Remanufacturing is an industrial process that turns used products into new ones with the same quality, functionality, and warranty as new products; it is a critical element for realizing a resource-efficient manufacturing industry and a circular economy. Remanufacturing may involve adding new and better functionality to used products, such as adding more wear-resistant materials to the surface or new sensor systems. Remanufacturing has been undertaken for products such as: automobile parts, machinery, photocopiers, single-use cameras, furniture, and turbine components, etc. It is generally superior to material recycling in terms of energy and material savings. Our project aims to develop technologies necessary for the promotion of remanufacturing and to establish a cooperative network related to remanufacturing. As technical development items, our aim is to develop methods to assess the reliability of parts/components, develop technologies to restore deteriorated metal surfaces of used products, introduce production management methods for remanufacturing, and design a circulation system to retain the added values of products. In this paper, we introduce an outline of the project and present some preliminary results. This paper shows the possibility to quantitatively evaluate the carbide distribution (size and density) of the carburized surface of a gear, and also shows the potential to repair materials exposed to a high-temperature oxidative atmosphere by Pr-Ir coating technology.

“The Forum of Global Multi-Value Circulation” is the name of forum on Circular Economy in Japan. This forum was launched at June 2018 to discuss and exchange the information on the movement towards the circular economy. Companies that handles production, supply, distribution, and circulation in Japan join the Forum of Global Multi-Value Circulation. In addition, leading universities and national research institutes also join it. The first part of this paper introduces the concept of Global Multi-Value Circulation. In addition, as results of the discussion of the forum, the focus of attention in the concept of Circular Economy are reviewed. The importance of resource efficiency through the boundary between the Eco-sphere and the Techno-sphere, along with retained value, servicizing and platform, has been insisted.

According to biogas digester heated by circulation of water heated by solar cell, three modes of hot water circulation dynamic system (one-stage cycle, multi-stage cycle, and continuous cycle) were proposed to reduce operating costs and optimize the operation. The results obtained showed that multi-stage cycle had a clear advantage in improving operating efficiency, the heat transfer of which was 41.57KJ, much higher than 7.21KJ of one-stage cycle and 2.20KJ of continuous cycle. A model was built to simulate the overall process of heat dissipation in comparison with what was obtained from the conventional experiments. Both the simulation and the experimental measurement data showed that multi-stage circulation dynamic system operated well.

Agricultural product circulation is an appropriate way to optimize the distribution of agricultural resources and maintain food safety. The seasonality of agriculture leads to seasonal variations in agricultural product circulation. Previous studies constructed origin–destination networks based on annual statistics to investigate the static structure of agricultural product circulation networks from a single view, failing to capture the seasonal and multi-dimensional characteristics in agricultural product circulation. This study presents a multi-view analytical framework used to investigate the seasonal characteristics of an agricultural product circulation network. First, agricultural product circulation networks in different seasons were constructed with mass freight trajectory data through trajectory mining technology. Then, the seasonal characteristics of agricultural product circulation were, respectively, analyzed from a macro-view (networks), meso-view (edges) and micro-view (nodes). A case study was conducted in Beijing, China. It is argued that: (1) The presented method for extracting agricultural trip chains based on massive freight trajectories is feasible for the construction of agricultural product circulation networks. (2) The agricultural product circulation networks in four seasons exhibit an obvious hierarchical and radial structure. South China has a higher network density in winter and spring, whereas northeast and northwest China are the opposite. (3) A total of 80% of the linkage strength is concentrated, on average, in 35.3% of city-pairs in four seasons, where the agglomeration effect and hub status of the linking cities is more prominent in summer and autumn. (4) A total of 316 cities form Beijing agricultural product circulation networks, 48.1% of which are mainly served by Beijing agricultural product circulation in winter and spring, which is 2.7 times more than cities served in summer and autumn. These findings extend the scientific understanding of the agricultural product supply chain from a dynamic and multi-dimensional view, which provides essential information for optimizing sustainable agri-food systems and ensuring food security.

Decadal climate predictions have the main feature of being initialized, hence lying midway between initialized seasonal forecasts and forced multi-decadal projections. The North Atlantic is among the few places where decadal variations are considered potentially predictable with an added value of the initialization due to the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), which exhibits slow multi-annual fluctuations. A correct representation of this process is fundamental to skillfully predict climate variability in the Northern Hemisphere at these timescales. In this thesis, AMOC predictability is investigated in the CMCC-CM2-SR5 (CMCC Coupled Model v2 in standard resolution) decadal system. The ability of the model to forecast the AMOC is evaluated in both a deterministic and probabilistic way, comparing a set of hindcasts initialized between 1960 and 2018 with observations, ocean reconstructions, and a non-initialized historical simulation. Special attention is devoted to the analysis of AMOC biases. Indeed, it is documented that predictions suffer from initial shocks and tend to drift towards the model's equilibrium state. We find that the potential predictability of the system is high up to a ten-year forecast range, but this is not reflected in the AMOC transport forecast skill, which undergoes a sudden reduction after the first year. An interesting finding is that the drift of the model is start-date dependent: we leverage on this feature to propose a new post-processing approach for the drift adjustment, different from the usual one in which drifts are treated as stationary. The experimented approach significantly increases the forecast skill. Furthermore, we identify a reduction of convection in the Labrador Sea, a feature that previous studies linked with the model drift of the AMOC. Further research with an increased ensemble size of both initialized and historical simulations and with a multi-model set is envisaged.

Les enjeux en modélisation du climat sont énormes du fait de la forte demande sociétale, en particulier sur la quantification des incertitudes des projections climatiques régionales et leurs conséquences sur l'évaluation de la vulnérabilité de nos sociétés dans un contexte de réchauffement climatique. Du point de vue climatique, la région méditerranéenne constitue une zone de transition entre les climats semi-arides au sud et les climats tempérés au nord, sous l'influence des circulations synoptiques des latitudes moyennes et de la variabilité climatique tropicale. A petite échelle, l'orographie complexe de la région méditerranéenne est un acteur majeur de la perturbation de l'écoulement synoptique, à l'origine de la formation de structures de méso-échelle pouvant évoluer en systèmes météorologiques extrêmes à fort impact tels que tempêtes, précipitations intenses et crues. La contribution des processus de très fines échelles et leurs interactions non-linéaires avec les processus de la grande échelle rendent donc délicate la modélisation du climat et de l'environnement régional à fine échelle. Dans ce contexte, l'objectif de cette thèse est de mieux appréhender la nature et les effets des interactions d'échelles sur notre compréhension du climat régional méditerranéen et sur sa modélisation à fine échelle par approches dynamiques, statistiques et stochastiques.

L'observation spatiale permet une description et une évaluation synoptique de cette dynamique à mésoéchelle au moyen de l'altimétrie et la diffusiométrie. Cette évaluation a été le premier objectif de cette thèse et a permis de développer un produit distribué à la communauté scientifique internationale : le produit GEKCO. Cependant la description des processus submésoéchelle à plus fine résolution nécessite l'utilisation de données à super-résolution (couleur de l'eau, température de surface) qui ont la possibilité de représenter toute la complexité d'un océan en régime de turbulence pleinement développée. Une méthode à la croisée de l'océanographie physique et de la "science de la complexité" utilisant la formulation microcanonique de la cascade multiplicative, le produit GEKCO et des images de température de la mer, a fait l'objet de la seconde partie de ce manuscrit. La dynamique océanique étant la clef de voûte de tout le monde marin du vivant, la dernière partie de cette thèse s'est intéressée à l'impact de la circulation à mésoéchelle et à submésoéchelle sur la chaîne trophique marine en se focalisant sur ses deux extrémités. L'étude de la circulation à submésoéchelle a permis de montrer qu'elle joue un rôle prépondérant pour la biomasse marine ; un rôle d'activateur en océan ouvert et un rôle d'inhibiteur dans les systèmes d'upwelling de bord Est. The ocean is governed by complex movements at all spatio-temporal scales. Within an mean and global circulation exists a secondary circulation inhabited by fronts, meanders, narrow jets, eddies, named mesoscale circulation. Observation with satellites allows a description and a synoptic evaluation of this dynamics at mesoscale by using altimetric and scatterometric data. This evaluation was the first objective of the thesis and allowed to develop a product distributed to the international scientific community : the GEKCO product. However, the description of submesoscale processes at finer resolution requires the use of super-resolution data (like ocean color or sea surface temperature) which have the ability to represent all the complexity of an ocean in fully developed turbulence. A method between physical oceanography and "science of the complexity" using the microcanonical formulation of the multiplicative cascade, the GEKCO product and sea surface temperature images was the topic of the second part of this manuscript. The ocean dynamics being the keystone of all marine ecosystems, the last part of this thesis was dedicated to the meso and submesoscale impact of the ocean dynamics to the trophic chain by focusing on its two extremities. Study of the flow at submesoscale allowed to show that it plays a preponderant role on the marine biomass ; role of activator in open ocean and role of inhibitor in the east boundary upwelling systems. Various studies on top marine predator paths demonstrated the necessity of taking into account the ocean dynamics to interpret their navigational behavior

For decades, cybernetics, systems theorists and researchers in the field of Artificial Intelligence and Artificial Life have been looking for methods of building intelligent computer applications that can solve complex problems. By nature, many design problems are complex and solving these requires a certain degree of intelligence. Therefore, it comes as no surprise, that sophisticated computational applications have become increasingly popular amongst academics and practitioners in various design disciplines. Despite the recent success of generative design methods, there are many new modelling paradigms from Al and AL research that remain largely unexplored in the context of architectural and urban design. One of such paradigms is multi-agent modelling. Although thoroughly explored and implemented in a diverse range of subject areas from social sciences to economics, design disciplines have largely refrained from deploying multi-agent systems. This thesis explores multi-agent systems for conceptual design development - for generating circulation diagrams. Besides studying several known models in the architectural and urban design context, a few novel ones are proposed. Instead of looking at existing urban and architectural theory, the source of inspiration for building circulation models comes from processes found in nature where the movement based on local navigational decisions lead to the emergence of highly complex and adaptable networks. Following the synthetic modelling approach, it is argued that studying and building simple agent based models creates in-depth knowledge about underlying principles of network development processes and allows one to gradually move towards building more sophisticated models. Once the principles of generating circulation systems are well understood, one can use these for creative purposes in designing circulation in buildings and settlements. The main aim of this thesis is to develop and expose generative methods for the early stages of the design process. By investigating the ways of building, validating and controlling generative models, it is demonstrated how these models can be integrated into the design work flow.

La premiere partie de la these decrit les fondements de l'intelligence artificielle utilises pour donner une definition detaillee de l'intelligence artificielle distribuee. La notion de relation entre agents y est approfondie. La representation des connaissances de chaque agent et la facon dont un monde multi-agent peut etre simule y sont egalement decrites. Tout cela permet a l'auteur de caracteriser ce monde multi-agent particulier qui est celui de la circulation autoroutiere. La deuxieme partie presente differentes methodes de decision multi-agent permettant a un agent de prendre une decision en fonction des influences des autres agents. Elles permettent de mettre en uvre des regles de priorite qui servent a resoudre les conflits pour acceder a des ressources communes. Une evaluation theorique du cout de ces methodes est donnee. L'auteur propose d'utiliser celle qui est la plus avantageuse pour faire de la planification multi-agent, chaque agent produisant un plan d'actions en fonction des intentions a court terme des autres agents. La replanification selective permet a chaque agent de reagir efficacement lorsqu'une nouvelle information remet en cause une partie de son plan. Ces resultats sont utilises pour construire un pilote automatique pour vehicule en circulation autoroutiere. Il fournit les elements necessaires a la realisation d'un copilote pour la surveillance d'un vehicule pilote par un conducteur humain

The study of past climates provides a unique opportunity to test our understanding of the Earth system and our confidence in climate models. The nature of this subject requires a fine balance between complexity and efficiency. While comprehensive models can capture the system’s behaviour more realistically, fast but less accurate models are capable of integrating on the long timescale associated with Palaeoclimatology. In this thesis, a statistical approach is proposed to address the limitation of our simple atmospheric module in simulating glacial climates by incorporating a statistical surrogate of a general circulation model of the atmosphere into our Earth system modelling framework, GENIE. To utilise the available model spectrum of different complexities, a multi-level Gaussian Process (GP) emulation technique is proposed to established the link between a computationally expensive atmospheric model, PLASIM (Planet Simulator), and a cheaper model, EMBM (energy-moisture balance model). The method is first demonstrated by emulating a scalar summary quantity. A dimensional reduction technique is then introduced, allowing the high-dimensional model outputs to be emulated as functions of high-dimensional boundary forcing inputs. Even though the two atmospheric models chosen are structurally unrelated, GP emulators of PLASIM atmospheric variables are successfully constructed using EMBM as a fast approximation. With the extra information gained from the cheap model, the emulators of PLASIM’s 2-D surface output fields, are built at a reduced computational cost. The emulated quantities are validated against simulated values, showing that the ensemble-wide behaviour of the spatial fields is well captured. Finally, the emulator of PLASIM’s wind field is incorporated into GENIE, providing an interactive statistical wind field which responds to changes in the bound- ary condition described by the ocean module. While exhibiting certain limitation due to the structural bias in PLASIM’s wind, the new hybrid model introduces additional variations to the over-diffusive spatial outputs of EMBM without incurring a substantial computational cost.

La variabilité de la circulation côtière en Afrique centrale, avec une grande précision en dans l'estuaire du Cameroun aux échelles de temps saisonnières, intra-saisonnières et événementiels, est simulée validée par des observations in-situ et satellitaires. Nous avons montré que la qualité des observations satellites des missions Topex-poseidon, Jason1 et Jason2 et les traitements effectués par le CTOH permettent une bonne estimation de la marée côtière. Dans la plaine abyssale, on note que la température de surface reste élevée toute l'année, avec une baisse de plus de 5°C Celsius observée en été boréal. Le diagnostic des courants montre que dans zone profonde de notre domaine, entre 1°N et 4°N, on observe le Courant Guinéen qui rentre avec une intensité donc le maximum atteint 0.4 ms-1. Une partie de ce courant et recircule directement vers le large en passant par l'île de Principe, où va vers la côte avant de remonter vers la baie du Biafra en passant par le sud-est de Malabo. On a également un courant très côtier qui est orienté du sud vers le nord-ouest durant toute l'année. Au mois d'Août on observe un tourbillon à la limite des côtes Camerounaise et Gabonaise. Il s'intensifie au mois de Septembre et fait plus de 50 km de rayon. Autour de 50 m de profondeur, nous observons un sous courant encore non identifié dans la littérature, qui rentre autour de la latitude 3.5°N avec une terminaison se situant vers 7°E. Il recircule dans le sous courant équatorial nord. Dans la partie profonde variabilité de la salinité est liée à la variabilité de l'OGCM, alors que dans l'estuaire elle dépend non seulement des régimes des différents fleuves, mais surtout du cycle vives-eaux, et mortes-eaux de la marée. To study the variability of the coastal circulation (salinity, temperature, currents and transport) in Central Africa, with higher precision in the Cameroon estuary to seasonal time scales, intra-seasonal and event, we have built three models, made simulations followed by validation with in-situ observations and satellite. We have shown that the quality of the satellite Topex-Poseidon observations, Jason1, and Jason2 missions and processing performed by the CTOH allow a good estimate of the coastal tide with a lag of two centimeters between the model and satellite data, whereas with the in situ data there is an error of one centimeter. The error with the altimetry is greater in the areas with a significant river discharge. In the deep ocean, the surface temperature remains high throughout the year, and decrease more than 5° C Celsius observed in the boreal summer. The lower number of the SST could be linked to the development of the cold tongue in the south of the equator wihch appears at the same time. The surface current seeing between 1° N and 4° N, is the Guinea Current which the maximum intesity reached 0.4 ms-1. A part of this current and recirculates directly seaward through the Principe island, The other branch of this current goes to the front side of the brigth of Biafra through the southeast of Malabo where it appears to be increasing because the strong bathymetric gradient. We has also the coastal current oriented from south to northwest throughout the year. More specifically in the month of August the vortex appears on the border of Cameroon and Gabon coasts. It intensified in September with more than 50 km radius. It is powered by the Guinean coastal current and the current described above. Around 50 m depth, we observe under current not yet identified in the literature that fits around 3.5° N latitude with termination being around 7° E. It recirculates in the deep ocean near 0°N. The salinity variability in the deep ocean is linked to the variability of the OGCM, while in the estuary depends not only to rivers discharges, but most of the spring tide cycle, and neap tide. The maximum surface tide current associated this cycle is respectively 1 ms-1 and 2 ms-1. The stratification of the estuary is more dependent on the tide than rivers flows. The sensitivity tests show that the deforestation of mangroves reduces the average water level of the estuary at the scale of a tidal cycle. A small river discharge leads to a strong increase in salinity, which can reach 7 psu in boreal winter, and was 2 psu in boreal summer. It was the same order of magnitude but in terms of dicreasing of the salinity when the rivers discharge are strong

An ethnographic study of music, performance, migration, and circulation, this book examines how forms of love and intimacy are linked to changing conceptions of political solidarity and forms of belonging, through the lens of Nepali dohori song. The book describes dohori: improvised, dialogic performed poetry that is sung, in which a witty repartee of exchanges is based on poetic couplets with a fixed rhyme scheme, often backed by instrumental music and accompanying dance, performed between men and women, with a primary focus on romantic love. The book tells the story of dohori’s relationship with changing ideas of Nepal as a nation-state, and how different concepts of national unity have incorporated marginality, in the intersectional arenas of caste, indigeneity, class, gender, and regional identity. In the aftermath of Nepal’s ten-year civil war, changing political realities, increased migration, and circulation of people, media, and practices are redefining concepts of appropriate intimate relationships and their associated systems of exchange. Through multi-sited ethnography of performances, media production, circulation, reception, and the daily lives of performers and fans in Nepal and the United Kingdom, this book examines how people use dohori to challenge (and uphold) social categories, while also creating affective solidarities.

This chapter explores the key factors involved in the interaction between religion and globalization. It highlights the roles played by transnational networks, fields, and regimes, as well as migrant and religious diasporas, mass culture, and electronic media in the global circulation and appropriation of religious practices, beliefs, symbols, artifacts, and identities. Using the examples of religious networks associated with Islam, Hinduism, and Christianities, the chapter also argues that while the economic dimensions of religion in a context of globalization are central, the dynamics of global religious fields cannot be reduced to those of the world capitalist system. Religious flows and networks are multi-directional. There is thus a need to develop interdisciplinary and multi-sited approaches to these flows and networks, examining the ways in which they challenge fixed center–periphery models and produce alternative power/geometries shaping religious identities, cultures, and embodied as well as spatialized ontologies.

It highlights scholarship on literary works that focus on the logics of circulation drawn from multiple literary cultures and technologies of the textual. While not rejecting the nation as a site of analysis, these volumes will offer insights into new cartographies – the hemispheric, the oceanic, the transregional, the archipelagic, the multilingual local – that better reflect the multi-scalar and spatially dispersed nature of literary production. It will interrogate existing historical, methodological and cartographic boundaries, and showcase humanistic and literary endeavors in the face of world scale environmental and humanitarian catastrophes.

AbstractSchistosomiasis is a parasitic disease that affects millions of people in 78 countries, where it is held responsible for considerable morbidity and mortality. It is caused by a blood fluke, which provokes an immunological response to hundreds of its antigens. This induces multi-organ pathology through the formation of tissue granulomata or circulating immune complexes. In addition, it is amyloidogenic and carcinogenic, through the interaction of immunological perturbation with confounding metabolic and genetic factors. The primary targets of schistosomiasis are urinary and hepatointestinal.The lower urinary tract is mainly affected in S. haematobium infection, and may lead to chronic pyelonephritis and/or obstructive nephropathy. The colon and liver are the targets of S. mansoni and S. japonicum infection, leading to hepatic fibrosis, portal hypertension, and liver failure. S. mansoni may also lead to immune complex glomerulonephritis, which is discussed elsewhere. Both S. haematobium and S. mansoni ova may be carried with the venous circulation to the lungs, where they provoke granulomatous and immune-mediated endothelial injury leading to cor-pulmonale. Ova may be subsequently carried with the arterial circulation to form ‘metastatic’ granulomas in other tissues, notably the brain (S. japonicum), spinal cord (S. haematobium), skin, conjunctiva, and genital organs.Schistosomiasis is preventable. World Health Organization programmes have successfully eradicated or reduced the incidence of infection in many countries, particularly Egypt and China. Prevention strategies include health education, raising hygiene standards, and interruption of the parasite’s life cycle by snail control and mass treatment. The search for a vaccine continues. Effective antiparasitic treatment is now possible with high elimination rates. Available agents include praziquantel and artemether for all species, metrifonate for S. haematobium, and oxamniquine for S. mansoni. Successful outcome correlates with early intervention, before fibrosis has occurred.

This book draws on Plato’s philosophy to throw light on contemporary leadership theory and practice. It combines an account of his thought with applications to modern case studies and approaches, in both politics and business. Rather than attempting to give a single ‘one-size-fits-all’ definition of leadership, his strategy was to break it into its different strands. He presents several ‘models’ of leadership, most of them images or analogies: the leader as doctor, navigator, artist, teacher, shepherd, weaver, or sower. Each model points to features of leadership that we intuitively recognize to be important (e.g. curing a social malaise, charting a new course, or weaving together the social fabric). Some were already in wide circulation in Plato’s time, like the shepherd and the navigator. What he did was to make them much richer and more complex. The book goes through the models individually, setting out the essentials of Plato’s thought and then illustrating each model with modern case studies—eighteen in total, including presidents, CEOs, and Nobel laureates. There is also a chapter comparing Plato’s models with four recent leadership approaches. Highly innovative in its approach, this book presupposes no prior knowledge of Plato, although those familiar with his philosophy will find it a fruitful way of re-reading his work. But the focus is first and foremost on leadership, rather than celebrating Plato’s achievements: the priority is to present a multi-faceted approach, which does justice to the complex phenomenon of leadership.

The Tibetan Plateau (TP) is subjected to strong interactions among the atmosphere, hydrosphere, cryosphere, and biosphere. The Plateau exerts huge thermal forcing on the mid-troposphere over the mid-latitude of the Northern Hemisphere during spring and summer. This region also contains the headwaters of major rivers in Asia and provides a large portion of the water resources used for economic activities in adjacent regions. Since the beginning of the 1980s, the TP has undergone evident climate changes, with overall surface air warming and moistening, solar dimming, and decrease in wind speed. Surface warming, which depends on elevation and its horizontal pattern (warming in most of the TP but cooling in the westernmost TP), was consistent with glacial changes. Accompanying the warming was air moistening, with a sudden increase in precipitable water in 1998. Both triggered more deep clouds, which resulted in solar dimming. Surface wind speed declined from the 1970s and started to recover in 2002, as a result of atmospheric circulation adjustment caused by the differential surface warming between Asian high latitudes and low latitudes.The climate changes over the TP have changed energy and water cycles and has thus reshaped the local environment. Thermal forcing over the TP has weakened. The warming and decrease in wind speed lowered the Bowen ratio and has led to less surface sensible heating. Atmospheric radiative cooling has been enhanced, mainly through outgoing longwave emission from the warming planetary system and slightly enhanced solar radiation reflection. The trend in both energy terms has contributed to the weakening of thermal forcing over the Plateau. The water cycle has been significantly altered by the climate changes. The monsoon-impacted region (i.e., the southern and eastern regions of the TP) has received less precipitation, more evaporation, less soil moisture and less runoff, which has resulted in the general shrinkage of lakes and pools in this region, although glacier melt has increased. The region dominated by westerlies (i.e., central, northern and western regions of the TP) received more precipitation, more evaporation, more soil moisture and more runoff, which together with more glacier melt resulted in the general expansion of lakes in this region. The overall wetting in the TP is due to both the warmer and moister conditions at the surface, which increased convective available potential energy and may eventually depend on decadal variability of atmospheric circulations such as Atlantic Multi-decadal Oscillation and an intensified Siberian High. The drying process in the southern region is perhaps related to the expansion of Hadley circulation. All these processes have not been well understood.

AbstractIn a context of increasing mobility, the management of social protection issues from below may encompass several countries. The limited studies on this topic mainly frame migrants’ use of an extended transnational social-protection space as an opportunistic strategy aimed at increasing resources. This chapter analyses the cross-border arrangements of dual Ecuadorian-Spanish citizens coping with the recurrent crisis, adopting a socio-spatial perspective of circulation over the life course. Our findings show that families flexibly adapt to such destabilisations through a mechanism of diffuse circulation of support as compensation practices implying a risky accumulation of constraints and vulnerability. This contrasts with the framings on migrants’ opportunistic and strategic use of social-protection resources and with ‘the welfare magnet’ or ‘welfare tourism’ assumptions. The study draws on fieldwork among 36 transnational families investigated through a multi-sited ethnography in Spain, England and Ecuador in 2015–2016, with a partially matched sample.

AbstractIn this conclusion, we revisit some of the key findings of this book’s analytical/interpretative cuts into the online circulation of museum collections. The pedagogical challenges museums face when collection knowledge is appropriated by groups whose political aims threaten social solidarity and democratic values are discussed. Highlighted are the ways in which collection knowledge is both customised and open-ended when digitisations, narratives and research findings flow between multiple platforms and are transmitted through interfaces including home feeds or lists. We conclude that curatorial agency simultaneously becomes humanist and subjective; machinic and computational; and imbricated in more-than-human ontological formations that insert digitisations and museum knowledge in multi-scalar geographies and temporalities extending from deep geological time into unforeseen futures.

In this chapter, Ondřej Daniel discusses the contemporary developments of hardbass, a predominantly Eastern European electronic dance music style that emerged at the turn of the first decade of the twenty-first century in Russia and spread to different countries of the region and beyond. Specifically, the author focuses on de-politicized and commodified hardbass in relation to social class and the mutations it underwent in late postsocialism in Eastern Europe, while paying particular attention to contexts of the Czech Republic and Russia. In terms of transnational circulation, Daniel approaches hardbass as an element of cultural transfer. The resulting study is based on a multi-site research project focusing beyond Eastern Europe on the specific relationship of hardbass to the Netherlands. It interprets contemporary hardbass music videos in line with mocking colonization by the »normcore« strategies of the »middle class« hipster youth possessing cultural and to certain extent also social and economic capital.

Abstract Research on gateway communities conventionally focuses on micro-level aspects that emerge in the nexus of environmental conservation, tourism development and local livelihoods. However, the embeddedness of places and the local tourism sector in the modes of production, consumption and capital circulation of contemporary capitalism remains oftentimes unaddressed. This chapter, therefore, adopts a political economy perspective and examines the macro-frameworks that condition tourism development in Finnish Lapland, in tandem with attempts to consolidate its gateway position to the Arctic. The aim is to encourage a more nuanced view on gateway status in regions where tourism development is driven by multi-scalar stakeholder interests and embedded into competitive regional development initiatives. While the devastating effects of climate change and human induced pollution on the fragile terrestrial and maritime Arctic ecosystems are well recognized, the spatial reimagination of Lapland in the Arctic represents another neoliberal step towards the total commodification of the environment.

The Environmental Laboratory (EL) and the Coastal and Hydraulics Laboratory (CHL) have jointly completed a number of large-scale hydrodynamic, sediment and water quality transport studies. EL and CHL have successfully executed these studies utilizing the Geophysical Scale Transport Modeling System (GSMB). The model framework of GSMB is composed of multiple process models as shown in Figure 1. Figure 1 shows that the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) accepted wave, hydrodynamic, sediment and water quality transport models are directly and indirectly linked within the GSMB framework. The components of GSMB are the two-dimensional (2D) deep-water wave action model (WAM) (Komen et al. 1994, Jensen et al. 2012), data from meteorological model (MET) (e.g., Saha et al. 2010 - http://journals.ametsoc.org/doi/pdf/10.1175/2010BAMS3001.1), shallow water wave models (STWAVE) (Smith et al. 1999), Coastal Modeling System wave (CMS-WAVE) (Lin et al. 2008), the large-scale, unstructured two-dimensional Advanced Circulation (2D ADCIRC) hydrodynamic model (http://www.adcirc.org), and the regional scale models, Curvilinear Hydrodynamics in three dimensions-Multi-Block (CH3D-MB) (Luong and Chapman 2009), which is the multi-block (MB) version of Curvilinear Hydrodynamics in three-dimensions-Waterways Experiments Station (CH3D-WES) (Chapman et al. 1996, Chapman et al. 2009), MB CH3D-SEDZLJ sediment transport model (Hayter et al. 2012), and CE-QUAL Management - ICM water quality model (Bunch et al. 2003, Cerco and Cole 1994). Task 1 of the DOER project, “Modeling Transport in Wetting/Drying and Vegetated Regions,” is to implement and test three-dimensional (3D) wetting and drying (W/D) within GSMB. This technical note describes the methods and results of Task 1. The original W/D routines were restricted to a single vertical layer or depth-averaged simulations. In order to retain the required 3D or multi-layer capability of MB-CH3D, a multi-block version with variable block layers was developed (Chapman and Luong 2009). This approach requires a combination of grid decomposition, MB, and Message Passing Interface (MPI) communication (Snir et al. 1998). The MB single layer W/D has demonstrated itself as an effective tool in hyper-tide environments, such as Cook Inlet, Alaska (Hayter et al. 2012). The code modifications, implementation, and testing of a fully 3D W/D are described in the following sections of this technical note.

The objective of this study is to search for features and indicators from the identified geothermal resource sweet spot in the south Mount Meager area that are applicable to other volcanic complexes in the Garibaldi Volcanic Belt. A Landsat 8 multi-spectral band dataset, for a total of 57 images ranging from visible through infrared to thermal infrared frequency channels and covering different years and seasons, were selected. Specific features that are indicative of high geothermal heat flux, fractured permeable zones, and groundwater circulation, the three key elements in exploring for geothermal resource, were extracted. The thermal infrared images from different seasons show occurrence of high temperature anomalies and their association with volcanic and intrusive bodies, and reveal the variation in location and intensity of the anomalies with time over four seasons, allowing inference of specific heat transform mechanisms. Automatically extracted linear features using AI/ML algorithms developed for computer vision from various frequency bands show various linear segment groups that are likely surface expression associated with local volcanic activities, regional deformation and slope failure. In conjunction with regional structural models and field observations, the anomalies and features from remotely sensed images were interpreted to provide new insights for improving our understanding of the Mount Meager geothermal system and its characteristics. After validation, the methods developed and indicators identified in this study can be applied to other volcanic complexes in the Garibaldi, or other volcanic belts for geothermal resource reconnaissance.
