This essay considers the meanings of Sino-Japanese collaboration before the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937–45) through the personal diary of one collaborator, Bai Jianwu (1886–1937). Rather than debate the veracity of the diary narrative, the author considers the diary as a “political performance”—as an assembly of formulaic elements borrowed from contemporary discourse, historical example, and generic conventions that was designed to locate collaboration within a range of conceivable responses to China's predicament. While the emerging narratives of national resistance typically portrayed collaboration as an unthinkable transgression, the collaboration narrative of the diary, shifting and often ambivalent, illuminates the terms on which Bai was prepared to argue that collaboration with the Japanese was an acceptable choice, and the place that he allowed collaboration in the story of his life.

This study aims to determine the effect of the diary media on the ability to write narratives for Semester III students. The sample in this study was the 60th semester students of the Department of English Language Education at the Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University in Jakarta totalling 60 students. Sampling using a multistage random sampling technique. The method used is an experimental method, with non-equivalent experimental design. Data collection was performed using a narrative writing test and analysed using the t test. The results showed that the diary media had a significant effect on the ability to write student narratives with a coefficient of t count > table = 6.41> 1.70 at a significant level α = 0.05. These results indicate that the diary media can be used as an alternative media in learning to write student narratives. Therefore, teachers need to know the importance of using appropriate learning media to develop students' narrative writing skills.

Objectives We implemented narrative medicine in clinical practice using the Digital Narrative Medicine (DNM) platform. Methods We conducted a preliminary, open, uncontrolled, real-life study in the oncology and radiotherapy departments of Istituto di Ricovero e Cura a Carattere Scientifico National Cancer Institute Regina Elena, Rome, Italy. We recruited adult Italian-speaking patients who then completed the DNM diary from the start of treatment. The primary endpoint was DNM feasibility; secondary endpoints were health care professionals’ opinions about communication, therapeutic alliance, and information collection and patients’ opinions about therapeutic alliance, awareness, and coping ability. We used open- and closed-ended questions (scores 1 to 5) and a structured interview. Results Thirty-one patients (67%) used the diary (84% women). Health care professionals’ mean scores for feasibility and utility were ≥4.0. Patients’ utility scores were related to health care professionals’ feedback regarding the narratives. The main advantages for health care professionals were the opportunity to obtain relevant patient data and to strengthen communication and patient relationships (mean scores 4.4–5.0). Both groups strongly encouraged introduction of the diary in clinical practice. Conclusion Use of the DNM in oncology patients assisted clinicians with understanding their patients experience.

This paper analyzes the rhetoric of a manuscript written in Budapest immediately after the Holocaust to record the personal experiences of the author, Margit K. I examine the text in terms of the role of writing and narration in processing trauma and how these appear in the narrative. In her memoirs, Margit K. had imbued her personal history of persecution with meanings that facilitated their integration into her life history and her self-definition. She chose to narrate her tragic past using euphemistic, mitigating, or ironic language and constructed her stories to have positive outcomes while attempting to write as little of the pain and tragedy of her persecution as possible. The euphemizing narrative methods used in the memoirs disappear entirely in the diary and the themes discussed in the diary are also different, which shows the advantages of constructing a desired past within the genre of the memoirs in contrast to the more strictly defined genre of diary-writing.

This paper examines the narrative tropes of Hungarian adolescent diaries written during and after World War II, primarily focusing on the rhetorical forms of beginning a diary that fall into two categories characteristic of adolescent diary-writing – beginning with an introduction describing the author and their environment, or beginning with a memoir in which the author summarizes the most important events of the period between their birth and the start of the diary. The paper also discusses how adolescents personified their diary books and intended those for their adult selves in the course of diary-writing as dialogue.

The Diary of a Man Who Followed Exile is a diary that records the experience of a father, grandfather, or teacher who is going to exile by a son, grandchild, or disciple. As can be guessed from the relational peculiarity of the exile and the accompanist, the exile and the accompanist are inevitably very closely connected emotionally. Therefore, the diary of the exile does not merely record the experience and the subconscious of the individual without any purpose and intention. The ultimate goal of the diary is to claim the injustice of exile and to restore their damaged reputation. As a result of examining 〈Namhaengnok〉, 〈Bukcheonilrok〉, and 〈Changguekil〉, it was found that narrative strategies of direct explanation and indirect explanation were used to achieve such narrative goals. The descriptive method of direct clarification contributes to securing the basis for identity by providing diverse and rich information. Indirect explanation is not an objective basis, but it is a very intense and effective narrative strategy in that it provides a basis for sympathy that can convince innocent exile. Through the process of examining what narrative strategies were used in the exile diary for identity, we can get clues to understand other exile diaries belonging to the same category, and furthermore, we can identify the universal emotions of human beings who are afraid of history.

The article deal the general patterns and main trends in the formation and development of the genre of diary as a self-sufficient form in the national literature in the XVIII century, in the coverage of anti-imperial ideas on the example of memoirs "Home Protocol" (1717-1767) of General Treasurer Yakov Markovich, "Diary or Journal" (1722) and "Diary" (1727 - 1752) of General Cornet Nikolai Khanenko. Analyzes the special approach of J. Markovych and M. Khanenko to the creation of the diary genre. It is proved that the memoirs are characterized by a special manner of narration, reminiscent of a clerical reporting document. The authors described events from their own lives, intertwining them with national ones. Fixing the moments with inherent factual accuracy helped to create a holistic canvas of our history during the period of the development of imperial colonial policy in Ukraine. An important feature of the diary narrative is the conciseness and introversion of the narrative, which is explained by the concealment of independent comprehension and assessment of events by diaries. The social level of everyday poetics emphasized the colonial position of Cossack Ukraine in the eighteenth century. A systematic analysis of the genre features of the diaries "Home Protocol" by J. Markovych, "Diary or Journal" and "Diary" by M. Khanenko genre-wise and problematically interconnected with the Cossack chronicle, suggests that the superficial content of notes on historical events in Ukraine and abroad its boundaries, conciseness and introversion of the story, fixation of moments with factual accuracy, the intertwining of personal life events with national ones contributed to the establishment of anti-imperial themes in national literature, that influenced trends in national literature.

This article discusses the evolution of self-inscription from the soul-searching autobiographical narratives characteristic of personal diaries to the highly referential and indirect language articulated in today’s social media. To trace the origins of this shift, this study considers blogs of the first decade of the 21st century where traditional diary narrative started to transform into a new type of ego-text. It suggests that the spread of online quizzes and questionnaires in the beginning of the 21st century played an important role in the creation of the referential Self characteristic of today’s online rhetoric. Entering the realm of traditional ego-text, these prestructured tools replaced evident self-narration with a disguised indirect version, providing ready-made identity templates and establishing clear rules of information circulation.

The specifics of the diary as a genre of literature is considered. An attempt is made to understand the genre nature of the diary and identify the characteristic features of its narrative structure. Turning to the diary entries of Bakhyt Kairbekov, we analyze the subspecies of the diary as a genre and pose the question of the intertextual specifics of the poet’s diaries. We reveal such characteristic features of the narrative structure of diaries as chronology, dating, aphorism, dialogics, evaluation. It is proved that the specific form of the diary is one of the individual style of a artistic person who realizes his abilities in various fields of artistic work. We establish that the diary form of writing is characterized by a number of features that can be implemented to a greater or lesser extent in each diary: 1) the frequency, regularity of recordings; 2) the relationship of records with current, and not with long-past events; 3) the spontaneous nature of the records; 4) literary rawness of records; 5) addresslessness or uncertainty of the addressee; 6) the intimate and therefore sincere, private nature of the notes.

Gabriella Trebits was a prisoner of the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp between November 1944 and April 1945. The spaces present in her diary include both the places of the camp and her typhoid hallucinations. Gabriella described venues through their sensuous dimensions. Since the sensory experiences of everyday life mingled with her visions, her diary became a “textual journey” between real and imagined places. Her narratives helped her to express the difficulties caused by her physical environment and the confusion caused by her hallucinations. As a result, the references to changes in her sensory impressions created a discursive space for the diarist to express her feelings. Since her narrative depicts a suffering and painful condition, we use Joanna Bourke’s concept of pain talk in our analysis. Moreover, the diary demonstrates that it was possible for typhoid patients to connect with their environment despite their isolated situation. Even on the periphery of the camp space, social life persisted. This exploration will not only uncover the narrative strategy of one diarist but also contribute to a deeper understanding of the ways in which tens of thousands died of starvation and diseases―without mass executions or gas chambers―in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp during the spring of 1945.

In Vladimir Sharov’s novels, the text structure of the narrative is of crucial importance. The text structures of Sharov’s novels are diverse: letters, diaries, archives, notes, treatises, dissertations, etc. Sharov consciously chooses the diary as a form of narration, as a stylisation of the document of one’s personal presence in history. The diary allows Sharov to reveal the characters’ psychology, to identify their attitude to reality, its perception, and image. The article analyses the form of the diary in the novels The Rehearsals (1992), The Old Girl (1998), Raising Lazarus (2003). In The Rehearsals, the diary of Jacques de Sertan, a French director and actor brought to Russia by the will of fate, becomes the key form of the narration. For several years (1660s), Sertan describes the plot of the rehearsals of a religious mystery about the life of Christ staged under the patronage of Patriarch Nikon. The meaning of the diary at the level of the author’s consciousness is to establish the laws of historical mystery. The author comes to the idea that the idea (political, theocratic, utopian) influences the historical process. Service to the idea and fascination with it entail a desire to change, remake reality. This is how, according to Sharov, the endless revolutions of Russian history arise leading to national divisions, opposition of one part of the people against another. The algorithm of Russian history is extremely clear: repeated splits lead to absurd dead ends. The narration in The Old Girl is connected with the comprehension of the most important event in Russian history for Sharov’s authorial historiosophy: the Revolution of 1917 and the political repressions of the 1930s. The basis of the narration is texts of different statuses that the author imitated: first of all, the diary of the main character Vera Radostina. The diary here is a personal document of one’s own life and a document of the historical era of the 1920s and 1930s. This is the narrative function of Vera Radostina’s diary, stories about the revolution, its role, its meaning for a person and for contemporaries. The author’s modeling of the diary of a character such as Vera is associated with the perception of the role of a person in the historical process of the 1920s and 1930s. Vera turns out to be identical with the epoch. She is fascinated by the grandeur and phenomenality of what is happening. She understands that the revolution should be involved in the general historical flow, that it is necessary to “enter the revolution into the history of Russia”. From the point of view of the author’s consciousness, with a common historical pattern, the revolution turns out to be a catastrophe in the national historical process. In Raising Lazarus, the diary performs three functions. At the plot level, it logically ends the search for the missing manuscripts. At the level of the consciousness of Nikolai Kulbarsov, the author of the diary, it “documents his identity”, confirming the continuity of his self. At the level of the author’s consciousness, the diary becomes a fact of the resurrection of the individual in the abyss of history.

Personal narratives are assumed to be primary sources of the essential meaning of lived experiences of dying. In this study, I analyzed the personal diary of Miraç Fidan, a terminally ill adolescent with advanced cancer who kept a diary until her death at the age of 15. Miraç’s Diary, also published as a book, was subjected to hermeneutic phenomenological narrative analysis. Inferences were drawn regarding the following basic elements: (a) The dynamics in which Miraç lived and (2) her perceptions of herself, her immediate environment, and her experiences. Suffering seems to be the main experience dominating Miraç’s life, which I examined with regard to two dimensions: suffering caused by inevitable factors and suffering caused by preventable/changeable factors. The results suggest that if various causes among contextual factors are neutralized, then the quality of the existential experience determined by the inevitable factors would increase.

In modern ecologically oriented interdisciplinary research, there is an increased interest in narrative methodology, which allows us to take a new look at seemingly well-established ideas about the relationship between nature and man. Narratives about how a person destroys the world around him, and how dangerous his active intervention in biogeocenoses (where the person himself is immersed as a biological being) is, allows modern scientists to direct their efforts to develop not only technological innovations, but also to take into account risk intensity. In addition, the narrative focuses scientists’ attention on already existing environmental problems. As a result of such a narrative study of the problems that arise in the process of technological transformations of the surrounding world, the ecological consciousness of the scientific community returns to the historical origins of the modern global anthropological crisis, and which means to cultural and historical reflection on its’ own activities. The narrative as an element of the scientist's self-awareness contributes to the orientation of research towards the search for strategies for overcoming ecological deadlocks. For a clearer indication of the cultural and historical role of the ecological narrative, the author of the article refers to case-studies. In this context not only the narratives of specific scientists (ecologists, biologists, biochemists, etc.), which include a reflexive autobiographical component, but also of collective subjects performing an act of narration (for example, the interactive project “365 days. Our environmental diary”) are of particular importance.

Drawing from literary and cultural studies, this paper situates U.S. adaptations of Anne Frank’s diary in the 1950s within a lineage of other films about historical genocide, including Schindler’s List, Hotel Rwanda, and The Killing Fields. Analysis of these narrative adaptations matters because it helps us better understand the danger of what critic Dominick LaCapra calls “harmonizing narratives,” or stories that provide the viewer with an “unwarranted sense of spiritual uplift” (14). Tracing the metamorphosis of Frank’s own diary from play to film adaptation, this article builds on existing scholarship to focus on how, in the wake of what has become known as the Holocaust, Hollywood began to construct popular and simplified understandings of complex genocidal crimes—all in the name of celebrating globalized humanity. In the first part of the article, I take a longer view of these adaptations by situating U.S. interpretations of Frank’s diary within a lineage of other Hollywood versions of historical genocide, including The Killing Fields, Schindler’s List, and Hotel Rwanda. I argue that in making Anne Frank’s story morally simplifying and ultimately uplifting for U.S. audiences—in other words, shaping it into what critic Dominick LaCapra calls a “harmonizing narrative”—these Broadway and Hollywood adaptations privileged rose-colored narratology for that would influence future mainstream cinematic representations in dangerous ways. The second part of the paper then considers cinematic alternatives from outside of Hollywood (such as Canada, Rwanda, and Spain) that challenge these harmonizing narratives by enlisting a mise en abyme structure—in other words, the nesting of stories within stories—that ultimately suggest the full representation of genocide is impossible. By making false promises of harmony, Hollywood’s interpretation of Frank’s story has, in turn, limited our understanding of subsequent genocides. On the other hand, alternative modes of cinematic storytelling—most notably, ones such as Ararat that fracture a coherent narrative—compel the audience to grapple with questions of spectatorship, agency, and above all, the problems of representation.

Abstract This paper examines Tara Rai’s Chhapamar Yuwatiko Diary [‘A Diary of a Young Guerrilla Girl’] (2010) – a memoir which describes a 15-year-old girl’s experience of first armed encounter, subsequent detainment, and release from the custody towards the end of the Maoist war in Nepal. We analyze the author’s narrative of adversity and distress, using thematic analysis. Three themes, namely, (1) perception of impending death, (2) severe stress reactions, and (3) gradual recovery are found in temporal succession. In a subsequent analysis, we examine using content analysis the personal, group, and socio-political factors linked to these dominant themes to understand the dynamics associated with Rai’s understanding of personal experience, and adjustment to violence. Discussion of the findings orient the readers of this narrative not only to how Rai’s perception of her trauma experience changes but also to how this account can inform the way people negotiate the trauma of war.

“Muslims were not the first in the Near East to interpret dreams. This type of divination had a long history, and Muslims were not ignorant of that history.” The interest of early Arab Islamic cultures in dreams can be proved by the vast literature on dreams and their interpretation as well as dream accounts written in diverse historical texts. The Ottoman Empire was no different in that it also shared this culture of dream interpretation and narration. Unlike past scholarship that ignored the significance of dreams, the number of studies addressing the subject has increased in the recent decades, thanks to the growing tendency of scholars to see dreams as potential sources for cultural history. However, as Peter Burke has stated, scholars and historians in particular must bear in mind the fact that “they do not have access to the dream itself but at best to a written record, modified by the preconscious or conscious mind in the course of recollection and writing.” Historians must be aware of the fact that dream accounts might be recorded by dreamers who recounted how they wanted to remember them. The “reality” of the dream, in a sense, may be distorted. However, dream accounts, distorted or not, can provide a ground for historical analysis because they may reveal the most intimate sentiments, aspirations, and anxieties of the dreamer. Such self-narratives can provide the historian with information necessary to map the mindset of a historical personage, because “such ‘secondary elaboration’ probably reveals the character and problems of the dreamer as clearly as the dream itself does.” This paper focuses on a sampling of dreams related in an 18th-century Ottoman self-narrative to provide insight into the life and mind of an Ottoman governor. I will try to demonstrate how the author of the narrative made meaning of those dreams and revealed his aspirations.

The story of Robinson Crusoe comes to us in the guise of a first-person narrative based in part on a diary. Successor texts have traditionally adopted the same narrative situation, exploiting it in order to foreground ideas of authorship, textual authority and linguistic dominance. This essay pays particularly close attention to those Robinsonades that have not followed this pattern and have instead opted to omit meta-narration and intradiegetic narrator figures. It considers to what ends this is done in three modern Robinsonades: William Golding’s Lord of the Flies (1954), J. G. Ballard’s Concrete Island (1974), and Michael Dudok de Wit’s animated film The Red Turtle (2016).

The article provides insights on how print-based multimodal texts can be utilized to generate ideas and help students to write narrative texts. A qualitative approach in research design was employed with a pre-test and a writing assignment. NAPLAN’s (2010) Writing-Narrative Marking Guide was adapted to evaluate the respondents’ narrative essays. Moreover, diary notes were used as instruments to gather data. The respondents were five Year 10 students from a suburban secondary school in Selangor, Malaysia. The findings indicated that the illustrated poem ‘Pond’ enabled the respondents to generate ideas for their writing. The narratives also fulfilled the criteria of text structure, ideas, character and setting, and vocabulary as stated in the Analytical Rubric for Narrative Marking. Therefore, the respondents were able to write narratives. However, the utilisation of picture stimulus only helped to generate ideas to a certain extent. The quality of narrative writing was also further improved through feedback provided during the teaching and learning sessions. The findings also revealed that the respondents were able to achieve the ‘can do’ statement as stated in the CEFR Assessment Format. Furthermore, the use of print-based multimodal texts encouraged multimodal and visual literacy as the respondents exploited semiotic resources within the texts. This study suggested that print-based multimodal texts could be used as instructional materials in narrative writing; thus, teachers should consider them to promote effective learning.

This paper aims to focus on the reception of The Diary of Anne Frank in the post-Holocaust era. While as a personal narrative The Diary has been immensely successful in acquiring the sympathy of the reader towards the teenaged victim and her family, it has been far from being beyond the realm of criticism. The apparently simple diary of the traumatized teenaged holocaust victim has sparked off revisionist and anti-Semitic debates and discussions which problematizes not only the premises of the composition, but the authorship as well.

The aim of the study was to examine and reflect on the learning experiences of a neophyte sport psychologist. Over a 9-week applied internship the first author kept a reflective diary that followed Boud’s (2001) three elements of journal writing. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (Smith & Osborn, 2003) of the data identified 11 themes from the diary, 8 of which were contextualized in 3 self-narrative accounts, including the working environment, anxiety, confidence, being a performer, being a learner, relationships, feedback and practical content. Reflecting on these incidents the neophyte’s supervisor offers another perspective, and along with the narrative accounts, furthers our understanding of important factors, and indicates recommendations to ensure quality training for professional development.

Aelius Aristides' Sacred Tales is a complex literary text, and its first book—the diary—puzzles scholars, as it has no parallel in the entire work. This paper offers a justification for this section by arguing for a deliberate contrast between the diary and Books 2–6 of the Sacred Tales, as a result of which the latter section is crafted as a narrative about Asclepius. I will first identify a large series of shifts in the ST: starting with Book 2, change concerns the protagonist, which from Aristides' abdomen turns to Asclepius, the narrator, dream interpretation, genre, and arrangement of the events. Secondly, I discuss the impact of these shifts upon the readers' response: while the diary invites the readers to relive the everyday tension between known past and unknown future, the spatial form of Books 2–6 creates the opposite effect, turning the readers' attention away from the human flow of time towards Asclepius, and leading them to perceive features of his divine time.

Religious conversion is basic to the narrative of Mary Rich’s life that she began writing in 1672. It is fundamental to her diary of many years. Where the autobiography emphasizes her marriage and the conversion that followed, the diary is an affirmation of that conversion and a reassessment of her marriage. Conversion brought Rich closer to God at the same time it affected what had become a troubled relationship with her husband. Concerned for his soul, and not only for her own, her diary offers a testimony of Mary Rich’s spiritual love for both her husband and God.

The basis of the trilogy about Vitalin by A. A. Grigoriev is the diary entries of the autobiographical character. The writer consciously refers to this form of narration, since it allows the most complete disclosure of the inner world of the protagonist, conveying his thoughts, feelings, emotions, showing the complexity and inconsistency of his nature. Thanks to fragments of the diaries, the themes of the stories expand: from love experiences to philosophical reflections, reflections on the truth, the meaning of life, and the search for happiness. The protagonist’s diary also influences the chronotope of stories, expanding the space and time of the narrative, introducing a life background, background of events into the work, and at the same time enriching our understanding of the character. The author of the article briefly dwells on the autobiographical elements in the life of Arseny Vitalin, notes his resemblance to the character of the novel by M. Yu. Lermontov — Pechorin. Special attention is paid to the genre originality of Grigoriev’s works, their simultaneous isolation and inclusion in the cycle, trilogy. Besides the article discusses the diary fragment “The Dreamer’s Diary” and its meaning in the text. Psychologically convincingly, the author shows that Vitalin, immersed in love experiences, but unable to share his thoughts with someone close to him, finds an outlet for his pent-up feelings in keeping a diary, on the pages of which he gives free rein to his feelings and actions.

The state’s official narrative about these clandestine groups is mirrored in alternative documents and narratives. This article focuses on the Old Calendarist Orthodox monastic community of the Dormition of the Mother of God Monastery in the Strada Televiziunii in Bucharest at the end of the communist regime. asanrok is the exile diary of Park Woo-hyeon (朴遇賢, 1829-1907), a scholar from the late Joseon Dynasty, who was exiled to Heuksando for 12 years, as reported in Geumpa Yujip. This study focuses on the descriptive characteristics of Jasanrok and explores the universality and individuality of Jasanrok as a diary of an exile. One of the descriptive features of Park Woo-hyeon’s Jasanrok is that the frequency and number of records are closely related to the circumstances and contents of exile. For example, as the description of the reason for exile must be recorded in detail, numerous accounts have been included in this regard. Although there are not many narratives on the exile course, the frequency of their occurrence is high because of the need for objective records. On the other hand, as the opening and ending parts play a functionally appropriate role, the text has a structurally stable appearance, emotions are expressed dramatically through appropriate descriptions, and the objectivity and realism of the information can be secured through citations. Such descriptive characteristics of Jasanrok can be re-examined by dividing it into the aspects of universality and individuality. Universality as an exile diary is a narrative characteristic that is inevitably acquired because it records an experience that is both unique and general; additionally, being a diary, individuality is retained. It may be stated that it is a characteristic that appears because it is a strictly literary document that reveals the personality of the author who wrote it. Its universality corresponds to the correlation between the frequency and quantity of records and the circumstances of exile, and the use of the introduction and conclusion, and of description and citation corresponds to individuality.

Background. Guidelines for the implementation of narrative medicine in clinical practice exist; however, in Italy, no standard methodology is currently available for the management of oncological patients. Since 2017, at the “Regina Elena” National Cancer Institute, studies using “digital narrative diaries” (DNMLAB platform) have been carried out; this article focuses on a pilot, uncontrolled, real-life study aiming to evaluate the utility of DNM integrated with the care pathway of patients with bone and limb soft tissue sarcomas. Methods. Adult patients completed the diary during treatment or follow-up by writing their narrative guided by a set of narrative prompts. The endpoints were: (a) patients’ opinions about therapeutic alliance, awareness, and coping ability; (b) healthcare professionals’ (HCPs’) opinions about communication, therapeutic alliance, and information collection. Open- and closed-ended questions (Likert score: 1–5) were used to assess the items. Results. At the interim analysis of data from seven patients and five HCPs, DNM was shown to improve: (a) the expression of patients’ point of view, the perception of effective taking charge, disease awareness, and self-empowerment (score: 4.8/5); (b) patients’ communication, relationships, and illness knowledge (score: 4.6–4.8/5). Conclusions. The preliminary results supported the need to integrate patients’ narratives with clinical data and encourage further research.

ABSTRACTTeachers, mainly digital immigrants, find challenges to chase technology to integrate digital learning in the classroom. The previous studies revealed that some digital immigrant teachers, the newcomers of the digital age, lacked the confidence to integrate technology during teaching since they were aware of the fact that their students were more proficient than they were. This study depicts the struggles of a digital immigrant EFL teacher-educator to engage with technology that aims at improving the English teaching performance. A digital immigrant EFL teacher from a high-quality education college in Myanmar was invited to be the research participant. Open-ended questionnaires and semi-structured interviews with both the research participant and students were applied to collect the data. The triangulation data revealed that the digital immigrant EFL teacher found difficulties in creating her digital learning media and improving her teaching technology integration competence due to her insufficient knowledge and IT skills. It also revealed that integrating technology improved the teacher's teaching performance; however, it destructed the objectives of the teaching due to technology deviation on students' attention.ABSTRAKGuru, terutama yang imigran digital, mengalami tantangan besar dalam mengejar ketertinggalan mereka terhadap teknologi yang bertujuan mengintegrasikan pembelajaran digital di kelas.

The World War II diary A Woman in Berlin: Eight Weeks in the Conquered City (2005) documents one woman’s story of survival in the spring of 1945 in Berlin, during which upward of 130,000 women were raped by soldiers of the Red Army. First, this essay introduces the politics of recuperating the English translation of the diary within the context of the scant supporting historical documentation and memorialization of Berliner women’s experience during the occupation. Second, it demonstrates how the diary produces a feminist account of survival and a narrative for collective trauma by examining the diarist’s representations of the effects of rape and rubblestrewn Berlin. Third, the essay details the complicated publication history of the diary through a consideration of the relationship between the trauma sustained by the survivors of mass rape and the blows to German national identity that it documents.

Abstract. Most communication studies on children and media have focused solely on television. Other popular media products such as narrative audio tapes have been neglected. The present article addresses factors that influence preschoolers’ selective exposure to these tapes. In line with past research, the emotional attractiveness of a story’s protagonist and some formal design elements of the product are regarded as determinants of children’s frequency and persistence of using a given tape. An experimental diary study with 79 preschoolers revealed that both factors do in fact influence children’s usage of the tape. The resulting implications for fundamental and applied research on children and media are discussed.

The article is devoted to research of specific genre of diary in creative heritage of P. Kulish, O. Nikitenko and T. Shevchenko. Intraliterary comparative analysis allowed to comprehend nature of genre and to define his basic characteristics. The special attention is spared to the general moments in diaries language, orientation on a future reader, atmosphere of “expectation”. In the diaries the author acts as a part of the action, moreover, he is the hero of the story, it is therefore obvious that description of all adventures are typically narrated from the author’s perspective so the author and the narrator merge – and the narrative adopts a first person narrative. The communicative techniques in the structure of the text are described briefly – implicit comparative studies, evaluative judgments, creation of the image of a stranger, “other”, address to the reader, etc. Also are comprehended separate theses about correlation of looks of writers on religion, friendship, the phenomenon of silence in the text. The multidimensional character of silence opens up, the specific of silence (silence’s philosophical potential) in text: variants of literary pausing/silence can be found throughout diary, they are expressed by several types of figures of silence. The meaning of silence shifts according to its context in diary. The especially interesting discoveries are based on general moments in both diaries – critical thinking, engaging the reader in the text, deep existential thoughts, digression (partial retreat from a main theme in text). Comparison of texts of diaries gives an opportunity to trace an origin, forming, statement in Ukrainian literature of such variety of diary as a writer.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to shed light on the ways in which World War II ideologically interacted with education and social networks within a school context, on the basis of a pupil's diary. More specifically, this paper looks at pupils’ active involvement in contesting the patriotic school climate and deals with the effects of what happens when the predominant school's belief or value system is questioned “from below”. Design/methodology/approach – The paper presents a case study of ideological conflict in a Flemish school, the Sint-Jozefscollege in Turnhout, during the second half of 1940. It is primarily based on the diary of one pupil. Findings – The author argue that the diary can reveal the ways in which the war did or did not penetrate language and daily school life and that this type of research enables us to grasp the many complexities of past society, or even, to some extent, offers a corrective for the “grand narrative” of both educational and World War II history, which unavoidably present some generalisations. This paper suggests that this grand narrative could benefit from the confrontation with personal documents that focus more on private interpretations of these big events. Originality/value – As a result of the prevalent use of “traditional” written sources in historiography, the history of war-time schooling “at the chalk face” in large part remains virgin territory. The diary is one of few sources that leave us with an idea of pupils’ experiences in the period under review.

This paper is a qualitaive case study regarding one of learning strategies in English as Foreign Language (EFL) writing, literally called “student’s diary”. The students’ diary can be defined as a brief narrative text created by students that might be a brief summary of what they have learnt, teachers’ feedback and evaluation, or even a general impression about their writing process. It aims to naturally encourage students to conduct a comprehensive reflection on their progress in EFL writing through “a diary” in each writing class they have. As what has been perceived among EFL scholars, the use of student’s diary is effective in enhanching student’s interest in writing and it can improve students’ writing as well. The participants of this study are 30 students of EFL classroom in the fourth semester at STKIP Muhammadiyah Bogor who have taken the various writing subjects in their previous semesters. The researcher tried to investigate how the typical of student’s diary for learning reflection is, how the real implementation of student’s diary is conducted in EFL learners’ learning process, and to what extent it can be effective related to the strengths and weaknesses involved in the implementation process. Advisory and suggestion on giving corrective feedback regarding linguistic aspects in students’ writing in the use of student’s diary as well is presented as the implication of this research for further related studies

Background: Clinical reasoning and decision making within health care are as important as ever in a world where evidence-based health care and patient outcomes are highly valued. It is increasingly recognized that decisions are not made in isolation, and are influenced by many factors, both intrinsic and extrinsic. Expert and novice practitioners share reasoning techniques, and there are many interpretations of reasoning paradigms within the field of health care. Methods: A reflective diary was kept for 3 months linking personal reflections on a particular clinical decision with theoretical learning on clinical reasoning. Several decision-making paradigms were looked at in relation to the decision, with a deeper focus on narrative reasoning. Narrative reasoning resonated particularly with the author's previous experience studying literature. Results: The clinical decision was usefully analyzed using a narrative reasoning strategy. The decision made by the author was perhaps contrary to the evidence, and yet had a positive outcome. The positive outcome of the decision was looked at within the context of evidence-based practice and ethical practice. Conclusions: Narrative reasoning comes from within the interpretive research model and puts the patient's experience at the heart of decision making. Narrative reasoning can be a valuable way of combining diagnostic, management, and ethical aspects of care. Further research—particularly in podiatry, where research is lacking—could identify helpful reasoning strategies for care of patients with long-term chronic conditions or complex conditions.

We present in thiswork a critical reading of the poem “Parque das ruínas”, by the Brazilian poet Marília Garcia, published in the homonymous book. The writer places her text on the threshold between poem, diary and essay, thus addressing the issue of photography as a meansof recording capable of narrating events that can go beyond the narrative of the word, but without putting one form over another. We have poetry and criticism attached to the same narratological measure. For purposes of analysis, we will resort to the studies of Martelo (2012), on poetry and image; Rezende (2013), about contemporary poetry; Ludmer (2007), on post-autonomous literature; among others.

This paper dwells on the issue of selfhood in Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s Diary (1831 – 1832). It explores individuation against three major presences in the poetess’s life: her father (and family), Hugh Stuart Boyd, and literature. The employed strategy of research includes a phenomenological (interspersed with feminist touches) focus on select excerpts from the Diary which reveal the writer’s concern for Self as the recognition of the priority of a precursory Other. Observations are made on the limits of human perception, time and space as human variables, the ontological essence of interpretation, and memory as a premise for cognizing life as care. A rare example of prose-fiction in the poetess’s oeuvre, her diary could be read as an instance of simultaneous self-nullification and self-affirmation, which offers possibilities for a dialectical definition of female genius as dialogue through narrative.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to recognise communication as a central challenge between autistic and non-autistic individuals as the autistic voice is not silent, but lacks involvement at any level other than that of the observed participant (Milton and Bracher, 2013; NAS and Ask Autism, 2014; Parsons et al., 2009). The main research question, therefore, explores data to understand how some autistic individuals conceptualise their experiences. Design/methodology/approach The research design, informed by autistic people, used a flexible methodology to accommodate their communication preferences. Methods contextualised autistic narratives regarding support requirements and service provision and located power within these, acknowledging autistic individuals as the expert “insider”. This is critical in tackling access to services and social barriers to inclusion impacting negatively on well-being. Visual and written data were gathered using collage and narrative diary methods, and presented and analysed as three individual case studies (anonymised as Michael, Sophie and Peter) and as a meta-analysis providing a broad picture of themes. Findings Findings showed similarities and differences in a number of key areas, so highlighting the importance of the smaller narratives within the broad picture of autism. Originality/value This study’s key contribution to autism research is that it blends IPA, narrative analysis and discourse analysis with distinct sites of analysis (narrative process, images of autism, audiencing, turning points and discourse). Furthermore, the flexible methodology employed facilitates inclusion of autistic voices by embracing their diverse communication preferences.

In the former, the novel, presented as the diary of Jacques Revel, a young Frenchman spending a year in Bleston (a fictitious English city vaguely similar to Manchester), describes the narrator’s struggle to survive in a double – spatial and temporal – labyrinth. The first of them, formed by Bleston’s streets, squares and parks, is symbolized by the City plan. During his one year sojourn in the city, using its plan, Revel learns patiently how to move in its different districts, and in its strange labyrinth – strange because devoid any centre – that at the end stops annoying him. The other, the temporal one, symbolized by the diary itself, the labyrinth of the human memory, discovered by the narrator rather lately, somewhere in the middle of the year passed in Bleston, becomes, by contrast, more and more dense and complex, which is reflected by an increasinly complex narration used to describe the past. However, at the moment Revel is leaving the city, he is still unable to recall and to describe the events of the 29th of February 1952. This gap, this absence, symbolizes his defeat as the narrator, and, in the same time, the human memory’s limits. In Degrees temporal and spatial structures are also very important. This time round, however, the problems of the narration itself, become predominant. Considered from this point of view, the novel announces Gerard Genette’s work Narrative Discourse and his theoretical discussion of two narratological categories: narrative voice and narrative mode. Having transgressed his narrative competences, Pierre Vernier, the narrator of the first and the second parts of the novel, who, taking as a starting point, a complete account of one hour at school, tries to describe the whole world and various aspects of the human civilization for the benefit of his nephew, Pierre Eller, must fail and disappear, as the narrator, from the third part, which is narrated by another narrator, less audacious and more credible.

AbstractThis essay proposes an excursion into the labyrinth of Cai Peihuo's (1889–1983) self-reflection recorded in a diary that he kept between 1929 and 1936. Cai is canonized as an anti-colonial figure and one of the key players in the home front Taiwanese mobilization movement during the 1920s and 1930s when the island was under Japanese rule. The analysis of his diaristic writing is significant in two respects. First, it sheds light on the divergent manners in which this first generation of Japanese-educated, bilingual middlemen envisioned their futures within particular temporal and spatial settings. Second, it examines ways of comprehending how the recorded experiences of Cai's encounter with social change reflect his inner dilemma in identifying with the colonial Weltanschauung. To this end, I focus on those passages in the diary that elucidate Cai's linguistic activism, language proposals and orthographic alternations that characterize the diary narrative.

The subject of the study is the genre of the diary of a madman by the Russian writer N. V. Gogol and the Chinese writer Lu Xin and their stories of the same name "Notes of a Madman". The object of the research is the primary narrative, the consciousness of the hero and the author, and the social consciousness in the diary genre. The author examines in detail the typological similarities and differences of the genre of the diary of a madman by N. V. Gogol and Lu Xin, analyzes the structure of the text, modes of artistry, the personality of the hero and the author's voice from a psychological and cultural-historical point of view, traces the theme of madness in the Russian and Chinese literary tradition. The main conclusions are that the genre of the diary of a madman by N. V. Gogol and Lu Xin is characterized by tragedy, lyricism and a full-fledged image of the personality and inner world of the hero, and that both writers combine rational and irrational factors in their work, combine the point of view of the hero and the author's voice in the form of a first-person narration on behalf of a madman. The author's special contribution to the research of the topic is to identify the differences in the types of thinking of two heroes, two writers and two countries, and to indicate the psychological and cultural-historical grounds for the appearance of this genre in Russian and Chinese literature. The novelty of the research lies in synthetic research, typological comparison, and the use of methods of psychoanalysis and poststructuralism.

Most papers analysing Bram Stoker’s Dracula concentrate on the Gothic tradition in which it is embedded, although another interesting feature of the novel is that it includes diary entries, logs, letters and other types of texts. Focusing on the complex issue of the novel’s genre, we use an interdisciplinary methodology based on Bakhtin’s theoretical work and the principles of functional pragmatics to highlight the importance of these text types, especially that of the diary, and to detect some of the special features of the genre. Diaries are not only texts produced in the scope of the narrative but they also function as a mental shelter, a moral obligation, and a weapon. We analyse metapragmatic reflections as signs of metapragmatic awareness belonging to the language act of writing or reading a diary. Finally, we underline the dynamic relation of the genre as an abstract category and as a concrete instance of that category in a text.

In this article, we propose “autopsychography” as a form of self-narrative inquiry. Autopsychography seeks to track the shaping of creative paths when reflecting on lived experience as opposed to simply reporting what happened. We illustrate three major theoretical implications underpinning this concept: its rootedness in humanistic psychology that frames the human subject as the “whole person”; its emphasis on “change” and “growth,” core to educative experience; and its arts-informed features. We situate our discussions of autopsychography in the context of self-narrative approaches and we underscore its distinctiveness through comparisons with autoethnography as an already well-recognized methodology. We then present an autopsychographic study into Yanyue’s experience after submitting the softbound copy of her PhD thesis in which she experimented with an “oral diary” and the use of “found poetry” as ways of presenting data.

Based on D. N. Mamin-Sibiryak’s shorter prose (essays, stories), the author distinguishes various types of narrative, i.e. first and third person narration and a personal type of narration. In several stories of the essay type, special markers of the presence of the personal narrator stand out expressed in characteristic motifs of admiration, interest, and curiosity. The author proves that during the period of the so-called “second debut” (1881–1882), Mamin began with the development of the form of a personal narrator, most characteristic of the genre of the essay, and gradually switched to the auctorial type of narrative, typical already of the genre of the story and assuming the form of an objective narrator author. It is also noted that in the form of an auctorial narration, Mamin successfully mastered the device of non-personal direct speech, or the speech interference of the character and the narrator author, which brings us to the rudimentary forms of “personal” narrative. From about the mid-1880s, the tendency towards a personal narrative became apparent, which is most noticeable in the stories Korobkin, Doctor Osokin’s Amendment and Simply, which focus on the state of the split consciousness of the character who finds himself in a situation of “man in front of a mirror” (M. M. Bakhtin) and acts as a direct subject of cognition. In the works of the same period (stories Between Us, The Old Fife, and others) a personal type of narration emerges clearly, which continues logically in the stories of the 1900s (Influenza. Monologue, A Dumpling and a Blot). The writer pays attention to the situation of the relationship between the character and the stereotyped nickname imposed on him, a certain “foreign” word-nomination, which leads to an increase in the act of self-awareness of the character and an intensification of the personal narrative. Finally, the article concludes that the development of a personal point of view in the narrative structure of the story leads Mamin-Sibiryak to the emergence of a new genre form, i.e. a personal “monologue” or “diary”, as well as to focus on the aesthetic potential of receptive poetics, which reveals points of convergence with genre variation of Chekhov’s “discovery story”.

This article presents an episode recounted by Cambridge orientalist, Edward Granville Browne (7 February 1862–5 January 1926), as narrated in his travel classic, A Year Amongst the Persians, first published in 1893 (second edition published by Cambridge in 1927). This may be characterized, with some poetic licence as the first recorded ‘fireside’ in Bahá’í history. That is; the first-hand account given in the course of his historic contacts with the Bahá’ís in Persia (present-day Iran), during his stay in Shíráz, from Thursday 22 March 1888 to Saturday 6 April 1888 – at which time Browne, at long last, succeeded in his quest to discover further information on the Bábí religion which, by this time, had evolved into what is today known as the ‘Bahá’í Faith’ now an independent world religion established in all countries except for North Korea and the Vatican. Special focus is devoted to a meeting that took place in Shíráz on ‘Friday, March 30th’, 1888 – and which here is characterized as ‘the first recorded Bahá’í fireside’. Browne’s account – loosely compared, in the present study, to his original diary entries, digital scans of which are now made available by Pembroke College, Cambridge, as part of the ‘Browne Archive Project’ – is energized by his intense curiosity, which may fairly be described as a ‘passion’ for his research interest as a scholar. To ascertain the degree to which Browne’s narrative is a composite, reworked account – and not strictly sequential and chronological – it makes sense to draw some correspondences between Browne’s diary entries, and the Shíráz narrative in Chapter XI in A Year Amongst the Persians, as to both topics and dates. Briefly, the present article highlights Browne’s diary entries, folio by folio (page by page), from Vols. II and III of Browne’s diary, and offers some observations on corresponding passages in A Year Amongst the Persians.

This article examines the evolution and impact of Anne Frank’s The Diary of a Young Girl on postwar manga (print comics) and Japanese visual culture. The author argues that Anne’s enduring legacy in Japan, dating back to 1952, owes much to the ways in which the content of her Diary capitalizes on certain hallmarks of shōjo (girls’) manga culture, such as affective storytelling and character interiority. Moreover, as shown through a primary analysis of two emonogatari (illustrated story) versions of the Diary from 1964 and two manga versions from 1967, among others referenced, Anne Frank’s life and legacy inspires a hybridized narrative and visual style in manga that blends the emotionality and interiority of shōjo with the more graphic depictions of violence common to shōnen manga for young boys. In so doing, it encourages a reevaluation of the shōjo mode and its ability to bear witness to the physical violence and psychological trauma of the Holocaust.
