This thesis explores the presence of Antiquity in the work of André Suarès and questions the meaning of a literary creation which was profoundly marked by the Graeco-Roman legacy. Suarès’s poetry and drama were dominated by the great figures of history and by Greek myths. In the first part of his career, he took them up compulsively, but he soon faced the deadlock of literary superactivity which is an enemy of literary creation. With maturity, he came to master antique inspiration and to invent forms which were more open to modernity. Suarès’s classical culture also bloomed in his critical texts. In his portraits, Suarès celebrated the great figures of the past ; in his chronicles and essays, and in his books of fragmentary thoughts, he questioned his identity through mythological doubles, meditated on love and woman, and on the complex relationships between Antiquity and Modernity ; in his combat texts, he expressed his antigermanism through the concepts of Latinity and Romanity. Classical culture is omnipresent, many-sided and it can’t be ignored. It did inspire and feed the whole work of the author. Driven on by the desire to be the universal genius of Modernity, Suarès sought the formula of the classical creator in the conciliation of the Ancient and Christian heritage. He understood that imitating the Ancients only led to the creation of dead works : life would only spring thanks to the personal and original appropriation of a heritage enriched by the Christian genius. Though he did not really manage to embody the poetical and drama greatness he dreamt of for himself, Suarès has won fame in his tireless commentary of universal creation

Environmental uncertainties, democratic doubts as well as economic and social complexities would challenge the urban planning's mastery, planning and predictability ambitions. Practitioners would increasingly feel inadequacy of urban planning's knowledge to take theses evolutions into account. They therefore start to renew their profession's knowledge by invoking other categories of expertise (disciplinary, relational, cooperative, experiential, etc.) based on subjective relevance criteria. This diversifying, even merging, profession's knowledge capability is called professionality.Nevertheless, theses professionalities are slowed down in achieving their tasks due to urban planning compliance to the Modernity politic plan. Thus, using the knowledge improvement as a collective emancipation, the Modernity only admits logico-formal rationality as a democratic selection criterion. It rejects any political arbitration based on affection, sensitivity, believes, axiology, etc. When Modernity is faced with theses arbitrations, it makes use of mythological patterns of thinking because the timeless, universal, structuring, and familiar impact of the myth allows to easily get a commitment. Environmental crisis revive uncertainties and rejected topics, thus unveiling a urban planning's mythological constellation through Prometheus, Babel and Orpheus myths. The knowledge of urban planning's myths is absolutely necessary for professionalities as they define fora for expression avoiding the Modernity reproductive power

This thesis deals with the work of the Italian poet Sandro Penna and intends to be a critical and chronological reading and analysis. Penna stands apart from the poetical movements of his time; therefore most of his poems and prose narration works are very short and present a timeless view of Life mainly focused on love for young men (from 13 to 16 y.o). From his very first writings this topic is recurrent and obsessional. This is the reason why it is difficult to establish his work as “an autobiographical novel in verse”. Consequently the collections Poesie, Confuso sogno, Peccato di gola. (Poesie al fermo posta) and Un po’ di febbre are analysed in order to relate the uncommon Penna’s personal path and to confirm that love for young men expresses a more universal love for Life. In this “out of time” life an echo of voices of his coevals, such as Saba, Montale, Ungaretti and Pasolini and of his predecessors like Leopardi and Pascoli can be heard. Two aims appear in the poetical and existential quest by Penna: - restoring a harmonious dialog with the Beginning (which is considered as the myth of the original childhood from which memories are immediately absorbed by the spleen of Modernity); - seeing human life as an infinite cycle. From this viewpoint, Platon and Nietzsche’s works, which were well known by Penna, allow us to go further into this questioning through which the poet succeeds in sublimating Real Life

Bender, Mires Batista.
This research is aimed at analyzing Mário Faustino’s poetry, to observe its insert in the modern milieu, mainly through its incorporation of elements from mythic discourse. From the point of view of his reinterpretation of classic myth – gathering of collective thought – the author expresses his feelings about the time he lives in, and succeeds in determining a lyric that assembles intimism and society’s analysis. The present work observes, from that focalization, the treatment which the poet dispenses to his major themes, and still, his search for revitalization in poetry. For this purpose, this work investigates Faustino’s poems and his essays about poetry, pursuing to find in his critical texts, some indication of his creative process. Considering the limits of thematic analysis, this research aims to accomplish an interpretative-descriptive mode, consulting books, magazines, newspapers, academic papers and periodical publications on electronic ambience, as well as, personally interviewing the main interpreter of the poet’s work, Benedito Nunes, and his only biographer, Lilia Silvestre Chaves. The theoretical bases are supported by the studies about modern poetry, from Walter Benjamin, Hugo Friedrich, Theodor Adorno and Alfredo Bosi; the research about poets’ craft, from João Cabral de Melo Neto and T. S. Eliot; the writings about literary myths, from Pierre Brunel e Pierre Grimal; and the studies from Benedito Nunes about Mário Faustino’s poetry. Through the analysis of Mário Faustino’s work, it is observed how the poet takes advantage of his themes to promote the return to the mythological age, when man and nature were perfectly integrated, to harmonize men and modern era. This exam reaches the conclusion that his work presents the junction of poetry and mythological speech, as the poet’s way of recollecting resources to present a reaction against the materialism imposed by modernity.

The objective of this study is to analyze the imaginary manifestations about the language in texts published by Veja magazine between 2000-2012. Nine images about language and two canonical narratives were identified and characterized that cross the publication during this period of 12 years and analyzed how they dialogue with the symbolic and mythic dimension of the news. Covered up all the magazine content, making no distinction between the various journalistic genres of texts analyzed. The corpus has 16 reports, two boxing texts and three interviews which is subject any topic related to human language. In total, has 21 published texts. The selection of materials was qualitative in nature. The research technique used to identify how the imaginary about the language is manifested in Veja was mitocrítica, which aims to infer from cultural manifestations of a society which are the directors myths behind these productions. The approach adopted in this work is phenomenological, describing the symbolic forms of journalistic narratives. This research is descriptive, the document type. It is emphasized as from the General Gilbert Durand Imaginary Theory, as the myths are shown specifically in the texts on the language of Veja magazine as from a dialogue between real and dream, universal and particle, where the imaginary capacity sapiens is filled with historical, social and cultural moments present in the publication, creating their own symbols and mythologies. The theoretical assumption adopted was symbolic work of news (MOTTA, 2006), stating that the texts reported daily by the journalistic media are not just reflections of everyday life, or a representation of the world, but perform an aesthetic experience, factual and diegetic , thus producing the "narrative effect" in the news and press reports. As a result of the study was possible to see how the journalistic narratives about human language published by See, as a holder of symbolic systems that reconstruct reality, not just report facts, events and everyday episodes, but also resort to symbolic meanings, myths and archetypes that are far beyond 'pure and simple information'.
Electronic Thesis or Diss., Université Côte d'Azur, 2022. http://www.theses.fr/2022COAZ2019.
The main object of our research is the poetic work of Giuseppe Conte. His entire poetic production, although differentiated, reveals a continuity in stylistic research and philosophy of existence. Conte's poetry collections are an attempt to express in artistic form his personal vision of literature, the world, society, man and different cultures. Our study explores a poetics that expresses Conte's relationship with poets and writers of the past and present. For Conte, poetry is necessary and fundamental to contemporary civilisation, it is an essential nourishment of the human imagination and soul, it must be understood as fundamental to the aesthetic, moral and economic rebirth of the world. In our study, we first analyse Conte's distance from the neo-avant-garde : he has always considered himself an «outsider» in relation to the artistic and literary movements of the 20th and 21st centuries. His conception of myth and nature as an antidote to the materialism of Western society led him to be one of the founders of «Mythomodernism». We ask why the poet was interested in lost non-European civilizations and examine his reinterpretation of classical myths. We study the role that Conte attributes to poetry in bringing together Western and Eastern cultures ; we also analyse the influence of Ligurian «culture» and landscape on Conte. Finally, we focus on the values of language, in particular the expressive value of metaphor (on which Conte wrote fundamental essays), on poetic form and the analysis of language. The techniques used by Conte allow poetry to become the bearer of a new energy and a renewed work of civilisation

This doctoral thesis provides an analysis of the image of Venice in the works of four writers, either born in Venice or strongly attached to the city, between 1866 and World War One, a time when Venice featured prominently in European literature. After having analysed the limited fame of Venetian writers in a literary context focusing on masterpieces which were mainly the results of their writers’ travels to Venice, this works analyses the Venetian works of Camillo Boito (1836-1914), Enrico Castelnuovo (1839-1915), Giacinto Gallina (1852-1897) and Gerolamo Rovetta (1851-1910) and focuses on the question of minor literature. The first part provides a series of benchmarks. It studies the possibility of a Venetian literary myth and details the economic and political history of Venice at the time. It also focuses on the challenges of minor literature when related to cultural history. The four chapters of the second part analyse the four writers’ works, emphasizing the way they deal with the Venetian stereotypes of the time. The third part draws some conclusions: Boito, Castelnuovo, Rovetta and Gallina distance themselves from the Venetian literary myth and their works show the deep changes that affected the Venetian society at the time. It offers the hypothesis that their works may have remained unknown because they didn’t dwell on the Venetian singularity. At the same time, they enable their readers to discover a modern Venice, an aspect rarely taken into consideration in the studies dedicated to Nineteenth Century literary Venice

The New Age phenomenon, due to its development in Brazilian scenario since the 1970s, is highlighted in media outlets, especially in print journalism. This research aims to determine the construction of journalistic narrative around the everyday life of the New Age, analyzing how these two narratives concerned unite. The corpus of this study consists of the supplement Milenium, from Jornal Correio da Paraíba, and Jornal Ordem do Universo, publication of Brasilia in the 1970s. Such an empirical object will be analyzed according to the theoretical and methodological assumptions of the Sociology of Everyday Life, more precisely the formist method, by the French sociologist Michel Meffesoli. In order to comprehend the shades of New Age and to hypothetically test its presence in the journalistic discourse, five thematic were created and are distributed in each of every section of this research. This research also uses the theoretical contributions that discuss about the news as myth and narrative (storytelling), studies on the myth and the New Age phenomenon under the prism of Sociology and Anthropology, as its insertion in the discussions about post-modernity.

Affected by the death of the revolutionary utopia and the disappointment of the Angolan people, Pepetela’s work questions the Angolan identity: “a Angolanidade”. Through allegory, irony, humour, metonymy, parable and myth, Pepetela denounces the behaviour of the Angolan elite and reinstates certain cultural and ancestral African values long since wiped out by Portuguese colonialism. Pepetela’s work disseminates a strong critique of the post independence Angolan regime while seeking to establish links between tradition and modernity. Our work seeks to demonstrate this fictional reality, whilst giving an analysis of characters who are striving to match their ideology with the reality of the Angolan people. As Aventuras de Ngunga, Muana Puó, A Geração da Utopia, O Desejo de Kianda and Parábola do Cágado Velho are novels which bring into focus certain questions about Angolan identity.Key words: Pepeptela, Angola, revolution, utopia, identity, myth, ideology, tradition, modernity, post-independence

In order to survey Emílio Moura (1902-1971) uses of modern lyric – taking in account his roles as professor, journalist, and Brazilian poet – this thesis focuses the book Itinário poético (2002) which assembles all his verses. When some themes were frequently noticed, we could realize three possible ways of reading and then infer his strategies as a poet. The metalinguistic poems were the firsts to be analyzed because they concern poetic strategies, characterization of poets, poetry, and also poetic language. These characteristics of the metalinguistic poems point out a literary work stretched between the permanence of the mўthos and the rise of the lógos as well as the outcomes of that tension and of the modern versify. Then the steadiness of the representation of the female – better example of the dematerialized images, or even the reframe of the concreteness in Moura‘s literary work – incites the attempt of denude the emiliana women that is built out of both the mythic vis and the platonic metaphysic. That mythic-idealistic tension becomes even more problematic in the poems which announce the fall, the death or the dissolution of the myths, showing up the melancholic character that goes by the majority of Moura‘s writings. The recurrence of a malaise focusing the expression of the self in Itinerário poético, leads us up to notice melancholy in this poet from the XX century.

The objectives of the present work are attempting to define the concept of'' poetic character” in'' Les Fleurs du Mal” and” Le Spleen de Paris” as well as trying to deduce the functions and meanings implied in that concept. A process of conceptualization will be our first part .This part will rely on existing critics on this subject to finally give the appropriate statutes to creatures inhabiting these two works. We suggested to study through specific examples the way the works of Baudelaire treat this concept particularly when it comes to moving from free verse poem to prose poem. Thus, adjacent concepts have emerged in the course of our analysis such as the notion of mythical or allegorical figure. Talking about '' poetic character “is so delicate especially in this generic difference that imposes binding shades of meaning. But the fact is that we were able to grant the status of characters to many creatures whether in ‘Les Fleurs du Mal ‘or in ‘Spleen de Paris’. In fact, they can be defined according to the criteria usually reserved to character i.e., do, say, the psychological dimension… However, this status is not that evident when we notice that in these two works the same creature could sometimes jointly be treated as character and figure. Once this work was done, our task was to study the functions of these'' characters'' and '' figures'' in the context of the overall aesthetics of Baudelaire. Consequently, we could see a process of duplication and dialogism between the poet and his creatures. Tackled as his doubles; these creatures embody the poet’s claims and his avant-gardist aesthetic convictions

Born at the same time as the “30 years of China’s Reform and Opening" political discourse, Rock music in China (Yaogun) at its outset is often understood as an ideological weapon with a somewhat “revolutionary” touch to it against the Communist orthodox principles. This is mainly due to some values known as part of the Rock Myth, such as individual freedom, social equality and democracy. However, since the 1980s, there has been a significant transformation in the People's Republic of China (PRC): the shift to a free-market economy and the opening of the country to outside influence have led to the resurgence of a relevant social and cultural diversity. In the meantime, the new ideologies, technologies and mode of economy unavoidably brought about the commodification of the so-called “Chinese Culture” as part of the modern Chinese “Nation-State” construction, both at the level of the authority’s cultural policy and of the collective social imaginary, including the commodification of the so-called “Chinese Rock” or Yaogun. After one decade of development in the 1990s, generally speaking, China’s Rock or “underground” turned out to stay away from politics. It became hip, professionally organized, commercial and partly moving “overground” (not about revolution, but about everyday life). Similarly to other forms of art and cultural production in contemporary China, Rock also engaged in a complex and creative relationship with the PRC’s revolutionary heritage. From the late 1980s onwards, Yaogun has developed from being a rebelling voice in opposition to the ideology of the Chinese authorities to representing a subject of commodification by different agencies in sharing the same signs of the PRC’s revolutionary heritage. This dissertation attempts to shed some light on the complexities and contradictions involved in the tremendous social and cultural transformations of post-socialist China through the rock music scene. It brings into play the sociology of Rock music, Cultural Studies, together with the production and spreading of the culture and ideology of contemporary Chinese society

The works of Jean Giono (1895-1970) and Miguel Delibes (1920-2010) are respectively set against the backdrop of hinterland Provence and rural Castile, laying the emphasis on the land. This PhD thesis mainly dwells on their novelistic productions, which share numerous recurring themes and figures, despite some aesthetic differences and nuances. After addressing the question of how to characterize these novels – are they novels of the “soil”, “rustic” novels or novels of the “land”? –, this study concentrates on the specific relationships between male characters and their land: peasants at work, all those who live among nature, without forgetting town-dwellers in search of their roots or rural people transplanted to city life, but whose sense of belonging endures. In these works of fiction, the land theme is dealt with in various ways; the emphasis is first placed on the harmonious relationship and close bonds that unite the land with its creatures, whether human or animal. This organic whole is imbued with myths that refer to the origins of mankind. But modernity ruptures this primeval unity, the cycles of its rhythms and the order of its harmonies. Resisting such oppression, the earth rebels, turns against men and threatens them with destruction. From then on, men try to create a restored relationship with the land so that a lost balance might be re-established

The passionate love defined as a banned or impossible love story between two individuals, or by an individual for another, which end badly, will here be covered like a modern identity myth. The love stories will be looked at through the angle of literature (from Tristan et Iseult to Belle du Seigneur), but also through movies and interviews. We will see that this story will be covered under the theme of the birth. Its three themes correspond to the three transition rituals as defined by Van Gennep, and its "characters" are the archetype of the birth. The lived love as an initiatory experience may be what gives a meaning to the life. This study highlights the importance of myths and imaginary in our society and raises questions on today's love speeches

The purpose of this thesis will be to examine closely James Joyce’s Ulysses with respect to François Fénelon’s The Adventures of Telemachus. Joyce considered The Adventures of Telemachus to be a source of inspiration for Ulysses, but little scholarship considers this. Joyce’s fixation on the role of teachers and mentor figures in Stephen’s growth and development, serving alternately as cautionary figures, models or adversaries, owes much to Fénelon’s framework for the growth of Telemachus. Close reading of both Joyce’s and Fénelon’s work will illuminate the significance of education and mentorship in Joyce’s construction of Stephen Dedalus. Leopold Bloom and Stephen’s relationship in Joyce’s Ulysses closely mirrors that of Mentor and Telemachus as seen in Fénelon’s The Adventures of Telemachus. Through these numerous parallels, we will see that mentorship serves as a better model for Bloom and Stephen’s relationship in Ulysses than the more critically prevalent father-son model

The Spanish Avant-Garde Novel has long suffered from an ongoing disrepute because of the dehumanizing prejudice to which it was systematically associated. This work intends to show that far from being neglectful of man, the avant-garde novel is haunted by the expression, representation and writing of the individual subject, considered here as a plural reality - both novelistic and actantial, metaphysical and existential, moral and political – interconnected with the world. To reflect the novelistic expression of the Avant-Garde, with close textual reading, I have decided to combine a thematic approach, dealing with the individual subject facing modernity, with a diachronic perspective that takes account of modulations and variations in time and of the authors’ individual perspectives. The first two parts reassess Image and Myth, long implicated as factors of derealization and dehumanization, to reveal a process of subjectivization of the world through images and humanization of myths by their fertile rewriting. First considered as an « examining subject » through the displaying of images, then as an « examined subject » through myths, man is finally thought as an « acting subject » in the third part of this work which endeavours to report on and assess the last historical developments of the Avant-Garde, at the turning point of rehumanization in the early 1930s

The novels of williams sassine provide a sociological, political, economical and cultural analysis of african societies which appear deeply affected and striken by what the novelist regards as an "historical wreckage". The heroes of these novels are therefore involved in a quest of the past - beyond islamism and christianis - in order to fond again their true identity. Williams sassine suggests that, if they want to return to the magical country of the origins, they have to undergo a series of sufferings, so that most of the main characters are christ'like figures. Biblical influence is evident through saint monsieur baly and wirriyamu, but the writer never forgets he is a son of kankan, his birthplace in the mande, so that elements of african mythological tales are also an important part of his writing

An ancient object that is no longer in use today continues however to survive in our contemporary life. It is presented to us with another function and often with another definition: it is no longer the useful object nor the practical tool that it used to be. In this dissertation, the value of the ancient object is studied in its immaterial and spiritual dimensions. We will thus renew its definition by reflecting on its essence and form from a contemporary viewpoint. The first part of the dissertation presents the concepts around the value of the ancient object in our time from a sociological angle. Next, we propose an approach to the concept of the ancient object as half-human and half-object. Since an ancient object from another era always keeps within itself its life in the period gone by, could this object exist as if it were an animated entity? In the second part, we have sought what characteristics could offer the ancient object this sensation of human life. Perhaps, first of all, the traces of people that it has accumulated visibly and invisibly? The Korean notion of “sonté” allows us to translate and express these visible and invisible traces on the ancient object. In the last part, the ancient object is studied in the field of contemporary art. Contemporary artists see the ancient object as a new object and give it another form and another essence which often is an allegory of human destiny

The title of this thesis refers, explicitly, to the famous Pier Paolo Pasolini’s collection, The ashes of Gramsci. Pascoli’s influence on Pasolini explains only in part the title of the thesis. The ashes of Pascoli refers more specifically to the reception of the poet of San Mauro, together with a special attention to the effects on his work. According to this point of view, the continuity of Pascolian criticism has played a central role: from the end of the nineteenth century until the sixties of the twentieth century. It was at the end of this journey that it became clear to us that the different voices of criticism ended up interacting with each other, composing a network and giving a living image of Pascoli and his work to the reader. Gianfranco Contini and Pier Paolo Pasolini could not have marked a turning point in the reception of Pascoli’s work if he had not received the criticisms from Emilio Cecchi, Arturo Onofri or Renato Serra at the beginning of the 20th century. In their studies the image of Pascoli clearly emerges as poet of modernity, an aspect that Jean-Charles Vegliante still reaffirms today, highlighting as the poetry of Pascoli has continued to act on the national literature, for example on Montale of the Ossi, and beyond. And this in spite of the discredit that the Benedetto Croce's criticisms have cast on the work of the Pascoli to the point of considering him as the “ poeta delle maestrine”.The continuity of the criticism has also allowed us to grasp the importance of the historical context in the literary reception. Alongside the diachronic study, we have developed a work on two of the most emblematic poems of Pascoli – Italy (fifth chapter) and Gog and Magog (eighth chapter) – in order to understand the ideologies underlying the different approaches we have tried to reconstitute. This choice was not insignificant. These two poems, at the heart of the mythopoetic work of Pascoli, have divided critics. Nowadays Pascoli, whose poetic qualities make it possible to go back to Dante and Petrarch, represents one of the major Italian poets that it would be really significant to make him known in France

The angel was never as present as during the modernist era, that is at a time when thereligious figure, in its expression, its form, and even in its substance, its objects, waschallenged by the intense philosophical reflection and by the scientific and technicaldiscoveries stemming from the Enlightenment era. It is this acknowledgement basedon an omnipresence of angels, in nineteenth and twentieth art and literature alike, which led us to ask a simple question – what is the angel a sign of? What does itsymbolize? What meaning may be given its large presence? We have decided, to understand it, to get back to the sources of the angel in order toshed light onto the foundations of that which, quite obviously, establishes itself asone of the most important myths in the present-day imagination. We have alsodecided to show how the mutation from a biblical figure to a profane myth hadmanaged to happen and what were the mechanisms through which thismetamorphosis had taken place; we have also tried to know what was at stake in thisprocess. This study proposes to examine the representations of angels in art and literaturefrom 1850 to 1950 in order to discover how these traditional figures came to becomemodern myths. How can their contemporary representations testify of a newrelationship with the divine ? We'll try to answer this question by studying two majorsymbolics - the inspiring angel and the guardian angel - and by revealing the processin which the angel becomes a personal myth of the individual and especially of thecreator

It is an analysis on the role of intelligentsia in applying an a-critical model of modernity and on the link between intellectuel productions and a political system of a patrimonialistic kind. This part is completed by an analysis on "development as a myth" and the implications of this idea on the bureaucratic- autoritaire project of the state. The second part is an essay about what kind of theoretical adjustments can be made to improve a new sense of modernization which implies taking account of the cultural and political reality (will for a new concept and practice of democracy)

The present work is a research into the elliptical subject of selected poems regarding São Paulo and Minas Gerais, from the book Pau-Brasil, by Oswald de Andrade. The analysis attempts to demonstrate how the poems absence of subjectiveness and acute objectiveness inserts itself into the debate concerning the impersonality in the modern European poetry. It also studies how this procedure is apprehended by the pau-brasil aesthetic, taking into account Brazilian Modernisms search of a national identity. Simultaneously, the study verifies the absent selfs effort to elaborate São Paulos and Minas landscapes in the poems as myths. The subject reveals itself in a nuanced fashion that varies according to the difficulty that involves the myth creation, and the referred complexity refers to the historic moments of both regions in the 1920s: the increasing in the coffee exportation and the decadence of the gold mining.

This thesis focuses on the reception of Béla Bartók’s music and figure in Italy during the first half of the twentieth century. From a musicological standpoint, the analysis of Bartók’s influence on the works of several Italian composers (from Alfredo Casella to Bruno Maderna) invites us to reconsider the evolution of artistic modernism in Italy, as well as the foundations of Bartók’s poetics – which is informed by Hungarian nationalism, the “purity” of peasant folklore, and the utopia of “night music”. Furthermore, the study of the forms of transmission and criticism of one of the canonical composers of the last century raises broader issues concerning cultural history, such as: the continuity between artistic modernism and totalitarianism, the forms and meanings of cultural resistance, the relation between music and diplomacy, and the construction of the antifascist myth of Bartók.This thesis argues that the Bartókian Wave, which emerged in Italy during the early Cold War period, was the result of the fusion between the Bartók myth – i.e. the “musician of freedom” celebrated by the critic Massimo Mila – and the myth of national regeneration: a fusion that had its origins in the soundscape of Fascist dictatorship and the Resistenza
