfaction but no significant impact on nurses’ performance; the workload on an informed nurse’s job satisfaction can have an equally significant positive effect on the performance of the nurse; the satisfaction of the real job does not have a significant effect on the nurse's performance; and job satisfaction cannot affect the impact of work-life balances and workloads on the nurse's performance.

Professional values can direct nurse behavior. Nurse behavior should reflect caring in providing nursing services as the essence of nursing. The method used in this paper is a case study. Data collection is done by interviews, document observation, and distributing questionnaires to nurses in the amount of 517 nurses. The questionnaire used was the Nursing Professional Value Scale and Nurse that was modified and used to determine the nurse's professional score scale. Interviews were conducted with the field and nursing committee using a semi-structured interview guide. Interview material includes management functions related to the application of the nurse's professional values. Data analysis using fishbone analysis. The results showed that the professional score scale of nurses was quite strong, namely 101.19, but the application of professional nurses' values was still not optimal because some nursing leaders were still less professional. The recommendation from this case study is that nursing management needs to motivate nurses to apply nurses' professional values through attitudes and behaviors that have implications for the quality of nursing services and have an impact on patient satisfaction and safety.

Background. Nonpharmacological pain management refers to providing pain management intervention that does not involve the use of drugs. Effective management of a patient’s pain is a vital nursing activity, and it needs a nurse’s adequate pain-related knowledge and a favorable attitude. Globally, many studies stated that the lack of knowledge and unfavorable attitude of nurses towards nonpharmacological pain management was the prevailing persistent challenge. Objective. To assess knowledge, attitude, and associated factors towards nonpharmacological pain management among nurses working in Amhara region Comprehensive Specialized Hospitals, Ethiopia, 2021. Method. An institutional-based cross-sectional study was conducted from April to May 30, 2021. A total of 845 nurses were selected using a simple random sampling technique. Data were collected by using a pretested self-administered structured questionnaire. Then, data were checked, coded, and entered into Epi Info version 7.0 and exported to SPSS version 25.0 software for analysis. Results. A total of 775 nurses participated in this study, with a response rate of 91.8%. Of the total participants, 54.2% (95% CI: 50.6–57.9) and 49.8% (95% CI: 46.1–53.2) of nurses had adequate knowledge and a favorable attitude, respectively. The study revealed that educational status (AOR = 3.51 (95% CI: 1.37, 8.99)), years of experience (AOR = 5.59 (95% CI: 2.86, 10.94)), working unit (AOR = 5.61 (95% CI: 2.25, 13.96)), nurse-to-patient ratio (AOR = 2.33 (95% CI: 1.44, 3.78)), and working hours (AOR = 2.15 (95% CI: 1.27, 3.62)) were significantly associated. This finding also revealed that monthly income (AOR = 4.38 (95% CI: 1.64, 11.69)), nurse-to-patient ratio (AOR = 1.89 (95% CI: 1.19, 3.01)), and nurses’ adequate knowledge (AOR = 4.26 (95% CI: 2.91, 6.24)) were significantly associated with the attitude of nurses. Conclusion and Recommendations. More than half and nearly half of the nurses had adequate knowledge and a favorable attitude towards nonpharmacological pain management, respectively. Educational qualification, years of experience, working unit, nurse-to-patient ratio, and prolonged working hours per day were significantly associated with nurse’s adequate knowledge. Monthly income, nurse-to-patient ratio, and nurse’s knowledge were significantly associated with the attitudes of nurses. It is better to give attention to reviewing the nursing curriculum, achieving a standardized nurse-to-patient ratio, recruiting additional nurses, training, and upgrading nurses with continuing education.

AbstractThis study examines factors influencing Australian nurses' decisions to quit their jobs, the pathways they take after quitting, and estimates the average wage change associated with a nurse changing professions. Using data from the Household, Income, and Labour Dynamics in Australia Survey and panel data estimation methods, we find that a nurse's pre‐exit hourly wage is significantly associated with their exit decision when controlling for relevant exogenous factors. We also find that most nurses who change professions stay in the healthcare sector, which is characterised by significant increases in hourly wages and occupational prestige and suggests that these nurses change jobs for better opportunities. We conclude that while nurses' exit decisions are not associated with a loss of human capital in healthcare, higher wages would have to be paid if the policy objective is to increase nurse retention.

Introduction: Religious orientation is associated with psychological well-being resulting from treating negative life events as opportunities for personal and spiritual development. Purpose: To assess the impact of religious beliefs on the evaluation of nurses' work in the perception of patients, nursing students, and nurses. Materials and methods: the study included 150 patients, 150 nurses, and 150 nursing students, using our questionnaire. Results: 56.7% of patients, 46.7% of students, and 47.7% of nurses assessed the religious sphere of life as very important. Respondents identified good family life as the most important value in life (82.7% of patients, 76% of students, and 92% of nurses). Emotional needs were the greatest motivation for students (70.7%) and nurses (72.7%) to increase religious activities; for patients, it was an illness in the family (42.7%). Patients (62.4%), students (48.7%), and nurses (61.1%) were of the opinion that religion could affect performing work-related tasks. Blood transfusion was the most likely procedure to be affected by patients’ religious beliefs (50% of patients, 44.7% of students, 58% of nurses) or nurses’ religious beliefs (29.3% of patients and 18.7% of nurses). Conclusions: Patients more often reported that religion may have some effects on choice of profession, and most respondents did not consider religious beliefs an obstacle in making new acquaintances or performing work-related tasks. In the case of a conflict between a nurse’s therapeutic activities and a patient’s or nurse’s religious beliefs, the nurse should assign the patient to another nurse.

Job-related burnout has been reported by intensive care nurses worldwide; this study was performed to examine burnout in intensive care unit bedside nurses and nurse technicians in Brazil. A cross-sectional survey that included the Practice Environment Scale and the Maslach Burnout Inventory was completed by 209 nurses and nurse technicians working in 4 Brazilian intensive care units in 3 teaching hospitals. Compared with nurse technicians, nurses reported higher levels of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization, and a lower level of personal accomplishment. A 1-unit increase in the quality of nurse practice environment was associated with a decrease in high levels of emotional exhaustion and low levels of personal accomplishment. Each additional patient added to a nurse’s workload was associated with an increase in high emotional exhaustion and low personal accomplishment. Approximately one-third of Brazilian nurses working in intensive care units report job-related burnout; the practice environment and staffing appear to be contributing factors.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the interactions between nurses and patients on ventilators and the relationship between characteristics of these nurses and their communication with patients. METHODS: An analytical, cross-sectional, experimental design was used to examine the work experience of 30 nurses with ventilated patients, the perceived level of consciousness of their ventilated patients, and the actions and reactions of nurses in relation to these patients. RESULTS: Significant correlations were found between the nurse's perception of the patient's degree of responsiveness and the number of positive and negative interactions with the patient, and between the length of time the nurse cared for the patient and the number of positive nurse reactions. Interaction patterns are also apparent from the data collected. CONCLUSIONS: Findings suggest that nurses' perceptions of patients' responsiveness and length of time nurses care for patients will influence nurse-patient interactions. Patterns of interaction suggest that nurses spend more time providing patients with information that the nurses consider important, rather than assessing or responding to patients' needs.

Workload is an analysis process of the time used by someone in completing a job task, a disproportionate workload will have an impact on stress and can have a negative impact, namely job dissatisfaction. Objectives in this study is to see how workload related to nursing satisfaction during a pandemic in the Pendaluangan Jember area. The research design is a cross-sectional correlation description, Spearman Rho data analysis, the total population of all practicing nurses is 115 nurses with the sampling technique using the Slovin formula with a margin of error of 5% so that 112 nurses are taken as a sample (simple random sampling). The results showed that there was no relationship between workload and nurse satisfaction at the Pendalungan Jember Hospital (p=0.067). The majority's workload assessment was moderate (50%) where out of 112 nurse respondents, the majority of 84 nurses had worked > 5 years (75%), while in terms of education, the majority of Vocational Nursing graduates were 82 nurses (73.2%). Hospitals can increase nurse satisfaction by providing workloads for nurses according to the clinical authority and competence of each nurse so that the nurse's workload becomes lighter and nurse satisfaction can increase.

Background: Proper injecting technique ensures maximum effectiveness and minimizes the incidence of enoxaparin-related local side effects. Objective: To develop a pharmacist-led educational program and evaluate its benefit in improving the nurses' enoxaparin injecting technique for hospitalized patients. Methods: A pre-post study design was conducted from March to July 2023, involving nurses working the day shift at Baghdad Teaching Hospital. Nurses were given an interactive education through a brief lecture with open discussion and training on the correct enoxaparin injecting technique. A clinical pharmacist observed and recorded the enoxaparin injecting technique for each nurse twice: once at the start of the study and again after the nurse's enrollment in the educational program. Results: At the baseline level, only 12.5% of the participating nurses had a good technique for injecting enoxaparin. The nurse's gender, level of education, work history, or workplace did not significantly affect her poor enoxaparin injection technique. After enrolling nurses in the pharmacist-led educational program, the number of nurses with a good enoxaparin injection technique significantly increased from 12.5% to 59%. Conclusions: Effectiveness was improved considerably by the currently developed interactive pharmacist-led nurse education.

Introduction: In nursing, identifying factors encouraging positive work attitudes is extremely important since a nurse’s performance directly impacts the quality of the care they provide, and, therefore, their patients’ health. Objective: The main objective of this research is to analyze whether the supervisor–nurse relationship is positively correlated with a nurse’s organizational citizenship behaviors. Thus, we established a main hypothesis as follows: the quality of the supervisor–nurse interpersonal relationship is positively related to the job satisfaction of the nurse, controlled by moderating the effects of psychological empowerment, the perceived organizational support, and leader–leader exchange. Methodology: This is a cross-sectional descriptive study with individuals as the units of analysis. The population studied comprised all the nurses and supervisors working in nine public hospitals in the autonomous community of Aragon (Spain). The sample consisted of 2541 nurses, 192 supervisors, and 2500 paired dyads. Self-report questionnaires were used to ensure workers’ anonymity. The dependent variable was the nurse’s organizational citizenship behaviors; the main independent variable was the supervisor’s leadership; the moderating variables were the nurse’s empowerment, the organizational support the nurse perceived, and the quality of the supervisor–superior relationship. Results: Empirical evidence demonstrates that the quality of the supervisor–nurse relationship is positively correlated with organizational citizenship behaviors. The results also confirm the moderating effect of nurses’ empowerment and of the organizational support they perceive. Discussion: Our research shows how important it is for organizations to establish management practices promoting high-quality nurse–supervisor relationships; thus, hospital management should monitor both the supervisors’ performance and leadership. Conclusions: The quality of the relationship the supervisor establishes with their nurses is vitally important since it is a necessary requirement for beneficial results for the organization as a result of citizenship behavior practice.

Background: Along with the recent healthcare reform, intraprofessional collaboration in nursing is considered an essential factor for managing the challenges related to diverse roles and tasks of nurses in providing high quality care. There is lack of knowledge on how the nursing work environment could influence nurse-nurse collaboration. Purpose: The study aimed to assess the relationship between nursing work environment and nurses’ intraprofessional collaboration. Methods: A total of 300 nurses working in four teaching hospitals participated in this multicenter cross-sectional study. Data were collected using the Nurse-Nurse Collaboration Scale (NNCS) and the Practice Environment Scale of the Nursing Work Index (PES–NWI). The Pearson correlation test was used to analyze the data. Results: The results showed that the mean score of the PES–NWI was 2.65±0.32 out of 4. The highest and lowest scores belonged to the subscales of the nursing foundations for quality of care (2.86±0.31) and staffing and resource adequacy (2.24±0.49), respectively. The mean total score of nurse-nurse collaboration was 2.94±0.21 out of a score of 4. The results showed a significant positive relationship between nursing work environment and nurses’ intraprofessional collaboration (r=0.49, p<0.05).Conclusion: The nursing practice environment has a positive and significant relationship with nurse-nurse collaboration. Therefore, improving nurses’ practice environment and providing healthy workplaces could improve the intraprofessional nurse’s collaboration. Moreover, nurse managers should improve nurses’ skills in some areas of collaboration such as conflict management.

Productivity in nursing is closely related to the efficiency and effectiveness of nurses in providing nursing care. This study aims to analyze the work productivity of nurses in the inpatient room at Bina Kasih Hospital, Medan 2021. This study is a descriptive qualitative study. This research was conducted in the inpatient ward of Bina Kasih Hospital, Medan in October 2021. There were 10 informants in this study which included nurses and patients. The data were analyzed using an interactive model. Based on the results of the study, it was found that the productivity of nurses was still low, could not carry out their authority properly, so that patients complained a lot about the actions given by nurses. In addition to nurses doing nursing care, nurses also do work outside of that, namely cleaning, nurse stations, cleaning patient rooms. If the patient's complaint is classified as a mild complaint, the nurse immediately handles it, but if the complaint must involve management, the nurse makes a patient complaint report addressed to the supervisor. Nurses in the room have not been able to apply the nursing care process starting from the assessment stage to the evaluation stage. The nurse is still copying and pasting from the nurse's notes on the previous shift. nurses have applied smiles and greetings. Suggestions in this study are for nurses to be better in the future in order to improve the quality of Human Resources in the field of nursing as nursing service providers and public interest in seeking treatment at the Bina Kasih hospital.

Calling is a strategy for discovering the purpose and significance of every individual, including the nurse. The awareness of a calling can motivate nurses to commit to a career. The greater nurses' awareness of their calling, the greater their devotion and sense of purpose in their work. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between calling and career commitment among Christian nurses in Indonesia. The study utilized a quantitative correlational method and cross-sectional approaches utilizing online survey technique. Accidental sampling was utilized, obtaining 96 Indonesian Christian nurses. The instruments were the Indonesian version of the Calling and Vocation Questionnaire (CVQ) (Alpha Cronbach = 0.873) and the Career Commitment Scale (CCS) questionnaire (Alpha Cronbach = 0.820). Data was analyzed using descriptive and bivariate analysis using Spearman rank correlation test. This study discovered a moderately positive correlation between a nurse's calling and career commitment (p = 0.001; r = 0.362). It is suggested that future research investigates other factors that may affect the nurse's career commitment. Understanding one's own calling as a nurse and acting on it is essential to increasing nurses' commitment to their profession.

The nurse as leader is a critical pillar of nursing professional identity to support ongoing development of nurses in a safe, effective, and healthy work environment. Defined as “inspiring self and others to transform a shared vision into reality” ( University of Kansas School of Nursing, 2023 ), the Nurse as Leader Pillar is developed throughout a nurse's career. Starting with nursing school, students must learn nursing leadership skills and develop and integrate leadership characteristics into their practice. Professional development specialists must embed these characteristics into nursing education, as all nurses are leaders. Current nurses in practice must set the stage and model leadership in their environment as new nurses are introduced into the profession. [ J Contin Educ Nurs. 2023;54(11):497–500.]

The problem of nurse performance is still an issue in various countries. The performance of nurses always attracts attention in Indonesia. The Province of North Sumatra even stated that the performance of nurses decreased, from 0.52 in 2013 to 0.48 in 2014, and continued to decline until 2015. Good nurse performance is a determining factor for the reputation of a hospital before the community in achieving success. Supervision by the head of the nurse's work unit is a problem related to the nurse's performance appraisal process. This study uses a quantitative approach, observational, with a cross-sectional design. The research sample consisted of 64 nurses in the Inpatient Installation of Aek Kanopan Hospital who were selected according to the criteria. The research data obtained were analyzed using univariate analysis which aims to describe the frequency distribution related to supervision data, Nurse Work Performance, and Patient Safety Implementation. Bivariate analysis which aims to prove the relationship between supervision and nurse performance on the implementation of patient safety uses Pearson's correlation with a 95% confidence level. There is a relationship between clinical supervision on the overall performance of nurses with a Pearson Chi-Square value = 5.146 and a p = 0.023 (p <0.05). In addition, there is also a relationship between the overall performance of inpatient nurses on the implementation of inpatient safety, with a Pearson Chi-Square value of 12.292 and a value of p = 0.000* (p <0.05). The better the performance of the nurse in the inpatient room, the implementation of inpatient patient safety will also be better.

A study was undertaken in the hospice unit at a large, midwestern community hospital to investigate the sources of stress experienced by hospice nurses. The case material reported in this article is based on observations, interviews with nurses, written stressful incident reports completed by nurses, and support group discussions. A number of sources of stress experienced by hospice nurses are identified. Physical characteristics of the unit as well as staffing policies designed to improve the quality of care resulted in conflict and feelings of alienation from other hospital personnel. Procedures followed in admitting patients to the hospice created stress when they were not fully supported by hospital administrators and physicians. Other policies related to the preparation of meals and open visitation increased the nurse's work load. At the same time, greater involvement with the patient and family during the dying process resulted in increased emotional demands on the nurse. Nurses experienced a sense of loss when a patient they had grown attached to died or was discharged to another institution. Stress also resulted from the nurse's exclusive involvement with terminally ill patients. Continual involvement with dying patients precipitated anxiety and superstitions concerning the nurse's own vulnerability and was particularly stressful when the nurse had experienced the death of someone close to her outside of the hospital.

The purpose of this study is to understand the impact of Nurse Experience (NE) and Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) on nurses’ workflow and process time in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU). In this study, a combination of data from the time-motion study observations, ICU nurses’ Real-Time Location System (RTLS), and the Real-Time Measurement System (RTMS) data were used to develop multiple Hierarchical Task Analysis (HTA) charts. HTA chart helped us to identify the ICU nurses’ workflow patterns. The results showed that ICU nurses spent over 47% of their time on performing primary care (in-room activities) and 25% on out-of-room activities. Furthermore, NE levels and SOFA scores had significant impacts on the average process time of nurse handoff, in-room Electronic Medical Record (EMR) charting, and the workflow patterns of out-of-room activities and out-of-room EMR usage. The outcomes of this study will provide a detailed workflow of ICU nurses and might help nurse managers to conduct a better strategy for improving ICU nurse’s workflow.

Interpretive phenomenology was used in this study to explore what keeps nurses in nursing by examining the impact of the relational experience of the nurse caring for the nursed in the context of the nursing situation. Eight practicing nurses were interviewed about what keeps them in nursing. Data were analyzed using Heideggerian hermeneutics and the theoretical framework of Boykin and Schoenhofer’s nursing as caring theory. Four themes, practicing from inner core beliefs, understanding the other from within, making a difference, and nursing as an evolving process, supported one constitutive pattern, intentional compassion energy, revealing that nurses intend to care compassionately.

A nurse’s necessity at a health centre viewed from workload analysis is required to identify a nurse’s necessities adjusted with service standards and real condition at a health centre. This requirement is in accordance with the change of an outpatient health centre status to be an inpatient health centre in which infrastructure and human resource need to be improved. This was a qualitative study using case study approach started from data collection, FGD, NGT, work sampling, to indepth interview with stakeholders who had experiences in calculating an employee’s necessities based on ABK and nurse representative. Furthermore, data were analysed using a form to calculate an employee’s necessities obtained from BKN. The results of calculation of a nurse’s necessities showed that number of nurses required for an inpatient unit were nine persons consisted of five skilled nurses and four expert nurses. This number was equal to nine beds that were required (1:1). On the other hand, number of nurses required for an outpatient unit including BP, UKM, and Pustu were 26 persons (16 skilled nurses and 10 expert nurses) or 1 nurse served 1,458 people or 456 families. Rembang 2 Health Centre needs to fulfil a nurse’s necessities by considering innovation of nursing services to reduce burden of human resource. A nursing committee needs to be formed by District Health Office as an institution that is responsible to supervise functional positions. Standards of nursing diagnosis and an information system of nursing care services need to be determined in order to describe an autonomy level of individual, family, group, and community in District of Rembang in terms of self-care. In addition, academics need to conduct further research regarding workload of other functional positions in health in order to achieve goals of national health development.

summary Telephone advice nursing includes triage, advice, referral, information and coordination. The aim of the study was to explore what telephone nurses base their assessments on. We conducted 14 interviews with seven telephone nurses at a health-care call centre in Sweden. Two authentic calls per nurse were used in stimulated recall interviews, where the nurses commented on the basis for their assessments. A qualitative manifest content analysis was employed. Three major categories emerged in the analysis: care-seeker, e.g. ‘symptomatic sounds’; nurse, e.g. ‘nurse's own experience’; and organization, e.g. ‘health-care accessibility’. The findings show that the telephone advice nurses’ bases for assessments appear to be very broad. They include both verbally and non-verbally communicated information, and care-seeker-, nurse- and certain organization-related factors influence the assessments. We found that an individualistic view of the care-seeker seems to dominate the assessments in non-urgent calls to a health-care call centre.

For more than 30 years, nursing students have had the opportunity to have clinical experiences related to their course requirements in the Dallas Public Schools. The Dallas Independent School District School Health Services Department staff provide an orientation to student nurses before their first day in the school clinic. To enhance their learning experience and clarify the regulations and expectations for student nurses, a handbook was prepared for the use of school nurses and the students. The Basic Health Care for the School-age Child: A Handbook for Student Nurses outlines the use of the school as a clinical experience setting. Another purpose for the handbook is to reduce the stress of this clinical rotation for the student nurse and for the staff nurse who serves as the student nurse’s preceptor. This article describes the development of the expectations for the clinical experience and the information included in the handbook. An outline of the material included in each section is presented to provide ideas for school nurses who provide or are considering providing a rotation for student nurses in their schools.
