The paper analyses statues of Mary the Victorious (Maria victrix, Santa Maria de Victoria, Marija Zmagovalka, Maria vom Siege, Gyözedelmes Immaculata) in the fortified cities at the south-eastern frontier of the Habsburg Monarchy, highlighting some previously unidentified examples of this iconographic type in Petrovaradin and Alba Iulia. These cities were part of a comprehensive fortification system conceived by Eugene of Savoy following Habsburg victories over the Ottomans under his leadership. The paper examines comparative graphic, painterly, and sculptural works that may have influenced the authors of these sculptures. Notably, two altarpieces by Carlo Maratta (1625–1713), executed in the 1660s for the Franciscan church of S. Isidoro Agricola in Rome and the church of S. Agostino in Siena, emerge as highly influential in this context, with numerous artworks modelled upon them. The iconographic type of Mary the Victorious depicts the joint triumph of the Virgin Mary and her Child over Evil, with Christ piercing the personification of evil at their feet with a cross-shaped spear. This paper associates this specific iconographic choice with the origin of these artworks near the Habsburg-Ottoman frontier, interpreting it as an expression of Catholic and Habsburg triumphal rhetoric and propaganda. Some examples suggest probable Jesuit influence, as they were among the primary promoters of this iconographic type. In Osijek, a city of exceptional strategic importance on the south-eastern Habsburg-Ottoman frontier, the iconographic type of Mary the Victorious is represented by two examples. The earlier, more elaborate one, tentatively dated to the 1730s, originally adorned the city gate of Osijek’s fortress Tvrđa. In 1784, together with three other statues, it was placed on the outer perimeter of the Holy Trinity monument in the centre of Tvrđa. The second Osijek example is located in the Lower Town and dated by an inscription to 1757, when it was erected as a votive statue against the plague. Two public statues of Mary the Victorious are located in Petrovaradin, the second most important fortress on the south-eastern frontier of the Habsburg Monarchy. Unlike those from Osijek, the Petrovaradin statues are not free-standing, but inserted into the façade niches of public buildings in the suburbs of the Petrovaradin fortress. The polychromous wooden statue on the building of the Šajkaš Battalion stands out for its quality, with stylistic features pointing to the early decades of the 18th century. The second statue is located in the niche of the nearby Bridge Toll Office building. It is argued that the Jesuits or the Franciscans may have selected this iconographic type, as they were the key promoters of Mary the Victorious. The statues were probably commissioned to commemorate Mary’s role in the Christian victory over the Ottomans near Petrovaradin in 1716, as their locations suggest. Mary’s role as the saintly protector against the plague, which struck the area in 1738, should also be considered. In Alba Iulia, which was the easternmost point of Eugene’s chain of fortified cities, Mary the Victorious is the central statue on the side altar in the cathedral of St Michael, constructed around 1754. In conclusion, the paper presents two examples of sculptural and painterly depictions of Mary the Victorious in the wider frontier area (Požega, Valpovo), commissioned by the Jesuits or members of the Habsburg elite, since due to specific political circumstances, they emerge as key patrons of significant artworks in this region.

This article continues the analysis of the Mari text of the book “The Beginnings of Christian doctrine ...”, published in Kazan in 1841. Previously (see [Klyucheva 2021]), the verb morphology (conjugation) in it was described. This work describes the noun morphology in “The Beginnings…” — the case system of nouns in the singular. In continuation of this work, we plan to consider the categories of number and possession. The case system in “The Beginnings…” includes all the 9 cases of the modern standard Mari (Meadow-Eastern) language and also abessive and ablative. The presence of the causative (case) with the indicator -lanen is questionable: it occurs in “The Beginnings…” in a single example with a pronoun. The analysis of noun morphology in “The Beginnings…” is made in comparison with the standard Mari (Meadow-Eastern) language and Meadow dialects. Its specificity lies primarily at the phonetic level: in the vocalism of unstressed syllables and the stress system. The system of vowels includes labial reduced u and ü. They are expressed in “The Beginnings…” by the letters о, у, ю, and are located on the border between the stem and the case affix (after labial vowels in the stem). In the standard language, only the non-labial reduced vowel ǝ̂ occurs in this position. Such vowel harmony in the language of “The Beginnings…” corresponds to the western subdialects of the Meadow dialect, especially the Volga subdialect. As regards the stress system, in “The Beginnings…” in the comitative, dative, ablative, partly in the lativе the stress is kept on the same syllable as in the nominative, while in the literary norm and in modern Meadow dialects all these case suffixes are under stress (only in the dative is the stress fluctuation allowed). This indicates changes in the system of stresses in the Meadow dialect since the creation of the monument. The article also shows examples of non-standard use of case forms (mainly inessive, accusative and genitive). They may reflect some poorly studied functions of cases in Meadow dialects. The results of the study of the case correlate with the previously obtained conclusions about the Volga dialect as the dialectal basis of this written monument. It reflects not only the modern, but also the historical features of this dialect.

AbstractDuring the eleventh and twelfth centuries the Church began a process of renovation (renovatio) and the city of Rome was given new meanings. Antiquity is part of the identity of the Eternal City; the reuse or reframing of aspects of antiquity inevitably transformed the image of Rome. Public spaces, architecture and objects were given new Christian readings. Inscriptions, present both in sacred and secular settings, played an important role. A similar rewriting can also be found in travel literature and descriptions of the city, such as in the Mirabilia urbis Rome, where ancient monuments were re-interpreted to demonstrate the superiority of Christianity. Inscriptions were used as symbols of authority, as can be seen in the altar of the church of Santa Maria in Portico, in the papal thrones (San Clemente, Santa Maria in Cosmedin, San Lorenzo fuori le mura) and also in mosaics (San Clemente, Santa Maria in Trastevere). Inscriptions appeared on porticoed atriums built on new churches and added to older foundations, and they were used to renew ancient monuments and places. The Roman Commune used a similar strategy with civil buildings. The image of Rome was transformed through restoration and new construction that used spolia as meaningful objects, and inscriptions for their authoritative value.

Abstract Antonio Maria Valsalva was a renowned anatomist, physiologist, and surgeon who made significant contributions to the field of science, particularly in otology. A monument dedicated to him is located on the wall of the Archiginnasio Palace in Bologna, indicating the high regard in which he was held by his peers. The aim of this study is to analyze the monument, revealing the hidden messages about the scientist. In our analysis of the monument dedicated to Valsalva, we also conducted research on Valsalva’s life and contributions to the field of science, with a focus on otology. Our study revealed that the fresco paints a comprehensive picture of Valsalva and his achievements as one of the leading figures in the history of medicine and otology. This is particularly conveyed by the four putti surrounding the fresco, which symbolize various aspects of Valsalva’s extraordinary career and impact on the field of science. The monument dedicated to Antonio Maria Valsalva serves as a lasting tribute to his legacy and contributions to the field of Science.

ABSTRACTThis essay maintains that John Foxe has been under-utilized as a source of early modern English social history. Accordingly, the mid-Tudor portions of the Acts and monuments of Foxe are examined with reference to such topics as the size of early modern families, the roles of spouses within marriage, the status of romantic love and marriage, and the treatment of children. In addition to these familiar categories, however, the essay also asks whether the protestant community of the Marian era was forming a coherent vision of the family as part of its strategy of survival, and whether the catholic authorities were aware of this and attempted to thwart its development. The possibility of a connection between the protestant emphasis on rediscovering the heart of the Christian gospel and a renewed emphasis on the biblical vision of family is raised, together with a discussion of the English reformers' concern that families not serve as hindrances in the advancement of the kingdom of God at that critical juncture in the life of the nation.

D.V. Aynalov (1862—1939), a Russian Byzantinist, art critic and historian of Russian art, during his years at Kazan University (1890—1903) studied the issues of ancient Christian culture. For the first time, the article involves Aynalov’s newly studied iconographic heritage, which allows describing the creative laboratory of the Byzantinist and his original method of analyzing monuments. The author finds that the development of a new research methodology was facilitated by the expansion of the empirical base, which, in addition to apocryphal texts, included Aynalov’s own drawings, and photographs of monuments made by order of the scientist. In the article, D.V. Aynalov’s lectures on “Ancient Christian Art” are introduced into scientific circulation for the first time, allowing to reveal the argumentation of the scientist’s main idea about the connection between the late Antique style and early Christian art. Aynalov made two important discoveries in the history of Christian art. The first discovery was that, using the example of the mosaics of the church of Santa Maria Maggiore, Aynalov managed to identify an important moment in the transformation of the image of the Virgin Mary into the image of the royal Virgin. The second discovery was the transformation of the symbolic image of Christ in the form of a lamb into the image in the form of a man, using the example of the mosaics of Albenga. The implementation of a comprehensive interpretation of Aynalov’s iconographic heritage in the context of his ideas allows us to understand the scientist’s system of evidence and reveal his original concept of the development of Christian art in the West and East. His research made a significant contribution to the new concept of the universal history of art, in which a special place belonged to Byzantium, and later to ancient Russian art. Aynalov’s works contributed a great deal to the development of the scientific base on Christian art, art history and Byzantine studies in Kazan. The republication of D.V. Aynalov’s legacy of the Kazan period is of interest for both modern Byzantine studies and the history of cultural studies.

Manuscripts and keepsakes after Maria Konopnicka in the Scientific Library of the PAAS and the PAS in Cracow collection On the occasion of proclaiming Maria Konopnicka one of the patrons of the year 2022, the manuscripts and keepsakes after her gathered in the Scientific Library of PAAS and the PAS in Cracow will be presented. The collection contains the poetess’s 48 hand-written letters addressed to i.a. Teofil Lenartowicz, Stanislaw Tomkowicz and, also to Józef Tretiak and Adolf Pawiński, which until now remained unpublished. Apart from the correspondence, the Library collection includes also 23 shelf marks related to Maria Konopnicka. These are among others some writings regarding her literary activity as well as poems and their copies prepared by i.a. a famous painter, Bronislawa Rychter-Janowska. Worth to pay attention to are also three photographies of the poet included in the collection. The documentation of a monument designed by Janina Reichert-Toth, planned by the Lviv city authorities to commemorate Maria Konopnicka but which failed to be built due to the outbreak of World War II, has been preserved. The vast majority of works related to Konopnicka were donated to the Library, only some were purchased in antiquarian bookshops.

This paper examines the relationships between monumental commemoration and memory, placing Rachel Whiteread's Memorial to the Austrian Jewish Victims of the Shoah (2000) as the physical manifestation of Derrida's archive as a place where memory, power, writing and representation intersect. I consider the context and characteristics of Whiteread's memorial alongside the concept of the crypt, formulated by Derrida in his ‘Fors’ to Nicolas Abraham and Maria Torok's The Wolf Man's Magic Word (1976). I propose that the archive, formed as it as around the crypt, is a place where death and desire co-habit, and that the Holocaust, the subject of Whiteread's sculpture, is itself an archive that has been constructed around what Maria Torok terms the ‘exquisite corpse’. This exquisite corpse of the Holocaust encrypts, even in its own commemoration, the erotics and desires of the ‘Nazi father’ or ‘Hitler in uns’, what Derrida terms ‘the tombstone of the illicit’. This paper poses the question that we are, even as we remember the Jewish dead, simultaneously re-encrypting the forgetful, murderous Nazi father, and advocates that we maintain a watchfulness on the threshold of the archive, the monument, the text, in order to resist total resolution, complete meaning, the forgetful re-inscription of acts of atrocity.

Video mapping is defined as a particular form of augmented reality capable of transforming any surface, flat or irregular, into a dynamic surface capable of enriching human sensory perception. Video mapping projections can become a medium to link the historical facts and the location by means of the valorisation of the monument and narration of its story through images and sounds. This paper aims to show how video mapping, beyond its purely technological aspect, can be linked to cultural heritage and represents a tool capable of becoming a mediator of culture, tradition, and legends. It is used to pass on and tell the legend of the foundation of the present Cathedral of Maria Santissima della Madia in Monopoli through the animation of the pictorial cycle by Nicolò Maria Signorile preserved in the church.

The sole surviving monumental column from the Basilica of Maxentius and Constantine is the focus of Paul V, the Column of the Virgin, and the New Pax Romana. In 1613 Pope Paul V removed and re-erected this column at the center of Piazza S. Maria Maggiore in Rome, crowning it with a gilded bronze statue of the Virgin and Child. After reconstructing the little-known history of the monument and situating it within the history of honorific columns and Paul's urban planning, Steven F. Ostrow examines the antiquarian interest it long held, what was known about its original context, and the symbolic associations with which it was endowed. This close reading of Paul's monument demonstrates how, by appropriating the column and topping it with a statue of the Virgin, the pope eloquently expressed the Church's longstanding belief in Mary as a bringer of peace and the protector of Rome.

Abstract The funerary monument of Bona Sforza, Duchess of Bari and Queen of Poland, in the Basilica of San Nicola in Bari has been a subject of discussion since the uncovering, in 1918, of documents which assign the marble authorship to a team of minor sculptors working in Naples around 1589–1593. Whilst research has focused on the history of this sepulchre, the name of the architect whom the queen’s daughter and heir, Anna Jagiellon, commissioned to design the tomb has remained unknown. Zygmunt Waźbiński, in 1979, proposed to attribute the project to Tomasz Treter, a canon from the Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere in Rome; this attribution, however, can no longer be upheld. This essay reviews the history of Bona’s monument and reassesses the question of its authorship. New evidence sheds light on the tomb’s models and reconnects its design to late-sixteenth-century tomb sculpture in Naples.

This paper analyses the myths which appeared around some local archaeological and architectonic sites after the Crimea’s incorporation into Russia in 1783. The author refers to legends of the flood developing around the mediaeval “cave towns”, the remnants of the temple of Tauric Diana, the imprints of St Andrew’s feet, the turbe at the mediaeval town of Chufut-Kale, and Maria Potocka as a captive of the Crimean khan’s harem. The author demonstrates the multidirectional intellectual interactions of various social groups such as local populations, migrants, and learned travellers representing different cultures and countries. It has been shown that the greatest role for the mythologisation of the sites was played by Russian and foreign travelogues which interpreted particular monuments as tourist attractions and drew their readers’ attention to them. By that moment, the real history of the sites had already been forgotten. Moreover, educated travellers knew some plots of classical history which allegedly happened in the peninsula, and therefore tried to “find” their traces amidst Crimean landscapes. The travellers also perceived Crimean Tatar legends and transformed them in a new manner. The locals, in their own turn, understood the tales produced by foreign intellectuals as parts of their own local history. A particular phenomenon comprises the attempts of the Christian migrants to the Crimea to find “support” among the monuments which they interpreted as very old Christian shrines related to the events known from the books. As a result, there appeared incorrect interpretations of the sites, which, because of their romantic and fascinating nature, became imprinted in public mind. This process contributed to the turning of some cultural heritage sites into tourist attractions and therefore made an impact on the establishment of the Crimea as a tourist centre.

<p><strong>Abstract.</strong> This paper describes the relationship among an important nineteenth-century monument, the Cloister of the Prior (located in the convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie, Milan), its survey and the technical integration of different cultural information to be enjoyed in VR and AR during its visit. In this context, the surveying techniques have to face the problem related to the presence of white and smooth surfaces and the difficulty in obtaining a good result in the 3D modelling. Various tests have been performed to create a good point cloud from the photogrammetric survey of the cloister, conducted through the use of different camera lenses or post production interventions applied to the images, in order to obtain the best results. The 3D modelling is not only a base for creating virtual and augmented experiences (that, through digital contents, explain to the distracted public the history of this less known part of the monument) but also a starting point for possible further studies focused on the modifications that affected the cloister over the centuries.</p>

The use of tracings-drawings engraved on floors or walls showing an architectural detail to scale-was an important stage of the Gothic building process. Although examples of such engravings have survived all over Europe, very few Italian tracings are preserved. Two hitherto unknown examples, found in the Roman church of Santa Maria in Aracoeli, are presented here for the first time. One portrays the profile of a small base and was probably a trial drawing. The other is a two-light-and-oculus tracery pattern, and is particularly interesting because it is drawn to full scale and was cut into a reused slab of ancient marble. In this essay, I reconstruct the geometric process of generating the design and analyze the position of the tracing, with its peculiar Roman features, within the European Gothic context. I also consider the engraved drawing's possible function (guideline for template- and stone-cutters, or slab from which the tracery was to be cut directly), destination (sepulchral monument, window, or ciborium), and dating.

<p>By the judgement of 8 May 2018 (II OSK 1926/17), the Supreme Administrative Court dismissed the cassation appeal of the Lublin Provincial Heritage Conservation Officer against the judgement of the Voivodeship Administrative Court in Lublin of 6 April 2017 (II SA/Lu 1119/16), in which the Court found ineffective inclusion of a real estate monument record card (the area of the former Jewish cemetery in Biłgoraj at Maria Konopnicka Street) in the provincial record of historical monuments. The Supreme Administrative Court stressed that although the judgement under appeal was incorrectly reasoned, it was in accordance with the law since there were grounds for declaring the contested act ineffective. The aforementioned judgement deserves attention due to the fact that it expresses the position that it is impossible to apply the general principles of the Code of Administrative Procedure in the proceedings conducted by the provincial heritage conservation officer concerning the inclusion of the record card of a historical monument in the provincial record of monuments. The purpose of the gloss is to refer to this view.</p>

O artigo visa reconstituir as experiências formativas, autoformativas e formadoras da vida activa escolar, e em profissão, da aluna, professora e pesquisadora Maria Salonilde Ferreira no intervalo do tempo correspondente à sua primeira escolarização (1951) e no seu estágio conclusivo do magistério superior (2014). A abordagem teórica utilizada para análise do corpus documental da pesquisa ancora-se nas aprendizagens experienciais de Marie-Christine Josso (2010), essencialmente por ser este arcabouço que possibilita a apreensão dos processos de aquisição dos saberes culturais e das aprendizagens, implicados nos componentes da formação e da autoformação, bem como nos componentes formadores. As principais conclusões resultantes da pesquisa revelam a interseção de fatores complexos à semelhança do acesso às oportunidades socioeducacionais e análogos às experiencias intervenientes na vida escolar, e em profissão, dessa educadora e pesquisadora da área de educação. Christian church buildings constitute most of the architectural heritage in Italy. In this paper, the case study of the exterior lighting renewal of the Church of “Santa Maria di Piedigrotta”, located in Napoli, is discussed. The lighting project was carried out with the goal of emphasizing the original hierarchies of the building details, that can often be difficult to understand with the current lighting system. The study started with the analysis of the architectural features of the façades and belfry as well as the existing lighting system. In order to allow for the comparison and optimization of the various lighting design solutions, a virtual model of the church was realized in the simulation software DIALuxEvo. In the most suitable concept, both diffused and accent lighting were integrated, allowing for a correct perception of the whole of the façades of Church, thus highlighting its most valuable elements. The results obtained have responded positively to the enhancement and conservation of the historical-artistic works, while also resulting in energy saving. Moreover, the Standards of Law restrictions on “light pollution towards the sky” for historical and monumental buildings have been respected.

The Rome artistic profile formation at the end of the 13th century took place in the conditions of organic coexistence and intensive interpenetration of elements of ancient, early Christian, Romanesque, Gothic and Byzantine art. The powerful impetus for the figurative and conceptual city renewal was the lead of prominent Roman pontiffs, as well as bishops and cardinals who wished to write their name in history. The discussion about the role of the patron, which began in the circle of Aby Warburg at the beginning of the 20th century, half a century later led to the emergence of one of the most actual approaches to the study of the Proto-Renaissance art. Another important direction of scientific research of these monuments was the reflections about much broader culture processes, figuratively brought into opposition “East – West”. Within this approach, various elements of iconography, which originated in the “Eastern” or “Western” paradigm, are studied, and the factors that influenced master’s choice when referring to one or another artistic tradition are evaluated. The article examines the iconography of the mosaics of the Mariological cycle by Pietro Cavallini in Santa Maria in Trastevere in the focus of the mentioned aspects of the study

In this paper, proposes a reflection about the research (auto)biographical fundamentals and its possible contributions to human formation. As a starting point, is claimed the revision of the dominant paradigm in the name for another understanding about the subject of education. The discussion is directed to the recognition of the complexity, before denied, as an intrinsic element to human life. Then, the (auto)biographical investigation cannot dispense the notion of subject immersed in the complexity that accompanies the temporality and historicity of the human race. In methodological terms, it is a theoretical essay that seeks to reinvigorate the perennial conceptual discussions from the field of educational foundations, offering movements and reflections on the (auto)biographical research immersed in epistemological questions of the field in thesis. With this, it extends the understanding horizon of the existentiality of the subject, a multiple lateralities creature: physical, sensitive, emotions, actions, affectivities, conscious attention, cognition and imagination. And it presents, finally, the (auto)biographical Method as synthesis of a concept of Formation.ResumoNeste artigo, propõe-se a reflexão sobre os fundamentos da pesquisa (auto)biográfica e as suas possíveis contribuições à formação humana. Como ponto de partida, reivindica-se a revisão do paradigma dominante em nome de outra compreensão de sujeito da educação. A discussão encaminha-se ao reconhecimento da complexidade, anteriormente negada, como elemento intrínseco à vida humana. Logo, a pesquisa (auto)biográfica não pode prescindir da noção de sujeito imerso na complexidade que acompanha a temporalidade e a historicidade do gênero humano. Em termos metodológicos, trata-se de um ensaio teórico que busca revigorar as perenes discussões conceituais, desde o campo dos fundamentos da educação, oferecendo movimentos e reflexões sobre a pesquisa (auto)biográfica imersa em questões epistemológicas do campo em tese. Este artigo explora a ação educativa realizada na Escola Estadual de Ensino Fundamental Santa Luzia, Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, desenvolvida na disciplina de Estágio de Docência em História – Educação Patrimonial, do Curso de História da UFRGS em 2018. A ação teve como objetivo observar e discutir as mudanças e permanências no espaço-tempo da Vila Maria da Conceição e as noções de documento/monumento e de fontes para a História, que possibilitam construir narrativas sobre o passado. O referencial da proposta provém dos(as) autores(as) da escola de pensamento latino-americana dos “estudos decoloniais”. Abstract. Astronomer and calendar maker Gottfried Kirch was a keen weather observer and made weather notes in his diary starting in 1677 in Leipzig. In parallel, his second wife Maria Margaretha Winkelmann started a weather diary in 1700 in Berlin. The diaries also contain instrumental measurements of temperature and later pressure. After the death of Gottfried in 1710 and Maria Margaretha in 1720, observations were continued by their son Christfried and then for another 44 years by their daughter Christine. The last measurements date to 1774. Together, the diaries span almost a century of weather observations. The instrumental measurements constitute the oldest part of Germany's longest temperature series, which was however only available as monthly means up to now. Here we publish the imaged diaries, together amounting to 10 445 images. Further, we present the digitized instrumental series, which will serve as the starting point for a new, daily Berlin series. By comparing the series to neighbouring records, we show that the pressure data are reliable in a quantitative sense, whereas this is true for the temperature data only in a qualitative sense as the temperature scale was not converted.

AbstractTheLife of Maria de’ Medici,the biographical series of twenty-four large-size paintings executed for the Queen Mother of France by Peter Paul Rubens in 1622–25, is traditionally regarded by historians as both a masterpiece of Baroque art and a monument of political naïveté. According to this view, the series was a disrespectful visual bravado that exposed both patron and painter to scandal by publicly advertising the queen’s political ideas and ambitions, which were not only audacious, but often in opposition to those of her son King Louis XIII. This article challenges this assessment by reading theLifewithin the context of seventeenth-century uses of dissimulation and spatial control as strategies to limit both intellectual and physical access to information. It argues that the series was imbued with multiple layers of meaning, intended for different audiences, and that access to these was strictly controlled by the queen and her circle.

Neste artigo, apresentamos um dispositivo de pesquisa-formação com indícios de automedialidade e com narrativas partilhadas, seus pressupostos teórico-metodológicos e alguns efeitos de ressonância para a formação de si de jovens estudantes da universidade. Tal dispositivo foi realizado com um grupo de jovens estudantes de Pedagogia, em uma universidade pública federal, no âmbito de uma pesquisa maior, que trata dos desafios enfrentados pelos(as) jovens para se construírem como estudantes na vida universitária. Desse modo, o procedimento fundamenta-se nos referenciais teóricos e metodológicos da automedialidade, conforme Christine Delory-Momberger e Jean-Claude Bourguignon, e da pesquisa (auto)biográfica, de acordo com Christine Delory-Momberger, Maria Conceição Passeggi e Elizeu Clementino de Souza. Como resultado, pode-se identificar que a participação dos(as) jovens no dispositivo permite práticas de si com efeitos de ressonância, tendo em vista a formação de si. Conclui-se que a partir dos gestos automediais, pela produção de blogs e/ou vídeos, articulados aos processos de reflexividade sobre tais gestos, com as narrativas de si individuais e partilhadas, contribui-se para a compreensão dos desafios enfrentados por esses(as) jovens para se construírem como estudantes, para o fortalecimento dos sentimentos de pertencimento e de autoria em relação às diferentes dimensões da vida universitária.

By examining the historical narratives of Saint Catherine of Siena's death and burial this paper sheds new light on the liturgical layout of the Dominican church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva in Rome c. 1380. Since then Saint Catherine's remains have been translated five times, and at each translation, the form and decoration of her sepulchre has changed, showing how different aspects of her life were commemorated at each renewal of her tomb. These transformations are examined in the light of what survives today and of other literary documentation. Particular attention is given to the way Catherine was represented before and after her canonization in 1461. This explains why a relief attributed to Donatello that has been associated with her tomb may date c. 1430, while a figure of the saint by an artist close to Isaia of Pisa was made c. 1466. The paper also examines the consequences of placing the tomb under the altar of the Capranica chapel in 1579, and of moving the monument under the high altar of the church in 1855, when Santa Maria sopra Minerva was restored according to neo-Gothic principles. Each phase of her tomb shows how Catherine has been venerated from 1380 until the present.

Este trabalho é o relato de experiência de uma professora de Educação Infantil, da Rede Municipal de Santa Maria, RS, a qual procura estabelecer e manter vínculos afetivos com crianças pequenas e suas famílias por meio de contato virtual com contações de histórias. Como aporte teórico, usa-se Wallon (2005), Vygotsky (1984), Pichon-Rivière (1998), Paulo Freire (1997, 2011) e Marie-Christine Josso (2010). Durante essa vivência, em meio à pandemia de COVID-19, pelo contato através das redes sociais, principalmente via whatsapp, é possível perceber que esse tipo de proposta pedagógica proporciona a auto(trans)formação da professora e momentos lúdicos às crianças e aos seus familiares. As contações de histórias mantêm e estreitam vínculos afetivos estabelecidos, bem como possibilitam que relações de confiança e de ajuda mútua sejam consolidadas.

Emilio de Fabris's completion of the west front of Santa Maria del Fiore is the best-known of the architectural interventions carried out during the nineteenth century in the Piazza del Duomo and Piazza di San Giovanni in Florence. But this initiative was preceded by an earlier one that was more radical in character, insofar as it transformed the area around the Campanile and Duomo. A proposal of November 1823 by the architect Gaetano Baccani resulted in the demolition of a large part of the late medieval cathedral canonry and the creation of an extensive new piazza on the south side of Santa Maria del Fiore. This intervention introduced two issues that were to become fundamental to the notion of urban patrimony. On the one hand, it prompted consideration of the relationship between a historic monument and its ambience; on the other, it brought into focus the tension that was likely to exist between conservation and the creation of a modern urban environment. The present study publishes Baccani's formal submission to the Deputazione Secolare sopra l'Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore and draws on other documents preserved in the Archivio dell'Opera to construct a detailed history of the project. The study also introduces other literary and visual materials to establish the nature of Baccani's "systematization" of the Piazza del Duomo. Baccani's project is linked retrospectively to a Napoleonic plan for the modernization of Florence, but it is discussed also as a harbinger of later programs of urban renewal in Florence and in other Italian cities. The paper outlines the history of the canonry compound and places Baccani's reorganization of it in the context of the development of a new relationship between church and state in Florence. The piazza likewise is considered in relation to the transformation of Florence into a modern, orderly city, well-suited to the growing tourist industry. From Baccani's proposal to the Deputazione Secolare it is apparent that he wished it to be believed that his project was in keeping with the intentions of the original architects of the Duomo. The present study considers Baccani's project in this light, while also assessing the extent to which his plans were rooted in his own time. In particular, Baccani's conception of the area around the Duomo is discussed in relation to other urbanistic projects that were planned in Florence, Milan, and Rome during the Napoleonic period. Finally, Baccani's scheme is considered in relation to recent studies of the area around the Duomo by Piero Sanpaolesi, Margaret Haines, and Marvin Trachtenberg. The paper establishes that Baccani's intervention fundamentally changed the manner in which Santa Maria del Fiore and the Campanile could be seen, revealing an "ideal" view of the two buildings in juxtaposition. Baccani's vision is discussed in relation to a widespread nineteenth-century wish to consecrate the individual monument. The study concludes by introducing a number of unfamiliar images of the Campanile and Duomo and proposes that they lent authority to Baccani's concept of a "best" general view of these monuments.

The first three papers featured in Issue 4/2021 of Balgarski ezik present results of the work on a project titled Everyday Life in the Middle Ages according to Lexical Data from Bulgarian and Romanian – a bilateral effort between the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and the Romanian Academy. Mariyana Tsibranska-Kostova’s paper Magic and its Faces (the 61st Canon of Trullo in Slavic Translations) proposes an analysis of several representatives of the lexical-semantic group of performers of magical practices according to three translations of the canon. The author discusses the word-formation structure of the lexical group as well as the semantic adaptation of Greek names for unknown realia. The text of the 61st Canon of Trullo is published as an appendix. Elka Mircheva provides a discussion on the topic of Bad Thoughts are Worse than Illness (to the Analysis of Medieval Texts) by analysing examples of illness in Pope Gregory the Great’s Dialogues which have been interpreted by earlier studies as cases of psychological conditions. The author’s analysis points to the fact that some of these occurrences are evidence of the influence of bad thoughts resulting in unacceptable reprehen-sible behaviour. Vanya Micheva’s paper Names for Living Places in the Bulgarian Language Picture of the World in the Middle Ages deals with the linguistic and semantic realisations of the concept of living places in the Old Bulgarian classical and original works from the 9th – 11th centuries and in the works of Patriarch Euthymius. The author traces the process of enrichment of the names for living places and the changes in the conceptual content of the studied lexemes. Tatyana Braga’s paper A Little-known Damaskin from the Karlovo-Adzhar School of Calligraphy and Art: Odessa Damascus № 36 (62) – Palaeography, Codicology, Dating offers a meticulous palaeographic and codicological description of a Bulgarian written monument, the Odessa Damaskin № 36 (62) from the manuscript collection of V.I. Grigorovich. Nadka Nikolova’s paper Общ язик с виражение народно. The Language Norms in the Translation of A. Granitski’s За Тръговско писмописанїе (On Commercial Letter Writing), 1858 presents the results of a study on Anastas Granitski’s contribution to the establishment of the structural basis and spelling and language norms of the Bulgarian literary language of the Revival period. On the basis of her observations on adjectives, numerals, pronouns and verbs, the author comes to the conclusion that the text reveals significant convergence of written and spoken language. Maria Mitskova addresses some Issues in the Verb Morphology of Bulgarian Dialects in the Studies of Three European Slavicists from the First Half of the 19th Century – Vuk Karadžić, Victor Grigorovich, Stefan Verković. The paper emphasises the contribution of the first Slavicists whose work marks the origination of the scientific interest in one of the most characteristic features of Bulgarian verbs. Elena Kanevska-Nikolova and Simeon Marinov present a study on the Names for Women’s Outerwear in the Rhodope Folk Clothing based on ma-terial excerpted from various ethnographic, regional historical and dialectological studies. The authors examine ambiguous and synonymous terms, main word-formation patterns, as well as the etymology of some of the names under study. They go on to analyse the terminological unity of many names for women’s outerwear characteristic of both confessional groups to which the Bulgarian population in the Rhodopes belong. Georgi Mitrinov’s paper Is there a Pomak Dialect in Bulgaria? is a critical look at a study by Emel Balakchi dealing with the Bulgarian Rhodope dialects. The author addresses Balakchi’s attempt at presenting the Rhodope dialects as Pomak dialects, while ignoring the presence of a native Bulgarian Christian population in the Rhodopes. Using numerous examples, Georgi Mitrinov reveals the study’s lack of scientific competence and objectivity in presenting the characteristic features of the Bulgarian Rhodope dialects. The issue concludes with a paper that remains outside its thematic scope. Stative Predicates in Contemporary Linguistic Theories by Svetlozara Leseva, Hristina Kukova and Ivelina Stoyanova offers a critical overview of the thematic classes of stative verbs based on a contrastive study of several thematic classifications. The authors analyse the different views of the properties of stative predicates from an aspectual and semantic perspective.

Abstract The Roman road Maria Theresia is known for its historical heritage; in the past, the troops of the Austro-Hungarian Empire housed weapons and food here. Built hundreds of years ago, the route crosses the Călimani mountains. In the elaboration of this article I applied as a research method the case study, which allowed me access to some historical and military information, namely the fact that the historical road had been designed since the time of Emperor Joseph II, but it was completed only in 1820, during the reign of Emperor Francis I of Austria. This study allowed me to collect certain data related to the way in which this road is valued and is attributed remarkable tourist values, and all this through the project undertaken by the Tășuleasa Social Association, which aims to arrange this route as thematic path, precisely to rediscover the imperial road with the value of a historical monument, but also to highlight the natural setting of the Călimani Mountains. Throughout the investigations and the documents studied, I found that many volunteers joined this great project, to keep a road with a distant history practicable. From this case study, it appears that this road has been so well valued that it manages to attract more and more tourists, eager to know both the history of these places, but also to participate in the organized marathon or for a simple hike.

Abstract. This paper describes a geophysical investigation conducted into two important churches, namely the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and the Church of Santa Croce, both in Gravina in Puglia (close to Bari, southern Italy). The Church of Santa Croce, now deconsecrated, lies below the cathedral. Therefore, the two churches constitute a unique building body. Moreover, below the Church of Santa Croce there are several crypts, which are only partially known. The prospecting was performed both with a pulsed commercial ground penetrating radar (GPR) system and with a prototypal reconfigurable stepped frequency system. The aim was twofold, namely to gather information about the monument and to test the prototypal system. The GPR measurements have also been integrated with an infrared thermography (IRT) investigation performed on part of the vaulted ceiling in the Church of Santa Croce, in order to confirm or deny a possible interpretation of certain GPR results.

Abstract Considered a musical monument to the Austro- Hungarian Empire – The Gypsy Baron (originally Der Zigeunerbaron) of 1885 composed by Johann Strauss II (1825-1899) reveals how important position Maria Theresia had in the Empire in the long nineteenth century. It is also a great example of keeping, in Vienna at the end of the nineteenth century, hold of the memory of her politics. The Gypsy Baron is clearly the work inscribed into political situation as it constituted a specific response to a concrete need to stimulate civil attitudes (so desired within the Empire at that time). Treating the Gypsy Baron as a case study, the paper suggests that although the world of operetta might be overlooked or underestimated when discussing the role of political propaganda and the issues of collective memory. It should be recognized as one of the key sites employed to promote the Habsburgs’ vision of their Empire.

A pesquisa narrativa abre a possibilidade do diálogo estreito com a experiência viva, com a formação e o desenvolvimento pessoal, conforme se observa neste texto sobre a escuta sensível que se manifesta nas histórias contadas por três estudantes.

The debate on the relationships between Rome, Italy, and the Mediterranean world in the Archaic and mid-Republican periods remains very lively. Complementing the most recent discoveries and interpretations, I present two unknown mid-Republican documents from the Arx, the N summit of the Capitoline hill (fig. 1). Excavations for the Monument to Victor Emmanuel II brought to light after 1887 many walls and artifacts, which have been studied almost exclusively to produce archaeological maps or catalogues of objects, but the structures sealed beneath the basilica of Santa Maria in Aracoeli toward the end of the 13th c., rediscovered in the 1980s and surveyed by the present author since 2001, shed new light on a number of religious, historical, topographical, architectural and art-historical issues.The new archaeological evidence may be summarized as follows. In the 1st c. B.C., an aristocratic domus set on three levels occupied the NW sector of the Arx; it was remodeled in the Flavian and Severan periods (figs. 2-3). Apparently a location of the temple of Juno Moneta on the site of the Aracoeli must be ruled out. Among the structures still preserved beneath the basilica, which include an Imperial-era wall with huge curvilinear spurs that can be associated with the Iseum Capitolinum, we may mention an ashlar wall in blocks of Grotta Oscura tuff (a stone available after the defeat of Veii in 397 B.C.) that constituted the façade of a monument with a false arch dating from the 4th c. B.C. (fig. 2).

The Main purpose of the study is an analysis of influence of the image of St. Peter's Basilica on the Roman church architecture of the 12th-13th centuries. It is possible to search the special type of the presbytery, characterized by uniting of the altar on the pedestal and the reliquary “confession” in the general vertical composition. The congregation of these churches had opportunities to see the process of worship and approach the saint relicts. The altar stood so that the Priest served the mass facing the worshippers, as it was in San Pietro. So, this important monument of Rome could be a model for the other churches of the Middle Ages. Among the churches of this period, such features have the altar space of San Giovanni in Laterano, as well as the basilicas of San Giorgio in Velabro, Santa Maria Assunta in Anagni and Santi Giovanni e Paolo in Ferentino. All these buildings was connected with the Power of Papa.

Allegorical representations and personifications of Venice, designed to perpetuate and update the myth of Venice, occupy a prominent place in seventeenth-century publishing. Editorial vignettes, frontispieces and engravings promote an image of the Republic anchored in the tradition and myth of the foundation of the city, but attentive to the evolution of the historical situation. As in the past, this image is polysemic and combines mainly the figures of Justice and the Virgin. A new dimension opens up in the context of the wars against the Ottoman Empire that occupy the second half of the century. A particularly significant example to document this historical evolution is the church of Santa Maria della Salute which, born as a votive Marian temple during the plague of 1630, is transformed into a monument dedicated to the war. On the lantern of the church’s dome, the figure of the Virgin takes on the appearance of a supreme commander of the navy.

O objetivo deste estudo é o de apresentar como a pesquisa narrativa pode promover o autoconhecimento e a reflexão em estudantes universitários, favorecer a construção de um ambiente em que as relações docente-discente se estreitem e capturar os sentidos elaborados por eles ao narrarem a sua vida estudantil. Este estudo está ancorado no paradigma da complexidade, de Edgar Morin, nos estudos antropológicos do imaginário, de Gilbert Durand, Hilmann, nas pesquisas de Christine Delory-Momberger, Bruner, Maria da Conceição Passeggi, Chaves, entre outros. Acreditamos que a pesquisa narrativa pode promover o acolhimento e (des)vendar o universo simbólico do alunato, auxiliando no saber sobre si e no estabelecimento de relações interpessoais mais benéficas. A pesquisa narrativa abre possibilidades de um diálogo estreito com a experiência viva, com a formação e com desenvolvimento pessoal. É dessa experiência viva que advém a compreensão, oriunda de uma escuta sensível que se manifesta nas histórias contadas por três estudantes neste texto.

Este artigo tem como foco o relato de experiência de uma DCG (Disciplina Complementar de Graduação) oferecida no Curso de Pedagogia Diurno, sendo aberta a toda comunidade estudantil da Universidade Federal de Santa Maria/RS. A temática de Gênero ainda não faz parte do currículo da Pedagogia e de poucas licenciaturas. No entanto, o tema está presente no dia a dia da Universidade e no cotidiano das Escolas da Educação Básica. Por conta disso, oferecer uma disciplina que possibilite a reflexão deste tema em diálogo com a educação tem se mostrado um espaço rico de estudos, de conhecimentos e de novas práticas. A intenção, aqui, é partilhar esta experiência prática no contexto de graduação a partir da narrativa desta atividade educativa em diálogo com a teoria feminista. Também dialogamos com Marie-Christine Josso e Jorge Larrossa em relação ao conceito de experiência. A DCG é ofertada todos os semestres, portanto é uma experiência em andamento, mas que já tem uma história para contar.
