The behaviour of standard bolted steel connections submitted to monotonic loads, through the use of numerical models, is presented in the current paper. The bolted connections allow speed up constructive processes in an increasingly competitive and globalized world in which the costs are a decisive factor in the development of a project. The use of computational tools in the analysis of bolted connections becomes determinant, mainly for new solutions or solutions less explored in terms of design codes. Throughout the years, bolted connections have been suffering transformations resulting from research activities performed by many authors. Rivets have been replaced by bolts, the main achievement being the pre-stressed bolts. Methodologies based on finite element analyses were proposed for double shear bolted connection. The non-linear behaviour of these connections is investigated and their performances are compared. In the numerical modelling of the bolted connection, linear elastic and elastoplastic analyzes reveal that there are two slip levels associated with local non-linearities caused by the contact pairs, which vary with clamping stresses.

AbstractFor two-dimensional manifold M with locally symmetric connection ∇ and with ∇-parallel volume element vol one can construct a flat connection on the vector bundle TM ⊕ E, where E is a trivial bundle. The metrizable case, when M is a Riemannian manifold of constant curvature, together with its higher dimension generalizations, was studied by A.V. Shchepetilov [J. Phys. A: 36 (2003), 3893-3898]. This paper deals with the case of non-metrizable locally symmetric connection. Two flat connections on TM ⊕ (ℝ × M) and two on TM ⊕ (ℝ2 × M) are constructed. It is shown that two of those connections – one from each pair – may be identified with the standard flat connection in ℝN, after suitable local affine embedding of (M,∇) into ℝN.

The Quality of Welded Connections Elements from the Steel 30HGS and Titanium Alloy Ti6Al4V The aim of that work was the evaluation of the quality of welded connections elements (welds) from the 30HGS steel and titanium alloy Ti6Al4V. The metallographic, factographic tests were used, and measurements of microhardness with the Vickers method. In the head weld of the 30HGS steel there were non-metallic partial division and bubbles observed. The average microhardness in the head connection was 320 HV0.1. There was no significant increase/decrease observed of microhardness in the head influence zone of the weld. There was a good condition of head connections observed, in accordance with the standard EN12517 and EN25817. In the head weld of Ti6Al4V titanium alloy there were single, occasional non-metallic interjections and bubbles observed. There were no cracks both on the weld, and on the border of the heat influence zone. The value of microhardness in head connection was in the range 300÷445 HV0.1. Reveal a very good condition of the head connections in accordance with the standard EN12517 and EN25817. The factographic tests prove the correctness of welded connections done and then heat treatment in case of steel and titanium alloy.

(2000), is the culmination of more than a decade's work and encompasses standard and original arguments against the feminist-vegetarian connection. This paper demonstrates that George's key arguments are deeply flawed, antithetical to basic feminist commitments, and beg the question against fundamental aspects of the debate. Those who do not accept the feminist-vegetarian connection should rethink their position or offer a non-question-begging defense of it.

On the basis literary sources analysis, it was defined, that failures of the pump rod threaded connections are the most common exceed one-third of the total number of the rod string failures. It is due to non-uniform load distribution across thread turns of the pump rod threaded connections. The simulation modelling of standard design of pump rods was performed and graphic dependencies of stress distribution were developed on the gaps the pump rod threaded connections. The methods to reduce load non-uniformity across thread turns of the pump rod threaded connections were considered. The design of the pump rod connection was proposed; it shall have the variable mean diameter of the nipple thread by adding one more element, fitted in the nipple body hole. The comparison of stress distribution dependencies on the gaps the pump rod nipple of the standard and proposed design showed that stress decrease in the first gap of the thread turn by 60 MPa, and in the third and next turns stresses increases and become uniform by the value. This change of stresses on turn gap, when it is operated in the well.

This study investigates the interconnection methods used to create a circular economy building featuring modularity and designed for disassembly and relocation. Designing modular buildings for disassembly and reuse can decrease waste production and material depletion, in line with the circular economy framework. Disassemblable buildings require connections to be easily accessible. Visible connections may be unpopular features; however, concealing these, yet leaving these accessible, presents a substantial design challenge. This study demonstrates solutions to this challenge by analyzing a purposely designed case study: the Legacy Living Lab. The challenges of disguising and sealing, such as by waterproofing, two types of connections are analysed: structural and non-structural. This study details the materials and connections used across the two analyzed connection types and compares the weights and reusability of components. Thus, a necessary case study is provided for practitioners to advance circular economy theory in the building industry. Notably, all connections in the Legacy Living Lab can be easily accessed with standard building tools, facilitating its disassembly and fostering component reusability.

In this paper we consider the measurements of bolted end-plate connections of tubular beams with cold-formed hollow rectangular aluminium sections. The motivation for these measurements originates from the fact that the aluminium standard (EN 1999-1-1) [1] does not cover the design of this very frequently used type of connection, where the bolts are located outside the edge-lines of the cross-section, i.e. corner bolts. Many tests and studies regarding this area have been conducted, but this paper brings value to the case where bi-axial bending is applied. The measurements have been carried out and the detailed results shall be shown. In this paper, we will focus on the six measurements where the tubular beams were bent uniaxially and biaxially to these limit points. The tests were stopped when the ultimate limit state was reached. In this case the connection never actually broke, but effectively the joint had lost its load bearing capacity. Some residual capacity still remained, but the displacements were too great resulting in a totally different behavior of the connection. The behavior of this connection is highly non-linear, since aluminium (AW 5754) as a material is strain hardening and the mechanism in the connection changes as the displacements increase.

(1) Background: In today's dentistry, implantology has become a therapeutic resource of choice in certain clinical situations. The design of implants has evolved in several aspects since their inception. Dental implants were initially designed with an external hex connection, although due to force transmission and security in the adjustment of the prosthesis, later implants featured an internal hex connection. This study aims to analyse the mechanical properties of two types of implants (an internal connection and an external connection) from the same manufacturer and their different prosthetic components (union screw between implant and prosthetic abutment, and the abutment itself) when subjected to different types of load. (2) Materials and methods: Intraosseous dental implants of similar shape, design and size, although different in type of connection (external vs. internal), were studied. The specifications of the UNI EN ISO 14801 test standard were used, with all determinations being carried out three times. Finally, the dimensional characterisation of the samples analysed after the dynamic load study was carried out, and the values of both study groups were compared by means of the non-parametric Mann–Whitney U test to find statistically significant differences (p < 0.05). (3) Results: For the static characterisation test, we found between 610.9 N and 986.1 N for the external connection and between 1263.6 N and 1324 N for the internal connection (p = 0.011). All of the dynamic load tests were positive and there was no failure in any of the components studied. (4) Conclusions: After the analysis of the samples studied in vitro, satisfactory results were obtained, demonstrating that both connections can support considerable mechanical loads according to international standards (UNI EN ISO 14801).

The tensor product of two arbitrary groups acting on each other was introduced by R. Brown and J.-L. Loday in [5, 6]. It arose from consideration of the pushout of crossed squares in connection with applications of a van Kampen theorem for crossed squares. Special cases of the product had previously been studied by A. S.-T. Lue [10] and R. K. Dennis [7]. The tensor product of crossed complexes was introduced by R. Brown and the second author [3] in connection with the fundamental crossed complex π(X) of a filtered space X, which also satisfies a van Kampen theorem. This tensor product provides an algebraic description of the crossed complex π(X ⊗ Y) and gives a symmetric monoidal closed structure to the category of crossed complexes (over groupoids). Both constructions involve non-abelian bilinearity conditions which are versions of standard identities between group commutators. Since any group can be viewed as a crossed complex of rank 1, a close relationship might be expected between the two products. One purpose of this paper is to display the direct connections that exist between them and to clarify their differences.

Одним з шляхів розвитку електричних мереж на території України є підключення нових побутових та промислових споживачів, а саме реконструкція існуючих ліній для дотримання рівня якості електроенергії. Основними проблемами є: - непрозорість надання послуг з приєднання електричних установок до електричних мереж; (Основною проблемою приєднання є те що, вам ніколи ніхто точно не скаже зразу – скільки коштуватиме приєднання до електричної мережі з певної точки на карті і за який час це буде виконано. Це явище створює можливості для «торгів» з клієнтами для «вичавлювання» з них максимальної економічної вигоди». Саме через це багато іноземних інвесторів переносить своє виробництво до інших країн). - непрозора процедура визначення плати за приєднання до електричних мереж; (Плата за приєднання має бути недискримінаційною та прозорою, а також публікуватися у відкритому доступі. – з такими умовами кожен зможе підрахувати ціну з точністью до 90-95%, але залишається питання прозорості. Зараз замовнику можуть поставити вимоги які рівні, або й перевищують ціну звичайного приєднання) - невідповідність законодавства України законодавству ЄС; (Після підписання Президентом України закону про «Про ринок електричної енергії» стартував дворічний перехід, під час якого всю архітектуру ринку перебудують у відповідність до правил, які працюють в ЄС. В галузі повинна з’явитися конкуренція і зникнути перехресне субсидіювання) Та ще багато інших проблем, які будуть розглянуті в цій роботі, тож я вважаю що тема досить актуальна. За результатами аналізу технічного стану енергетичної галузі України встановлюємо її незадовільний технічний стан та організацію експлуатації, що впливає на подальший розвиток економіки країни та життєвий рівень населення. Відповідно до міжнародних зобов’язань Україна має забезпечити розвиток бізнесу (зокрема підняття свого рейтингу Doing Business), адже на сьогодні рівень України ще не задовольняє інтереси суспільства. Для забезпечення належного рівня України принциповим питанням є спрощення процедури та пошук оптимальності приєднання до електричних мереж. Мета та завдання досліджень. Полягає у огляді та вирішення питань стосовно підвищення ефективності функціонування мереж електропередавальних організацій в частині приєднання споживачів до електричних мереж шляхом організаційно-управлінських, технікоекономічних, нормативно-правових, екологічних та технологічних питань. Об’єкт дослідження – процеси організації приєднання споживачів до електричних мереж електропередавальної організації. Предмет дослідження – методи підвищення ефективності організації приєднання. Методи дослідження. Методологічну основу проведеного наукового дослідження склали такі методи: нечітка логіка (теорія масового обслуговування), кластерний аналіз даних трансформаторних підстанцій, математично-фізичні розрахунки. Наукова та практична цінність роботи полягає у проведенні дослідження організаційно-управлінських, техніко-економічних, нормативно-правових, екологічних та технологічних питань, формуванні пропозиції по підвищенню ефективності діяльності електропередавальної організації щодо приєднання споживачів до електричних мереж, а також у розробці пропозицій запровадження геоінформаційної системи управління розвитком та експлуатацією об’єктів енергетики в Україні.

One of the ways to develop electricity networks in Ukraine is to connect new household and industrial consumers, namely the reconstruction of existing lines to meet the level of electricity quality. Now the customer can set requirements which equal to, or exceed the cost of a conventional connection) - inconsistency of Ukrainian legislation with EU legislation; (After the President of Ukraine signed the law on the electricity market, a two-year transition began, during which the entire market architecture will be rebuilt in accordance with the rules in force in the EU. Competition should appear in the industry and cross-subsidization should disappear) Yes, there are many other issues that will be considered in this paper, so I think that the topic is quite relevant. Based on the results of the analysis of the technical condition of the energy industry of Ukraine, we establish its unsatisfactory technical condition and organization exploitation, which affects the further development of the country's economy and living standards of the population. In accordance with Ukraine's international obligations should ensure business development (including raising its Doing rating) Business), because today the level of Ukraine does not satisfy the interests society. To ensure the proper level of Ukraine in principle the question is to simplify the procedure and find the optimal connection to electrical networks. The purpose and objectives of research. It consists in reviewing and resolving issues related to improving the efficiency of networks of electricity transmission organizations in terms of connecting consumers to electricity networks through organizational and managerial, technical and economic, regulatory, environmental and technological issues. The object of research - the processes of organization of connection of consumers to the electrical networks of the power transmission organization. The subject of research - methods to increase the efficiency of the organization of accession. Research methods. The methodological basis of the conducted research was the following methods: fuzzy logic (queuing theory), cluster analysis of transformer substation data, mathematical and physical calculations. The scientific and practical value of the work lies in the study of organizational and managerial, technical and economic, regulatory, environmental and technological issues, the formation of proposals to improve the efficiency of the transmission organization to connect consumers to electricity networks, as well as the development of proposals for geographic information management system development and operation of energy facilities in Ukraine.

This thesis aims to explore an aspect of the history of vernacular speech through analysis of some eighteenth century verse texts. These satirical anti-Jesuit pamphlets by Nicolas Jouin, known as the 'Sarcelades', were collected posthumously in 'Le Vrai Recueil des Sarcelles' of 1764. The texts purport to be in the patois of the peasants of Sarcelles and show features which may be paralleled in the vernacular speech of Paris and elsewhere, and even correspond with features of contemporary colloquial French. The study may appeal to French historical sociolinguists interested in reconstructing spoken language of the past, and particularly in the history of vernacular speech of Paris since the Middle Ages through to the eighteenth century, in the context of the development of urban dialects. In order to set the scene for a linguistic description of Jouin’s work the limited biographical information available was collated. Then a period of bibliographical research led to acquisition of copies of the texts which were to be studied in order to identify and examine their non-standard linguistic features. Firstly the process of growth of urban dialects was discussed, and then the development of the Paris vernacular in particular. Then attention was turned to direct written evidence in the form of commentary and to a number of texts from the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries containing features of the Paris vernacular. These had already been analysed by certain historical linguists, although the texts in the 'Sarcelades' had hitherto only been briefly mentioned. However, here they are considered to be of sufficient interest to be examined more closely, although it had to be established whether Jouin’s texts containing a selection of non-standard features could be regarded as an accurate depiction of the Paris vernacular at the period. The non-standard phonetic, morphological, syntactic, and lexical features in the texts were therefore compared with findings in other texts by previous commentators. Following these analyses it was noted to what extent the relative frequency of the variables correlates with the salience of certain features in popular speech in Paris at the period, as already observed in other texts by previous commentators, and it was concluded that in general established characteristics of the 'patois de Paris' at the period are to be found in the 'Sarcelades', even though there do remain certain features which do not appear to be generally attested elsewhere. Nevertheless, despite reservations concerning the authenticity of some of the non-standard features employed by Jouin, by bringing attention to this little-known series of texts this study may help to claim a place for the Sarcelades amongst the corpus of texts which reflect aspects of the lower-class sociolect, the 'patois de Paris', at the period.

This monograph addresses the need to clarify basic mathematical concepts at the crossroad between gravitation and quantum physics. Selected mathematical and theoretical topics are exposed within a not-too-short, integrated approach that exploits standard and non-standard notions in natural geometric language. The role of structure groups can be regarded as secondary even in the treatment of the gauge fields themselves. Two-spinors yield a partly original ‘minimal geometric data’ approach to Einstein-Cartan-Maxwell-Dirac fields. The gravitational field is jointly represented by a spinor connection and by a soldering form (a ‘tetrad’) valued in a vector bundle naturally constructed from the assumed 2-spinor bundle. We give a presentation of electroweak theory that dispenses with group-related notions, and we introduce a non-standard, natural extension of it. Also within the 2-spinor approach we present: a non-standard view of gauge freedom; a first-order Lagrangian theory of fields with arbitrary spin; an original treatment of Lie derivatives of spinors and spinor connections. Furthermore we introduce an original formulation of Lagrangian field theories based on covariant differentials, which works in the classical and quantum field theories alike and simplifies calculations. We offer a precise mathematical approach to quantum bundles and quantum fields, including ghosts, BRST symmetry and anti-fields, treating the geometry of quantum bundles and their jet prolongations in terms Frölicher's notion of smoothness. We propose an approach to quantum particle physics based on the notion of detector, and illustrate the basic scattering computations in that context.

The neural strength of a conscious event varies, increasing up the cortical hierarchy. Whereas the standard view may seem natural in terms of our own cognitive and behavioural experiences, and there are classical pathways to support the standard view, there are, in addition to the neural reasons considered in previous chapters, many non-neural reasons for questioning this view and taking an interactive view. I summarize these reasons briefly and then look at some of the many novel questions that are raised about the nervous system by the interactive view.

This chapter focuses on Hohfeldian claims. One person’s claim against another is correlative and equivalent to that other’s duty toward him. The relevant notion of “equivalence” is explained, and the relational nature of claims against and duties toward others—directed duties—is emphasized. Evidently one way better to understand claims is through an understanding of directed duties. Rights theorists generally assume without argument that the latter are constituted at least in part by non-directed or plain duties. This standard assumption can be questioned. In this connection, Judith Thomson’s argument to the effect that nothing useful can be made of the notion of a directed duty as opposed to a plain duty is reviewed and argued to be inconclusive.

This chapter extends Compassionate Moral Realism with an eye towards the issue of judgment internalism, that is, whether moral representation is necessarily connected to motivation. The challenges of giving a uniform account of the cognitive and motivational aspects of moral judgment are illustrated, and the possibility of a non-uniform, pluralist view is considered. After noting Compassionate Moral Realism’s compatibility with judgment pluralism, accounts are offered of both emotionally hot and emotionally cool moral judgments, using Chapter 12’s partial analysis of objective badness. In each case, a necessary connection to moral motivation is identified. For emotionally cool judgments, an agent who is not motivated is epistemically lacking by a standard that she acknowledges in that very judgment. Finally, it is explained how the present view can offer an attractive understanding of moral perception, as understood by Lawrence Blum and others.

According to the standard interpretation of the First Paralogism, its fallacy is based on a confusion between two meanings of the term ‘subject’, namely that of ‘thinking subject’ and that of ‘subject of predication’. This chapter argues that this interpretation is incorrect and that Kant in fact explains the illusion of cognizing ourselves as thinking substances by a misinterpretation of a certain logico-semantical feature of the representation ‘I’, namely that of non-predicability. This interpretation puts the First Paralogism in accord with the other Paralogisms, all of which are claimed by Kant to stem from a confusion between ‘logical’ and ‘real’ features of the self. It also allows us to relate the chapter on the paralogisms to Kant’s views on the connection between the ideas of pure reason and the progress towards the unconditioned in chains of prosyllogisms.

What does it mean to connect as Moroccans via mass media when there is widespread feeling of communicative failure? This book approaches the question by exploring situated talk about communicative failure, which speaks to how Moroccans seek to shape social and political relations in urban Fez. Over the last decade, laments of language and media failure in Fez have focused on communicative channels and were not just about social relations that used to be and had been lost, but also what ought to be and had yet to be realized. These channels, or mediums that connected people, ranged from objects such as devotional prayer beads and remote controls; to interactional forms such as storytelling registers, dress styles, and non-standard Arabic writing; and to media platforms like television news, Moroccan religious stations, or WhatsApp group chats. This book describes these multimodal channels and analyzes how, why, and when they moved from facilitator (intermediating connecting mechanism) to meddler (mediating sociality actor). Laments about communicative channel failures precipitated relationality projects by the state and several Fassi calibrations of those efforts. These laments were ways of speaking that created Moroccanness, the feeling of participating in the ongoing formations of Moroccan public relationality. Rather than furthering the discourse about Morocco’s conflict between liberal secularists and religious conservatives, this ethnography shows the subtle range of ideologies and practices evoked in Fassi homes to calibrate appropriate Moroccan sociality and political consciousness.

Before tackling the issues specific to nudging and its ethics in connection to social robots, I introduce nudging and its ethics more in general.

This chapter looks at how a psychiatrist treated a patient with non-epileptic seizures. The patient came to see the psychiatrist with a history of sudden onset seizure-like activity, mostly involving his head and neck. He had been treated with antiseizure medications and psychoactive drugs, with no improvement. The psychiatrist then found that the patient has family problems. The patient was the only person in the family who tried to hold it together. However, his reward for trying to pull the family together was being attacked from all sides. He would take it and keep trying. His only complaint took the form of his non-epileptic seizures. The psychiatrist then suggested to the patient that there was a connection between the mistreatment he was receiving and his seizures. Later, the psychiatrist measured the patient's hypnotizability using a standard measure designed for clinical as well as research use, called the Hypnotic Induction Profile, and proceeded to hypnotize him. After, the psychiatrist taught the patient to practice going into a state of self-hypnosis to be able to manage his seizures. This introduced him to a sense of control over them. At follow-up, the patient reported that he was practicing the self-hypnosis and that the seizures had diminished substantially in intensity and frequency.

The evolution of technology has made the connection of all types of devices to IP networks possible. In this paper, the authors investigate the possible usage of IPv6 in sensor networks connected through the Power Line Communication (PLC) non-wireless medium and demonstrate possible interoperability. This work is based on the adaptation of the IEEE 802.15.4 standard protocol constrained by the low-power, lossy and low data-rate context of PLC transceiver that uses pulse modulation. The aim is to provide interoperability features with other media using a robust and reliable communication stack. The target application of such results ranges from smart metering and environment monitoring to home control and urban area energy efficiency applications. This paper proposes the first adaptation of the IEEE 802.15.4 standard commons for the PLC medium. Following this standard interface, the authors demonstrate data communication on PLC with low power energy requirement using the pulse PLC physical layer. This paper also presents an initial implementation of the Routing Protocol for Low power and lossy networks (RPL) setup proposed by the IETF working group. In this context, the authors demonstrate interoperability in a testbed between PLC and Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN).

Renormalization group (RG) equations are used to characterize the large momentum behaviour of renormalized quantum field theories (QFT), assuming implicitly that such a universal large momentum physics can be defined, something which, beyond perturbation theory is not obvious. Since the initial effective QFT is valid only up to an energy-momentum scale much smaller than some cut-off, large momentum means much larger than the renormalization scale, but still much smaller than the cut-off scale. The existence of this large momentum physics implies the existence of a crossover scale between low and large momentum physics. One theoretic reason for discussing the large momentum behaviour is the apparent connection between the existence of consistent interacting renormalized QFTs and the presence of ultraviolet (UV) fixed points. The absence of identified UV fixed points in infrared-free QFTs, like the φ4 field theory or quantum electrodynamics (QED), leads to the triviality issue. The physics reason is that in collisions it is observed that quarks, fundamental particles of the Standard Model (SM) of particle physics, behave like free particles at the shortest distances presently accessible (the property of asymptotic freedom). This property can be explained by RG arguments if the free theory is an attractive UV fixed point. Therefore, the identification of QFTs where the free theory is an UV fixed point is important, and this has led to examine the large momentum behaviour of all QFTs renormalizable in four dimensions. It is shown that only theories having a non-Abelian gauge symmetry can be asymptotically free. As an application, the total cross section of electron–positron annihilation into hadrons at large momentum is calculated.

Activation of the inflammatory system occurs in most patients with advanced heart failure, regardless of etiology, and contributes to the pathophysiological milieu and the progression of the disease. The term inflammatory cardiomyopathy (ICM) refers to a group of disorders for which an acute or chronic myocardial inflammation is the central cause of abnormal cardiac structure or impaired cardiac function. The most common cause of inflammatory cardiomyopathy is lymphocytic myocarditis, which is most usually triggered by a viral infection, and occasionally by other infectious agents. Rare causes of specific inflammatory cardiomyopathies include cardiac sarcoidosis, giant cell myocarditis and eosinophilic myocarditis. Inflammatory cardiomyopathy can also occur in connection with autoimmune inflammatory diseases. Typical manifestations of inflammatory cardiomyopathy include chest pain, heart failure, and arrhythmias, but these symptoms and signs are unspecific. Although non-invasive diagnostic methods are emerging, the gold standard of diagnosis is the histological examination of an endomyocardial biopsy. Owing to the invasive nature of this technique and a modest diagnostic sensitivity, its use is limited. Therefore, the identification of inflammatory cardiomyopathy is elusive and the true incidence of the condition remains unknown. In most cases of lymphocytic myocarditis, recovery occurs within a few weeks following supportive treatment. In patients with cardiac sarcoidosis, giant cell myocarditis or eosinophilic myocarditis the use of immunosuppressive treatment is recommended, as is the case in myocarditis associated with autoimmune disorders. Such interventions may also have beneficial effects in chronic viral myocarditis once the virus has been cleared. In severe cases, treatment with mechanical circulatory support and/or heart transplantation may be required. Randomized intervention trials including antiviral, immunomodulating, or immunosuppressive agents are lacking. Similarly, new molecular-based methods and therapies tailored to specific pathogeneses have a potential to improve diagnosis and outcomes in patients with inflammatory cardiomyopathy. Still, such techniques and interventions are to be evaluated in adequate randomized controlled studies.

What exists at the fundamental level of reality? On the standard picture, the fundamental reality contains (among other things) fundamental matter, such as particles, fields, or even the quantum state. Non-fundamental facts are explained by facts about fundamental matter, at least in part. In this paper, I introduce a non-standard picture called the “cosmic void” in which the universe is devoid of any fundamental material ontology. Facts about tables and chairs are recovered from a special kind of laws that satisfy strong determinism. All non-fundamental facts are completely explained by nomic facts. I discuss a concrete example of this picture in a strongly deterministic version of the many-worlds theory of quantum mechanics. I discuss some philosophical and scientific challenges to this view, as well as some connections to ontological nihilism.

Ambiguity is one of fundamental properties of any language. The emergence of polysemy is connected with the result of the natural language development and the conditions for its functioning as a means of communication. Existing at various linguistic levels: lexical, grammatical, syntactic, homonymy can be the basis of ambiguity. Lexical and grammatical homonyms appearing in the process of the his-torical development of the language reduce the number of linguistic forms, give the expressiveness to the utterance and can be the basis for creating texts based on a play on words. However, semantic homonymy can make it difficult to understand state-ments, especially when translating jokes into another language. Recreating a pun, translators can make typical mistakes reproducing literally the semantics of the core elements, then it can lead to a violation of the norms of the target language, and the creation of texts that are beyond the understanding of the recipients. The ambiguity arising at the syntactic level is the implementation of such a non-standard connection of words in a sentence as a two-way communication, in which a word or phrase is subordinate not to one, but several dominants simultane-ously. This type of homonymy is presented in two varieties of homonyms: structural homonyms, which, being subordinate to any of several possible dominants, not only do not change the meaning of the utterance, but also give the speech more expressiveness, and syntactic homonyms, which make the addressee choose one of several possible meanings of the utterance. It is this kind of syntactic homonymy that is a negative phenomenon that impedes the process of communication, and, therefore, in need of elimination. This article examines the influence of syntactic and semantic homonymy on the process of speech perception. The paper points out the positive and negative as-pects of semantic ambiguity that affects the understanding of statements when creat-ing puns and translating them from Russian into English, examines the reasons for the emergence of syntactic homonyms in the Russian language, proves the patterns functionality of the text initial perception based on the rules of semantic combination of words.

This chapter shows how network theory can improve our understanding of institutional investors’ voting behaviour and, more generally, their role in corporate governance. The standard idea is that institutional investors compete against each other on relative performance and hence might not cast informed votes, due to rational apathy and rational reticence. In other words, institutional investors have incentives to free-ride instead of ‘cooperating’ and casting informed votes. We show that connections of various kinds among institutional investors, whether from formal networks, geographical proximity, or common ownership, and among institutional investors and other agents, such as proxy advisors, contribute to shaping institutional investors’ incentives to vote ‘actively’. They also create intricate competition dynamics: competition takes place not only among institutional investors (and their asset managers) but also at the level of their employees and among ‘cliques’ of institutional investors. Employees, who strive for better jobs, are motivated to obtain more information on portfolio companies than may be strictly justified from their employer institution’s perspective, and to circulate it within their network. Cliques of institutional investors compete against each other. Because there are good reasons to believe that cliques of cooperators outperform cliques of non-cooperators, the network-level competition might increase the incentives of institutional investors to collect information. These dynamics can enhance institutional investors’ engagement in portfolio companies and also shed light on some current policy issues such as the antitrust effects of common ownership and mandatory disclosures of institutional investors’ voting.

Thoracic aortic aneurysm (TAA) is defined as aneurysmal degeneration that occurs in the thoracic aorta. The incidence of TAA is increasing with improvements in screening, as well as advances in imaging. They are often asymptomatic but in some cases, they may compress the innominate vein or airway or they may stretch the left recurrent laryngeal nerve, causing hoarseness. TAA often results from cystic medial degeneration and when it occurs at younger ages, it is classically associated with connective tissue disorders, such as Marfan syndrome or, less commonly, Ehlers–Danlos syndrome and Loeys–Dietz syndrome. Mycotic aneurysms, once the predominant cause of ascending and arch aneurysms, are rare today. Diagnosis is often casual and can be suspected on the basis of chest X-ray or as for ascending aortic aneurysms, diagnosed by transthoracic echocardiogram. However, the computed tomography angiography scan represents the gold standard examination for diagnosis. The aortic arch operation consists of the replacement of the arch with reimplantation of the supra-aortic vessels. Effective methods of cerebral, myocardial, as well as visceral protection are necessary to obtain acceptable results in terms of hospital mortality and morbidity. The ‘elephant trunk’ procedure can be an alternative technique for total arch repair; however, a recent evolution of the ‘elephant trunk’ procedure is the ‘frozen elephant trunk’ technique. This technique consists of the implantation of the stented distal segment of the hybrid prosthesis into the descending aorta through the opened aortic arch, while the proximal, non-stented segment is used for conventional replacement of the aortic arch.

In this study, the finite element model of an API Line Pipe threaded pipe connection is presented. The non-linearities in material properties and contact behaviour are discussed. A series of modifications of the standard connection are simulated to gain a better understanding in the influence of geometrical and material parameters on the connection’s performance. Finally, test results obtained from a four-point bending fatigue experiment are presented and compared with numerical simulations.

Abstract Understanding the structural limits of subsea connectors used in offshore environments is critical to ensure safe operations. The latest industry standards establish the requirement for physical testing to validate analysis methodologies for connector designs. In this paper, an analysis methodology, compliant with the latest API 17G standard, is presented for calculating structural capacities of non-preloaded connectors. The methodology has been developed for complex combined loading scenarios and validated using full-scale physical testing for different connector families. Detailed 3-D, non-linear, finite element models were developed for three different non-preloaded connections, which consisted of threaded and load shoulder connectors. A comprehensive set of combined tension and bending moment structural capacities at normal, extreme and survival conditions were calculated for each connection. The calculated capacities were validated for each connection by performing a test sequence using full-scale structural testing. A final tension or bending to failure test was also completed for each test connection to validate the physical failure mode, exceeding the latest API 17G requirements. For all connections tested, capacities calculated using the methodology were validated from the successful completion of the test sequences. The physical failure modes of the test connections also matched the predicted failure modes from the FEA, and the tensile or bending moment loading at physical collapse exceeded that predicted by the global collapse of the FEA model. Using the validated approach described in this paper significantly reduces the requirement of physical testing for connector families, establishing confidence in the structural limits that are critical for safe operations.

Abstract Three-dimensional finite element analysis of an elastic, double rivet-row, aluminum alloy lap joint with countersunk, aluminum and steel rivets, is presented. Relations between the connection compliance, rivet deformation, peak contact pressures and slip amplitudes, in the absence of interference and clamp-up, are described. Analysis of a connection with non-countersunk rivets is presented in a companion paper. The trends seen in the results are similar to those obtained with non-countersunk rivets, although the peak stress concentrations in the present case are much higher. A superposition approach for estimating stress concentration factors in the panels of multi-row riveted connections with standard or countersunk rivets is presented.

When faced with an opportunity to install a branch connection using the “hot tapping” technique, pipeline operating companies have a wide variety of choices when it comes to branch connection design and installation practices (e.g., welding procedure options) depending on the application. The objective of a recently-completed joint industry project (JIP) was to develop industry best practices for hot tap branch connections, including a compendium of properly qualified procedures, guidance pertaining to specification of branch connection design for specific applications, and guidance pertaining to related areas of concern for which there was not widespread agreement. The core group of welding procedures that was developed and qualified for branch groove welds and sleeve fillet welds all involve the use of shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) and conventional low-hydrogen electrodes. There are applications for which other welding processes and consumables have advantages, so procedures for a broader range of applications were also developed and qualified. All of the procedures were qualified in accordance with the requirements of a range of relevant industry codes, including the Twenty-first Edition of API Standard 1104. The various options for branch connection design include integrally-reinforced fittings (e.g., Weldolets®), fabricated branch connections, and full-encirclement pressurized tees (e.g., Stopple® fittings). Some designs are better suited to some applications than to others. The guidance for specifying branch connection designs focused on geometric parameters, such as branch diameter, header diameter, and branch-to-header diameter ratio. Several antiquated branch connection designs that should no longer be used were also identified. The related areas of concern for which guidance was developed included the need for sleeve end fillet welds, burnthrough prediction for in-service welding on thin-wall pipelines, pressure limits/pressure reduction requirements, flow rate limits, heat-affected zone (HAZ) hardness limits, welder qualification requirements, branch connection location and fit-up, pipeline support requirements, branch connection welding sequence, preheating for in-service welds, fillet weld size requirements, extent of welding required for integrally-reinforced fittings, inspection/non-destructive testing (NDT) requirements, delay time prior to inspection for hydrogen cracking, pressure testing prior to tapping, and grouting of larger diameter, larger diameter-ratio branch connections. This guidance, along with the branch connection design guidance, was used to develop a generic company specification for installing hot tap branch connections in the field. The use of this guidance and the compendium of properly qualified welding procedures that was developed during the JIP will reduce the cost of installing hot tap branch connections, increase safety during installation, and increase the reliability of completed connections.

Non-metallic, flexible, thin, microchannel heat exchangers made from heat-sealable polyimide films have recently been developed for refrigeration and air-conditioning applications. In order for these heat exchangers to function properly and independently, robust and reliable connectors are needed. The connectors must be easy to manufacture and assemble, hold high pressures without leaking, and have the ability to connect to standard tubing and piping and different heat exchangers together in series and parallel. Three uniquely different connector designs have been developed, manufactured, and tested. The first includes a machined metal connector internally embedded within the heat exchanger that is capable of holding pressures up to 1.03 MPa. The second connector design includes a two-piece polymer assembly containing an O-ring used to seal around the inlet and outlet holes of the heat exchanger. The design incorporates a 10-degree wedge that creates the sealing force when fully assembled with the heat exchanger and has been pressure tested to 2.07 MPa without leaking. A variation of the design allows multiple heat exchangers to connect in series and in parallel. Finally, the third design contains no additional parts and connects two heat exchangers together by thermally bonding the inlet of one heat exchanger to the outlet of another. The thermally bonded connection was able to hold pressures greater than 2.07 MPa.

Hydrogen control in the case of severe accidents has been required by nuclear regulations to ensure the integrity of nuclear containment building. Therefore, getting detailed hydrogen flow and distribution is a key issue to resolve the hydrogen risk in containment and compartments. In this study, local hydrogen behavior has been investigated in a multi-subcompartments using Computational Fluid Dynamics method, concerning the local concentration in the multi-subcompartments. The multi-subcompartments containment is represented by four vessels interconnected by pipe. Hydrogen inlet pipe is located in source vessel. The analysis model is built by 3-dimensional Computational Fluid Dynamics code ANSYS-CFX in Cartesian coordinates. Computational domain is discretized in about 47559 cells, 87484 cells and 126388 cells, respectively. Taking a full consideration of the computational time and accurate, the medium mesh scheme is adopted to simulate the hydrogen transport. With standard k-ε turbulence model, the effects of the connecting pipe parameters and direction on hydrogen distribution in the multi-compartments are investigated. Local hydrogen behavior showed remarkably different in simulations with the change of the pipe parameter. Increasing the connection pipe diameter and decreasing the connection pipe length are helpful for helium flow between compartments. Compare with the vertical connection pipe, horizontal connection pipe is not conducive to the diffusion of hydrogen from source compartment to non-source compartment.

National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Standard 13 [1] establishes rules and criteria to provide a reasonable degree of protection for life-safety and property loss concerns resulting from fire. These rules and criteria are typically established for commercial type facilities governed by the Uniform Building Code (UBC) [2] or a comparable code. In concert with this stated purpose, NFPA 13 includes provisions for protection against damage when subject to earthquakes. The effectiveness of these rules and criteria may be challenged, however, when the safety function is extended beyond life-safety and property loss to Natural Phenomena Hazards (NPH) evaluation where nuclear safety is also an important issue. This paper presents a criteria and methodology for the evaluation of fire protection piping involving grooved couplings in a Department of Energy, Performance Category 3, multi-story structure. The footprint of the structure is approximately 540 feet by 250 feet or 135,000 square feet. Grooved type couplings are used extensively in the fire protection industry and represent a non-integral type connection between adjacent piping segments, as opposed to welded connections. Due to the nonintegral type connection and the allowable axial and lateral spans permitted by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Standard 13, these type couplings are sometimes considered to be “weak links” when subjected to earthquake loadings. The paper also presents a sample walk-down screening checklist focusing on criteria compliance as well as additional potential weak links that could result in additional seismic demands on the grooved couplings and the fire protection piping system.

The dissimilar material flange connections are often adopted to connect the austenite stainless steel pipes to the low alloy steel pressure vessels operated at an elevated temperature. The behavior of this flange connection is very complicated because of the non-uniform temperature distribution and the thermal expansion difference of dissimilar materials. The application of the metal ring gasket makes the behavior more complicated. An elastic plastic finite element analysis is one of the adequate ways to investigate the behavior of the following dissimilar material flanges with the metal ring gasket under the high pressure and elevated temperature operation. (1) Pipe flange: standard configuration, austenite stainless steel, (2) Nozzle flange: forged thick nozzle neck, low alloy steel covered with stainless steel overlay. The material of ring gasket is also an austenite stainless steel. This ring gasket contacts to and slips on the ring groove surfaces of flanges. The axi-symmetric analyses were made considering the sequence of initial bolting, internal pressure and non-uniform temperature distribution. The elastic plastic properties and temperature dependency of the materials were considered. From these analyses, the effects of the non-uniform temperature distribution and the thermal expansion difference of dissimilar material flanges on the contact pressure of the ring gaskets were made clear. The effect of flange size (14”–36”) was also investigated.

Abstract This paper discusses four different ultrasonic guided wave standards. Three of them are China’s national standards or industry standards: GB/T 31211-2014 “Nondestructive Testing Ultrasound Guided Wave Detection”, GB/T 28704-2012“Non-destructive testing—Test method for ultrasonic guided wave testing based on magnetostrictive effects”, and DL/T 1452-2015 “Thermal Power Pipeline Ultrasound Guided Wave Detection”. The another one is ASTM E2929:“Standard Practice for Guided Wave Testing of Above Ground Steel Piping with Magnetostrictive Transfusion”. Through six aspects in this article, including testing application scope, preliminary requirements, standard specimen and comparative specimen, distant amplitude curve and time gain curve, the existing difference between China and America is obvious and diversity. It is necessary to explore the underlying reasons for the connection of Chinese code and international code in the field of Non-destructive testing. During the standardization, anyone of the standard should be actually compared on the presentation of chart, and the verification and comparison of results, and lists the similarities and differences of each part based on GB31211. This paper provides reference for China to integrate with foreign standards in the field of ultrasonic guided wave detection of pressure vessel and pipelines.

API rated flanges [1] are used in oil and gas industries frequently. The current practice is to select a flange and its seal/gasket from a tabulated range of load and area of application. Some applications may require a unique flange or seal for a pressure and temperature that is not listed on the table. To design such non-API flange (geometry such as thickness, number of bolts, bolts pattern, etc. are different from API flange) that meets system requirements is a challenge. Currently there is no standard available as per authors knowledge to design non-API flange. Therefore, in this study, a finite element analysis with new acceptance criterion for the 5”-15-ksi non-API flange connection for different pressure and temperature has been performed. Elastic-plastic finite element analysis method is used to check the leak tightness [2]. A fatigue calculation based on elastic-plastic analysis with twice yield method as per ASME Section VIII, Division 2 [3], sec. 5.5.4, has also been performed. A new acceptance criterion based on industry practices are used for leak tightness. The contact pressure and contact pressure band width are used to check the leak tightness. The results showed that for all load cases seals have enough contact pressure and contact pressure band width to prevent leakage and they meet the acceptance criteria. The calculated fatigue life was found more than the required life for an application.
