Up to now, handover studies have typically involved one health care professional group or a single hospital department. Using distributed cognition and cognitive work analysis as frameworks, this ethnographic study is intended to identify the common and unique elements of handover of care in three different hospital departments (Internal Medicine, General Surgery, and Emergency Medicine), with all professional groups that conduct handover. In addition, feedback will be sought from patients and their families on the content of handovers as well as the handover process.

Abstract Introduction Delirium is still perceived as a “geriatric medicine competency”, despite its high prevalence across most specialties. Collective multi-disciplinary team performance in implementation of multi-component interventions is key. Simulation training incorporates the complex interplay of non-technical factors, specifically, role recognition and empowerment, inter-personal skills and teamwork that are pivotal in delivering effective delirium care. Methods Funding was approved by Health Education England. 2 pilot teaching sessions were arranged in the simulation ward. 3 scenarios were developed, each requiring a facilitator, an actor and three participants- a foundation-year doctor, a nurse/healthcare assistant and a therapist. Scenario 1 dealt with a patient with hypoactive delirium with focus on identification and multidisciplinary optimisation. Scenario 2 challenged participants with management of an agitated patient. Scenario 3 involved discharging a patient with resolving delirium and a reluctant relative, with emphasis on mental capacity assessment. Communication, patient risk assessment and challenging perceived role barriers were global themes. Participant feedback was captured using unstructured interviews and pre- and post-session 5-point Likert confidence scale in various learning outcomes. Results 16 participants were included- 4 foundation year doctors, 3 therapists, 2 healthcare assistants and 7 nurses. There was an average improvement in Likert confidence scales in all measured learning outcomes. All participants would recommend the course to their colleagues (average Likert scale 4.9). Qualitative feedback appraised the course for demonstration of de-escalation communication strategies, the application of mental capacity and recognition of early discharge planning. Conclusion Simulation training targeted at multi-disciplinary groups is an effective way to deliver teaching on delirium. It contextualises synergistic operation of different skills and personal accountability in influencing patient management. The challenge to its potential remains its adoption as mandatory training for various disciplines involved in care of older adults and its implementation at a wider-scale, to assure cost effectiveness.

Abstract Background Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) is associated with increased length of hospital stay, morbidity, mortality, and cost of hospitalization. Early intervention by experts from multiple areas of practice such as gastroenterology (GI), infectious diseases (ID) and surgery can be essential to optimize care and increase utilization of novel treatment modalities such as fecal microbiota transplant (FMT) and minimally invasive, colon-preserving surgical management. Methods A multi-disciplinary C. difficile action team (MD-CAT) was implemented at University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) in March 2016 to engage appropriate specialty consultants in the care of CDI patients. The MD-CAT reviews positive C. difficile tests at UMMC and provides guidance and suggestions to the primary team including optimal antibiotic treatment (for CDI and any concomitant infection), and consultant involvement including ID, surgery, and GI, when appropriate. Using retrospective chart review, CDI patient management and outcomes were compared before and after implementation of the MD-CAT. Differences in the time to consults and frequency of interventional treatment was compared using Chi-square or Wilcoxon Rank-sum test. Results We compared 48 patients with CDI in the pre-intervention with 89 patients in the post-intervention period. Demographic and clinical characteristics of the groups were similar. MD-CAT intervention was associated with frequent (73%) modification or discontinuation of concomitant antibiotics. Median time to GI and ID consults was significantly shorter in the post group (P = 0.007 and P = 0.004, respectively). Five of 89 (5.6%) of patients received FMT or colon-preserving surgical intervention in the post-intervention group compared with no patients in the pre-intervention group. There was no difference in 30-day all-cause mortality or CDI recurrence between groups. Conclusion Early, multi-disciplinary action on patients with CDI increased the proportion of patients undergoing active specialty consultation and improved use of concomitant antibiotics. A larger sample size is needed to determine the effects of such a team on other clinical outcomes. Disclosures All authors: No reported disclosures.

This design case covers a graduate course in educational software design that focuses on semester-long projects in response to client requests. The course was intended to address the need for professionals across disciplines, such as instructional design, computer science, and human-computer interaction design, to usefully collaborate on educational software projects. The ability to work on a multi-disciplinary team was fostered in several ways: through recruiting students across multiple majors; providing readings and student presentation topics related to language, processes, and techniques used by each discipline; and by scaffolding the work of multi-disciplinary student groups in a major semester-long project.

As conservator-restorers we should be „a voice of reason”, an advocate that speaks for the cultural heritage values of our built heritage. However, we are often only one voice in a large group consisting of everything from structural engineers, geologists and carpenters to economic advisors and bureaucrats. Being a conservator-restorer in such settings often turns out to be a great balancing act. On the one hand, we are supposed to protect the buildings against any intervention that will compromise its authenticity and cultural values. On the other hand, we must allow as much protective work as possible to ensure the buildings’ future. Questions that can arise for a conservator-restorer during and after discussions in multi-disciplinary groups are many. Questions that needs answering before work starts. Are the conservator-restorer and the master craftsperson really on each end of the scale in a project, or is it just that we use different words? Is it conservation ethics versus the practical view of the engineer, or can both sides be pragmatic and find a new and possibly better solution? Is it possible that the conservator-restorer and the funding body can meet in the middle, or can that jeopardize the project?

Purpose – In the context of budget constraints and the current quality crisis facing UK healthcare, the purpose of this paper is to examine the use of trans-disciplinary community groups (TCG) – an innovative and inexpensive initiative for improving patient care. Design/methodology/approach – Using an action research study, TCG was implemented within a private healthcare firm for vulnerable adults. Qualitative data were gathered over 12 months from 33 participants using depth interviews and focus groups. Findings – TCG led to improved patient activities and increased patient decision-making and confidence in self-advocacy. Key prerequisites were top management commitment, democratic leadership and employee empowerment. However, staff nurses resisted TCG because they were inclined to using managerial control and their own independent clinical judgements. Research limitations/implications – Whilst the findings from this study should not be generalized across all healthcare sectors, its results could be replicated in contexts where there is wide commitment to TCG and where managers adopt a democratic style of leadership. Researchers could take this study further by exploring the applicability of TCG in public healthcare organizations or other multi-disciplinary service contexts. Practical implications – The findings of this research paper provide policy makers and healthcare managers with practical insights on TCG and the factors that are likely to obstruct and facilitate its implementation. Originality/value – Adopting TCG could enable healthcare managers to ameliorate their services with little or no extra cost, which is especially important in a budget constraint context and the current quality crisis facing UK healthcare.

Background: Globally recommended in healthcare policy, Shared Decision-Making is also central to international policy promoting community palliative care. Yet realities of implementation by multi-disciplinary healthcare professionals who provide end-of-life care in the home are unclear. Aim: To explore multi-disciplinary healthcare professionals’ perceptions and experiences of Shared Decision-Making at end of life in the home. Design: Qualitative design using focus groups, transcribed verbatim and analysed thematically. Setting/participants: A total of 43 participants, from multi-disciplinary community-based services in one region of the United Kingdom, were recruited. Results: While the rhetoric of Shared Decision-Making was recognised, its implementation was impacted by several interconnecting factors, including (1) conceptual confusion regarding Shared Decision-Making, (2) uncertainty in the process and (3) organisational factors which impeded Shared Decision-Making. Conclusion: Multiple interacting factors influence implementation of Shared Decision-Making by professionals working in complex community settings at the end of life. Moving from rhetoric to reality requires future work exploring the realities of Shared Decision-Making practice at individual, process and systems levels.

Introduction: The aim of the study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a Multi-disciplinary team (MDT) and multi-disciplinary approach in the treatment of Chronic Pelvic Pain (CPP). Methods: The data of all consecutive patients referred for a CPP from 11/2016 to 2/2019 has been prospectively collected. The sample was divided in two groups: Group A, made by patients managed after the institution of our MDT, and Group B, made of patients managed before this date. The MDT is composed by three urogynecologists, a psychologist and a physiotherapist. All Group A patients underwent a weekly bladder instillation with dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), kinesiotherapy for trigger points and Percutaneous Tibial Nerve Stimulation for 10 consecutive weeks. Patients were asked to perform a self-treatment following the Stanford Protocol and to adhere to a specific diet. All Group B patients were managed only with DMSO instillations and a strict diet. Results: The Group A was made of 41 females and 6 males while the Group B was made of 38 females and 5 males. The Group A patients showed a statistically significant improvement in the Pelvic Pain Urgency Frequency, in the frequency times reported at the 6 months voiding diary, and a better Patient Global Impression of Improvement. Conclusions: Our data support the efficacy of the MDT in the management of CPP. The multimodal approach might represent an effective and reproducible non-invasive option to manage successfully CPP.

Background In the UK, pharmacist independent prescribers can prescribe for any condition within their clinical competence including systemic anti-cancer therapy. Competency frameworks have been developed but contain little detail on the patient assessment skills pharmacist independent prescribers require to prescribe systemic anti-cancer therapy with concern in the literature over current training on these skills. Aim To gain consensus on the patient assessment skills required by pharmacist independent prescribers prescribing systemic anti-cancer therapy for genitourinary cancer (prostate and renal) and lung cancer across National Health Service Scotland. Method Two phases were performed to generate patient assessment skill consensus. Initially, the Nominal Group Technique was performed within a local cancer network by discussion and participant ranking within genitourinary and lung cancer multi-disciplinary teams. Where consensus was achieved, patient assessment skills were carried forward to try to achieve national (National Health Service Scotland) consensus using a two-round Delphi questionnaire. Results Of the 27 patient assessment skills, consensus was gained for 21 and 23 patient assessment skills in the genitourinary and lung Nominal Group Technique groups, respectively. Within the genitourinary and lung national groups, 13/21 and 18/23 patient assessment skills were agreed as required for a pharmacist independent prescriber to prescribe systemic anti-cancer therapy in genitourinary and lung cancer, respectively. Eight common patient assessment skills were identified as core skills. Reasons for not reaching consensus included pharmacist independent prescriber competence, knowledge, skills and the roles and responsibilities of pharmacist independent prescribers within the multi-disciplinary team. Conclusion We identified the core and specific patient assessment skills required to prescribe systemic anti-cancer therapy within two tumour groups. Further work is necessary to develop patient assessment skill competency frameworks, training and assessment methods and to redefine the roles of pharmacist independent prescribers within the multi-disciplinary team.

Collaborative research and writing across disciplines and institutions happens frequently in discipline-based research. However, opportunities for cross-collaborative scholarship in teaching and learning is limited in comparison (Kahn et al., 2013; MacKenzie and Myers, 2012). Yet the value of larger scale, team-based approaches to scholarly writing is well recognised in building networks and in providing a deeper understanding of a topic as informed by multi-disciplinary and/or international perspectives (Marquis et al., 2014; 2015; Matthews et al., 2017). It is for these reasons that the International Collaborative Writing Groups (ICWG) program that crystallises around the International Society for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (ISSOTL) conference is so valuable. ICWGs bring together academics, professional staff, and students to co-author learning and teaching articles on topics of shared interest. The aims are two-fold: 1) to build capacity of participants to work and write with international collaborators, and 2) to contribute meaningful and topical perspectives to the SoTL literature.

Roland Bal analyzes the strategies his research group developed to deal with the interlinked dynamics of research evaluation in a multi-disciplinary institutional environment characteristic of much STS research. Scholars in such environments constantly need to navigate and negotiate the standards of evaluation, in complex choreographies of cooperation and competition with other disciplinary groups. Bal describes strategies his group has successfully used, and how these strategies have both shifted the way research quality is assessed within the department as well as changed the way his group works and publishes. In conclusion, he describes performance management systems and research practices as co-constituted and calls for a debate on which forms of evaluation infrastructures allow for better ways of doing research in STS.

In this paper, we present an approach to collaborative multi-disciplinary teaching as a method of integrating ethical reasoning into an applied science curriculum. Bringing together two faculty—one from computer engineering and one from science, technology, and society—to co-teach a two-semester upper-level sequence on holistic problem solving focused on “privacy in a connected world,” we model ethical reasoning as a habit of mind. We argue that this practice of modeling through multi-disciplinary teaching demonstrates for students that ethical reasoning is an intrinsic part of addressing complex sociotechnical problems. Through such modeling, we guide students toward developing ethical reasoning as a habit of mind that is relevant and important in their technical work. Drawing on analysis of student work, we show the evolution of two student groups across two semesters as they learn how to address and integrate ethics into their analysis of sociotechnical problems and solutions.

Aims and MethodTo describe the attitudes of the professionals of a multi-disciplinary crisis intervention service (CIS) towards the service they provide. To establish whether there are differences in attitudes between the different professional disciplines involved. A questionnaire was mailed to all the professionals working in the Barnet CIS (n=94). Differences were analysed using the Kruskal–Wallis test.ResultsThe overall response rate was 84%. Statistically significant differences were found between the different disciplines in 10 of the 37 questions (27%) on the questionnaire. Opinions differed most on issues of safety and acceptance of clinical responsibility.Clinical ImplicationsDespite general ag reement on most issues, we found differences of opinion in important areas such as arrangements for team safety and clinical responsibility. These differences may create tensions within the multi-disciplinary groups and may influence the attitudes of professionals to crisis work. Measures need to be taken to address these issues in order to improve morale and staff satisfaction.

Intersectoral actions in the sport-for-development field constitute a pre-condition for the implementation of sport-based interventions. At an operational level, the multi-professional group is the tool through which intersectoral collaboration may successfully achieve its aims. Despite the prominent role of the group, this topic is under-researched in terms of understanding intersectoral actions in the sport-for-development field. By applying a psycho-sociological perspective, our research explores the role of the multi-professional group as a limit/resource for sport-for-development workers that operate with vulnerable youth. Following a phenomenological interpretive approach, 12 practitioners (six sport workers and six social workers) participated in semi-structured interviews to explore the role of multi-professional groups as a resource/limit in working with socially vulnerable youth through sport. The results indicate that, in the participants’ experience, belonging to a multi-professional group is a meaningful resource to trigger reflexivity, promote collaboration and integrate their different professions. The interviews highlighted the positive potential of this tool to address the challenges that emerge when working with socially vulnerable youth, including the management of negative emotions, unexpected events and the relationship with young people. Some interviews also suggested that the presence of multiple professions, under certain circumstances, may be a risk when working with youth. These findings have significant value for programme design, strategy and management as they show the value of trans-disciplinary practices as an agenda for social inclusion through sport.

Abstract Geriatric-orthopaedic co-management models have been demonstrated to improve patient outcomes, but are typically implemented in closed, non-pluralistic medial systems. The Cedars-Sinai Geriatric Fracture Program (GFP) was developed through collaboration amongst a multi-disciplinary group. Cedars-Sinai is an academic medical center with a pluralistic medical staff that includes faculty, several hospitalist groups, and private practitioners. The GFP was introduced in July 2018 as a quality improvement pilot to provide standardized treatment for geriatric fracture patients. We hypothesized GFP enrollment would reduce time to surgery (TTS) and length of stay (LOS). Geriatric fracture patients were prospectively enrolled from July -December 2018. The Wilcoxon Rank- Sum test was used to compare TTS and LOS between the two patient groups. A p < 0.05 was considered significant. 190 operative fractures in patients over 65 years-old were prospectively followed.56 (30%) were enrolled in the GFP, 54 (28%) were admitted to other hospitalist groups (OH), and 80 (42%) were managed by their primary care physician (PCP). There were no demographic differences between groups. Patients enrolled in the GFP had a significantly shorter LOS compared to the OH and PCP groups (4 days v 5 days v 5 days, p = 0.039) as well as a significantly shorter TTS (19.7hrs v 22.4 hrs vs 23.3 hrs, p = 0.037). Our data shows that a multi-disciplinary geriatric fracture program can be successfully implemented in a complex pluralistic environment resulting in improved patient metrics. Adherence to evidence-based protocols and close multidisciplinary teamwork are critical to program success.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine the utility of a redesigned course assessment in a required, introductory Master of Public Health (MPH) course to demonstrate competency achievement through practical application. School of public health curricula are informed by competency-based education (CBE) to prepare students for the field. This is a challenge in introductory courses as traditional assessments do not translate into practical application of knowledge. Design/methodology/approach – This retrospective post-test-only evaluation examined a practice-based, multi-disciplinary assessment utilized in Fall 2014 (n = 63 students). Web-based surveys were administered three months after the course to participating students (n = 33), the teaching team or teaching teams (n = 7) and organization representatives (n = 3) to evaluate the utility of the assessment. Questions were analyzed descriptively using chi-square tests, where applicable responses were compared across groups. Findings – Results indicate that a practice-based assessment in an introductory MPH course may enhance student learning by fostering deeper appreciation and application of course content while more closely reflecting the collaborative, multi-disciplinary and problem-solving nature of practice. The assessment may also increase the depth of competency achievement and career preparedness. Practical implications – Institutions that are guided by CBE, train students for multi-disciplinary practice and are impacted by the changing landscape of the field may want to consider course assessments that mimic practice to best prepare students. Originality/value – Course assessments should be evaluated to ensure they appropriately measure competency achievement. This evaluation provides multiple perspectives on the process and outcome of a practice-based course assessment.

Background: Self-inflicted wrist lacerations have the potential to lead to crippling sequelae and repeated suicidal attempt. To obtain good results, we have treated self-inflicted wrist lacerations using a multidisciplinary team - emergency, hand surgery, psychiatry, and rehabilitation. This study aims to review features of this type of injuries and suggest multidisciplinary team approach as an optimal treatment. Methods: Our multidisciplinary approach can be summarized as follows: initial evaluation, psychological interview, surgery, and rehabilitation. The medical records including wound features, injured structures and psychological data were reviewed retrospectively. Assessment of functional outcomes, and comparative analysis of various psychological parameters were conducted. Results: Most patients resulted in excellent or good functional outcomes. Five patients reattempted wrist cutting with suicidal intent during follow-up. Only 21.3% patients had a suicidal intent and it was not associated with injury severity and functional recovery. Alcohol ingestion and presence of associated injuries was significant different between severity groups. Presence of suicidal intent was irrelevant to injury severity and functional recovery, but relevant to alcohol ingestion, presence of associated injuries and presence of psychiatric diagnosis. Conclusions: In order to minimize catastrophic disability and repeated suicide attempts, a balanced multidisciplinary approach is one of the best methods to obtain excellent functional outcomes and prevent repeated injuries in patients with self-inflicted wrist lacerations.

Bangime is a language isolate, which has not been proven to be genealogically related to any other language family, spoken in Central-Eastern Mali. Its speakers, the Bangande, claim affiliation with the Dogon languages and speakers that surround them throughout a cliff range known as the Bandiagara Escarpment. However, recent genetic research has shown that the Bangande are genetically distant from the Dogon and other groups. Furthermore, the Bangande people represent a genetic isolate. Despite the geographic isolation of the Bangande people, evidence of language contact is apparent in the Bangime language. We find a plethora of shared vocabulary with neighboring Atlantic, Dogon, Mande, and Songhai language groups. To address the problem of when and whence this vocabulary emerged in the language, we use a computer-assisted, multidisciplinary approach to investigate layers of contact and inheritance in Bangime. We start from an automated comparison of lexical data from languages belonging to different language families in order to obtain a first account on potential borrowing candidates in our sample. In a second step, we use specific interfaces to refine and correct the computational findings. The revised sample is then investigated quantitatively and qualitatively by focusing on vocabularies shared exclusively between specific languages. We couch our results within archeological and historical research from Central-Eastern Mali more generally and propose a scenario in which the Bangande formed part of the expansive Mali Empire that encompassed most of West Africa from the 13th to the 16th centuries. We consider our methods to represent a novel approach to the investigation of a language and population isolate from multiple perspectives using innovative computer-assisted technologies.

Purpose – There is a general consensus that healthcare for people with intellectual disabilities should be provided by multi-disciplinary teams. Within a forensic setting, recommendations are often made for separate or “parallel” forensic teams, operating independently of generic mental health or intellectual disability teams. An alternative to this model is an “integrated” service, where specialist forensic clinicians work within the general intellectual disability service, to provide support for clients with forensic needs. For clients with intellectual disabilities and forensic needs, there may be advantages to providing access to a wider multi-disciplinary team, through the application of an integrated model. The purpose of this paper is to illustrate the working of an integrated forensic service within a learning disability team, to identify positive aspects of this model, and how potential shortcomings may be overcome. Design/methodology/approach – Literature review, description of service outline with case example. Findings – Although some studies have compared parallel and integrated forensic models within mental health services, there are no evaluations that compare models of forensic services for individuals with intellectual disabilities. However, specific advantages of an integrated model may include availability of multi-disciplinary clinicians, development of forensic skills across wider groups of clinicians, reduction in stigma and avoidance of delay in transfer of care between services. In addition, in areas with smaller populations, parallel services may not be feasible due to low case numbers. Originality/value – There has been no formal evaluation of parallel vs integrated forensic services within an intellectual disability setting. However, the authors describe a fully integrated service and suggest means by which the potential shortcomings of an integrated model may be overcome.

Background Concussion patients who experience prolonged symptoms may benefit from evidence-based, physician-led, inter-disciplinary care. The success of this approach may depend on a patient’s understanding and adherence to a complex, multi-modal recovery process. Objectives We have developed a novel clinical care guide for post-injury concussion caretermed the “Treatment Passport,” intended to facilitate greater communication and understanding among patients, healthcare providers, family members, teachers, and coaches. This study aims to assess whether the Treatment Passport increases patients’ understanding of their concussion care in an inter-disciplinary setting. Methods Patients presenting with sports- or recreation-related concussions were randomly assigned to the intervention ( n = 15) or control ( n = 18) group. Subjects in the control group received physician-led, inter-disciplinary care, while subjects in the intervention group received the same care, but with the addition of the Treatment Passport. After four weeks of treatment, participants in both groups completed an 11-question survey to assess their understanding of inter-disciplinary concussion care. Results The median age of participants was 20 (range 10–63). Participants in the intervention group showed significant increases in their understanding of inter-disciplinary concussion care when compared to control group members. This was reflected in a 2.1–2.8-fold greater understanding of the cognitive, physical, and vestibular aspects of their care. In addition, 86.7% of control group participants indicated they believed that the Treatment Passport would have helped with their concussion recovery journey. Conclusion The Treatment Passport is a novel clinical tool that facilitates the delivery of standardized inter-disciplinary concussion care by increasing patient-caregiver communication and understanding.

This paper describes the development of the Family Life Education Programme, an innovative group approach to parenting issues. The programme aims to (i) utilise the strengths of a multidisciplinary allied health team and (ii) to avoid focusing on the limited issues of child management and discipline. Previous styles of parent education groups are discussed, together with their shortcomings and the authors’ frustrations with such approaches. The rationale for the format of the new programme is described, and the detailed structure outlined. Two innovations are highlighted. Firstly, the programme focuses on issues from both the child and parent perspective (eg, child's play/parents’ recreation). Secondly, the six-week programme uses professionals from various disciplines as weekly consultants, while one member of the team provides week-to-week continuity as an anchor. The programme is evaluated in terms of the impact on the multi-disciplinary team, and the feedback from participants. It is argued that the Family Life Education Programme offers a balanced approach to the many issues confronting parents of young children and it could be implemented not only within multi-disciplinary teams, but also co-operatively across agencies.

Background and Aims Sleep disturbances are a severe problem among patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD). By evaluating sleep quality in mild-to-moderate AD patients, this study aimed to assess the effects of multi-disciplinary team (MDT) in reducing the incidence of adverse reactions of AD patients. The reduction in the incidence of adverse reactions to predict multi-disciplinary team (MDT) treatment effects. Methods and Results This study included 60 mild-to-moderate AD patients with sleep problems when hospitalized in Huzhou Third Municipal Hospital. The patients were randomly distributed into two groups, routine and MDT treatments. The cognitive functions, sleep conditions, and psycho-behavioral symptoms were compared between both the groups. Cognitive function declined significantly between pretherapy and follow-up in the routine treatment group (MMSE: t = −7.961, P < 0.001; MoCA: t = −4.672, P < 0.001). There was a significant decline in drowsiness in the MDT group compared to that in the routine treatment group (χ2 = 4.320, P = 0.038). Sleep quality improved significantly during the follow-up in the MDT treatment group (t = 6.098, P < 0.001). The results of the Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD) and Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAMA) among family caregivers (FCGs) demonstrated that MDT treatment could alleviate caregivers' depression (t = −2.867, P = 0.042), and routine treatment can worsen their anxiety (t = 3.258, P = 0.003). Conclusion The MDT treatment method as an effective and meaningful therapy can help mitigate the suffering of patients with AD and FCGs.

The development of a coherent system of criteria and indicators (C&I) requires collaboration and communication among scientists, government, the public, certifying organizations, and the forest industry. It also demands the integration of knowledge from many fields of study, which is foreign to the disciplinary nature of most forestry research. There needs to be greater effort to link groups of indicators and to favour those that are assimilative in nature. Modelling tools adapted to a multi-disciplinary approach and collaborative development will help to integrate knowledge from various fields and institutions. Specific challenges for implementation of C&I have been identified, including: leadership and vision in the evolution towards sustainable forest management (SFM); linking of grass-roots and higher level C&I initiatives; streamlining and co-ordinating different certification initiatives and agencies; technology transfer; and collaboration among disciplines. Key words: criteria, indicators, sustainability, forest management, integration

This article collates and synthesizes the discussion results of a collaborative research exercise, known as a ‘co-creation session’, formed of a multi-disciplinary group of extended reality (XR) researchers and practitioners. The session sought to develop and theorize the concept of ‘transformative technologies for good’ in creative, applied and clinical contexts. Notions of ‘cutting-edge’ practice were visited from a critical standpoint; participants established that innovation, when measured in terms of social good, challenges technological and economic paradigms of progress. Conversation between participants centred on four key areas: skills and knowledge for effective XR research, appropriate methods and sites for diffusion of XR research, the future of the field, and the possible contributions of XR and associated research to problems arising from COVID-19. The session offered further insights into research design related to composition of participant groups in terms of disciplinary knowledge, activity design, and remote digital interfaces.

Abstract KEY MESSAGE Standardization of care for subspecialty patients require centralization and support across multi-disciplinary groups within the Kaiser Permanente medical group, which is a large health maintenance organization (HMO) in the United States. BACKGROUND Prior to the development of a Pediatric Neuro-Oncology program, Southern California Kaiser Permanente pediatric neuro-oncology patients were routinely referred to respective regional academic centers for consultation. The process was not standard across the region, resulting in additional costs and differences in treatment recommendations, potentially affecting outcomes. METHODS A Pediatric Neuro-Oncology program was established, July 2017, based at the Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Medical Center (LAMC), consisting of pediatric neuro-oncology, pediatric neurosurgery, pediatric neuro-radiology, pediatric radiation oncology, and pediatric neuro-oncology case management. RESULTS A Pediatric Neuro-Oncology tumor board was established to meet on a bi-monthly basis. Pediatric neuro-oncology patients across the Southern California now have their magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) reviewed by the same pediatric neuro radiologists. Neuropathology is standardized and sent to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and reviewed at the molecular neuropathology tumor board attended by the pediatric neuro-oncologist. Cases discussions regarding the patients include the regional pediatric neurosurgeons, the pediatric radiation oncologists, and the pediatric neuro-oncologist, and treatment plans are recommended and recorded by the case manager. CONCLUSIONS Centralization of care has allowed for more consistent and standard care across the Southern California Region, but requires support from multi-disciplinary groups.

Abstract Elder abuse is mistreatment of an older adult by a caregiver or another person in a position with an expectation of trust. Adversely affecting as many as 10% of community-dwelling older adults in the US, it may include physical abuse, sexual abuse, psychological abuse, financial exploitation and neglect. Mental illness and substance use by caregivers, family members and victims themselves have been described as risk factors for multiple forms of elder abuse in prior cross-sectional analyses but the impact on these cases is poorly understood. To explore this association we conducted a focus group using a semi-structured format involving an inter-disciplinary group of elder abuse professionals that are part of the New York City Elder Abuse Center enhanced multi-disciplinary team (EMDT) in Staten Island, New York. Focus group participants reported that opioid, cocaine, cannabis and alcohol use is common among perpetrators of elder abuse, especially in cases of financial mistreatment, verbal and physical abuse. Other potential consequences included eviction of the older adult victim, co-dependency and involvement of the older adult in the procurement of illicit substances, and substance use by the older adult. Respondents specifically expressed concerns that the opioid epidemic, including rising heroin use, may be changing the frequency and nature of elder abuse, and that case investigations offer an opportunity to facilitate referrals for formal substance use disorder assessment and treatment. Future work includes additional focus groups and quantitative analysis to clarify the intersection between substance use and elder abuse and inform intervention and prevention strategies.

Research datasets include all kinds of objects, from web pages to sensor data, and originate in every domain. Concerns with data generated in large projects and well-funded research areas are centered on their exploration and analysis. For data in the long tail, the main issues are still how to get data visible, satisfactorily described, preserved, and searchable. Our work aims to promote data publication in research institutions, considering that researchers are the core stakeholders and need straightforward workflows, and that multi-disciplinary tools can be designed and adapted to specific areas with a reasonable effort. For small groups with interesting datasets but not much time or funding for data curation, we have to focus on engaging researchers in the process of preparing data for publication, while providing them with measurable outputs. In larger groups, solutions have to be customized to satisfy the requirements of more specific research contexts. We describe our experience at the University of Porto in two lines of enquiry. For the work with long-tail groups we propose general-purpose tools for data description and the interface to multi-disciplinary data repositories. For areas with larger projects and more specific requirements, namely wind infrastructure, sensor data from concrete structures and marine data, we define specialized workflows. In both cases, we present a preliminary evaluation of results and an estimate of the kind of effort required to keep the proposed infrastructures running. The tools available to researchers can be decisive for their commitment. We focus on data preparation, namely on dataset organization and metadata creation. For groups in the long tail, we propose Dendro, an open-source research data management platform, and explore automatic metadata creation with LabTablet, an electronic laboratory notebook. For groups demanding a domain-specific approach, our analysis has resulted in the development of models and applications to organize the data and support some of their use cases. Overall, we have adopted ontologies for metadata modeling, keeping in sight metadata dissemination as Linked Open Data.

A more holistic definition of patients’ recovery from eating disorders (EDs) highlights that well-being interventions linked to self-compassion are under-researched and under-utilised. Staff burnout is also common in ED units (EDUs), linked to difficult relationships with patients and poor self-care, and is not well addressed. Therefore we piloted a series of joint well-being workshops to target these issues. Joint workshops were offered to patients (n = 55) and the multi-disciplinary team MDT (n = 34) in adult ED wards over two years. Experiences were evaluated quantitively and qualitatively. Mood post-workshops increased significantly for both groups (patients: p < 0.001, r = 0.49; MDT: z = 3.043, p = 0.002, r = 0.41), with the feeling that they deserved to take time for self-care (patients: z = 2.419, p = 0.016, r = 0.31); MDT: z = 2.814, p = 0.005, r = 0.38). Workshops were found to be enjoyable and highly relevant to well-being, but less useful by patients. Thematic analysis identified six themes: Enjoyment, recovery and well-being, relationships, content, structure and future ideas. Both groups experienced improved mood and increased enjoyment and awareness of well-being. Patient isolation was addressed, and the staff experienced stress reduction and increased productivity. Both groups experienced improved relationships.

The efficacy of ERCP in detecting and treating post-laparoscopic cholecystectomy problems was examined in a series of consecutive patients undergoing directed examination of the biliary tree over a two-year period. Three major diagnostic groups were identified: leaks and bile duct injuries (n = 9), retained common bile duct stones (n = 18), and post-cholecystectomy pain (n = 13). These diagnostic groups differed in degree of abnormal bilirubin (p = .004) and time between surgery and ERCP (p = .0005). Diagnosis of a post-operative complication was successful in 92% of attempted cases. Therapy was successful in 92% of attempted cases. Three patients developed mild pancreatitis as a result of ERCP. This series underscores the efficacy of a multi-disciplinary approach to problems which occur after laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

AbstractAim:To investigate whether information about the size of an oral tumour influences the multi-disciplinary team's judgement about the quality of life of head and neck cancer patients.Method:Using a between-group design, two groups of health care professionals rated a hypothetical patient on 20 outcome variables. The patient description was identical for both groups, except for the tumour size. Results:Comparison of variable ratings revealed only three significant differences between the groups' predictions and no consistency within conditions, suggesting that the participants held few common assumptions about the impact of tumour size on a range of patient experiences. Conclusion:The lack of agreement amongst the health care professionals suggests that, where humane judgements are used in treatment decisions for head and neck cancer patients, these may be random and inconsistent. Consequently, patients should have a direct input into treatment decisions, via formalised quality of life data.

BACKGROUND: Intensive, multi-disciplinary, rehabilitation programs for patients with Parkinson’s disease (PWPs) have shown to be effective. However, most programs are based on in-patient service, which is expensive. OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate the feasibility of a multidisciplinary, intensive, outpatient rehabilitation program (MIOR) for moderate to advanced Parkinson’s Disease (H&Y≥2). METHOD: The MIOR program takes place at a community rehabilitation center (‘Ezra Le’Marpe’), 3 times a week, 5 hours, 8 weeks, and includes 20 PWPs in each cycle. The multi-disciplinary team includes physical, occupational, speech and hydro therapists. Additional activities include, social work groups, boxing, dancing and bridge. RESULTS: Data was collected retroactively for the first two years. Data analysis includes 158 patient files who completed the program (mean disease duration 10.1±6 and mean H&Y stage 2.8±0.67). Assessments were performed at the beginning and end of the intervention. Positive results were collected: improvement in number of falls (p < 0.0001), Functional Independence Measure (p < 0.0001), quality of life (p < 0.01), balance (p < 0.0001), upper limb function (p < 0.0001) and paragraph reading vocal intensity (p < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: MIOR is a feasible program, showing positive results in moderate to advanced PWP’s, improving quality of life, daily function, and motor performance. The current outcomes demonstrate feasibility of MIOR in addition to medical treatment.

AbstractOnly a minority of adults of all age groups experience difficulty with their finances and affairs, due to the combined effect of their diminished competence and their social circumstances in placing them at risk, from themselves, or from family, friends or others (well-meaning or otherwise). If unable to manage independently or with informal assistance, formal intervention (guardianship) may be required. Neither the traditional formality of courts, nor the tests and clinical processes of medicine are well equipped to judge this in the abstract. Informal (family) models have their place but they (and other options) pose ethical difficulties. A more practical approach is that taken by Australia's multi-disciplinary panels.

The authors present a case report of a 64-year old warfarinised patient who underwent forefoot surgery and developed a subsequent post-operative infection with combinations of antibiotics, leading to excessive anticoagulation and an adverse drug event. From reviewing both local and national guidance, careful monitoring is mandatory, dosing adjustments and pre-emptive dose reduction might also be needed. Consultation within the wider multi-disciplinary network will be central to decision making and implementing safety netting measures.

Introduction. Dynamic changes of the labour market and blurring of the boundaries of professional functions of a modern expert dictate the need for trans-professionalism development. Trans-professionalism development involves such meta qualities as social and professional mobility, communicativeness, developed emotional intelligence, innovation, tolerance for uncertainty, etc. All members of multi-disciplinary projects have to possess the listed above characteristics. Joint activity of several professional groups requires the participants of the project to possess the following skills and abilities: search for the consistent principles of work; “common language”; coherence of various abilities, caused by specifics of their occupation, to differentiate duties and to work harmoniously in neutral spheres; mastering of new roles in the cooperation process. The aimof the publication is to present a product of structural-functional modelling which is the socio-humanitarian educational platform of trans-professionalism development of professionals involved in multi-disciplinary projects (hereinafter the “Platform”).Methodology and research methods. The authors used a comparative analysis and generalization of the models of the multi-professional relations offered by foreign and Russian authors. The methodological framework of the research was based on the following approaches to the design of the Platform: multidimensional, trans-disciplinary, network, design, nonlinear synergetic, and transpective competency-based.Results and scientific novelty. The structural and functional model of the Platform has been developed and described. The Platform model has a block-modular organization. It consists of three blocks: basic (invariant), poly professional and functional. The technological basis of the Platform is social and humanitarian educational technologies. The authors highlighted the principles of the Platform. In the present study, the authors substantiated the importance of the development of the structural and functional model of the Platform in terms of additional education. The presented model of the Platform accumulates the results of theoretical and applied research in the field of vocational education. For the first time, different models of multi-professional relations (from inter-professional to trans-professional) have been used in a single course of additional education. The development of adjacent areas of activity is a stage for the development of distant, non-contiguous areas. Interactive development of these spheres is facilitated by immersion of listeners in the poly professional communicative environments. The result of the implementation of the Platform is a trans-professional project of the full life cycle.Practical significance. The results of the study can be partially or fully applied in the system of additional education.

The paper analyzes the water quality of hydrological resources in the wider area of Tara National Park (NP Tara) in Serbia and the opinions of the local community and the national park visitors about the grade of the possible damage. The pollution level of the Drina River at the Bajina Bašta hydrological station was analyzed using the Water Pollution Index. The results showed that water quality corresponded to classes II (clean water) or III (moderately polluted water) and revealed the presence of organic pollution. In addition, using a survey combined with field research, the perceptions of local inhabitants and national park visitors related to environmental pollution were analyzed. The community believed that tourism does not cause significant damage to the environment. However, the older and more educated groups of residents and visitors had a more critical perception of the environmental impact of tourism. The results also indicated that the perceptions of visitors were mostly in agreement with measured water quality in the Drina River. The findings of this study have important implications for the management of protected areas and future policies related to national parks.

For the last three years, I have been part of a team of multi-disciplinary faculty that holds a weeklong workshop each semester for approximately twenty teachers. These teachers, migrating to our cozy space in the library from all corners of campus, have applied—they get paid a modest sum, which is not nothing—to attend our workshop in the hopes of improving their ability to integrate writing assignments into their courses. The workshops are part of a larger initiative, Improving Disciplinary Writing, which was borne out of a needs assessment from our regional assessment body. It is designed to bring together faculty, through workshops and grants, to think collectively about how writing gets taught and ought to be taught differently across and within disciplines. And what we see time and time again is that although each group of twenty teachers is new each semester, and although the ranks consistently vary from adjunct (sessional) to full professor, and although some work in musty chemistry buildings and some in obscure art buildings and some in sleek see-through engineering buildings, the disembodied echoes of frustrations and complaints and discovery and hope and solace from groups past get re-vocalized by groups present. As facilitators, we are not flustered by this fact; rather, we find our own solace in the connection and camaraderie through shared experience happening across disciplines and spaces on campus.

IntroductionThis is the first comprehensive evaluation of Burnout Syndrome across the UK Intensive Care Unit workforce and in all three Burnout Syndrome domains: Emotional Exhaustion, Depersonalisation and lack of Personal Accomplishment.MethodsA questionnaire was emailed to UK Intensive Care Society members, incorporating the 22-item Maslach Burnout Inventory Human Services Survey for medical personnel. Burnout Syndrome domain scores were stratified by ‘risk’. Associations with gender, profession and age-group were explored.ResultsIn total, 996 multi-disciplinary responses were analysed. For Emotional Exhaustion, females scored higher and nurses scored higher than doctors. For Depersonalisation, males and younger respondents scored higher.ConclusionApproximately one-third of Intensive Care Unit team-members are at ‘high-risk’ for Burnout Syndrome, though there are important differences according to domain, gender, age-group and profession. This data may encourage a more nuanced understanding of Burnout Syndrome and more personalised strategies for our heterogeneous workforce.

Purpose – The purpose of this study is to examine how different disciplines and sectors approach creativity, and how to improve cross-domain collaboration efficiency. Creativity is one of the most important factors that hugely contributes to the growth of economy, and the key to the modern organisation’s survival. There are considerable differences between disciplines regarding how they approach creativity since each discipline has a methodology which is designed to develop new ideas. Specialisation of disciplines can create difficulties when they start to interact in collaborations. Differences between sectors (Industry, Academia, Arts and Public) in definition of creativity, creativity measurement, management and collaboration motivators can hinder cross-sector collaboration efficiency. Design/methodology/approach – A questionnaire was distributed over the Internet, and statistical tests were performed to find differences between groups how they view various dimensions of creativity. Findings – By analysing various disciplines, the study revealed significant differences between the reward system, the creativity measurement, the required management support and the way how various disciplines solve complex problems. Sector analysis revealed significant differences in creativity quantification, personal traits, sensitivity to idea ownership, composition and size of the ideal team, communication and incentives to increase creativity. Research limitations/implications – In this study, only Internet users were sampled, and the majority of respondent were from Europe working in academic environment. Practical implications – Misalignment of forces between disciplines causes inefficient cross- and multi-disciplinary collaborations, while inter-sector misalignment results in unproductive inter-disciplinary and trans-disciplinary teamwork. Special emphasis has to be placed on external factor, creativity measurement and collaboration motivator adjustment that were the most misaligned across the analysed groups. Originality/value – The study indicates that to increase collaboration, efficiency factors that were scrutinised in this project have to be aligned across disciplines and sectors.

AbstractIn this mini-review a number of novel outcomes, originating from studies in the field of PAMAM dendrimers, are presented and discussed. Owing to the multi-disciplinary nature of dendrimer chemistry it seems important to focus on the relevant topical research of PAMAM dendrimers, including their function, toxicity, surface modifications, and also possible new applications of these spherical polymers. We also consider the possibilities of specific functionalisation of PAMAM dendrimers — both novel ideas and those that have already been reported; as well as their cell-mediated effects (toxic and non-toxic). Then the reactivity of dendrimers’ terminal groups, and their anticipated protective role against modifications of biomacromolecules, are discussed with regard to future developments in biomedical research.
