Information on morphological characteristics is a prerequisite to sustainable breed classification and conservation for proper management and utilization. The present study aimed to identify morphological characteristics that best classify the Sahel, Sokoto Red and West African Dwarf goats of Nigeria. A total of 584 goats of both sexes; Sahel (N = 163), Sokoto Red (N = 171) and West African Dwarf (N = 250) were randomly sampled and used for this study. The body parameters measured included body weight (BWT), height at wither (HW), body length (BL), paunch girth (PG), heart girth (HG) and ear length (EL). Multivariate technique of discriminant analysis procedure of SPSS 20.0 statistical package was used to classify the Sahel, Sokoto Red and West African Dwarf goats into their original breed. Accuracy of the classification was checked using cross-validation (leave-one-out, jack-knife or split-sample) procedure. Results showed that the mean body weight (kg) of Sokoto Red was significantly (P<0.05) higher than those of Sahel and West African Dwarf goats (23.596, 17.117 and 14.800 respectively). Highest correlation values were recorded between body weight and height at withers (0.777) in Sahel, body weight and paunch girth (0.707) in Sokoto Red and body weight and heart girth (0.797) in West African Dwarf goats. The discriminant analysis on body weight and the linear body measurements revealed that paunch girth and height at withers were the most discriminating variables and clearly separated and classified the three goat breeds into their breeds of origin. The discriminant function obtained correctly classified 99.0% of individuals from the sample of known goat populations. The classification accuracy of the function was cross-validated using the split sample method, and indicated a 99.0% success rate (97.5%, 100.0% and 99.2% of Sahel, Sokoto Red and West African Dwarf goats respectively). It was concluded that there was a clear separation between Barcha and Atlas goats. It was concluded that discriminant tool may be used successfully in the field to classify Sahel, Sokoto Red and West African Dwarf in the field, however there is need to complement this with molecular characterization using DNA marker for better conservation and improvement programme of indigenous goat genetic resources. Bitter leaf is an underutilized manageable size shrub in Nigeria despite its numerous nutritional benefits, economic value and potential as a dry season feed source for ruminant animals. This study was carried out to determine the haematological and biochemical profiles of West African Dwarf (WAD) goats fed graded levels of bitter leaf (Vernonia amygdalina) meal (BLM). Twenty-four WAD goats of both sexes and 5-7 months old were randomly allotted to four treatments of graded levels of BLM (0% BLM (Control Diet), 15% BLM, 30% BLM and 45% BLM diets) in a completely randomized design. The diets were used as supplements to a basal ration of Panicum maximum. The feeding trial lasted 20 weeks. The analysis of blood components, red blood cell (RBC), white blood cell (WBC) and parked cell volume (PCV) counts showed that there were no significant (P>0.05) differences in each of these parameters among the goats fed experimental diets. There were no significant differences in the albumin, alkaline phosphatase, cholesterol, creatinine, globulin, total protein and urea levels of the animals fed the different levels of bitter leaf meal (p>0.05). The result of the serum glucose of goats fed 30% BLM and 45% BLM was significantly (p<0.05) lower than that of CD. It is concluded that feeding of bitter leaf meal at the different levels had no adverse effect on the haematological and biochemical profiles of WAD goats except in the reduction of serum glucose in animals fed above 15% bitter leaf meal. L'essai d'alimentation a duré 20 semaines.

The role of the environment in the survivability of an animal is paramount and blood profiles are part of the indices for measuring the health status. Therefore, a study was carried out to determine the blood profile of prominent indigenous breed of sheep (Ram) viz: West African Dwarf, Yankasa, Balami and Ouda breeds reared in Ikorodu Local Government. A total of 20 rams were used comprising of five rams per breed, with average age of 2½ years weighing 31.13±4.8 kg. Blood samples were carefully collected from the rams into labeled sterile bottles containing EDTA for haematological examination and another set of bottles containing Lithium Heparin was used to collect blood for the serum biochemical analysis. Haematological parameter assessed were Packed Cell Volume (PCV), White Blood Cell (WBC), Red Blood Cell (RBC), while the biochemical parameters investigated were Total protein (Tp), Albumin, Glucose, Creatine Cholesterol, and Alkaline phosphatase (ALP). PCV was significantly (p<0.05) highest (32.25%) in Yankassa and lowest (26.25%) in Ouda. Yankasa had statistically (p<0.05) the higher 11.66g/dL Hb, followed by WAD (10.00), Ouda (9.60) and lower (9.20) in Balami. RBC (x10/ml) was significantly (p<0.05) higher in WAD (3.72) than other breeds and lowest in Ouda (3.11). MCV (fl) value was significantly lower in Yankasa (75.83) than other breeds and higher in Ouda (83.60). MCH (pg) was statistically (p<0.05) highest (30.89) in Yankasa and lower (26.93) in Balami. Yankasa had significantly(p<0.05) the higher (8673.00) Total WBC (mm3), followed by WAD (8453.25), Balami (6814.25) and least in Ouda (6718.75). Total protein was significantly (p<0.05) the higher (53.76) in WAD ram and lower (43.76) in Ouda. Yankasa ram recorded significantly (p<0.05) the higher Albumin content (5.45), glucose level (48.87), ALP (129.71) and significantly the least creatine (0.63) while significantly (p<0.05) the least values for Glucose were in Ouda (44.83), Albumin content and Alkaline phosphatase in Balami (4.33, 104.87 respectively). Cholesterol value was significantly the higher (93.22) in WAD and lower (79.70) in Balami. Results revealed significant differences in haematological and serological indices tested though all values obtained were within the normal range for sheep.

The paper presents data on the problem related to the location of Gabuleum and Theranda road stops on the Lisus-Naisus Roman road (Upper Moesia). The Lisus-Naisus Roman road intersected modern-day Kosova and Metohija stretching from the southwest to the northeast. The road, being the main road, connected the seaside to the inland. Not a considerable number of milestones, i.e. their fragments, was found on this part of the road. They are of significant historic value due to the fact that they represent genuine evidence of the existence of the Roman road in Kosovo and Metohija. During the research of ancient road stops and roads in the south of the province of Upper Moesia (Kosovo and Metohija), we used written sources and material remains on the terrain for which the data from Tabula Peutingeriana and Ptolemy's Geography were highly significant. The epigraph statues are equally important, i.e. milestones, road remains, settlements and other material remains.Their more detailed study and research can provide researchers with the opportunity to point to the main road routes, road stops and settlements in this area. The question of the location of Gabuleum road stop stays open due to the fact that the researchers have not reached a consensus till today on its location because, as previously mentioned, there have been many opinions. The prevalent opinion in the contemporary scientific circles, being based on Tabula Peutingeriana, is that Gabulem should be looked for near the place called Kukës in Albania where the White and Black Drim converge. By quoting Tabula Peutingeriana, the traces of the Roman presence as well as the unsafe road route to the North, the location of Therande is linked to the territory of Metohija, near the places such as Suva Reka or Ljubižda, in the valley of the Miruša river, not far from Prizren.

Animal production output has suffered significantly due to climate change, necessitating thorough research on breed-specific adaptive mechanism, particularly for goats, in order to better understand these animals’ tolerance level. The comparative physiological adaptation of the West African Dwarf (WAD) goat indigenous to the humid climate of West Africa and the Kalahari Red (KR) goat introduced to the humid zone of Southwestern Nigeria from the semi-arid sub-tropical zone of South Africa was investigated. Fourteen goats consisting of seven WAD and seven KR aged between 2 and 4 years were housed in a well ventilated concrete-floored pen. The animals were zero-grazed and fed concentrate and Bracharia decumbens hay for six months consisting of two seasons; cold-dry season (November – January) and hot dry season (February – April). Rectal temperature, respiratory rate, heart rate and pulse rate were monitored twice daily once a week. Kalahari Red goats had significantly higher (p<0.001) rectal temperature (38.97 vs. 38.39o C), respiratory rate (51.20 vs. 47.98 breaths / min) and pulse rate (61.56 vs. 60.22 pulses / min) than WAD goats while heart rate was similar (p<0.05) in the two breeds. Rectal temperature, respiratory rate and pulse rate were lower in both breeds in the cold dry season than in the hot dry season. All the physiological parameters measured in this experiment were significantly (p<0.001) affected by time of day and week of sampling. Rectal temperature, respiratory rate, heart rate and pulse rate were all higher in the afternoon than in the morning while the highest values were recorded in the 20th, 22nd, 23rd and 3rd week of sampling, respectively. Rectal temperature, respiratory rate and pulse rate were lower in both breeds in the cold dry season than in the hot dry season. The study concluded that rectal temperature, respiratory rate and pulse rate were all higher in the Kalahari Red than the West African Dwarf goats. Though the adaptive physiological responses of both breeds to the humid tropical climate appeared to be adequate, however, the West African Dwarf goat appeared to cope better in the hot-dry season while the Kalahari Red goat appeared to cope better in the cold-dry season.

This study focused on comparing growth traits (body weights at birth, 3-month weaning and 6-month post-weaning) as well as growth curves of Kalahari Red (KR), a newly introduced goat breed in Nigeria and West African Dwarf (WAD) goat semi-intensively managed. Data on growth traits and weekly live weights were collected from 124 kids consisting of 61 KR and 63 WAD goats. The data were subjected to least squares analysis of variance to evaluate the effects of breed, sex, season, birth type and parity. The results showed that KR kids exceeded WAD kids in body weights at birth (2.30±0.06 kg vs 1.56±0.06 kg), 3-month weaning (8.88±0.57 kg vs 3.88±0.20 kg) and 6-month post-weaning (13.97±0.86 kg vs 5.05±0.37 kg). Corresponding pre-weaning average daily gain (ADG) estimates were 84.44±2.44 g and 31.73±1.16 g and post-weaning ADG were 61.88±1.81g and 24.84±1.21 g. Growth patterns of the two breeds were described using four different non-linear models: Brody, Gompertz, Logistic and Von Bertalanffy. Models were compared using parameter estimates (asymptotic weight 'A', integration constant 'B' and rate of maturity 'k'). Model with good fit was adjudged using coefficient of determination (R2) and residual mean squares (RMS). The KR goats had higher parameter estimates than WAD goats. Von Bertalanffy model had the highest 'A' estimates (24.24±0.94 kg vs 11.99±0.54 kg for KR and WAD goats). Gompertz had highest 'B' and 'k' estimates (5.37±0.20 vs 3.38±0.09) and (0.19±0.01 vs 0.13±0.01) for KR and WAD goats. All four growth models generally had R2 exceeding 99% and low RMS, hence giving good fit to the observed growth data. They can be used to implement feeding and management decisions that will optimize productivity. Information on superior growth performance of the Kalahari Red goat can be utilized to further investigate genetic improvement of the indigenous West African Dwarf population through crossbreeding.

The Leichhardt Highway is a six hundred-kilometre stretch of sealed inland road that joins the Australian Queensland border town of Goondiwindi with the Capricorn Highway, just south of the Tropic of Capricorn. Named after the young Prussian naturalist Ludwig Leichhardt, part of this roadway follows the route his party took as they crossed northern Australia from Morton Bay (Brisbane) to Port Essington (near Darwin). Ignoring the usual colonial practice of honouring the powerful and aristocratic, Leichhardt named the noteworthy features along this route after his supporters and fellow expeditioners. Many of these names are still in use and a series of public monuments have also been erected in the intervening century and a half to commemorate this journey. Unlike Leichhardt, who survived his epic trip, some contemporary travellers who navigate the remote roadway named in his honour do not arrive at their final destinations. Memorials to these violently interrupted lives line the highway, many enigmatically located in places where there is no obvious explanation for the lethal violence that occurred there. This examination profiles the memorials along Leichhardt’s highway as Gothic practice, in order to illuminate some of the uncanny paradoxes around public memorials, as well as the loaded emotional terrain such commemorative practices may inhabit. All humans know that death awaits them (Morell). Yet, despite this, and the unprecedented torrent of images of death and dying saturating news, television, and social media (Duwe; Sumiala; Bisceglio), Gorer’s mid-century ideas about the denial of death and Becker’s 1973 Pulitzer prize-winning description of the purpose of human civilization as a defence against this knowledge remains current in the contemporary trope that individuals (at least in the West) deny their mortality. Contributing to this enigmatic situation is how many deny the realities of aging and bodily decay—the promise of the “life extension” industries (Hall)—and are shielded from death by hospitals, palliative care providers, and the multimillion dollar funeral industry (Kiernan). Drawing on Piatti-Farnell’s concept of popular culture artefacts as “haunted/haunting” texts, the below describes how memorials to the dead can powerfully reconnect those who experience them with death’s reality, by providing an “encrypted passageway through which the dead re-join the living in a responsive cycle of exchange and experience” (Piatti-Farnell). While certainly very different to the “sublime” iconic Gothic structure, the Gothic ruin that Summers argued could be seen as “a sacred relic, a memorial, a symbol of infinite sadness, of tenderest sensibility and regret” (407), these memorials do function in both this way as melancholy/regret-inducing relics as well as in Piatti-Farnell’s sense of bringing the dead into everyday consciousness. Such memorialising activity also evokes one of Spooner’s features of the Gothic, by acknowledging “the legacies of the past and its burdens on the present” (8).Ludwig Leichhardt and His HighwayWhen Leichhardt returned to Sydney in 1846 from his 18-month journey across northern Australia, he was greeted with surprise and then acclaim. Having mounted his expedition without any backing from influential figures in the colony, his party was presumed lost only weeks after its departure. Yet, once Leichhardt and almost all his expedition returned, he was hailed “Prince of Explorers” (Erdos). When awarding him a significant purse raised by public subscription, then Speaker of the Legislative Council voiced what he believed would be the explorer’s lasting memorial —the public memory of his achievement: “the undying glory of having your name enrolled amongst those of the great men whose genius and enterprise have impelled them to seek for fame in the prosecution of geographical science” (ctd. Leichhardt 539). Despite this acclaim, Leichhardt was a controversial figure in his day; his future prestige not enhanced by his Prussian/Germanic background or his disappearance two years later attempting to cross the continent. What troubled the colonial political class, however, was his transgressive act of naming features along his route after commoners rather than the colony’s aristocrats. Today, the Leichhardt Highway closely follows Leichhardt’s 1844-45 route for some 130 kilometres from Miles, north through Wandoan to Taroom. In the first weeks of his journey, Leichhardt named 16 features in this area: 6 of the more major of these after the men in his party—including the Aboriginal man ‘Charley’ and boy John Murphy—4 more after the tradesmen and other non-aristocratic sponsors of his venture, and the remainder either in memory of the journey’s quotidian events or natural features there found. What we now accept as traditional memorialising practice could in this case be termed as Gothic, in that it upset the rational, normal order of its day, and by honouring humble shopkeepers, blacksmiths and Indigenous individuals, revealed the “disturbance and ambivalence” (Botting 4) that underlay colonial class relations (Macintyre). On 1 December 1844, Leichhardt also memorialised his own past, referencing the Gothic in naming a watercourse The Creek of the Ruined Castles due to the “high sandstone rocks, fissured and broken like pillars and walls and the high gates of the ruined castles of Germany” (57). Leichhardt also disturbed and disfigured the nature he so admired, famously carving his initials deep into trees along his route—a number of which still exist, including the so-called Leichhardt Tree, a large coolibah in Taroom’s main street. Leichhardt also wrote his own memorial, keeping detailed records of his experiences—both good and more regretful—in the form of field books, notebooks and letters, with his major volume about this expedition published in London in 1847. Leichhardt’s journey has since been memorialised in various ways along the route. The Leichhardt Tree has been further defaced with numerous plaques nailed into its ancient bark, and the town’s federal government-funded Bicentennial project raised a formal memorial—a large sandstone slab laid with three bronze plaques—in the newly-named Ludwig Leichhardt Park. Leichhardt’s name also adorns many sites both along, and outside, the routes of his expeditions. While these fittingly include natural features such as the Leichhardt River in north-west Queensland (named in 1856 by Augustus Gregory who crossed it by searching for traces of the explorer’s ill-fated 1848 expedition), there are also many businesses across Queensland and the Northern Territory less appropriately carrying his name. More somber monuments to Leichhardt’s legacy also resulted from this journey. The first of these was the white settlement that followed his declaration that the countryside he moved through was well endowed with fertile soils. With squatters and settlers moving in and land taken up before Leichhardt had even arrived back in Sydney, the local Yeeman people were displaced, mistreated and completely eradicated within a decade (Elder). Mid-twentieth century, Patrick White’s literary reincarnation, Voss of the eponymous novel, and paintings by Sidney Nolan and Albert Tucker have enshrined in popular memory not only the difficult (and often described as Gothic) nature of the landscape through which Leichhardt travelled (Adams; Mollinson, and Bonham), but also the distinctive and contrary blend of intelligence, spiritual mysticism, recklessness, and stoicism Leichhardt brought to his task. Roadside Memorials Today, the Leichhardt Highway is also lined with a series of roadside shrines to those who have died much more recently. While, like centotaphs, tombstones, and cemeteries, these memorialise the dead, they differ in usually marking the exact location that death occurred. In 43 BC, Cicero articulated the idea of the dead living in memory, “The life of the dead consists in the recollection cherished of them by the living” (93), yet Nelson is one of very few contemporary writers to link roadside memorials to elements of Gothic sensibility. Such constructions can, however, be described as Gothic, in that they make the roadway unfamiliar by inscribing onto it the memory of corporeal trauma and, in the process, re-creating their locations as vivid sites of pain and suffering. These are also enigmatic sites. Traffic levels are generally low along the flat or gently undulating terrain and many of these memorials are located in locations where there is no obvious explanation for the violence that occurred there. They are loci of contradictions, in that they are both more private than other memorials, in being designed, and often made and erected, by family and friends of the deceased, and yet more public, visible to all who pass by (Campbell). Cemeteries are set apart from their surroundings; the roadside memorial is, in contrast, usually in open view along a thoroughfare. In further contrast to cemeteries, which contain many relatively standardised gravesites, individual roadside memorials encapsulate and express not only the vivid grief of family and friends but also—when they include vehicle wreckage or personal artefacts from the fatal incident—provide concrete evidence of the trauma that occurred. While the majority of individuals interned in cemeteries are long dead, roadside memorials mark relatively contemporary deaths, some so recent that there may still be tyre marks, debris and bloodstains marking the scene. In 2008, when I was regularly travelling this roadway, I documented, and researched, the six then extant memorial sites that marked the locations of ten fatalities from 1999 to 2006. (These were all still in place in mid-2014.) The fatal incidents are very diverse. While half involved trucks and/or road trains, at least three were single vehicle incidents, and the deceased ranged from 13 to 84 years of age. Excell argues that scholarship on roadside memorials should focus on “addressing the diversity of the material culture” (‘Contemporary Deathscapes’) and, in these terms, the Leichhardt Highway memorials vary from simple crosses to complex installations. All include crosses (mostly, but not exclusively, white), and almost all are inscribed with the name and birth/death dates of the deceased. Most include flowers or other plants (sometimes fresh but more often plastic), but sometimes also a range of relics from the crash and/or personal artefacts. These are, thus, unsettling sights, not least in the striking contrast they provide with the highway and surrounding road reserve. The specific location is a key component of their ability to re-sensitise viewers to the dangers of the route they are travelling. The first memorial travelling northwards, for instance, is situated at the very point at which the highway begins, some 18 kilometres from Goondiwindi. Two small white crosses decorated with plastic flowers are set poignantly close together. The inscriptions can also function as a means of mobilising connection with these dead strangers—a way of building Secomb’s “haunted community”, whereby community in the post-colonial age can only be built once past “murderous death” (131) is acknowledged. This memorial is inscribed with “Cec Hann 06 / A Good Bloke / A Good hoarseman [sic]” and “Pat Hann / A Good Woman” to tragically commemorate the deaths of an 84-year-old man and his 79-year-old wife from South Australia who died in the early afternoon of 5 June 2006 when their Ford Falcon, towing a caravan, pulled onto the highway and was hit by a prime mover pulling two trailers (Queensland Police, ‘Double Fatality’; Jones, and McColl). Further north along the highway are two memorials marking the most inexplicable of road deaths: the single vehicle fatality (Connolly, Cullen, and McTigue). Darren Ammenhauser, aged 29, is remembered with a single white cross with flowers and plaque attached to a post, inscribed hopefully, “Darren Ammenhauser 1971-2000 At Rest.” Further again, at Billa Billa Creek, a beautifully crafted metal cross attached to a fence is inscribed with the text, “Kenneth J. Forrester / RIP Jack / 21.10.25 – 27.4.05” marking the death of the 79-year-old driver whose vehicle veered off the highway to collide with a culvert on the creek. It was reported that the vehicle rolled over several times before coming to rest on its wheels and that Forrester was dead when the police arrived (Queensland Police, ‘Fatal Traffic Incident’). More complex memorials recollect both single and multiple deaths. One, set on both sides of the road, maps the physical trajectory of the fatal smash. This memorial comprises white crosses on both sides of road, attached to a tree on one side, and a number of ancillary sites including damaged tyres with crosses placed inside them on both sides of the road. Simple inscriptions relay the inability of such words to express real grief: “Gary (Gazza) Stevens / Sadly missed” and “Gary (Gazza) Stevens / Sadly missed / Forever in our hearts.” The oldest and most complex memorial on the route, commemorating the death of four individuals on 18 June 1999, is also situated on both sides of the road, marking the collision of two vehicles travelling in opposite directions. One memorial to a 62-year-old man comprises a cross with flowers, personal and automotive relics, and a plaque set inside a wooden fence and simply inscribed “John Henry Keenan / 23-11-1936–18-06-1999”. The second memorial contains three white crosses set side-by-side, together with flowers and relics, and reveals that members of three generations of the same family died at this location: “Raymond Campbell ‘Butch’ / 26-3-67–18-6-99” (32 years of age), “Lorraine Margaret Campbell ‘Lloydie’ / 29-11-46–18-6-99” (53 years), and “Raymond Jon Campbell RJ / 28-1-86–18-6-99” (13 years). The final memorial on this stretch of highway is dedicated to Jason John Zupp of Toowoomba who died two weeks before Christmas 2005. This consists of a white cross, decorated with flowers and inscribed: “Jason John Zupp / Loved & missed by all”—a phrase echoed in his newspaper obituary. The police media statement noted that, “at 11.24pm a prime mover carrying four empty trailers [stacked two high] has rolled on the Leichhardt Highway 17km north of Taroom” (Queensland Police, ‘Fatal Truck Accident’). The roadside memorial was placed alongside a ditch on a straight stretch of road where the body was found. The coroner’s report adds the following chilling information: “Mr Zupp was thrown out of the cabin and his body was found near the cabin. There is no evidence whatsoever that he had applied the brakes or in any way tried to prevent the crash … Jason was not wearing his seatbelt” (Cornack 5, 6). Cornack also remarked the truck was over length, the brakes had not been properly adjusted, and the trip that Zupp had undertaken could not been lawfully completed according to fatigue management regulations then in place (8). Although poignant and highly visible due to these memorials, these deaths form a small part of Australia’s road toll, and underscore our ambivalent relationship with the automobile, where road death is accepted as a necessary side-effect of the freedom of movement the technology offers (Ladd). These memorials thus animate highways as Gothic landscapes due to the “multifaceted” (Haider 56) nature of the fear, terror and horror their acknowledgement can bring. Since 1981, there have been, for instance, between some 1,600 and 3,300 road deaths each year in Australia and, while there is evidence of a long term downward trend, the number of deaths per annum has not changed markedly since 1991 (DITRDLG 1, 2), and has risen in some years since then. The U.S.A. marked its millionth road death in 1951 (Ladd) along the way to over 3,000,000 during the 20th century (Advocates). These deaths are far reaching, with U.K. research suggesting that each death there leaves an average of 6 people significantly affected, and that there are some 10 to 20 per cent of mourners who experience more complicated grief and longer term negative affects during this difficult time (‘Pathways Through Grief’). As the placing of roadside memorials has become a common occurrence the world over (Klaassens, Groote, and Vanclay; Grider; Cohen), these are now considered, in MacConville’s opinion, not only “an appropriate, but also an expected response to tragedy”. Hockey and Draper have explored the therapeutic value of the maintenance of “‘continuing bonds’ between the living and the dead” (3). This is, however, only one explanation for the reasons that individuals erect roadside memorials with research suggesting roadside memorials perform two main purposes in their linking of the past with the present—as not only sites of grieving and remembrance, but also of warning (Hartig, and Dunn; Everett; Excell, Roadside Memorials; MacConville). Clark adds that by “localis[ing] and personalis[ing] the road dead,” roadside memorials raise the profile of road trauma by connecting the emotionless statistics of road death directly to individual tragedy. They, thus, transform the highway into not only into a site of past horror, but one in which pain and terror could still happen, and happen at any moment. Despite their increasing commonality and their recognition as cultural artefacts, these memorials thus occupy “an uncomfortable place” both in terms of public policy and for some individuals (Lowe). While in some states of the U.S.A. and in Ireland the erection of such memorials is facilitated by local authorities as components of road safety campaigns, in the U.K. there appears to be “a growing official opposition to the erection of memorials” (MacConville). Criticism has focused on the dangers (of distraction and obstruction) these structures pose to passing traffic and pedestrians, while others protest their erection on aesthetic grounds and even claim memorials can lower property values (Everett). While many ascertain a sense of hope and purpose in the physical act of creating such shrines (see, for instance, Grider; Davies), they form an uncanny presence along the highway and can provide dangerous psychological territory for the viewer (Brien). Alongside the townships, tourist sites, motels, and petrol stations vying to attract customers, they stain the roadway with the unmistakable sign that a violent death has happened—bringing death, and the dead, to the fore as a component of these journeys, and destabilising prominent cultural narratives of technological progress and safety (Richter, Barach, Ben-Michael, and Berman). Conclusion This investigation has followed Goddu who proposes that a Gothic text “registers its culture’s contradictions” (3) and, in profiling these memorials as “intimately connected to the culture that produces them” (Goddu 3) has proposed memorials as Gothic artefacts that can both disturb and reveal. Roadside memorials are, indeed, so loaded with emotional content that their close contemplation can be traumatising (Brien), yet they are inescapable while navigating the roadway. Part of their power resides in their ability to re-animate those persons killed in these violent in the minds of those viewing these memorials. In this way, these individuals are reincarnated as ghostly presences along the highway, forming channels via which the traveller can not only make human contact with the dead, but also come to recognise and ponder their own sense of mortality. While roadside memorials are thus like civic war memorials in bringing untimely death to the forefront of public view, roadside memorials provide a much more raw expression of the chaotic, anarchic and traumatic moment that separates the world of the living from that of the dead. While traditional memorials—such as those dedicated by, and to, Leichhardt—moreover, pay homage to the vitality of the lives of those they commemorate, roadside memorials not only acknowledge the alarming circumstances of unexpected death but also stand testament to the power of the paradox of the incontrovertibility of sudden death versus our lack of ability to postpone it. In this way, further research into these and other examples of Gothic memorialising practice has much to offer various areas of cultural study in Australia.ReferencesAdams, Brian.
The advancement of exoplanetary research hinges on precise radial velocity (RV) measurements. M dwarf stars, due to their abundance and suitability for hosting rocky planets, are a focal point in this pursuit. The near-infrared spectral domain offers a promising avenue, boasting increased RV information content and a potential reduction in stellar activity. However, the presence of telluric lines presents a substantial challenge, complicating exoplanet detection efforts. Leveraging the SPIRou data reduction system and the line-by-line (LBL) approach to extract RVs, this thesis displays simulations that replicate telluric-induced systematic effects arising from telluric absorption lines. Those simulations are used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the weighted-Principal Component Analysis (wPCA) technique in successfully mitigating and characterizing these telluric-induced systematics in LBL data. Following this, the Wapiti (Weighted-principAl comPonent analysIs reconsTructIon) method is introduced as an example of such a wPCA-based technique, showcasing how it facilitates the detection of new signals in SPIRou data that were previously challenging to disentangle with tellurics and other systematics

This study focuses on the spatial distribution of the M31 satellite system. A new Bayesian technique for determining object distances from the Tip of their Red Giant Branch is developed and used to obtain distance probability distributions for M31and 27 of its satellite galaxies. These distances are then used to calculate the satellite positions in three dimensions. Subsequent analysis of the resulting spatial distribution reveals striking inhomogeneity, with roughly half of the satellites confined to a curiously oriented thin disk. The distribution is also markedly asymmetric, with the majority of satellites lying on the Milky Way side of M31.

This chapter presents an English-language translation of Antoine Zuchet’s correspondence with the Dutch Republic during the Tripolitanian War between America and Tripoli (The First Barbary War). Zuchet was a Representative of the Dutch Republic, originally from Livorno and living in Tripoli during the war. His detailed account serves as a counter-balance to the records from the American Navy which reflect a certain level of nationalist bias. Zuchet’s account as a neutral party displays sympathy for American hostages; remarks on poor, naive, and incoherent choices made by American naval officers and diplomats; and condemns Tripolitanian leader Yusuf Karamanli as a tyrant.

Developing two machine learning classifiers with higher accuracy for classifying income classes for people earning less and a higher salary scale between 50,000. Decision Tree Algorithm (DTA) and Naive Bayes Algorithm (NBA) are the two classifier mechanisms employed. On a dataset of 32516 records, the methods were implemented and tested. Implemented each algorithm through programs and performed ten rounds on both methods to determine distinct scales of income class for who earns lesser and higher salary scale between 50,000. The G-power test is around 80% accurate. The findings of the programming experiment showed that the Decision Tree Algorithm had a mean accuracy of 84.3790 and the Naive Bayes Algorithm had a mean accuracy of 79.3170 for classifying income categories. The variation in accuracy between the two classifiers is statistically significant (p=0.53), which is insignificant when employing the unpaired samples t-test. The primary purpose of this work is to apply a novel technique to modern Machine Learning Classifiers to forecast income class classification. When the Decision Tree Algorithm is compared to the Naive Bayes Algorithm, the results show that the DTA outperforms the NBA.

Chapter 4 continues to chase down myths of meritocracy and the musical mystique across the stages of reality television competitions, which often feature disabled auditionees and their moving tales of overcoming adversity. Musical abilities in general and singing talents in particular are shown to normalize and humanize disabled contestants while once again silencing vital conversations about the exploitation, stigmatization, and corporate politics at work in these seductive narratives. One wrinkle is that critiques of “inspiration porn” are neither easy nor obvious: chronicles of overcoming can emotionally overcome consumers; heartwarming tales about disability can seemingly disable a beholder’s emotional, intellectual, and rhetorical faculties. As we either resist or succumb to the tearfulness induced by lovable stories and gorgeous songs, we must chart tricky routes through the heady skepticism of Scylla and the naive waterworks of Charybdis.

Struggles over the future of Detroit were indelibly shaped by pervasive mythmaking that manifested in cultural events like parades, photographic representation, ruin tourism, and general discourse. If anti-Black dystopian images of the city as an urban jungle and place to fear dominated the media in the second half of the twentieth century, by the twenty-first, Detroit was more commonly conjured as an urban wilderness and new American frontier. This chapter tells the story of the revival of the legend of nain rouge—an impish red dwarf that haunts Detroit—to explore the integral role of terra nullius in the territorialization of whiteness and efforts by residents to counter vacancy discourses by illuminating the importance of geography and geographical imaginaries to social justice struggles.

A network is a simple yet powerful tool for representing a set of relations in the real world. For instance, to represent direct business relations between several people, we can sketch a network where each person is represented by a node and any two people that have done business together are connected by a link. A naive analysis of this network gives a picture of the direct connections between individuals, that is, who has done business, in person, with whom. However, for several network applications it is important to observe more complicated structures, other than the direct connections between the nodes. An example comes from applications in trade networks, where goods are exchanged between several people. In this case, it is important to keep track of the paths that specific goods have traversed in a network; in other words, we want to know the exact sequence of nodes through which a specific item was exchanged. Unfortunately, in some studies of trade networks we may not always know the exact path that certain items followed in the network. This is frequently the case with networks that represent trade relations between sites in an earlier historical period; knowledge of the exact trade paths in such networks has not survived and only fragmentary data is available (Sindbæk 2007, 2013; see in this volume Peeples et al. 2016). The same problem also arises in modern trade networks, when the transactions involved are the result of illegal activities. Such an example is the modern trade network in illicit antiquities. During recent decades, thousands of antiquities were illegally excavated worldwide and exchanged via a global trade network. During the late 1990s and 2000s, the combined efforts of forensic archaeologists and police investigators uncovered a considerable part of the trade network that handled illicit Italian and Greek antiquities in particular (Gill and Chippindale 2006; Gill and Tsirogiannis 2011; Godart et al. 2008). However, a large part of the activities that took place within this network remain unknown and there are some transactions that police investigations were not able to trace.

Biological data classification and analysis are significant for living organs. A biological data classification is an approach that classifies the organs into a particular group based on their features and characteristics. The objective of this paper is to establish a hybrid approach with naive Bayes, apriori algorithm, and KNN classifier that generates optimal classification rules for finding biological pattern matching. The authors create combined association rules by using naïve Bayes and apriori approach with a rough set for next sequence prediction. First, the large DNA sequence is reduced by using k-nearest approach. They apply association rules by using naïve Bayes and apriori approach for the next sequence pattern. The hybrid approach provides more accuracy than single classifier for biological sequence prediction. The optimized hybrid process needs less execution time for rule generation for massive biological data analysis. The results established that the hybrid approach generally outperforms the other association rule generation approach.

Abstract Fausse—na ï ve: an odd turn, but Philip Larkin! devised it as a route into the world of Stevie Smith. All its quirks are right for this truly quirky poet: its feminizing, its Anglo—French, and its paradox. For the first question to ask about the poems of Stevie Smith is, can she possibly be as ingenuous as she sounds? An ingenue is of interest only if you can’t be entirely sure. A few critics raise the question and show that it need not be nailed down. If critics ‘portray her often as a na ï ve writer,’ says Michael Schmidt, ‘this reveals the success with which she projected the mock—innocence of her public image.’ 2 But her writing depends upon its being always in question to what degree her innocence is mock—innocence. She disliked ‘the false simple’ (which she associated with Nazism) as much as she liked ‘the childish delight in a daily use of colour and form, the naïvêtc that has in it something of innocence’. Not that innocence is a simple thing. In the words of ‘The Last Turn of the Screw’: ‘Some children are born innocent, some achieve it’.

Several deep learning architectures have been proposed over the last years to deal with the task of generating a written report given an imaging exam as input. Most works evaluate the generated reports using standard Natural Language Processing (NLP) metrics (e.g. BLEU, ROUGE), reporting significant progress. This article contrast this progress by comparing state of the art (SOTA) models against weak baselines. We show that simple and even naive approaches yield near SOTA performance on most traditional NLP metrics. We conclude that evaluation methods in this task should be further studied towards correctly measuring clinical accuracy, involving physicians to contribute to this end.

ABSTRACT Modeling of fluid flow in rock fractures is a key issue in answering numerous geoengineering problems in the fields of geophysics, reservoir engineering, rock mechanics, to geothermal processes. Although fluid flow in single fractures has been extensively studied in the last 7 decades, fractures commonly seen in fractured reservoir systems intersect each other forming complex geometric structures. Such fracture networks likely affect fluid flow behavior and solute transport. To investigate the impact of geometric characteristics of connected rough-walled fractures with an X junction shape on linear and nonlinear fluid flow behaviors, a sensitivity analysis was carried out by conducting a series of numerical fluid flow simulations on X shape fractures, generated by scanning real rock fractures with distinct roughness (low, medium, and high), intersecting angles, and apertures. The fluid flow through these fractures at different flow rates was simulated by solving Naiver-Stokes equations. The results show that tortures paths and the formation of eddies are more accentuated on the rough fracture than the smoother ones, and the tortuosity of the streamlines is related to the roughness and the geometric characteristics of the intersection. Simulation results of the different models were compared, which show that the intersection significantly impacts the relationship between the hydraulic gradient and the flow. Therefore, the pressure gradient increases with the decrease of the intersection angle especially for low aperture and rough cases. INTRODUCTION Understanding fluid flow through a fractured rock mass has great importance to numerous underground industrial activities, such as geothermal extraction (Zhao, 2016), CO2 storage (Catherine Noiriel et al., 2013), oil and gas exploration (Bo Li et al., 2016), underground oil storage (Qiao et al., 2017; Wang et al., 2015), and hydraulic fracturing (Blanton TL,1982). It is important to measure the impact of roughness to improve the performance of large-scale models since most existing large-scale models still rely heavily on simplified smooth parallel-plate models and related models for natural rock fractures with rough walls (Zimmerman et al., 1992; Zimmerman and Bodvarsson, 1996; Ge 1997; Bodin et al., 2007; Zhao et al., 2013; Wang et al., 2015).
