Анотація:

This chapter discusses a number of practical evaluation tools used by qualitative research journals. First, the chapter discusses the American Educational Research Association’s “Standards for Reporting on Empirical Social Science Research,” which emphasizes warrantability and transparency. Second, many ideas on reviewing qualitative research are briefly presented. Third, current qualitative research journals that use and those that do not use specific evaluation tools are discussed. The reasons why some journal editors do not use such specific evaluation tools are identified: trust, freedom, the nature of qualitative research, and “it works.” Other journals that use specific review guides are analyzed. This chapter suggests a holistic way of understanding the evaluation of qualitative research by taking three elements (core values, research processes, and key dimensions) into consideration. The seven most commonly used evaluation criteria are discussed: importance to the field, qualities, writing, data analysis, theoretical framework, participant, and impact/readership.

The rise of mass education has led to mass research—quantity dominates quality. A ruthless institutional competition for status, plus academics pushing to get published in the ‘right’, career-enhancing journals, has led to the fetishization of journal outputs even when they are of little meaning or value to society. This situation is now endemic within the system of academic research and publication, and is strongly driven and sustained by academics themselves, even when they are unwilling to admit it. Academics, both individually and collectively, exercise considerable control over the content and nature of social science research, its scrutiny, assessment, and dissemination. They also have considerable control over the practices of various scientific institutions, including universities and their departments, funding bodies, conferences, and publications. Social science researchers underestimate and diminish their own responsibility for this state of affairs and sometimes prematurely adopt a victim position, blaming an impersonal system.

The program starts on Sunday (August 8th) with two panel discussion sessions, one on “Energy, Environment and Economy” and the other one on “Energy and Education” where current challenges, potential solutions, opportunities and future directions are discussed by the leading experts. The program opens its technical sessions on Monday with the formal opening talks where the TUBA President, Minister of Industry and Technology, and Minister of Energy and Natural Resources deliver their speeches. The program continues with 29 plenary/ keynote speakers, 27 invited speakers and over 121 general speakers on four days which make an exceptionally designed conference in the area of energy science and technology. It then ends on Thursday (August 12th) with a panel discussion session and closing remarks. Furthermore, there are general sessions where many research talks are delivered by researchers, scientists, engineers, and technologists to disseminate high-quality research results and present new findings. Local and global online participations are expected from academia, government agencies, and industry to bring all players together, and the conference is then expected to lead to effective and fruitful discussions and collaborations among these attendants from different disciplines, institutes, and sectors from all over the world. Moreover, it is planned to have some special issues in various reputable international journals to publish high-quality papers out of the conference.

In many ways, everything we once knew about energy resources and technologies has been impacted by: the longstanding scientific consensus on climate change and related support for renewable energy; the affordability of extraction of unconventional fuels; increasing demand for energy resources by middle- and low-income nations; new regional and global stakeholders; fossil fuel discoveries and emerging renewable technologies; awareness of (trans)local politics; and rising interest in corporate social responsibility (CSR) and the need for energy justice. Research on these and related topics now appears frequently in social science academic journals in broad-based journals, such as International Organization, International Studies Quarterly, and Review of International Political Economy, as well as those focused specifically on energy (e.g., Energy Research & Social Science and Energy Policy), the environment (Global Environmental Politics), natural resources (Resources Policy), and extractive industries (Extractive Industries and Society). The Oxford Handbook of Energy Politics synthesizes and aggregates this substantively diverse literature to provide insights into, and a foundation for teaching and research on, critical energy issues primarily in the areas of international relations and comparative politics. Its primary goals are to further develop the energy politics scholarship and community, and generate sophisticated new work that will benefit a variety of scholars working on energy issues.

This chapter integrates ethnographic techniques, cognitive science, and enactive theory to examine the phenomenology dynamics that emerge during spontaneous interaction in a newly developed practice called banding. Specifically, participants are connected to each other via large rubber bands. An enactivist analysis of participants’ journals reveals participants undergo intense intercorporeal experiences with properties that are: disorienting; multiscale; conjure intercorporeal surprise and discovery; undergo patterns of change, in both groups and individuals; give rise to intercorporeal trust; and entail intercorporeal shifts in identity. The paper analyses how these properties might reflect the intercorporeal nature of everyday experiences.

The chapter appraises science as an intellectual activity that is appropriately carried out on its own terms. Consequently, it is not appropriate to introduce references to God as a component part of a mathematical proof, nor of a system of forces in the natural world, nor of a sequence of impersonal processes in the biosphere. This does not mean that it is inappropriate to be thankful to God and to celebrate all these aspects of the world as gifts. They can be employed as opportunities to express appreciation through studying and understanding them better in their own right. Nevertheless, there may be processes, such as those which shape a person’s self-identity, in which it is appropriate to recognize God’s more direct role. Good practice concerning acknowledgements sections in scientific publications such as doctoral theses and journal articles is then discussed.
