Анотація:

In 1871 the Scottish-born magistrate John Hosack (1809–87) was described as ‘the chivalrous and most recent defender’ of Mary, Queen of Scots. After writing a popular historical account of her life, he had presented a plaster cast bust of her Westminster effigy to London’s National Portrait Gallery, which it then used to create an electrotype sculpture with the help of Elkington & Co. This article interrogates the ‘value’ of this sculpture as a cultural heritage object by retracing its history. It places Hosack’s desire to replicate and commemorate Scottish heritage alongside his family ties to Jamaica, including the parallel life of his half-brother William and the wealth John derived from his father’s sugar profits, which relied on African enslavement. It argues the importance of understanding how such legacies enabled individuals to participate in cultural philanthropy in the Victorian period, which simultaneously distanced them from their Atlantic pasts. It also considers how, in its transformation into an electrotype, Hosack’s cast became part of a wider effort by museums and galleries to replicate national heritage using manufacturing methods indebted to the industrial economy intertwined with the British Empire. Sculpture offered a powerful medium through which to fortify national history, but its commemorative capacity can, and should, be unpicked to better understand British legacies of enslavement and colonialism.

Case overview This teaching case outlines the historical background, successes and challenges of the national airline of Jamaica. It shows how a national airline, which is a heritage asset and one that has provided nostalgic and sentimental value to the Jamaican people and its passengers, had to be divested. The airline has been faced with several challenges; the major one being high-operating costs, especially in light of the global economic recession. The case also highlights the various procedures carried out by the Government of Jamaica before and after the divestment arrangement and also by the acquirer, Caribbean Airlines. Expected learning outcomes The student should be able to: first, differentiate among the various strategic management terms and concepts used in the case; second, explain the importance of strategic decisions versus emotional decisions; third, assess the environmental factors that impacted Air Jamaica's operation; fourth, analyse the environmental factors that should have been considered by Caribbean Airlines before making the decision to acquire Air Jamaica; fifth, carry out a comparative analysis of the various corporate-level strategies to identify the best option for the Government of Jamaica; sixth, propose reasons why Caribbean Airlines acquired Air Jamaica. The National Gallery hosts several local and foreign travelers for art exhibitions and events. It is intriguing to look at the lifestyle characteristics, gallery art collections, and hedonic factors that affect tourists' decisions to visit the National Gallery. The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of Lifestyle, Art Collection, and Hedonic Living on Visit Intention, Visit Decision, and Revisit Intention in the National Gallery. Purposive sampling was used to collect data on 152 National Gallery visitors in December 2022 for this study. The analytical method employed is the Structural Equation Model, which is supported by SmartPLS software. The results demonstrate that the Hedonic influences the Visit Intention, Visit Decision, and Revisit Intention. Contrarily, the Visit Intention, Visit Decision, and Revisit Intention are unaffected by Lifestyle. The Art Collection affects Visit Intention and Revisit Intention but has no impact on Visit Decision. Finally, the Visit Decision is influenced by the Visit Intention, which in turn is influenced by the Revisit Intention. This is a curatorial essay in which the author explains his research and process for the conception and production of everything slackens in a wreck, a visual arts exhibition running at the Ford Foundation Gallery in New York from June to September 2022. Gosine elaborates his thinking about the title of the exhibition, which is taken from a Khal Torabully poem, and explains the relevance of and his intrigue with the four artists whose works comprise the exhibition: Wendy Nanan (Trinidad and Tobago), Margaret Chen (Jamaica/Canada), Andrea Chung (Jamaica/United States), and Kelly Sinnapah Mary (Guadeloupe). Each of the four women is a descendant of indentured workers who traveled to the Caribbean in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and for each this history is a reference point in her practice. Gosine proposes a consideration of the Americas as a consequence of three wreckages: the ship landings of European colonizers and the arriving ships of enslaved and, later, indentured peoples.

AbstractIps calligraphus (Germar) has previously been recorded from Jamaica but this is the first record of Ips grandicollis (Eichhoff) in the island. In Jamaica, both bark beetles attack 5 species of Pinus, 4 of which had not been previously recorded. The beetles thrive mainly on freshly cut logs and weakened trees, but recently they have been rising to economic importance in plantations. Successful attack on live trees is enhanced by mass aggregation of dispersing adults during invasion. Some adults may re-emerge after a phase of oviposition and disperse to new food sources. There is degeneration of flight muscles during oviposition, and regeneration to allow for another dispersive flight. In I. calligraphus attacking Pinus caribaea there was a mean of 26.74 ± 6.86 (mean ± SE) eggs per gallery, while in I. grandicollis there was 19.29 ± 3.04. The proportion of females at emergence was 0.57 ± 0.03 and 0.05 ± 0.02 in I. calligraphus and I. grandicollis, respectively.

Prostate cancer is highly prevalent in Jamaica and is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths. Our aim was to evaluate the patterns of screening in the largest organized screening clinic in Jamaica at the Jamaica Cancer Society. A retrospective analysis of all men presenting for screening at the Jamaica Cancer Society from 1995 to 2005 was done. All patients had digital rectal examinations (DRE) and prostate specific antigen (PSA) tests done. Results of prostate biopsies were noted. 1117 men of mean age 59.9 ± 8.2 years presented for screening. The median documented PSA was 1.6 ng/mL (maximum of 5170 ng/mL). Most patients presented for only 1 screen. There was a gradual reduction in the mean age of presentation for screening over the period. Prostate biopsies were requested on 11% of screening visits; however, only 59% of these were done. 5.6% of all persons screened were found to have cancer. Of the cancers diagnosed, Gleason 6 adenocarcinoma was the commonest grade and median PSA was 8.9 ng/mL (range 1.5–1059 ng/mL). Older men tend to screen for prostate cancer in Jamaica. However, compliance with regular maintenance visits and requests for confirmatory biopsies are poor. Screening needs intervention in the Jamaican population.

The Library of the National Gallery of Zimbabwe dates from the 1950s. Its acquisition policies mirror those of the Gallery itself, which since Independence in 1980 have concentrated on traditional culture and contemporary art in Zimbabwe; the library also includes a collection of books on architecture. Due to insufficient funds and lack of foreign currency, Library acquisitions are heavily dependent on donations. A slide collection includes specially photographed slides of Zimbabwean art. The Library is open to the public and is well used by students but not by local artists who are often content to continue traditions without seeking to innovate or to respond to other works of art. Both Gallery and Library have accepted and are developing an active educational role.

While Asian and European countries were grappling with the Covid-19 pandemic, the first imported case from the United Kingdom surfaced in Jamaica on 10 March 2020. The article will trace the steps taken by the National Library of Jamaica (NLJ) before and during the pandemic while improving the value of our cultural heritage to Jamaica and the wider diaspora. The NLJ celebrated 40 years of sterling contribution to the development of Jamaica from March 1979 to April 2020. It has been a leading voice in the region in disaster management and preparedness. Through its Preservation and Conservation Branch, and oversight from the Disaster Preparedness Committee, the NLJ has become a training ground for professionals in the information and conservation field. While highlighting the work of the NLJ, the article will also present statements and surveys conducted on regional and international bodies. These organisations include the Association of Caribbean University, Research and Institutional Libraries (ACURIL), the Community of Directors of National Libraries (a subgroup of the International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA) and the Society of American Archivists. The surveys conducted gleaned a greater appreciation of the impact of Covid-19 on libraries and archives regionally and internationally. The article will address other pandemic crises that have affected Jamaica. It will also demonstrate that being proactive and prepared for viral episodes can mitigate the risks. The NLJ used the opportunity to facilitate service delivery while being socially distant from its patrons.

In December 1973 the Prime Minster of Jamaica appointed a National Council on Libraries, Archives and Document Services (NACOLADS) to advise the government on the development of an integrated network information system. It was thought that this could best be done by using UNESCO's NATIS concept. Several working parties were established, and among their recommendations were the creation of a series of networks as the basis of a national information system, the establishment of a National Library (achieved in 1979), new legislation for the National Archives and Records Center (passed in 1982), and copyright legislation, with provision for legal deposit. NACOLADS incorporated all the recommendations into a national information plan, published in 1978. A revised edition in 1986 included recommendations for redressing a number of shortcomings (e.g. the need for improved salaries and conditions of service). In 1990 NACOLADS was renamed NACOLAIS (National Council on Libraries, Archives and Information Systems), and given additional responsibility for the expansion of NATIS in Jamaica. A copyright law was eventually passed in 1993, but laws for a national information policy and legal deposit remain to be enacted. The financial situation of cultural institutions is becoming increasingly perilous, and two years into its new national mandate the Library of the National Gallery of Canada finds its resources absorbed by internal needs and local use. To sustain a vital presence in the community of art information specialists the Library must restrict its contributions to those which have modest or no resource imperatives: generously shared collections; well conceived services which are publicized and accessible; strengthened cataloguing to be shared; attention to preservation; development of expertise to be shared with colleagues and students; initiation and promotion of collaborative projects. As a federal body the National Gallery of Canada is excluded from funding sources available to others, but will support the projects of others. A national task force is needed to outline and develop a Canadian strategic plan for art libraries.

This study aims to determine the effect of attractiveness on tourist interest in the National Gallery of Indonesia. The object of this research is people who are visiting the National Gallery of Indonesia. The research sample amounted to 100 people used by purposive sampling method. All data were processed using the SPSS (Statistical Program for Social Science) version 25.This research uses quantitative methods. In this study the results showed that the t value of the variable count Attraction (X1) amounted to 3.454 t table (1.984) with a value of Sig. 0.001 0.05 then H0 is rejected and HA is accepted so that it can be concluded that Attraction (X1) has a positive influence on Interest in Visiting at the National Gallery of Indonesia.The t value of the Amenity variable (X2) is -0.46 t table (1.984) with a Sig value. 0.963 0.05, then H0 is accepted and HA is rejected so it can be concluded that the Attractiveness of Amenities (X2) has no effect on Interest in Visiting at the National Gallery of Indonesia. t value of the Accessibility variable (X3) is 2.108 t table (1.984) with a Sig value. 0.038 0.05 then H0 is rejected and HA is accepted so it can be concluded that Accessibility Attraction (X3) has a positive influence on Interest in Visiting at the National Gallery of Indonesia.

The National Gallery of Ireland is the country's premier art institution. It houses the nation's collection of fine art in addition to a collection of library and archive material relating to the visual arts. The library and archive collections play an invaluable role supporting the work of the gallery and are regularly consulted by external researchers. Surprisingly, for more than a century there was no dedicated library space allocated to this collection. This article explores the development of the collection and the space it has occupied within the Gallery over the last 150 years, chronicling the challenges the gallery has faced housing this growing collection. This article outlines the situation today and concludes with an outline of the gallery's future plans for the library and archive in its efforts to create a space that will be a fitting home for this remarkable collection.

Although there is a lot of research on websites, there is very little research on art gallery websites in Indonesia. As a result, this study examines the quality of the National Gallery of Indonesia’s (commonly referred to as Galnas) website as a source providing information about the gallery by analyzing end-user perceptions through methods such as WebQual 4.0, importance–performance analysis, and customer satisfaction index (CSI). Fifty undergraduate and postgraduate college students in the Library and Information Science (LIS) program of the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Indonesia were selected as respondents based on convenience sampling. The study found that compared to other sources of information, the Galnas website was chosen the least, but the overall services of the website met user expectations, as evidenced by a CSI score of 83.88% for undergraduate college students and a CSI score of 74.96% for postgraduate college students. This research contributes to the enhancement of the quality and accessibility of the Galnas website.

The Nasional Gallery of Indonesia is a reputable art gallery owned by Indonesian State. It roles as the venue for exhibitions and art events on International scale. To maintain the reputation then it employed the Independent Curators to cary out exhibitions. In recent years, the phenomenon of the proffesional Fine Art Artists show the hing spirits. To enrich their international publication then they began to realize their opportunity to exhibit at this gallery. Unfortunately, the gallery building is an adaptive reuse of the Cultural Heritage Building. The National Gallery building which has a distinctive Dutch Colonial architectural style has not been optimally utilized. So, it has existence has wide limitations and space limitation that unable to accommodate such high interests. On the other hand, Jabodetabek is stands for Jakarta-Bogor-Depok-Tangerang-Bekasi are the Greater City of Jakarta, has Cultural Heritage Buildings. There are many of architectural style of heritage buildings that has chance to be the exhibition spaces. The study is an idea to aim solutions of the availability of exhibition area in Jabodetabek to accommodate the Fine Art Artists interest of exhibiting. According to the Adaptive-Reuse of the National Gallery’s case, and by refers to the Grounded Theory Research method and Case Studies related to the Jabodetabek’s Cultural Heritage buildings. A Working Hyphotesis is Jabodetabeks’s Cultural Heritage Buildings opportunities as The National Gallery’s Satellites. The findings are the Satellite Galleries Rank, and the Properties Display recommendation based on the Cultural Heritage’s rules that can be offered to make them as the “Satellite” as well as the ICOM as the National Gallery of Indonesia’s standard.

We are pleased to present an interview with Director of the Liechtenstein National Gallery Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein, Dr. Malsch Friedemann Dr. Friedmann Malsch, has been cooperating with Russia for more than 15 years in organizing and conducting exhibitions, preparing publications. He is actively engaged in educational and publishing activities. In 2018, with the support of the Liechtenstein Museum, a translation of the book dedicated to the Black Square painting by Kazimir Malevich was released. At the presentation, Friedman Malsch called this book a publication that turns the prevailing ideas about the icon of Suprematism. The architecture of the new building of the Liechtenstein State Museum in Vaduz, which opened in 2000, interprets in its own way the plastic idea of Suprematism, the idea of a black square. The creation of the Swiss architects Meinrad Morger, Heinrich Degelo and Christian Kerez with a very complex and extensive internal infrastructure from the outside is a combination of two laconic volumes: a white and black cube. Material for the construction is taken from the vicinity of the city.
