Abstract This article revisits Leslie Feinberg's pioneering Stone Butch Blues alongside hir lesser known second novel, Drag King Dreams. Through a prism of well-established queer theory and emerging trans scholarship, the author seeks to demonstrate how Feinberg's political vision retained its Marxist core while adapting with the times to confront new challenges presented by neoliberism, bio/necropolitics, and imperialist warfare. Living from the mid-twentieth century to the dawn of the twenty-first, Feinberg's life spanned from an era of industrial capitalism to the apotheosis of neoliberalism. Witnessing everything from pre-Stonewall queer culture to Gay Liberation and, eventually, homonormativity, Feinberg's political commitments remained remarkably consistent. Hir life and work were anchored by a critical class consciousnesses that, in a queer vein, destabilized identity in the formation of coalitional political work and, through a transgender/Marxist line of thought, rejected binary modes of gender altogether as coercive mechanisms of capitalism. Feinberg's project is thus at once historical, yet ever contemporary, and merits renewed attention and commitment in the twenty-first century.

Based in the dialectical method and bibliographic analysis, the neoliberalism imposes on dependent countries the fiscal austerity, the commodification of social rights; and precarious labour relationships. After decades of the imposition of Pinochet's constitution, Chile, has gone through popular uprinsig, the “social outburst”, which leads the country to a new constitutional plebiscite. Meanwhile in Brazil, the government is applying a severe counter-reform agenda, which get worse in the pandemic, that results a policy of extermination of the working population. There is an exhaustion of neoliberal policies and the historical need to overcome a system that prioritizes profit over human life. Keywords: Neoliberalism. Compared social policy. Labor.

Populism is present in the current political scenario in a modern way associated with neoliberalism. The objective of this work is to associate the subjective impacts produced by neoliberal policies on the individual, mainly the feeling of competition and the vision of work as a source of profit and, no longer of exchange, with the rise of right-wing populism in the last decade as a response to the crises of the capitalist system itself, largely due to the inefficiency of the political left in offering strong answers. The methodology chosen is based on the critical association of texts by Foucault, Dardor, Laval and Ruzza, in which a dialogue between subjective aspects of the individual and the macro structure of current politics will be promoted.

While the by now popular term "posttruth" remains, as Jayson Harsin and others argue, a contested and problematic concept, as a periodizing term it is useful in that it encapsulates collective anxieties and cognitive effects brought on by the increased commodification of knowledge, the marketization of political discourse, and the emergence of new economies and technologies of attention that fragment and destabilize relations of trust and authority across fields of inquiry (e.g. science and medicine), knowledge institutions (e.g. news and universities), and media technologies (e.g. video and photography) traditionally seen as arbiters of truth and facticity within the hegemony of Anglo-American liberalism. This paper considers the role of neoliberalism in the emergence of posttruth performance by reflecting on the work of public relations companies deployed in 2017 to promote the construction of a new power plant in New Orleans, as well as the work of the pro-Brexit campaign group Leave.EU in the run up to the 2016 referendum. Through these case studies the article demonstrates ways in which theater and performance studies can offer important critical tools with which to understand and dissect the structural conditions of posttruth in the twenty-first century.

In a recent contribution Hendrikse (2018) has coined the concept of neo-illiberalism to signify mainstreaming of illiberal doctrines among neoliberal elites, thereby signifying a ‘mutation and restoration of transatlantic neoliberalism’. After a critical appraisal of his concept, this contribution argues that it is too early to claim that neoliberalism is mutated and suggests that the present conjuncture can better be termed ill-neoliberal instead. Following numerous scholars who have argued that we have arrived at an interregnum, I argue, also by applying Gramscian framework, that neoliberalism is increasingly malfunctioning, ‘ill’ or even dying, while something new is yet to be born. Yet in contrast to those who apply a Gramscian approach, I do not regard the rise of Trump or the European far right as ‘morbid symptoms’, but as attempted remedies (or authoritarian restorations) for neoliberalism. Neoliberal elites, somewhat reluctantly, welcome illiberal actors and doctrines in an effort to keep existing hierarchies in place or even restore old ones, now by even more authoritarian means. This transformation in the transatlantic neoliberal heartlands towards more illiberal regimes differs, then, from the emerging (and already) illiberal or authoritarian world powers such as China. If we were to accept the validity of the term ‘neo-illiberalism’ this should be exclusively applied to those regimes that are consistently illiberal, but increasingly rely on an ever-growing private economy (cf. Aiyar. 2016). Yet, whether such powers will be able to install a new (global) order depends foremost on the ability of the transatlantic heartlands to overcome neoliberalism. The article therefore concludes by pointing at some outlooks for the renewal and further contestation of an increasingly malfunctioning neoliberalism.

Lebanon, a multi-confessional state, is undergoing a deep socioeconomic change that could trigger a review of its constitutional arrangement. The tiny republic on the Mediterranean was born in 1920 as a liberal democracy with a market economy, where the Christians had the upper hand in politics and the economy. In 1975, Lebanon witnessed a major war that lasted for fifteen years, and a new political system emerged in 1989, dubbed the Ta’ef Accord. The new constitutional arrangement, also known as the “second republic,” transferred major powers to the Muslims. Under the new republic, illiberal policies were adopted in reconstruction, public finance, and monetary policy, coupled with unprecedented corruption at the highest levels. On 17 October 2019, the country exploded in a social revolution which could precipitate the death of the second republic or the demise of the country as another victim of predator neoliberalism.

This article examines the curious non-death of neoliberalism in Japan. After initial predictions about the end of neoliberalism in the wake of the 2008 global financial crisis, more recent analysis, focusing primarily on the United States and Western European cases, have turned their attention to explaining the “resilience” or “non-death” of neoliberalism. I seek to contribute to this analysis by examining the case of Japan, a country that has faced three major financial crises since it began to embrace neoliberal policies and practices in the 1980s. I demonstrate that the Japanese state has scaled back its role in many of the functionally equivalent forms of welfare that were associated with the developmental state model that Japan adopted in the early decades of the post-war era. Moreover, despite these cutbacks, and in contrast to the predictions made by many observers of Japanese politics, I further show that there has not been a corresponding rise in more formal and universalistic forms of welfare for the working age population that would help mitigate the rise in the level of social stratification and risk in Japan caused by these cutbacks. Instead, I show that many formal welfare benefits have been cut back even as spending has risen, and the various tax and labour reform policies that have been adopted since the 1980s have further eroded the level of social equality and income security in Japan.

This article examines the concept of neoliberalism and how it can be operationalized and measured cross-nationally. Theoretically I argue that much previous work has either been insufficiently critical of neoliberalism, oversimplified it, or conflated it with other apolitical social trends like globalization. Empirically I show that past research has captured certain parts of neoliberalism without capturing the phenomenon fully. Future research should focus on economic liberalism, industrial restructuring, employment precariousness, foreign dependence, free trade regimes, and social service privatization. It should also should expand on available data with greater coverage of cases and more precise indicators of neoliberalism along all of its dimensions.

What is neoliberalism? This essay tries to answer this question by drawing upontwo sources: theoretical discussions and literary representations. Michel Foucaultand Wendy Brown argue that neoliberalism is best understood as a new logic ofgovernmentality which has brought into being a new economic subject, homoœconomicus. This article, positioning itself against the main tenets of Foucauldiantheories of neoliberalism, argues that a normative logic of governmentality is aninadequate frame for understanding neoliberal capitalism. In order to understandthe contemporary moment better, we need to historicize neoliberalism and lookcarefully into its relationship with capitalism and class. What we also need tofactor in is how a monetized consumerist worldview has normalized itself inneoliberal culture. When we read contemporary South Asian fictions allegorically, these normalized worldviews and masked relationships begin to come into view.Allegorical presentations of neoliberalism in fictions, this essay hypothesizes, have often taken two different paths: representation of it as a structure of feeling, and parody and critique. A number of contemporary fictions including SamratUpadhyay’s “The Good Shopkeeper” and Amitav Ghosh’s the Ibis trilogy can beread as neoliberal allegories thematizing not only the material alterations thatneoliberalism has ushered in but also the cultural transformations that havebecome parts of our everyday life.

Neoliberalism, as a recent capitalism, advances the wellbeing of dominant groups, it corporates elites and the developed economies, particularly of the West, and it has negative implications for the downtrodden classes and third-world countries. Drawing upon the critique of neoliberalism by the recent left-wing writers, this study explores the novel Home Boy’s critique of resistance to the economic issues of neoliberalism. The study makes use of qualitative research, interpretivist paradigm and descriptive-analytical method to explore the novel’s resistance to and critique of neoliberalism. The findings show that Boy portrays precarious condition of the downtrodden and working classes, absence of social protection, job insecurity, global disparity and spatial differentiation under the dominant ideology of neoliberalism. The novel reveals that neoliberal practices grind down the downtrodden, migrant workers and peripheral societies at global level; consequently, neoliberalism engenders resistance and hostility among them. The study is useful in exploring the critique of neoliberalism in literary works, including Anglophone Pakistani writings. Keywords: Neoliberalism, Resistance, corporate interests, privatization, insecurity, lack of social protection, downsizing, inequality and spatial differentiation.

Michel Foucault's genealogy of neoliberalism in Naissance de la biopolitique is surprisingly lacking in critical acumen vis-à-vis neoliberal rationality. Several interpretations explain Foucault's appreciative tone by hypothesising about Foucault's supposed conversion to neoliberalism. In this article, I argue that the problem lies not in Foucault's personal politics but in a disappointing application of the genealogical method. Compared to previous works, Foucault's lectures on neoliberalism focus exclusively on neoliberalism's self-presentation by the likes of Hayek, Becker, and Friedman. It does not explore the subjective effects of neoliberalism on the governed, which would have been impossible for Foucault in 1979. I argue that, by taking into consideration the negative effects of actually-existing neoliberalism, one reveals an immanent critique of neoliberalism at the heart of genealogy. Neoliberalism promises a post-disciplinary order conducive to subjective freedom, but actually requires subjects to adapt to the discipline of free market competition.

Precarious work is a form of work that is widespread today with the influence of neoliberal policies. This form of work includes the lack of job security and some social rights, as well as the fear of dismissal an ongoing job, even if the employee has a job. In recent years, precarious work has begun to be seen in the field of social work as well as being seen in every area with the contraction of the role of the public in working life. The purpose of this research is to evaluate the insecurity that has become widespread in the field of social work in recent years, in the eyes of the social workers, working in this field. For this purpose, in-depth interviews were conducted with 14 social workers who were working without precautions.Interviews were subject to content analysis by the authors and gathered under three subtopics. As a result of the research, it has been seen that precarious social workers feel themselves in an ambiguity on the individual level and on the social level they are away from working for the benefit of the client. The effects of precarious work are not only effect on an individual level, but Precarious work has also affected the social dimension, and it has preventing services for individuals. It is necessary to investigate more precisely the effects of precarious work on employees and clients, and to prevent the loss of rights in social services.

Why do people desire their own continued oppression under neoliberalism? This essay seeks an answer to this confounding question through analysis of the Amway organization, an American multi-level-marketing (MLM) company that rose to a multi-billion dollar value in the 1980s and 90s. My argument is that Amway serves as a prime case study for the relation between neoliberalism and religious practices––people desire their continued oppression under neoliberalism in part because neoliberalism bears meaning at the level of culture and religion. What sets Amway apart from other MLMs, and makes Amway a prime case study for neoliberalism and religious practices, is its amalgamation of neoliberal ideology with ideas and trends from American evangelicalism, to the extent that it serves as a kind of neoliberal religious tradition. As this amalgamation demonstrates, people may defend neoliberalism with a similar fervor as defending cultural or religious traditions. The conclusion explores the possibility of a decolonial American evangelicalism, which would seek options for broadening the horizons of American evangelicalism beyond the relationship to neoliberalism and the possibility of a critical theology robust enough to thoughtfully critique neoliberalism. In pursuit of this thesis, the essay utilizes a theoretical framework guided by the contributions of scholars including Wendy Brown, Walter Benjamin, Olivier Roy, Walter Mignolo, and Carl Raschke in order to analyze Amway through the lens of contemporary political theories of neoliberalism.

Neoclassical economics has been thought to be in some way separated from actually existing capitalism. This is true, as well, for neoliberalism, the current policy framework based on neoclassical economics. Some perspectives argue that neoliberalism is a global colonizer implanted in, and taking over, actually existing capitalism through institutions or imaginations. I argue instead that neoliberalism is spectacle (“the birth-to-presence of a form of being that pre-exists”) requiring continual expert intervention to bring to fruition. I first lay out some recent notions of neoliberalism as colonizer through institutions and imaginations. I argue that these approaches break down as the focus moves away from academic departments and research and high-level policy departments of international financial institutions (IFIs), to the practice of development, especially corporate exploitation. “Neoliberalism as spectacle” more effectively accounts for corporate strategies that are often at cross purposes with neoliberal representations, for example privileging instability and barely controlled violence as strategy. Second, neoliberalism as spectacle brings appropriate focus onto what Latour terms the “small networks” masked by “big explanations.” Third, neoliberalism as spectacle re-focuses attention on the backstage maneuvers that accompany neoliberal onstage representations. If neoliberalism is a spectacle, then transformation must concentrate not only on challenging neoliberal policies and rationales, but also the myriad other ways, distinct from neoliberalism, that exploitation is accomplished (perceptions, coercive and non-coercive compulsion, legal/lobbying, strategic organizational changes, etc.).

The education concept of neoliberalism is the conceptual product of neoliberalism in the field of education. Since 1970s, under the influence of the worldwide popularity of the education concept of neoliberalism, music education has gradually shown a tendency of “deaestheticization” and “utilitarianism”.This paper, re-interprets the value of music education through the critical reflection on the education concept of neoliberalism, hoping that people will acquire a clearer understanding.

Accounts of neoliberalism have noted, but not fully explored, the neoliberal empowerment of corporations. The corporate power literature, similarly, rarely makes the connection between corporate agents and neoliberalism as a power structure. This article fills the gap between these literatures with a dual contribution. It develops these contributions by first reviewing the neoliberalism literature and in so doing, developing the idea of neoliberalism as a bricolage of practice and ideas. It then discusses the mischaracterization of the corporation within neoliberalism before deconstructing four core policy areas of neoliberalism – deregulation, non-intervention, free markets and free trade. In each policy area it is shown how the practice of these policies has enhanced the social and economic power of major corporations – thereby deepening practice-based accounts of neoliberalism – and how the discourse of these policies has empowered corporations in the political arena – thereby deepening the corporate power literature’s account of how corporations operate powerfully. More generally this article offers a much fuller account of how 40 years of ‘free market’ policies have resulted in the creation of oligopolistic corporate economies.

Proposing a non-moralistic critique of the changes to neoliberal capitalism post-crisis, Konings provides a refreshing take on the dynamics of financial governance, emphasizing the way linkages between state and finance are structured by a speculative logic internal to neoliberalism. In this essay, I raise a number of questions about this characterization of neoliberalism, focusing on issues of agency and durability. First, does the turn to systems theory allow for a satisfactory account of the role that agency has played in the historical expansion of neoliberalism? And second, is it possible to envisage an end to neoliberalism when neoliberalism is so closely identified with capital dynamics in general?
