Improving software quality involves reducing the quantity of defects within the final product and identifying the remaining defects as early as possible. It involves both its functionality and its non-functional characteristics, such as usability, flexibility, performance, interoperability and security. In fact, defects found earlier in the development lifecycle cost dramatically less to repair than those found later. However, engineers cannot address non-functional quality requirements such as reliability, security, performance and usability early in the lifecycle using the same tools and processes that they use after coding and at later phases. Approaches such as stress testing for reliability, measuring performance and gauging user response to determine usability are inherently post-integration techniques. Accordingly, defects found with these tools are more disruptive and costly to fix. Nonetheless, there has been a lop-sided emphasis in the functionality of the software, even though the functionality is not useful or usable without the necessary non-functional characteristics. This research highlights the sporadic industry acceptance of some popular methods for designing for non-functional requirements and suggests some practical approaches that are applicable for companies that also must consider the demands of schedule and cost.

Biggerstaff and Richter suggest that there are four fundamental subtasks associated with operationalizing the reuse process [1]. They are finding reusable components, understanding these components, modifying these components, and composing components. Each of these sub-problems can be re-expressed as a knowledge acquisition sub-problem relative to producing a new representation for the components that make them more suitable for future reuse. In this paper, we express the first two subtasks for the software reuse activity, as described by Biggerstaff and Richter, as a problem in Machine Learning. From this perspective, the goal of software reuse is to learn to recognize reusable software in terms of code structure, run-time behavior, and functional specification. The Partial Metrics (PM) System supports the acquisition of reusable software at three different levels of granularity: the system level, the procedural level, and the code segment level. Here, we describe how the system extracts procedural knowledge from an example Pascal software system that satisfies a set of structural, behavioral, and functional constraints. These constraints are extracted from a set of positive and negative examples using inductive learning techniques. The constraints are expressed quantitatively in terms of various quality models and metrics. The general characteristics of learned constraints that were extracted from a variety of applications libraries are discussed.

On the basis of a detailed analysis, existing terminological interpretations of the concept of "software quality" have been generalized, conclusions are drawn about the correspondence of the terms used to assess the quality of general software in the process of assessing the quality of software of intelligent decision-making systems (IDMS). It has been proved that the quality of the IDMS software is a complex multi-criteria indicator that takes into account not only the performance of the individual software module as a subsystem, but also the causal relationships of the elements of the software system itself. The main differences in software quality assessment between the functional and formal approaches are shown. The structure of the criterion of guarantor capacity of decision-making systems software has been investigated and conclusions have been drawn on the influence of its main components on the evaluation of IDMS software and on the provision of reliable computing process. On the basis of the analysis of the list of attributes and the quality metric of the IDMS software, it is established that the guarantee is determined by the reliability of the software structure itself and is characterised by the restoration of the functional state after failures or failures. The interrelationship and influence of IDMS software design quality indicators on the characteristics and sub-characteristics of the IDMS software is established, an example of the interrelationship between characteristics (factors) and quality indicators, the method of measuring quality indicators and design processes is given. On the basis of the conducted research, IDMS software denial regimes have been defined and their impact on the decision-making process has been shown. Detailed classes of failures and their influence on compliance of IDMS software with the task of development are shown. It has been shown that the reliability of IDMS is a dynamic concept, manifested in time, and is strongly dependent on the presence / absence of defects in the interaction. A detailed analysis of methods of software quality assurance and control has been carried out, and conclusions have been drawn on the possibility of their application IDMS software. The maturity model of the IDMS software has been improved and validated, and the maturity structure of the software as an indicator of the quality of the IDMS has been introduced.

Production of functional products using local raw materials with a high content of biologically active substances is the main trend in the production of non-alcoholic beverages. In this regard, creation of a technological line that ensures not only the quality of the finished product, but also the safety of the functional properties of the feedstock is of great interest. A computer model of a functional soft drink production line, developed using the MasterSCADA 4D software created by a leading domestic company has been. The model emulates the entire production process including the stage of filling the finished product. It is possible to control a real production line provided that communication with an industrial controller, sensors and actuators is installed and configured. A set of technological equipment has been selected for each production stage, from processing raw materials and on down to functional soft drink packaging. Recommendations have been given for water treatment, including a number of technological processes, such as rough water purification and disinfection. There are instructions for preparing sugar syrup using hot method. The characteristics of the recommended plant for hydrodynamic extraction from plant raw materials has been presented. A factor intensifying the extraction process, in the pulsating action of the extractant between the solid and liquid phases. Production of a functional drink implies using of water as an extractant, so additional methods of intensifying mass transfer processes have been considered in order to increase the percentage of extraction of target components. The use of the effect of ultrasonic, electric, pulse and discrete-pulse fields on raw materials is considered to be the most promising method for the extraction process intensification.

Quality of a software product should be tracked during the software lifecycle right from the architectural phase to its operational phase. Heterogeneous systems consist of several globally distributed components, thus rendering their reliability evaluation more complex with respect to the conventional methods. The objective of our work is to expand the evaluation process for effective reliability analysis by using both white box and black box approaches at prototype and at module/component level before the actual development. In this paper the, Black box testing is based on non-functional requirements for early quantitative analysis for the reliability estimation of the application development based on the output results of the prototype development. White box testing is based on inter-component interactions which deal with probabilistic software behavior. It uses an internal perspective of the system to design test cases based on internal structure at requirements and design phases. This paper has been applied for evolution of effective reliability quantification analysis at prototype level of a financial application case study with both non functional test data of software Development Life cycle (SDLC) phases captured from defect consolidation table in the form orthogonal defect classification as well functional requirements at requirement and design phases captured through software architectural modeling paradigms.

The software quality model describes software quality in terms of non-functional requirements. The most well-known and authoritative quality model ISO/IEC 25010, includes 8 related characteristics: functionality, performance, compatibility, usability, reliability, security, maintainability, and portability. The article materials are limited only by the quality of the software in terms of usability characteristics. The characteristic of the usability of the software should include subcharacteristics inherent in the quality of the user interface, on the one hand, as a static object, and on the other hand, subcharacteristics of the process of interaction with the user – human-computer interaction. Existing quality models and usability assessments do not combine the quality elements of the user interface itself and the user experience. The article proposes models of quality and quality assessment of the usability of the software interface of human-computer interaction, which combine the characteristics inherent directly to the user interface and the characteristics of human-computer interaction. Such models are interconnected due to a single nomenclature of subcharacteristics. The model for assessing the quality of software usability consists of two parts and includes many metrics and indicators that correspond to the indicated sub-characteristics. The purpose of the article is to develop a quality model of the usability of the software interface of human-computer interaction and a corresponding model for assessing its quality, which would combine the subcharacteristics of the quality of the user interface and the subcharacteristics of the quality of its interaction with the user. The object of the research is the subcharacteristics of the usability of the software interface of human-computer interaction. The idea of developing the model is based on the results of the analysis of the following standards: ISO / IEC 25010, ISO / IEC 25022, and ISO / IEC 25022. The provisions (subcharacteristics and metrics) of these standards were taken into account when forming the main material of this article. The taxonomy of metrics and indicators was formed by combining metrics from ISO / IEC 25022, ISO / IEC 25023, and proprietary metrics. As a result, this paper proposes a model for the quality of the usability of the software interface of human-computer interaction and a model for assessing the quality of the usability of the software interface of human-computer interaction.

The energy demand of buildings represents in the balance of heat use and heat consumption of energy complex in the Slovak national economy second largest savings potential. Their complex energy demands is the sum of total investment input to ensure thermal protection and annual operational demands of particular energy systems during their lifetime in building. The application of energy systems based on thermal solar systems reduces energy consumption and operating costs of building for support heating and domestic hot water as well as savings of non-renewable fossil fuels. Correctly designed solar energy system depends on many characteristics, i. e. appropriate solar collector area and tank volume, collector tilt and orientation as well as quality of used components. The evaluation of thermal solar system components by calculation software shows how can be the original thermal solar system improved by means of performance. The system performance can be improved of more than 31 % than in given system by changing four thermal solar system parameters such as heat loss coefficient and aperture area of used solar collector, storage tank volume and its height and diameter ratio.

The multi-tenancy architecture allows software-as-a-service applications to serve multiple tenants with a single instance. This is beneficial as it leverages economies of scale. However, it does not cope with the specificities of each tenant and their variability; notably, the variability induced in the required quality levels that differ from a tenant to another. Hence, sharing one single instance hampers the fulfillment of these quality levels for all the tenants and leads to service level agreement violations. In this context, this article proposes a policy-driven middleware that configures the service according to the non-functional requirements of the tenants. The adopted approach combines software product lines engineering and model driven engineering principles. It spans the quality attributes lifecycle, from documenting them to annotating the service components with them as policies, and it enables dynamic configuration according to service level agreements terms of the tenants.

Modern software does not stand alone; it is embedded in complex physical and sociotechnical systems. It relies on computational support from interdependent subsystems as well as non-code resources such as data, communications, sensors, and interactions with humans. Both general-purpose programming languages and mainstream programming language research focus on symbolic notations with well-defined abstractions that are intended for use by professionals to write programs that solve precisely specified problems. There is a strong emphasis on correctness of the resulting programs, preferably by formal reasoning. However, these languages, despite their careful design and formal foundations, address only a modest portion of modern software and only a minority of software developers. Several persistent myths reinforce this focus. These myths express an idealized model of software and software development. They provide a lens for examining modern software and software development practice: highly trained professionals are outnumbered by vernacular developers. Writing new code is dominated by composition of ill-specified software and non-software components. General-purpose languages may be less appropriate for a task than domain-specific languages, and functional correctness is often a less appropriate goal than overall fitness for task. Support for programming to meet a specification is of little help to people who are programming in order to understand their problems. Reasoning about software is challenged by uncertainty and nondeterminism in the execution environment and by the increasingly dominant role of data, especially with the advent of systems that rely on machine learning. The lens of our persistent myths illuminates the dissonance between our idealized view of software development and common practice, which enables us to identify emerging opportunities and challenges for programming language research.

The dissertation solves the current scientific and applied problem of automating the assessment of the initial stages of the software life cycle by developing agentoriented information technology based on an ontological approach, which provides: automation of time-consuming, routine and error-prone task analysis requirements and its almost instantaneous implementation; a hint where the requirements specification needs rework (the user can view the missing attributes and see the areas of the specification that need extra attention, as well as which requirements need to be reworked); providing training for new specification developers, systems engineers, and project managers (using this AOIT helps them to see the mistakes they may make and helps them to recognize these mistakes in the work of others); assistance in developing high quality requirements; assistance in correcting requirements errors where they occur – in the early stages of the software life cycle - before they become more expensive to correct; providing a tool for selecting better specifications of software requirements; free internet access at any time without any registration.

Component-based technology deals with the process of assembling existing software components in an application such that they interact to satisfy a predefined functionality. The success of component-based software depends on system integrator’s ability to select the most suitable software components for their intended application (Leavens and Sitaraman, 2000; Voas and Payne, 2000; Crnkovic et al., 2001). One persistent and largely unaddressed challenge is how the consumers of software components can obtain a meaningful level of trust in the runtime behaviour of software components. The most frequently cited concerns are centered on issues of security and component behaviour (Wallnau, 2004). Certification is a practical, proven means of establishing trust in various sorts of things in other disciplines and is, therefore a natural contender for developing trust in software components. This is only possible if component suppliers have clear and reliable information about their component’s functional and non-functional properties. The component attributes allow system integrator to better classify the components. The reliability of a component-based software system is dependant on the reliability of the components that is made of. Proper search, selection, and evaluation process of components is considered as cornerstone for the development of any effective component-based system (Alexandre, 2010).This chapter defines certain properties of a component, which are helpful during their classification process along with component certification/accreditation process, which further helps component suppliers to issue the guarantee of claimed functional properties and quality attributes. Component certification framework is also discussed to evaluate the quality of software components with the help of component quality model and measurement mechanism.

In many large-scale enterprise information system solutions, process design, data modeling and software component design are performed relatively independently by different people using various tools and methodologies. This usually leads to gaps among business process modeling, component design and data modeling. Currently, these functional or non-functional disconnections are fixed manually, which increases the complexity and decrease the efficiency and quality of development. In this chapter, a pattern-based approach is proposed to bridge the gaps with automatically generated data access components. Data access rules and patterns are applied to optimize these data access components. In addition, the authors present the design of a toolkit that automatically applies these patterns to bridge the gaps to ensure reduced development time, and higher solution quality.

After having described the main characteristics of dependability and fault-tolerance, it is analyzed here in more detail what it means that a program is fault-tolerant and what are the properties expected from a fault-tolerant program. The main objective of this chapter is introducing two sets of design assumptions that shape the way our fault-tolerant software is structured—the system and the fault models. Often misunderstood or underestimated, those models describe • what is expected from the execution environment in order to let our software system function correctly, and • what are the faults that our system is going to consider. Note that a fault-tolerant program shall (try to) tolerate only those faults stated in the fault model, and will be as defenseless against all other faults as any non fault-tolerant program. Together with the system specification, the fault and system models represent the foundation on top of which our computer services are built. It is not surprising that weak foundations often result in failing constructions. What is really surprising is that in so many cases, little or no attention had been given to those important factors in fault-tolerant software engineering. To give an idea of this, three wellknown accidents are described—the Ariane 5 flight 501, Mariner-1 disasters, and the Therac-25 accidents. In each case it is stressed what went wrong, what were the biggest mistakes, and how a careful understanding of fault models and system models would have helped highlighting the path to avoid catastrophic failures that cost considerable amounts of money and even the lives of innocent people. The other important objective of this chapter is introducing the core subject of this book: Software fault-tolerance situated at the level of the application layer. First of all, it is explained why targeting (also) the application layer is not an open option but a mandatory design choice for effective fault-tolerant software engineering. Secondly, given the peculiarities of the application layer, three properties to measure the quality of the methods to achieve fault-tolerant application software are introduced: 1. Separation of design concerns, that is, how good the method is in keeping the functional aspects and the fault-tolerance aspects separated from each other. 2. Syntactical adequacy, namely how versatile the employed method is in including the wider spectrum of fault-tolerance strategies. 3. Adaptability: How good the employed fault-tolerance method is in dealing with the inevitable changes characterizing the system and its run-time environment, including the dynamics of faults that manifest themselves at service time. Finally, this chapter also defines a few fundamental fault-tolerance services, namely watchdog timers, exception handling, transactions, and checkpointingand- rollback.

The evaluation of software is a critical task for corporations that are planning to use OSS components. The amount of OSS available is vast and often its quality is not appropriate to adoption for real business processes. Therefore, companies have to analyze the available solutions and chose the software that meets their functional needs and quality standards. Different Capability Maturity Models (CMM) for software assessment exist, however OSS is characterized by specific features that are not appropriately handled in standard software assessment methodologies.

When engineering complex and distributed software and hardware systems (increasingly used in many sectors, such as manufacturing, aerospace, transportation, communication, energy, and health-care), quality has become a big issue, since failures can have economic consequences and can also endanger human life. Model-based specifications of component-based systems permit to explicitly model the structure and behaviour of components and their integration. In particular Software Architectures (SA) have been advocated as an effective means to produce quality systems. In this chapter by combining different technologies and tools for analysis and development, we propose an architecture-centric model-driven approach to validate required properties and to generate the system code. Functional requirements are elicited and used for identifying expected properties the architecture shall express. The architectural compliance to the properties is formally demonstrated, and the produced architectural model is used to automatically generate Java code. Suitable transformations assure that the code is conforming to both structural and behavioural SA constraints. This chapter describes the process and discusses how some existing tools and languages can be exploited to support the approach.

Reuse helps to decrease development time, code errors, and code units. Therefore, it serves to improve quality and productivity frameworks in software development. The question is not HOW to make the code reusable, but WHICH amount of software components would be most beneficial, that is, cost-effective in terms of reuse, and WHAT method should be used to decide whether to make a component reusable or not. If we had unlimited time and resources, we could write any code unit in a reusable way. In other words, its reusability would be 100%. However, in real life, resources are limited and there are clear deadlines to be met. Given these constraints, decisions regarding reusability are not always straightforward. The current research focuses on decision-making rules for investing in reuse frameworks. It attempts to determine the parameters, which should be taken into account in decisions relating to degrees of reusability. Two new models are presented for decision-making relating to reusability: (i) a restricted model and (ii) a non-restricted model. Decisions made by using these models are then analyzed and discussed.

The chapter covers avatar-based control for neuron natural and artificial technology platform used in automated testing system for quality control of student training. The chapter proposes the concept of creating an automated software system for monitoring student knowledge in the learning process. It is proven that for successful students to learn remotely, it is necessary to develop a knowledge assessment system that takes into account various learning features, as well as the individual characteristics of the student. The block structure of an automated software system is presented and its elements are discussed in relation to the educational process. The role of the teacher in the virtual learning system is discussed and an algorithm of the learning process in this system is presented.

Despite decades of research, healthcare information systems have been characterised by cost over-runs, poor specifications and lack of user uptake. A new approach is required which provides organisations with a reason to invest in this type of software. W Edwards Deming argues that quality is not an entity but derives from using feedback, iteratively to seek improvement to processes, in order to increase productivity and to make better use of resources. The authors propose that supporting this form of quality assurance (QA) using information systems (IS) has the potential to deliver a return on investment. An object-oriented analysis, where healthcare is viewed as the delivery of interdependent processes to which Deming’s form of QA is applied, results in a class model of data types that has some useful characteristics. It is able to store data about medical and nonmedical events; to save descriptions of procedures and to represent the QA process itself. With software based on the model, organisations will have a memory of previous attempts at making improvements as well as data about feedback from patients and staff to drive future change. A critical research in information systems (CRIS) analysis of this model proposes a number of criticisms deriving from theories about rationality; concepts of technology; politics and hidden agendas, as well as the social consequences of technology. The view that QA is a standardised, ongoing conversation about the important characteristics of a process pre-empts many of these counter arguments. The CRIS critique also highlights the need to ensure that development is in harmony with the needs of the many stakeholders in healthcare IS. These concepts lead to new directions in healthcare IS research. The class model needs to be tested against clinical and non-clinical use-cases for its viability not only as support for QA but also as an electronic patient record. A standard terminology is required for processes and for how objects from the model should be used to represent them. The model predicts that user interfaces will have to collect more detailed data than hitherto. Also use of the software should be tested in controlled trials to demonstrate whether the required improvements in quality not only benefit the patient but also the organisations managing their care.

Although a wide range of sophisticated Qualitative Spatial and Temporal Reasoning (QSTR) formalisms have now been developed, there are relatively few applications that apply these commonsense methods. To address this problem, the authors of this chapter developed methodologies that support QSTR application design. They established a theoretical foundation for QSTR applications that includes the roles of application designers and users. The authors adapted formal software requirements that allow a designer to specify the customer’s operational requirements and the functional requirements of a QSTR application. The chapter presents design patterns for organising the components of QSTR applications, and a methodology for defining high-level neighbourhoods that are derived from the system structure. Finally, the authors develop a methodology for QSTR application validation by defining a complexity metric called H-complexity that is used in test coverage analysis for assessing the quality of unit and integration test sets.

Software architectures can be used as a vehicle to improve the study of quality properties in the early stages of development. This paper proposes an automatic mapping between the design of architectural components and the specification of DEVS atomic models with aims to evaluate all-purpose quality metrics. Then, we use the functional description of architectural components (that address functional requirements) to estimate the architecture adjustment to non-functional requirements. The guidelines for structuring the simulation models are defined starting from the design of high-level components. To illustrate the proposal, web-based architecture is used as proof of concepts.

Using a Variable Frequency Drive, 15kWh battery pack, and Active Front End control, Colorado State University has designed and built a real-world functional test stand to study the effects of attaching a battery power pack to the grid for grid stabilization. This paper describes the design, analysis, and construction of the Grid Attached Storage simulation laboratory. An in-depth discussion of the design, selection and specifications of components including the LCL filter, transformer, grid attachment, line synchronization card, software control, and safety measurements is discussed. The dynamics and control of grid-attached storage can be investigated using this lab. Battery temperatures, charging/discharging cycles, and battery degradation can also be better understood with the use of this system. Second life batteries can be used as well to investigate their characteristics, economical benefits, and quality of use. Using grid interaction, the batteries can work in a variety of ways including: frequency regulation, V2G simulation of opportunity charging, and renewable energy smoothing.

In this paper, we explore the topic of Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) 3D-printing. This is a low-cost additive manufacturing technology which is typically embodied in consumer-grade desktop 3D printers capable of producing useful parts, structures, and mechanical assemblies. The primary goal of our investigation is to produce an understanding of this process which can be employed to produce high-quality, functional engineered parts and prototypes. By developing this understanding, we create a resource which may be turned to by both researchers in the field of manufacturing science, and industrial professionals who are either considering the use of FFF-enabled technologies such as 3D printing, or those who have already entered production and are optimizing their fabrication process. In order to paint a cohesive picture for these readers, we examine several topic areas. We begin with an overview of the FFF process, its key hardware and software components, and the interrelationships between these components and the designer. With this basis, we then proceed to outline a set of design principles which facilitate the production of high quality printed parts, and discuss the selection of appropriate materials. Following naturally from this, we turn to the question of feedstock materials for FFF, and give advice for their selection and use. We then turn to the subject of the as-printed properties of FFF parts and the strong non-isotropic response that they exhibit. We discuss the root causes of this behavior and means by which its deleterious effects may be mitigated. We conclude by discussing a mixed numerical/experimental technique which we believe will enable the accurate characterization of FFF parts and structures, and greatly enhance the utility of this additive manufacturing technology. By formalizing and discussing these topics, we hope to motivate and enable the serious use of low-cost FFF 3D printing for both research and industrial applications.

Component-Based Software Engineering (CBSE) has shown significant prospects in rapid production of large software systems with enhanced quality, and emphasis on decomposition of the engineered systems into functional or logical components with well-defined interfaces used for communication across the components. In this paper, a series of metrics proposed by various researchers have been analyzed, evaluated and benchmarked using several large-scale publicly available software systems. A systematic analysis of the values for various metrics has been carried out and several key inferences have been drawn from them. A number of useful conclusions have been drawn from various metrics evaluations, which include inferences on complexity, reusability, testability, modularity and stability of the underlying components. The inferences are argued to be beneficial for CBSE-based software development, integration and maintenance.

Whether to repair or replace gas turbine components has always been an issue. The case for repair has always been viewed with skepticism, especially when those parts to be repaired must be done by hand, as manual repair methods can result in high levels of scrap and non-conformance. Hand grinding, blending and polishing is still frequently found in many Gas Turbine (GT) components, but in this age of high technology, why is this the case? The problem lies with the fact that individual blades and vanes that make up full engine sets are not geometrically identical and do not lend themselves to being machined, blended or polished by standard Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) machining technology. This is a problem for both the repair and manufacture sectors. Key Questions: • Where does this geometric variability come from and what does this mean in practice? • As the industry strives for more efficient engines blades and vanes have become increasingly complex. How does this impact the repair sector? • What are the key issues involved and how can we get around them? • What can repairers do to reduce their scrap rates and increase their output volume and quality? Software-based machining strategies are explored as an alternative to manual processes in the repair of GT components. With ever-increasing competition and reduced turnaround times, decisions to invest in technology are usually driven by a combination of technical, quality, economic and health & safety requirements.

In the automotive industry it is of great importance to manage the impact of part and assembly variation as it affects aesthetical aspects of the final Perceived Quality, such as the appearance of flush, parallelism and gaps in split-lines. By using a CAT (Computer Aided Tolerancing) software simulating tolerances, in combination with a high-end visualization tool, evaluations are made to judge a predicted outcome of the final Perceived Quality. When a new styling concept needs to be evaluated the data used for analysis and visualization will be less mature and the fact that several vehicle components are non-rigid will further complicate the realization of non-nominal visualization. The deformation behavior of non-rigid components is dependent on several parameters such as part shape, position of reference points, flanges, reinforcements etc. Such information is most likely not available when evaluating a new styling concept, represented only by a surface skin. This paper discusses the possibility to use this limited information, defined as styling data, as a basis when performing non-nominal visualization and evaluation of Perceived Quality based on deformable non-rigid components. The insufficient information is supplemented by collecting and comparing data from prior projects to enable non-rigid behavior prediction of components as such.

The flow field characteristics of a two-pass cooling system with an engine-similar lay-out have been investigated experimentally using the non-intrusive Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). It consists of a trapezoidal inlet duct, a nearly rectangular outlet duct, and a sharp 180 degree turn. The system has been investigated with smooth and ribbed walls. Ribs are applied on two opposite walls in a symmetric orientation inclined with an angle of 45 degrees to the main flow direction. The applied rib lay-out is well-proved and optimized with respect to heat transfer improvement versus pressure drop penalty. The system rotates about an axis orthogonal to its centreline. The configuration was analyzed with the planar two-component PIV technique (2C PIV), which is capable of obtaining complete maps of the instantaneous as well as the averaged flow field even at high levels of turbulence, which are typically found in sharp turns, in ribbed ducts and, especially, in rotating ducts. In the past, slip between motor and channel rotation causes additional not negligible uncertainties during PIV measurements due to unstable image position. These were caused by the working principle of the standard programmable sequencer unit used in combination with unsteady variations of the rotation speed. Therefore, a new sequencer was developed using FPGA-based hardware and software components from National Instruments which revealed a significant increase of the stability of the image position. Furthermore, general enhancements of the operability of the PIV system were achieved. The presented investigations of the secondary flow were conducted in stationary and, with the new sequencer technique applied, in rotating mode. Especially in the bend region vortices with high local turbulence were found. The ribs also change the fluid motion as desired by generating additional vortices impinging the leading edge of the first pass. The flow is turbulent and isothermal, no buoyancy forces are active. The flow was investigated at Reynolds number of Re = 50,000, based on the reference length d (see Fig. 3). The rotation number is Ro = 0 (non-rotating) and 0.1. Engine relevant rotation numbers are in order of 0.1 and higher. A reconstruction of some test rig components, especially the model mounting, has become necessary to reach higher values of the rotational speed compared to previous investigations like in Elfert [2008]. This investigation is aimed to analyze the complex flow phenomena caused by the interaction of several vortices, generated by rotation, flow turning or inclined wall ribs. The flow maps obtained with PIV are of good quality and high spatial resolution and therefore provide a test case for the development and validation of numerical flow simulation tools with special regard to prediction of flow turbulence under rotational flow regime as typical for turbomachinery. Future work will include the investigation of buoyancy effects to the rotational flow. This implicates wall heating which result from the heater glass in order to provide transparent models.

Purpose – The research focuses on analysing the service quality in tourist accommodation in households. The aim of this paper is to determine whether there are statistically significant differences in the perception of quality service (technical and functional quality aspect), with emphasis on quality improvement. Methodology – The research was based on a structured questionnaire, which was carried out during the summer months of 2020, on a sample of 168 tourists who stayed in tourist accommodation in households. According to the type of data obtained, statistical differences between multiple groups are examined using nonparametric Kruskal-Wallis H Test in IBM SPSS Statistic software. Findings – The results indicate that there are statistically significant differences in the perception of service quality with regard to socio-demographic characteristics of the respondents. Foreign guests visiting Croatia and staying in tourist accommodation in households rate the quality of service at a higher rate compared to domestic guests. Regarding the differences based on qualification levels and age, individuals with university degrees, and those in the age group 60-77 tend to give statistically significantly higher ratings to quality elements. Contribution – The scientific contribution of the research is seen in widening the knowledge on service quality as well as the development of a measuring instrument for measuring service quality taking in to account tourist accommodation in households. Its practical contribution can be seen in the comparison of service quality dimensions, taking into account socio - demographic characteristics of respondents, based on which improvement of quality can be made in this segment of accommodation offer.

Many studies on the assembly of non-rigid parts suggest that the part variation affects the assembly dimensional quality. However, little is known about how the detailed microstructure of part variation influences the assembly dimensional quality. In this paper, a new method based on the finite element method (FEM) and fractal geometry is proposed to explore the influence of the part variation microstructure on the assembly dimensional variation. In the new method, a special fractal function, the Weierstrass-Mandelbrot (W-M) function, is used to extract and represent the characteristics of the part variation microstructure. FEM is applied to analyze the deformation of non-rigid parts by integrating the part variation microstructure. The contribution of the detailed part variation to the final assembly deformation is obtained by the influence coefficients method. The proposed method is implemented by using commercial software tools, ANSYS and Matlab. The proposed method is illustrated through a case study on an assembly of two flat sheet metal parts. This new approach should benefit high precision assemblies.
