A total of 373 specimens of Othius Stephens, 1829 was collected during three field trips to West Georgia conducted in June, July/August, and October 2021. The material is represented by eight species. One of them is described and illustrated: Othius egrisicus spec. nov. (Georgia: Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti), a representative of the O. crassus group. The following synonymy is proposed: Othius hebes Assing & Solodovnikov, 1998 = O. fastigatus Assing & Solodovnikov, 1998, syn. nov. Two species are recorded for the first time since their respective original descriptions. The distributions of several species endemic in Northwest Georgia are clarified and mapped. The Georgian Othius fauna is currently represented by 16 described species, eleven of them endemic, and the genus as whole currently includes 136 species and subspecies. Abstract For the first time, the diversity of wild cherry in Caucasia was sampled: 5 populations of Georgia, together with 11 French populations. 23 alleles from 7 isozyme loci were scored, among them 6 new alleles in Georgia. Though the total number of alleles was higher in Georgia (A = 2.4) than in France (A = 2.0), the diversity was higher in France (He = 0.324) than in Georgia (He = 0.284). A higher level of differentiation was found in France (Fst = 0.094) than in Georgia (Fst = 0.057), and the total Fst was even higher (0.108). Mean pairwise distances inside the French group, the Georgian group and between the two groups were 0.054, 0.037 and 0.094, respectively. The Pearson’s correlation coefficient between genetic and geographical distances was 0.58 (p = 0.014) between France and Georgia, which indicated a moderate pattern of isolation by distance. The number of migrants after correction of size was high among the French populations (Nm= 7.6) and even higher among the four nearby Georgian populations (Nm= 32), but it was very low between the pooled French populations and the pooled Georgian populations (Nm= 0.33). Georgia in Caucasia, as an extreme country in the distribution area, can be considered as a source of neutral gene diversity for wild cherry, and thus may also be one for adaptative gene diversity we could use to increase the genetic base of our western country wild cherry breeding populations.

Abstract Introduction: The historical conditions that have developed over the centuries, as well as the migration processes of the 19th and 20th centuries, have determined the multi-ethnic composition of the country’s population. Georgia, as a post-Soviet country, has been transitioning from totalitarianism to democracy for the last few years. The country is in the process of developing into an open, civil society; the modern concept of human-free development, the new principles and values of a civil society and the priorities of public consent placed the problem of ensuring the creation of tolerance in the foreground. Therefore, it is important to define the place and role of national minorities in modern social life. The aim of the article is to determine the problems of non-Georgian general education schools in the educational space of Georgia and develop the necessary recommendations for the solution of these problems. The object of the study is non-Georgian-language public schools in the territory of Georgia, where the teaching and learning processes of the representatives of national minorities is underway. Purpose: The study will discuss the current situation in non-Georgian language general education schools. We will present the recommendations that we think will have a positive impact on the development of non-Georgian language educational institutions in the current education reform. Methods: The article examines the situation in the state regarding the issue of general education of national minorities, international experiences, problems and the means of solving them. Through surveys, in-depth interviews, focus group, data collection, organisation, analysis and synthesis, attention was paid to three problematic issues. These were as follows: 1. low motivation of the students in non-Georgian language schools; 2. low level of knowledge of the state language among the students; 3. textbook availability in non-Georgian language schools of Georgia. Conclusion: A content analysis was used to draw common conclusions. From the in-depth study of the materials, specific recommendations have been made regarding the effectiveness. The policies that were implemented in relation to the national goals of general education in national minorities are less result-oriented and need to be improved.

Since gaining independence in 1991, Georgia has struggled to transform the old-Soviet mental health care structure into a humane system to meet basic human rights standards. The current version of the mental health law was introduced in 2007, which instituted the new practice that required court decisions for involuntary hospitalization and several practical procedures. The Public Defender’s Office (Special reports, 2019-2021) revealed gaps and contradictions within the law that lead to human rights violations and malpractices in involuntary hospitalization. Currently, the group of Georgian experts with international support from Expertise France- French Development Agency, at the request of the Ministry, are working on the new version of the mental health law, which will be in line with international requirements and standards. For the last decades, the Yezidi identity whose main marker was for centuries based on a unique religion, the Sharfadin, has undergone specific transformations. One of the most stable trends playing a crucial role in the mentioned process, is the spread of Orthodox Christianity, particularly among the Yezidis of Georgia and Russia. This phenomenon is especially interesting regarding the fact that, unlike neo-Protestant missions, Orthodox Church has never been active in proselytism particularly among the Yezidis; no Orthodox mission has ever focused its activities on this group. Yet, the number of the Yezidis converting to the Orthodox Christianity gradually grows. The paper is an interim result of a project on the modern transformations of the Yezidi identity. Compiled on the materials collected by the author through interviews and questionnaires among the converted Yezidis of Georgia and Russia, it focuses on several particular cases reflecting the shaping of a principally new identity, when Christian mentality replaces the Yezidi eclectic religious outlook.

Summary A new species of entomopathogenic nematode, Steinernema borjomiense n. sp., was isolated from the body of the host insect, Oryctes nasicornis (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae), in Georgia, in the territory of Borjomi-Kharagauli. Morphological characters indicate that the new species is closely related to species of the feltiae-group. The infective juveniles are characterised by the following morphological characters: body length of 879 (777-989) μm, distance between the head and excretory pore = 72 (62-80) μm, pharynx length = 132 (122-142) μm, tail length = 70 (60-80) μm, ratio a = 26.3 (23.0-29.3), H% = 45 (40-51), D% = 54 (47-59), E% = 102 (95-115), and lateral fields consisting of seven ridges (eight incisures) at mid-body. Steinernema borjomiense n. sp. was molecularly characterised by sequencing three ribosomal regions (the ITS, the D2-D3 expansion domains and the 18S rRNA gene) and the mitochondrial COI gene. Phylogenetic analyses revealed that S. borjomiense n. sp. differs from all other known species of Steinernema and is a member of the monticolum-group.

AbstractIn a survey of entomopathogenic nematodes in Georgia, a nematode isolate of the genus Heterorhabditis was collected from soil by the insect-baiting technique and maintained in the laboratory on last instar Galleria mellonella (L.) larvae. Morphological and molecular studies of the isolate showed that the nematode is a new species. Light and scanning electron microscopy, DNA characterisation and phylogeny were used for this description. Heterorhabditis georgiana n. sp. is morphologically similar to H. bacteriophora and can be distinguished from this species mainly by male and female characters. Sixty percent of males have three pairs of papillae in the terminal group; 40% with three papillae on one side and two papillae on the other. The tail is conoid and slightly curved ventrally. The percentage of the gubernaculum to spicule length (GS%) is similar to that of H. mexicana (56) but higher than that of H. bacteriophora and species in the indica-group and the length of the spicule relative to anal body diam. (SW%) is lower than that of H. baujardi (172 vs 182), H. indica (172 vs 187) and H. bacteriophora (172 vs 174), but higher than that of H. amazonensis (172 vs 152), H. floridensis (172 vs 157) and H. mexicana (172 vs 167). The female can be differentiated from related species by its unique vulva pattern. In phylogenetic trees of ITS and D2D3 regions, the new species and H. bacteriophora form a monophyletic group. The new species has evolved five autapomorphic nucleotide character states based on analysis of ITS, differing from its sister taxon H. bacteriophora at 29 and three aligned positions of ITS and D2D3 regions, respectively.

In this study, we use eight microsatellite loci and a mitochondrial locus to investigate the population structure of the amphidromous goby species Stiphodon rutilaureus in the New Georgia Group, Solomon Islands. In total, 206 specimens were collected between June 2010 and August of 2012 on three different trips. The AMOVA results from both types of loci reveal that >95% of variation is contained within populations. Pairwise comparisons reveal non-significant differences between three different regions for the mitochondrial analysis but a significant difference between the west and central regions for the microsatellites. The findings in this study concur with results from previous studies, indicating low or no population structure among populations of amphidromous sicydiine goby species on different islands within an archipelago. This study can provide suggestions for management and conservation of fragile aquatic species.

School promotes the moral-cognitive development of the individual and creates the democratic competence of society as a whole. Cooperative learning is a technique for teaching democratic processes through direct experiences. One of the main aims of the comprehensive educational reform in Georgia is to contribute to the democratic development of the country and its future for European integration. The National Plan of Public Schools stated new concepts to moderate educational standards. In various countries cooperative learning has become a widely used instructional procedure in all subject areas. There has never been a research of the effectiveness of cooperative learning at schools in Georgia. This research explores the role of cooperative learning for awareness of democratic values such as self-esteem, responsibility and interdependence. 551 eighth grade students from 16 different classrooms participated in the research. The classrooms were selected randomly as the experimental group and the control group. In the experimental group cooperative learning was employed, while in the control group traditional lecture-based teaching. The subjects were chosen randomly, Chemistry and Georgian language. The experiment was completed within a three term period. For conducting survey there were used some instruments for each variable: Rosenberg’s Self-Esteem Questionnaire and Janis-Field Feeling of Inadequacy scale; The Intellectual Achievement Responsibility (IAR) Questionnaire; Relational-Interdependent Self-Construal (RISC) Test; The Scientific Attitude (SAI) Inventory. As an experiment shows, results vary significantly between cooperative learning and traditional group. Results demonstrated that cooperative learning increased students’ performance in both subjects and students scored significantly higher on all variables such as self-esteem, responsibility and interdependence, hence cooperative learning has a positive effect on value teaching. Key words: social interdependence theory, cooperative learning, self-esteem, responsibility.

A new species of Dryinus Latreille, 1804, is described from Georgia (USA). D. georgianussp. nov. is morphologically similar to D. mexicanus (Perkins, 1907) and D. splendidus Guglielmino and Olmi, 2013, but is distinguished by the lateral ocelli not touching the occipital carina (in the other two species, the lateral ocelli touch the occipital carina). The key to the females of the Nearctic species of Dryinus group 1 is modified to include the new taxon.

AbstractIn 1791, in one of the most remarkable documents penned in eighteenth-century Georgia, a group of white women petitioned for the life of a male mulatto slave who had been condemned to death not because of the offence he had committed but because of his reputation as ‘villain’. Although barely a page long, the Sunbury petition provides a fascinating statement of the racial attitudes, political consciousness and modus operandi of elite white women in early national Georgia. The women of Sunbury were articulating their understanding of the role and duties of women in the new republic. If necessary, those duties included correcting the civic behaviour of men.

AbstractWe report the establishment of two representatives of a new ecological functional group on the sub-Antarctic island of South Georgia - pollinating insects - in the form of the hoverfly Eristalis croceimaculata Jacobs (Diptera, Syrphidae) and the blowfly Calliphora vicina Robineau-Desvoidy (Diptera, Calliphoridae). The floricolous adults of these two species provide a new ecological role, pollination, in the ecosystems of this island. The activity of their respectively saprophogous or necrophagous larvae will also augment that of the native insect and microarthropod soil fauna. We discuss the potential new synergy between this functional group and that of a number of established non-native plants, reliant on insect pollinators for successful seed-set and hence dispersal, that are currently of persistent status with very limited local distributions.

The karyotype features and gene COI sequence of Chironomus heteropilicornis Wülker, 1996 from the Gydan Peninsula are presented for the first time. Nine banding sequences were determined, eight of them hpiA2, hpiB1, hpiC1, hpiC2, hpiD1, hpiE1, hpiF3 and hpiG1 were previously known from European, Georgian (South Caucasus) and Siberian populations. One new banding sequence for Ch. heteropilicornis, hpiB2, was found. The hpiA2 banding sequence was found in all individuals, and this is its second finding after the Georgian population (Karmokov 2019). The hpiF3 banding sequence was found only in the homozygous state. Additional B-chromosomes are absent. The genetic distances (K2P) between Ch. heteropilicornis COI gene sequence from Gydan Peninsula and Norway are 1.1–1.3%, and Georgia – 1.8%, much lower than the commonly accepted threshold of 3% for species of genus Chironomus Meigen, 1803. The phylogenetic tree for COI gene sequences estimated by Bayesian inference showed geographically determined clusters of Norway and Gydan and a separate lineage of the Georgian population of Ch. heteropilicornis. The analysis of karyotype and COI gene sequences shows that the population of Ch. heteropilicornis from the Gydan Peninsula has an intermediate position within the Ch. pilicornis group between Georgian, Yakutian and Norwegian populations. The position of Ch. pilicornis Fabricius, 1787 from Canada and Greenland on the phylogenetic tree is discussed.

In quest of its energy policy intertwined with national climate strategy, Georgia has endeavoured to modernize the energy normative framework with the special focus on renewables as the fastest growing source of energy in the country. On the flip side, the European Union, as a ‘regulatory superpower’ urges the third countries to intensify their efforts alongside the EU and expands internal energy law and policy application to non-Member States. In this natural affinity, the EU-Georgia energy and climate partnership comes as no surprise cooperation anchored by the so-called EU’s conditionality policy. This article offers a bird’s eye view of Georgia’s energy sector emphasizing on the emergence of new renewable energy legal regime that is designed in response to the EU course. The article also displays some of the future trends zooming in on a flagship European Green Deal initiative and examines its possible implications for the country. The process of globalization has picked up its pace in the last period and it affects every sphere of societal life. It brings about the new epoch in the human civilization. The history of the establishment and development of the family runs parallel to the history of the development of humankind. Therefore, it is of utmost urgency and importance to study the impact of globalization on the institute of family. The presented work touches upon the immensely urgent issue for modernity - the impact of globalization on the Georgian family. The aim of the article is to delineate those positive and negative changes that occurred within the Georgian family as a result of globalization. This is one of the first attempts to demonstrate the basic characteristics of the modern Georgian family. In order to display the issue clearly, the authors have employed the data of the Georgian statistical service as well as that of the European Union and made a comparative analysis. The researchers have also used the results of the sociological survey conducted with their direct participation during 2013-2015. The main discoveries, which have been obtained by the researchers in this work, are connected with the various types of changes that came to pass in the family. Since the turn of the new century, tolerant attitude toward sexual freedom has been established in Georgia. The beginning of sexual life is no longer associated with the creation of the family. Consequently, the marriage age has increased and the youth are in no hurry to create the family. The postponement of marriage has dialed back the birth of the first child in ages above 30 and, thus, the start of the late parenthood. During 2000-2018, from among the total number of children born by the women of all age group, the share of the children born to only the women within the age group of 30-40 went up from 20.8 % to 33.6 %, i.e. increased 1.6 times. The 1.4 times increase in the fertility rate among the women aged above 40 during the last 18-year period is unprecedented. Religious or legal marriage is no longer necessary to start the family, couples cohabit without it. The increase in the number of cohabiting couples, in its turn, has boosted the number of out-of-wedlock births. It was only two decades ago that such a thing was totally unacceptable in our society. Globalization opened the door wide to international migration. The globalization has brought with it “transnational families”, which were unusual for Georgian society. The man was traditionally considered to be the breadwinner in the Georgian family, however, this did not preclude the woman from working and earning income. It was a given that the woman’s labor was not necessary to retain the living standard of the family. Since the last years of the previous century, because of the fundamental transformations the country was undergoing, the income of the women became not only necessary for the family, but also of life and death importance. The high level of unemployment within the country gave rise to the large number of “transnational mothers”. The Georgian researchers established that the share of the money transfers executed by the Georgian women in emigration is more than half of the total transfers. The instances of family violence are characteristic of Georgian society, like for the majority of societies. It was considered that the facts of domestic violence must not leave the confines of the family. Globalization, additionally, changed the attitude of our society toward this harmful malaise. The victims of violence no longer hide the facts, as a result the exposure of as well as reaction to these instances has increased. Since 2015, the exposure rate of the facts of family violence has grown nearly by 50 %. Superficial attitude of the youth toward marriage has significantly increased the number of divorces. Traditionally, divorce was condemned in Georgia. However, today it is tolerated. In the XXI century, the highest crude divorce rate in Georgia (in 2019 – 3 ‰) lags by only one-tenth behind the highest rate encountered in the EU countries such as: Latvia, Lithuania and Luxembourg (3.1 ‰ divorce per 1000 persons). The mean duration of marriage is 10.6 years in Georgia, and it is shorter than that of Great Britain (11 years), Italy (17 years) and France (13), however, it exceeds that of the USA (8 years).

U.S. roundabout growth has been significant in recent years and many published studies have documented significant safety benefits of roundabouts. However, the safety benefits for a roundabout may vary from region to region depending on many local factors. Therefore, transportation agencies can make more informed implementation decisions with local safety evaluations rather than published national findings. However, roundabouts are relatively new in the United States and most departments of transportation, including Georgia, are often hindered by the data availability requirements of the state-of-the-art empirical Bayes analysis evaluation procedure. This current study provides a safety evaluation of 23 Georgia roundabouts. It adopts a time-dependent form of the Highway Safety Manual predictive (empirical Bayes) method to estimate potential crash reductions across all crashes and all injury/fatal crashes. The method extends the empirical Bayes procedure towards a full Bayesian analysis. The findings indicate a 37–48% reduction in average crash frequency for all crashes and a 51–60% reduction in average crash frequency for injury/fatal crashes at four-leg roundabouts that were converted from stop-controlled and conventional intersections. In addition, when analyzed as a group, three-leg and four-leg roundabouts converted from stop-controlled and conventional intersections collectively experienced 56% reduction in average crash frequency for all crashes and 69% reduction in injury/fatal crashes. The study did not consider five-leg roundabouts because of small sample size and concerns about the form of the safety performance function. The adopted methodology offers departments of transportation with data availability challenges an alternative evaluation framework that retains the positive attributes of empirical Bayes analysis.

The country's central property rests on the institutional and organizational strength of the major price chaos market and the banking sector. Georgian banking system is currently developed not only in the country, but in all regions, the Georgian securities market and the only licensed representative of this market in the country - the Georgian Stock Exchange is undeveloped and unique. The securities market is a kind of economic barometer of the country, a measure of the pulse, which is primarily reflected in the ongoing political, economic and social changes in the country and in the world. The securities market provides fast mobilization of temporarily free cash without bureaucratic intermediaries (in this case banks) and with minimal additional fees compared to bank credit, respectively the banking system and the stock market are competitors. In 1998-2000, with the help of the best government and financial market experts in Georgia, the foundations of the securities market began to form. During this period, everyone was well aware that these two most important financial institutions should be developed together on an equal footing, under conditions of fair competition, and tried not to allow one sphere to be absorbed or oppressed by another. For some reason, the new post-Soviet Georgia had better starting conditions in the banking sector, as enshrined in the 1998 Law on the Securities Market adopted by the Georgian Parliament. By law, the securities industry was separated from the banking sector in order for securities to be newly established mechanisms to enable independent real development opportunities. JSC "Georgian Stock Exchange" (JSC) was established on January 12, 1999 at the initiative of leading brokerage companies, commercial banks, insurance companies and investment funds. Special activity on the Georgian Stock Exchange began in 2004, when after the change of government, the legislation related to privatization was changed and the economic recovery began, corruption was significantly reduced, the financial market was opened, investments were increased. The reduction of trading volume on the Georgian Stock Exchange was caused by the financial crisis of 2008 and a change in the legislation, which resulted in the abolition of the self-regulatory system of the stock exchange and its controlling body became the National Bank of Georgia. Since 2007, the stock exchange has been managed by a group of banks that currently own 58% of the stock exchange shares, of which the Bank of Georgia has the largest package with 46%. As of March 1, 2022, the balance of deposits of legal entities and individuals attracted by commercial banks in national currency is 15.06 billion GEL, weighted by an average of 11.06%, and the volume of deposits of legal entities and individuals attracted in foreign currency - equivalent to 22.03 billion GEL. , On average by 0.81%. (SEB, 2022) In total, 37.1 billion GEL of free cash is deposited in Georgian banks, and if at least a quarter of it returns to the Georgian Stock Exchange, it is easy to imagine the level of economic growth and the size of the national economy. As of May 6, 2022, about 2.31 billion GEL has been accumulated in the pension fund, 60% of the objects are placed on certificates of deposit, 1.3% - on time deposits, 5.8% - on foreign corporate shares (133.98 million 56 l),% - interest Accounts in foreign currency, and 24.69% - on interest accounts (Pension Agency, 2022). In other words, the funds kept by the citizens of Georgia in the pension fund either go to the banking system and only then take part in the short-term activity, ie by buying their securities for about 134 million GEL with the growth of the foreign economy. The development of the Georgian stock market would have facilitated the growing funds of the pension fund, invested more profitably with bank deposits, and the national economy growing faster, with more commission and interest rate pressures than bank credit. As of April 30, 2022, the capitalization of the stock market on the Georgian Stock Exchange amounted to about 2.29 billion GEL, which is only 3.8% of the GDP of Georgia in 2021 (60.2 billion GEL), while this figure has developed stock markets. Countries have more than 100% of GDP. According to the years, the ratio of capitalization of the Georgian stock market to GDP in the same year is declining and was 4.8% in 2020 (due to the pandemic, GDP decreased this year, the capitalization of companies remained largely unchanged), in 2019 - 3.97%; In 2018 - 4.39%; In 2017 - 8.16%. As of May 2, 2022, securities of 23 companies with a total market capitalization of USD 0.748 billion and an average daily turnover of 21 GEL in April 2022 were admitted to the trading system of the CBS. On March 24-30, 2022, we conducted a survey on how people manage their savings through the platform google forms, in which 629 people participated. The results of the survey showed that the culture of accumulation in the population is quite high and they would like to buy securities on the Georgian Stock Exchange. In our opinion, the development of the securities market in Georgia will reduce the employment problem partly through self-employment, the economy will be developed thanks to direct financing of economic entities (and not by scheme = population = bank => enterprises) and increase the speed of cash circulation. The state has a big role to play in the process of establishing a securities market in developing economies. The securities market is a necessary and important element of the global economy, without which the normal functioning of a market economy is impossible. Relevant legislative changes and political will are needed to strengthen the Georgian stock market.

Recent Georgia’s fish fauna includes four Capoeta species: C. capoeta (Kura River basin), C. kaput (Araxes River and its left tributaries, the Akhuryan and Mezamor rivers), C. sieboldii (East and South–East Black Sea river basins), and C. banarescuii (Chorokh River basin). Based on morphological data analysis new species of the genus Capoeta — C. svanetica sp. n. is described. It is more similar to the Capoeta damascina complex group (Anatolian–Iranian group) which also includes C. banarescui, C. baliki, and C. sieboldii spread at East and South-East Black Sea coastal rivers. The Anatolian–Iranian group, also known as small-scales species group well distinguished from Aral-Caspian species (C. capoeta and C. kaput in Georgia) by highest scales number in lateral line. C. svanetica sp. n. is distinguished from other Capoeta species of Black Sea basin rivers in Georgia and adjacent waters by combination of characters: two pairs of barbels are present (C. sieboldii and C. oguzelii have one barbels pair); no spots on the body (C. oguzelii has small black spots); lower lip has keratinised edge without fringe (C. sieboldii and C. oguzelii are characterized by fringed lips); scales small, 70–74 total lateral line scales (in C. sieboldii only 52–60 scales); 10–12 scale rows above lateral line (C. banarescui, C. baliki and C. oguzelii have more than 12 scale rows) and 7–8 scale rows below lateral line (C. baliki and C. oguzelii have more than 10 scale rows); 12–15 gill rakers on the first gill arch (C. sieboldii and C. baliki have more then 16); last unbranched fin ray soft, serrae number on it is 7–9 in adult and 0 in juvenile samples (all other Capoeta species of Black Sea basin rivers have well ossified last unbranched ray with high serrae number); anal fin base length is only 7.4–9.4 % of SL (more shorter than C. banarescui, C. baliki and also C. tinca); as well as mouth width (25.4–29.4 % of HL); eye diameter (19.0–28.7 % of HL) is biggest than same in C. banarescui, C. baliki and also C. tinca.

Objectives: Racial differences in mortality in the United States have narrowed and vary by time and place. The objectives of our study were to (1) examine the gap in life expectancy between white and black persons (hereinafter, racial gap in life expectancy) in 4 states (California, Georgia, Illinois, and New York) and (2) estimate trends in the contribution of major causes of death (CODs) to the racial gap in life expectancy by age group. Methods: We extracted data on the number of deaths and population sizes for 1969-2013 by state, sex, race, age group, and 6 major CODs. We used a Bayesian time-series model to smooth and impute mortality rates and decomposition methods to estimate trends in sex- and age-specific contributions of CODs to the racial gap in life expectancy. Results: The racial gap in life expectancy at birth decreased in all 4 states, especially among men in New York (from 8.8 to 1.1 years) and women in Georgia (from 8.0 to 1.7 years). Although few deaths occurred among persons aged 1-39, racial differences in mortality at these ages (mostly from injuries and infant mortality) contributed to the racial gap in life expectancy, especially among men in California (1.0 year of the 4.3-year difference in 2013) and Illinois (1.9 years of the 6.7-year difference in 2013). Cardiovascular deaths contributed most to the racial gap in life expectancy for adults aged 40-64, but contributions decreased among women aged 40-64, especially in Georgia (from 2.8 to 0.5 years). The contribution of cancer deaths to inequality increased in California and Illinois, whereas New York had the greatest reductions in inequality attributable to cancer deaths (from 0.6 to 0.2 years among men and from 0.2 to 0 years among women). Conclusions: Future research should identify policy innovations and economic changes at the state level to better understand New York’s success, which may help other states emulate its performance.

The validity of the Antarctic species of the “Oikopleura gaussica group” (O. gaussica, O. valdiviae, O. drygalskii, and O. weddelli) is discussed. The characteristics of new material from South Georgia and the Bellingshausen Sea are compared with the original descriptions. We examined 495 specimens at different stages of maturity and concluded that the characters used to differentiate these species of Oikopleura have not enough weight to justify their separation. The morphological variations found were ascribed either to intraspecific variability and/or to the different degree of maturity of the specimens examined of a single species, Oikopleura gaussica. The main taxonomic characters for the identification of this species are: the particular way in which the flat triangular gonads surround the intestinal ball like a sheath, the equal size of the two lobes of the stomach, the oesophagus entering the postero-dorsal edge of the rounded left lobe of the stomach, the presence of oval and some times lobate oral glands, and the variable number of subchordal cells (4 to 14) arranged in a single row on the right (ventral) side of the chorda.

Background: The current cancer patterns in Georgia indicate that a significant proportion of cancer cases and deaths are preventable if appropriate actions are undertaken. The estimates from IARC indicate 12,361 new cancer cases per annum in 2012. The estimated number of deaths from cancer in 2012 was 7319. Objectives: The aim of the project was to: Implement modern cancer registration system in Georgia; Ensure compliance of reporting standards; Create registry that will meet international data standards; Reveal the main national trends of incidence and mortality in Georgia. Methods: In 2011-2014 as a result of active work with Ministry of Health Care (MOH) preliminary actions were taken under the State Program of Modern Cancer Registry Implementation, including: translation and publishing of ICD-O-3; translation of CanReg5 software and training of registrars; translation and filling of dictionaries: topography, morphology, administrative units, and institutions providing oncology services; participation in international training and courses organized by International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). Results: According to the schedule I stage of the program has been completed successfully. New model of cancer registry has been developed The first results of the register are received 8731 new cases of cancer have been diagnosed in Georgia in 2017 (234.8-291.6 per 100,000). Incidence of almost every type of cancer (in all localizations) is less than the incidence in European region and in EU countries. This number is closer to the CIS average data. Almost all localization cancer incidence in both men and women is less compared with the indicators of the European region and EU countries and is closer to the CIS average data. Collectively accounting for > 60% of all new cancers and half of all cancer deaths. Second most common cancer type in registered new cases among females is thyroid cancer. From 2015 there is a gradual increase in newly registered cases of thyroid cancer and its incidence among 100,000 females (2015 - 33.5, 2016 - 42.8, 2017 - 40. In 2017, there was 55 new thyroid cancer cases among females younger than 25 years (in 2015 this number was 41, in 2016 -50); this number corresponds to 50% of all newly registered cancer cases among this age group. By the end of the next year Cancer Registry will be linked to EMR notification system that itself will be linked to public and death registry and data on every cancer patient will automatically appear in the cancer registry database. Conclusion: Developed model of Cancer Registry will serve as a basis for clinical, epidemiologic, and health care services research and for the assessment of their efficacy in Georgia.

A new species—Docosia caucasica sp. n.—has been described from material collected from the Lesser Caucasus Mountains in Georgia (Sakartvelo). The new species belongs to a group of Palaearctic species characterized by distinct posterolateral processes of gonocoxites and apically modified setae at the posteroventral margin of the gonocoxites medially. Within the group, D. caucasica sp. n. is most similar to D. landrocki Laštovka and Ševčík, 2006 in having a similar outline of the medial process of posteroventral margin of the gonocoxites and the gonostylus. There is also a marked difference within the partial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 gene (COI) sequence of D. caucasica sp. n. and other Docosia spp. available in public databases. As the new species is described from a single male specimen only, the adequacy and code compliance of that are discussed.

Twelve, 10-base primers amplified a total of 20 intense and easily scorable polymorphic bands in an interspecific cross of PPF1-5 pawpaw [Asimina triloba (L.) Dunal.] × RET (Asimina reticulata Shuttlew.). In this cross, all bands scored were present in, and inherited from, the A. triloba parent PPF1-5. Nineteen of the 20 bands were found to segregate as expected (1:1 or 3:1) based on chi-square goodness-of-fit tests, and were subsequently used to evaluate genetic diversity in populations of A. triloba collected from six states (Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, New York, and West Virginia) within its natural range. Analysis of genetic diversity of the populations revealed that the mean number of alleles per locus was A = 1.64, percent polymorphic loci was P = 64, and expected heterozygosity was He = 0.25. No significant differences were found among populations for any of the polymorphic indices. Partitioning of the population genetic diversity showed that the average genetic diversity within populations was Hs = 0.26, accounting for 72% of the total genetic diversity. Genetic diversity among populations was Dst = 0.10, accounting for 28% of the total genetic diversity. Nei's genetic identity and distance showed a high mean identity of 0.86 between populations. Genetic relationships among the populations examined by unweighted pair-group mean clustering analysis separated the six populations into two primary clusters: one composed of Georgia, Maryland, and New York, and the other composed of Illinois, Indiana, and West Virginia. The Georgia and Indiana populations were further separated from the other populations within each group. This study provides additional evidence that marginal populations within the natural range of A. triloba should be included in future collection efforts to capture most of the rare and local alleles responsible for this differentiation.

Ten new species of the feather mite genus Trouessartia Canestrini, 1899 (Analgoidea: Trouessartiidae) are described from various passerines of the superfamily Passeroidea in Georgia: Trouessartia americana sp. n. from Setophaga americana (Linnaeus), T. helmitheros sp. n. from Helmitheros vermivorum (Gmelin, JF), T. mniotilta sp. n. from Mniotilta varia (Linnaeus), T. pensylvanica sp. n. from Setophaga pensylvanica (Linnaeus) (type host) and S. palmarum (Gmelin, JF), T. ruticilla sp. n. from S. ruticilla (Linnaeus), T. seiurus sp. n. from Seiurus aurocapilla (Linnaeus), T. tigrina sp. n. from Setophaga tigrina (Gmelin, JF) (Parulidae), T. passerinae sp. n. from Passerina caerulea (Linnaeus) (type host) and P. cyanea (Linnaeus), T. ciris sp. n. from P. ciris (Linnaeus) (Cardinalidae), and T. spizellae sp. n. from Spizella passerina (Bechstein) (Passerellidae). Based on a specific combination of morphological characters, all new species and six previously known species are arranged into a new species group capensis in the genus Trouessartia. The most important diagnostic characters of this species group include: in both sexes, the dorsal hysterosomal apertures are absent; in males, the postgenital plaque is well developed and genital setae g have cylindrical articulation rings; in females, the external copulatory tube is straight, stylet- or finger-like, and situated on the margin of the interlobar membrane, and the head of spermatheca has a semi-ovate extension without indentations. A key to all species referred to the capensis group is provided and host associations of this group with passerines are summarized and briefly discussed. It is hypothesized that this species group originated on the ancestors of New World nine-primaried oscines (Emberizoidea) and diverged in close relation with this group of hosts.

Burn wound treatment issues remain relevant in modern medicine, since burns are among the most common types of injuries and rank third among all types of injury in peacetime. The problem of treatment of burn injuries are determined by the high frequency of their occurrence, the complexity and duration of treatment of such patients, with serious consequences. To date, in the world there are a large number of drugs for local treatment of burns in various forms (ointments, gels, creams, aerosols, solutions for external use, patches) and biological drugs are also used. The aim of the work was to conduct a comparative analysis of the range of registered medicinal products for local treatment of burns on the national market, with preparations of this segment of the market, registered in Georgia and France. Georgia is a country, which is not a member of the European Union, and France is one of the five countries leading exporters of medicines and is a member of the European Union, in order to determine the relevance and feasibility of developing new drugs. In the analysis of drugs registered in the pharmaceutical markets of France and Georgia, those drugs that have no analogues in Ukraine, for the most part are patches (patches), considering in more detail. The study of the nomenclature assortment of drugs carrying out in accordance with the State Register of drugs and the Anatomical-Therapeutic-Chemical Classification, as an information source was used Compendium, online-directories and online-pharmacу. According to the results of the research conducted on the end of 2018, in Ukraine there are about 105 drugs, production in various forms that is directly used for local treatment of burns. In the pharmaceutical markets of Georgia and France, this amount of drugs is respectively 101 and 64 drugs. In all three countries, most medications for local treatment of burns presented in soft drugs, in particular, in Ukraine 67.58%, in Georgia 84.16% and in France 39.06%, respectively. In Ukraine, 58.33% of all drugs for local treatment of burns domestically produced, but in Georgia and France, the proportion of such drugs is significantly lower, namely 11.88% and 32.81% respectively. The comparative analysis conducted by us proved that in the pharmaceutical markets of France and Georgia there were registered drugs in the form of patches that are widely used in the treatment of burn injuries, the analogues of which are absent in Ukraine. These studies prove the prospect of expanding the range of existing ursus forms and creating a new group of original drugs that would stimulate regenerative skin processes and improve wound healing.

African swine fever virus (ASFV), classified as genotype II, was introduced into Georgia in 2007, and from there, it spread quickly and extensively across the Caucasus to Russia, Europe and Asia. The molecular epidemiology and evolution of these isolates are predominantly investigated by means of phylogenetic analysis based on complete genome sequences. Since this is a costly and time-consuming endeavor, short genomic regions containing informative polymorphisms are pursued and utilized instead. In this study, sequences of the central variable region (CVR) located within the B602L gene were determined for 55 ASFV isolates submitted from 526 active African swine fever (ASF) outbreaks occurring in 23 different regions across the Russian Federation (RF) between 2013 and 2017. The new sequences were compared to previously published data available from Genbank, representing isolates from Europe and Asia. The sequences clustered into six distinct groups. Isolates from Estonia clustered into groups 3 and 4, whilst sequences from the RF were divided into the remaining four groups. Two of these groups (5 and 6) exclusively contained isolates from the RF, while group 2 included isolates from Russia as well as Chechnya, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Ukraine. In contrast, group 1 was the largest, containing sequences from the RF, Europe and Asia, and was represented by the sequence from the first isolate in Georgia in 2007. Based on these results, it is recommended that the CVR sequences contain significant informative polymorphisms to be used as a marker for investigating the epidemiology and spread of genotype II ASFVs circulating in the RF, Europe and Asia.

Ovuliferous spikes with two lateral rows of ovules are described from the Callovian of Georgia. The ovules are large, orthotropous, oblique to the stout rachis, with a scar of subtending bract at the base. They show a relatively thin integument and a bulky nucellus topped by a broad nucellar beak. This find constitutes a new genus Baruligyna gen. nov. closely related to the previously described Semionogyna Krassilov et Bugdaeva from the Lower Cretaceous of Transbaikalia. Both are associated with pteridosperm-like foliage. In the case of Baruligyna, the associated leaves are of a Pachypteris morphotype, bipinnate with thick leathery pinnules similar to the ovules in shape and dimensions. This group of Mesozoic plants is considered as transitional between the Permian callipterids and the Mesozoic cycads indicating the origin of Cycas-type ovuliphores ("macrosporophylls") form planated bracteate strobili.

Masona popeye Quicke & Chaul sp. n. is described from Brazil, and differentiated from other species of the genus. Described extant species of Masona are known from Australia and south eastern U.S.A. (Georgia and Florida including the Key Islands). Two undescribed species are known from Tanzania and Cambodia. The new species is therefore the first representative of the subfamily Masoninae van Achterberg from South America, demonstrating the completely cosmopolitan distribution of this very poorly known group. The new species most closely resembles a fossil species, M. pyriceps van Achterberg, 2001, from Dominican amber with which it shares the plesiomorphic presence of a scutellum.

AbstractWe here give Echinocoleus new ranking as a subgenus of Ptomaphagus. Ptomaphagus (Echinocoleus) acutus sp.nov. is described from the southeastern United States (Alabama, Georgia, Florida). It is the most plesiotypic member of a group in which all other species live in the western United States and (probably) adjacent Mexico. All are myrmecophilous with Pogonomyrmex and Aphaenogaster (= Novomessor) harvester ants. A phylogenetic analysis is given for the subgenus. The main synapomorphies of Echinocoleus, which are mostly interrelated with myrmecophily, are reduction of body length and broadening of elytra, reduction of antennal length, verticalization of mesocoxal insertion, reduction of mesosternal carina, body with a golden pubescense, and a pointed projection at the end of the spermatheca.

Five species of Simuliidae are reported for the first time from the Solomon Islands of Santa Isabel, Malaita, and Makira, and Kolumbangara and Rendova of the New Georgia Island group. One newspecies, Simulium (Gomphostilbia) rhopaloides Craig, Englund & Takaoka, from Guadalcanal is described. The new material consists mainly of immature larvae, which, while allowing assignment to subgenus, do not always allow identification to species. The probability of other new species is suggested. The record for Makira is the most easterly known for the subgenus Morops, as are those for Gomphostilbia from Guadalcanal and Malaita. Larval habitats on the islands are illustrated. A brief synopsis of the paleogeology of the Solomon Islands is given as a basis for preliminary comments on distribution and biogeography of the known species of Simuliidae, now 10, for the Solomon Islands.

The Redeye Bass, Micropterus coosae, was described from the Mobile River basin, Chattahoochee, and Savannah rivers in Alabama and Georgia, USA, by Hubbs and Bailey (1940). At that time the authors recognized significant variation in the Black Warrior River population, and noted that with further study this form may be recognized as a separate taxon. An examination of variation in morphology and mitochondrial DNA supported this observation, and highlighted additional species-level variation, resulting in descriptions of a total of four new species: Micropterus cahabae, new sp., restricted to the Cahaba River system; Micropterus tallapoosae, new sp., restricted to the Tallapoosa River system; Micropterus warriorensis, new sp., from the Black Warrior River system; and Micropterus chattahoochae, new sp., from the Chattahoochee River system. Micropterus coosae is restricted to the Coosa River system. The new species differ from each other and from M. coosae by a combination of pigmentation and scale count characteristics, development of the tooth patch, and divergence within the ND2 gene. While two of these species are relatively common in upland streams within their ranges, M. warriorensis, M. cahabae and M. chattahoochae are uncommon and may warrant protection.
