Using National Family Business Panel data combined with national natural disaster and federal disaster assistance data, the purpose of the study was to investigate relative contributions of human, social and financial capital; natural disaster exposure; and federal disaster assistance to business-owning family resilience over time for male and female family business owners. With a theoretical foundation of Sustainable Family Business and Conservation of Resources theories, the study examined 311 small family firms from the National Family Business Panel. Federal disaster assistance explained a significant amount of variance in firm-owning resilience. Higher levels of federal disaster assistance were associated with lower family firm resilience for male-owned businesses and higher family firm resilience for female-owned businesses. This study advances knowledge of firm sustainability after natural disasters by adding to the conceptualization and measurement of family firm resilience; by having baseline firm financial data prior to disaster exposure; by utilizing a national, representative, longitudinal family firm sample; by including a range of natural disasters and federal disaster assistance; and by including family resilience over time.

By concentrating a stimulus on the domestic economy, Buy National clauses are argued to lead to higher fiscal multipliers. We show that this argument falls short. Although it is true that domestic demand for domestic goods is increased, at the same time foreign demand for domestic goods is reduced by adverse changes in the real exchange rate. The two effects are of similar magnitude, so that Buy National clauses do not lead to a stronger stimulus to GDP. Apart from that, restricting the stimulus to domestic products makes the stimulus more expensive, because cheap foreign products are ignored. Consequently, real public consumption is lowered by Buy National clauses.

Purpose: The study examines the influence of the adoption of the National Health Insurance Scheme on organizational commitment with particular reference to Kwara State, Nigeria. Method: A cross-sectional descriptive study was adopted for the study. A purposive sampling technique was employed to select 350 civil servants from the Ministry of Health in Ilorin. Data were analyzed with the assistance of mean and ordinary least square method of estimation. Result: The results reveal that the adoption of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) has a significant influence on organizational commitment. This indicates that the “modus operandi” of the scheme is a strong predictor of organizational commitment in Nigeria. Implication: Deduction to be made from this result is that the “modus operandi” of the scheme is a strong predictor of organizational commitment. This indicates that the sustainability of the NHIS is a guarantee in the country. This will pave the way to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of ‘universal health coverage, such as financial risk protection, access to quality essential health care services, and access to safe, effective, quality, and affordable essential medicines and vaccines for all by 2030.

We examine the extent to which host country income inequality influences multinational enterprises’ (MNE) expansion strategy for foreign production investment, depending on their specific strategic objectives. Applying a transaction cost framework, we predict that national income inequality has an inverted U-shaped relationship with foreign production investment. As inequality increases, MNEs accrue lower transaction costs arising from interactions with various local actors, leading to higher probability of investment. As income inequality increases further, its effect on location attractiveness will become negative, as its attraction effect is increasingly offset by additional monitoring, bargaining, and security costs owing to the more fractious nature of high inequality societies. In addition, we suggest that the impact of income inequality is contingent on investment objectives: The inverted U-shaped relationship is stronger for efficiency-seeking investment but weaker for market-seeking and competence-enhancing investments. We find substantial support for our hypotheses through an analysis of 27 years (1986-2012) of data on Japanese MNEs’ overseas production entries.

Countries have been shown to be competitive in specific industries. This paper contends that this industrial specialization can be understood in terms of an affinity between national `models of capitalism' and the characteristics of industrial task environments. Put differently, industry-specific competitiveness is conceived to arise out of a fit between patterns of national business systems and patterns of industrial task environments. Specifically, the paper will propose a relationship between the communitarian or individualistic nature of national business systems and the organization-specificity of knowledge in an industry. More communitarian business systems are thought to enjoy a competitive advantage in industries with a high organization-specificity of knowledge, i.e. in industries that rely more on the long-term accumulation of organization-specific knowledge within tightly-knit corporate communities. More individualistic business systems, on the other hand, are thought to enjoy a competitive advantage in industries with a low organization-specificity of knowledge, i.e. in industries that thrive more on the speedy dissemination or reallocation of company-unspecific knowledge through a constant reconfiguration of social relationships. The paper will offer some illustrations of these proposed relationships in terms of the competitive profiles of the United States, Japan, Germany and Britain.

Family business succession is a key topic that has attracted considerable attention from researchers, especially in the last decade. Most research, however, is based on case studies with limited applicability and fails to present comparisons across international contexts that highlight differences in succession processes. We apply expectation states theory to analyze a sample of 128 observations in two Southern European countries, Portugal and Greece. We study configurations of successors’ characteristics, family business characteristics, the existence (or absence) of a succession plan, and successors’ motivation to succeed. Our aim is to reveal how these issues affect successors’ perceptions of preparation for succession using fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA). Family businesses are a dominant organizational form all over the world, and succession issues are critical for the sustainability of family businesses. Our findings suggest that different configurations of conditions influence successors’ perceptions of preparation for family business succession. Moreover, we verify the influence of cultural differences on these processes. This research helps fill a gap in the literature, showing the role of a set of characteristics in successors’ perceptions of preparation for family business succession. Our conclusions provide insight into the types of policies that can promote successful family business succession.

By developing strategies for family-run business, the country should boost confidence of young people regarding the possibilities these kinds of business offers in accomplishing individual ambitions.To be able to successfully the challenges of the environment, Family businesses have to adapt to new market conditions. Following the market supply and demand and appropriately responding to the same family businesses contribute to strengthen their market position. Also spur innovation, contributes to this kind of businesses to successfully cope with market competition.Development documents in all these years of independence of the Republic of Macedonia contain provisions for strengthening the small business sector by providing financial support to the operations of the companies, especially new and young enterprises. But despite the fact that several projects were opened several institutions and provide some funds for financing, there remains the conclusion that helping and strengthening the development of family businesses should be treated as a permanent process in the interest of faster employment, using creative potential employees, laid-off workers, young and educated people. Commitment to helping the development of family business is a constant and long-term process, which should be a permanent task and goal of macroeconomic policy.The absence of a quick and relatively easy access to capital, information and new technology, requiring long-lasting process in the policy of encouraging the development of family businesses.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explain the link between national business system (NBS) and innovation decisions at the firm level by offering sequentially ordered sense-making mechanisms that enable the formation of firm-specific knowledge repositories and knowledge-processing capabilities. Design/methodology/approach This study engages in an extensive scale development effort to collect representative data about the NBS in the Pakistani setting, complemented by relevant validity and reliability tests. The overall theoretical model was tested on 214 firms by means of a structural equation modeling approach, using partial least-squares algorithms. Findings The results statistically supported the role of firm-level knowledge repositories (intellectual capital) and knowledge exploration and exploitation capabilities (absorptive capacity) as sequential mediators in the association of NBS and firm-level innovation. Besides, bridging networks of lateral ties among Pakistani businesses are found to be more effective than bonding networks of vertical ties in encouraging radical innovations. Originality/value This study significantly extends the literature about the NBS approach. It provides specific sense-making mechanisms (i.e. priming, triggering and editing) about how abstract institutional templates constituted at the business system level are translated into firm-level actionable sets by the help of intangible resource repositories and processes that guide knowledge exploration and exploitation.

Мета роботи – дослідити проблеми функціонування державної мови в сучасному бізнес-просторі, оскільки відомо, що тривалий час представники приватних бізнес-компаній нею майже не послуговувалися; відповідно до цього було поставлено завдання: сформулювати основні етапи опанування української мови як державної для фахівців зазначеної категорії осіб.Методи. У дослідженні використано теоретичні методи (аналіз стандартів і стану функціонування державної мови в різних галузях господарства); ретроспективний аналіз власного педагогічного досвіду з організації й проведення навчальних занять; емпіричні – педагогічні спостереження, тестування й спеціальні завдання для діагностичного зрізу рівня знань працівників бізнес-сфери; статистичні методи для кількісного та якісного аналізу отриманих емпіричних та експериментальних даних.Результати. З’ясовано, що тема функціонування державної мови в бізнес-сфері залишається малодослідженою. Мате-ріалом послугувала практична мовна діяльність групи слухачів одного з приватних підприємств. Проаналізовано загальну характеристику слухачів, рівень володіння державною мовою перед навчанням і після, розроблено шкалу оцінювання рівня мовних навичок. Зазначено, що в російськомовному середовищі серед представників великого й малого бізнесу виникають труднощі стосовно україномовної комунікації, спричинені низьким рівнем мовленнєвих умінь і навичок, відсутністю необхід-ної лексичної бази, наявністю суржику й росіянізмів тощо.Висновки. У результаті навчального процесу було визначено основні етапи опанування української мови як державної. Заува-жено, що важливе місце в підготовці слухачів належить мотиваційному та базовому етапам; надано методичні рекомендації сто-совно їх мовної підготовки. Доведено, що навіть при низькій мовній базі, але за умови високої мотивації можна досягти достатньо-го рівня мовленнєвих знань, умінь і навичок для подальшої професійної діяльності й комунікації державною мовою. The purpose. The objective of the article is to study the problems concerning state language functioning within current business environment. It is known that for a long period of time representatives of private businesses have hardly ever used it. It caused the necessity to define the basic stages of Ukrainian language acquisition as a state one by professionals in business sphere.Methods. The set of scientific methods are applied in the article: theoretical (analysis of standards and status of state language functioning in different economical spheres); retrospective analysis of own pedagogical experience in educational process organization and training sessions; empirical (pedagogical observations, testing and special sessions to detect the level of expertise among business sphere representatives; statistical methods (qualitative and quantitative analysis of empirical and experimental data received).Results. It is found that the issue of state language functioning in business sphere is still poorly investigated. Practical activity by the employees of a private enterprise is served as a ground for this study. General characteristic of trainees, their level of state language acquisition before and after training is analysed, and the evaluation scale of language skills level is developed. It is noted that in Russian-speaking environment representatives of large-scale and small-sized businesses face a lot of challenges while communicating in Ukrainian, caused by low level of language skills, lack of necessary basic vocabulary, existence of surzhik (mixed Russian-Ukrainian dialect) and russicismes (use of Russian words instead of Ukrainian ones).Conclusions. The educational process resulted in defining the main stages of Ukrainian acquisition as a state language. It is emphasized that it is motivational and basic stages that play the important role in preparation of trainees which led to developing methodical recommendations concerning state language acquisition. It is proved that in spite of a low level of language improved motivation helps business people achieve sufficient level of language knowledge and skills for further professional activity and communicating in state language.

The article presents the results of the implementation of the National Project “Small and Medium Business and Support for Individual Entrepreneurial Initiatives” and federal projects included in it: “Improving the conditions for doing business”; “Expanding the access of small and medium-sized businesses to financial resources, including concessional financing”; “Acceleration of small and medium-sized businesses”; “Creation of a support system for farmers and the development of rural cooperation”; “Popularisation of Entrepreneurship”. We critically analysed the national project as a whole and assessed the newest situation of small and medium-sized businesses. Further, we carried out the analysis of the achievement of the leading indicators of the national project. Also, we considered the financing and the results of the achievement of indicators in the context of federal projects that are part of the national project for 2018-2020.We assessed the risks of non-fulfilment of the goals and objectives set in the projects. The article also examines the effectiveness and evaluates the effectiveness of state support measures for small and medium-sized businesses affected by the spread of coronavirus infection in 2020. Besides, we analysed the main changes in the regulatory legal framework within the framework of implementing the national project. The analysis of the updated structure and activities of the national project “Small and Medium Enterprises and Support for Individual Entrepreneurial Initiatives” has been carried out.

Анотація:
As a newly developed city, Langsa City is one of the right areas to try. Introduced as a Service City, the city strives to meet the needs of its people. However, because Langsa City has minimal in industry, especially in medium and high scale industries, only consumptive needs can be met. Therefore, trade is a growing business, especially in retail businesses. Unfortunately, community retail businesses in recent years have experienced a decline in turnover, the main cause is the inability of local retail businesses to compete with national retail. Therefore the purpose of this study was to analyze the competition of national local economic retail business in a socio-economic way in Langsa City. Using a qualitative approach, the results show that the running of the national retail business in Langsa City has made local retailers turnover decline by an average of 30 percent and every year there are local retail businesses that have small business capital must to shut-down their businesses. The decline in the turnover of local retailers also had an effect on the reduced amount of zakah distributed, the reduction of other social contributions such as contributions to the construction of mosques, dayah, and poor people in addition to the amount of tax that also declined.Whereas in the national retail business the positive effect obtained is from tax contributions. The expectation of local retailers to the government in Langsa City is to prioritize the sustainability of local businesses in order to maintain the stability of the people’s economy.

Анотація:
Subject. The article discusses the financial aid the State provides to business during the COVID-19 crisis. Objectives. We analyze the financial aid the State provides to the Russian businesses as a single model, considering the national specifics. Methods. The study involves methods of analysis and synthesis, comparative analysis, generalization, etc. The study is based on factual and official data for H1 2020. Results. There is a national model of the financial aid the State provides to businesses in Russia, which is intended to temporarily provide businesses with funds in force majeure and ensure their uninterrupted operation, protect small and medium-sized business and market competition. We analyze key tools of the State support and substantiate our suggestions how it should be maintained for certain types and areas of business in the post-crisis period. Conclusions and Relevance. The current situation with COVID-19 made the State organize business support, provide businesses with financial resources on certain terms or use business protection tools.

AbstractDuring July and August 2004 the principal investigators visited business executives in five Caribbean nations. Thirty-six businesses and government agencies were interviewed. General results showed significant e-commerce efforts underway in these countries. Leading companies interviewed were experiencing modest to significant successes in this business approach, but all were experiencing impacts from national characteristics. Characteristics examined in detail were factor conditions, demand conditions, support industries, firm strategy, and government policy. Results showed generally supportive business conditions but problems existed in government agencies, niche markets, the banking sector, and industry sector. The results of this study will suggest improved strategies for SMEs in developing countries and for national governments seeking to use e-commerce to expand business activities.

In the article the author substantiates the importance of forming a favourable business environment for the development of national small and medium businesses. State plans and programs for the development of small and medium business in Ukraine are analyzed; the main directions and expected results of their achievement are revealed. The key provisions of the Strategy for the development of small and medium business in Ukraine for the period until 2020 are determined and its content is analyzed. The effectiveness of the state policy on stimulating the development of domestic small and medium businesses in Ukraine is investigated. Particular attention is paid to the experience of economically developed countries, and it is determined that Ukraine needs to create a favourable business environment for the development of national small and medium enterprises. The experience of foreign countries shows that small and medium-sized businesses are the basis of sustainable development of the state, which provides national welfare due to production of competitive products, job creation and raising the level of effective employment of the population, activating the country’s innovative potential, ensuring its competitiveness in the international market. The concept of the National Program for the Development of Small and Medium Enterprise for 2014-2024 is considered, and it is emphasized on the ways of overcoming the problems of small and medium business development. It has been stated that strategic initiatives should not be the result of generalization of previous projects and programs, but a qualitatively new action plan for the development of small and medium businesses. The attention is paid to the fact that the development and expansion of the business sector has been declared as a one of the priorities of the state economic policy in Ukraine. Priority in addressing tasks regarding the solution of the issue of small and medium enterprises development is to overcome the burdensome procedures of state regulation, the instrument of which may be a deregulation, which should provide an improvement of the business climate for small business in the referral article.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate how buyers and sellers in cross-cultural business relationships manage cultural differences to ensure functional, successful business relationships. Failure to consider specific cultural issues may lead to the failure of business ventures crossing national borders. To succeed in today’s global business market, it is critically important to understand and manage cultural differences. Adapting to each other’s cultures is one way of managing cultural differences between business actors. Design/methodology/approach – A qualitative, explorative approach examining both sides of the exchange dyad was adopted to obtain insight into adaptation as perceived by both buyer and seller. Findings – The results of this study indicate that mainly Norwegian sellers adapt to the Russian culture and way of conducting business. This is explained by power asymmetry between partners, as well as cultural barriers and lack of cultural sensitivity from the Norwegian partners. Still, the business relationships function well. Practical implications – Knowledge of and applying strategies for managing cultural differences should be helpful for business managers engaged or planning to engage in business ventures with Russia and Norway – especially those doing so for the first time. Originality/value – The study provides new and important information about West-East business relationships and how to manage cultural differences in cross-cultural business relationships. The study shows that business relationships can function well in spite of the absence of some factors previously found to have detrimental effects on these relationships. In addition, the study investigates both sides of the buyer-seller dyad, which is a limitation in previous studies of adaptation.
