The paper deals with the theoretical and empirical investigation of socio-economic aspects of accessibility to museums and galleries by removing various barriers. While there are certain costs associated with barrier removal, making museum and galleries accessible also leads to an increase in visitor numbers, resulting in higher incomes. Thus, accessibility in turn, impacts both economy and society. The aim is to examine and identify the socio-economic aspects associated with making museums and galleries accessible to all and to compare the approach to this process in Slovakia and abroad. The study analyses primary data collected through a combination of questionnaire survey and interviews. The research sample consists of Slovak museums and galleries (n=52) and associations from 6 European countries. Results reveal that the main problem lies in the elimination of architectural barriers, which is caused by the historical nature of buildings and the financial difficulty associated with technical modifications. The lack of financial resources is as well considered to be a fundamental hindrance to the process of removing barriers. However, making culture accessible to people with disabilities is not driven by internal motivation, but rather by an obligation arising from the law. The findings also underscore that representatives from museums, galleries, and associations acknowledge that while the immediate economic benefits may not be readily apparent, the long-term impact on the institution's attractiveness and visitor experience and happiness is profound. Moreover, implemented modifications are beneficial to a significantly broader audience, which expands the potential target group and may contribute to employment.

The purpose of this article is to analyze the current state of museums in Spain through the prism of the dynamic development of innovative technologies in society. The article reveals the tourist preference for Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS), which is a single digital travel platform that integrates all the necessary information. An important contribution to sustainable urban mobility is public transport, shared bike, shared e-moped, and shared car. These components, coupled with digital services offering route information to museums, information about museums, booking and purchasing tickets to museum complexes, form the basis and are the main MaaS bundle attributes. Methodology is based on scientific and special research methods. The methods used were analysis, synthesis, systematization, classification, generalization of economic and methodological sources. The authors examined the key properties of the processes of formation and development of museums as one of the most representative manifestations of the cultural heritage of society. The article addresses important issues of the tourism sector through the prism of the European museum sector, analyzing: historical aspects of the development of European social institutions of museum affairs, statistical indicators of the number of museums in European countries, emphasizing their key role in the dynamic development of tourism. To thoroughly analyze the development of European museums, the author examines one of the exemplary examples of creating a successful museum sector in Spain. It is proved that the effectiveness of the museum sector development largely depends on its integration into the socio-economic life of the country, accessibility for all social groups of visitors, sustainable development, available additional services, and a modern website with information about the museum.

Museums have been integrated into tourism activities as cultural carriers and have become increasingly prominent in developing the regional cultural tourism industry. How to promote the high-quality development of the museum industry across China is an important topic that needs to be considered at present. Therefore, we used 56 museums in Linyi as the research object, analyzed the spatial distribution characteristics of museums in Linyi and explored the main influencing factors. The results show that (1) the museums in Linyi tend to be cohesively distributed, mainly concentrated in the central to central-eastern part of Linyi, with few museums distributed in other areas, and the distribution of museums within Linyi shows an unevenness; (2) the museums show a tendency to be centrally distributed, and museums show a centralized distribution, forming the main agglomeration area of Lanshan – Hedong-Luozhuang, as well as the two secondary agglomerations of Junan and Yinan-Yishui; (3) Factors such as the degree of resource endowment, the level of economic development, the accessibility of transport, the degree of development of tourism, and the degree of population density all combine to influence the distribution of museums in Linyi; (4) On the whole, Linyi's museums tend to be distributed in areas that are rich in natural and cultural resources, with a higher level of economic development, a well-developed transport network and proximity to rivers and lakes, a better-developed tourism industry, and a higher population density. In the future, Linyi should pay attention to the following aspects in the construction and management of museums: digging deeper into the resources to expand the types and numbers of museums; responding to the market demand and promoting the quality of museums; accelerating the construction of museums by taking advantage of the tourism industry; and improving the infrastructure to help the development of museums.

Museums are generally regarded as having high potential for science communication. In Brazil, however, those institutions are still far away from accomplishing this mission, particularly regarding paleontology. Here we discuss several aspects regarding science communication and museums. The three main activities associated to museums are research, repositories of collections and exhibitions. The collections of the Brazilian museums and the exhibits tend to be poor when compared with similar European and North American institutions, causing a distance between museum and society. Among the attempts of changing this picture, the Museu Nacional/UFRJ, in collaboration with the Museu de Ciência da Terra (DNPM), has organized in 1999 the temporary exhibition THE TIME OF THE DINOSAURS, which turned out to be the most visited exposition regarding fossils organized in the country so far. Among the several benefits of this exhibit was to increase the interest of the population regarding paleontology. This experience has shown that the museum must interact more strongly with the society in order to fully develop its potential of science communication.

Abstract Provenance history sheds light on the relationship between works of art and the social, political, and economic conditions of their biographies. Engaging with the provenance of objects establishes a cultural conversation across time and space with previous owners. For artworks in museums, the public has now entered into that conversation. Museums, as custodians of art and educators of the public, can play a significant role in going beyond the question of ownership to get to the heart of what provenance reveals about the meanings of art: the ways people bring art into their lives, and the ways that objects are loved and studied. This essay delves into these human aspects of provenance, which are too often absent from museum displays, and argues in favor of making this information more visible to the public. Finally, works by contemporary artists Hans Haacke and Maria Eichhorn are discussed as examples of projects that successfully expose complicated object histories and provenance within museum installations.

A vibrant debate about the role and participation of museums in urbanisation, industrialisation, human rights protection, technological progress, climate change and other global challenges has persisted in the field of museums ever since the boom of theoretical museology, which coincided with the development of the sustainable development concept. However, often culture is considered a part of social sustainability pillar, covering manifestations such as equity, participation, social justice etc. (Murphy, 2012; Vallace et al., 2011; Cuthill, 2010) or ignoring cultural aspects altogether (Chiu, 2004). Many voices have called to promote culture as the fourth pillar of sustainable development as a necessary foundation, condition or groundwork through which understandings of social, economic, and environmental sustainability may appear (Soini & Birkeland, 2014; Hawkes, 2001). Although the potential of cultural heritage institutions such as museums towards sustainable development is outlined in relevant literature, there has been no radical shift in museum practice (Ross, 2004; Simon, 2010; Nomikou, 2015). The paper aims to propose the first-ever critical review of sustainable development priorities in Latvia’s most popular museums with a view to finding out their strategic priorities and using these findings to identify today’s specific thematic development lines relevant to the museum sector within the sustainable development framework and to apply this bottom-up principle to propose potential ways to improve the general goal of Latvia’s museum accreditation system – that of promoting sustainable museum practices – with specific pointers and thematic building blocks for the broad umbrella concept of sustainable development. Research objectives include (1) conducting a critical review of relevant literature to identify the role of cultural heritage within the evolution of the sustainable development concept (2) identifying the themes of sustainable development that have been communicated as strategic priorities to stakeholders by the country’s nine most visited museums and (3) using research findings to illuminate and pinpoint a specific array of themes pursuant to the general goal of Latvia’s museum accreditation system – that of promoting sustainable museum practices – for the system to serve as a more comprehensive and targeted tool for fostering sustainabledevelopment in the heritage sector and beyond. Qualitative content analysis has been chosen to analyse museum development strategies and their collection, research, and communication policies, that is, the museum strategic documents to be submitted by the museums seeking to receive state recognition. The study covers Latvia’s nine most popular museums, whose joint annual share of visits amounts to 50% of the country’s total rate (Latvian Academy of Culture, 2018). The study reveals substantial diversity in how Latvia’s most popular museums approach sustainable development goals while also exposing a few significant downsides. According to the findings, museum priorities include (1) heritage preservation, efforts to strengthen national identity, and information and communication technology sustainability in the context of cultural sustainability, (2) financial sustainability as well as tourism- multiplication and image-building in the context of economic sustainability, (3) eco-cultural resilience and improvements in the infrastructure for better energy efficiency as well as a degree of progress towards more sustainable transportation solutions in the context of environmental sustainability and (4) physical, intellectual, socio-economic and emotional accessibility and a focus on boosting social capital in the context of social sustainability. Adjustment of accreditation requirements to meet the sustainable development priorities, at least identified within the study, should, in the long run, raise awareness within the field, enable museums to target their efforts at addressing their downsides and finding possibilities for growth in the context of sustainable development as well as foster sustainable development in the larger field of cultural heritage sites and institutions, which, unlike its kindred sector of museums, exists outside the scope of restrictions associated with accreditation. Such adjustments will help achieve a broader input from the heritage sector towards sustainable development goals.

The scientific conference “Identity and Heritage. Museums of High Schools” held in Krakow, 22–24 November 2017, was a good occasion to learn more about the institutions that look after the broadly defined academic heritage. The legal status of high school museums have been described in the article as well as the consequences thereof. The results of research on such museums existing in Poland have been presented. The study was conducted in 134 public institutions of higher education; it focused on identifying museum and academic collections, and their rank within an organisational structure of the institution. The analysis of collected data allowed to ascertain the number of high school museums operating in Poland, which is 68; they are administrated by 44 various high schools (universities as well as schools of specialisation: technical, medical, agricultural, economic, pedagogical, artistic). It has been pointed out that in the years 2009–2018 as many as 17 new collections were initiated (some of them are still being organised or changed their status after merging of institutions or collections). As far as the museums’ place within an organisational structure of the school is concerned, it has been noted that the faculty museums are the most common ones, followed by those of the general school-wide status. The most important changes that academic museums are presently facing have also been mentioned and described herein, such as transformations of organisational and legal aspects. Last but not least, the virtualisation of collections has been identified as a current issue.

The development of folk crafts in Russia was closely connected with the formation of handicrafts museums that performed complex tasks of preserving, studying and promoting folk art. The study of their history today is one of the problems that have not yet been sufficiently studied in museology. Handicrafts museums were considered by researchers primarily in the general historical context of the influence of state policy and provincial zemstvos on the development of handicraft industry in Russia. However, the phenomenon of handicrafts museums remains insufficiently studied from the point of view of history and the theory of museum work. The type of the handicrafts museum has not yet been singled out as an actual form of the museum institution of the last quarter of the XIX – the first third of the XX centuries, which spread in several provinces of the Russian Empire. The purpose of the article is to review the main activities of the Moscow Handicrafts Museum - an example of the formation of new types of museums in Russia and their influence on the development of folk crafts in the second half of the 19th century – the first third of the 20th centuries. Moscow Handicrafts Museum opened in 1885. His task was to fully promote the development of folk art and the implementation of handicrafts. One of the main features and goals of creating the Handicrafts Museums in the Russian Empire was the formation of an established system of state patronage over the peasants who were freed from serfdom and promotion of their involvement in the new sector of the economy. The museum staff formed the museum collection, actively participated in organizing the training of folk craftsmen, arranging production workshops, became intermediaries in the art market, and was engaged in active exhibition work around the world, especially at large industrial fairs. In the 1890–1910s, the case started in Moscow spread quickly to almost the whole country. Handicrafts museums immediately arose in several provinces of Russia. One of the program documents of that period was the concept of the development of the Handicrafts Museum, proposed in a report of Sergey Morozov in 1910. Thus, at the beginning of the twentieth century in Moscow, the structure of an effective museum was formed, aimed at systematic work with folk crafts and successfully involving a wide range of partners: artists and scientists, merchants and foreign industrialists. Thanks to the assistance of handicrafts museums in Russia in the late XIX – early XX centuries traditional folk crafts were able to survive and be adequately represented throughout the world. The aesthetic significance of folk art has been recognized. The study of folk art has become an important subject of scientific research. All aspects of the multifaceted history of the formation and development of handicrafts museums and their role in the socio-economic and cultural development of Russia are of great scientific interest and require careful further study.

The article explores framing of collective memory about the 1990s in two Russian museums of political history. It provides a comparative analysis of the expositions of the State Central Museum of Contemporary History of Russia (SCMCHR) in Moscow and the Museum of Boris Yeltsin (MBY) in Yeltsin Center in Ekaterinburg, with a focus on material objects representing the mass politics. The comparative analysis of material objects presented in the two museums is supplemented by the observations derived from memoirs of “the ordinary” people. It helps to reconstruct the stories that might be triggered by the objects at display, and to reveal some lacunas and inconsistencies in the expositions. The expositions of SCMCHR and MBY are evidently different, which is determined by their missions and narratives. SCMCHR presents a broader spectrum of political and social perspectives and pays more attention to the negative aspects of the 1990s. The exposition of MBY is focused on the figure of Russia’s first president, who is presented as the leader who brought people freedom. This allows the authors of the exhibition to provide less space for the voices of “ordinary people” and emphasizes positive aspects of the 1990s. In spite of the differences, both expositions provide multidimensional stories that go beyond the stereotypes exploited in political discourses. They illustrate not only the economic difficulties and political turbulences of the 1990s, but also the mass support for the expected changes and new opportunities for social activities. This is particularly true for the case of mass politics, as both expositions provide evidence of political freedoms incomparable to that in Putin’s Russia.

Due to the need for clustering of the tourist, cultural and museum environment, the need for scientific research among cultural scientists, museologists and other researchers has increased. The relevance of the article is due to the need for analyze cluster initiatives in the context of the transformation of individual museums into museum clusters. The object of the study is the regional museum environment. The subject of the study is the museums clusterization as a tool for the formation of a museum clusters. The purpose of the article is to study the cluster initiatives in the process of forming a museum cluster. To achieve the goal, the following tasks were defined: 1. consider the theoretical and applied aspects of the formation of cluster initiatives; 2. analyze the factors of participants' interest in creating a museum cluster; 3. identify elements that negatively affect the creation and functioning of museum clusters. General scientific research methods, such as the method of analysis and synthesis, were used in the research. The method of scientific forecasting was also applied to create cluster initiatives in the museum environment. Despite the range of published works, which belong mainly to economic scientists, there are very few studies on the introduction of cluster initiatives into the cultural environment, which necessitates further study of this area. The scientific novelty of the research consists in the analysis of cluster activities in various branches of cultural life and the presentation by the author of the specifics cluster initiatives. The article considers a cluster as a special type of business projects based on the collective actions of their participants (cluster initiative). The concept of "cluster initiative" is also defined, the main purpose and objectives of cluster initiatives are highlighted. The specifics of its use in the creation of museum clusters are considered.

There has recently been a growth in physical convergence in cultural heritage domains. Part 1 examines this ‘trend’, its drivers and related issues, with particular focus on public libraries and museums. It offers an overview of practice, challenges and opportunities. Through thematic analysis of a comprehensive, literature review of both domains that looked at the wider aspects of collaboration, cooperation, partnerships and integration in the sector as well as physical convergence, it provides insight into background, theory and activities worldwide. It presents discussion on the meaning of convergence, the concept of ‘memory institutions’, the relationship between public libraries and museums in the context of convergence, shared mission and values, convergence and re-convergence, and professionalism and divergence. It concludes with consideration of practical aspects such as motivations for convergence, including digital technology, changing user expectations and culture, and economic and political challenges that impact on physical convergence in a dynamic local government environment.

The article analyzes the formation of the concept “museum cluster”. The authors aim to conceptualize this concept and define it inline with the current level of museum science development. The study is based on normative legal documents, works of foreign authors (M. Porter, M. Enright, and others) and domestic researchers (O.D. Kol, D.A. Yalov, T.V. Tsikhan, and others). The basis of the methodology was the taxonomic approach, which makes it possible to analyze the content of various definitions and build new definitions of the concepts under study on their basis. Structural-functional and descriptive methods were also used, as well as a logical determination procedure. The authors interpret the concept “cluster”, customary in economic theory; consider the features of the production cluster, and analyze the content of the concept “innovation cluster”. Then the authors turn to the study of cluster objects in culture and cultural policy, highlighting the essential general characteristics of the cluster (concentration in one territory, interconnection and competition of all participants, innovation, popularization and economic development of the region). The authors infer that the cluster approach is universal for various types of activities, is flexible and fundamentally applicable in various branches of regional development, including the museum field. Further, the authors consider the essential features of the concept “museum”, focusing on the study of a museum in the aspect of its socio-economic functions. The museum network is analyzed in terms of its importance for the communication process of museums and for the involvement in this process of other interested organizations working in other industries. The authors single out the basic characteristics of all the concepts under study and characterize their correlation. They have established that the museum cluster (unlike the museum network) is characterized by the interaction of various branches of socio-economic activity. The created definition of a museum cluster takes into account not only the geographical localization and interaction of its museums, but also aspects related to increasing the competitiveness of the association and popularizing its area of activity. The authors have established that the introduction of the cluster approach into the museum space is a purposeful process focused on improving the economic and socio-cultural conditions of the region by simplifying the management processes and forms of communication of interacting structures.

Two different scenarios were formulated for carrying out an engineering and geological assessment of the state of not only already museumified monuments, but also those that are supposed to be museumified in order to ensure their long-term, safe and manageable functioning as museums. Conclusion. The need to involve geologists in solving the question of museumification of architectural and archaeological monuments is substantiated. Examples of successful implementation of such a practice, which allowed emergency situations to be avoided, are provided.

Tasks. The author considers the specific aspects of the activities of cultural institutions; identifies current problems in this field; defines the concept of the quality of the activities of cultural institutions and proposes ways to improve it, including through the creation of a unified state information system for the purchase of tickets to cultural institutions of the Russian Federation.Methods. This study uses an integrated approach, general scientific (concretization, abstraction, deduction, induction, analogy) and special methods of cognition (analytical and statistical methods).Results. The author proposes creating a new digital project in the field of purchasing tickets to cultural institutions (museums, theaters, etc.), which would increase the comprehensive quality of their activities. This includes improving the quality of services provided by cultural institutions, improving the planning of tourist and sightseeing routes, managing the flow of visitors in cultural institutions, eliminating the possibility of overflow, preventing the activity of theater and museum ticket speculators, obtaining significant economic effects in the public sector.Conclusions. The unified information system can be used by public authorities in the field of culture and cultural institutions (museums, theaters, etc.), and by the population consuming such services. The system proposed by the author is unique, and its implementation would contribute to improving the quality of services provided by cultural institutions, ensuring transparency of the ticket sale process for all interested parties, reducing the cost of tickets by eliminating intermediary commissions, increasing the revenue of the state budget by eliminating the possibility of ticket fraud, etc.

The issues involved with the economic aspects of cultural institutions, their economic impact, and the measurement of their performance has basically only been given systematic attention during the past few years. Traditionally performance assessments are primarily connected with entrepreneurial subjects, which is why this assessment has been applied primarily to financial metrics. During the 1990’s, this issue started to be examined from a new perspective. The question arose as to whether it is realistic to restrict performance measurement only to financial indicators. More and more, the opinion began to spread that for measurement to be truly useful, it must also focus on nonfinancial indicators. Gradually this idea started to be promoted, primarily in the cultural and the artistic non-profit areas and also that it is necessary to pay the requisite attention to this topic. Several studies have been made and there have also been other kinds of attempts to measure their performance; the root of the problem is that in Czech museums there is no longer a single agreed-upon method for measuring performance. This study is focused on the use of the Balanced Scorecard method and on its application in the museum world and also on its use as a tool for managing, monitoring and planning.

The current enthusiasm for “local food” offers public historians an opportunity to strengthen civic dialogues about place, land and energy use, labor, economy, health, and governance. Moving beyond conventional exhibitry and living history approaches challenges public history practitioners and institutions to confront politicized “real-life” aspects of food systems, but it also offers important benefits to those engaged in the reshaping of both scaled-down food systems and civically engaged museums and historic sites. A nuanced, reflexive engagement with food and farm history can be a way to address much broader issues of economic, institutional, and environmental sustainability.

Studying the cultural participation model of the public and its influencing factors is important for the sustainable development of regional culture. Therefore, in this study, we determined which factors influence the cultural participation of the Chinese public. Firstly, we extracted the key features of the motivation and timing for a museum visit with multiple correspondence analysis (MCA), and explored the relationship of the features of different motivations with the frequency and duration of the public’s visits to the museum. Secondly, we determined the monotonicity of the influence of ordinal variables on cultural participation behavior and identified the mechanism through which the independent variable influences public cultural participation with categorical regression (CATREG). Finally, we analyzed the research data from the museum audience survey in the Hubei Provincial Museum and a national public culture participation survey. We found that education, occupation, academic discipline, income, distance, age, and sex affect the public’s museum participation. This indicates that to guarantee the public’s cultural rights and promote sustainable development, education, planning, and other aspects must be coordinated in cultural management to increase public cultural participation, rather than removing the economic threshold for public cultural participation through public finances alone.

Natural History museums are well known and even famous for the multiple educational opportunities they offer to the public, which includes international visitors, and students and schools. This paper introduces a new role for museums, as sites for the education and certification of new science teachers. In 2017, the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) completed evaluation of its initial six years as the first museum-based Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) Earth science program in the USA. The program was conceptualized in response to multiple levels of local and national education policies, and the still cur-rent need to improve Earth science education for all students, especially those designated ‘at-risk.’ Race to the Top (RTTT) in New York State and the National Commission on Teaching for America’s Future had been call-ing for the reconceptualization of teacher education for several years. MAT began as a pilot program authorized by NYS, the result of a competition for inno-vation in the design of programs outside the traditional university structures that corre-sponded to areas of need (at the inter-section of the sciences and quality education for New English Learners and students with learning disabilities). In developing the museum-specific part of the program, theoretical perspectives from research on Strands of Learning Science in Informal In-stitutions, Spatial thinking, and Place-based Learning. Also the selection of candidates required background in one of the Earth Science fields. In addition, scientists and curators became part of the faculty and directed the field and laboratory residencies at the end of the school year and before beginning to teach in schools. After three years, the pilot was fully authorized to grant its own degrees. The institution operates on multiple levels: it is a teaching residency program that awards degrees, maintains strong partnerships with schools, is a member of the network of Independent Colleges and Universities in New York State, and provides on-site graduate courses for other col-leges and universities on the educational role of, and research on, informal learning in science institutions. The museum is at the heart of the program’s design. Courses include research on learning in museums, pedagogical content knowledge re-garding science, and experiential residencies geared toward preparing candidates to teach in both museums and public schools, as well as conduct independent and team science research. Courses are co-taught by scientists and educators, and are designed to use museum exhibitions and resources, including current and past scientific research, technology, and online teaching tools in order to facilitate instruction, demonstrate the nature of science, and com-plement science with cultural histories that highlight the role of science in society. Evaluation evidence indicates the program has been successful in pre-paring teachers to teach in high-needs urban schools in New York State. An external-impact quanti-tative study by NYU, focused on student performance on the standardized New York State Earth Science Regents Examination, indicated that (1) students of MAT graduates are doing as well as students taught by other Earth science teachers with similar years of experience in New York City; and (2) demographically, MAT teachers instruct a higher percentage of students with lower economic and academic profiles. This paper focuses on how the program design utilizes all aspects of a natural history museum to offer the science museum community, teacher educators, and policy-makers new approaches for the preparation of teachers and the education of their students.

Nature centers, museums, zoos, and other exhibit-based institutions need to sustain or increase visitation for economic viability. To generate visitor interest, exhibits have become more interactive, with immersion exhibits becoming increasingly popular. Visitor research has traditionally focused on learning or social aspects of the visitor experience rather than psychological dimensions related to attitudes, values, and behaviors. Yet nature-focused institutions increasingly support broad-based issues, such as encouraging connection to nature and environmentally responsible behavior. This paper explores how an immersion exhibit without personal interpretation, impacts connectedness to nature, intentions for environmentally responsible behaviors, and other aspects of visitor experiences. Short visits to a free-flying butterfly exhibit were found to augment visitors’ connectedness to nature and environmentally responsible behavioral intentions. Visitors also described how they appreciated the intensely beautiful surroundings, were awe-struck, felt a great deal of peace and relaxation, and felt oneness with nature.

The research sheds light on the importance of funerary art in identifying some details of Palmyra society in the Roman period, due to the important transformations that this period witnessed. It also identifys the intermixture between the local style of funerary art and Roman art that influenced Palmyra’s art at the time. This is achieved by analyzing funerary stelae scenes that have been preserved in local and international museums, and comparing them with their Roman counterparts. One notable result highlights the importance of women in society and the different roles they played, whether housewives or women of society. Palmyra’s artists were eager to depict the deceased’s work by carving some tools indicative of it. Another result elicitates the economic transformations that Palmyra society witnessed beginning in the second century AD, by depicting the Palmyra women and men in full elegance, perhaps to emphasize the prosperity that the Palmyra’s citizens had, due to the city’s increased commercial activity and robust economy. Besides local identitiy, Roman influence appeared in clothes, hairstyles of women and men, along with the use of narrative style to portray the deceased with family members in different dimensions, levels, or alone using the idea of Imagines Clipeatae

The article points out the representations that the city of Chișinău had shortly after the Union of Bessarabia with Romania in the notes written by the American John Kaba and the French Emmanuel de Martonne. Westerners visited it in 1919, and their descriptions and information were intended to inform the people of their countries on various aspects, from economic to political and cultural. Although they aimed to make a study, their representations were not always dry, involving aesthetic attitudes. We believe that some passages fix representative and synthetic images of the period, thus enriching the imagological collection of the capital of interwar Bessarabia. For example, Emmanuel de Martonne saw a Chișinău with wide streets intersecting at right angles, beautiful buildings and parks, with shops and museums. This vision proved, according to him, a modern European urban sensibility.

Abstract The topic discussed in the article concerns adaptation of the interior of the Old Power Plant Bialystok building to a museum space related to transport. The justification for taking up the topic is paying attention to the unique aesthetic values of post-production elements of interior infrastructure with a view to giving them a new architectural spirit. The idea behind this issue concerns the possibility of constructing a coherent composition, showing contrasting aspects: historical and modern, relating to both museum facilities and exhibits on display. The aim is therefore to show the creation of a new public space that is an interesting alternative to classic museums. Numerous functional and spatial changes, created during many years of exploitation, lead to a kind of chaos inside buildings, which was observed on the example of the interior in question. In the era of globalization, industrial development and as a result of urban processes, the buildings that used to be centers of economic development, today have been absorbed and surrounded by urban fabric. Deserted and devoid of its original function, they deteriorate, giving the image of breaking the emotional ties with the achievements, which were a priority for our ancestors. Attention should be paid to losing the authenticity of building interiors and extracting the essence of industrial beauty, which should be emphasized in accordance with the implementation concept. Cultural heritage has not only a material but also a sentimental dimension. Creative activities within the historic structure should be carried out with full respect for the existing structure, taking into account the overriding issue, that each interference affects the original form in the existing spatial arrangement.

Organisation of exhibitions from the point of view of copyright (Act on Copyright and Related Rights of 4 Feb. 1994, further copyright) is a multifaceted issue. The analysis conducted in the paper boils down to some selected aspects: beginning with the right to display, through exhibition as a separate copyrighted work, up to the exhibition author, namely curator. When purchasing items for collections or acquiring them on the ground of a loan contract, museums should make sure the work can be exploited through public display. Such agreement can be either expressed in the contract (rights or licence transfer) or can be implicit (it can be then assumed that non-exclusive licence with all its limitations has been transferred). Furthermore, the construction of fair use from Art. 32.1 of Act on Copyright can be applicable. An issue apart is the question of exhibition as a separate copyrighted work. It can be a co-authored work in the case when it combines creative efforts of e.g. curator and author of the exhibition layout. The article analyses exhibition understood as a collection of exhibits selected and arranged following a script or presented following a layout in order to fulfil the assumptions of a derivative work (Art. 2 Act on Copyright) or a collection (Art. 3 Act on Copyright). As a result of the assumption that exhibition is a work, the curator becomes an author, thus will have copyright to the created work. Depending on the formal curator-museum relationship, the author’s economic rights shall either be transferred to the museum (employee’s work, specific-task contract with rights transfer or licence granting), or shall exceptionally remain with the author.

The history of Russian chest production has hundreds of years. For centuries, the chest has played an important role in the cultural and economic life of Russia. It acquired over time the value of a valuable historical source. However, it has not yet been analyzed in the scientific literature from this side. This paper aims to fill this gap. The author singled out three of main aspects: inscriptions and stamps on chests and caskets; international relations in the area of culture and economy; evolution of tools and technologies. All of them are examined on specific examples. The items from the collection of the Russian Museum and other domestic and foreign museums were involved. The author concluded that the Russian chest as a source is of undoubted value for historical science. This feature of chest is worthy of futher study.

Alison Cullingford’s The Special Collections Handbook provides information specialists with a timely guide to managing the rapid and continuous changes buffeting today’s libraries, archives, and museums. First published in 2011 during the global recession, the book focuses on all aspects of special collections work. The work is informed by the ongoing political and economic uncertainties caused by budget cuts and austerity policies in the cultural heritage and education sectors. Since the book’s initial publication, information specialists have recognized the need to “tell their story” and demonstrate their value to parent organizations, donors, and community members. Advocacy and community engagement are now seen as being critical business functions. Indeed, Cullingford argues that librarians and archivists must adopt a new “mind-set” (along with skills and tools) if they are to be successful in the digital era. The revised and greatly expanded 2017 second edition of The Special Collections Handbook examines this new mentality and professional shift in priorities. According to the author, special collections specialists must embrace innovation, entrepreneurialism, and marketing to navigate the current turbulent information environment.

Digital economy is a natural stage of development of economic system, in which the main values of economic actors consist in the knowledge and nonmaterial production. Within scientific literature prevail research of the impact of separate aspects of digital transformation upon the activity of tourism agencies and development of vacation destinations, namely the use of digital booking platforms, augmented reality in museums and exhibitions, as well as the Internet of things. However, interrelation of these vectors of development in the process of digital transformation, as well as the mechanisms of its management applicable to the sphere of tourism and Russian economy are studied insufficiently. The subject of this research is the economy and management of a separate tourism agency and the entire industry. The goal of this work consists in conducting a comprehensive research of Russian and foreign literature on the topic of methodology for managing digital transformation in different economic sectors; as well as determination of distinct characteristic of managing digital transformations in tourism sphere and the factors affecting this process. The author applies comparative analysis of literary sources and experience of managing digital transformation through implementation of digital platforms. The introduction of platform approach in management of digital transformation substantiated the transition towards network service interaction (versus traditional cooperation) as the backbone of the economy. Digital transformation of the entire economic sector requires close collaboration of economic actors within the framework of a region or a country. A conclusion is made the most appropriate model of the development of tourism sector of the economy is the ecosystem of digital platforms. Due to its peculiarities, tourism sphere can become a favorable platform for approbation of management techniques of digital transformation, functionality of regional digital platforms and system integrators.

The article considers the development dynamics of approaches to the understanding the concept of “tourist destination” in the works of various authors, as well as notes the shortcomings taking into account the prevailing socio-economic conditions. The authors specify the notion of “tourist destination”. It can be any object (sociogeolocation, territory) from the tour operator catalogue, in other words it is a site in stable demand among tourists. The territory with the lack of sufficient infrastructure, high-qualified human resources, elements of security and an adequate level of management is able to be in demand due to active and passive image. The concept of “acting (real)” and “potential tourist destination” is distinguished. The former is sociogeolocation and currently in demand in tourists. Potential tourist destination is the territory possessing tourist potential (resources), which due to various reasons is not popular in tourists. The conditions for the formation of the acting tourist destination (Donetsk is a vivid example) are defined: transformation of tourist conditions into attractions, the improvement of the basic and subsidiary infrastructure, optimization of the management and organizational subsystems, and high-qualified staff. Political and social aspects are also important. The problems and prospects of forming acting (real) tourist destination in Donetsk are analyzed. The city has enough natural, cultural and historical resources. Climate, topography, and high level of landscaping are advantageous. There are 262 historical and cultural monuments, 140 museums and museum rooms, 3 national theatres, circus in the city. Biosocial and event resources are also presented. At the moment, Donetsk is a potential tourist destination, which has all the chances to become a real tourist destination.

In the tourist complex of the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic in 2019, there is a positive trend in the number of beds, the number of persons accommodated, the number of tourist companies and the number of persons rested, and the number of visits to museums and theaters. Despite the positive dynamics of these indicators, there are negative aspects, characterized by a decrease in the number of children who had a rest in health camps for children, the number of Russian tourists sent by CBD travel agencies in the Russian Federation and in foreign tours, an imbalance between supply and demand (demand exceeds supply). The obtained results reveal an understanding of specific activities that ensure the economic growth of the tourism industry and the competitive advantages of the region. The results of the study can be applied in developing trends in the development of the tourism industry in the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic, in educational processes and in the tourism sector.

An analysis of various aspects of the return of Ukrainian cultural treasures has been conducted. The article examines the collaboration between the Borys Grinchenko Kyiv University and the Archive-Museum of the Ukrainian Free Academy of Sciences in the USA in 2009. It demonstrates that archival materials and personal belongings of the Kosach family were transferred from the Funds of the Archive-Museum of the Ukrainian Free Academy of Sciences to the Lesia Ukrainka Research Institute. It is indicated that in 2010, a concept was developed and the initial stage of the “Cultural Treasures of Ukraine” information system was implemented. This system comprised eight registers of cultural treasures: those lost during and as a result of World War II (libraries, museums); those returned to Ukraine; those related to the history of the Ukrainian people located outside Ukraine; those sought nationally; those sought upon requests from other countries; confiscated cultural treasures; objects with permits for temporary export from Ukraine. It is noted that during this period, exhibitions, cultural projects, presentations, and discussions related to the return of Ukrainian cultural treasures were organized. After the cessation of the State Service for Control over the Movement of Cultural Values across the State Border in 2011, the Department for the Control of the Movement of Cultural Values was established within the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine. Importantly, despite funding constraints due to an economic crisis, efforts were made to search for cultural treasures and maintain cooperation with the Ukrainian diaspora. Additionally, the article highlights initiatives concerning the return of Scythian gold and the intricate process of repatriating cultural artifacts to Ukraine. The protracted legal battle in this matter is analyzed. Methodological work was also carried out to establish specific norms for conducting expertise on cultural values, leading to the approval of Methodological Recommendations for the State Expertise of Cultural Values by the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine in 2019. Notably, contacts with the United States of America and Germany have been of particular importance in the realm of cultural treasures repatriation.

The present study identifies suitable sustainable public policy for the administration of archaeological zones in Mexico, particularly in the states of Yucatán, Campeche and Quintana Roo (Maya region). Given the rapid economic growth of the Southeastern region of Mexico, it is necessary to implement a comprehensive and sustainable form of administration for the cultural and archaeological heritage. Key components of the ideal policy are aligned to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Data is based on researchers’ own experiences on how these SDGs can act as a base for the much needed change in the management of Mexico´s archaeological zones. We are looking at a policy that has clear goals, objectives, concrete strategies and actions including: (1) Comprehensive plan, (2) Regional plan, (3) Land use plan—master plan, (4) Cultural tourism plan which covers ecotourism and nature based tourism, art centers, museums and monuments. The resource management plan should cover aspects like: (1) disaster planning, (2) operations and marketing, (3) interpretation, (4) budgetary issues and (5) financing. Success in the implementation of such a policy requires the strengthening of regional and local federalism, transparency, accountability, corporate governance and planning for sustainable cultural tourism development.

Background. Despite a number of large-scale projects focused on the study of childhood, there is an urgent need to preserve modern and historical examples of children culture. Psychological and pedagogical ideas on the age speciZcs ofchild development, elaborated within the framework of cultural-historical approach, serve as a solid foundation for the Russian Museum of Childhood. Objective. [e aim of the article is to present an outline of possible activities and scientiZc approaches to the development of the Russian Museum of Childhood. Methods. [e available data on the activities of Childhood Museums in Russia and abroad are profoundly analysed. Results. [e study of the experience in creating museums devoted to the culture of childhood has shown that children’s toys constitute the dominant feature of collections. At the same time, practically no museums represent various aspects of the social situation of a child’s development nor re\ect they the peculiarities of child’s daily and cultural life. [e idea of preservation and exhibition of cultural samples of children’s life forms the basis for investigating possible directions of scientiZc and practical work of the Russian Museum of Childhood. It is suggested to assemble thematic museum collections re\ecting the socio-cultural components of children at di]erent ages in di]erent historical periods. [e museum’s target audience includes children, parents, and teachers. In addition to exhibition and excursion activities, the museum is supposed to serve as a place of children’s leisure and creativity, a space of communication and education for parents and teachers. ScientiZc life of the Russian Museum of Childhood will be based on deep research into the history of toys and play traditions as well as the history of childhood in an interdisciplinary context. Both, the contemporary culture of childhood, and the historical aspect of psychological and pedagogical research on childhood will be analysed. Conclusion. Creation of such a cultural space will contribute to the preservation and maintenance of intergenerational relationships and continuity in the family. It will also promote educational culture of parents and professional development of teachers. Conducting scientiZc research in the Russian Museum of Childhood will make it possible to develop science-intensive and culture-intensive innovative psychological and educational projects.

The aim of the study is to analyze the theoretical aspects of historical re-enactments, to identify trends and prospects for the development of historical re-enactments, as well as provide recommendations for the development of event tourism in Ukraine. The article considers the main forms of historical re-enactments. Usually such events take place in the form of festivals or in the form of "living" museums ("eco-museums"), which operate temporarily or on a permanent basis. The paper shows the role of historical re-enactments as a basis for the formation of an event tourism product. The number of events based on historical re-enactments is growing rapidly. In the field of historical re-enactments, a whole industry was formed; professional historians, ethnographers, tailors, gunsmiths and representatives of many other specialties are involved in their organization. In order to determine the tourist potential of festivals of historical re-enactments, the experience of holding such events in Spain is analyzed. It was found that the theme of the events is mainly related to the events that took place in this region, local people were involved in the organization of events. In most cases, the organizers are representatives of regional structures (both local authorities and public organizations) in cooperation with tourist offices. In conclusion, it is noted that historical re-enactments today can contribute to the development of local tourism, as well as economic development, and the activities of reconstructors can be an effective factor in preserving cultural heritage. In this area, the work of reconstructors can be an effective factor in "reviving" historical memory, as well as drawing attention to the problem of preservation and use of cultural heritage by the authorities. According to the author, event tourism is one of the most promising areas of tourism revival in our country. It is important that such activities are consistent and designed for the long term, which will form a certain tradition, which will also be the key to success.

Roman jewellery is often seen as a clear marker of wealth and luxury. While it is often classified and analysed as a single class and with an emphasis on pieces composed of gold and other precious materials, it is only when we start to look at the differences between individual objects that we can get a more nuanced understanding of this material culture and its role in Roman society and culture. Undoubtedly there was a market for comparable forms of jewellery for women from different socio-economic backgrounds to display similar aspects of their identities but within their own budgets (e.g., young, (presumably) married mothers-to-be). It is only by considering the spectrum of luxury that we can highlight how differences in quality and design reveal important choices behind the use of particular items of jewellery or packages of personal adornment. In other words, we should be cautious of grouping all jewellery together and under the simple label of ‘luxury.’ Not all gold jewellery, for example, was created equal. The study of the socio-cultural activities of entrepreneurs including the history of everyday life as its integral part is one of the important aspects of the study of regional history. The historiography of the history of socio-cultural practices in pre-revolutionary Siberia has not been fully studied yet. The purpose of the article is to identify the patterns of the modern historiographic situation on the basis of understanding the study of the history of socio-cultural practices of business people in pre-revolutionary Siberia. The work used the general methods of scientific knowledge: historicism, logical analysis, deduction and induction, which made it possible to conduct a consistent analysis of the works of researchers, to identify the main characteristics. Modern researchers in their works have raised a number of problems: trends in the development of charity, the scope of investment of donated money, forms of participation in various events, contributions to the development of libraries, museums, schools, orphanages, etc. Historians used quantitative indicators of the participation of entrepreneurs in the social and cultural life of Siberian cities, the motives of the merchants’ charity. The following topics were studied: support for education, participation in the improvement of cities, contribution to the development of culture and museum affairs, financing of expeditions, church and charitable activities, targeted assistance to those in need. In general, and in the conclusions of this article, the expansion of scientific knowledge about the socio-social history of Siberia after the reform period is emphasized, the points of view of historians on the role and place of businessmen in the cultural and social spheres of the life of the region are revealed. Historiographic analysis is relevant from the point of view of modern discussions about the contribution of entrepreneurs to the development of cities, culture, economy, and charity in pre-revolutionary Siberia. The revival of entrepreneurship, modern socio-economic processes encourage specialists to in-depth study of the history of socio-cultural practices of the Siberian merchants.

The article analyzes one of the key aspects of the representation of authorities, i. e. channeling their official image to the population. Based on the achievements of Russian historiography and information from published and newly found archival sources, it identifies ways and tools used by the Soviet Authorities to deliberately and purposefully construct the idea about itself in the minds of Soviet citizens in Siberia and effectively channel it during 1921–1929. Among the main translators of the official image of the Soviet authorities were such institutions as the Communist Party, Soviets, trade unions, the All-Union Leninist Young Communist League (Komsomol), various public organizations, media press, cultural and political educational institutions. The article shows that these translators used tools that generally can be divided into three groups. The first one is traditional or universal tools, including congresses, conferences, meetings, elections, theaters, museums, clubs, libraries, books, newspapers, and magazines. The second group – tools established by the Soviet regime, including illiteracy elimination organizations, Izba Chitalnya (“village reading rooms”), Soviet party schools, Peasant Club, and “red” corners. The third group – unique or innovative tools: “nomination”, patronage of the city over the village. The article concludes by arguing that in the early years of the New economic policy (NEP) the efficiency of the majority translators and tools of the representation of the Soviet authorities were limited. However, as the Central committee of the RCP(b) abandoned the emergency policy in Siberia and the economic situation in the country and in the region had been improved, their work and influence were gradually restored. Because of this, the authorities got back their abilities of self-presentation in different forms, in different languages, among urban and rural residents, men and women, Russians and national minorities, and literate and illiterate citizens.

Portugal’s EPAC (Empresa Pública do Abastecimiento dos Cereais) silo network, initially planned in the 1930s but constructed and utilised primarily in the 1970s, consisted of 31 silos with a total capacity of 841,100 t. The network’s usage declined, however, due to market liberalisation and Portugal’s accession to the European Economic Community in 1985. This study focuses on adapting a methodology to inventory and analyse the 31 silos in the EPAC network, considering their general features, construction, technological facilities, and socioeconomic aspects. The silos are situated in 30 cities and towns, predominantly in the country’s key grain-growing regions, particularly the Alentejo region. While there are variations in design and construction, most EPAC silos contain two or three rows of circular reinforced concrete cells and use the spaces between cells for storage. Their capacities range from 6000 to 35,000 t. Some are inland grain reception and storage silos, while others are larger-capacity port silos designed to unload grain rapidly onto ships using mechanical or pneumatic unloaders. These structures are a significant part of Portugal’s agro-industrial heritage and have, in some cases, been repurposed as museums or event venues. Compared to other agro-industrial buildings, silos pose unique conversion challenges due to their height and design complexities. Examples of successful reuse in countries like Spain and Italy may provide insights for potential silo projects in Portugal. However, analysis suggests that such proposals and similar initiatives may be viable only in the more highly populated towns.

This article examines the idea of disinterestedness using the case of a private MO museum. The philosophical idea of disinterestedness and its reflections in the creative economy are presented. The idea of disinterestedness is explored as a factor of sustainability in economics. The paradoxes as follows related to disinterestedness in general and to the analyzed case in particular are examined. Although disinterestedness covers detachment from any theoretical concepts, it is also an aesthetic concept. Although this is a futile activity from an economic point of view, disinterestedness helps to remain independent from economic fluctuations. Although the founders of the MO Museum do not expect financial benefits, they are characterized by economic thinking in order to balance the museum’s finances. Disinterestedness, although detached from any interests, includes social responsibility for the state of the art, the desire to enrich and educate society, the development of social connections and personal relationships, and the need for interesting activities. Business management requires a broader intention, but art also requires flexible management. This study is important because of the interdisciplinary approach and the aspects of social responsibility and sustainability in business. In addition, this research opens up a new perspective in connecting the idea of disinterestedness not only with the patronage of art but also with the needs of the business itself. The methods used in this article are as follows: analysis of philosophical literature on the topic of disinterestedness and aspects of disinterestedness in the creative economy, a case study that includes interviews with experts (museum founders and director), and their analysis and summarization. The main finding is as follows: disinterestedness in art management and the creative economy is an aspect of economic sustainability that allows both to expand the economic approach and to show its limits.

Background The Covid-19 pandemic has had unprecedented effects on individual lives and livelihoods as well as on social, health, economic and political systems and structures across the world. This article derives from a unique collaboration between researchers and museums using rapid response crowdsourcing to document contemporary life among the general public during the pandemic crisis in Sweden. Methods and findings We use qualitative analysis to explore the narrative crowdsourced submissions of the same 88 individuals at two timepoints, during the 1st and 2nd pandemic waves, about what they most fear in relation to the Covid-19 pandemic, and how their descriptions changed over time. In this self-selected group, we found that aspects they most feared generally concerned responses to the pandemic on a societal level, rather than to the Covid-19 disease itself or other health-related issues. The most salient fears included a broad array of societal issues, including general societal collapse and fears about effects on social and political interactions among people with resulting impact on political order. Notably strong support for the Swedish pandemic response was expressed, despite both national and international criticism. Conclusions This analysis fills a notable gap in research literature that lacks subjective and detailed investigation of experiences of the general public, despite recognition of the widespread effects of Covid-19 and its’ management strategies. Findings address controversy about the role of experts in formulating and communicating strategy, as well as implications of human responses to existential threats. Based on this analysis, we call for broader focus on societal issues related to this existential threat and the responses to it.

Seascapes, both as specific ecosystems and as cultural manifestations formed through human action, are important in shaping economic and social relations and entail a range of experiences and meanings for human societies. Several studies in recent decades have underlined the importance of island environments and seascapes. The factors that shape the dynamic relationship with the sea and form its cultural expression, as well as the resources and activities related to it and the way they are perceived and change over time are important parameters in approaching seascapes. The investigation of the coastal environment of Corfu through a diachronic perspective using a variety of sources, such as archaeological remains, ethnographic evidence and archival material, was developed in the framework of the Fish&CHIPS project. The project aimed to link the historical and archaeological research of the coastal environment as a special ecosystem and part of the cultural heritage, at the regional level, with the current fishing communities of Corfu and Taranto in Apulia. It also aimed to highlight the interconnection of human societies, from ancient times to the present, with the sea and its resources, focusing on fishing and maritime traditions, and at a second level to contribute to the creation of sustainable development prospects for the local fishing communities through the diversification of their economic activities. The present paper focuses on key aspects of the marine and coastal environment of Corfu and the way it was transformed over time. The starting point is the strategic location of Corfu in the seascape of the Ionian and Adriatic Seas and the coastal ecosystems that form part of the island’s landscape (coastal and inland villages related to the sea, wetlands and lagoons, estuaries, salt flats). They are considered primarily in economic terms, examining resources and practices of exploitation of these environments in different periods and, also, influences on patterns of habitation and landscape use. The Community Map of Southern Corfu was developed on the basis of research into these environments in both spatial and temporal aspects and in cooperation with the present-day local communities (Figure 1). The aim was to increase the value of the coastal and marine environments as part of the cultural heritage of the region and create a network of walking cultural routes that link these specific environments and their communities and form the core of the ‘Petritis and South Corfu Ecomuseum’. The ecomuseum approach moves beyond the closed walls of conventional museums and its basic principles can be summarised as follows: a) the importance of the wider geographical region and its perception by the local communities through the experiences and traditions that shape the collective memory and identity of an area, b) the promotion and on-site preservation of elements of the material and intangible heritage resources of the place, c) the active participation of the local community and d) a direction towards sustainability and regeneration, with a parallel connection with primary production (crafts, arts and crafts, ecotourism facilities, cultural tourism).

The review of an anthology on the history of the Aginsk Steppe Duma published by drs. B.V. Bazarov, B.T. Zhalsanova, L.V.Kuras notes that hundreds the new archival documents offer a holistic view on the governmental politics concerning one of large ingenious peoples of East Russia. The composers have identified and presented documents reflecting various aspects of local self-government of the Aginsk Duma created on the basis of M.M. Speransky’s Statute on the Inorodtsy of 1822. The review contains a brief characteristic of the archival documents corpus systematized in volumes and argues their information value. The documents contain data on the officials of the Duma, personnel structure in dynamics from its foundation to its termination. The edition offers an array of documents on tax policy pertaining to indigenous population, public censures, correspondence on administrative and land disputes at the turn of the 19th century. Authors-composers have published family lists of the Aginsk buryats. The review underscores the information value of the commentary included in all volumes of the edition, the nominal indexes numbering hundreds of surnames. The illustrative component of this three-volume edition is also emphasized: there are rare photos of officials of the Aginsk department, meetings of tsesarevitch Nikolai Aleksandrovich in Transbaikalia in 1892, deputy of the State Duma, descendants of families from the Transbaikal steppes in the Soviet period. The review emphasizes the importance of such edition for studying governmental policies concerning ingenious peoples, balance of government and local self- government, social and economic and cultural development of East regions in the Imperial period. Materials of the three-volume edition open numerous unpublished documents to researchers. The review notes its value for historians, local historians, archivists, museums employees, and those researching their family tree.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to provide an overall picture of the five articles included in this issue highlighting their contributions and revealing the importance of academic research for arts and culture management as a nascent topic in the Latin American context. Design/methodology/approach This paper elaborates a critical description of the main aspects of the papers included. The contributions are grouped together around central topics pertaining to arts and culture management such as: audience creation and environment; museums, competition and efficiency; and management skills and entrepreneurship. Findings The contributions of the articles are as diverse as the topics included in them. Some highlight the importance of the context in audience creation processes, others reveal the determinants of the institutional variables in the efficiency of artistic organisations, and a final one, reveals the deconstruction of an artistic genre and its contribution to the comprehension of organisations’ innovation processes. However, the most important contribution, within the Latin American context, consists basically in a process of dissemination and knowledge of the research developed in different international contexts and which may apply to the analysis of arts and culture management in the region. Originality/value As noted in the body of this paper, the topic of cultural management is novel and has acquired notable importance in developed economies in which the arts and culture sector has strategic value. Latin America reveals an institutional revolution which situates the cultural sector in a predominant position where its contribution to the creation of social and economic value turns it into a key field in Latin American societies. Arts and culture constitute a factor of value creation which requires carefully planned and pertinent management processes. This publication, through its five contributions, all European, is a valuable tool of dissemination for knowledge and management in Latin America, where academic research into the sector is, as yet, incipient.

Purpose – This paper aims to discuss the key aspects of the international trade in antiquities and the practice of philanthropic donation of objects to museums that allow for certain types of tax deduction manipulation, using a case of tax deduction manipulation from Australia and a case of tax fraud from the United States as examples. Design/methodology/approach – Two thoroughly researched case studies are presented which illustrate the particular features of current and past antiquities donation incentivisation schemes which leave them open to manipulation and fraud. Findings – The valuation of antiquities is subjective and problematic, and the operations of both the antiquities market and the museums sector are traditionally opaque. Because of this, tax incentivisation of antiquities donations is susceptible to fraud. Originality/value – This paper presents the mechanisms of the antiquities market and museum world to an audience that is not familiar with it. It then clearly demonstrates how the traditional practices of this world can be manipulated for the purposes of tax fraud. Two useful case studies are presented.
