This randomised, placebo-controlled, double-blind intervention study aimed to investigate the effect of oral zinc gluconate supplementation (15 mg/d; 30 mg/d; and placebo) on subjective mood (affect) in older Europeans.SubjectsHealthy volunteers (n 387) aged 55–87 years were recruited.SettingVolunteers in Rome (Italy; n 108) and Grenoble (France; n 91) were aged 70–87 years and those in Coleraine (Northern Ireland; n 93) and Clermont-Ferrand (France; n 95) were aged 55–70 years.DesignMood was measured using the Positive and Negative Affect Scale on four occasions per day over 4 d at baseline, 3 and 6 months post-intervention.ResultsMixed ANOVA indicated that neither positive nor negative affect altered in response to zinc (15 mg/d or 30 mg/d) compared to placebo in either the 55–70 years or the ≥70 years age group.ConclusionsThese results suggest that zinc does not benefit mood in healthy older people.

During the Franco regime between 1939 and 1975, when Spain was under the grip of an official national-catholic ideology whose keystones were the army and church, the torero was used as a vector for Francoist ideology. Courageous, full of national pride and a stout Christian, the torero seemed to incarnate all the virtues of the Spanish, elevated in the Francoist model into the glorified image of the “soldier-monk”. Little research has so far been conducted into parallels drawn between the torero and the “soldier-monk”. Drawing on the analysis of media documents from the Franco period, this paper sets out to address the following question. How does the correlation between the torero and the “soldier-monk” fit with the sad-faced, austere knight-like figure of the matador Manolete (1917-1947) during the 1940s? Within the bullring, spectators (aficionados) and toreros share in intense emotions and a boundless sense of religious devotion that bind them to life while passing close to death.

On July 11, 1984, the 1979 Agreement Governing the Activities of States on the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies entered into force following the deposit with the Secretary-General of the United Nations of the fifth instrument of ratification. The Agreement, following its adoption by the General Assembly, was opened for signature on December 18, 1979. In the intervening years, it has been signed by Austria, Chile, France, Guatemala, India, Morocco, the Netherlands, Peru, the Philippines, Romania and Uruguay. The fifth state to deposit its ratification was Austria, which followed Chile, the Philippines, Uruguay and the Netherlands.

In his Astronomie populaire, Camille Flammarion points out that the heliocentric path of the Moon, which, according to him, has generally been represented as a sinuous curve, is actually concave everywhere towards the Sun. Flammarion’s observation is the starting point of this study which goes backwards in time, via often misinformed authors, to the mathematician who first established this counterintuitive property by means of a purely geometrical proof. The story also includes a heated debate between readers of a British periodical. Beginning in France at the end of the 19th century, the journey finishes in Scotland in the first half of the previous century.

Objective: This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of mental disorders in the population of Martinique, as part of the survey entitled ‘Mental Health in the General Population – Images and Realities’ (Santé Mentale en Population Générale – Images et Réalités). The survey was a multicentre epidemiological study in the general population, conducted in mainland France and French overseas islands between 1997 and 2006, under the authority of the World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Training and Research in Mental Health (Lille, France). Methods: The study took place in 2000. Participants aged 18 years or over were recruited in public places, using the quota sampling method, and interviewed using the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview. Results: A total of 900 participants (52.7% women) with a mean age of 43 years completed the survey. Lifetime prevalence of any mental disorder was 29%. Mood (15%) and anxiety disorders (17%) were the most frequent. The rate of suicide attempts was low (4.2% lifetime), while the frequency of suicidal thoughts was high (11% past month) and similar to the frequency in mainland France. Conclusion: Mental disorders, especially mood and anxiety disorders, were as frequent in Martinique as in mainland France. The lower rates of suicide attempts, in spite of high rates of suicidal thoughts, might deserve further investigation. Our results should strengthen the development of a system of diagnosis and care for these disorders, especially to prevent suicidal behaviours and reduce morbidity and mortality.

The COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdowns modified work environments, lifestyles, and food consumption. Eating habits and mood changes in a French population during the first lockdown were examined using an online self-reported questionnaire with REDCap software through the COVISTRESS.ORG website. In 671 French participants, the main changes during lockdown were increased stress levels (64 [23; 86] vs. 3 [0; 18]) and sedentary behavior (7 [4; 9] vs. 5 [3; 8] hours per day), a deterioration in sleep quality (50 [27; 83] vs. 70 [48; 94]) and mood (50 [30; 76] vs. 78 [50; 92]), and less physical activity (2.0 [0.5; 5.0] vs. 3.5 [2.0; 6.0]). Mood was modified, with more anger (56 [39; 76] vs. 31 [16; 50]), more sadness (50 [34; 72] vs. 28 [16; 50]), more agitation (50 [25; 66] vs. 43 [20; 50]), and more boredom (32 [7; 60] vs. 14 [3; 29]). A total of 25% of the participants increased their consumption of alcoholic beverages, 29% their consumption of sugary foods, and 26% their consumption of cocktail snacks. A multiple-correspondence analysis highlights four different profiles according to changes in eating habits, food consumption, lifestyle, and mood. In conclusion, eating habits and lifestyle changes during lockdown periods should be carefully monitored to promote healthy behaviors.

The encounters of the narrator with alien Lunarian cultures lead to his disappointment. The writer questions all the moral standards, ideals and scientific facts available in his century. Friendship is the only value he does not criticise but estimates.

In the 1940s, several Japanese women writers took up French Indochina as their stage, for example Hasegawa Haruko’s <i>Minami no shojochi (Virgin Soil of the South</i>, Kōanihonsha, 1940), Mori Michiyo’s <i>Harewataru Futsin (Clouds Roll Away Over French Indochina</i>, Muroto shobō, 1942), Kimura Ayako’s <i>Futsu·Tai·Inshōki (Impressions of French Indochina and Thailand</i>, Aidokusha, 1943), and Yoshiya Nobuko’s “Tsuki kara kita otoko” (“The Man from the Moon,” <i>Shufu no Tomo</i>, Shufu no Tomosha, 1942.5-1943.7). In this paper, I will elucidate the major differences and points of commonality between these works. In these texts, these writers express the relationality between Japan and France before and after the joint defence agreement. Hasegawa Haruko and Kimura Ayako, who visited before the joint defence arrangement was concluded, wrote that the French treated them warily, while Yoshiya Nobuko and Mori Michiyo, who visited after “Franco-Japanese Cooperation” had been established, found themselves in friendly French society. After the Japanese occupation began, they also elucidated the disappearance of Parisian colour from French Indochina and the gradual change into a Japanese landscape. These women writers became the best choice for the empire to argue that Japanese culture was superior to French culture without exchanging live fire.

This paper uses data mining from a French project management MOOC to study learners’ performance (i.e., grades and persistence) based on a series of variables: age, educational background, socio-professional status, geographical area, gender, self- versus mandatory-enrollment, and learning intentions. Unlike most studies in this area, we focus on learners from the French-speaking world: France and French-speaking European countries, the Caribbean, North Africa, and Central and West Africa. Results show that the largest gaps in MOOC achievements occur between 1) learners from partner institutions versus self-enrolled learners 2) learners from European countries versus low- and middle-income countries, and 3) learners who are professionally active versus inactive learners (i.e., with available time). Finally, we used the CHAID data-mining method to analyze the main characteristics and discriminant factors of MOOC learner performance and dropout.

The article attempts to interpret a set of signs (points and lines) on two Paleolithic artifacts found by French archaeologists near the town Plugatel (Brittany). The author considers that the sets of signs on archaeological artifacts and folk ornaments hid sacred sets of ancient people and were formed by dividing the cycles of the Sun, the Moon, Venus, and Mercury, as well as the menstrual cycle and the pregnancy cycle of a woman into relatively small (and sacral!) numbers (7, 8, 28 & 5). The presence of the set of 13 on the artifact (Figure 1) in front of the animal's muzzle and 13 “rays” around the bison's head is the basis for concluding that the semantic connection of horned animals and the Sun was already formed in the Paleolithic. This is evidenced by an artifact called «Venus from Laussel», representing an engraved image of a woman holding in her hand either a horn or a sickle moon with 13 lines painted on it. The same number of marks on the animals' horns is found on a number of artifacts of later times. There is every reason to assume that the horns symbolized the Moon, and the 13 signs on them denoted 13 lunar cycles (28 days each) per year. In general, it can be stated that the sets on artifacts from the Plugatel are embedded in the framework of the concept of sacral sets, which was formed by the author based on the study of many archaic artifacts, folk ornaments, and fairy tales.

Abstract “I have examined, O monk, the letter coming from you, the friendship therein proffered, the advice which you offer, and the intention which you disclose.” With these words begins the reply written by the eminent Andalusian Mālikī scholar Abū l-Walīd Sulaymān al-Bājī (d. 1081) to a letter received at the Muslim court of Saragossa from an unidentified ‘monk of France’ inviting the ruler to convert to Christianity. This letter, if authentic, is the earliest extant record of a Christian mission to Muslims in the West. After introducing al-Bājī and situating him in the socio-political and religious circumstances of the time, this article offers a review of past scholarship relating to this correspondence, which has mostly focused on the authenticity of the Christian letter and the possible identification of its author. It is argued in favor of the authenticity of the exchange, offering reasons for it. The article then turns to al-Bājī’s text, seeking to draw from it what it can tell us about him and how he viewed Christians and Christianity.

The introduction of through-running trains between England and France has required the provision of shoegear to run on the British Rail (BR) system, and this shoegear must retract clear of the rail for operation in France and Belgium (SNCF and SNCB). This paper describes the shoegear development work. An initial design concept was compared with existing experience; mock-ups were tested to confirm essential interfaces with the bogie and track, and prototypes were installed on a test train. The paper will describe the experiences of these trials and the running of the pre-series train on BR and SNCF. GEC-Alsthom, the main contractor for the TMST Eurostar trains, awarded the contract for current collection to a joint venture between Brecknell, Willis of Chard, England, and Faiveley SA of Tours, France. The two companies have a total of 180 years experience in electric traction and the shoegear design was to be a joint exercise. A version of this paper was originally presented at the Railtech conference in May 1994; since that time the Eurostars have entered full passenger service and the shoegear has met the requirements of full regular passenger service.

Previous studies have shown that pleasant weather conditions can improve people's mood and facilitate positive social relationships. The current study tested the effect of sunshine on drivers' willingness to give hitchhikers a ride. Four confederates (2 men, 2 women; M age = 20 yr.) acted as hitchhikers on the roadside in France, on sunny and cloudy days. To minimize the influence of other important variables, hitchhiking was conducted only when it was not raining and only when the external temperatures were between 20° and 24 °C. Motorists' behavior in 2,864 hitchhiking events was analyzed. The results showed that both male and female drivers stopped more on sunny days than on cloudy days for both male and female hitchhikers. Perhaps the positive mood induced by the sunshine promotes helping behaviors.

We are witnessing a revolution in the field of mental health in France. The notions of recovery, empowerment and social inclusion drive us to transform our care practices. New care and support schemes are being devised throughout the entire French territory. In France, however, the concrete application of empowerment in the field is rather slow, as the notion’s theoretical complexity and promotion are significant moot points. In this article, we aim to address these French difficulties in order to suggest means of implementing empowerment-centered support methodologies. We demonstrate how this notion is correlated with other theoretical movements and how it overlaps with new notions with the aim of leading an ethical reflection. We also illustrate our reflection with clinical observations from the Un chez soi d’abord (equivalent of the US Housing First scheme) scheme.

The last two years of development of the Russian political system were characterised by the protest mood increasing. Social discontent and various forms of political protest have become a noticeable element of social and political life. It is symptomatic that the protest mood develops during electoral campaigns (that predetermined the victory of the opposition in the elections in a number of regions), and also as a result of development and implementation of the current governmental processes. Considering that elections have been held in the majority of Russian regions during 2017-2019, the attention to the protest movement from various political actors will increase. The authors analyze the forms, main actors and technologies of protests, worked out their typology based on case studies. The current protest mood in Russia is compared with the situation in several EU countries (primarily in France, as well as in Portugal, Poland, Serbia and Greece). In conclusion of the article will be presented the forecasts of the socio-political situation development in the Russian Federation.

В исследовании и получении новых фаз с ценными физико-химическими свойствами важное место отводится тройным соединениям с тетраэдрическим анионом, содержащим различные комбинации одно- и поливалентных катионов, в частности, тройным молибдатам и вольфраматам. Интерес представляют серебросодержащие тройные молибдаты AgA3R(MoO4)5, принадлежащие к структурному типу NaMg3In(MoO4)5 (триклинная сингония, пр. гр. P1, Z = 2) и обладающие достаточно высокой ионной проводимостью (10–3–10–2 См/cм). В связи с этим, целью даннойработы явилось установление возможности образования подобных соединений в молибдатных и вольфраматных системах серебра, цинка, индия и железа и выявление влияния природы тетраэдрического аниона и трехзарядных катионов на их получение и свойства.Синтез поликристаллических образцов осуществляли по керамической технологии. Методами исследования являлись дифференциально-термический и рентгенофазовый анализы.В результате выполнения работы получены новые тройные молибдаты AgZn3R(MoO4)5 (R = In, Fe), кристаллизующиеся в триклинной сингонии (пр. гр. P1, Z = 2). Определены последовательность химических превращений, протекающих при образовании этих соединений, их кристаллографические и термические характеристики. Параметры элементарной ячейки для индиевого соединения: a = 6.9920(4), b = 7.0491(4), c = 17.9196(9) Å, a = 87.692(5), b = 87.381(5),g = 79.173(5)°; для железного: a = 6.9229(3), b = 6.9828(4), c = 17.7574(8) Å, a = 87.943(4), b = 87.346(5), g = 78.882(5)°.Установлено, что серебросодержащие тройные вольфраматы цинка с индием и железом, обладающие подобной структурой, не образуются.

Cette étude mobilise une posture socio-constructiviste qui met en évidence les différentes interactions entre le MOOC et l’apprenant. Dans ce contexte, l’apprenant est considéré comme un organisme qui crée sa propre signification à travers les échanges qu’il a avec son environnement. Les travaux de recherche de Cascioli (2020) ont montré que les apprenants utilisent leurs formes de représentations pour agir de manière symbolique sur le monde conceptuel, en générant ainsi de nouvelles. Le parcours MOOC est donc considéré comme un outil numérique qui permet d’optimiser et d’élargir le processus d’apprentissage en termes de traitement, analyse et problématisation de l’information ainsi que de création de nouvelles représentations (Cox, 2013). Deux questions sont posées dans cette publication : Quelles sont les attentes d’apprentissage des apprenants qui suivent un MOOC ? Peut-on les catégoriser en fonction du profil managérial de l’apprenant ? Un traitement statistique sur 3 760 observations en relation avec le MOOC managérial le plus suivi de France, le MOOCLead de Cécile Dejoux au CNAM, permet par un cluster two steps d’identifier trois catégories d’apprenants : les « les novices », managers débutants, « les éveillés », managers intermédiaires, et « les avertis », managers confirmés. Chacune de ces catégorie fait état d’attentes distinctes, allant d’un apprentissage général des compétences numériques du manager de demain, à un approfondissement, voir, à une mise en perspective.

Modern migration discourse contributes to the securitization of migration in France: it is transferred to the security field, endowed with threat connotations, and thus is becoming the direct cause of the security deficit. The agents of securitization (representatives of the country’s supreme power or right-wing political movements, or writers and essayists who recognize themselves as independent from any political party’s influence and who, however, still share the anti-immigration mood of the right-wing political movement. They use elements of the discourse of fear to achieve their own political goals; they present immigrants as a mortal threat not only to the national identity of the state and the integrity of its society, but also to its public and national security. In the discourse of these agents, there is a clear tendency to create an image of a France “abandoned” by the government and “besieged” by immigrants, a France as a subject to “colonization” by Islam that is incompatible with the secular principle the country that supports republican ideals. Analysis of the migration discourse of securitization agents reveals bold metaphors and emotionally charged expressions that generate a sense of fear in society and give rise to misconceptions about the scale of immigration and the size of the Muslim population in the country.

Introduction: Psychiatric trainees lack psychotherapy training. In 2018, the European Psychiatric Association (EPA) offered a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), “Introduction to Cognitive Behavioural Therapy”. We will present an overview of the course participants and engagement metrics, and propose improvements for future courses. Methods: Non-identifiable participant information was collected through a welcome survey. Additional data were internally extracted, including demographic information, interests, educational background, learning objectives, completion and satisfaction rate. Engagement strategy questionnaires were distributed and screen time calculated. Results: There were 7.116 enrollments, 1.504 completed the welcome survey and 954 (13%) the overall course. The three most represented countries were: Greece (18%), France (8%) and the UK (7%). Psychologists and psychology students represented 41% of the initial participants, psychiatrists and psychiatry trainees 33%. Conclusion: The MOOC achieved its primary goals and received a wide acceptance. The dropout rate was lower than similar online courses. Improvements and amendments are suggested.

There is a long history of Theravada Buddhist monk involvement in militarism in mainland Southeast Asia. Here, I examine recent Lao monk support for political and military activities directed against the communist Lao People's Democratic Republic government and its Vietnamese supporters since 1975. Monks have not become directly involved in armed conflict, as monastic rules do not allow participation in offensive violent acts, or arms trading, but they have played various important roles in supporting armed resistance against the Lao government. Some monks assisting insurgents have been shot in Thailand. Now most of the Lao insurgent-supporting monks live in the United States, Canada, and France, where a few continue to assist the political resistance against the Lao government, arguing that providing such support does not contradict Buddhist teachings. This article demonstrates how Lao Buddhist monks have negotiated religious conduct rules in the context of strong nationalistic convictions.

During his stay in Rome (1553–1557), Joachim Du Bellay composed the collection of sonnets Les Antiquités de Rome, often overshadowed by the more famous Les Regrets. However, the charm of the poems dedicated to the eternal city, and the history of its greatness and fall, is increasingly appreciated. The poet consistently describes the impressions of a sixteenth-century visitor contemplating the image of the ancient city from which only ruins seem to have remained. The mood of melancholy is built by a specific construction of images and appropriately selected vocabulary. It is a vision of the city turned into ruin, where even the honor is turned into ‘ashes’, and the only remnants of the past glory is its name. However, the poet does not want to leave the reader in a mood of despondency, and carefully interweaves melancholic and optimistic motifs: traces of the greatness of ancient Rome have survived in the finest literary works, and Du Bellay himself emphasizes that he is the first French poet to describe the glory of the eternal city. This is also important because the collection is dedicated to King Henry II and is probably conceived to show him the path that France should follow in striving for the perfection of the Roman empire, while avoiding its weaknesses. Therefore, the collection is not only a melancholic reminiscence of ancient Rome, but also a canzoniere dedicated to the beautiful city, where one can find inspiration to build France in the spirit of Gallicanism.

In modern France, power and society are developing in different directions. President E. Macron has built a rigid “vertical of power”, which was further strengthened under the conditions of the COVID-19 pandemic. Power in France has exceptional autonomy and an ability to make and implement decisions that do not have public support. The president can implement reforms by decree, and the prime minister – relying on the Article 49.3 of the Constitution, which allows laws to be passed without a vote in parliament. Society, in turn, has become more demanding in the field of obtaining individual rights and expanding political rights. While power was growing more and more “vertical”, society developed in the opposite direction. The individual rights of citizens have expanded (legalization of same-sex unions and sex change); French citizens have become more demanding of representative institutions and politicians. It is customary to consider French society depoliticized. In reality, modern French people, even if they don’t go to the polls and don’t trust political parties, are interested in politics. The mood of “critical citizenship” has become widespread in society, an increasing number of citizens would like to participate in political decision-making, and the ideas of direct democracy are very popular. The multidirectional development of society and power inevitably gives rise to a systemic socio-political conflict. The protests against raising the retirement age from 62 to 64 that unfolded in France in 2023 were a continuation of the protest movements of past years. Three scenarios for the development of the political situation in France are formulated: normalization; political crisis and way out of it; renewal of the political regime.

Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) platforms incorporate large course catalogs from which individual students may register multiple courses. We performed a network-based analysis of student achievement, considering how course-course interactions may positively or negatively affect student success. Our data set included 378,000 users and 1,000,000 unique registration events in France Université Numérique (FUN), a national MOOC platform. We adapt reliability theory to model certificate completion rates with a Weibull survival function, following the intuition that students “survive” in a course for a certain time before stochastically dropping out. Course-course interactions are found to be well described by a single parameter for user engagement that can be estimated from a user’s registration profile. User engagement, in turn, correlates with certificate rates in all courses regardless of specific content. The reliability approach is shown to capture several certificate rate patterns that are overlooked by conventional regression models. User engagement emerges as a natural metric for tracking student progress across demographics and over time.

The article examines the origin of two related maxims: «There is nothing new except what has been forgotten» and «There is nothing new under the moon». The Russian form of the first maxim («The new is the old well forgotten») belongs, probably, to the publicist N.V. Shelgunov. Initially, the first maxim appeared in England and France, and for a long time existed in two versions. The earliest of them (c. 1820) was usually attributed to Rose Bertin, the milliner of Marie Antoinette. The second («There is nothing new but what it has been old») is a quote from Chaucer’s «Canterbury Tales» in Walter Scott’s version («The Adventures of Nigell», 1822). In Germany and Russia, only the first, «Bertin’s version» was in circulation. One of the probable sources of Karamzin’s family sayings «Nothing is new under the moon» was the maxim «Il n’y a rien de nouveau sous la Lune», which appeared at the end of the 17 th century in the novel «Turkish Spy» by Giovanni Paolo Marana.

Intervention missions, that is, underwater manipulation tasks, for example, in the context of oil-&-gas production, require a high amount of precise, robust navigation. In this article, we describe the use of an advanced vision system suited for deep-sea operations, which in combination with artificial markers on target structures like oil-&-gas production-Christmas-trees significantly boosts navigation performance. The system is validated in two intensive field tests running off the shore of Marseille, France. In the experiments, a commercial remotely operated vehicle equipped with the system and a mock-up structure with an oil-&-gas production panel is used to evaluate the navigation performance.

Grigory Krug, who was born in St. Petersburg, in a Swedish family, ended up in Estonia after the revolution, and then emigrated to France. Here he studied with the leading masters of the Silver Age and the avant-garde, entered the sphere of the artistic elite of Paris, began a successful exhibition activity. But soon he took up icon painting, became a monk and became one of the most famous Russian icon painters of the Paris school, whom the press called the new Andrei Rublev. Today, the work of Grigory Krug is becoming particularly relevant.

Abstract. Für das in den Nordvogesen liegende Moor Rond Pertuis supérieure wurde ein mit der 14C-Methode datiertes Pollenprofil erstellt. Das Profil umfasst einen Zeitraum vom mittleren Atlantikum (4500–3100 Jahre v. Chr.) bis heute. Während der Mitte des Atlantikums bedeckte ein kiefernreicher Eichenmischwald die Nordvogesen. Tanne und Buche wanderten am Ende des Atlantikums ein und führten zu einem Rückgang des Eichen- und Kiefernwaldes. Zu dieser Zeit begann auch der maßgebliche menschliche Einfluss in die Vegetationsentwicklung. Fünf Landnutzungsphasen konnten differenziert werden, die Erste am Ende des Neolithikums (~4000–2200 v. Chr.). Von der Bonzezeit an (2200–800 v. Chr.) bis in heutige Zeit ist eine kontinuierliche Landnutzung nachweisbar. Im Spätmittelalter (900–1500 n. Chr.) und der Neuzeit (1500 n. Chr. bis heute) haben sich die Wälder durch die Nutzung vollständig verändert. Im 19. Jahrhundert ist die Fichte in das Untersuchungsgebiet in den Nordvogesen eingeführt worden. In der Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts wurde die Fichtenaufforstung forciert.

The Musée du Quay Branly held an international symposium, “From Anatomic Collections to Objects of Worship: Conservation and Exhibition of Human Remains in Museums,” in Paris on February 22–23, 2008, at the museum's Théatre Claude Levy Strauss. The main purpose of the 2-day conference—opened by the French Ministry of Culture and Communication's Christine Albanel—was to stimulate an international debate on a multidisciplinary basis concerning the roles and responsibilities of museums in the exhibition and repatriation of human remains. The subject turned out to be topical, originating from the case of thetoi moko, the Maori tattooed head belonging to the collection of the Natural History Museum in Rouen, France, since 1875. The restitution of thetoi mokoto the Papa Museum in Wellington, New Zealand, deliberated by the city of Rouen, was recently banned by the Administrative Tribunal of Rouen, on request of the Ministry of Culture at the end of 2007. The head actually belonged to a municipal museum, which was in fact part of the Musées de France, and therefore it was considered part of a public collection. Accordingly, the 2002 French statute providing for the inalienability of state properties was applicable.

AbstractThe European Study of the Epidemiology of Mental Disorders (ESEMeD) project is the first cross-national European survey to collect data on prevalence, risk factors, health-related quality of life and use of services associated with common mental disorders. Representative samples of the non-institutionalized populations of Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Spain were interviewed using the CIDI 3.0, totaling 21,425 adult individuals. There was important variation across countries in prevalence estimates of the disorders studied, with Belgium and France in the highest proportions and Italy and Spain the lowest. Comorbidity of mood and anxiety disorders was frequent in all countries. Use of services due to mental health is low in all European countries, but especially low in Italy. Remarkably, only about one in five participants with a mental disorder had consulted the health services in the prior year. We discuss about the possible explanations of cross-national differences in prevalence estimates of mental disorders, and some of the limitations of the data on alcohol abuse and dependence gathered in the study. We conclude that despite the advances in knowledge about determinants and treatment methods, the care of the mentally ill is rather limited in Europe.

Moon-shaped idols comprise a very specific and variable category of ceramic, rarely even stone, artefacts. The beginnings of their occurrence and spread in Central Europe can be connected with the cultures of Urnfields, especially the Upper Danube and Middle Danube groups. Their development subsequently continued in the Early Iron Age, when they spread beyond Central Europe to northeast Spain and north Italy. The total number of finds currently exceeds the estimate from 2004, which was around two thousand individual items. The find environment of these products is relatively variable. They usually appear in settlements, but also in situations that can be considered manifestations of cult behaviour. In southeast France and south Germany, some of the moon-shaped idols are found in the context of graves from the Late Bronze Age. Graves equipped in this way can be recorded at the burial grounds of the Bylany and Kalenderberg cultures and in the environment of the Lusatian Urnfields of the Early Iron Age mainly in East Bohemia and Polish Silesia.

Emotional freedom techniques (EFTs) are an innovative combined somatic and cognitive therapy. Derived from key principles within traditional Chinese medicine, they incorporate elements of exposure, cognitive and other conventional psychotherapies. Increasing evidence suggests that EFTs are effective in treating various physical and psychological conditions and across several population groups. Studies indicate that the somatic component is essential to its ease of use, rapid effect and durability of results. EFTs can be used as self-help tools or applied therapeutically in groups or individually. There is a lack of research specifically examining its applicability to older adults, but a ground-breaking project with nurses in France suggests that EFTs may offer significant potential to moderate pain and stress levels and to improve mood, interaction and quality of life among this group, including those with multiple and complex comorbidities.

Hypothetical conditionals like If you are hungry, your stomach is growling and ‘biscuit’ conditionals like If you are hungry, there is pizza in the fridge have been analysed as sharing the same syntactic and semantic template, differing only in the presence of an additional pragmatic inference leading to the ‘biscuit’ effect in the latter case (Franke 2009: a.o.). However, when considering their counterfactual versions, the two forms differ in the verbal morphological make-up of the consequent clause, which posits a challenge to the unified approach. The present papers develops an analysis of tense and mood morphology within the unified approach where the key idea is that counterfactuals biscuits involve breaking Sequence of Tense and so-called Sequence of Mood. Unacceptable biscuit and hypothetical forms are ruled out via pragmatic competition between weaker and stronger forms and via the Gricean Principle of Manner.

Background: Poor social interactions have been recognized as a symptom since the beginnings of psychiatry. As far as socially withdrawn youth (SWY) are concerned, studies were mostly conducted on patients seeking care. Our psychiatric outreach team called Psymobile was able to reach SWY patients who were not seeking mental health care. Aims: To identify the clinical and socio-demographic characteristics of SWY patients referred to our Psymobile unit. Method: We carried out a retrospective study on the records of patients aged 18–34 years, who were referred to Psymobile for ‘withdrawal’, between April 2012 and December 2015. Results: In total, 66 patients were included in the study. SWY are predominantly male (80%) from large families or single-parent ones. About 42% had no prior contact with a mental health professional before being referred to Psymobile. The mean duration of withdrawal is 29 months. In all, 42% of SWY use cannabis and 73% present disorders of the sleep–wake schedule. About 71% maintain relations with their families and 73% go out occasionally. They are mostly diagnosed with schizophrenia (37%) or mood disorders (23%). Conclusion: Over one-third of Psymobile patients aged 18–34 years were referred on grounds of social withdrawal. Our data may illustrate more accurately the situation of youth social withdrawal amid the general population than data from help-seeking patients or online questionnaires.

In the fourteenth century, a new kind of religious drama gained popularity in France, the miracle play or miracle par personnages. The genre originated in the numerous legends of the Virgin Mary in both Latin and French, of which the most famous are those collected by the thirteenth-century monk Gautier de Coincy. The miracle play was intended for the edification of the people, and its overarching theme is the Blessed Virgin's intercession in favour of mortals who have gone astray or who are otherwise in distress. The earliest-recorded dramatisation of the non-scriptural miracles attributed to Mary is Rutebeuf's well-known Miracle de Théophile, in which the cleric Theophilus rashly sells his soul to the devil and does his bidding for seven years; then, repenting of his sins and transgressions he invokes the aid of Mary, who conquers the devil and restores Theophilus to the path of righteousness. However, the major source of our knowledge of miracle plays is the two-volume Cangé manuscript (Bibliothèque nationale de France MS fr. 819-820), a remarkable record of dramatic production comprising forty miracles composed and performed in Paris, over the lengthy period between 1339 and 1382, during the annual assembly of the Saint-Éloi Gold and Silversmiths' Guild.

Background: Burnout syndrome (BOS) impacts health workers and has become a real public health issue. The primary objective of this observational study was to re-evaluate the incidence of BOS among anesthesiologists and intensivists (AI) in France, ten years after the SESMAT study, a French Physician Health Survey carried out among burnout salaried AI. The secondary objective was to investigate risks factors. Methods: The REPAR survey is an observational study carried in France among AI, residents, and seniors, whatever their main mode of practice, in the framework of a self-questionnaire distributed on the Internet from 11 April 2018 to 1 July 2018. BOS was assessed using the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory (CBI). A score above 50% on two of the dimensions (personal burnout and work-related burnout) indicated BOS, as a main criterion. In order to investigate risks factors, questions were about sociodemographic characteristics, professional and extraprofessional environments, personality and mood using the Major Depression Inventory (MDI). A significance threshold of p < 0.05 was retained. Results: Among 1519 questionnaires received, 1500 completed questionnaires were analyzed. There were 775 men (52%) and 721 women (48%), aged 23 to 74 years. Among those, 24% suffered from BOS, 9% showed depressive symptoms (MDI > 25) and 35% were considering changing jobs or stopping their studies. There was no significant difference with the SESMAT study for the general BOS score. After multivariate analysis, 12 variables were significantly associated with the main criterion. Conclusions: Ten years after the SESMAT study, the incidence of BOS in AI has not decreased in the largest cohort of AI studied to date in France.

Abstract. In France, sirens have been the principal tool designated to alert the population in the case of danger. However, their efficacity has not been objectively tested. Using a geographical information system, questionnaires, and surveys, we analyzed (1) the spatial distribution of the siren network in relation to the covered population, the hazards threatening different areas, and the actual number of disasters that have occurred in the past, (2) the political dilemma of activating sirens, and (3) the population's trust in sirens, as well as its understanding of expected behavior in the case of an emergency. Results show that, with a few exceptions, siren coverage in France is primarily determined by population density, not by the expected hazards or the cumulative number of past disasters. Sirens are also rarely used by the authorities. However, surveyed members of the population identify sirens as the most effective alert system over other alternatives such as cell-phone-based alerting tools. In a “mock” emergency most members of the public did not know how to respond in the case of an emergency, and even most of those who correctly identified the appropriate response prior to the exercise did not react upon later hearing the siren. To improve the effectiveness of the French siren network, we recommend (1) relocating sirens to optimize their efficiency, (2) complementing the sound of sirens with a clear and unified message, (3) reorganizing the competencies to activate siren alerts, and finally (4) improving public education on different alert tools and expected behavior during an emergency.

The adoption of various forms of distance education, particularly MOOCs (an acronym for Massive Open Online Courses), by universities worldwide has continuously gained momentum over the past decade. This is due not only to the importance of maintaining a parallel educational model alongside face-to-face courses in order to complete students’ training, but also in response to the limits of academic infrastructure faced with an increasingly large mass of learners, typically in emerging countries. Universities view MOOCs as a remedy to this dilemma—one which promises reasonable development costs—especially taking into account the ubiquity of the internet and digital communication tools. In a country such as Morocco, whose university capacity has been stretched to 186%, the quest to dematerialize lectures can support universities in producing well-rounded professional profiles as well as improving institutional and academic services overall. In this paper, we present the feedback from Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdellah University concerning its first scientific MOOC, launched within the framework of the MarocUniversitéNumérique (Morocco Digital University) or MUN project in collaboration with the France UniversitéNumérique (France Digital University) or FUN platform. The objectives of this paper are threefold: to assess the possibility of adopting further MOOCs in a Moroccan setting, to seek insight on the profiles of learners who have completed MOOCs and to draw lessons in order to improve future experiences.

SummaryIntroduction.Few data exist to estimate the burden of manic episodes on healthcare systems or the therapeutic strategies used. This study was undertaken to identify treatment strategies chosen, and to assess the “real-world” direct medical cost of treating manic episodes necessitating hospitalisation.Method.Case record data were reviewed during the three months following hospitalisation for a manic episode in France. Healthcare resource utilisation was assessed, direct costs calculated, and treatment strategies analysed. A total of 137 patients files (51.8% female; mean age: 35 years) were reviewed and data on 185 hospitalisations collected.Results.The mean duration of hospitalisation was 47 days over the study period. The most common treatment strategy during hospitalisation was the combination of a mood stabiliser with a neuroleptic drug (64% of patients at day 30). Anticonvulsants including valproate (39%) and carbamazepine (20%) were more common than lithium (42%). Treatment received during hospitalisation was generally continued after discharge, with a trend away from neuroleptics and towards mood stabilisers. The mean direct costs incurred over the three-month study period was Euro 22 297, with 98.6% of those costs due to hospitalisation.Conclusion.These results confirm that the costs of treating a manic episode are high, and overwhelmingly due to the cost of hospitalisation.

The French Dominican monk and artist, Marie-Alain Couturier (1897–1954) was initially trained as a painter. He went on to become a friar at Le Saulchoir in Belgium, receiving his ordination in 1930. Largely recognized as the figure at the centre of the debate on the role of apostolic art in the 1940s and 1950s in France, he was a friend of many pioneers of modernist art, such as Braque, Matisse, and Picasso. Through this, he was an interlocutor between the secular domain of modernist aesthetics and the clergy’s religious world. Drawing on an unknown work of Couturier’s, the central thesis of the paper is that his thought was defined by heterogeneity and contradiction. In this manner, his thoughts on art and religion problematize and reconfigure any straightforward causal narrative which announces the unilateral victory of secular ideas.

AbstractThe purpose of this paper is to describe the lifelong work of the Czech Dominican monk and theologian Silvestr Braito (1898–1962). Braito ascribed significant importance to ecclesiology as a prerequisite for effective pastoral work, which he understood as a process of ongoing intellectual education of the faithful as well as their spiritual formation. Ecclesiology underwent a dramatic development in the twentieth century, particularly in Germany and France. Braito, while avoiding the more controversial issues, followed this discussion and presented its main themes to the Czech speaking Christian public. He considered a deep knowledge of the Church indispensable for a sound spiritual life. In this context, a dynamic comprehension of the relation between God and the human person, which Braito liked to express as 'sonship of God', presents his distinctive contribution to a practical pastoral-oriented application of ecclesiology.
