To get access to unbiased, accurate, objective information is a vital necessity in present-day society. From this perspective, the role of mass media can hardly be overestimated. It is common knowledge that there are different types of mass media: print media (newspapers, magazines), their electronic version (in the Internet) as well as radio and television. The newspaper as a form of the mass media is known for several ages. However, the investigation of the language in newspapers has started only in the mid-20th century. The principles of creating and analyzing newspaper headlines have not been widely explored. Some features of newspaper style are considered in this article

AbstractDuring the nineteenth-century gold rush era, Chinese gold miners arrived spontaneously in California and, later, were invited in to work the Otago goldfields in New Zealand. This article considers how the initial arrival of Chinese in those areas was represented in two major newspapers of the time, the Daily Alta California and the Otago Witness. Both newspapers initially favored Chinese immigration, due to the economic benefits that accrued and the generally tolerant outlook of the newspapers' editors. The structure of the papers' coverage differed, however, reflecting the differing historical circumstances of California and Otago. Both papers gave little space to reporting Chinese in their own voices. The newspapers editors played the crucial role in shaping each newspaper's coverage over time. The editor of the Witness remained at the helm of his newspaper throughout the survey period and his newspaper consequently did not waver in its support of the Chinese. The editor of the Alta, by contrast, died toward the end of the survey period and his newspaper subsequently descended into racist, anti-Chinese rhetoric.

Nowadays, the global newspapers market is considered to be in deep crisis as shown by the decrease in circulations, narrowing of the distribution areas, and the advertising market capacity decrease. At the same time, the quality newspapers that cover social and political issues, (e.g. The New York Times) stay very influential and effective in terms of financial indicators. The determination of factors that allow such newspapers to operate effectively in conditions of market decrease is an important task for both researchers and actors of media space. The paper herein is aimed at discovering of such factors with the use of the studies of The New York Times as the most influential newspaper in the US. The subject is studied with the use of researches on newspaper’s genesis and Adolph Ochs’s influence on setting the factors that have been supporting the newspaper effective operations so far. The biographical and ideographical approaches are used to determine the basics that Adolph Ochs used to reform the newspaper in XIX century. The results herein show that Ochs used the business-oriented approach for the newspaper: he used the popular newspapers optimization methods for the quality press (lowered the retail price, increased the advertising space, increased the size of advertisements, and optimized the delivery methods) but aimed at intellectuals as a main target audience. Ochs showed that the use of appropriate informational and economical politics allows the newspaper to be successful on informational market since US society demanded for the quality journalistic. The understanding of the development strategy of one of the leading newspaper that remains successful in modern conditions of media space transformation is beneficial not only for the building of competition practice but for the modernization of local and national segments of newspaper industry. The paper’s results may be used for adjusting the strategies of existing media and for the comparison of the basics specified herein with the basics of other quality newspapers.

The purpose of this article is to define the artistic and extraliterary features of the literary section of one of the first and most significant private newspapers of Ural Region at the turn of the twentieth century. The conclusions of the article are based on the genre attribution of works published in the newspaper (a poetic legend, feuilleton, soldier’s tale), the correlation of these works with the sociocultural and geographical contexts, and the peculiarities of the authors’ biographies. The article notes an attempt to correlate heterogeneous phenomena in the literary section made by the editorial board of the newspaper. It is important because of the peculiarities of the newspaper’s circulation at that time and the awareness of the geographical position of the Urals as a “middle” region. In the newspaper, there are themes, plots, genres of works of Western European literature and the East, the fate of authors, actively moving to the east (Siberia, the Far East) and to the west, newspaper, and literary texts proper. The editorial policy for Ural was formed along the lines of the coexistence of different esthetic and political views. This was due to the extraliterary peculiarities of the newspaper’s circulation at the turn of the century and the need to attract the attention of readers by any means to provide financial success. In the study, the author applies the genre and motif analysis of literary works. The conclusions are based on a wide literary and illustrative material of the Ural newspaper and other newspapers of Ural Region, the memoirs of contemporaries, and archival materials. The characteristic features of literary critical materials published in the Ural newspaper confirm the features of the editorial policy indicated: an appeal to contemporary authors and authors of the past and to works whose authors had different aesthetic views. As a result, the author of the article concludes about the medial position of the literary department of the Ural newspaper, uniting literary works that are diametrically opposed in sociocultural, aesthetic, and geographical terms.

Based on the archival documents of the censorship committee, this article studies the factors that influenced the functioning and determined the suspension of the activities of the newspaper “Kavkazskie obyavleniya” (“Caucasian Advertisements”), as well as the policy and some characteristics of the newspaper. The development of advertising and reference newspapers in Tiflis in the second half of the 19th century had the following characteristics: discreteness, short publication time, broadening content, and frequent name change of newspapers. All newspapers of such type were published mainly in Russian, although when compiling the section of advertisements, the editorial boards, for the most part, gave preference to the principle of multilingualism. It was inherent for the vast majority of private periodicals in Tiflis. The newspaper “Kavkazskie obyavleniya” in some sense served as an accompaniment to the Tiflis newspapers and performed two functional roles: on the one hand, the newspaper work as an additional channel for the distribution of Tiflis press, on the other hand, the it accumulated advertising and reference information, and guaranteed the provision of this information to all readers of the Tiflis periodicals. In 1890, the censorship dismissed the publisher’s request to broaden the newspaper's content, and eventually this decision caused the closure of the newspaper.Despite the short period of existence, the newspaper “Kavkazskie obyavleniya” brought noticeable innovations to the advertising activities of the Tiflis periodicals: an endeavor to concentrate advertising and reference information in one information space and mutually beneficial cooperation with rival press.

POMPAI is a child newspaper born in colonial times. This newspaper comes along with the emergence of movements in Indonesia. Before becoming a child newspaper, POMPAI was a newspaper that also often voiced national movements. Suspicion and pressure from the colonial government, made POMPAI transformed into a child newspaper with the aim of educating indigenous children, especially in West Sumatra. There are several children's newspapers that appear together with the POMPAI newspaper. Among them; Chain Mas and Pelipoer Heart. Both of these newspapers have similarities and differences but have the same goal of wanting to entertain indigenous children and teach knowledge through newspapers. Not many of these children's newspapers are present in West Sumatra. In addition to the pressure from the colonial government, the economic condition of indigenous newspaper businessmen is often a constraint. Age of this newspaper can be said not long or last long. POMPAI itself only lasted about two years. However, his role in the development of the knowledge of indigenous children is taken into account. This can be seen from the rubric and writing as well as the influence of the newspaper POMPAI. Not many natives children can attend school, this newspaper beceme one means of education for them to be illiterate and learn a little to increase knowledge.

Discourse representation deals with language structures which has crucial role not only for the text, but also for social practices. Newspaper is one of the real implementations of discourse representation because newspaper comprises several components in discourse representation. Newspaper in every country is made based on its language and every newspaper has difference and similarity in terms of discourse representation. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the contrastive analysis of discourse representation in Indonesia newspaper and English newspaper reports. The subjects of this study were KOMPAS as representative of Indonesia newspaper and Jakarta Post as representative of English newspaper. This present study applied descriptive qualitative design which focused on representing verbs and modes of discourse representation (direct and indirect discourse). The findings of this study were that both newspapers have differences and similarities even though the difference was not quite dominant. The similarity of these newspapers could be seen from the use of reporting verbs and indirect discourse which were more dominant than the other parts in discourse representation. The difference could be seen also from representing verbs and modes of discourse representation. Although, reporting verbs are majority parts in Indonesia newspaper and English newspaper, but several words in Indonesia had the same translation into English. Manner of speaking verbs, mental verbs were still rare found in Indonesia newspaper. In Indonesia newspaper had only direct and indirect discourse, while in English newspaper had direct, indirect, free direct discourse, and indirect discourse in headline. In short, these newspapers have contrastive analysis in terms of discourse representation.

This article explores how one of the principal mechanisms of media accountability — press ombudsmen — affects journalists. The article uses data from a national survey of journalists to examine the extent to which journalists who work at newspapers with ombudsmen hold different attitudes about appropriate behavior and about their newspaper's performance than do journalists who work at newspapers without ombudsmen. The study shows that the presence of newspaper ombudsmen does not affect journalists' views of controversial newsgathering techniques. Age turns out to be the best predictor of attitudes, with younger journalists more likely to see controversial news-gathering techniques as justified.

This paper examines post-disaster local newspaper coverage associated with the Great East Japan Disaster of March 2011. On the basis of a long-term examination of several Tωhoku disaster area newspapers, the research identifies in the coverage of the disaster a transition from multiple ‘news’ themes to a variety of thematic frames that are presented in long-term newspaper columns. The research uses a database keyword trend to establish a ‘news-based’ newspaper coverage baseline, with framing analysis identifying newspaper columns as the mode frame of longer-term disaster coverage in the local newspapers thereafter. On this basis, the specific thematic frames of these columns of three disaster area newspapers are examined. The research finds that while the newspaper columns of local newspapers reflect the specific disaster-related issues of their areas, there also emerged a column that frames the disaster more optimistically, positioning the disaster as a point of new beginning for Japan and thereby constituting a form of real-time public memory creation. The research contributes to better understanding of both local media response to large-scale disasters based on the case for Japan and proposes a new understanding of the newspaper, in the form of newspaper columns, in disaster journalism, that of public memory construction.

Data from the 1986 Inland Daily Newspaper Association Cost and Revenue Study were examined for the effects of scale on the costs of newspaper production factors. The study finds that total costs rise faster than circulation and that overall revenues rise faster still, although costs per page decline. A hypothesis that “quality” in newspapers yields profits finds some support, but questions remain.

In an effort to cut costs, newspaper chains nationwide have consolidated design operations at a few sites. These design hubs have changed the newspaper production process and removed designers from newsrooms; yet, top designers are able to work with their peers in a major city to produce all titles for a chain. This study uses a quantitative analysis of front pages collected from 435 newspapers throughout the United States to examine the quality of newspaper designs at hub and nonhub-designed newspapers. It concludes that hub designed newspapers are generally better designed than nonhub newspapers.

Newspapers have a very important position in the politics of the Indonesian independence movement. Soara Batak is the first independence movement newspaper published in Batakland. This newspaper became a medium of information and communication, for the political organization Hatopan Kristen Batak (HKB). The initial purpose of publishing this newspaper was to oppose Dutch colonialism and the threat of foreign plantation entrepreneurs who wanted to capitalize on Batakland for personal gain. This can be seen from the motto of this newspaper which is written: Oela tanom, Oelang digomak Oelando which means “Cultivate your land, so that the Dutch do not take it”. This newspaper's courage in criticizing the colonial rulers caused Soara Batak's movements to be closely monitored. Tuan M. H. Manullang and A. Soetan Soemoroeng, the dual HKB and Soara Batak received repressive measures from the colonial government for their bold and sharp writings. The presence of Soara Batak had an important role in the politics of the Batak people's movement, which succeeded in igniting the people's fighting spirit to want to oppose Dutch colonialism which was very oppressive.

When Brazil’s then-president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, was implicated in a bribery scandal in 2005, Senator Antônio Carlos Magalhães from the state of Bahia emerged as one of the president’s most vocal critics. This study relied on a content analysis of scandal coverage in two competing Bahia newspapers: A Tarde, which had no overt political ties, and Correio da Bahia, which Sen. Magalhães owned. Results showed that Magalhães’s newspaper, Correio da Bahia, excluded citizens’ voices and covered Sen. Magalhães more extensively and favorably than did the competing newspaper, A Tarde. Thus, Correio da Bahia succumbed to owner influence, potentially threatening democracy by allowing Magalhães to set the newspaper’s agenda.

A content analysis of three U.S. Internet newspapers has found that Internet newspapers gave more priority to providing textual information than graphic information, and large graphics were more likely to appear on homepages than on frontpages and news article pages. The news links and the multiple communication channels adopted by Internet newspapers in web page design created a new environment of communication, involving more than host newspaper and initial audience. With interconnected links, the traditional one-to-many newspaper publishing process turned into many-to-many communication centered with and facilitated by the host Internet newspapers. The interconnected news links brought in audience participation in producing newspaper content and providing information beyond the original newspaper content, which demonstrates a shift of balance of communicative power from sender to receiver.

This qualitative study focuses on the semantical interpretation of the post-electoral newspaper reporting in gaining the legitimacy from the citizens. The study is being addressed through two research questions: 1) what are the semantical interpretation of the newspaper articles’ headlines in the mainstream and the oppositions’ newspapers? 2) What are the issues highlighted in the newspaper during the post-electoral period of the 13th General Election? The data for the entire research were obtained through the mainstream newspapers which are Utusan Malaysia, Kosmo and Harian Metro and also the opposition’s newspaper represented by Harakah. The data were also collected based on the newspapers that were published after the Election Day has ended. However, the newspapers were not collected daily as the researcher has chosen a few newspapers that contained the traits of having portrayed electoral campaign. The data were analysed using the thematic analysis by deriving themes from the content analysis of the newspapers. The findings were divided into two sections which are semantical interpretations of newspaper articles’ headlines during post-electoral period and issues highlighted in the political campaigns. The researcher has come to a conclusion that both mainstream and opposition based newspapers were portraying improper political headlines during the post-electoral period.

Before the Opium War, Protestant missionaries to China took the Ultra Ganges Mission as a link, and carried out a series of literal missionary activities, and set up missionary stations and printing presses, church schools, and Chinese and foreign-language newspapers and magazines in the South Seas and in China's Canton and Macao, etc. The newspapers founded under the guidance and support of the Ultra Ganges Mission introduced the Western newspaper concepts and newspaper editing and printing techniques into China, cultivated the early Chinese newspaper group, and laid the material and human resource foundation for the Chinese to imitate foreign newspapers and run their own newspapers after the Opium War. By analyzing the historical facts about the establishment of modern Chinese and foreign newspapers and magazines by the Ultra Ganges Mission, this essay demonstrates how the foreign newspapers in China in the first half of the 19th century promoted and influenced the emergence and development of the modern newspaper industry in China.

This study determines the commitment of Suara Merdeka Daily in serving the community. Data were obtained from the analysis of internal regulatory content on editorial work and business. This study used Focus Group Discussions (FGD) to support and share data with the newspaper management team. The results showed that the editorial's internal regulations did not explicitly indicate the commitment to serve the community. This regulation has been implemented for a long time, yet it does not adjust to the relevant newspapers' actual conditions. Generally, businesses have rules that require community involvement in their programs. The management team is expected to revise the regulations to suit the public's needs and develop relevant community involvement for the local newspaper's existence.

Abstract The expansion of foreign correspondent networks in the late Soviet period reflected the importance that international news and reporting had for readers of the Soviet press. This article traces the development of one such foreign correspondent network, that of the Soviet newspaper Sel’skaia zhizn’ (Rural Life), one of the most popular and widespread newspapers in the Soviet Union. Although historiographically overlooked in favor of major political newspapers like Pravda (Truth) and Izvestiia (News), Sel’skaia zhizn’ was an important source of foreign news for the rural population of the Soviet Union. The article examines the role of the editorial office of Sel’skaia zhizn’ in creating a correspondent network, tracing the geographical reach of the newspaper’s correspondents (sobkors) and analyzing their activities and different types of publications. While some materials were similar to those published in other Soviet newspapers, the specifically rural audience of Sel’skaia zhizn’ influenced the topics chosen for articles as well as the style of the authors. The newspaper became a practical guide for readers because foreign correspondents provided them with unique information about the development of agriculture abroad. The article provides research into how readers perceived international news and information in Sel’skaia zhizn’, finding that readers expected the newspaper to fulfill their needs and to reflect their own interests, even in the international section.

Newspapers in Switzerland and the Netherlands, have lost half of their classified adverts to the internet as reflected in an article titled: Who killed the Newspaper? in The Economist of April 24, 2006. However, in recent time, the Nigerian economy has faced a major decline that has affected the existence of newspapers. The marriage of newspapers to the web has not yet proved financially successful for the older medium (Baran, 2012). Thus, this paper examined the impact of economic recession and the internet on newspapers in Nigeria. Study adopted the survey research, sampling four hundred staff of selected newspapers and anchored on the political economy theory. Study found that seven out of ten staff of the four newspapers representing 77.4% said their daily activities are affected by the current economic recession; five out of ten staff of the four newspaper houses representing 47.3% strongly agreed that the internet has effect on the readership of printed newspaper, and four out of ten sampled representing 39.5% said that their management performed fairly during the period. It is therefore recommended that for newspaper houses to survive recession, they should relate with employees and motivate them to give their best. KEYWORDS: Print media/ownership, Political economy theory, Economic recession, Internet (Online) newspaper.

In recent years, local media in the U.S. have faced increasing economic precarity, and many newspapers have been purchased by hedge funds and private equity firms. How do investment owners shape the newspapers they acquire? We document the shift in ownership and its impact on the number and type of journalists that local newsrooms employ. Using over 13,000 digitized media directory pages, we measure the newsrooms of 211 major newspapers from 2005 to 2022. We estimate that the acquisition of a newspaper by an investment owner reduced the paper’s newsroom by nine reporters and editors compared to newspapers that remained under other ownership, a cut equivalent to 14 percent of the average newspaper’s staff. These cuts were concentrated among positions focused on general assignment and political reporting. Our findings indicate the rise of investment owners has accelerated the decline of local newspapers.

The Ottoman Empire was a multinational state. Armenians also benefited from the Ottoman Empire's management style based on tolerance. Turkish-Armenian relations and the Armenian issue are a very comprehensive issue and this issue was published in two newspapers that were the voice of the years of national struggle; It appears frequently in Albayrak and İrade-i Milliye Newspapers. Albayrak Newspaper published 93 issues on March 14, 1913 and March 29, 1915 in Erzurum during the days when Turkish lands were occupied, but 2 of these 93 issues have survived to the present day. The second time the newspaper started its publication life, when the country began to be occupied by the enemy after the Armistice of Mondros; It was dated March 5, 1919 and was published until February 14, 1921. İrade-i Milliye Newspaper started its publication life in Sivas on 4 September 1919 at the end of Sivas Congress and was published until 24 May 1921. Mustafa Kemal Atatürk followed the newspaper closely. These two newspapers carry the characteristics of announcing the occupations of the country, the injustices and the things that need to be said, being the voice of the country and defending the Turkish liberation struggle. In this study, news, articles and articles about the Armenian issue in Albayrak and İrade-i Milliye newspapers were examined. Keywords: Armenian İssue, Albayrak Newspaper, İrade-i Milliye Newspaper

Between the late 1890s and the early 1930s, newspaper chains experienced new growth. The number of newspaper acquisitions and mergers increased and decreased simultaneously with the emergence and decline of the “merger movements.” This study examines the two waves of merger activity affecting all industries around 1900 and the 1920s and compares it to acquisitions and mergers by the largest newspaper chains. This paper suggests that acquisition activity of all business and industry paralleled the acquisition activity in newspapers and fueled the growth of chains through acquisitions; thus newspapers concentrated at an increased rate because of the larger macroeconomic trend and not because of a tendency isolated to the newspaper industry.

A motivational model of newspaper consumption was elaborated. In this model, reading motives are supposed to generate certain beliefs in newspapers. The belief in the satisfying properties of a newspaper is based on an evaluation of how well the attributes of a newspaper are expected to match the motives of individuals. Once a match between the motives and the belief is established, then motivation is triggered, and newspaper consumption should occur. We tested the model with the hypotheses that reading motives explain belief in newspapers to a greater extent than the consumption of them and that beliefs explain consumption to a greater extent than reading motives. Reading motives, beliefs and consumption of general broad-sheet, business and tabloid newspapers were measured in 1343 young people between the ages of 15 and 25. The results supported the hypotheses. The results indicate that the profiling and development of the newspapers toward more loyal and new readers should be based on the readers' beliefs in newspapers and the motives explaining them.

This article revisits four online news business models, first documented in 1997, to discuss current worldwide newspaper website trends and new research data on Australian newspaper websites. The data are from a survey of Australian newspapers and their websites, and show that the Australian experience mirrors international experience in terms of the growth of newspapers online and their lack of profitability. The survey shows that, while there is international evidence that providing news content online reduces offline newspaper subscriptions, a third of the newspapers studied registered circulation increases after setting up their websites. While there is international evidence that generating revenue through online advertising is difficult, for nearly half of the newspapers studied, overall advertising revenue increased after setting up their websites. The survey also found that, while newspaper publishers worldwide continue to rely mainly on the subscription and advertising business models to generate revenue online, there is evidence that Australian newspapers are forming online alliances with other media and non-media businesses to facilitate their online business activities.

The impact of newsroom policies on job satisfaction was studied in an onsite survey of 429 newsroom staffers at twelve West Coast daily newspapers. The study found that newsroom policy changes are affecting journalists' job satisfaction, primarily through the perceived impact of such changes on newspaper quality and on the balance between business and journalism in the newsroom. If the newspaper's quality was perceived as improving, job satisfaction was higher; if journalism was perceived as taking a back seat to business, job satisfaction was lower. Also important were the amount of emphasis on profits (which lowered job satisfaction) and on journalistic policies (which raised job satisfaction). Newspaper size was not found to be a major factor in job satisfaction, but ownership structure was.

A national sample of daily newspaper publishers and editors provides the first look at the dimensions of newspaper managerial innovativeness. A positive relationship was found between the innovativeness of newspaper managers and daily circulation. The data also show newsroom morale is perceived to be higher among innovative managers at large newspapers. Counter-hypothetically, innovativeness of newspaper organizational management was found to be unresponsive to direct market competition. Finally, managerial experience and publisher involvement (as perceived by editors) were shown to be significantly related to management innovativeness. The authors consider the impact of innovation on newspaper organizational health and on the newspaper industry's future.

The use of readership research to shape editorial content is becoming increasingly common at U.S. daily newspapers. This practice reflects a “marketing concept” of journalism, which emphasizes tailoring a product to customers' wants and needs. Data from seventy-eight daily newspapers suggest that as uncertainty about the organization's environment increases—specifically, uncertainty about how to serve readers—an organization will strengthen its marketing orientation. The data also suggest that environmental uncertainty is generally not affected by structural characteristics of the community in which the newspaper publishes. That is, there is little evidence that changes in or characteristics of the newspaper's “real” environment strongly influence the degree of uncertainty that editors have about their newspaper's environment.

The present study assessed newspaper reports of injuries affecting individuals with Spanish surnames and compared newspaper reports to hospital injury discharge data in two counties in Colorado. Newspaper reports came from 12 daily and weekly newspapers. Hospital discharge data were obtained from the Colorado Department of Public Health and the Environment. Motor vehicle crashes, assault and legal intervention, and suicide and suicidal acts were counted. A higher proportion of people with Spanish surnames were reported in newspapers than expected based on the hospital discharge data. Motor vehicle injuries were far more frequent based on hospital discharge data than in newspaper reports. Assault and legal intervention injuries were similarly represented by Hispanic ethnicity and absolute numbers in both reporting sources. Suicide and suicidal acts were not often reported in newspapers relative to hospital discharge data; however, the proportion of Hispanics was not significantly different. These findings suggest that the use of newspapers for surveillance of injuries may be helpful, but should not be used in the absence of other data sources.

The study aimed to identify the hidden meaning lying behind the text of two Malaysian Online newspapers i.e. ‘Malaysiakini’ (alternative newspaper) and ‘The New Straits Times’ (mainstream newspaper). The language of the newspaper always depicts its ideology through its stances. To discover the stances of newspapers, Martin and White (2005) ‘Appraisal Analysis’ framework was employed on 5 news reports (3,265 words) from ‘Malaysiakini’ and 3 news reports from ‘The New Straits Times’ (2,456 words) which were based on the performance of social actors during the 17th and 18th August 2018. It has been found that Pakatan Harapan (PH) government (Dr.Mahathir) was represented the most in both newspapers as compared to the Barisan Nasional (BN) as an opposition who lost the election in 2018, the very first time after independence. By ‘Appraisal Analysis’ it is found that both newspapers have represented Dr. Mahathir the most by positive attitudinal results in ‘Appreciation’ resource as ‘Malaysiakini’ has shown 37%, while; ‘NST’ given 56% positive attitudinal instances being a governmental influenced newspaper.

Newspaper subscription and reading is a traditional habit among most of the people living in Kerala. Most of the people in Kerala start their daily routine by reading a newspaper with a cup of tea. Newspaper agent’s service quality must be evaluated by newspaper publishers from the opinion of newspaper subscribers. If subscribers are not happy with the service of newspaper agent and delivery boys it may affect the overall prosperity of the newspaper industry itself. Therefore it is relevant to measure the service quality of newspaper agents. Nowadays readers have more options for getting information on varying issues. It revealed that regarding the distribution matters of newspapers, many of the subscribers are not pleased with the current status. Interestingly publishers are not interested to know from the subscribers regarding delivery related issues.

The current research study is aimed at critical discourse analysis of the newspaper headlines about the motion of no-confidence against Imran Khan in the parliament of Pakistan. The study is descriptive qualitative. Fairclough’s (1992) framework for critical discourse analysis of a communicative event was used for this study. Twenty-six newspaper headlines were selected from reputed Pakistani English and Urdu newspapers. The data was collected through purposive sampling techniques. The critical discourse analysis of newspaper headlines elucidated how the same news item was differently presented in different newspapers due to the ideological perspectives of their editors. The study reflects that the editors of newspapers have concealed ideologies that aim to create a sensation among their readers by employing a stimulating lexicon. These headlines function as a tool for propagating the hidden ideologies of editors to achieve their concealed objectives. The study draws the conclusion that newspaper headlines are representations of the editors’ ideologies which reflect their political, religious and personal propensity regardless of their claim to be unbiased and neutral in their field. The newspaper editors exploit headlines to shape readers’ thinking on issues of national concern.

The massive influence of media in our daily life has led to an increased interest of analyzing media discourse among linguists. A newspaper editorial is a distinctive register of print media that expresses the newspaper’s opinion about current issues in the world. The present study showed the results of a linguistic comparative analysis of the language of newspaper editorials that are published recently during the Russia-Ukraine War. The investigation is based on samples taken from leading newspapers in the USA and the UAE. The corpus consists of 24 editorials totaling about 16,673 words written in English. The study aimed to investigate two fundamental principles of language use, namely: meta-discourse and phraseology in the genre of newspaper editorials adapting a quantitative content analysis approach. Hyland’s (2005b) interactional model of meta-discourse has been applied in the analysis. Data showed a high level of similarity between the USA and the UAE editorials in terms of frequency of several linguistic markers. Data also showed that stance markers were significantly higher than engagement markers in both corpora. Moreover, results reported a variety of use of collocations, modality, and idiomatic expressions. The study concluded that newspaper editorials are argumentative texts that are distinguished by the use of hedges, attitude markers, and other persuasive devices. The study combines key linguistic concepts and contributes to the field of discourse analysis as it provides useful insights about media discourse and newspaper discourse particularly editorials.

The article is devoted to artistic journalism and artistic publications in the newspaper “Novgorod Veche”, published in Novgorod from the autumn of 1917 to the summer of 1918. The newspaper publishers were V.S. Kolomensky and A.E. Gogolev, who were representatives of the Association of Cooperators Unions of the Novgorod Province. The content of this newspaper was devoted to the activities of the cooperative in the Novgorod province and country. The texts are mainly concerned with politics and economics, although the publication was of a universal type. “Novgorod Veche” was in opposition to the Bolshevik government. The creators of the publication relied on the self-organization of society and defended the legal right of the Constituent Assembly to determine the future of Russia, even despite the dispersal of the meeting by the Bolsheviks on January 7, 1918. The newspapers’ opposition was pamphlet through the publication of pamphlets and feuilletons, which discussed local and Russian events. The Bolsheviks and the political decisions they made were assessed negatively. According to the newspaper’s editors, the Bolshevik power aggravated the catastrophic situation within the country and at the international level. There are few literary texts in the newspaper “Novgorod Veche”: poems, stories, essays, literary criticism. A special place in the first issues of the newspaper is occupied by the column “Calendar of the Novgorod Assembly”, where V. Molochnikov intended to place quotes from wise men, as well as excerpts from books by L.N. Tolstoy.

This paper sets out to explore the concept of readership through a quantitative examination of Central Queensland newspaper readers. Because most Australian media audience research is undertaken by market research companies on behalf of news media corporations, an independent study of readership is needed in order to reveal data which can be used in future studies of regional newspapers and readership. Such data may also be useful in enabling regional newspapers to begin a process of forming stronger connections with their readers and communities. This paper focuses on data collected about newspaper readers in Central Queensland. While discussing Central Queensland newspaper readers, their demographics and newspaper reading habits more generally, this paper establishes a series of mini-profiles of these newspaper readers and investigates the issues which readers would like to see covered more often or less frequently by the newspapers they use. It suggests that these profiles are important for researchers wanting to investigate media in Central Queensland, and that the profiles may provide interesting comparisons of points from which to undertake readership research in other regions of Australia. As well, this paper suggests that such information is essential if regional newspapers are to fulfil the important role they have in their communities and reflect the concerns of their publics. Finally, this paper argues that such data are essential in the process of improving relations between regional newspapers and their communities, and ensuring they adequately reflect their publics.

This study focuses on the comparative multimodal stylistic analysis of selected newspapers cartoons. A comparative study of newspapers cartoon juxtaposes two or more newspaper cartoon brands. Multimodality entails the mode(s) employed in a cartoon to portray meaning. The data for the study comprises ten cartoons selected through the purposive random sampling technique between 2020 and 2021 from The Punch, The Nation and The Guardian newspapers respectively. Data were analysed using Halliday’s meta-function of language in his Systemic Functional Grammar. It was discovered that framing, salience and linking layout are handy analytical tools in carrying out a multimodal analysis; each brand communicates its thoughts in a unique way with salient similarities and it was discovered that newspaper cartoons also lament the current tragic occurrence in society. This study concludes that visual mode is the lifeblood of a newspaper cartoon while the verbal mode only complements cartoon but cannot stand alone as a newspaper cartoon.

The Norwegian media system has a variety of media outlets. However, historically, it was newspapers that were the most demanded and popular media among Norwegians. Newspaper became the basic assets of Norway's first media groups. In 2020, three media companies were represented on the newspaper market: Shibstead, Amedia, and Polaris Media. The research is an analytical study of the Norwegian newspaper market during the COVID-19 pandemic. The purpose of the study was to identify the main trends in the development of the Norwegian newspaper market during the pandemic. The results of the analysis Norwegian newspaper market in 2020 showed that, firstly, one of the main trends has become the concentration of media assets, which is increasing every year, and in 2020 its predominance was facilitated by changes in media regulation. Secondly, the pandemic has accelerated the digitalization of newspapers, which has affected the growth of digital circulation, and, as a result, has a beneficial effect on the revenues of media companies, as well as the government strategy for the transition to digital media. Third, advertising revenues of offline newspapers continued to decline, but none of newspapers closed, and operating profit of media companies increased compared to 2019. Thus, despite the restrictions associated with the pandemic, the trends in the development of the Norwegian newspaper market were associated mainly with the strengthening of trends that formed earlier, and not of those that were a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The empirical base of the study was the reports for 2020 of the Norwegian Media Office, the Statistics Bureau of Norway, reports of S. Hirst on researching the Norwegian newspaper market, reports of the media companies Shibsted, Amedia, Polaris Media.

How does a newspaper audience that is regularly exposed to an ombudsman program and a news criticism column perceive the newspapers' accountability? A cross-sectional telephone survey was conducted with 393 respondents in Louisville, Ky, where newspapers have both features. The findings supported the expectation that those with higher awareness of the ombudsman have higher perceptions of newspaper accountability. There was no support for the idea that more frequent column readership would be linked to higher perceptions of accountability. The findings may be connected to the promotion of the ombudsman program by the newspapers.
