Through a field experiment at a seafood-processing plant, I examine how working alongside friends affects employee productivity and how this effect is heterogeneous with respect to an employee’s personality. This paper presents two main findings. First, worker productivity declines when a friend is close enough to socialize with. Second, workers who are higher on the conscientiousness scale show smaller productivity declines when working alongside a friend. Estimates suggest that a median worker is willing to pay 4.5 percent of her wage to work next to friends. (JEL C93, J24, J28, J31, L66, O15, P23)

The role of fibronectin (FN) in tumorigenesis and malignant progression has been highly controversial. Cancerous FN plays a tumor-suppressive role, whereas it is pro-metastatic and associated with poor prognosis. Interestingly, FN matrix deposited in the tumor microenvironments (TMEs) promotes tumor progression but is paradoxically related to a better prognosis. Here, we justify how FN impacts tumor transformation and subsequently metastatic progression. Next, we try to reconcile and rationalize the seemingly conflicting roles of FN in cancer and TMEs. Finally, we propose future perspectives for potential FN-based therapeutic strategies.

AbstractWe present some new and interesting results on the complementarity between asteroseismology and interferometry, the detection of non-radial pulsations in massive stars and the possibility for evidencing differential rotation on the surface of Bn stars. We also discuss the curretn interferometric facilities, namely the Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI)/AMBER, VLTI/MIDI, VLTI/PIONIER within the European Southern Observatory (ESO) context and the Center for High Angular Resolution Astronomy (CHARA) array with their current limitations. The forthcoming second-generation VLTI instruments GRAVITY and MATISSE are presented as well as the FRIEND prototype in the visible spectral domain and an update of the Navy Precision Optical Interferometer (NPOI). A conclusion is presented with a special emphasis on the foreseen difficulties for a third generation of interferometric instruments within the (budget limited) Extremely Large Telescope framework and the need for strong science cases to push a future visible beam combiner.

Background. This study examined how risk perceptions and social norms around e-cigarettes are associated with susceptibility (i.e., openness to using the product in the next 12 months) of e-cigarettes and smoking among adolescents. Methods. We analyzed data from a 2016 representative survey of 8,718 middle school students in Mexico. The study sample was restricted to students who had tried neither e-cigarettes nor cigarettes, ( N = 4471). Students reported on the risks of e-cigarettes compared with those of cigarettes, and product-specific norms were measured by assessing current use by family members, at least one close friend, and, for e-cigarettes, by perceived societal acceptability of use (i.e., acceptability among people in general). Adjusted prevalence ratios (APR) were estimated using generalized estimating equation models that regressed e-cigarette societal acceptability on study variables. Adjusted generalized estimating equation models also regressed susceptibility for each product on study variables. Results. Susceptibility to both e-cigarettes and smoking was higher among students who reported that their family and friends used only cigarettes or both products when compared with students whose family and friends did not use either of these products. Friend use of e-cigarettes was associated with e-cigarette susceptibility (APR = 1.33) but not smoking susceptibility. Students who perceived that e-cigarettes were less risky than smoking were more susceptible to e-cigarette use (APR = 1.45). The association between e-cigarette susceptibility and friend or family use was not mediated by societal acceptability. Conclusions. E-cigarette use among family and peers appears associated with susceptibility to use e-cigarettes in a way that is similar to the patterns found for cigarettes. However, the influences appear somewhat specific to the type of product that network members use.

A colleague who heard these remarks delivered orally reminded me of the old saying that the next best thing to having a noble friend is to have a noble enemy, but I don't think it applies here. The movie, which shows the lives of modern children who study without friends, has gained sympathy from the public from the beginning. A success-oriented society makes children friendless. The animation film <The Little Prince> is an epic that has the value of overcoming reality by meeting the grandfather who tells the story of the little prince, and the thoughts of the girl and the mother change.

Forty-eight introductory psychology students (28 females, 20 males) and their same-sex best friends participated in this study. Based upon a question from the Adult Attachment Interview (George, Kaplan, & Main, 1996), participants wrote five adjectives that described their childhood relationships with each parent. For the four most descriptive adjectives (two for mothers and two for fathers), they wrote about childhood incidents that illustrated those adjectives. Adjectives were evaluated for how positively participants described their relationships with mothers and with fathers; incidents were evaluated for how loving, rejecting, and neglectful mothers and fathers appeared to have been during childhood. Next, best friend pairs participated in a series of videotaped conversation tasks where they discussed unresolved problems. Those who recalled more loving mothers were better able to disclose intimate personal information to their friends and to clearly express their feelings about their problems.Those who recalled more neglectful mothers, on the other hand, were more likely to exhibit heightened emotionality when discussing their problems. Implications for future research are discussed.

Highly dynamic epigenetic signaling is influenced mainly by (micro)environmental stimuli and genetic factors. The exact mechanisms affecting particular epigenomic patterns differ dependently on the context. In the current review, we focus on the causes and effects of the dynamic signatures of the human epigenome as evaluated with the high-throughput profiling data and single-gene approaches. We will discuss three different aspects of phenotypic outcomes occurring as a consequence of epigenetics interplaying with genotype and environment. The first issue is related to the cases of environmental impacts on epigenetic profile, and its adverse and advantageous effects related to human health and evolutionary adaptation. The next topic will present a model of the interwoven co-evolution of genetic and epigenetic patterns exemplified with transposable elements (TEs) and their epigenetic repressors Krüppel-associated box zinc finger proteins (KRAB–ZNFs). The third aspect concentrates on the mitosis-based microevolution that takes place during carcinogenesis, leading to clonal diversity and expansion of tumor cells. The whole picture of epigenome plasticity and its role in distinct biological processes is still incomplete. However, accumulating data define epigenomic dynamics as an essential co-factor driving adaptation at the cellular and inter-species levels with a benefit or disadvantage to the host.

Abstract Objective Assess the effect of ostracism and social connection-related activities on adolescents' motivation to eat and their energy intake. Methods Participants (n = 103;M age = 13.6 years) were either ostracized or included when playing a computer game, Cyberball. Next, they wrote about their friend (social-connection), watched television (distraction), or completed Sudoku puzzles (cognitive-load), and then completed a task to earn points toward snack food and/or socializing. Afterwards, participants were given access to food and social activities. Results Ostracized adolescents were more motivated to earn food than adolescents who were in the included/control condition. Follow-up contrasts indicated that ostracized adolescents who wrote about friends worked more for food points and consumed more food than other adolescents. Conclusion Results suggest that social connection-related activities following ostracism may further deplete self-regulatory resources, thereby resulting in increased unhealthy food patterns. Study limitations as well as clinical implications of these findings are discussed.

Is there a punishment for violating the natural law? This important question has been neglected in the scholarship on Thomistic natural law theory. I show that there is a three-fold punishment proper to the natural law; the remorse of conscience, the inability to be a friend to oneself, and the inability to be a friend to another work in concert to provide a natural penalty for moral wrongdoing. In order to establish these points, I first analyze sources of St. Thomas Aquinas’s natural law theory by discussing St. Augustine’s notion of law and fundamental ideas in Aristotle’s political philosophy. Next, I show how Aquinas unites aspects of Augustinian and Aristotelian thought in his treatment of natural law and thereby provides a framework for answering our question. Finally, I turn to Plato’s Gorgias and to Aristotle’s discussion of self-love in order to integrate these ideas with Aquinas’s natural law theory.

At first, she thinks that the police are taking her report seriously, but the investigation does not seem to move forward. The next thing she knows, they accuse her of lying and ultimately file charges against her. You and your friend are in shock; this outcome never entered your minds. This nightmare may seem inconceivable, but it has in fact occurred repeatedly in both the United States and Britain—countries that are typically lauded for their high levels of gender equality. In Britain, where perverting the course of justice is a serious crime with a potential term of life in prison, many rape complainants have been sent to prison for two and three year terms. This five-part Article analyzes this problem and sets out recommendations for legal reform.

The purpose of this study is to describe the effectiveness of the role of librarians as friends in finding library sources for research. The design is a mixed method with the Triangulation Design procedure: Validating Quantitative Data Model. In this model, researchers will collect quantitative data and qualitative data. The next stage is to carry out further analysis by validating the results of quantitative analysis using qualitative results. The population in the study were all lecturers at Lambung Mangkurat University. The sample to determine the effectiveness of the role of librarians in research, namely 100 lecturers. Data were collected by filling out a questionnaire to answer all problem formulations. Also supported by interviewing lecturers to validate the results of filling out a questionnaire about the role of the librarian as a place to find library sources for research. The results of this study is that 54.49% of researchers agree that librarians are effective as friends in finding sources of literature for research. 33.91% of researchers strongly agree. While a small proportion of researchers, namely 0.87% and 0.58%, respectively, stated that they disagreed and disagreed with the statement. The conclusion of this research was the librarian's role has been effective as a friend in finding library resources for research

AbstractThe Bedouin are Muslim Arabs who have inhabited the Negev desert region of Israel under nomadic and seminomadic conditions for centuries. Today, the majority are living in urban settings with high levels of unemployment, poverty, and problem behaviour. Limited research exists of Bedouin youth, specifically their smoking attitudes and behaviour. This study examined 293 male and female high school-age youth with the WHO-CDC Global Youth Tobacco Survey instrument. Chi square and regression analyses were performed. Parent smoking behaviour, smoking if offered a cigarette, likelihood of smoking during the next 12 months and 5 years, and smoking behaviour among friends are significant factors that influence smoking regardless of gender status. Regression analysis shows cigarette use is influenced by gender status, parent(s) smoking behaviour, smoking behaviour among friends, being offered a cigarette by a friend, and the perception of males who smoke as being a positive social image. Smoking is a public health problem and cessation interventions are needed for Bedouin youth. Additional research with practical implications should focus on the high rate of tobacco use among males, the relation between psychosocial factors and smoking behaviour in urban and rural settings and the impact of formal education and community-based activities on smoking prevention and cessation.

Even when a user wishes to send a picture to a friend located next to the user, current wireless data transfer techniques usually demand several steps requiring inconvenient user involvement, such as manipulation of tiny buttons on a small touch screen. This paper presents ‘Cocktail’, a new gesture-based mobile interaction system that exploits gestures employed by bartenders for easy data sharing between co-located users. In our system, users can pour (transfer) multimedia data in their mobile devices to other friends’ devices in a manner akin to a bartender pouring a drink into a glass. Cocktail also provides an intuitive way of creating new content by mixing existing data with a shaking gesture. For example, users can make music videos with their favorite music and pictures in the mobile phone by selecting them and shaking the mobile phone. The authors have implemented a prototype of Cocktail with commercial smart phones and evaluated its usability via user studies.

The paper again tries to throw light on the facts of aftercare services, medical facilities and meeting with family provided in jails during Pandemic. This causes positive reinforcement, the more time you spend on a particular topic, the more you will be presented which results in addictive behavior.ConclusionsIt is known that social media addiction is prevalent, and it affects brain like drug and alcohol addiction. This documentary provided technological insight into this type of behavior. Though social media has its pros, it has numerous cons despite being used for right intentions. The study discusses the development of Raya’s trust issue in the movie. The qualitative method is applied to analyze the data in this study. The result shows that the protagonist in the film suffers from trust issues. There are two reasons to trigger her trust issue. T. Her friend betrays her. Her friend and her people try to steal her village’s gem. This hurt the protagonist. This protagonist makes her start hard to trust anyone else. Next is trauma. Losing her village, Kumandra leaves her traumatic. She begins to show signs of trust issues. Some signs of her trust issue are overprotective toward Sisu, her beloved dragon, being wary, and keeping distance from others. The protagonist expresses such characters. She fears something terrible which can happen to Sisu. Therefore, she never trusts other people around her. She also distances herself from other people because of wariness. Sisu sees this. Sisu thinks that such a trust issue will make Raya in trouble. Finally, Sisu tries hard to teach Raya to trust other people. They eventually succeed in building Raya’s trust in others, and then a magical work happens as the impact of her trust.

In recent years consumers are taking more interest in their health care, including having interest in the prescription drugs they take. This research examined people's beliefs and perceptions about using nine sources of prescription drug information. The sources investigated were: (a) physician, (b) pharmacist, (c) family or friend, (d) manufacturer's web site, (e) second-party web sites, (f) medical reference book, (g) manufacturer's consumer phone number, (h) print ads, and (i) television ads. Two hundred thirteen persons were asked to make ratings of these sources according to (1) the likelihood that they would use each source, (2) perceived ease of use to obtain information from each source, and (3) how complete the information would be in providing prescription drug information. The results indicate that the pharmacist and physician sources were in general given significantly higher ratings across all of three dimensions than all the other sources. The two next highly rated sources were family or friend and manufacturer's web site. Television and print ads were rated the lowest among all of the sources. Implications of these results are discussed with emphasis on the Internet as a growing source of prescription drug information.

Here he provides the next instalment of his story.Paul is placed, at short notice and without his consent, in a hostel for young people with mental health problems in a south coast city. He tries to form friendships but the young man to whom he is drawn to both as a friend and as a potential romance cuts his wrists one evening in the bath, and then absconds about 48 hours later. Paul is deeply traumatised both by the blood and danger of the para-suicide but also by the sudden disappearance of his friend. His psychological state deteriorates leading to hospital admissions. Again he understands this as ‘trying to get his medication right’, but his suspicion about the ineffectiveness of his drugs begins to grow. The symptoms of trauma (night terror, lack of sleep, obsessing about G, fear of the darkness) are not recognised as psychological in nature, only as symptoms of a ‘mental illness’.

I met Miki Crespi when I interviewed for the contract ethnographer position in the National Park Service (NPS) Ethnography Program in April of 1996. It was a tremendous opportunity as I finished my graduate work. Over the next four years, with Miki's guidance, I cultivated my skills as a professional anthropologist. Miki saw my potential and helped me find it. To me she was a mentor, friend, colleague, critic, and greatest supporter, often a second Mom. Miki had two great loves, the NPS Ethnography Program and anthropology. The Ethnography Program was her child; she gave birth to it nurtured it, had hoped to see it into its adulthood.

Giving is often characterized by the conflicting decision to give up something of value to benefit others. Recent evidence indicated that giving is highly context-dependent. To unravel the neural correlates of social context, in this study, young adults ( n = 32) performed a novel giving fMRI paradigm, in which they divided coins between self and known (friends) or unknown (unfamiliar) others. A second manipulation included presence of others; giving decisions were made with an audience or anonymously. Results showed that participants gave more coins to a friend than to an unfamiliar other and generally gave more in the presence of an audience. On a neural level, medial prefrontal cortex and the right insula were most active for relatively generous decisions. These findings possibly reflect that aversion of norm deviation or fairness concerns drive differences in the frequency of giving. Next, activation in separate subregions of the TPJ-IPL (i.e., a region that comprises the TPJ and inferior parietal lobule) was found for target and audience contexts. Overall, our findings suggest that donation size and social contextual information are processed in separable brain regions and that TPJ-IPL plays an important role in balancing self- and other-oriented motives related to the social context.

Recently, social networks have shown huge potential in terms of collaborative web services and the study of peer influence as a result of the massive amount of data, datasets, and interrelations generated. These interrelations cannot guarantee the success of online social networks without ensuring the existence of trust between nodes. Detecting influential nodes improves collaborative filtering (CF) recommendations in which nodes with the highest influential capability are most likely to be the source of recommendations. Although CF-based recommendation systems are the most widely used approach for implementing recommender systems, this approach ignores the mutual trust between users. In this paper, a trust-based algorithm (TBA) is introduced to detect influential spreaders in social networks efficiently. In particular, the proposed TBA estimates the influence that each node has on the other connected nodes as well as on the whole network. Next, a Friend-of-Friend recommendation (FoF-SocialI) algorithm is addressed to detect the influence of social ties in the recommendation process. Finally, experimental results, performed on three large scale location-based social networks, namely, Brightkite, Gowalla, and Weeplaces, to test the efficiency of the proposed algorithm, are presented. The conducted experiments show a remarkable enhancement in predicting and recommending locations in various social networks.

Background: Little has been published on the sources of medications used in suicide by self-poisoning. Aims: To examine data on self-poisoning occurring through the use of medications returned to the next of kin after the death of a family member or friend (”returned medication”) and to examine public policies relevant to this issue. Method: A review of charts at the Office of the Chief Coroner of Ontario for deaths by self-poisoning suicide in the City of Toronto occurring between 1998 and 2010 was conducted. Information regarding the source of medication used in self-poisoning was extracted. Federal, provincial, and local policies were also examined to determine whether there are guidelines governing returning medication to next of kin. Results: Of 567 suicide deaths by self-poisoning in Toronto over 13 years, there were eight cases in which returned medication was used in suicide by self-poisoning. No policies prohibiting this type of medication return were identified. Conclusion: Suicide by self-poisoning using returned medications is an important consideration that may not yet be fully appreciated, and has relevance for suicide prevention policies.

Abstract The COVID-19 pandemic has challenged the physical and mental health of older adults, yet it is unknown how much older adults worry about their own exposure. As older adults are at increased risk for severe complications from COVID-19, understanding patterns of worry may inform public health guidelines and interventions for this age group. We investigated older adults’ worry about COVID-19 in the early months of the pandemic and associations with familial/friend’s diagnosis or disease symptoms. Data comes from the baseline (April/May 2020), one-month, and two-month follow-up surveys from the COVID-19 Coping Study, a national longitudinal cohort study of US adults aged ≥55. We used linear regression models to investigate the association between self-reported familial/friend diagnosis or symptoms with pandemic worry, accounting for demographic factors and individual diagnosis or experience of COVID-19 symptoms. Participants (Baseline=4379, 1 month= 2553, 2 month=2682) were 67 years old on average, 72% were female, 5.7% were non-White, and 80.5% had a college degree. At baseline, 26.6% of participants had friends or family who had been diagnosed or experienced symptoms of COVID-19. Having friends or family diagnosed or with symptoms of COVID-19 (B=0.08, SE=0.04, p<.05), being female (B=0.42, SE=0.03, p<.001), and having higher educational attainment (B=0.06, SE=0.02, p<.001) were significantly associated with greater worry about COVID-19. These associations were consistent over 3 months. Understanding if worry about the pandemic correlates with following public health guidelines is a key next step so intervention strategies can prioritize older adults and their social networks.

This past February I spent a bracing weekend with two feminist pioneers in their own fields. Joan Huber is an old friend and early mentor, Dean of Social and Behavioral Sciences at Ohio State, and a well-published feminist sociologist. Susan Gubar, my best friend at Indiana University for more than a decade, is a distinguished literary critic and co-author of landmark books like The Madwoman in the Attic, and The Norton Anthology of Literature by Women. Both have changed the shape of their respective disciplines with their work on women and so carry impeccable feminist credentials. Susan and I went to Columbus to help Joan prepare for her March debate with Carol Gilligan.Since I grew up next to Joan as a teenager, weekends with her are always wonderful for me because they combine all the comforts of home with all the things I could never do while growing up. When I go to Joan's house I eat wonderful meals, drink too much, abandon all my resolutions about smoking, stay up too late, and engage in fabulous conversation. Adding Susan to this cluster of stimulants tripled the pleasure, and the fact that it took us hours to get there and forced us to reread Gilligan did not dampen the occasion. I looked forward to the visit and secretly hoped that the conversation would do something to renew my flagging feminist spirit.

Internet of Things (IoT) has been at the center of attention among researchers for the last two decades. Their aim was to convert each real-world object into a virtual object. Recently, a new idea of integrating the Social Networking concept into the Internet of Things has merged and is gaining popularity and attention in the research society due to its vast and flexible nature. It comprises of the potential to provide a platform for innovative applications and network services with efficient and effective manners. In this paper, we provide the sustenance for the Social Internet of Things (SIoT) paradigm to jump to the next level. Currently, the SIoT technique has been proven to be efficient, but heterogeneous smart devices are growing exponentially. This can develop a problematic scenario while searching for the right objects or services from billions of devices. Small world phenomena have revealed some interesting facts and motivated many researchers to find the hidden links between acquaintances in order to reach someone across the world. The contribution of this research is to integrate the SIoT paradigm with the small world concept. By integrating the small world properties in SIoT smart devices, we empower the Smart Social Agent (SSA). The Smart Social Agent ensures the finding of appropriate friends (i.e., the IoT devices used by our friend circle) and services that are required by the user, without human intervention. The Smart Social Agent can be any smart device in SIoTs, e.g., mobile phones.
