Анотація:
Video compression techniques have been applied routinely in order to conserve storage space and minimize bandwidth utilization in various video applications. To reduce inter-pixel redundancies inside and between video frames, video codecs (coder/decoder or compression/decompression) are mainly characterized by applying motion estimation and motion compensation (MEMC) in combination with discrete cosine transform (DCT). However, blocking artifacts are obvious from the block-based motion estimation and transformation, especially at low bit rates. Due to the intrinsic advantages of multiresolution and scalability of discrete wavelet transform (DWT), video compression techniques have been infused with exciting prospects by the beneficial integration of motion estimation and wavelet transformation. The contributions of this paper are in (1) proposing a design architecture of the wavelet-domain encoder and decoder; (2) implementing the multiresolution motion estimation and compensation method; and in (3) realizing the dynamic entropy encoding and decoding, so as to achieve more efficient video compression than the conventional spatial domain methods for low bit rate applications without the annoying blocking artifacts.

Анотація:
The paper proposes the multiagent techniques for approximation of agent’s state in the multiresolution multiagent simulation. The key methods we have used for state aggregation and disaggregation are: consensus algorithm and formation control. The idea of the coordination of multiple agents has emerged from both observation and simulation of a collective behavior of biological entities. The consensus algorithms are commonly used for the cooperative control problems in the multiagent systems, whilst the formation control is the most popular and fundamental motion coordination problem in the multiagent systems, where agents converge to predefined geometric shapes. The presented approach shows that multiagent methods seem to be very promising in multiresolution simulation. Consensus and formation control algorithms remove necessity to specify the much more complex algorithms for the aggregation and disaggregation needs.

In this paper we propose studying several ways to implement a realistic and efficient VLSI design for a gradient-based dense motion estimator. The kind of estimator we focus on belongs to the class of differential methods. It is classically based on the optical flow constraint equation in association with a smoothness regularization term and also incorporates robust cost functions to alleviate the influence of large residuals. This estimator is expressed as the minimization of a global energy function defined within the framework of an incremental formulation associated with a multiresolution setup. In order to make possible the conception of efficient hardware, we consider a modified minimization strategy. This new minimization strategy is not only well suited to VLSI derivation, it is also very efficient in terms of quality of the result. The complete VLSI derivation is realized using high-level specifications.

Multislice computed tomography (MSCT) scanners offer new perspectives for cardiac kinetics evaluation with 4D dynamic sequences of high contrast and spatiotemporal resolutions. A new method is proposed for cardiac motion extraction in multislice CT. Based on a 4D hierarchical surface-volume matching process, it provides the detection of the heart left cavities along the acquired sequence and the estimation of their 3D surface velocity fields. A Markov random field model is defined to find, according to topological descriptors, the best correspondences between a 3D mesh describing the left endocardium at one time and the 3D acquired volume at the following time. The global optimization of the correspondences is realized with a multiresolution process. Results obtained on simulated and real data show the capabilities to extract clinically relevant global and local motion parameters and highlight new perspectives in cardiac computed tomography imaging.

Standard instrument for the clinical diagnosis of sleep apnea is large and based on invasive method, which is not comfortable and not suitable for daily inspection. A video-based measurement method for the respiration rate (RR) is therefore proposed, which is meaningful to the home diagnosis of sleep apnea. We proposed a novel method for the visualization and calculation of RR from a video containing a sleeping person. The video was decomposed by spatio-temporal Laplacian pyramid method into multiresolution image sequences, which were filtered by an infinite-impulse-response bandpass filter to extract the respiration movement in the video. The respiration movement was amplified, and fused into the original video. On the other hand, the signal intensity of the filtering results was compared between layers of Laplacian pyramid to identify the layer with the strongest movement caused by respiration. A morphological calculation was conducted on the image reshaped from the filtered results in this layer, to find the region of interest (ROI) with most significant movement of respiration. The image intensity in the ROI was spatially averaged into a one-dimensional signal, of which the frequency domain was analyzed to obtain RR. The ROI and the calculation results for RR were visualized on the video with enhanced respiration movement. Ten videos lasting 30–60[Formula: see text]s were recorded by a general webcam. The respiration movement of the subject was successfully extracted and amplified, no matter the posture was supine or side lying. The thoracic and abdominal parts were generally identified as ROI in all postures. RR was calculated by the frequency domain analysis for the averaged image intensity in ROI with the error no more than 1 time per minute, and further, as well as ROI, was fused into the amplified video. The region of respiration movement and RR is calculated by the noncontact method, and well visualized in a video. The method provides a novel screening tool for the population suspected of sleep apnea, and is meaningful to the home diagnosis of sleep illness.

Through reorganizing the execution order and optimizing the data structure, we proposed an efficient parallel framework for H.264/AVC encoder based on massively parallel architecture. We implemented the proposed framework by CUDA on NVIDIA’s GPU. Not only the compute intensive components of the H.264 encoder are parallelized but also the control intensive components are realized effectively, such as CAVLC and deblocking filter. In addition, we proposed serial optimization methods, including the multiresolution multiwindow for motion estimation, multilevel parallel strategy to enhance the parallelism of intracoding as much as possible, component-based parallel CAVLC, and direction-priority deblocking filter. More than 96% of workload of H.264 encoder is offloaded to GPU. Experimental results show that the parallel implementation outperforms the serial program by 20 times of speedup ratio and satisfies the requirement of the real-time HD encoding of 30 fps. The loss of PSNR is from 0.14 dB to 0.77 dB, when keeping the same bitrate. Through the analysis to the kernels, we found that speedup ratios of the compute intensive algorithms are proportional with the computation power of the GPU. However, the performance of the control intensive parts (CAVLC) is much related to the memory bandwidth, which gives an insight for new architecture design.

Although existing nondestructive evaluation methods and transducers provide useful quantitative information on composite materials, they measure only macroscopic deformations and, often, only after the strain has exceeded a certain predetermined threshold. It is well established, however, that maintenance intervention is more effective if applied early in the deformation process. A new method for computing the microscopic internal displacement fields associated with permanent deformations of three-dimensional asphalt-aggregate cores with complex internal structure and satisfying the small gradient approximation of continuum mechanics is presented. The displacement fields are computed from a sequence of three-dimensional X-ray computed tomography images, obtained using a new imaging protocol developed specifically for mass-fraction and mix-density estimates of composite cores. By assuming that the image intensity of the tomographic images represents a certain conserved property that is incompressible, a constrained nonlinear regression model for motion estimation is developed. Successive linear approximation is then employed and each linear subsidiary problem is solved using variational calculus. The resulting Euler-Lagrange equations are approximated and solved using finite differencing methods and a conjugate gradient algorithm in a multiresolution framework. The method is validated using pairs of synthetic images of plane shear flow. The three-dimensional displacement field in the interior of a cylindrical asphalt/aggregate core loaded to a state of permanent deformation is calculated using this method.

UAV Video is rapidly emerging as a widely used source of imagery for many applications in recent years. This paper presents our research on the mosaic of UAV video for the purpose of harbor surveillance. First, one new framework on estimating video frame transformation with Optical flow is presented in this paper. For this new framework, fewer number of Gaussian pyramid is created for implementing for the multiresolution approach and thus, more details for optical flow computation is well kept; Second, we make a discussion on using Fourier-Mellin Transformation in image frequency domain to estimate initial motion parameter of adjacent video frames and with those initial motion parameters, small displacements for optical flow computation can be achieved; The experimental results demonstrated that the mosaic image generated from aerial video shows satisfied visual quality and its surveillance application for fast response to time-critical event, e.g., flood, is descried.

The estimative of turbulent quantities by Reynolds average depend on time scale average. This average window should be great enough to describe all turbulent contributions and small enough to filter the largest scales (low frequencies contributions). In this work are applied the multiresolution decomposition to find the spectral gap that split the turbulent of non-turbulent motions, this way the best time scale for the Reynolds average. The results of that methodology are compared with 1, 5, 15, and 30min windows average. This task is accomplished by the linear correlation between tubulent kinetic energy and friction velocity scale. The results reveal a better linear relationship between kinetic energy and friction velocity scale with adaptative time scale average than ones found with frozen window average.

AbstractIn the multi-view video coding, both temporal and inter-view redundancies can be exploited by using standard block-based motion estimation (BBME) technique. In this paper, an extensive review of BBME algorithms proposed within the last three decades is presented. Algorithms are divided into five categories: 1) based on the search position number reduction; 2) multiresolution; 3) based on the simplification of matching criterion; 4) fast full search; 5) computation-aware. Algorithms are compared in terms of their efficiency and computational complexity.
