Opium poppy cultivation in Thailand fell from 12,112 hectares in 1961 to 281 ha in 2015. One outlier exists: Chiang Mai province’s remote southwestern district, Omkoi. 90% of the district is a national forest reserve where human habitation is illegal. However, an ethnic Karen population has lived there since long before the law that outlawed them was created, unconnected to the state by road, with limited or no access to health, education and other services: they cultivate the majority of Thailand’s known opium poppy, because they have little other choice. They increasingly rely on cash-based markets, their lack of citizenship precludes them from land tenure which might incentivize them to grow alternate crops, and their statelessness precludes them from services and protections. Nor is the Thai state the singular Leviathan that states are often assumed to be; it is a collection of networks with divergent interests, of whom one of the most powerful, the Royal Forestry Department, has purposely made Omkoi’s population illegible to the state, and has consistently blocked the attempts of other state actors to complexify this state space beyond the simplicity of its forest. These factors make short-term, high-yield, high value, imperishable opium the most logical economic choice for poor Karen farmers residing in this “non-state” space.

Ban Rai Rockshelter in northwest Thailand, dating to the Terminal Pleistocene and Middle Holocene, includes evidence for hunter-gatherer exploitation of mammals, birds, reptiles, fish, and arthropods. Abundant faunal remains, identified throughout site deposits, include macaques (Macaca sp.) and Sambar deer (Rusa unicolor), but these identifications are influenced by an assemblage largely comprised of preserved tooth elements and fragmented bone. Area 3 at Ban Rai has the largest abundance and diversity of faunal remains recovered and identified in this study. Here, we examine the zooarchaeological assemblage from Ban Rai Rockshelter, to understand long-term hunter-gatherer subsistence change, influenced by site preservation, during and after the Pleistocene–Holocene transition. Our results support the presence of the exploitation of arboreal taxa during the Early and Middle Holocene in northwest Thailand.

AbstractDuring a mineralogical study of guano-derived sedimentary phosphate ore from the Lamphun area of northwest Thailand, robertsite [Ca6(H2O)6Mn3+9O6(PO4)9.3H2O] was identified and concentrated to a level suitable for X-ray diffraction and chemical analysis. Robertsite has previously been described only in association with altered phosphatic pegmatites. This new occurrence in a phosphate deposit indicates that it may be found in a broad spectrum of sedimentary rocks.

In forest and forest fringe settings of northwest Thailand, Anopheles minimus A was found to be the primary vector while An. dirus s./., An. sawadwongporni and An. maculatus s.s. are secondary vectors of malaria. The sites of transmission were investigated entomologically; parallel epidemiological investigations were made by another team. Malaria transmission in the villages in terms of the number of cases was as or more important than in the farm huts or in the forest, although the daily risk of infection was greater in forest activities. In a cage tunnel, lambdacyhalothrin on netting significantly reduced feeding success and killed mosquitoes which attempted to bite on a human arm through the treated nets. The aerial toxicity of the insecticide is apparently due to the spread of insecticide into the air as dust rather than as vapour. The biting rate of mosquitoes on humans close to a treated net was significantly reduced. The entomological impact of treated nets was evaluated in both long-term (two years) and short-term (48 days) studies in five and four communities, respectively. The results in the long-term evaluation showed that treated nets had very little effect on the densities and parous rates of An. minimus A, An. sawadwongporni and An. maculatus s.s. populations. However, the evaluation was carried out with a high washing rate, low coverage of re-impregnation and variations in climatic factors. In the short-term evaluation with intensive mosquito sampling, no mass effect on An. minimus A was observed. The exophagy, zoophily and early evening biting behaviours are probably the main factors reducing the effectiveness of treated nets. It is concluded that treated nets may provide improved personal protection especially among mobile populations but have little benefit in reducing mosquito population vectorial capacity of these species. There was cross-reactivity between the sporozoite monoclonal antibodies employed in the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and unknown factor(s) in blood of cows, buffaloes and pigs. This presumably caused false positive results when testing blood-fed zoophilic mosquitoes. Membrane feeding experiments showed that several zoophilic species are susceptible to both Plasmodium falciparum and P. vivax, except for a few species that are refractory to the former.

A GIS-based method has been applied for assessing the spatial soil erosion risk and sediment yield in Mae Rim watershed, Northwest Thailand. The gross soil erosion in each watershed cell was estimated using the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) by thoroughly determining its various parameters. RUSLE results showed mean annual soil loss rate of 31 tonnes ha-1 yr-1, while the mean annual suspended sediment yield was 7.4 tonnes ha-1 yr-1. From the results of the spatial analysis between controlling factors and soil erosion, it indicated that bare land, field crop land and high steep slope were linked to extreme soil erosion (> 150 tonnes ha-1 yr-1). With respect to soil erosion under land use and rainfall change, it was revealed that the conversion from deciduous forest to field crop area has very serious implications for soil erosion in the Mae Rim watershed. Indeed, transition from forest to agriculture may lead to erosion increase despite reduced rainfall. The results obtained from analysing scenario sensitivities identify synergistic effects on soil erosion hazard if bare land, field crop land and rainfall erosivity are increased simultaneously in the future.

This thesis focusses on the townspeople in Khun Yuam- a small market town near the Burma-Thailand border. They consist of Tai, Kon Mtiang and Thai speakers, most of whom are traders. Influenced by Weber, previous anthropological studies seem to agree that the Buddhists in Thailand are more concerned with the 'other-world' than secular matters. The laypeople, males in particular, are held to be more interested in seeking their own spiritual salvation than they are in making money in trade and commerce. Such an assumption leads to a conclusion that religion is separated from economic and political activities. If one agrees with this assumption, one will not understand why the economic boom has taken place in Thailand. I argue that Buddhist beliefs, especially meritmaking and the accumulation of merit, and trade are closely connected. Ordinary laypeople believe that one's own prosperity and wealth are due to one's past and present merit, so wealthy people are those who already have some merit. Without merit, one hardly achieves anything in one's life. Without money, it is almost impossible to make merit. In practice, such beliefs encourage the Buddhists to trade and make money in order to use some of their money to make merit. Since it is widely believed that good Buddhists must be good citizens who are loyal to the country, religious beliefs are also related to the politics. Monks are active in converting the non-Buddhists to Buddhism, as well as promoting the national awareness of 'being Thai' to them. These activities are sponsored by the laypeople, who believe they are a kind of merit-making. In fact, such a political movement is also supported by the current trading and tourist booms, formal education, the increasing influence of the Thai languages, mass media and entertainment. This national politics tries to integrate such a remoted area like Khun Yuam into the wider community - its nation-state. It seems to be a successful work. Monks and people who are involved in trade and commerce see no conflicts between their religious beliefs and political-economic practice and, to some degree, benefit from all of these activities.

Grave goods provide an important source of insight into the material and social cultures of past societies. The presented research examines variability in social complexity across Inland Southeast Asia through the analysis of selected mortuary assemblages at late Iron Age (c. 200 – 600 CE) sites in Central-Northwest Cambodia and Northeast Thailand. Phum Sophy, Phum Lovea, and Prei Khmeng form the Cambodian collection while Non Ban Jak (supplemented with published data from Noen U-Loke and Ban Non Wat) provide the data for Northeast Thailand. Analysis of assemblage sizes, the presence or absence of semi-precious material, and the appearance and abundance of ornamental circlets (bangles, rings, earrings, etc.) are used to generate relative wealth values for each burial assemblage. It is argued that, by the late Iron Age, two distinctly different systems of social complexity separated the regions, with a three-tiered, stratified economy in Cambodia compared to a ranked, unstratified economy in Northeast Thailand. A morphological typology is developed to classify banded circular ornaments, termed circlets, on three levels in order to assess variability in expressions of dress in mortuary populations. The first classification level examines the cross-sectional shape of circlets while the second and third reference the type of band opening and overhead shape respectively. The typology serves as a reference system for recording and analysing the shape and form of circlets and can be applied across Iron Age sites in Cambodia and Thailand. The additional insight gained from examining circlet morphology is used in the assessment of burial wealth, with assemblages featuring a range of designs registering higher than those with few forms. A conclusion is tendered that, while complexity increased during the course of the Iron Age in both regions, the communities in the Northeast Thailand retained the characteristics of a chiefdom in the late prehistory while Central-Northwest Cambodia appears to have developed to the point of a complex polity.

This chapter includes a study of a textual account of the origins of the Buddhist monastic sangha (and thus the beginnings of the the ritual of ordination) in the canonical Vinayapitaka (“Book of Discipline”). It then recounts the dramatic economic and social changes witnessed in Thailand in the late 20th c. before recounting how the seemingly ubiquitous practice of temporary ordination into the sangha by Thai males can be contrasted by a study of its observance in a rural village in northwest Thailand with its observance at a powerful and well-endowed temple in the suburbs of Bangkok.

The final chapter returns the analysis back to mindfulness in the United States, and the lessons learned about how mindfulness is understood differently in Thailand, Burma and Sri Lanka compared with its popular meanings in the United States. Drawing from the experiences of over 100 informants in the Pacific Northwest, the concluding chapter shows how the TAPES of temporality, affect, power, ethics, and selfhood are articulated in different ways by people in the different regions. The chapter includes a concluding discussion of how authoritative discourses about mindfulness move through space and time, and how these lessons may inform larger questions about the role of culture in mental processes around the world.
