Abstract Pliocene–Quaternary faults are relevant structures with which to constrain the seismotectonic context and contribute to the evaluation of the seismic hazard of a region. Many of these faults, however, do not show clear surface evidence even when releasing earthquakes. For these reasons they can be extremely dangerous as they receive relatively little attention and can be difficult to identify. From among the various surface geology studies and/or palaeoseismological investigations, we focus our attention on the integration of different datasets such as seismic reflection profiles, surface kinematic data and the relocation of seismological data, which make it possible to identify and characterize active faults whose dimension and earthquake potential would otherwise not be large enough to make them identifiable. We take as an example the Montespertoli NE-trending fault in southern Tuscany (central Italy) with which we associate the 2016 M=3.9 Castelfiorentino earthquake. This structure is part of a wider (in the order of 15–20 km) crustal-scale shear zone, which may be responsible for strong historical earthquakes in the area.

Le analisi contenute nel presente elaborato di tesi costituiscono uno strumento conoscitivo di base, indispensabile per tutte quelle zone in cui i movimenti franosi o altre dinamiche inducono pericolosità geologica interferendo con l’ambiente e le strutture antropiche, consentendo una buona conoscenza, anche di territori con estensione piuttosto ampia, a costi molto ridotti.Tutte le procedure e software utilizzati nel presente lavoro sono disponibili open-source e fruibili gratuitamente online. Il rilevamento geomorfologico è stato condotto in tre aree di studio, caratterizzate da contesti geologico-strutturali diversi tra loro. Tale rilevamento, coadiuvato da un'analisi multitemporale condotta mediante fotointerpretazione, si è rivelato molto utile per individuare i limiti dei movimenti franosi, il loro grado di attività e la loro evoluzione nel tempo. Le analisi statistiche hanno consentito di individuare la variabilità dei parametri predisponenti nelle diverse aree di studio e di indicare quali classi, tra i parametri, sono caratterizzate dal maggior numero di frane e, dunque, più prone al franamento. Gli studi di suscettibilità effettuati per le diverse aree di studio con la metodologia di statistica bivariata mostrano un’elevata percentuale di aree in frana ricadenti all’interno delle aree predette a più elevata suscettibilità e possono essere applicati sia a piccola sia a grande scala, per diverse tipologie di frane. Infine, i risultati ottenuti tramite il modello prevalentemente deterministico basato sul modulo r.slope.stability (http://www.slopestability.org/) sono piuttosto attendibili e rappresentativi della situazione reale, come dimostrato dai risultati della validazione tramite la stima di AROC. L’opportunità di utilizzare software GIS, non solo per la manipolazione dei dati ma anche per il loro aggiornamento e per l’esecuzione automatica delle procedure bivariate (ad es. attraverso il codice in linguaggio Python creato durante questo lavoro di tesi), incrementa notevolmente la possibilità di estendere queste analisi a nuove e diverse aree di studio, con costi pressoché nulli.

AbstractIn the 2016 Volume 2 of the Satoyama Initiative Thematic Review (SITR), a summary of the activities of the Grani Antichi Association in Montespertoli, Tuscany, was introduced with a roll out plan for transformative change of the supply chain and possible replication of the project in other regions. The main goal of the project has been to restore and preserve ancient varieties of wheat, cultivate them sustainably and include a form of payment for the least compensated members of the production chain. The aims of the Association are to reduce the carbon footprint of modern agricultural practices and the landslides and soil erosion caused by them, to preserve biodiversity and most importantly, to improve farmers’ revenue, enabling them to safeguard the environment and improve health by cultivating healthy food. The preservation of social ties and local knowledge is an additional result. Markers of the project’s success include benefits that are equally distributed across the production chain, farmers who are motivated to cultivate ancient wheat varieties and the conversion of 500 ha of abandoned or conventionally cultivated land to a more sustainable and biodiverse system. The market economy system in place was dismantled, and farmers now have access to more economic benefits, which must be distributed fairly. Because the project provides a transformative model of production and consumption outside the traditional market economy system, it appears to function with a complete multi-sectoral chain, where producers, food processors and consumers agree on a set price for a defined product. This chapter provides a preliminary analysis of the successes and challenges related to the main project and to upscaling in different areas.
