O presente artigo propõe discutir as marcas do Movimento da Matemática Moderna (MMM) presentes em novas fontes analisadas nos materiais utilizados e/ou confeccionados pela professora Myriam Boardman de Oliveira, que atuou no ensino primário em Minas Gerais entre as décadas de 1060 e de 1980. Fundamentam esta investigação: Prost (1996), Bloch (2002), Choppin (2002), Chervel (1990), Chartier (1990). Na perspectiva de uma pesquisa em história da educação matemática (HEM), optou-se por um aprofundamento em Valente (2007; 2013), Leme da Silva e Valente (2014), Oliveira (2011; 2015). O confronto dos resultados de Mendonça (2016) com os nossos evidenciam o estudo das figuras geométricas com a utilização da teoria de conjuntos, principalmente pela linguagem; precisão da linguagem utilizada e com a utilização, mesmo que de forma introdutória, de conceitos topológicos. A geometria euclidiana é evidenciada com atividades tanto de construção (utilizando compasso, régua, transferidor) e de observação com instrumentos diversos (palitos, barbantes, entre outros). Alguns pontos defendidos pelo ideário do MMM estavam presentes no material da professora, mesmo não sendo tão evidentes.

Despite the recent multiplication of studies in found footage cinema, the fog surrounding the figure of Myriam Borsoutsky remains thick. This article elaborates the rare extant information about her work to retrace an important chapter in the history of found footage cinema in France, in which women have played a major role. In an attempt to delineate a specifically female genealogy in the history of French compilation film, Myriam's work is studied alongside that of Nicole Vedrès, and situated in the cultural context of a net of relationships that includes other women, for instance Denise Tual and Yannick Bellon, as well as such masters of French cinema as Pierre Braunberger, Sacha Guitry, Henri Langlois, Alain Resnais, André Bazin, Chris Marker, Jean-Luc Godard, and Michel Leiris. A detailed analysis of two major works in this genealogy, Paris 1900 (dir. Nicole Vedrès, 1947) and Bullfight (dir. Myriam and Pierre Braunberger, 1951), draws upon Vedrès's own writings and André Bazin's critical notes on the films. The last section addresses the meaning of the neologism neomontage, coined by Bazin in his review of Bullfight to describe Myriam's “diabolical” editing abilities.

Este trabajo se inscribe dentro de una mirada de género sobre la construcción colectiva de la disciplina arqueológica en los últimos 65 años. Para llevar a cabo este objetivo se propuso analizar la historia individual de una de las grandes referentes en la materia en los Andes del Sur, la Dra. Myriam Tarragó, con el fin de articular su polifacética carrera y desempeño académico con contextos sociales y de producción científica específicos, desde fines de la década de 1950 hasta la actualidad. Agente clave y testigo del estado actual de la disciplina, se busca a través de sus recuerdos, la lectura de sus producciones escritas más relevantes y la investigación de sus papeles personales, contextualizar su experiencia académica sin interrupciones, aunque discontinuada en Argentina por varios procesos políticos que se dieron en el país hasta el regreso de la democracia en 1983. Como pionera en diversas esferas del ámbito académico, docencia universitaria y gestión, su itinerario permite evaluar su experiencia de romper el “techo de cristal” y de abrir paso a una nueva generación de profesionales mujeres arqueólogas en momentos convulsionados de la reciente historia argentina.

Configurado en el territorio liminal que se abre entre la piedra y el plano, entre el zigurat Etemenanki y sus representaciones, el mito de Babel se erige como vertebrador de posibles, miríada de prácticas, proyectos y arquitecturas. A partir de la noción de “imagen arquitectónica”, el presente artículo trata de profundizar en las traducciones visuales del mito babélico y su relación con las experiencias urbanas comunitarias desarrolladas durante las décadas de 1960 y 1970. En último término, se tratará de ensayar un acercamiento a la problemática de la traducción visual que enhebre, en su metodología, imagen y experiencia, ahondando en las tareas de apuntalamiento de la imagen emancipatoria anunciadas por Susan Buck-Morss. Built up in the liminal territory between the stone and the blueprint, between the Etemenanki ziggurat and its representations, the myth of Babel stands as a vertebrator of possibilities, myriad of practices, projects and constructions. Starting from the notion of “architectural image”, the present article tries to deepen into the visual translations of the babelic myth and its relation with the communitarian urban experiences developed during the decades of 1960 and 1970. Ultimately, it will try to rehearse an approach to the problematic of the visual translation that enhebre, in its methodology, image and experience, deepening in the tasks of propping up the emancipatory image announced by Susan Buck-Morss.

Resumo Estudos sobre desigualdade na Ciência Econômica formam um campo amplo e consolidado, e são majoritariamente direcionados às desigualdades econômicas. Nas primeiras duas décadas do século XXI, movimentos sociais em diversos países fizeram reacender o debate, de tal forma que eminentes economistas passaram a incorporar questões sociais às suas análises sobre as desigualdades econômicas. O objetivo deste artigo é demonstrar que esta forma multidisciplinar de analisar as desigualdades foi empregada de forma pioneira por Gunnar Myrdal ainda na década de 1960, período em que os estudos sobre o tema eram muito correlacionados a métricas de renda e riqueza. A partir deste resgate, o artigo argumenta que a ampla gama de desigualdades sociais não surge apenas como uma consequência da distribuição desigual de renda. Por isso, sugere que o debate sobre a redução das desigualdades deve incorporar análises mais amplas tais como aquelas sugeridas por Myrdal. O artigo conclui que a efetiva redução das desigualdades sociais ocorre por meio da execução de profundas e lentas reformas estruturais.

Objective: Literature started to point out essential parameters involving reciprocating instruments through clinical and laboratory essays. Looking into apical debris extrusion, incidence of instrument breakage, canal centering ability, apical zipping, a myriad of information has become available. The aim of this review is to revisit the literature and compare reciprocal and continuous rotation techniques.Methods: A review of current literature may collect recent findings.Conclusion: Reciprocating systems are similar in some aspects in comparison to rotational systems, with regards to cleaning ability, centered preparations, cleaning ability, reduction of Enterococcus faecalis and dentine defects. On the other hand, being single use and enhanced resistance to fatigue, together with novel methods to treat the alloy may lead to the thought that reciprocal systems are an excellent aid to root canal preparation. However, more needs to be understood about this new era of instruments to verify, long term and especially in vivo, the success and failure when these instruments are used.

Si les deux extrémités du continuum chronologique de la pratique photographique indienne – la période 1840-1910 d’une part, la fin du xxe siècle d’autre part – ont fait l’objet de recherches, on ignore encore comment, de manière concrète et détaillée, le médium, initialement aux mains des élites britannique et indienne, est devenu un phénomène de grande ampleur. À partir de l’étude croisée de diverses sources (visuelles, orales, écrites) rassemblées à la faveur d’une enquête de terrain de plusieurs mois, dont la logique méthodologique fait l’objet d’une présentation circonstanciée, cet article apporte un éclairage sur l’histoire de la photographie dans un espace géographique encore peu étudié, le sud de l’Inde. Avec Coimbatore – grand centre industriel – comme point focal, il dresse un panorama chronologique des évolutions géographiques et sociales de la pratique photographique au niveau micro. Construit autour de trois périodes clés, l’article propose ainsi une lecture spatialisée – focalisée sur la répartition géographique des studios, et de la consommation photographique – et socialisée – relative à l’évolution des profils des photographes et des clients – du processus de démocratisation de l’accès à la photographie à Coimbatore.

Abstract Lake Texcoco, located on the eastern edge of Mexico City, had dried significantly during the nineteenth century, a process furthered by the Great Drainage Canal, completed in 1900. Although city boosters praised the canal for having eliminated Texcoco’s floods, dust storms arising from the briny lands began to torment the city. Intermittently from 1912 to 1950, the Mexican government carried out an ambitious drainage and fertilization project to curtail the dust storms and create an agricultural oasis. The government’s vision of a verdant and productive Texcoco bed generated widespread disputes between the state and local campesinos as well as among the urban elite. The postrevolutionary agrarian reform eventually enabled campesinos to negotiate with land reclamation authorities and turn what had been a project exclusive of the local poor into an example of agrarian justice. As engineers struggled to fertilize the briny lands at a reasonable cost, many urban planners proposed lake conservation and afforestation over drainage and farming to secure urban prosperity. But the agricultural vision remained dominant. In the 1950s and ’60s, however, urbanization, the political shift away from campesino production, and the prohibitive costs of farming the reclaimed land opened the door for a conservationist plan to resolve the incessant Texcoco problem. The study of Texcoco reclamation requires the integration of rural and urban history, two fields rarely in dialogue. Intraelite debates over the role of nature in urban growth and campesino protest shaped the evolution of this ambitious public works project. State-led development was therefore not imposed from above but negotiated, contested, and transformed from below by myriad social groups residing in the city and the countryside.

Cet article porte sur l’amitié et la relation de travail du metteur en scène Stephen Katz et de la scénographe Mary Kerr, qui ont créé ensemble neuf productions novatrices entre 1970 et 1976. Une brève entrée en matière présente les trajectoires professionnelles de Katz et Kerr, deux célèbres artistes de théâtre au Canada, tout en situant Katz dans le contexte d’artistes dont la vie a été écourtée par le SIDA. Ce préambule est suivi d’un entretien avec Kerr sur les aspects uniques de la synergie créative qu’elle partageait avec Katz, de même que les spécificités d’une collaboration qui remonte à l’époque où les deux artistes étudiaient à l’University of Toronto. Kerr parle de la première expérience professionnelle de l’équipe au Tarragon Theatre de Toronto, de même que des expériences vécues plus tard dans des théâtres à plus grande échelle comme le Vancouver Playhouse et le festival Shaw. Analysts of American politics since Tocqueville have seen the nation as a paradigmatic “liberal democratic” society, shaped most by the comparatively free and equal conditions and the Enlightenment ideals said to have prevailed at its founding. These accounts must be severely revised to recognize the inegalitarian ideologies and institutions of ascriptive hierarchy that defined the political status of racial and ethnic minorities and women through most of U.S. history. A study of the period 1870–1920 illustrates that American political culture is better understood as the often conflictual and contradictory product of multiple political traditions, than as the expression of hegemonic liberal or democratic political traditions.

AbstractUsing the case study of Montpellier, this article explores the relationship between local political actors and postcolonial minorities since the end of the Algerian War – particularly, the city's pied-noir, harki, Moroccan and Jewish populations. It examines the discourses used to secure the electoral allegiances of these groups and the myriad ways in which they laid claim to certain civic and political spaces. It employs diverse oral, archival and audio-visual sources to demonstrate how postcolonial minorities have gained important concessions from local authorities and how identity politics has developed under the Fifth Republic, despite France's strong republican tradition.

The Argentinean pianist Miguel Angel Estrella was arrested in Montevideo during Operation Condor in December 1977. Accused of being a member of the Montoneros, a Peronist guerilla movement, he was tortured and held incommunicado before being transferred to Libertad, where political prisoners from Uruguay were assembled. Thanks to an intensive and international solidarity campaign, launched by his friends in Paris and led by classical music celebrities as well as diplomats, human rights activists, and a myriad of anonymous music-lovers, Estrella was released and expelled to France in February 1980. Drawing on archival materials from the Estrella support committee, diplomatic files, interviews, and recently declassified documents from the Uruguayan military court, this article retraces the construction of an exceptional “cause,” shedding new light on the relations between music and diplomacy during the Cold War. It examines the musician’s experience in prison, where he painfully managed to play Beethoven sonatas on a silent piano, as if mirroring the media’s portrayal of him as a Beethovian hero, a sort of modern Florestan. It also analyzes the connections between ethics and aesthetics, and the role of emotions in international political mobilizations.

Three new species, Macropsella recta, Toropsis minuspina and Varicopsella apecurvata spp. nov. are described and illustrated from Australia. Leafhoppers of the subfamily Macropsinae are found abundantly in the Holarctic, Oriental and Australian regions (Linnavuori, 1978) and have been collected from around the world, except for Antarctica, Oceania and South America (Hamilton, 1980). Both Hamilton (1980) and Evans (1966) suggested that there were likely a myriad of uncollected and undescribed species in Australia alone and Evans (1971) commented that the Macropsinae are possibly more abundant in Australia than anywhere else in the world. Day and Fletcher (1994) listed 45 macropsine species in eight genera and mentioned that the Australian fauna needs “a thorough examination to establish the generic affinities of the species…”. In her unpublished doctoral dissertation, Semeraro (2014) recently completed a revision and phylogeny of the Australian fauna, documenting an additional 50 undescribed species and proposing changes to the generic classification, but this work has not yet been published. The new Australian species described herein, representing three genera, one not previously recorded in Australia, were not included in Semeraro’s (2014) dissertation.Study of samples recently collected from Australia revealed the presence of 3 new species, representing the genera Macropsella Hamilton, Toropsis Hamilton and Varicopsella Hamilton.Macropsella was established by Hamilton (1980) with Macropsis saidora Evans, 1971 as the type species. Five Macropsis species describeded by Evans (1971), one Macropsis species described by Kirkaldy (1907) and new species Macropsella complicata Hamilton (1980) were previously included in this genus. The seven species of this genus are known only from New Guinea and Northern Australia. Members of this genus can be distinguished by their usually white spotted tegminal veins, tapered male pygofer and laterally directed short ventral pygofer spines.Toropsis was established by Hamilton (1980) with Oncopsis balli Kirkaldy, 1907 as the type species. Six Oncopsis species (Evans, 1935, 1941) and three Macropsis species (Evans, 1971; Metcalf, 1966) were transferred to this genus by Hamilton (1980). So far, ten species recorded in this genus, and all of these species are recorded only from Australia. Toropsis can be distinguished by the wide face, small and flat front, inflated pronotum, unarmed male pygofer and relatively small dorsal connectives.Varicopsella was established by Hamilton (1980) for seven species from the Oriental region, with Macropsis breakeyi Merino, 1936 as its type species. More recently, Li et al. (2014) added a new species and subgenus Varicopsella (Multispinulosa) hamiltoni from China, but this species appears to be incorrectly placed in Varicopsella. Yang et al. (2016) added V. odontoida from Thailand. This genus can be distinguished by the depressed head, fused lora and frontoclypeus, and the two-jointed dorsal connective of the male.

By mid-1940 Bartók had decided to live in the United States. For how long and under what conditions, he did not really know. But, from his short tour of April and May 1940, he had come to believe that the prospects for his performing, compositional and ethnomusicological work werebrighter in New York than in Hungary, where a Nazi take-over seemed only a matter of time. The Bartóks' departure from their homeland was an unhappy affair, not just because of the myriad hassles of arranging visas and boxing up a lifetime's work, but also because of a lastminute quarrel with Kodály over unexpected directions which Bartók had taken in their joint project on Hungarian folk music. The two would, in fact, never again directly communicate.

ArgumentThis article argues that in order to discern the place of science in the epistemology of Chinese common readers, it is critical to look beyond the coastal enclaves where foreign missionaries and experts interacted with Chinese scholars and officials, beyond the translated treatises they produced, and even beyond the various forms of new media that attempted to more widely disseminate the principles of Western science. Instead, it asserts the need to engage a different register of materials that were less directly tied to foreign expertise, more directly in line with pre-existing lineages of printed materials, and at the same time, integral to early-twentieth-century Chinese circuits of information. The article focuses explicitly on one print phenomena that has been completely overlooked in the scholarship to date, the expansion and revitalization of the genre of texts known aswanbao quanshu萬寶全書 (comprehensive compendia of myriad treasures) in the late Qing (1890-1911) and early Republic (1912-1930).

Abstract The coauthors recount their observations and experiences in addressing the Farm Crisis throughout the 1980s. Their experiences highlight the challenges of rapid socioeconomic changes, the growing concentration of economic power, and the restructuring of the farm economy as Iowa grappled with the Farm Crisis that engulfed farmers and soon engulfed the entire state. Through the lenses of a community organizer and an academic rural sociologist, the authors provide insights into the myriad contradictions and opposing forces that contributed to the difficult and prolonged financial crisis that accelerated the trends of further consolidation and industrialization of farming and the food system. Much like the Great Depression of the 1930s, the landscape of rural Iowa bears the scars of the 1980s Farm Crisis that has forever changed the economy and culture of rural, farm-dependent communities.

Mobile devices can instantly create and distribute a digital self-portrait, or ‘selfie’ across a myriad of social networks. The word ‘selfie’ summarises a particular kind of cultural and photographic practice that is motivated by a combination of the agency and aspirational biases of the selfie producer and where they prefer to share on social networks. With a specific focus on gendered selfie production, this paper aims to explore the relevant theories for gender identity within online communities in which selfies are shared. From a theoretical starting point, firstly this paper employs the poststructuralist theories (Deleuze and Guattari, 1980) as interpretative filters for a decisive understanding of the inner “rhizome” of an individual’s ideal of “becoming”. This paper argues that the embodied human subject is transformed by self-exploration with the production and distribution of their selfies.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture last delineated the regional boundary of the Corn Belt in 1950. Mixed-grain and livestock farming practices have today transitioned to annually rotating corn and soybeans, which has altered the geographic bounds of this region. To illustrate the changing geography of the Corn Belt, ArcGIS geoprocessing and spatial analysis tools, along with a simple, summative assessment using Census of Agriculture data, were used to map how the region's boundary has changed as myriad internal and external driving forces influence where farmers grow corn. Since 1950 the region's core has remained spatially stable as corn production has intensified, while the region's periphery has shifted to the northwest. The methods used to create this contemporary Corn Belt region illustrate how a regional boundary and internal regional intensities can be used to map agricultural land use change.

Place branding is seriously studied in various academic disciplines. Its impact on strategic development plays a vital role in processes of sustainable urban transformation. Place branding originated in tourism management and over time its research focus spilled over and evolved in environmental science, urban studies and public administration. Scholars and policy makers are currently faced with a myriad of concepts in place branding research, which show considerable overlap but should be carefully distinguished from each other. To increase our understanding of this body of research, this article observes a strong pattern of the concepts in use, in their references to location types (i.e., urban, city, destination, place) and broadcasting activities (branding, marketing, promotion). It builds on this observation by collecting studies from the Scopus database by location type and broadcasting activities (LT–BA) reference pairs and systematically analysing and reviewing these from 1980 to 2018. A total of 2665 articles and reviews were identified and analysed based on (1) occurrences per reference pair, (2) co-occurrences per reference pair, and (3) co-occurrences for each reference pair with other concepts. On that basis, the origin and evolution of the research field including multiple reference pairs in use is explored and described.

The early years of state television in Italy, which began transmission in 1954, have usually been viewed as crucial to the spread of mass culture through Italian society. In addition, these developments have essentially been seen in negative terms by historians and sociologists. This article explores these early years in detail for one, key, urban setting: Milan. Through an examination of the myriad and often hidden effects of television, the research attempts to draw out the contradictory and complicated impact of TV and its relationship with other media, the neighbourhood, the family, the home and daily life. The article also looks at the impact of one important quiz show in the 1950s and concludes with some reflections on the power of the media in the city in the 1990s.

RESUMO: O bicudo-do-algodoeiro (Anthonomus grandis Boheman) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) é um dos principais fatores limitantes para a expansão da cultura do algodão. Ele apresenta diferentes aspectos biológicos e comportamentais que garantem seu sucesso na exploração do agroecossistema algodoeiro. O objetivo deste trabalho foi identificar os recursos alimentares utilizados pelo bicudo na safra e entressafra de cultivos de algodão localizados nos municípios de Iuiu e Correntina (BA) e em ambientes de Caatinga e Cerrado, contíguos aos algodoais, respectivamente. As coletas dos adultos foram realizadas no período de fevereiro a setembro/2013 por meio de armadilhas com feromônio. As amostras foram processadas para identificação dos tipos polínicos encontrados no aparelho digestivo dos insetos. Os resultados indicaram que a praga explora 22 famílias botânicas como fonte de alimento, das quais 16 na Caatinga e 5 no Cerrado. Nos bicudos coletados em algodão foram encontrados 8 gêneros botânicos em Iuiu e 10 em Correntina, sendo apenas três coincidentes aos dois cultivos (Angelonia, Mimosa e Myrcia sp.1). Grãos de Pólen de 26 gêneros de plantas foram identificados para Caatinga e 6 para o Cerrado, ocorrendo três gêneros comuns às duas áreas (Myrcia sp.2, Eucalyptus e Mimosa). O bicudo explora fontes alternativas de alimento nas principais regiões produtoras de algodão da Bahia, com destaque para a Caatinga, que apresenta maior quantidade de famílias e gêneros botânicos utilizados pela praga.

Unlike most nineteenth-century makers of traditional musical instruments, who did not aim at mass markets, German harmonica manufacturers were able to develop a large and worldwide market for their product. Located in regions outside Germany's industrial core districts, they epitomized successful specialty production. From the beginning, they relied on exports, especially to North America, a trade that was initially assisted by transatlantic emigrants who helped test market potential and tap into commercial networks. Hohner, the most successful harmonica manufacturer, created a well-known brand and extensively applied strategies of market segmentation and product differentiation from the 1890s onward, in part to satisfy customers' demand for myriad product variations. Sales channels and marketing methods also were far from homogeneous, being most effective when adapted to local conditions and cultures. For harmonica makers, diversity rather than uniformity was the key to global marketing success.

On the night of December 1,1908, the city of Vienna was lit up like a giant birthday cake in celebration of the sixtieth anniversary of the reign of Emperor Francis Joseph I. This final night of the monarch's diamondjubilee was the culmination of an entire season of ceremonial occasionsranging from visits to Vienna by the German emperor William II to a seemingly endless series of fětes—everything from concerts by children's choirs to the most magnificent royal balls Vienna could muster. The streets of the imperial capital were filled with the myriad languages of the empire asmore than one million citizens crowded the Ringstraßre and its many side streets and alleys hoping for a glimpse of their emperor-king. That evening the streets of Prague were filled with thousands of angry Czechs, whose moodwas much different from that of the crowd in Vienna. In contrast to the Viennese festival of light, the Czech demonstrators were extinguishing the street lanterns of Prague, hoping that darkness would decrease the likelihood that they would be arrested. According to the Neue Freie Presse, the Old Town(staré město/Altstadt) district of Prague was experiencing a “schrecktlichstag.”

Obstructive sleep apnea is an under recognized and under diagnosed medical condition, with a myriad of negative consequences on patients health and society as a whole. The most acting reason behind Obstructive sleep apnea given as in literature is due to recurrent episodes of upper airway (UA) collapse during sleep. Episodes may last 10 seconds or longer and commonly last 30 seconds or longer. From the mid-1990s to the present, we have seen an explosion of basic, clinical, and population research directed toward the prevalence, causes, consequences, and treatment of this long-standing, although only recently appreciated, problem. Sleep apnea has attracted a myriad of researchers from diverse disciplines and clinical subspecialties. At the same time, sleep apnea as a serious, undefined clinical problem has also given birth to many sleep medicine clinics throughout the western world. Finally, given the relatively high prevalence of this sleep-specific problem with potential carryover to daytime pathology, sleep apnea has provided great impetus to the growth of sleep medicine as a clinical and research specialty. Dentists have been involved in the collaborative evaluation and treatment of patients with OSA using oral appliances from 1980. Importantly, dentists play a crucial role in evaluating patients with OSA for the suitability of appliance therapy, choosing and adjusting the appliance and assessing the patient for adverse effects. To accomplish holistic treatment approach it is essential that dentists and the sleep medicine physician should work collaboratively. When this occurs, patients will have the best opportunity for the effective treatment of their OSA.

During the German occupation of the Netherlands between 1940 and 1945, around 75% of the country’s Jewish population were deported and killed, primarily in the extermination camps of Auschwitz and Sobibor. Much attention has been paid to the factors which explain this, but this article questions how any Jews managed to survive in an increasingly hostile environment where there were no ‘favorable factors’ to aid them. The analysis centers on the attitudes of the Jews towards acting illegally, their relationships with the rest of Dutch society, and the possible opportunities for escape and hiding. From the 1950’s onward, the myriad qualities of all plastic objects were praised without a second thought. This enthusiasm significantly delayed the awareness of their enormous impact and it took almost half a century to consider these objects a part of post-war culture. This essay aims to sketch the history of the appreciation of the relevance of plastics in the museum world, specifically as a part of design heritage, seen from the viewpoint of the collector and the conservator-restorer. The case of the Design Museum Brussels, established in 2015, shows how a collaborative and interdisciplinary approach on conservation can be developed to the benefit of our plastics heritage.

AbstractThe first industrial hospital in America opened in 1840 in Lowell, Massachusetts. The Lowell Corporation Hospital was sponsored by the town’s textile employers for ninety years. This article analyses the contextual complications surrounding the employers’ sustained funding of the hospital. Motivations for sustained sponsorship included paternalism, clinical excellence, business custom, the labour situation in Lowell, civic duty and the political advantages of paternalism. By analysing the changing local context of the hospital, this article argues that a broader, more integrated approach to healthcare histories and institution histories is needed if we are to fully understand the myriad of healthcare providers and their local and national importance.

This paper seeks to elucidate the socio-cultural and economic benefits of higher education in refugee contexts. NGO and UNHCR initiatives in Dadaab and Kakuma camps are used as a reference point for discussing the challenges, best practices, and potential of higher and adult learning in contexts of protracted exile. This small-scale, qualitative study seeks to understand what opportunities for higher education exist for those living in Kenyan refugee camps, and do existing opportunities yield “social benefits” beyond those accrued by the refugees themselves? Drawing upon interviews with practitioners, observation in schools and learning centres, and data from refugee-service providers, our findings are primarily descriptive in nature and explore the myriad ways in which opportunities for higher learning can strengthen refugee communities in countries of asylum. We contend that although Kenya’s encampment policies limit the potential economic and social benefits of refugee education on a national level, opportunities for refugees to pursue higher education are still immensely valuable in that they bolster refugee service provision in the camps and provide refugees with the skills and knowledge needed to increase the effectiveness of durable solutions at both an individual and societal level, be they repatriation, local integration, or third-country resettlement.

Scholarly studies of the Mexican revolutionary period seldom have approached the subject from the standpoint of how this momentous struggle was actually waged by its combatants. While considerable investigation has rendered valuable insights into leading personalities and movements of the time, no comparable effort has been made to unravel the myriad military complexities and paradoxes of one of the major wars waged on the North American continent.A case in point concerns the foreign soldiers who fought side by side with Mexican troops in the rebel armies. Such military personnel are commonly referred to in modern-day parlance as mercenaries, a term indicating “paid soldiers in the service of a foreign country.” However, not all foreigners who served in the Revolution were professional soldiers for hire, nor did all have previous military experience. Such words and phrases as soldiers of fortune or adventurers, in vogue during the period, more clearly define the status of these combatants as “men fighting for pay or love of adventure under the flag of any country.” Be that as it may, all of the terms given above are basically synonymous and can be used interchangeably to refer to the foreign volunteers who joined the various armed factions contending for supremacy in Mexico.

For over a millennium before the 20th century, the Korean state had maintained a system of household registration, or hojok. In the Choson dynasty (1392-1910), these registers, through their specification of each household head's status either as a tax-paying commoner or tax-exempt aristocrat or low-born, reinforced the hereditary status delineation of each locality and in turn determined everything from tax and service obligations to the courtesies and behaviors of social interaction. Within the span of a few years at the turn of the 20th century, however, this stalwart institution of household registration, which proved so central to both the strengths and problems of the Choson government, was thoroughly reorganized, revealing the myriad facets of the state's changing relationship with the populace.

A myriad of Ngugi’s readers may presuppose that the literary career of this celebrated African writer began at the University. Albeit it was at Makerere that he triumphantly wrote and subsequently published his first and second novels, Weep Not Child and The River Between for which reason he reveals in his own words that “I started writing in 1960. I was then a student at Makerere University College” (Homecoming: 47), and for Lindfords, Ngugi’s literary career begun specifically “towards the end of 1960” (23), evidences corroborate that Ngugi has started his literary writing since at the secondary school: the Alliance High School. The motive behind this article is to unveil that Ngugi’s literary writing career history is marvellous and distinctive. Although famous African writers the likes of late Achebe have written earlier than him, he is such a rare prolific writer, who has written at different places, at different periods, for different motives, with varying degrees of inspirations, all of which demonstrate an unprecedented, literary dynamism in his entire literary writing career.

In 1920 the Belarusian Soviet Socialist Republic emerged upon the ruins of German and Polish occupation. It replaced the short-lived Belarusian Democratic Republic as the embodiment of national statehood. The ensuing decade came to be an important but ambiguous period in Belarusian history. New state institutions such as the Commissariat of Public Enlightenment, the Institute of Belarusian Culture, and the Belarusian State University carried out unprecedented “nation-building” policies designed to reverse the effects of tsarist Russification and foster the development of Belarusian national culture. Parodoxically, many of the same institutions also implemented various aspects of “Sovietization.” A myriad of measures under the label “socialist construction” served to integrate ever more closely Belarus into the Soviet Union.

Trueperella pyogenes is an opportunistic pathogen, most commonly affecting ruminants and pigs. A female free-ranging gray brocket deer (Mazama gouazoubira) had an abscess in the masseter muscle associated with an osteolysis and osteomyelitis in the adjacent right mandibule, with a fistulous tract to the orbit and through the optic foramen into the skull, causing a suppurative meningitis. Histologically, the abscess was characterized by a neutrophilic and histiocytic inflammatory infiltrate with myriad of Gram-positive rod-shaped bacteria, and a focally extensive suppurative and histiocytic leptomeningitis of the ventral portions of the brain. Aerobic microbiologic culture, MALDI-ToF, and PCR identified T. pyogenes.

The Fronteira Oeste Rift located in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil, covers an area of 15,000 km2 and constitutes both a rhombohedral structural province and a paleohot spring field. These major features can be observed during a two-day field trip. A 4x4 vehicle is recommended. The weather is cold (freezing), humid climate during winter and hot (35 °C), varying from humid to dry during summer-. Excellent access to the outcrops is possible through paved and unpaved roads. Outcrops described in this field guide are stratigraphically located above the Botucatu Formation (paleoerg) and below the Serra Geral Group (volcanics) of the Paraná Basin. Sandstones of the Botucatu Formation were quickly filled by rainwater and after covered by a basalt (Mata Olho Flow) and a quartz andesite (Catalán Flow), thus originating the Guarani Paleoaquifer. The third Cordillera Flow (basaltic andesite) occurs in places, eventually covered by the Muralha Flow (basaltic andesite). Two additional basaltic andesites (UR13 and Coxilha Flows) were described in a drill hole. Aquifer heating by raised geothermal gradient led to pre-compaction cementation of sandstones by iron-rich minerals. Eolian quartz-rich sediments were deformed and hydrothermally altered in the composite paleodunes, showing thousands of circular, elliptical and curvilinear structures. Compaction caused upward motion of hot water + liquefied sand leading to the formation of many sand injectites and extrudites. Simultaneous doming of overlying rocks caused both large- and small-scale rhombi in sandstones and volcanic rocks. Post-compaction silicification occurred together with the formation of a myriad of 0.1-1.0 m-large hydrothermal vents at the surface of the paleoerg and also the first three lava flows. Features resulting from these processes can be visited, as described in this Geological Field Guide. A shorter geotrail is also described.

RESUMO A dengue está entre as doenças virais de propagação vetorial mais importante no mundo, causando sérios impactos de morbidade e mortalidade. Desta forma, o presente trabalho teve como objetivo analisar a composição química e a toxicidade do óleo essencial de Myrcia sylvatica (G. Mey) D.C. frente Aedes aegypti e Artemia salina. Folhas de M. sylvatica foram coletadas no Parque Nacional da Chapada das Mesas, no município de Carolina (MA) no mês de fevereiro de 2012. O óleo foi obtido por hidrodestilação e sua composição química foi determinada por cromatografia gasosa acoplada à espectrometria de massa (CG/EM). O bioensaio frente Artemia salina e às larvas de 3° estádio de Aedes aegypti foram realizados em diferentes concentrações. Os dados de mortalidade foram avaliados por regressão linear para determinar os valores de CL50. Obteve-se 0,5% de rendimento, sendo o (E)-cariofileno o constituinte majoritário. O óleo essencial apresentou uma CL50 = 79,44 µg/mL frente A. salina, sendo considerado altamente tóxico. No entanto, este óleo não demonstrou efeito sobre as larvas de A. aegypti. Considerando que o teste de Artemia salina tem correlação com atividades biológicas de grande interesse terapêutico como antitumoral, o óleo essencial das folhas de M. sylvatica demonstrou potencial para desenvolvimento de produtos farmacêuticos.

It is difficult to exaggerate the level of critical praise that American solo performer Ruth Draper received during her long career, which stretched from 1920 until her death in 1956. As one critic notes: “Very few people have ever talked very coherently about Ruth Draper. There are no standards by which to gauge her. The magic she conveys is as inexplicable as air or light or love.” Indeed, after reading the myriad panegyrics that collected during her career, words like “magic,” “genius,” “powerful,” and “consummate” begin to lose their meaning. Her critics were so adoring that by 1956, one admitted, “London has long ago worn its most extravagant adjectives, clichés, and superlatives to tatters in its attempt to cope with her achievement.”

A growing segment of society is concerned about a myriad of health and environmental issues related to the use of pesticides and other agricultural chemicals. Despite the leveling-off of agricultural chemical use in the 1980s, chemical use in agriculture has come to be seen as a two-edged sword. On the positive side, agricultural chemicals have become the engine for world-wide productivity gains. These chemicals have contributed to increased yields per acre and have reduced waste in storage and distribution. On the negative side, agricultural chemicals are perceived by many to present risks to the safety of the food we eat, to the quality of our drinking water, to the wildlife population, to applicators and to people who inadvertently come into point contact with them.

A senile female nocturnal curassow (Nothocrax urumutum) kept under human care was found dead. Grossly, the lungs were congested and had a nodule with 2.0 cm in diameter adhered to the left lung. Histologically, there were multifocal to coalescent areas of necrosis characterized by deposition of amorphous and eosinophilic material with large amount of cellular debris, surrounded by numerous epithelioid macrophages, multinucleated Langhans giant cells, occasional lymphocytes and plasma cells. Ziehl-Neelsen stained sections demonstrated myriad of intralesional alcohol-acid resistant bacilli (BAAR). DNA extracted from lung samples were evaluated by nested polymerase chain reaction resulting in mycobacterial DNA identification. This is the first reported case of mycobacteriosis in a nocturnal curassow.

Abstract Isoceroptene, a polyphenol isolated in trace amount from the farinose frond exudate of Pityrogramma triangularis, is shown by spectroscopic means to possess the structure of one of the two possible “flavanone” isomers formed by ring closure of the “chalcone” ceroptene. The tautomeric structures best representing ceroptene and a related dihydrochalcone from Myrica gale are defined by 1H-NMR spectroscopy.

A partir da análise da obra O alegre canto da perdiz (2008), da escritora Paulina Chiziane, este artigo propõe uma reflexão acerca de algumas das possibilidades identitárias da mulher moçambicana, tendo em vista a dominação masculina. A família de Serafina, Delfina e Maria das Dores é o eixo em torno do qual se constrói o universo diegético. A obra é conduzida, pois, por mãos femininas, quer na própria urdidura do texto, quer nas ações do enredo, quer no papel de progenitora de uma geração que se pretende descolonial.

Em um jogo entre eu-autor e eu-personagem, os diários de escritores muitas vezes encontram-se em um entrelugar na escrita literária. Neste trabalho, enfatizo a construção da ficção dentro do discurso confessional do diário, na transformação da página em branco em laboratório da escrita. Para tanto, pauto-me em pesquisas acerca do gênero, desenvolvida por autores tais como Blanchot (1959), Lejeune (1975), Barthes (1979) e Ávila (2016), em diálogo com alguns diários de escritores.
