Over the recent years enormous changes in the telecommunication services, techniques, regulations and markets have taken place. However, even with many new exciting services the telephony service is still popular. This paper provides empirical traffic data and observations of telephony traffic patterns in mobile and IP telephony. They are presented and compared with old telephony patterns from Public Switched Telephone Networks (PSTN). The question is whether the characterization of telephony traffic should be reconsidered because new technology and markets might have changed the service and usage. How is the telephony usage patterns influenced by technology changes from fixed to mobile phones, changes in quality from fixed-line phone to mobile and IP telephone, changes in tariffs from usage based to flat-rate subscriptions, and appearance of alternative message based communication means? This paper presents a comparison between recent mobile and IP telephony measurements and telephony measurement obtained nearly four decades ago. The traffic patterns are compared and significant changes in the daily and weekly traffic profiles are observed. In particular, the profile of international calls has significantly changed and does not resemblance any of the standard traffic profiles from ITU E.523. The busy hour call holding times are fitted a log-Normal distribution for domestic and Hyper Exponential for international calls. Furthermore, the average call holding times show significant variations over the day in flat-rate subscriptions. Finally, the results indicate that the Short Message Service (SMS) seems to serve as a supplement to phone calls, in particular in the evenings, which might change call holding time distribution and traffic intensities.

Abstract This article analyzes the interrelationship among technology transfer mechanisms using data specific to the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). An overview of the history of NIST and US policies that emphasize the economic importance of technology transfer are discussed. The empirical analysis focuses on NIST investments in research and development (R&D) and the cascading impact of those investments on new inventions disclosed, new patent applications, new patents issued and new patent licenses; and accounting for the effects of R&D on these three investments, an overall estimate of the R&D elasticity of new patent licenses is calculated to be 0.7976. The article concludes with a policy-focused summary of the implications of the empirical findings, and a suggested road map for future research related to technology transfer from US federal laboratories.

This research investigates the effects of entrepreneurial orientation and external technology acquisition on the performance of technology-based new ventures in the context of a transitional economy. An analysis of the cross-sectional data from 123 Chinese technology-based new ventures was conducted. The results of the analysis support the contention that both the acquisition of external technology and entrepreneurial orientation improve new ventures’ performance. Additionally, the interaction of entrepreneurial orientation and external technology acquisition positively moderates the relationship between entrepreneurial orientation and performance of technology-based new ventures. Overall, this study contributes to our enhanced understanding of the complex relationship among entrepreneurial orientation, external technology acquisition and firm performance under transitional economic conditions. Firms from emerging economies, especially technologybased new ventures, may find the study findings useful in guiding their decision on external technology acquisition.

In conjunction with technologies such as horizontal drilling, hydraulic fracturing has transformed U.S. and world energy outlooks by adding reserves from unconventional resources. Fracturing was developed by experimentation and experience. This study empirically analyzes fracturing data for wells in the Williston Basin in North Dakota and Montana, focusing on firms' ability to improve well production over time through collaboration. Results suggest that producers gain from experience with fracturing and that proprietary additives are not generally correlated with greater production but have value for some firms. Experiential gains are stronger for operators than for contractors, but some operator-contractor pairings have productive value.

Nowadays computing systems are able to learn, reason, hear and see. Enormous amount of new opportunities are created by artificial Intelligence. Artificial Intelligence has given two promising technologies. One such technology is NLP. Text Mining is also a promising area. These technologies enable and empower users to transform/map the key content in texts lying in documents into quantitative insight or to draw conclusion. Document Classification using supervised and unsupervised learning has a huge list of applications. Soft computing techniques like fuzzy logic helps to find a practical solution. This work proposes a methodology which is found to be significant while clustering unstructured data. The empirical analysis is included to demonstrate the improvement in document representation by using sparsification. Experiments are conducted on 5500 emails. Proposed methodology showed a significant improvement in representation of unstructured data.

Whether computer assisted data collection methods should be used for survey data collection is no longer an issue. Most professional research organizations, commercial, government and academic, are adopting these new methods with enthusiasm. Computer assisted telephone interviewing (CATI) is most prevalent, and computer assisted personal interviewing (CAPI) is rapidly gaining in popularity. Also, new forms of electronic reporting of data using computers, telephones and voice recognition technology are emerging. This paper begins with a taxonomy of current computer assisted data collection methods. It then reviews conceptual and theoretical arguments and empirical evidence on such topics as: (1) respondents and interviewer acceptance of new techniques, (2) effect of computer assisted interviewing on data quality, (3) consequences for survey costs and (4) centralized vs. decentralized deployment of CATI.

There has been an increasing interest among academicians pertaining to the relationship between internet user and economic growth. The adoption of internet creates effective platform of business trade that provides expediency and convenience in doing business globally and thus results in tremendous dependency on technology to expand business locally and internationally. Hence, the use of internet plays a crucial role in the economic development of a country and undoubtedly to a certain extent affects economic growth of a nation. This paper aims to examine the relationship between internet user and economic growth in seven selected Southeast Asia countries. Panel Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) (PMG) model is employed in examining the relationship between internet user and economic growth from year 1997 to 2013. Consistent with endogenous growth theory proposed by Romer (1986), this study reveals that internet user and trade positively and significantly affect the economic growth in selected Southeast Asia countries. The increase in the use of internet thus is philanthropic to the users and can lead to faster economic growth. Worldwide acceptance of this new information technology makes internet indubitably requires exceptional attention by promoting and encouraging its use particularly amongst individual users and enterprises to improve their standard of living and for the betterment of their countries in handling daily activities more effectively.

SYNOPSIS A call to action has been sounded in accounting: Become a profession utilizing data analytics or become a profession bound for the history books. Accounting firms and corporations are investing in data analytics capabilities, but it is not clear whether accounting professionals are following their lead. Practitioner press indicates accountants resist the move beyond Excel even as organizations hire data scientists rather than accountants. This empirical study uses Status Quo Bias Theory to examine the resistance to data analytics technology by accounting and finance professionals. Surprisingly results indicate the perceived value does not mediate the effect of switching benefits and costs on resistance. Rather, switching benefits and perceived value are aligned as a single factor to reduce resistance while switching costs directly increase resistance. Researchers have focused substantial efforts toward data analytics in education and business. This study examines the purchase of nonaudit services by SEC audit clients. Effective February 5, 2001, the SEC has required the disclosure and description of audit, nonaudit, and information technology fees paid to the incumbent auditor. The SEC enacted this rule due to concerns about auditor independence. Our study reviews these disclosed fees contained in the proxy statements of 2,795 firms since the effective date of the new SEC disclosure rules. The results indicate that the actual incidence and magnitude of nonaudit fees is much greater than the information relied upon during the SEC rule-making deliberations. Consequently, our study calls into question the data used during SEC rule-making process, as well as the clarity of the current audit and nonaudit service distinctions. Our results also suggest that the nonaudit service landscape has changed dramatically since the last period of publicly available fee data (1978–1981). Our results provide at least two public policy implications. First, the SEC should maintain, at a minimum, the current disclosure environment. Second, the SEC should strive to improve the clarity and granularity of the disclosures. Our results also indicate a clear need for additional research regarding the provision of nonaudit services.

Purpose – Globalization, increasing intensity of competition and access to capital markets have enabled emerging market firms to explore inorganic growth through merger and acquisitions (M & A) over the past two decades. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the role of firm-specific factors on M & A propensity in Chinese technology firms. Design/methodology/approach – The authors analyze data on 152 firms from Mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan over a period of 2001-2011 using logistic and count data regression. Findings – The authors find that the factors that influence M & As in these firms differ from the established factors found in M & A in developed economies. Large, low-debt firms have higher acquisition propensity irrespective of their technological strength and they tend to be serial acquirer too. Originality/value – The findings provide new insights into inorganic growth behavior of emerging market technology firms and indicate presence of both exploitative and exploratory motives.

Purpose It should be highlighted that innovation is related to the absorption of knowledge, dynamicity and market orientation, with these elements seeking to aid efficiency, increasing firms’ competitive advantage. This study aims to gauge the influence of absorptive capacity, dynamic capability and market orientation on new product performance in Brazilian technology-based firms. Design/methodology/approach The study was characterized as quantitative, using primary data from Brazilian technology-based firms, as they are dynamic contexts that stimulate the absorption and exchange of knowledge and other organizational resources. It should be highlighted that this study received funding from the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development. The research hypotheses were empirically tested, confirming the relationship between dynamic capability and absorptive capacity, market orientation and new product performance. Findings Regarding the empirical contribution of the research results, it could be argued that for the purpose of improving performance in innovation, reflected in new product performance, companies need to develop strategies that correspond to market demand. Furthermore, these empirical findings provide an integrating view of the constructs and identify the importance of companies anticipating and responding to the demands of their customers quickly so that they can enjoy better performance. Therefore, companies need to adjust their processes, resources and capabilities to obtain better results, and for this, the involvement of managers is fundamental because they are the only ones with the clout to stimulate such initiatives. This approach favors recognizing and valuing absorptive capacity and dynamic capabilities and helps to identify new constructs such as responsive and proactive market orientation, which need to be adequately developed by managers to create competitive advantages that stem from better new product performance. Research limitations/implications A limitation of the study is that it does not address a specific analysis of the sector in which the technology-based firms (TBFs) under study operate. No tests were conducted regarding whether it is possible to perceive different structural paths for absorptive capacity, market orientation, dynamic capability and new product performance according to the sector of the TBFs. Practical implications Regarding the empirical contribution of the research results, it could be argued that for the purpose of improving performance in innovation, reflected in new product performance, companies need to develop strategies that correspond to market demand. Furthermore, these empirical findings provide an integrating view of the constructs and identify the importance of companies anticipating and responding to the demands of their customers quickly so that they can enjoy better performance. Therefore, companies need to adjust their processes, resources and capabilities to obtain better results and, for this, the involvement of managers is fundamental because they are the only ones with the clout to stimulate such initiatives. Social implications One of the main contributions of the study is that it provides an empirical demonstration that on its own absorptive capacity cannot boost new product performance. For this purpose, it needs to be combined with dynamic capabilities. Through this proposed model, it was possible to characterize the antecedent relationship of absorptive capacity and illustrate its relationship with dynamic capabilities. Another relevant theoretical contribution is the statistical proof of the positive relationship of both proactive and responsive market orientation with dynamic capability, and that dynamic capability has a positive influence on new product performance, which will generate better financial performance of TBFs. Originality/value As a contribution to the field, it was empirically demonstrated that on its own absorptive capacity cannot improve new product performance. For this to occur, it must be combined with dynamic capabilities. Through the proposed model, it is possible to characterize the antecedent relationship of absorptive capacity and illustrate its relationship with dynamic capability.

New Technology Based Firms (NTBF) operate in high-velocity environments that make considerable demands about the speed of strategic choices. This study draws upon strategic decision-making and organization theories to propose that strategic decision making speed mediates the relation between personal, organizational and environmental factors and performance. Hypotheses were theoretically developed and tested with data from an empirical investigation of Mexican NTBF. Measures of personal characteristics, organization structure, business environment, strategic decision speed and performance were collected from 103 Technology Founder Managers at the end of 2012. The results confirmed that strategic decision making speed influences the performance of NTBF and mediates the relation of uncertainty, CEO model, dynamism and hostility with firm performance.

By collecting theoretical research and practical cases on the application of big data in agricultural production and management at home and abroad, this article is based on the actual production and management of rural farmers, deeply analyzes the current situation of big data construction, and finds a model suitable for the development of local agricultural big data. We establish an agricultural big data system suitable for rural characteristics and provide suggestions and suggestions. First of all, this article is based on actual research. Through interviews and questionnaires on the occupational differentiation and agricultural production management of local farmers, the relevant theoretical connections are made, through descriptive statistical analysis of data, and Stata is used for intersectionality. This study uses modular construction methods to build a complete industrialized farm house system and, on this basis, combines the nature of family industry and family intergenerational relationship to divide the unit types and combinations of industrialized modular farm houses. In corresponding analysis and discussion, the test shows that the professional differentiation of farmers is related to the willingness of agricultural production management and agricultural production management behavior. Secondly, this paper uses logistic model to carry out empirical analysis of influencing factors and conducts research on the influencing factors of agricultural production management willingness and agricultural production management behaviors of farmers with different occupational differentiation degrees and models agricultural production management willingness and agricultural production management behaviors, respectively, for empirical testing. Farmers’ professional differentiation has related influence factors on agricultural production management willingness and land transfer behavior. After analyzing the results of the model, this article concludes that the occupational differentiation of farmers has a significant impact on the willingness of agricultural production management, and the specific manifestations are significant in many aspects such as farmers’ age, education level, whether they have nonagricultural employment skills, and the number of family agricultural labors. The professional differentiation of farmers also has a significant impact on agricultural production management behavior, which is specifically manifested in many aspects such as farmers’ age, education level, nonagricultural employment skills, and geographical location of land.

With the advent of the information age, the way people obtain information has changed profoundly. The wave of informationization in higher education has also come with it, and the teaching mode, teaching content, and teaching form are constantly innovated. How to organically integrate information technology into education teaching in order to care for learners’ learning experience and promote the cultivation of new talents is an issue that current educational technology researchers need to pay great attention to. This paper first builds a complete blended teaching model of public English for higher education, but its application effect needs to be further examined. This paper is an investigation in the background of the current era to build a blended teaching model. Based on the continuous development of the era, the ideology and application technology of this field will keep upgrading, so the teaching model also needs to be changed and updated according to the characteristics of the development of the era. The investigation of mixed teaching modes is not permanent. The investigation of the mixed teaching mode is not permanent. At present, only a few courses apply the blended teaching mode. On the basis of the continuous updating of teaching concepts and the latest technologies, it is foreseen that the focus of subsequent investigations will be on the individualized development of the blended teaching mode.

Data mining provides the methodology and technology to transform huge amount of data into useful information for decision making. It is a powerful process to extract knowledge and discover new patterns embedded in large data sets. Data mining has been increasingly used in medicine, particularly in cardiology. In fact, data mining applications can greatly benefits all parts involved in cardiology such as patients, cardiologists and nurses. This article aims to perform a systematic mapping study so as to analyze and synthesize empirical studies on the application of data mining techniques in cardiology. A total of 142 articles published between 2000 and 2015 were therefore selected, studied and analyzed according to the four following criteria: year and channel of publication, research type, medical task and empirical type. The results of this mapping study are discussed and a list of recommendations for researchers and cardiologists is provided.

This study attempts to explore the role of consumer's perception of quality within the new technology adoption process which is given little attention in the field of Information systems. In this regard, the authors developed an exploratory conceptual model in the level of consumer perception by exploring the antecedent of perceived quality. Three factors are introduced as determinants of perceived quality: perceived usefulness, perceived risk and trialability. Moreover, the authors investigate cross national differences among three countries including China, Korea and Japan by estimating our proposed model. An empirical study is conducted with analysis of the adoption mechanism for a new innovative product. Data analysis results support the authors proposed hypotheses, and significant differences are found among the three countries in regards to the new technology adoption process.

So a technology foresight to new energy industry is important for energy saving and energy materials. In this paper, an indexes system for technology foresight of new energy industry is built. An empirical study is given through Shaanxi’s data, and the technology fields and tasks of new energy industry during future five years are forecasted by questionnaire survey and Delphi method. This study can provide government helpful advices to regulate development trend and adjust structure of energy industry and energy saving.

Recent years have witnessed the advancement of the Internet of Things (IoT) and its emergence as a technology that could revolutionize many businesses. It helps considerably in creating data-driven business models with the insights it provides. IoT systems are deployed in data collection, monitor processes, provide insights and allow businesses to make data-driven productivity improvements. However, IoT systems are often experiencing data loss due to inevitable failures ranging from devices, networks, to the application layer, especially in scarce infrastructure resources environments. Data loss might be unrecoverable in many circumstances. As such, this research presents a blockchain based IoT model (framework) with the aim of circumventing data loss. We envisioned IoT blockchain technology in enhancing data veracity with data loss tolerance. That is, to have blockchain enhancing the IoT data veracity by leveraging on the features existed in its peer-to-peer network (P2P) and distributed ledger storage technology (DLT). Additionally, the edge computing of IoT blockchain technology is also conceptually workable; with intelligent small computing resources, it opens up a new era of bringing the intelligence of data collection, connectivity, computation and storage into the edge/device layer. A novel IoT blockchain strength monitoring system is also been studied to further enhance data veracity; this is achieved through a capacitance monitoring on the IoT blockchain system. The empirical results show that the proposed IoT blockchain with a strength monitoring model can alleviate data loss and thus enhance data veracity with data loss tolerance.

Universities are now responsible for economic and social development. This new mission is transforming the traditional university into an entrepreneurial university. This entrepreneurial activity has mainly been carried out by transferring technology to industry, in particular, by patenting. The objective of this paper is to understand why some Spanish universities are more successful than others at patenting. In order to determine the factors that influence the patenting activity, we used a sample made up of 47 Spanish Public On-Campus Universities existing in 2003. Firstly, we applied the Poisson model. Secondly, after finding overdispersion in the data, the two approximations of the binomial negative were estimated (NEGBIN I and NEGBIN II). Lastly, we compared the results obtained with the three regression models. The results show that university patents are significantly positively associated with research funding, university size, technology transfer experience and resources and scientific areas with a greater market orientation. On the contrary, our results support the idea that university's research quality has a negative effect on the patent outputs. This study contributes to the literature on university patenting activity. First, there are no similar empirical studies about Spanish universities. Second, our findings provide quantitative evidence of the importance of funding research and university support policies in patent production. As a consequence, we can set out several policies to improve the dissemination of scientific knowledge and technology transfer activities.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore the drivers of change in product evolution and to examine the relationship between company performance and active management of the driving forces behind product changes. Design/methodology/approach – An exploratory and qualitative research approach was adopted to explore the drivers of change and the definition of active management of forces. In the second stage, an analytical and quantitative research approach was adopted to examine the relationship between company performance and active management measures. A questionnaire survey was used in both stages to collect data. Findings – Contrary to the traditional product evolutionary cycle, influential bodies (e.g. NGOs and media) are found to be another force that drives product evolution, in addition to managerial creativity, market factors and government mediation. Except for government mediation, the active management of all these forces is found to be associated with company performance. Research limitations/implications – The research was conducted in the real estate industry of Hong Kong. The particular nature of the industry would have a bearing on the outcome of the research. Extending the research to other industries is highly recommended. Practical implications – The research leads to a number of management practices that define the active management of product change driving forces. The implementation of these practices may have a positive impact on improving company performance, especially in brand recognition. Originality/value – This is the first empirical test of a new product evolutionary cycle that incorporates influential bodies as one of the driving forces. The approach to correlate company performance with active management of forces is also a pioneer one that gives useful insight on why some firms can maintain leadership in the market in terms of brand recognition.

Development processes in which software is integrated in hardware products are explored with the aim of finding obstacles to the development process and hypothesising how they can be dealt with. Empirical data are based on case studies in nine manufacturing companies chosen to have a varied amount of software in their products and experience of technology integration. Results indicate that obstacles in experienced companies concern processes, structures and resources but few culture-related issues. In companies with short experience of software integration in hardware development, cultural aspects were important. Where new technology played a strategic role in the product function, organisational issues such as structures, processes and cultural differences formed obstacles. Where technology only had a supporting role, resource-related obstacles such as lack of competencies were more important. Managerial measures tended to be partly related to the different types of obstacles, partly to the strategic situation of the company.

Every technology should be geared to improve the quality of users' lives. The important pre-requisite is to measure the contribution of the technology to quality of life reliably and validly. This study provides a theoretical and empirical basis for the development of better measures for the contribution of a mobile data service technology to the quality of users' lives. The reliability and validity were verified through online surveys in Korea and Japan. The survey results indicated that critical mobile data services could be identified using the measures. Moreover, the critical services were found to be different between Korea and Japan.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to develop and empirically evaluate an adoption model for technology-based services (TBS) that integrates a customer’s willingness to co-create (WCC) as mediator complementing the well-known individual differences and innovation characteristics in predicting customer adoption of TBS. Design/methodology/approach – The manuscript uses structural equation modeling to analyze survey data from two empirical studies (n=781 and n=181). Findings – The empirical results show that WCC represents a key mediator between established antecedent predictors (innovation characteristics and individual differences) and the likelihood of TBS adoption. Additionally, the analysis reveals that WCC can even better explain and predict adoption intention of TBS than the commonly used individual differences and innovation characteristics. Finally, the results also suggest that a lack of customers’ WCC may help to explain persuasion-decision discrepancies within TBS adoption. Research limitations/implications – As the data of this manuscript pertains to the mobile apps market, future research might test the modified technology adoption model in other TBS contexts as well. While the studies used cross-sectional data, it would be interesting to assess the differential influence of WCC across the stages in the adoption process using longitudinal data. Practical implications – The findings on WCC provide managers with a new set of factors (apart from known antecedent predictors like individual differences and innovation characteristics) to optimize TBS adoption. Originality/value – This manuscript is the first to examine an adoption model for TBS that integrates a customer’s WCC. Furthermore, the findings provide first empirical evidence that WCC can help to explain persuasion-decision discrepancies within TBS adoption.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to assess the combined impact of radio frequency identification (RFID), Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and Blockchain technologies on supply chain transparency (SCT). Design/methodology/approach Data from 211 US manufacturing managers is analyzed using a covariance-based structural equation modeling methodology. Findings The structural model fits the data relatively well. RFID technology directly and positively impact both IIoT and Blockchain technologies which, in turn, directly and positively impact SCT. RFID technology indirectly affects SCT through both IIoT technology and Blockchain technology. Research limitations/implications This study is the first to empirically assess the impact of RFID, IIoT and Blockchain technologies on SCT. First-wave empirical studies must be replicated to support generalization of the findings. Practical implications This study provides empirical evidence to support the implementation of a combination of RFID, IIoT and Blockchain technologies as infrastructure necessary to achieve end-to-end SCT. Originality/value New measurement scales for IIoT technology utilization and Blockchain technology utilization are developed and assessed for validity and reliability. This is the first study to assess the combined impact of RFID, IIoT and Blockchain technologies on SCT.

Analyzing 474 cases of firms going public in the German capital between 1892 and 1913, we show that innovative firms could rely on the Berlin stock market as a source of financing. Our data also reveal that initial public offerings (IPO) of innovative firms were characterized by particularly low underpricing, comparatively high first trading prices, and no long-run underperformance. We interpret these empirical results as evidence for the surprising fact that in the period of the Second Industrial Revolution the Berlin stock exchange was already a well-functioning market for new technology. In order to improve the effect of English teaching, this paper combines data mining algorithms to construct an intelligent learning system. Moreover, starting from the actual situation, this paper combines the actual needs of English teaching to construct a blended learning system framework. Blended learning provides a new idea for English teaching. As a result, the purpose of this work is to do some empirical research on how to successfully implement blended learning in college English classes. The findings of the study suggest that blended learning may help students improve their English application skills. Furthermore, this article discovered that students’ independent learning capacity, learning passion, and systematic comprehension of maritime equipment were enhanced to some amount using data mining and cloud classroom blended learning resource construction and teaching practise. Finally, this work integrated theoretical and experimental research to demonstrate that the system developed in this paper has a specific impact.

Based on the data of large and medium-sized industrial enterprises put forward by National Bureau of Statistics of China, over the period 1991-2007, this paper empirically investigates the dynamic econometrical relationship among R&D, technology transfer, including imports of technology and purchase of domestic technology and innovation performance which is denoted by new product sales, using ADF unit root test, co-integration analysis and granger causality test. The empirical research results indicate that innovation performance is granger causing R&D and technology transfer, while R&D and technology transfer are not granger causing innovation performance. Neither the feedback effect between R&D and innovation performance nor that between technology transfer and innovation performance is occurring.

Summary In this work, we developed two models of fracture conductivity in the presence of proppant-pack damage. The models are derived from the analysis of experiments relating dynamic fracture conductivity to flowback rate, reservoir temperature, polymer loading, presence of breaker, closure stress, and proppant concentration. The first model is purely empirical, and it is modeled after fracture-conductivity studies conducted in previous work. The experimental design and planning table were derived from fractional-factorial designs. This meant that we could uniquely quantify the effect of all the dependent variables and also ensure that the factors are not correlated. We tested the empirical model for adequacy—that is, ensuring the model residuals are normally distributed with no obvious trend and approximately constant variance. Because empirical models are generally constrained by the data on which they are built, we developed a semiempirical model dependent on dimensional analysis and nonlinear regression. Dimensionless products from the dimensional analysis procedure form the backbone of this semiempirical model. We used subset-regression analysis to determine the optimal regression model and found that model was adequate. We also found two dimensionless groups and used them to develop the semiempirical model. We thereafter corrected the semiempirical model for the effect of temperature. Both the purely empirical model and the semiempirical model match experimental data with reasonable accuracy. These models can be used as a first approximation for the short-term fracture conductivity of field hydraulic fractures. We also present methodology by which engineers can develop empirical models, assess uncertainty, and test for regression-model adequacy given noisy data.

Recent shifts in technology have created a data-rich environment and made it necessary for firms to develop new capabilities to cope with these changes. To address this challenge, this study introduces marketing-enabled data analytics capability, a specific type of information technology (IT) capability that enables firms to better understand customer needs and achieve a competitive advantage in the digital era. Using empirical results collected via online survey, we argue that marketing-enabled data analytics capability, which comprises data analytics infrastructure, marketing-oriented analytics expertise, and IT–marketing social capital, positively influences a firm’s organisational agility and innovation success. Moreover, the results show that organisational agility partially mediates the relationship between marketing-enabled data analytics capability and innovation success. By developing the construct of marketing-enabled data analytics capability, this paper lays a foundation for future research on this new type of IT capability, which is critical in the digitization process.

Six research questions are emphasized, drawing on growth and convergence research. Based on the theoretical framework of consumer decision-making behaviour, an empirical study of the adoption of renewable energy in Malaysia was conducted.Design/methodology/approachA total of 501 residential users from the Klang Valley participated in this study. The data were analysed using partial least square (PLS) with Smart PLS 3.0 software.FindingsThe results indicated that the perceived utility of new technology, perceived utility of renewable energy and the perceived benefit of new technology were seen as the drivers of the adoption of renewable energy. At the same time, two inhibitor constructs, namely, perceived risk and perceived no need, were not seen to create a negative connection relating to the adoption of renewable energy. By contrast, as hypothesized, the perceived expense was the only factor that negatively correlated with the intentions to adopt renewable energy. To foster the intention to adopt renewable energy by residential users, more effort should be expended on capitalizing on the constructs of perceived benefits of new technology and the perceived utility of this new technology.Originality/valueThe current study contributes to the use of renewable energy in the country and indirectly to global renewable energy strategies.

This research aimed to: develop a model for vocational instructors’ acceptance of online instruction after they had arranged online instruction for one year; and investigate the consistency of this model using the empirical evidence gained from 1,818 vocational instructors from five regions in Thailand: the Northern Region, the Northeastern Region, the Central Region, the Eastern Region and Bangkok, and the Southern Region. The research instrument used to collect the data was a questionnaire on the vocational instructors’ acceptance of online instruction. The data were analysed using construct validity and the consistency of the causal relationship model. The research findings revealed that social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in the vocational instructors’ adjusted attitudes towards online instruction for the better. This adjustment directly affected some changes in the instructors’ behaviour in physical classroom instruction to online instruction in the following period. New technologies are giving very interesting potential to the personalization of products and services, in particular of mobile services. The study of the literature shows that technology-based personalization is an important factor in the adoption of mobile services. However, previous researchers are not unanimous as to the nature of this role: some studies confirm the moderating or mediating effect of personalization on the relationship between the adoption factors stated in the Unified Technology Acceptance and Utilization Theory (UTAUT) and the intention to adopt technology-based services. Other researchers consider that personalization rather exerts a causal relationship on the adoption of technology-based services. This paper undertakes a literature review with the aim of clarifying the impact of new technologies, such as artificial intelligence, Big Data, Internet of Things and Block Chain, on the personalization of mobile banking services. Moreover, this study presents a synthesis of previous research examining the role of personalization in relation to the factors affecting adoption and the intention to adopt mobile banking. Finally, this research proposes a conceptual model that can serve as a basis for future empirical research in the context of mobile services. Results and discussion could guide future empirical research in this area.

Data collected from 255 respondents, mainly seafarers (captain and officers) and shore- based ship managers revealed that emergence of the internet on ships is influenced by perceived usefulness, organisation readiness, external pressure and technology penetration. It is also witnessed that cost of internet on ships has an effect on the penetration of the internet and new technology. The emergence of the internet on ships provides an effective communication link with all stakeholders of the ship, enhances safety and security with real time data on cargo, incidents, piracy, terrorism and weather conditions. It facilitates timely delivery of stores and spare parts for ship repairs and maintenance, thus providing immense satisfaction to all stakeholders. It thus has a significant impact on the industry.

An empirical model for TSS event mean concentrations in storm weather discharges has been derived from the analysis of data sets collected in two experimental catchments (Chassieu, separate system and Ecully, combined system) in Lyon, France. Preliminary tests have shown that the values of TSS EMCs were linked to the variable X =TP ×ADWP (TP rainfall depth, ADWP antecedent dry weather period) with two distinct behaviours under and above a threshold value of X named λ: EMCs are increasing if X < λ and are decreasing if X > λ. An empirical equation is proposed for both behaviours. A specific calibration method is used to calibrate λ while the 4 other parameters of the model are calibrated by means of the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm. The calibration results obtained with 8 events in both sites indicate that the model calibration is satisfactory: Nash Sutcliffe coefficients are all above 0.7. Monte Carlo simulations indicate a low variability of the model parameters for both sites. The model verification with 5 events in Chassieu shows maximum levels of uncertainty of approximately 20%, equivalent to levels of uncertainty observed in the calibration phase.

With the rapid development of information technology, the financial sharing service is a new type of financial management that saves human capital, changes management concepts, improves management efficiency, and improves the internal control environment by centralizing the simple and repetitive work of enterprises. Financial shared services will strengthen the innovation capabilities of enterprises in terms of financial personnel, management personnel, and internal control environment. Therefore, in order to explore whether the new management model of financial shared services can bring about an improvement in the level of corporate innovation, this article starts from the perspective of financial shared services, takes A-share listed companies as the research sample, and uses the DID regression model to empirically analyze the relationship between financial shared services and the correlation between corporate innovation performance. The results of the research show that implementing financial sharing service can significantly improve enterprise innovation performance.

This study investigated how employees’ information technology (IT) competency is associated with employee agility via perceived task structure. Most scholar’s emphasis is on the impact of IT competency on individual work performance; however, it seems as if no attention has been given to explore the relationship between IT competency on employee’s agility through perceived task structure. This research offers and tests a new comprehensive model that links the individual’s IT competency with perceived task structure and employee agility. Data were gathered from 167 representatives who used various IT applications for daily work routines in the organization. Findings showed that IT competency is positively related to task interdependence and autonomy. Task autonomy also has significant effect on employee agility; however, task interdependence has shown insignificant effect on employee agility. Furthermore, work expertise positively moderates the relationship between IT competency and perceived task structure. Theoretical and managerial implications of study are also discussed in the last section.

When this journal was launched in 1992, there was a growing consensus among political and academic leaders that a broad understanding of science and technology was necessary for economic prosperity and democratic governance. This was more of an intuitive judgment than an empirical one. After 30 years of data collection and analysis, it appears that these early expectations were largely correct, but the value of the last three decades of social and psychological research is that we now have a firmer empirical basis for these beliefs and expectations. This essay outlines the impact of the growth of science and technology and the development of new information technologies that have changed the ways that individuals obtain information. I will discuss the implications of these changes for democracy in the 21st century.

AbstractThis is an overview article regarding artificial intelligence (AI) and its potential normative implications. Technology has always had inherent normative consequences not least due to AI and the use of algorithms. There is a crucial difference between algorithms in a technical sense and from a social-science perspective. It is a question of different orders of normativity—the first related to the algorithm as a technical instruction and the second to the consequences springing from the first order. I call these last-mentioned norms algo norms. These are embedded in the technology and determined by the design of the AI. The outcome is an empirical question. AI and algo norms are moving targets, which call for a novel scientific approach that relates to advanced practice. Law actualizes primarily for preventive reasons in relation to negative aspects of the new technology. No major regulatory scheme for AI exists. In the article, I point out some areas that raise the need for legal regulation. Finally, I comment on three main challenges for the digital development in relation to AI: (1) the energy costs; (2) the singularity point; and (3) the governance problems.

For the purpose of the paper, empirical research was conducted with specially designed questionnaire which was filled by 214 companies worldwide that use Big Data technologies. Results conducted from empirical research showed that companies that use those technologies have implemented many changes in coordination mechanisms in companies. The most important research results are that all available data were integrated in companies, while working processes, activities and decisions were automated. Due to the application of Big Data technologies coordination mechanisms in companies obtained completely new characteristics. Consequently, with improved coordination mechanisms companies were able to improve their strategic and operational activities.

M-learning is the future modern way of learning; so it is important for the students to keep pace with changing technology and time. M-learning has a key position in the development of new teaching methodologies for higher education students. Learning through M-technology is free of limitation; the student can access the knowledge and information at any time and any place. This research paper measures the intention of students to learn from modern and innovative method that is M-technology. For this research paper data is collected from Filipino tertiary students to perform statistical analysis i.e. structural Equation modeling (SEM) using AMOS-21. Results indicate that student's innovative behavior, lecturer influence, usefulness and ease of use of technology has positive impact on student's intention towards M-learning.

Purpose This study aims to analyse organisational capabilities among new technology-based firms (NTBFs) and examine how these capabilities are linked to the firms’ long-term survival. Design/methodology/approach The study leverages a data set of 131 NTBFs located at 16 incubators in Sweden. The first part of the analysis seeks suitable organisational capabilities as determinants of firm survival. The second part is a statistical analysis. The organisational capabilities comprise six variables concerning business experience, financing and international markets. Findings The study comprises two data collections, with the first data collection being conducted in 2005, and the second in 2014. The survival rate for these firms was 55 per cent according to their respective annual reports in 2013. First, this study showed that the logistic regression model that included the three organisational capabilities is significant. Second, one variable is significant at the variable level: business experience. In addition, the control variable firm size is also significant. Originality/value Further empirical research in this area is required as the current research on organisational capabilities is quite limited and mainly conceptual in nature. Very few related studies focus on NTBFs and their survival. This study demonstrates a significant logistic regression model to determine links between organisational capabilities and firm survival.

Remote sensing technology has been widely used in various applications related to natural resources and environment monitoring. In this paper, we evaluated the capability of new Sentinel-2A image to map the distribution and percent cover of seagrass in optically shallow water of Jerowaru coastal area, East Lombok. Seagrass distribution map was produced from radiometrically and geometrically corrected Sentinel-2A image with overall accuracy of 61.9%. Using empirical model, seagrass percent cover was predicted with maximum coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.51 and standard error of estimate (SE) of 19.4%. The results suggest that Sentinel-2A image can be used to perform seagrass mapping time and cost-effectively and can be further improved by incorporating more robust empirical modeling technique.

Insurance telematics is a recent technology-enabled service innovation advanced by insurance companies and adopted by millions of drivers worldwide. This research study explores the insurance telematics technology acceptance and use among the new Millennials generation, which represents both a challenge and an opportunity for insurers. Drawing on the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB), the study uses data from 138 Millennials in the USA to delve into their perceived attitudinal behavior and intention to use insurance telematics. The findings provide empirical confirmation of the integrative and predictive power of the proposed combined theoretical framework (TAM-TPB) to explain insurance telematics adoption and use. The results also suggest a sophistication-level shift in Millennials preferences from functionality evaluation to applicability value sought through the adoption and use. And the findings ascertain the role of perceived enjoyment, trust, and social media as critical factors influencing Millennials attitudinal behavior and intention to use insurance telematics. Considering these results, the authors further discuss implications for scholars and practitioners, and suggest future research directions.

This study extends the literature on self-employment and entrepreneurship by offering empirical insights into the factors that influence technology entrepreneurs at the early stages of the new venture creation process. Specifically, this research focuses on how technology entrepreneurs assess opportunities at the start of the process. Using data from technology entrepreneurs in Ireland, we analyze differences between part-time entrepreneurs and full-time entrepreneurs and discover that not all entrepreneurs attach importance to activities that were previously considered fundamental. While we confirm that opportunity cost, market assessment, and financial analysis are critical and ever-present, we argue that aspiring technology entrepreneurs must be cognizant that when employment-related costs are included as a dimension of opportunity costs, the level and importance of opportunity costs rise for both part-time and full-time entrepreneurs. We also find that whether nascent entrepreneurs work full-time or part-time on the new venture has an impact on which activities are completed and at what point of the process they are completed. For example, we show that part-time entrepreneurs identify markets earlier than full-time entrepreneurs whereas the opposite is true when it comes to financial data preparation. We argue that a greater understanding of these issues will help technology entrepreneurs to make informed decisions. As a result, our findings may influence an aspiring entrepreneur’s decision to start a new venture. They also have ramifications for investors and support services. Consequently, we discuss theoretical contributions, practical ramifications, and future research possibilities.

For decades, companies and attorneys have instructed teams of engineers, researchers, and computer scientists to ignore patents. The reasoning for this advice: if there is no pre-suit knowledge of a patent, then it is nearly impossible for a patent holder to prove that enhanced damages are warranted. Pre-suit knowledge is a prerequisite for a finding of willful infringement, which is itself a prerequisite for awarding enhanced damages. The median patent damages award is around ten million dollars, and large companies like Intel, Teva Pharmaceuticals, Microsoft, and Abbott Laboratories have all recently faced billion-dollar patent infringement judgments. In this landscape, a multiplier of up to three times the compensatory damages is strong motivation for companies to purposely create a patent-ignorant work environment. Yet this advice defeats an important goal of patent law: the disclosure and dissemination of technological information. How can technology companies learn from new and nonobvious innovation disclosed in patents if their heads are stuck in the sand? In this empirical study with data spanning 2010 to 2020, I provide a data-driven answer to whether this deliberate ignorance strategy is effective. The answer, in short, is that reading patents, conducting patent clearance searches, and/or responding to cease-and-desist letters does not, in isolation, open the door to enhanced damages. Finally, by employing an original data set to seek this answer and potential solutions to deliberate patent ignorance, this study provides empirical statistics regarding willful infringement and enhanced damages. This includes empirical statistics illustrating the impact of the 2016 Supreme Court decision, Halo Electronics v. Pulse Electronics.

Purpose Researchers agree that collaboration networks can be an important implement in a firm’s innovation process, but there is limited empirical evidence on actually how they facilitate the new product development (NPD). The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach Using longitudinal and multisource data on a sample of firms engaged in the Chinese automobile industry, the authors examine the structural properties of collaboration networks and their possible influences on firms’ NPD performance. Findings The results indicate that the structural features of the technology-based collaboration networks in the automobile industry have a low degree of collaborative integration and they influence firms’ NPD performance in diverse ways. The authors find that the direct ties, indirect ties and structural holes of the collaboration networks are all positively associated with firms’ number of new products. However, the authors have not found the evidence that the number of direct ties can moderate the relationship between the indirect ties and the NPD performance. Originality/value First, previous researches concerning the network mainly focused on their influence on technology innovation, few scholars studied the relationship between collaboration network and NPD. Second, the data used in this paper are true and valid, they are all from relevant departments of the Chinese government. Third, the empirical research of new products in China’s manufacturing industry is relatively new.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine what factors affect entrepreneurs with minority background to access public financial institutions’ funds in initiating and developing their new ventures. Following the signal theory, social capital theory and the liability of newness perspective, the effect of demographic characteristics of entrepreneurs were investigated and the differences between ethnic minority and non-minority entrepreneurs’ access to financial institutions’ funds were compared. Design/methodology/approach – This paper draws on the data of 2,119 high technology and non-high technology firms from the Kauffman foundation survey. The empirical analysis was focussed on the characteristics of entrepreneurs of these new ventures and the nature of the financial arrangements of these businesses to test the theoretical framework. Findings – This study provides empirical evidence that ethnic minority entrepreneurs are less likely to access loans from financial institutions than non-minority entrepreneurs. Moreover, the education level of ethnic minority entrepreneurs was identified as a key factor to help them to access financial institutions’ funds. Research limitations/implications – The main limitation is that the data did not allow us to explore the actual reasons for observed correlations between entrepreneurs’ ethnic background, demographic characteristics and their use of financial institutions’ funds. Practical implications – Since the constraints in the access to financial resources greatly impact the success of new ventures, this study indicates through what factors minority entrepreneurs can increase their credence to get more financial support. In addition, it is also helpful for the loan managers of financial institutions to make rational decisions when they assess the application of minority entrepreneurs. Originality/value – This study enriches the understanding of minority entrepreneurs in the entrepreneurship literature. First, it aggregates major minorities in the USA and strives to identify systematically different financing behaviors of these minority entrepreneurs; second, it provides empirical investigation on the correlation of ethnic minority background and access to funds from financial institutions and the moderating effect of a set of demographic factors.
