This study aimed to examine the perceived risks and benefits of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) in Nigeria with a focus on the agricultural technology of nitrogen use efficient, water use efficient, and salt-tolerant (NEWEST) Rice. A descriptive survey method was adopted for this study. Using a convenient sampling technique, 100 residents were drawn from the general population as respondents for this study. The questionnaire which was the instrument for data collection was administered to the respondents by the researcher personally. The results show that 58% of respondents will buy or eat NEWEST Rice. About 20% of the respondents would buy or eat NEWEST Rice because of its cheaper price, 15% for its nutritional benefits, and 13% for its better look and taste. Findings from this research also revealed that the perceived risks of NEWEST Rice are cross-pollination, adverse effects to human health, not looking and tasting good like organic rice, and antibiotic resistance in humans. The benefits identified include an abundance of rice supply to reduce poverty and starvation in Nigeria, improve the efficiency, profitability, and productivity of farmers, NEWEST Rice can minimize the use of water and fertilizer, better nutritional qualities, and reduction in pesticide use. This study, therefore, shows that NEWEST Rice will be averagely accepted (58%) in Nigeria. However, due to the intense debate on GM crops, there is a need for an improvement in the efficacy of scientific communication. There is also a need to create an informed, balanced public perception on the important issue of genetic engineering used in agriculture, even from the confined field trials, multi-location trials and use of GM crops in Nigeria.

This study developed and validated an analytical methodology for the determination of aflatoxins, enniatins, beauvericin, zearalenone, ochratoxin-A, alternariols, HT-2 and T-2 toxin in soy, oat, rice and almond beverages, based on solid phase extraction columns (SPE) and analyzed by liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry in tandem. C18 SPE was successfully applied, obtaining recoveries that range from 72 ± 12% (ochratoxin-A) to 99 ± 4% (ENA1) at high level (L1) and 65 ± 8% (T-2) to 128 ± 9% (alternariol monomethyl ether) at low levels (L3). The methodology was validated according to Commission Decision 2002/657/EC, with limits of quantification ranging from 0.3 (AFs in oat beverages) to 18 ng/mL (HT-2 in rice beverage). The analysis of 56 beverage samples purchased from Valencia (Spain) showed at least one mycotoxin occurring in 95% of samples, including carcinogenic aflatoxins, and oat beverage was the most contaminated. This is a newest validated methodology for the quantification of sixty mycotoxins in oat, rice, almond and soy beverages.

- This research aims to study the appropriate growing media for the growth of cacti that can reduce production costs and promote cacti’s growth. The research used four genera of cacti, i.e., Gymnocalycium, Astrophytum, Mammillaria, and Echinopsis, which were famous in the commercial market in Thailand. The experimental design was completely randomized designs (CRD) with four different growing media and three replications; T1) fermented rain tree leaves (FRTL): perlite: vermiculite: pumice: vermicompost as a control, T2) FRTL: rice husk: coconut coir: charcoal: vermicompost, T3) FRTL: rice husk ash: coconut husks chips: expanded clay: vermicompost and T4) rice husk ash: vermicompost. The plant was cultivated the plastic pot 2-inches and collected the growth for six months. The result showed that Mammillaria was planted in Treatment 3 gave the greatest stem diameter and the number of roots. A similar increase in stem diameter of Echinopsis and Gymnocalycium had the newest areoles. While planted in T4, as a result, the genus Astrophytum has increased in stem diameter, the number of new areoles, and the number of roots. In the Gymnocalycium also found an increase in stem diameter. Therefore, the use of cacti growing media in T3 as an appropriate for the growth of cacti. Furthermore, it can reduce the production cost of growing media about 0.72 baht per pot (33%) when compared with the commercial media (T1) in a 2-inches plastic pot.

Sutematsu Kajiura found himself in the early 20th century where the known essential nutrients only consisted of amino acids, carbohydrates, fats, minerals and water. Therefore, scientists and doctors were navigating a battlefield without comprehensive knowledge of the terrain, being completely unaware of the essential sector of vitamins. This is the world in which our story was published and Kajiura was on a mission to find the cause of the ‘national disease,’ beriberi, now known to be caused primarily by thiamine (vitamin B1) deficiency. Though Kajiura discovered neither the cause nor the cure, he made major contributions to plant seed biology by identifying and isolating the major protein in rice, oryzenin, which was later studied indepth. In addition, he was unknowingly a part of the massive movement toward the discovery of vitamins, the newest member of the essential nutrient family.

Drought tolerance is an important quantitative trait with multipart phenotypes that are often further complicated by plant phenology. Different types of environmental stresses, such as high irradiance, high temperatures, nutrient deficiencies, and toxicities, may challenge crops simultaneously; therefore, breeding for drought tolerance is very complicated. Interdisciplinary researchers have been attempting to dissect and comprehend the mechanisms of plant tolerance to drought stress using various methods; however, the limited success of molecular breeding and physiological approaches suggests that we rethink our strategies. Recent genetic techniques and genomics tools coupled with advances in breeding methodologies and precise phenotyping will likely reveal candidate genes and metabolic pathways underlying drought tolerance in crops. The WRKY transcription factors are involved in different biological processes in plant development. This zinc (Zn) finger protein family, particularly members that respond to and mediate stress responses, is exclusively found in plants. A total of 89 WRKY genes in japonica and 97 WRKY genes in O. nivara (OnWRKY) have been identified and mapped onto individual chromosomes. To increase the drought tolerance of rice (Oryza sativa L.), research programs should address the problem using a multidisciplinary strategy, including the interaction of plant phenology and multiple stresses, and the combination of drought tolerance traits with different genetic and genomics approaches, such as microarrays, quantitative trait loci (QTLs), WRKY gene family members with roles in drought tolerance, and transgenic crops. This review discusses the newest advances in plant physiology for the exact phenotyping of plant responses to drought to update methods of analysing drought tolerance in rice. Finally, based on the physiological/morphological and molecular mechanisms found in resistant parent lines, a strategy is suggested to select a particular environment and adapt suitable germplasm to that environment.

Background: The Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste is the newest nation in the 21st century, which became independent in 2002. Yet continued violent tensions kept the country from stabilizing its sociopolitical situations and it remains as a least developed country with many challenging issues, including food/nutrition insecurity. The international community has been supporting Timor-Leste to ameliorate it by aiding the agricultural development of the country. Objective: The objective of this study is to examine the aid profile of the donors for Timorese agricultural development. The findings of the study intend to provide the Timorese government and donors with a useful dialogue point for more efficient collaboration. Methods: The aid data reported to the Creditor Reporting System are sorted for the profile examination. The analysis is based on the aid disbursement between 2002 and 2019. Results: Australia was the largest donor, mostly shaping the agricultural aid profile of the donors. Japan, USA, and New Zealand were the major donors in that order, following Australia. Yet, their prioritized sub-sectors or interests appeared to vary; Australia prioritized strengthening Timorese seed systems and focused on nutrition-sensitive agriculture, Japan emphasized rice production, USA was mainly interested in cash/horticultural crops value chains, and New Zealand invested mainly in agricultural cooperatives. Of the multilateral organizations, the European Union was the principal donor. Conclusion: The Timorese government and donors may need a strategic collaboration to utilize available resources more efficiently as its food/nutrition insecurity is rooted in complex issues and improving it also hinges on development of other sectors.

This study attempted to explore the process of word formation and its social function of slang words on Rich Brian's official music video, precisely in the comment section of the newest song of him, D.O.A that released on 25 August 2020. This study employed discourse and sociolinguistics aspects; hence, this study's research design was a descriptive qualitative. Additionally, this study's object was a one-month comment section of Rich Brian's newest song official music video. Furthermore, there were two sources of data, primary and secondary data sources. The primary data were a comment section of Rich Brian's newest official song music video, while the secondary source was from available works of literature and urban dictionary. Therefore, to collect the data, this study did the documentation from the D.O.A. official music video from one-month duration comments. As the data obtained, there were 49 slang words found. Then, they were analyzed through Yule (2010)�s theory as the basis of word formation process standard, while Zhou & Fan (2013)�s theory was used as the basis of word formation function standard. Data analysis is divided into several steps: reading, collecting, classifying, and analyzing the data. The result showed that derivation was the highest frequency of the word-formation process. It was 22%, the acronym was 18%, coinage was 16%, the conversion was 14%, blending was 12%, compounding was 8%, clipping was 6%, borrowing and multiple processes were 2% of each. Besides, the highest social function was to express emotive feeling with 49 % quantity of the frequency. The second higher was to pursue self-identity, achieving politeness was 8%. This study suggested a more in-depth analysis of non-standard languages, such as swear words or taboo words and emoticon that can be done through a social semiotic approach.

Purpose This paper evaluates the different digital libraries (DLs) in India developed in the past two decades. These DLs help advance scholarship and facilitate the reading habits of their users. Many of these DLs have a rich collection of vernacular literature depicting India’s diverse cultural heritages and traditions. DLs in India also help in outreaching global researchers and knowledge seekers. Many diaspora communities use these DLs frequently and other stakeholders such as the international scholars interested in Indic civilization. This paper finally suggests a way forward to make operational DL initiatives discoverable to humans and machines with the adaptation of FAIR principles that make e-resources findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable for their discovery beyond respective DL portals. Design/methodology/approach This study used a desk survey of DL initiatives in India. Their salient features are obtained from their respective Web portals and social media profiles. Findings This study identified twelve operational DL initiatives in India. Out of them, the newest five DL initiatives are described in this paper. Originality/value This study reflects original findings on the newest five DL initiatives of India. These findings were not earlier reported in a journal article.

Billions of tons of agro-industrial residues are produced worldwide. This is associated with the risk of pollution as well as management and economic problems. Simultaneously, non-edible portions of many crops are rich in bioactive compounds with valuable properties. For this reason, developing various methods for utilizing agro-industrial residues as a source of high-value by-products is very important. The main objective of the paper is a review of the newest studies on biologically active compounds included in non-edible parts of crops with the highest amount of waste generated annually in the world. The review also provides the newest data on the chemical and biological properties, as well as the potential application of phytochemicals from such waste. The review shows that, in 2020, there were above 6 billion tonnes of residues only from the most popular crops. The greatest amount is generated during sugar, oil, and flour production. All described residues contain valuable phytochemicals that exhibit antioxidant, antimicrobial and very often anti-cancer activity. Many studies show interesting applications, mainly in pharmaceuticals and food production, but also in agriculture and wastewater remediation, as well as metal and steel industries.

Carotenoids are groups of important bioactive compounds,which possess such important physiological active functions as antioxidant, anti-aging, and preventing cancer or cardiovascular disease. In China, it is rich in fruit resources whose processing wastes contain large amount of carotenoids. With the rapid development of modern detection methods, many advanced technologies have been employed to extract and purify them from fruit wastes, effectively utilizing their active compounds. The biological actions and the newest extraction and purification methods of carotenoids from fruit pomace are reviewed in this paper, making contributions to their further study and industrialized developments.

This paper focuses on researches of the design and implementation of an innovative 3D video camera. Traditional 3D cameras use USB2.0 bus or similar buses. Those cameras are not capable of transferring high definition (HD) videos due to bus speed limitation. Utilizing the newest USB3.0 bus and high definition image sensors, this thesis designs one HD 3D camera and solves above problem. To maximize data transfer speed, it employs one 200MHz operating frequency ARM controller which guarantees real-time system responses at the same time. The field trial has demonstrated HD 3D camera in the article is feasible and rich in value of research.

The newest results of sedimentological and paleontological investigations of part of the Urgonian Limestones studied in the surrounding of Boljevac on the SE slopes of the Kucaj Mts. (Carpatho-Balkanides, eastern Serbia) are presented. On two localities, near the village Faca Vajali, four types of microfacies and one subtype within the bioclastic limestones were separated. The characteristics of the depositional environments of the investigated Urgonian Limestones were studied and are discussed. At the base of the established rich microassociations of foraminifera and algae, the vertical distribution of foraminiferal species was precisely defined which enabled the determination the the age of this part of the Urgonian Limestones as Late Barremian-Early Aptian.

Since Gazeley, Newell, Bezabith assume that industrial workers in the past had access to contemporary foods, the revised calorie levels reflect contemporary diets rather than historical diets.

SuperSpeed bus, also known as USB3.0 bus or SuperSpeed USB bus, is the newest USB bus technology. This paper presents an innovative DMA transfer method called Multi-thread Chain DMA for SuperSpeed bus video data transmissions. The maximum 5Gbps giant data rate of SuperSpeed bus demands a high speed and high reliability DMA method. However, traditional DMA method can not achieve this required data rate due to its separate data transmission and reception. Unlike traditional DMA method, utilizing a novel designed mechanism, Multi-thread Chain DMA transfer method transmits and receives data concurrently, achieves SuperSpeed data rate and guarantees no data loss. Furthermore, one communication protocol for SuperSpeed video transmission is designed and implemented to comply with USB Video Class (UVC) standard. The field trial has demonstrated Multi-thread Chain DMA transfer method and SuperSpeed video communication protocol in the article are feasible and rich in value of research.

Compared with terrestrial ecosystems, marine ecosystems have a higher proportion of heterotrophic biomass. Building from this observation, we define the North Atlantic biome as the region where the large, lipid-rich copepod Calanus finmarchicus is the dominant mesozooplankton species. This species is superbly adapted to take advantage of the intense pulse of productivity associated with the North Atlantic spring bloom. Most of the characteristic North Atlantic species, including cod, herring, and right whales, rely on C. finmarchicus either directly or indirectly. The notion of a biome rests inherently on an assumption of stability, yet conditions in the North Atlantic are anything but stable. Humans have reduced the abundance of many fish and whales (though some recovery is underway). Humans are also introducing physical and chemical trends associated with global climate change. Thus, the future of the North Atlantic depends on the biome's newest species, Homo sapiens.

The dynamics of an interface connecting a stationary stripe pattern with a homogeneous state is studied. The conventional approach which describes this interface, Newell–Whitehead–Segel amplitude equation, does not account for the rich dynamics exhibited by these interfaces. By amending this amplitude equation with a nonresonate term, we can describe this interface and its dynamics in a unified manner. This model exhibits a rich and complex transversal dynamics at the interface, including front propagations, transversal patterns, locking phenomenon, and transversal localized structures.

AbstractThis paper outlines recent developments in regional cooperation within the Gulf of Guinea region leading to the recent establishment of the Gulf of Guinea Commission. The huge interest generated among the major oil-producing multinational corporations, the newer independent producers and the participating States in the Gulf of Guinea necessitates a critical assessment of the Treaty Establishing the Gulf of Guinea Commission. This paper adopts a comparative analysis with pre-existing regional and institutional bodies having similar aims and objectives. The aim is to ascertain whether and to what extent the emergent regime can facilitate a sustainable and responsive regime for the anticipated explosion of exploitative activities in this resource-rich and strategic littoral zone. This paper, thus, places the existing regime in the context of international best practices for multinationals and governments involved in oil and gas exploration and production. The author identifies certain imperatives for the consideration of both the corporate and sovereign interests in the world's newest resource Eldorado.

Seventy-nine kimberlite intrusions have been identified in the Churchill Province, Nunavut, the result of an aggressive diamond exploration program by Shear Minerals Ltd. and their partners. This is one of Canada’s newest and largest kimberlite districts, situated immediately west of Hudson Bay between the communities of Rankin Inlet and Chesterfield Inlet. This study documents the occurrence of bonafide kimberlite rocks, classified as mainly sparsely macrocrystic, oxide-rich calcite evolved hypabyssal kimberlite and macrocrystic oxide-rich monticellite phlogopite hypabyssal kimberlite. Electron microprobe analyses of olivine, phlogopite, spinel, and perovskite support this petrographical classification. Low 87Sr/86Sr isotopic compositions determined from perovskite indicate a group I affinity. In addition, 27 precise U–Pb perovskite and Rb–Sr phlogopite emplacement ages have been determined for the Churchill kimberlites, indicating that magmatism spans ∼45 million years (225–170 Ma). The Churchill kimberlites belong to the NW–SE-trending corridor of Jurassic–Triassic kimberlite magmatism in eastern North America, which includes the Kirkland Lake, Timiskaming, and Attawapiskat kimberlite fields. Churchill kimberlites extend this corridor ∼800 km northwest, suggesting that the corridor may continue northwest with older kimberlites. This corridor is interpreted as the continental expression of magmatism linked to either a single or multiple mantle-plume hotspot track(s), a pattern geographically coincident with independent estimates for the timing and location of the continental extension of both the Great Meteor and Verde hotspot tracks.

The extract of pomegranate (Punica granatum) has been applied in medicine since ancient times due to its broad-spectrum health-beneficial properties. It is a rich source of hydrolyzable tannins and anthocyanins, exhibiting strong antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, and antineoplastic properties. Anticancer activities of pomegranate with reference to modulated signaling pathways in various cancer diseases have been recently reviewed. However, less is known about punicalagin (Pug), a prevailing compound in pomegranate, seemingly responsible for its most beneficial properties. In this review, the newest data derived from recent scientific reports addressing Pug impact on neoplastic cells are summarized and discussed. Its attenuating effect on signaling circuits promoting cancer growth and invasion is depicted. The Pug-induced redirection of signal-transduction pathways from survival and proliferation into cell-cycle arrest, apoptosis, senescence, and autophagy (thus compromising neoplastic progression) is delineated. Considerations presented in this review are based mainly on data obtained from in vitro cell line models and concern the influence of Pug on human cervical, ovarian, breast, lung, thyroid, colorectal, central nervous system, bone, as well as other cancer types.

Cet article tente de mieux comprendre la nature du frisson sous-tendant un motif esthétique spécifique et familier du pamphlet satirique élisabéthain : celui du messager infernal. Continuellement transformé par presqu’un siècle de controverses religieuses, et talonnant les pamphlets anticatholiques et antipuritains du milieu du XVIe siècle, le pamphlet élisabéthain contenait déjà des traces de sédition et d’hérésie. Ils s’accordaient parfaitement avec la figure du fantôme subversif que l’on trouve dans certains pamphlets de Robert Greene, Thomas Nashe, Henry Chettle et Barnaby Riche. En examinant les pamphlets de Greene, le Pierce Penilesse, his Supplication to the Divell de Nashe et le Kind Hartes Dreame de Chettle, et en examinant en détail le Greenes Newes both from Heaven and Hell, de Riche, qui réutilise le motif du fantôme dans ses pamphlets précédents, cet article montre que ces écrivains élisabéthains étaient conscients du rôle qu’avait le pamphlet satirique en tant que représentation et manifestation d’une énergie sociale subversive, et que la présence fantomatique dans le pamphlet infernal était une forme unique de concrétisation de cette subversion.

The Lithuanian historiography is not a novelty in Polish academic literature. The attempts undertaken many times by historians to examine the Lithuanian past are fully justi€ed by the common history of the Polish and Lithuanian lands. It is worth stressing that there are still many controversial questions in this area, which have not been answered in both Lithuanian and Polish academic circles. Taking into account the basic facts from Lithuanian history in the 20th century, when Lithuanians undertook the first actions towards developing a state which would be offcially recognized by the international community, it should not be surprising that it is a subject frequently discussed by the newest studies, which continually refer to the equally rich literature of the earlier period. The researchers ascribe considerable signi!cance to the circumstances, in which the independent Lithuanian state came into being and to its functioning in the interwar period, in years 1918–1940 . What also had a strong influence on this process were the following events in the history of the state, when Lithuania was in the end incorporated into the Soviet Union.

The paper aims to improve the methodology of the Digital Economic and Society Index (DESI), the European Commission’s newest index to assess the development of the digital economy. In particular, we investigate whether methodological changes to the structure of DESI improve its ability to capture the digital transformation of EU economies. Using the sensitivitybased analysis, we check whether the selection of weights of individual elements included in the DESI is optimal or should be improved. We also verify the importance of DESI in explaining changes in GDP per capita in EU economies. In the literature, we find that digital transformation has enabled the creation of new business models and maximized efficiency in traditional firms. Using DESI, we empirically test whether the gap between rich and poor countries in European Union can be closed or eliminated through rapid and intensive digital transformation. Our results show that the DESI – when modified by eliminating the pillars on internet services and digital public services – has the same explanatory power. Connectivity is the dimension with the largest impact on digital transformation in EU countries. We also find that DESI is a significant regressor to explain changes in GDP per capita in EU countries.

Olive (Olea europaea) is one of the most extensive crops in the Mediterranean countries, and an important source of extra distinctive compounds that has been widely tested due to its known health benefits. Olive derivatives, such as extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) and olive leaves are rich in antioxidant compounds such as hydroxytyrosol (HXT) and oleuropein and oleic acid, as main monounsaturated fatty acid. Because of HXT molecular structure, its regular consumption reports important beneficial properties such as anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anticancer. As a matter of fact, its antioxidant and antimicrobial effects made this compound a good preservative agent against meat deterioration and spoilage, capable of replacing some synthetic additives whose continued and regular consumption may negatively affect the human health. On the contrary side, this extract has an unpleasant odor and flavor, so a synthetic source of HXT could also be used to improve the sensory quality of the meat products. In this sense, this review exposes the health benefits provided by the consumption of EVOO and HXT, and the newest research about its application on meat, together new trends about its use as functional ingredient in meat and meat products.

Abstract Focus and newness are distinct features. The fact that subconstituents of focus can be given or discourse-old has been pointed out in Selkirk (1984) and Lambrecht (1994). Nevertheless, when it comes to Sentence Focus, it is still common to equate Focus with newness, and to treat SF sentences as necessarily all-new. One of the reasons for such bias is that formally or typologically oriented descriptions of SF tend to analyze only intransitive ‘out of the blue’ SF utterances stemming from elicitation. Based on SF utterances in natural speech in Kakabe, a Western Mande language, the present study shows that in natural speech SF utterances are associated with a rich array of discourse strategies. Accordingly, the discourse properties of the referents inside SF are subject to variation and affect the implementation of the focus-marking. The study also shows how the discourse properties of referents define the distribution of the focus marker in Kakabe.

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) are more frequent as climate changes and tropical toxic species move northward, especially along the Iberian Peninsula, a rich aquaculture area. Monitoring programs, detecting the presence of toxic algae before they bloom, are of paramount importance to protect ecosystems, aquaculture, human health and local economies. Rapid, reliable species identification methods using molecular barcodes coupled to biosensor detection tools have received increasing attention as an alternative to the legally required but impractical microscopic counting-based techniques. Our electrochemical detection system has improved, moving from conventional sandwich hybridization protocols using different redox mediators and signal probes with different labels to a novel strategy involving the recognition of RNA heteroduplexes by antibodies further labelled with bacterial antibody binding proteins conjugated with multiple enzyme molecules. Each change has increased sensitivity. A 150-fold signal increase has been produced with our newest protocol using magnetic microbeads (MBs) and amperometric detection at screen-printed carbon electrodes (SPCEs) to detect the target RNA of toxic species. We can detect as few as 10 cells L−1 for some species by using a fast (~2 h), simple (PCR-free) and cheap methodology (~2 EUR/determination) that will allow this methodology to be integrated into easy-to-use portable systems.

The structure of two hydrated proton exchange membranes for fuel cells (PEMFC), Nafion® (Dupont) and Hyflon® (Solvay), is studied by all-atom molecular dynamics (MD) computer simulations. Since the characteristic times of these systems are long compared to the times for which they can be simulated, several different, but equivalent, initial configurations with a large degree of randomness are generated for different water contents and then equilibrated and simulated in parallel. A more constrained structure, analog to the newest model proposed in the literature based on scattering experiments, is investigated in the same way. One might speculate that a limited degree of entanglement of the polymer chains is a key feature of the structures showing the best agreement with experiment. Nevertheless, the overall conclusion remains that the scattering experiments cannot distinguish between the several, in our view equally plausible, structural models. We thus find that the characteristic features of experimental scattering curves are, after equilibration, fairly well reproduced by all systems prepared with our method. We thus study in more detail some structural details. We attempt to characterize the spatial and size distribution of the water rich domains, which is where the proton diffusion mostly takes place, using several clustering algorithms.

Disintegrins are a family of small cysteine-rich peptides, found in a wide variety of snake venoms of different phylogenetic origin. These peptides selectively bind to integrins, which are heterodimeric adhesion receptors that play a fundamental role in the regulation of many physiological and pathological processes, such as hemostasis and tumor metastasis. Most disintegrins interact with integrins through the RGD (Arg-Gly-Asp) sequence loop, resulting in an active site that modulates the integrin activity. Some variations in the tripeptide sequence and the variability in its neighborhood result in a different specificity or affinity toward integrin receptors from platelets, tumor cells or neutrophils. Recombinant forms of these proteins are obtained mainly through Escherichia coli, which is the most common host used for heterologous expression. Advances in the study of the structure-activity relationship and importance of some regions of the molecule, especially the hairpin loop and the C-terminus, rely on approaches such as site-directed mutagenesis and the design and expression of chimeric peptides. This review provides highlights of the biological relevance and contribution of recombinant disintegrins to the understanding of their binding specificity, biological activities and therapeutic potential. The biological and pharmacological relevance on the newest discoveries about this family of integrin-binding proteins are discussed.

The most important feature of thermal waters is that they reflect the physicochemical structure and characteristics of the underground environment to the earth. Today, the phenomenon of tourism has changed rapidly and new touristic phenomena have emerged. It is only possible for developing countries such as Turkey to increase their share in the tourism market by diversifying their tourism services and products. Turkey is a very rich destination in terms of alternative tourism opportunities. One of the alternative tourism resources that needs to be developed in Turkey is thermal waters. The city of Sivas is at the forefront of Turkey with its thermal water resources. Among the thermal tourism destinations of the city of Sivas, Altınkale is the newest one with important touristic attractions. The interesting feature of Altınkale is that it consists of golden colored water travertines. The hot and healing thermal waters in Altınkale paint the travertines golden color. Altınkale has an important touristic attraction in Sivas city with its destination, healing, nature and color. In this study, Altınkale, which is a candidate to be a new center of attraction in thermal water tourism, is discussed.

Abstract Portal vein thrombosis, in the clinical setting of liver cirrhosis, is a complication which increases mortality rate by leading to specific complications. Its presence also serves as a negative prognostic factor for these patients. Specialized literature, although rich in papers on this subject, presents loose and sometimes contradictory information regarding its prognosis and specific treatment. This paper brings into discussion the issue of recent portal vein thrombosis in cirrhotic patients, with emphasis on indications for initiation of anticoagulant therapy and the optimal drug of choice. It also highlights the utility of using correct terminology for facilitating clinical approach of guideline recommendations as well as increasing the quality of published scientific papers. The coagulation homeostasis of the cirrhotic patient presents many particularities that can make the optimal therapeutic choice extremely difficult when portal vein thrombosis is established. Absence of randomized clinical trials and lack of consensus regarding anticoagulant treatment in these patients leaves it up to the clinician to decide when and what anticoagulant to use. Analysis of the newest guidelines and recent meta-analysis made it possible to identify the right context for initiating therapy with the most used anticoagulants currently: low molecular weight heparin, vitamin K antagonists and direct oral anticoagulants.

The Turkish people, with their ancient roots and extremely rich cultural heritage, have made a very valuable spiritual contribution to the fine arts of the world. With the formation of the Republic in Turkey, such areas of art as sculpture, graphics, advertising and poster began to develop. The creation of the first monuments of monumental sculpture in the history of Turkey and the appearance of many famous Turkish sculptors is connected with the establishment of the Republic. As a result of the application of education, science, and literacy in all spheres of Turkish society, many famous women-artists, artists, athletes, and civil servants-appeared during the Republic. The fact that the state does not bind artists within the framework of any ideology, gives them freedom of creativity, leads to the appearance of different styles and interesting creative searches in the Turkish art of the Republic period. This article is devoted to the study of the reflection in the Turkish art of the twentieth century of the unique reforms that the great Ataturk preached and applied.

Abstract The aim of the study was to test the suitability of the 6th edition of Polish Soil Classification (SGP6) in reflecting the typical features of subalpine Bieszczady Mts. soils in comparison with the 5th edition of Polish Soil Classification (SGP5) and the newest version of World Reference Base for Soil Resources (WRB). Five soil profiles located in differentiated in terms of the parent material, topography and vegetation conditions of the natural environment were investigated. On the basis of described morphology and determined properties soils were classified according to different soil classifications. All soils under study were featured by presence of thick A horizons and high content of soil organic carbon accumulated even very deep in the profiles. Some of the mineral topsoil layers were classified as umbric/umbrik horizons. Moreover cambic/kambik horizons were present and in some cases also weak redoximorphic features occurred. The SGP6 enabled to distinguish soils with a thick, organic carbon-rich A horizons as umbrisols, a newly created subtype of grey soils. Furthermore, the soil taxonomic position according to SGP6 was more detailed in relation to the soil trophic status (in case of brown soils) and occurrence of weak redoximorphic features. That was reflected in number of subtypes to which analyzed soils were classified – 4 in SGP6 vs 2 in SGP5.

Recognizing time expressions is a fundamental and important task in many applications of natural language understanding, such as reading comprehension and question answering. Several newest state-of-the-art approaches have achieved good performance on recognizing time expressions. These approaches are black-boxed or based on heuristic rules, which leads to the difficulty in understanding the temporal information. On the contrary, classic rule-based or semantic parsing approaches can capture rich structural information, but their performances on recognition are not so good. In this paper, we propose a pattern-based approach, called PTime, which automatically generates and selects patterns for recognizing time expressions. In this approach, time expressions in training text are abstracted into type sequences by using fine-grained token types, thus the problem is transformed to select an appropriate subset of the sequential patterns. We use the Extended Budgeted Maximum Coverage (EBMC) model to optimize the pattern selection. The main idea is to maximize the correct token sequences matched by the selected patterns while the number of the mistakes should be limited by an adjustable budget. The interpretability of patterns and the adjustability of permitted number of mistakes make PTime a very promising approach for many applications. Experimental results show that PTime achieves a very competitive performance as compared with existing state-of-the-art approaches.

In recent years, the amount of data has been increased dramatically, driven by many real-world fields such as marketing, learning, social media, multimedia, medicine…etc. Because of that, data mining algorithms have extensively used on these data to serve as one of the newest data modeling and analytical tools, by which, a knowledge-rich environment can be generated and decision-making can be improved. Data mining tools can be employed for reducing these tests and predicting future trends by valuable information-driven decisions. There are two categories of data mining algorithms: descriptive and predictive. The rules of clustering, association, summarization, and sequence discovery will be associated with descriptive type. On the other hand, predictive type will compromise classification, regression and time series analysis rules. In this paper, a study have been presented for helping specialists and physicians in Iraq to investigate heart problems via (Weka 3.8.3) software focusing on four data mining classification techniques (1BK, J48, Naïve Bayes and REPTREE). The predictive precision tests, the ROC curve, and the AUC value are calculated using a compiled dataset that have been obtained from the hospital of Ibn al-Bitar and the hospital of Baghdad medical city. The performance of the J48 technique (94.5%) indicates optimum performance based on SMO no performance factor of Baghdad medical city.

Cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) facilitates the exchange of cholesteryl esters and triglycerides (TG) between high-density lipoprotein (HDL) particles and TG-rich, apolipoprotein (apo) B-containing particles. Initially, these compounds were developed to raise plasma HDL cholesterol (HDL-C) levels, a mechanism that was previously thought to lower the risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). More recently, the focus changed and the use of pharmacologic CETP inhibitors to reduce low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), non-HDL-C and apoB concentrations became supported by several lines of evidence from animal models, observational investigations, randomized controlled trials and Mendelian randomization studies. Furthermore, a cardiovascular outcome trial of anacetrapib demonstrated that CETP inhibition significantly reduced the risk of major coronary events in patients with ASCVD in a manner directly proportional to the substantial reduction in LDL-C and apoB. These data have dramatically shifted the attention on CETP away from raising HDL-C instead to lowering apoB-containing lipoproteins, which is relevant since the newest CETP inhibitor, obicetrapib, reduces LDL-C by up to 51% and apoB by up to 30% when taken in combination with a high-intensity statin. An ongoing cardiovascular outcome trial of obicetrapib in patients with ASCVD is expected to provide further evidence of the ability of CETP inhibitors to reduce major adverse cardiovascular events by lowering apoB. The purpose of the present review is to provide an up-to-date understanding of CETP inhibition and its relationship to ASCVD risk reduction.

Gene-poor, repeat-rich regions of the genome are poorly understood and have been understudied due to technical challenges and the misconception that they are degenerating “junk.” Yet multiple lines of evidence indicate these regions may be an important source of variation that could drive adaptation and species divergence, particularly through regulation of fertility. The ∼40 Mb Y chromosome of Drosophila melanogaster contains only 16 known protein-coding genes, and is highly repetitive and entirely heterochromatic. Most of the genes originated from duplication of autosomal genes and have reduced nonsynonymous substitution rates, suggesting functional constraint. We devised a genetic strategy for recovering and retaining stocks with sterile Y-linked mutations and combined it with CRISPR to create mutants with deletions that disrupt three Y-linked genes. Two genes, PRY and FDY, had no previously identified functions. We found that PRY mutant males are subfertile, but FDY mutant males had no detectable fertility defects. FDY, the newest known gene on the Y chromosome, may have fertility effects that are conditional or too subtle to detect. The third gene, CCY, had been predicted but never formally shown to be required for male fertility. CRISPR targeting and RNA interference of CCY caused male sterility. Surprisingly, however, our CCY mutants were sterile even in the presence of an extra wild-type Y chromosome, suggesting that perturbation of the Y chromosome can lead to dominant sterility. Our approach provides an important step toward understanding the complex functions of the Y chromosome and parsing which functions are accomplished by genes vs. repeat elements.

A dynamic development of sewer networks and municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) leads to the formation a large amounts of municipal sewage sludges (MSSs) which have to be disposed. One of the MSS disposal practices is thermal conversion in mono-incineration plants. Nowadays, there are 11 such installations in Poland, with the total capacity 160,300 Mg d.w. of MSSs per year. This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of wastes generated in Polish MSS mono-incineration plants. As a consequence of MSSs incineration, various types of waste are generated including, for example, bottom and fly ash, dust or solid waste. The most valuable waste is sewage sludge ash (SSA), which can be used in other industries, as fertilizer or construction sectors. In the circular economy (CE) model, SSA should be treated as a secondary source of raw materials, such as phosphates (replacement of nutrients by P-rich ashes in fertilizers) or sand (replacement of sand by ashes in construction materials). Current practices of SSA management include landfilling, recovery at WWTPs or management by external companies (recovery, disposal or collection). To preserve the utility value of SSA, it should be stored selectively, and then directed to raw materials recovery. This creates the possibility of turning waste into a secondary resource, after meeting certain conditions which depend on which product the waste is directed to. Moreover, this waste management practice is recommended in the Polish documents regarding the usage of SSA, and it can strengthen the accomplishment of the European Green Deal, which is the newest roadmap for making the EU’s economy sustainable and circular.

No one knows about the future of study in Old Testament theology. Two things seem clear. First, we are likely to be surprised by new emerging methods and perspectives, new critical judgments, and new interpretive extrapolations. If we think back to about 1990, Old Testament theology had reached what seemed to be dead end; and then in the next decade, to some great extent due to the influence of Brevard Childs, we witnessed a great revival of study in new directions. I anticipate that we might, at any time, witness the same sort of newness among us the shape of which we cannot foresee. Second, we are sure to continue rich diversity in method, perspective, critical judgment, and interpretive extrapolation, influenced as each of us is by social location, habit, conviction, and tradition. More than such surprise and such continuing diversity we cannot know.

Abstract. In 2017 we published a seminal research study in the International Archives of the Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing & Spatial Information Sciences about how smart city tools, solutions and applications underpinned historical and cultural heritage of cities at that time (Angelidou et al. 2017). We now return to investigate the progress that has been made during the past three years, and specifically whether the weak substantiation of cultural heritage in smart city strategies that we observed in 2017 has been improved. The newest literature suggests that smart cities should capitalize on local strengths and give prominence to local culture and traditions and provides a handful of solutions to this end. However, a more thorough examination of what has been actually implemented reveals a (still) rather immature approach. The smart city cases that were selected for the purposes of this research include Tarragona (Spain), Budapest (Hungary) and Karlsruhe (Germany). For each one we collected information regarding the overarching structure of the initiative, the positioning of cultural heritage and the inclusion of heritage-related smart city applications. We then performed a comparative analysis based on a simplified version of the Digital Strategy Canvas. Our findings suggest that a rich cultural heritage and a broader strategic focus on touristic branding and promotion are key ingredients of smart city development in this domain; this is a commonality of all the investigated cities. Moreover, three different strategy architectures emerge, representing the different interplays among the smart city, cultural heritage and sustainable urban development. We conclude that a new generation of smart city initiatives is emerging, in which cultural heritage is of increasing importance. This generation tends to associate cultural heritage with social and cultural values, liveability and sustainable urban development.

AbstractAt the 1998 IAU Symposium on the Magellanic Clouds, Dr. Robert Petre observed that we were reaching a time where it was possible “to study the MC SNRs at a level of detail comparable with many Galactic remnants”, while retaining the benefits of a global view in the MCs. Over the past decade, many researchers have taken advantage of these newly accessible populations. New MC-wide surveys at various wavelengths have enabled broader searches for SNR candidates, extending our census of MC SNRs to less prominent objects — older SNRs, SNRs in complex regions, et cetera. The use of light-echoes has provided a new avenue to probe young SNRs. Higher spatial and spectral resolutions in many wavelength regimes have enabled detailed studies of individual remnants, revealing progenitor types, pulsar-wind nebulae, expansion details, and environmental effects.Perhaps the newest conceptual development is the increasing use of the MC SNRs to study physical problems of wider significance to many fields of astronomy. For example, researchers have examined the energy and hot gas inputs of MC SNRs to the ISM, including their collective effects within superbubbles, in order to evaluate their effects on stellar feedback cycles in a galaxy. Other scientists have investigated the fraction of SNR energies going to the acceleration of cosmic rays, which has significant implications for the role of SNRs in cosmic-ray production. Most recently, the onslaught of Spitzer data has led to new exploration of dust in MC SNRs, allowing us to probe dust creation, depletion, and destruction in the MC SNR populations. In summary, the study of SNRs in the MCs appears to have “come of age” over the past decade, becoming a mature field with rich potential for future scientific work.

Current theories of language processing emphasize prediction as a mechanism to facilitate comprehension, which contrasts with the state of the field a few decades ago, when prediction was rarely mentioned. We argue that the field of psycholinguistics would benefit from revisiting these earlier theories of comprehension that attempted to explain integration and the processes underlying the formation of rich representations of linguistic input and that emphasized informational newness over redundancy. We suggest further that integration and anticipation may be complementary mechanisms that operate on elaborated, coherent discourse representations, supporting enhanced comprehension and memory. In addition, the traditional emphasis on language as a tool for communication implies that much linguistic content will be nonredundant; moreover, the purpose of anticipation is probably not to permit the prediction of exact lexical or syntactic forms but instead to induce a state of preparedness that allows the comprehender to be receptive to new information, thus facilitating its processing.

Erectile dysfunction is defined as the inability to get or keep an erection that is sufficient for satisfactory sexual intercourse. It is one of the most prevalent sexual dysfunctions in men, usually correlated with aging. This pathology is generally associated with repercussions in the psychological and social well-being of the patient and his relationship with his partner. This way, it is considered an important cause of a decrease in quality of life. The treatments available today, in most cases, solve the symptoms, however, none of them can reverse the physiopathological basis of erectile dysfunction. In addition to that, they can also interfere with the spontaneity of sexual intercourse, which may be an obstacle to their use. The search for new therapeutic alternatives for erectile dysfunction is in constant development. As sexuality is an important element in human life, an update on these therapeutic advances becomes pertinent, since they could eventually change the paradigm of treatment of this pathology. This work aims to produce a review of the evidence on recent therapeutic advances in erectile dysfunction, as low-intensity shockwave therapy, botulinum toxin treatment, and platelet-rich plasma therapy. This way, a wide bibliography research will be conducted, through online databases and relevant manuscripts.

In Tamil language poetry, prose, essay, novel and short stories taking its reformed spirit according to the newness of the current scenario.There was a rejuvenated spirit among the Tamil language speakers to carry certain words for many generations. It was a gift of all lovers of Tamil speakers today. In one sense the researcher on Tamil language finds, there are alien words weeds to spoil the Tamil original word usages. Only the new innovations in Tamil literary genres and by naming the scientific and technical innovations alone safeguard the Tamil language vocabularies in rhetorical sense. Poetry from Classical Literature is not a comfortable one to read now. The poetic aesthetic sense from classic should be modified according to the present generation to read and feel what it was. The words from Classical Literature fail to give its functional message. For that one needs interpreters, so the need of the commentators and the usage of Dictionaries are preferable for our everyday communication. This paper spots the words like kadavul (God), arisi (rice), manjal (yellow) all from the tamil classical literature are still in function.
