The implementation of Good Amil Governance as one of the important aspects of a standard of international zakat management, which is stated in Zakat Core Principles, requires an approach that is more than just amil competence and qualification aspects. The psychological perspective of amil also needs to be considered to obtain and maintain the best human resources. As a profession that is oriented towards social benefits, an amil has different working rhythm and consequences. This research aims to measure level of amil’s happiness in the workplace and further study its impact on amil productivity. The result shows that amil is a satisfying job. Further, the most blissful factor for amil is work motivation, while the most unhappy factor for amil is the career path, which seems to be less promising. In addition, the happiness level of amil has a positive relationship with his or her productivity level. Therefore, psychology condition of an amil should be considered in order to increase the performance of zakat institutions.

This research is based on the problem of morphological and syntactical first language interference which is often overlooked in second language learning. Interference problems result in misunderstanding the meaning of words or sentences spoken by students towards the second language used. This study attempts to analyze the Indonesian morphological and syntactical interference in speaking Arabic of Al-Kindy community UIN Malang, explaining the factors and implications of interference in learning speaking Arabic. This research method uses a descriptive qualitative approach, and the data are collected through observation by analyzing subject audio documentation data (listening technique- note-taking technique) and interviews. The results showed that members of the al-Kindy community experienced Indonesian morphological interference in word formation, merging/compounding, repetition/reduplication. Meanwhile, Indonesian syntactical interference occurs in: adding sentence elements, errors (sentence elements, sentence location, phrase formation), and missing sentence elements. The factors of the interference are bilingualism, vocabulary mastery, motivation, and psychology of speakers towards the Arabic used. Interference has implications for barriers and challenges in Arabic language learning. The barriers are in the intensity of language interference phenomena, so the language quality is stagnant, and the challenges are to make interference phenomena as motivation for learners to evaluate the language learning process better

The findings in the clinical practice field indicate problems related to the inconsistency of parental participation in the therapy that the child undergoes, namely the absence of parents according to the schedule, non-adherence to the therapist's advice, and premature termination. It raises questions of parents' motivation to participate in their children's therapy while no research in Indonesia examines this topic. The current study aims to understand the description of parents' motivation to participate in their child therapy. This qualitative study was conducted by interviewing 3 mothers (age 23-36 years) whose children (age 3-5 years) undergo brain gym therapy at a psychology bureau in Bandung. They are from the same socioeconomic class, have joined the therapy program for at least one month, and were selected using the purposive sampling technique. The results indicate that the underlying motivation for parental participation in child therapy is parents' need for a change in the child's condition and parents' expectation of the therapeutic outcome. Therapy results that match expectations and positive responses from the environment act as reinforcers that make parents willing to continue participating in child therapy.

The low levels of readiness for e-learning, followed by the low satisfaction levels experienced by university students during the COVID-19 pandemic, is a crucial yet confounding issue. Many reports relate the lack of technological competence and motivation to this problem. This study examined aspects of technological competence and motivation as antecedent factors that affect student user and e-learning readiness. In addition, the study also tested the determination of the role of e-learning readiness as a mediator of the indirect influence of technological competence and motivation on student satisfaction. The study involved 1228 university students from the province of Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Data collection was assisted by using a closed questionnaire with a five-point Likert scale tested for validity and reliability. Structural Equation Modeling was used to analyze the data through path analysis and bootstrap methods. This study showed that technological competence and motivation significantly affected e-learning readiness and user satisfaction. Furthermore, e-learning readiness was seen to act as a significant mediator in the indirect effect of technological competence and motivation on student satisfaction. Therefore, these results strengthen the theory that shaping student satisfaction in e-learning requires mature e-learning readiness. In forming this readiness, technological competence and balanced motivation are needed.

The Marriage Law in Indonesia (UUP) is a positive legal rule in building a family. The UUP for example states that the purpose of marriage is to form a happy family, while the obligations of a husband and wife are to love, respect, respect and be loyal. Happiness, love, respect and loyalty are part of the psychological domain that cannot be achieved by merely reading normative juridical rules. Therefore a psychology study is needed to study the UUP. In addition to the psychological aspects, it is also important to study the UUP with a normative approach to see whether the UUP elaborates the normative values of the Qur'an as a source of Islamic teachings. The background of this paper is compiled with the aim of explaining the manifestations of psychological aspects formulated in the UUP so that it can be a reference for implementation in building families and analyzing the normative values of the Qur'an absorbed by the UUP. Therefore this UUP study was conducted with an integrated approach to normative and psychological juridical. This study also aims to develop family law with an integrative juridical psychological approach. The primary data sources used are the book of the Qur'aan by Quraysh Shihab, UUP and the book Motivation and Personality which examines happy psychology by Abraham H. Maslow and Triagular Theori of Love which discusses the theory of love in psychological perspective by Robert. J Steinberg as well as secondary sources related to research. The results of this study indicate that forming a happy family as a marriage goal is in harmony with Q.S. ar-Rum (30): 21. While in a psychological perspective marital happiness can be achieved by a husband and wife can achieve if fulfilled the five basic human needs (hierarchy of needs) in humanistic psychology namely: physiological, security, social, appreciation and self-actualization needs. While husband and wife love is manifested in three aspects, namely attachment, caring and intimacy.

Islamic education (Madrasah) mostly accepts students with economic backgrounds whose parents are poor. their psychological performance is low as they lack self-confidence, and also lack achievement motivation. In strengthening psychological performance, it can be intervened through students’ participation both in student organizations and extracurricular activities in school. This study aimed to determine the development of positive values in students at the educational unit level and the follow-up of its development at the ministerial level. This research used descriptive qualitative approach by observing, interviewing and collecting supporting documents. Research subjects and informants were sampled from the education unit level and the ministry level. Data validity was performed by triangulation sources and methods, while data analysis method employed interactive analysis. The results indicate that the development of positive values in students at the educational unit level includes academic skills development, social-emotional development, leadership development and self-confidence in all areas of extracurricular activities. Follow-up development at the ministerial level is in the form of competitions within the framework of developing these skills. This finding explains the importance of extracurricular activities to improve a positive personality and the character of Islamic secondary school students. With this, every school must try to encourage and design the right steps for students involved in extracurricular activities.

<p class="AbstractText">This study is aimed at exploring the voices of English teachers and students of a state senior high school towards the National Exam policy and its implementation in Indonesia. Several theories of psychology and language learning were applied in this study as the theoretical framework. This study used a descriptive qualitative method. The participants were chosen by purposive sampling technique. The data for this study were garnered through a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) conducted to the selected twelfth-grade students and semi-structured interviews done to two English teachers. Both data were analyzed descriptively. Upon the analysis, two paramount themes prevailed: (1) the negative response towards the implementation and accuracy of National Exam (NE) policy in Indonesia; and (2) unintended impacts of NE policy on teaching and learning activity, students’ motivation, and English Language Learning and Curriculum. This study offers information for the government as the policymaker, school leaders, teachers, and researchers to understand how the NE is implemented at the school level.</p>

In the first place this article describes the background for the global ethos declared by the parliament of world religions in Chicago in 1993. That background is the parliament of religions itself and Hans Küng, the originator of the global ethos project, who with his team at Tübingen wrote the draft for the declaration. After that, the contents of the declaration on global ethos are discussed according to the two principles and five values put forward. In the second part, reflections are made on the relevance of this declaration on global ethos for interreligious dialogue in Indonesia. This ethos can only be implemented in a long process in which each religion explores its respective tradition to find the motivation for implementing that ethos. The results of this research and deepening need to be shared between religions in dialogue, which helps them to complement and support each other. Finally, it is emphasized that the Indonesian Philosophy and Theology Association should participate in intellectual research on the values of global ethos from a Christian perspective and should form networks with research institutes and universities from other religions to further promote understanding and working together between different religions in Indonesia and Asia. <br /><br /><strong>Keywords:</strong> Parliament of world religions, global ethos, Hans Küng, AFTI, interreligious dialogue

This study compared children of Southeast Asian immigrant mothers with those of native-born Taiwanese in terms of their school adjustment. A sample comprising 258 adolescents of Southeast Asian immigrant mothers (including mothers from Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines) and 769 children of native-born Taiwanese mothers was examined. This study used the item response theory (IRT) approach to develop a school adjustment inventory (SAI). Results showed that adolescents of Southeast Asian immigrant mothers had poorer school adjustment than did adolescents of native Taiwanese mothers. The adolescents of Southeast Asian immigrant mothers gained significantly lower scores for “academic performance” and “teacher-student relationship” than did the adolescents of native Taiwanese mothers. However, the 2 groups did not differ in terms of “learning motivation” and “peer relationship”.

This paper aims to analyze the intersection between culture, behavior, and family in determining the new leader of family business. Organizationally, the culture of family has a significant role in the founder's willingness to hand over his business to someone who is undoubtedly considered the best. This paper uses a qualitative approach where the appropriate theoretical foundation is applied to explain the succession of family business. However, observation method is used in order to obtain the facts of family business succession of batik industry in Pekalongan City, Indonesia. Meanwhile, the sociology and psychology approach used to analyze these facts; therefore, the succession process can be explained correctly. This paper provides several important results of family business succession in Pekalongan City, Indonesia. The succession tends to be carried out in several stages; therefore, the process runs smoothly, i.e., the successor improves his/her ability in managing the business, and then its predecessor reduces their responsibility. Further, the succession process consists of two models, namely planned and unplanned models, where they have their strengths and weakness. We believe some factors influence the succession process, such as motivation, commitment, and dependence of predecessor and successor.

Another indication of the result is that the teachers also need to learn teaching and learning models, developmental psychology, teaching motivation, teaching and learning evaluation, teaching and learning media, technology-based learning, lesson plan, 2013 curriculum, classroom display, public speaking and literacy-based learning that more than 50% teachers defined them as very important to learn. However, only 47% of respondents mentioned Classroom Action Research is very important to learn. Based on the results of this study, the designer of TDP suggested considering classroom management as the first priority to deliver in the TDP followed by teaching and learning models, developmental psychology, teaching motivation, teaching and learning evaluation, teaching and learning media, technology-based learning, lesson plan, 2013 curriculum, classroom display, public speaking and literacy-based learning. <p><em>One of the cities in Indonesia that has problems with school dropout children due to economic problems is Surakarta City. By 2015, 1.54% of workers in this city are teenagers and as many as 6.08% of the population are unemployed (Ermawati, 2015). In fact, the world has become more open and the competition both in the field of economy and employment becomes increasingly tight. One solution to solve the problem is with non formal education. Non-formal education serves as a substitute or additional education that can increase both academic and life skills. Another problem that arises is how to improve motivation and stimuli in processing learning for those who drop out of school. This can be achieved by applying the concept of environmental psychology to the design of educational facilities. By using the concept of environmental psychology, the learning activities can run effectively and learners become more creative and innovative. Non formal education system provided at this education center are life skills training, pursuing equalization packages and tutoring. Each of these activities has its own support rooms such as theory classrooms, practice spaces, library, studio and auditorium which each room apply the concept of environmental psychology in its design.</em><em></em></p>

The Covid-19 pandemic has undoubtedly had quite a significant impact on many aspects of human society, including a students’ learning experiences. As of March 2020, in lieu of recent policies to mitigate the spread of Covid-19, all institutions in Indonesia have been required to do distance learning, including universities. This sudden change could possibly have an impact on the learning process on a student’s learning. Seeing as most universities use E-Learning as the preferred method of distance learning, this study aims to study the readiness of students to participate in E-Learning. This study uses a quantitative descriptive method to analyse the E-Learning Readiness (ELR) of Faculty of Psychology students from Unika Atma Jaya from batches 2018-2021. This study involves 180 participants aged 17-24. Analysis shows that generally students are ready to use E-Learning (ELR score = 3,5 where above 3,4 is considered ready, but not optimal), specifically in the dimensions Learner Control and Motivation For Learning. When further broken into two groups 2018-2019 (experienced face to face before pandemic) and 2020-2021 (E-Learning only), 2018-2019 students show a trend of having lesser readiness levels than their 2020-2021 peers. Even if according to t-score analysis shows no statistical difference between the overall ELR levels of students in batches 2018-2019 and 2020-2021, there are still differences in ELR scores when analysing individual dimensions, particularly the dimensions Computer Internet Self-Efficacy, Motivation For Learning, and Learner Control.

The usage of social media has become a part of youth’s life in this digital era. Particularly in Indonesia, Instagram is one of the most popular platforms among youth. In the practice of Instagram usage, apparently a person could manage more than just one account, creating phenomenon known as ‘real Instagram account’ and ‘fake Instagram account’. Hence this form of practice is raising question in regards to the identity presented by users in those accounts. This paper aims to analyze the practice of having multiple accounts in Instagram platform, focusing on how the self-presentation of users presented and why such presentation displayed, specifically in the contestation between the concept of ‘real’ and ‘fake’. Scope of the study in this research covers the media psychology of interconnection between self and social media platform. Research was conducted by mixed-method of new ethnography and virtual ethnography. Expected findings in this research include the analysis of fragmented self in Instagram multiple accounts, focusing in the issue of how the concept of ‘real’ and ‘fake’ are being defined by users, and the aspects behind such understandings. Apparently, in the social media platform as Instagram, youth is in search for a sense of freedom and authenticity, where they could be free in expressing themselves. Thus, the motivation of having multiple accounts. However, findings in this research also indicate that certain standards have been created in the Instagram, that at some point to some extent have conditioned users to present themselves in certain ways.

Purpose – At the beginning of 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic affected many aspects of life, including education. In response, the Indonesian government mandated all educational institutions, including universities, to implement online learning. Through online learning, many university students experienced considerable changes in the way they regulated their knowledge-seeking process. This research examined the level of EFL university students' self-regulated learning during their online learning activities for an English academic writing course, as well as the difficulties encountered and strategies developed in the online learning context. Methodology – This research employed a convergent mixed-method research design by adapting the Online Self-Regulated Learning Questionnaire (Barnard et al., 2009) and an open-ended questionnaire to discover the students' difficulties and strategies during online learning. The study involved 307 students of the English 3 (Academic Writing) course at President University, Indonesia. Descriptive statistics were employed to analyse the quantitative data sets, while the qualitative data sets were systematically coded and thematically analysed. Findings – The statistical analysis indicated that the students had a medium level of self-regulated learning skills. The qualitative analysis revealed that in the context of online self-regulated learning, the issues they faced included technical, material, time management, study space, and motivation issues. At the same time, the students attempted to alleviate these issues by improving collaboration and time management, and adopting technical, academic, and affective strategies. Significance – By exploring the level of students' self-regulated learning skills, this study provides insights for universities and lecturers into students’ ability to regulate their learning in an online learning context. Additionally, this study has identified the difficulties students face in the online learning process and their strategies to overcome these issues, which can practically inform educational institutions about the necessary support that should be provided to facilitate students' self-regulated learning skills in the online learning context.

Overall, participants were satisfied with the online learning experience, as was evident from the academic achievement in courses conducted with above average CGPA. Multiple regression analysis indicated that distress, anxiety and self-efficacy in online learning were significant predictors of satisfaction with online learning, with self-efficacy in online learning making the largest contribution. However, academic achievement was not a significant predictor of satisfaction with online learning. It is recommended that higher learning institutions provide counselling, behavioral adaptations and study techniques to support students in managing their distress and anxiety surrounding online learning, which is anticipated to continue throughout 2021 due to the increase in virus cases.

A rise in working and studying from home, activities which depend on the Internet, and the exchange of data coupled with a lack of understanding about security for interacting in cyberspace have made cybersecurity one of the most pressing concerns today. One form, in particular, is a social engineering-based cyber attack. Unfortunately, not much research has been conducted on the susceptibility factors that cause this to happen. This study attempts to understand what factors make a person susceptible to cyber attacks that can be seen from three perspectives: habitual perspective, perception perspective, and social and motivation perspective. The objective of the research is to identify specific characteristics and drivers regarding the social engineering-based cyber attack (SECA) susceptibility of a consumer exposed to social media messaging applications. A quantitative survey was employed to test a total of 114 respondents in Indonesia who are categorized as active Internet users. The study found variables within two of the three perspectives that positively contributed to a consumer’s susceptibility to cyberattack. These factors will provide valuable insight into prevention and knowledge of related risks of cyberattacks based on social engineering in the future.

The success of labor is influenced by several factors, namely maternal factors (power, passage, psychology), fetal factors (placenta) and helping factors. Using mirror aids in the process of progress in labor at a second time can increase maternal motivation psychologically and emotionally, this preventing and or decreasing pathological labor prevalence. The purpose of this study was determining the difference in time in mothers who had labor in the second time using a mirror and who did not use a mirror. The design of this study used True - experiment with post test only Control design, the sample of study were 40 physiologically 20 primigraphic delivery mothers who were treated, 20 were not treated and taken randomly. The purpose of this study was determining the time difference in labor mothers when second uses a mirror and does not use a mirror. Observation data collection techniques, it used unpaired T test. This research was conducted in 2018 in the Poncokusumo Malang Health Center. The results showed that labor with the help of a mirror could accelerate the second stage of labor in primigravida mothers. This is evidenced by the average time used by maternity in group I (using mirrors) is 7.05 minutes and the average time used by group II maternity women (without using a mirror) is 16.15 minute . The use of a mirror aid can be used as an instrument complement labor in order to reduce maternal morbidity and mortality in Indonesia.

Information and communication technology has been developed rapidly and affectedvarious aspects such as propagation of information and marketing strategy of tourist attraction. KebunBinatang Ragunan is one of tourist attraction in Indonesia. Aside from recreation area, Kebun BinatangRagunan can be a place to learn animals. However, learning animals itself tends to be less attractive and less interactive. Therefore, an application was developed as one of animal learning media to increase touristmotivation. The application developed in form of quiz game by using gamification like achievement to increase their motivation in animals learning and using Sattolo Shuffle algorithm in order to make quiz more varied. After testing, the application is known affect the Behavioral Intention to Use level around 76.96% and Immersion level around 82.43% in giving motivation and attracting tourist attention to use the application. Sattolo Shuffle algorithm successfully applied in application to produce a unique sequence of each randomized quiz. Keywords—Achievement, Animal Recognition, Gamification, Quiz Game, Sattolo Shuffle. As a movement, majelis shalawat becomes religious phenomenon that recently flourish in Indonesia, particularly Java. It emerges as urban spirituality like majelis dzikir that previously popular among people. However majelis shalawat is dissimilar with majelis dzikir due to its characters are not sadness, sorrow, and crying; it prefer to express happiness, cheerful, and enjoying religion. These characters indicate a Healthy-minded religious phenomenon, a term which is came originally from William James and popularized by W.H.Clark. Among many majelis shalawat groups ini Indonesia, the three most famous and biggest are Majelis Shalawat Habib Syech (Surakarta), Habib Luthfi (Pekalongan), and Maiyah Cak Nun (Yogyakarta). This research explores characteristics of majelis shalawat that indicate healthy-mindedness. Furthermore, it also discovers various motivations that lead people (jamaah) to follow the majelis shalawat. Conducting qualitative method and Psychology of Religion approach, and employing interview and observation as method for data gathering, it results several findings. First, as a religious activity, shalawatan reallydepends on the role of its charismatic leader. The charisma of Habib Luthfi, Habib Syech, and Cak Nun is the main attractive factor for jamaah to come. It ; "> is because the charismatic leaders have deep understanding of religious knowledge and they also are blessed with certain talent such as beautiful voice and having good skill on music. Besides that, the leaders are often giving smart joke. Second, through shalawatan, people feel happiness and optimistic to face their life, preferring extrovert attitudes, have more free theology, and feels conducive atmosphere for their religious growth. Those are evidences that majelis shalawat has healthy-mindedness characters. Third, people motivation also in in attending majlis shalawat consist of religious escapism, strengthening solidarity and ukhuwah islamiyah, to learn more religious knowledge (thalabul ‘ilmi), and to gain religious transformation.

In Indonesia, almost everyone has a gadget or more specifically, a smart cellular phone that is connected to the internet network very easily. Cyberbullying is a way of bullying that involves sophisticated digital technology, which almost always uses the internet as a tool. Cyberbullying is characterized by aggressive behavior carried out by a person or several people using electronic media services including the internet, which is carried out continuously, where the target victim is someone who is considered weak or unable to fight back. The forms of cyberbullying are usually in the form of ridicule, insults, threats or intimidation. The perpetrators of cyberbullying have the motivation to take these actions in the form of anger and revenge, frustration, wanting to be the center of attention of the surrounding environment, mere entertainment, or even just joking with the victim. Victims of cyberbullying often experience a number of psychological problems to even think of committing suicide. The problems that arise are how severe the cyberbullying behavior is in damaging the victim's psychology and/or physical appearance from the perspective of victimology and how to mitigate cyberbullying and take action against the perpetrators from a criminological perspective. The author conducted a qualitative research in which this research is descriptive analytical. Victims of cyberbullying have committed suicide. If it turns out that cyberbullying is felt to be very worrying, then what needs to be done is to capture a screen display containing bullying carried out on social media, be it via a smartphone or computer, then report it to the police. Victims of cyberbullying should receive treatment from professionals such as psychologists, psychiatrists, even the police and the Witness and Victim Protection Agency. The author recommends appropriate punishment for perpetrators who openly cyberbullying in accordance with the ITE Law, because some of them do not regret and even enjoy their actions. This study aimed to find out the challenges of online learning experienced by schools during the pandemic and explore information from the innovations it has carried out in science learning for students at Muhammadiyah junior high school 7 Cerme, Indonesia. Data collection in this study was carried out using interviews, observations, and documentation to identify challenges and innovations in online learning. The data obtained are challenges and innovations during online learning. These challenges include lack of teacher resources, difficulty monitoring teachers in the implementation of learning, difficulties in monitoring students in learning activities, low IT skills, more time in preparing for learning, lack of student motivation to learn, not having devices, and constrained by internet networks, and students lazy to study. The innovations are improving science and technology in learning and monitoring teacher learning through online journals and learning applications. Next, independent home visits of students, conducting training on the use of IT, using online learning media that are mastered by teachers and understood by students, preparing learning materials properly, and independently providing materials and assignments to students. The results of the reflection show that the implementation of online learning is still carried out even though it has limitations that lead to the emergence of several challenges from both teachers and students. Involvement between teachers and students needs to be maximized by improving teacher skills and student learning habits, which are the demands of the current technological era. So limited face-to-face learning is carried out, which combines face-to-face learning in class with online learning to reduce current challenges.

ABSTRACT This study explores the donation experience of Muslim millennial donors, with the main focus on discovering the consumer donor rationality underlying donation experience. The Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) method was conducted to depict the dynamics of Muslim millennials in starting a money donation, developing intention, and identifying the alternative distribution for donations. Ten participants were chosen from Semarang, Central Java, Indonesia, using purposive sampling with predetermined criteria and requirements for selecting participants. The interview data were then analyzed using a narrative type of descriptive qualitative technique. The research results show that altruism and spirituality encourage donation-making. Donors do not expect any reciprocity from the recipient; this understanding is interpreted as altruism. From a religious perspective, this is a form of the donor's obedience to God by carrying out what was ordered and only expecting the reward. All participants are adherents of Islam, so motivation based on spiritual values only focuses on the beliefs of one religion and cannot generally represent many beliefs. Further findings show a transformation of donations from direct donations to donor agencies and, most recently, through digital technology, focusing on future research. The field of transportation psychology has yet to develop rapidly in Indonesia. Inner city transportation council members with an educational background in psychology are still quite rare. There is only one professor in transportation psychology. On the other hand, transportation problem increases in both quantity and quality, especially in major cities. One main source of transportation problem in cities is the lack of willingness of people to use mass public transport vehicle, resulting in traffic jams in main roads to other alternative roads. The current theoretical review article aims to show the various psychological variables that are capable of predicting motives and intentions of individuals to use mass public transport vehicle. Such psychological knowledge is expected to contribute as a possible suggestion of an intervention supporting the effort of the government in the development of transportation facilities and infrastructure, transport regulations, and economic policies related to transportation.

A mere two years ago International Sports Studies was celebrating its fortieth anniversary. At that time, at the beginning of 2018, your editor was able to reflect on the journey of our professional association – the International Society for Comparative Physical Education and Sport (ISCPES). It started with a small, cohesive, and optimistic group of physical education scholars from Europe and North America interested in working across boundaries and exploring new international horizons. The group that met in Borovets in 2017 on the eve of the society’s fortieth anniversary, represented a wider range of origins. They were also more circumspect, tempered by their experience in what had become, four decades later, a very much more complex competitive and fragmented professional environment. Such a comparison seems almost to have reflected a common journey, from the hope and optimism of youth to entry into the challenges and responsibilities of mid adulthood. Yet from the perspective of contemporary history, these last four decades seem generally to be viewed as having been a time of unbroken human progress. Certainly, this is a defensible view when we use technological and economic progress as the criterion. The nation of Indonesia provides an excellent example of progress by these measures. The world’s 10th largest economy in terms of purchasing power parity, and a member of the G-20. Furthermore, Indonesia has made enormous gains in poverty reduction, cutting the poverty rate by more than half since 1999, to 9.78% in 2020. Prior to the COVID-19 crisis, Indonesia was able to maintain a consistent economic growth, recently qualifying the country to reach upper middle-income status. The World Bank (www.worldbank.org/en/country/indonesia/overview) Indeed, when we look at the economic growth charts of the world over the last century, without exception they resemble a J curve with growth over the last half century being particularly rapid. But, from time to time, we need to be reminded that human existence is rather like a coin. Looking at the top side provides one picture but then, when we turn the coin over, a totally different view presents itself. From time to time, pictures find their way to our television screens that remind us that real challenges of poverty are still faced by many today. Similarly, though we have talked about seventyfive years of peace, the other side of the coin reveals that around the globe armed conflict has continued remorselessly since the official ending of World War II in September 2nd 1945. A visit to Wikipedia and its list of ongoing conflicts in the world will inform the casual reader, that in the current or past calendar year there have been over 10,000 deaths related to four major wars – in Afghanistan, the Yemen, Syria and Mexico. In addition, eleven wars, eighteen ‘minor conflicts’ and fifteen ‘skirmishes’ have added to death and misery for many around the world. I make these points in case those of us who are fortunate enough to live in relatively stable, safe and prosperous environments, might be tempted to become complacent and forget how much always needs to be done to increase the welfare of our brothers and sisters throughout the world. Humankind’s end of decade report needs to remind us that, if our progress has generally been steady, there remains area where we still need to improve. Further we need to remember that wealth and material prosperity are not the sole criteria for human well-being and happiness. Quality of life needs to be measured by much more than Gross Domestic Product alone. Such thoughts now seem to be suddenly highlighted, as we move into another new decade. For virtually worldwide, it seems to as if the coin has suddenly been flipped. In 2018 we were looking forward with different expectations to those that we now have since the start of 2020. At a time when the world has never been more interconnected, we have been forcibly reminded that with that connectedness comes a level of risk. There is a belief by some, that interconnectedness provides some sort of protection against war and conflict and that trade relationships provide a rationale for peaceful cooperation between the peoples of the world. However, it is that very interconnectedness that today leaves us at greater risk to the ravages of the latest pandemic to strike the world. Countries that have managed the CoVid19 virus most successfully, have been those like New Zealand that have isolated themselves from others and restricted movements and interactions both across and within borders. Consequently, people in many different settings find themselves in lockdown and working from home. This sudden restriction on interactions and movement, has provided a unique opportunity for reflection by many. Stepping back from the frantic pace of twenty first century lifestyle, though it has inevitably caused much concern economically for many, has given others a chance to rediscover simpler pleasures of previous ages. Pleasures such as the unhurried company of family and friends and the chance to replace crowded commuting with leisurely walks around the local neighbourhood. So, it has been that a number of voices have been pointing to this as a unique opportunity to re-set our careers and our lifestyles. With this comes a chance to re-examine core values and in particular question some of the drivers behind the endlessly busy and often frentic approach to life that characterises our modern fast changing world, with its ceaseless demand for us all to ‘keep up’ and ‘get ahead’. It is then in a spirit of reset that I am pleased to introduce International Sports Studies’ first special supplement. We take very seriously our mission of connecting physical education and sport professionals around the world. It has made us very conscious of the dangers of adopting a view on the world that is centred in the familiar and our own back yards. Yet we all tend to slip into a view of life that seems to be driven and reinforced by the big media and the loudest voices in an interconnected world. Individuals chasing the dream of celebrity are easily recognisable from New Delhi to Anchorage or from Nairobi to Sapporo. We seem forced to listen to them and their ideas even when we wish to disassociate from them. In sport too it seems that in all corners of the world, the superstars of football Messi, Ronaldo, Pogba, Bale are known wherever the game is played. News and influence too often seem to flow from the places where these same celebrities of screen and sporting fields are based. It is the streets and recreation areas of Hollywood, Madrid and Turin, all comparatively restricted areas of the globe, which are continuously brought to us all by the ubiquitous screens. Some of the latest figures from the ITU, the Telecommunication Development Sector a specialised United Nations agency, have estimated that at the end of 2019, 53.6 per cent of the global population, or 4.1 billion people, were using the Internet (ITU, 2020). It is a figure that continues to increase steadily as does the stretch of its influence. The motivation behind this supplement focusing on studies in physical education and sport within Indonesia, can be found in the origins of comparative physical education and sport study. We can all learn by comparison with others and their approaches to both similar and unique problems and challenges. It does not however always make sense to limit ourselves to matching our situations with others for the sole purpose of making scholarly comparisons. Often it makes more sense simply to visit colleagues in another setting and examine in some depth their concerns and practices. Such studies are called area studies and they involve illuminating what is occurring in different settings in order to increase our own understanding and awareness. Indonesia provides a special and important starting point for just such a study. Located off the coast of mainland Southeast Asia in the Indian and Pacific oceans, it is an archipelago that lies across the Equator and spans a distance equivalent to one-eighth of the Earth’s circumference. It is the world’s fourth largest country in terms of population (Legge, 2020). It is a nation that appears modest in its demeanour and that of its people yet has much to offer the rest of us, especially in terms of our common professional interest. The purpose of volume 42e is to offer an opportunity for our colleagues in Indonesia to speak to the global community and for the global community to learn a little more about the work of their colleagues in Indonesia. It is the first of what is intended to be a series within the tradition of comparative studies. It has been a great pleasure and privilege to work with a special editorial team from Indonesia in this project. Their details are briefly provided below. I commend to you the work of this representative group of physical education and sports scholars. I invite you to join us in lifting our heads above our own parapets and resetting our own perspectives by reaching out and listening to a wider circle of colleagues from around the world. We may not be able to travel to meet each other at this time but we can still interact and share, as our responsibility as academics and professionals requires us to do.
