Six developmental stages (leafing, budding, flowering, fruiting, senescence and dormancy) were chosen in the threatened terrestrial orchid Caladenia formosa G.W.Carr to optimise isolation of effective fungi. Loose (undigested) pelotons were observed by scanning electron microscopy in the old tuber and collar, suggesting a role in infection of new tissue. In collars collected at early life stages (leafing, budding, flowering), pelotons had loosely coiled hyphae that were uniformly fine (1–2 μm diameter), with or without monilioid cells. In collars collected from older life stages (fruiting, senescence), pelotons had increasing proportions (up to 94%) of clumped fine hyphae. Coarser hyphae (4–6 μm diameter) were also present in the fruiting stage in one year. Only fungi isolated from single pelotons in collars of early life stages (leafing, budding, flowering) had fine hyphae with monilioid cells and induced seed germination (to green leaf production). Sectioned protocorms had pelotons of fine, loosely coiled hyphae with monilioid cells, as in field-collected material from early life stages. This suggests that the most effective fungi for conservation of this orchid are likely to be isolated from pelotons of loose fine hyphae with monilioid cells from leafing to flowering stages.

The article provides information on the prevalence of cherry moniliosis in the Tashkent region, the growth and development of cherries affected by the disease are significantly lower than healthy ones, which leads to a sharp decrease in productivity. Also, that during the processing of cherries against moniliosis during the growing season, the fungicide Triada k. k. r. (Propicanosol 140 g/l + Tebuconazole 140 g/l + Epoxyconazole 72 g/l) in the amount of 0.4-0.5 l/ha, the biological efficiency ranged from 82.5% to 90.3%.

Blossom and twig blight, caused by Monilinia spp., is the main disease in apricot trees. In this study, we installed transparent rain shelters in apricot orchards to study their influence on the modification of the microclimate at the level of the tree canopy and on the reduction in moniliosis damage in twigs. Rain shelters significantly reduced the leaf wetness time measured within the foliage compared to the unsheltered trees (a reduction of between 43% and 67%). However, very few differences were observed in the daily averaged air temperature (up to 6%) and daily averaged air relative humidity (up to 1%). In the first experiment, on the apricot variety Bergarouge® (CEP Innovation, Lyon, France), moniliosis damage on twigs in the absence of phytosanitary protection was reduced by up to 62% for the trees provided with rain protection compared to the trees that did not receive rain shelters. A second experiment, involving five apricot tree varieties, made it possible to verify that fungicide protection could be reduced for the trees protected by rain covers, reducing moniliosis damage on twigs compared to full fungicide protection combined without rain protection. Finally, a third experiment comprising two apricot tree varieties has shown that in organic orchards, rain protection provides protection against moniliosis (twig blight) that is equivalent to an organic farming fungicide protection programme based on the use of copper sulphate and calcium polysulphide.

Short, standardized gene fragments for species identification (DNA barcodes) have proven effective in delineating closely-related insect species, and can be critical characters to include in taxonomic studies. This is also the case for the species-rich and widely distributed fly family Chironomidae (non-biting midges). Inspired by observed genetic differences in partial COI gene sequences between North American and European populations of the chironomid Ablabesmyia monilis sensu lato, we investigated whether or not the morphology of male and female adults supported the distinction of more than one species. Our results support that the junior synonym Ablabesmyia americana is a valid species separate from A. monilis, and that A. monilis sensu stricto is distributed both in the Palearctic region and in North America. We provide re-descriptions of all of the major life stages of A. americana and of the adult female of A. monilis.

The aim of the study was to describe the fungi of the genus Monilinia and their damages on apple trees. During 2008-2012, surveys of apple orchards in various regions of Belarus were carried out to collect infected material for isolation of pathogens in pure culture. Fungi identification has been made by features of the cultures and morphology. It was found that in Belarus, moniliosis of apple mainly is caused by Monilinia fructigena. For the first time, in Belarus the fungus Monilinia laxa on apple-tree was recorded. In orchards of Belarus, the most widespread form of apple moniliosis was brown rot. Under favourable conditions for pathogen development, harvest losses of apple due to brown rot can exceed 50%. In recent years, an increase in damage caused by the spring form of moniliosis (monilial blight) has occurred in apple orchards. Monilial blight of twigs and fruit-bearing branches was caused by M. fructigena and M. laxa fungi. The increasing trend of this form of disease was shown in orchards older than ten years.

Inland eastern Australia has a complex array of habitats, driven by variation in topography, geology and moisture. This broad region is relatively poorly surveyed compared to coastal eastern Australia and likely contains significant numbers of undescribed reptiles. Oedura monilis is found through much of this region but has been shrouded in taxonomic uncertainty since its original description. Here I assess variation across the range of ‘O. monilis’ and show that it consists of two species: a widespread species in the northern half of the range and a widespread species in the southern half of the range. These two species are readily diagnosed by colour pattern and aspects of shape and scalation. I show that the name O. monilis applies to the northern species. I also show that the name O. attenboroughi Wells & Wellington applies to the northern populations, making it a junior synonym of O. monilis. I describe the southern widespread species as Oedura elegans sp. nov.. I also describe two new, highly localised species from inland eastern Queensland that are allied to O. monilis: Oedura picta sp. nov. from a rocky range in the Moranbah–Dysart region, and Oedura lineata sp. nov. from brigalow forest remnants in the Arcadia Valley. These two species are distinct for colour pattern and aspects of size, shape and scalation. Oedura lineata sp. nov. has a very small and fragmented range, and is restricted to a highly threatened habitat type. It therefore warrants conservation attention. I also provide more detailed diagnoses for O. coggeri Bustard and O. tryoni De Vis, and demonstrate that the name O. ocellata Boulenger is a junior synonym of O. tryoni.

The seasonal development and mycorrhizal fungi of the mycorrhizae of Platanthera hyperborea, Platanthera obtusata, Platanthera orbiculata, and Coeloglossum viride are described. Fungal endophytes belonging to the following taxa were identified: Leptodontidium orchidicola, Epulorhiza repens, Epulorhiza anaticula comb, nov., and Ceratorhiza goodyerae-repentis. In addition, anamorphic material of a species tentatively identified as Sebacina sp. was found solely in the mycorrhizae of P. orbiculata. A series of isolates bearing distinctive, clamped monilioid cells and belonging to an unidentified species of Sistotrema was found in P. obtusata. This is the first report of a Sistotrema species from orchid mycorrhizae. An isolate from C. viride, with broad hyphae, large globose monilioid cells, and dark brown mycelium, resembles Burgeff's 1936 description of Rhizoctonia anomala nom.inval. This taxon is validated, redescribed, and presented as the new species Moniliopsis anomala.

The purpose of the research is the biological and economic evaluation of a new variety of sour cherry Shelangovskaya in the conditions of the Republic of Tatarstan. Winter hardiness, productivity, the susceptibility of sour cherry varieties to coccomycosis, moniliosis, damage by aphids, and economic efficiency were evaluated according to the methodology of the All-Russian Research Institute of Fruit Crop Breeding. A comparative assessment of the biological and economic characteristics of the sour cherry varieties Krasa Tataria and Shelangovskaya showed that the new sour cherry variety surpasses the standard variety in productivity (8 kg), yield (5 t/ha), resistance to coccomycosis (1.9 points), moniliosis (1.5 points), flowering strength (4.6 points), self-fertility (24 %), fruit taste (4.2 points), profit from 1 ha of the garden (26.0 thousand rubles) and the level of profitability (13.1 %).

Two new species of fungi mycorrhizal with terrestrial orchids native to the Canadian prairies are described and illustrated. Ceratorhiza pernacatena sp.nov., from mycorrhizas of Platanthera praeclara, produces globose monilioid cells linked by narrow, tubular, connections that contain the septum between adjacent cells. Hyphae are binucleate, 5–7 μm in width, regularly septate with perforate parenthesomes. Cellulase is produced, but polyphenol oxidase production is low to absent. Epulorhiza calendulina sp.nov., from mycorrhizas of Amerorchis rotundifolia, is distinguished from other Epulorhiza species by the orange to ochre colour of colonies on potato dextrose agar. On corn meal agar, clavate to irregular monilioid cells are produced in short, branched, chains arising from lateral hyphal branches. Runner hyphae are binucleate, 3.0–4.7 μm in width, regularly septate, with flattened, imperforate parenthesomes. Polyphenol oxidase production is lacking, but cellulase is produced. A new Rhizoctonia-like fungus associated with ectomycorrhizal tips of evergreen oak inoculated with Tuber melanosporum is described. Tulasnella tubericola sp. nov. is characterized by its particular habitat, apparently not associated with the roots of any orchid species, its fast-growing rate in plate culture, the creamy-white to pale orange tones of the colonies, the production of both typical globose monilioid cells together with terminal, finger-like monilioid projections and the absence of true sclerotia. In addition, phylogenetic analyses based on the sequences of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of the ribosomal DNA (rDNA) showed that the different isolates that define the new species constitute an isolated, monophyletic lineage within the genus. The fungus is exclusively isolated from mycorrhizal roots of Quercus ilex subsp. ballota, being absent both in the culture substrate or in the natural soil employed in the mycorrhization processes. No sexual fruiting bodies have been observed or induced in the laboratory for this fungus.

CLOCK merupakan protein penting yang berperan dalam adaptasi ekologi dan fisiologi organisme. Studi sebelumnya menjelaskan bahwa CLOCK memiliki pengaruh terhadap perubahan perilaku hewan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis protein CLOCK pada burung Patagioenas fasciata monilis. Metode yang digunakan pada penelitian ini adalah metode homologi. Hasil struktur model berdasarkan assessment menunjukkan akurasi model yang mendekati struktur sebenarnya. Most taxonomic groups of organisms harbor temporarily or permanently multinucleate cells in all or parts of their bodies. Each nucleus in the same cytoplasm responds almost identically to environmental cues, but little is known about the signals that mediate their coordinated division. In this study, we used Griffithsia monilis, a multinucleated giant cell, to investigate how its nuclear division occurs and the role of cytoskeleton in this process. Our results show that nuclear division is exquisitely coordinated and synchronized, but that nuclear division and chloroplast division are not coupled to each other. Microtubules are known to play an important role in synchronized nuclear division in some large multinucleate green algae, and microtubule arrangement is involved in shaping the cytoplasmic domains of each nucleus. However, we found no evidence for the involvement of the cytoskeleton in the synchronized nuclear division or regular nuclear arrangement in G. monilis. Although the nuclei were arranged at very regular intervals, these intervals became irregular during nuclear division, and there was no regular arrangement of actin or microtubules to maintain the spacing between the nuclei. Neither cortical microtubules nor spindle microtubules were physically connected to other neighboring nuclei during nuclear division, suggesting that microtubules are not involved in the coordination of nuclear division in G. monilis.

The nymphs of this species are quadrideficient and eupheredermous, i.e. they carry the exuvial scalps of previous instars on the gastronotum, using a cornicle. The nymphs have also a posterior apophysis, with setae h1 and p1.

A new species, Aureobasidium khasianum, was found growing on decaying leaves of Wightia speciosissima (Paulowniaceae) in India. It is described here with newly observed morphological features such as formation of setae having adhering conidiogenous cells and producing monilioid conidia. A phylogenetic analysis based on ITS and LSU gene regions is provided to support the taxonomic treatment.

Monilia versiformia sp. nov. is a pleoanamorphic fungus producing two types of blastoconidia, viz., monilioid chains of dark-colored, sphaeroid conidia and lunate, hyaline conidia produced singly on simple, conidiogenous hyphae. The chains are produced in great abundance, and as the conidia mature and become pigmented, the chains break down and form a sooty mass. The fungus was isolated from a perennial canker of Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco) in British Columbia, Canada.

In many filamentous red algae, cells that die from physical damage are replaced through somatic fusion of repair cells formed from adjacent cells. We visualized ROS generation in repair cells of Giriffthsia monilis using DCFH-DA staining and examined the expression of the genes involved in wound healing using quantitative PCR. Repair cells elongate along the H2O2 gradient, meet at each other’s tips where the H2O2 concentration is highest, and undergo somatic fusion. No wound response occurred with ascorbic acid treatment. Conversely, H2O2 treatment induced many repair cells, leading to multiple somatic cell fusions. Diphenylene iodonium (DPI) or caffeine treatment reversibly inhibited ROS production in repair cells and blocked the progression of the wound response suggesting that ROS and calcium signaling are involved in the process. Four G. monilis homologues of NADPH-oxidase (GmRBOHs) were identified. The expression of GmRBOHs was upregulated upon injury, peaking 1 h post injury, and decreasing to initial levels when repair cells began to elongate. Our results suggest that ROS generated upon cell injury activates Ca2+ channels and upregulates the expression of GmRBOHs, and that H2O2 generated from repair cells mediates induced repair cell elongation leading to somatic cell fusion and filament repair.

The paper presents the data on a long term dynamics of the occurrence and development of moniliosis in cherry plants. It’s established that during the research the occurrence of blossom blight of cherry sprouts was 1,6–59,7 %, and fruit rot – 0,2–27,4 %. The development of cherry blossom blight doesn’t depend on the age of the crop. The biological efficiency of the copper fungicide Indigo, CS was studied. The biological efficiency of Indigo, CS applied in a dose of 3,0–5,0 l/ha to cherry amounted to in 2020: 77,8–88,1 % for limitation of blossom blight of sprouts, and 86,0–92,0 % for limitation of fruit rot; in 2021: 77,8–83,0 % and 88,3–92,0 % respectively.

Abstract: Rhodophycean phycoerythrin (R-PE) was isolated from the red alga Griffithsia monilis and purified on Q­ Sepharose. Untwinned crystals diffracting to 2.lA on a rotating anode X-ray source were obtained by the hanging-drop vapour diffusion method, and their space group determined as R3. SDS gel-electrophoresis of dissolved crystals showed the a and p subunits of the protein (apparent molecular weight, about 19 kDa) and two different forms of they-subunit (apparent molecular weight, 28 and 30 kDa) being present in the crystals.

Intercellular nutrient and signal transduction are essential to sustaining multicellular organisms and maximizing thebenefits of multicellularity. It has long been believed that red algal intercellular transport of macromolecules is preventedby the protein-rich pit plug within pit-connections, the only physical connection between cells. Fluorescein isothiocyanate-dextran and recombinant green fluorescence protein (rGFP) of various molecular sizes were injected into vegetativecells of Griffithsia monilis using a micromanipulator, and intercellular transport of the fluorescent probes was examined.Pit-connections were found to provide intercellular transport of tracers at rates comparable to plasmodesmata in otherorganisms. The time necessary for the transport to an adjacent cell was dependent on the molecular size and the directionof the transport. Fluorescent dextran of 3 kDa was transported to adjacent cells in 1–2 h after injection and migratedto all cells of the filament within 24 h, but fluorescent dextran of 10–20 kDa took 24 h to transfer to neighboring cells. Themigration occurred faster towards adjacent reproductive cells and to apical cells than basally. Fluorescent tracers above40 kDa and rGFP was not transported to neighboring cells, but accumulated near the pit plug. Our results suggest thatpit-connections are conduit for macromolecules between neighboring cells and that these size-specific conduits allowintercellular communication between the vegetative cells of red algae.

Abstract. Two new species of dinocyst, Cerbia monilis and Hapsocysta susanae are described from the Lower Cretaceous of the Central North Sea Basin. The first ranges across the Aptian/Albian boundary and the latter is restricted to the Early to Middle Albian interval; both are valuable index taxa in this area. Hapsocysta susanae is remarkably similar to cysts ‘without walls’ described from the Late Oligocene and Early Miocene, and detailed comparisons are made. The ranges of the two species described here are illustrated against regional lithostratigraphic and biostratigraphic schemes.

CLOCK merupakan protein penting yang berperan dalam adaptasi ekologi dan fisiologi dibanyak organisme. Studi sebelumnya menjelaskan bahwa CLOCK memiliki pengaruh terhadap perubahan perilaku hewan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis protein CLOCK pada burung Patagioenas fasciata monilis secara in silico. Metode yang digunakan pada penelitian ini adalah metode homologi. Hasil struktur model berdasarkan assessment menunjukkan akurasi model yang mendekati struktur sebenarnya. Struktur model yang diperoleh memiliki berat 96200,04 Daltons, tiga daerah struktur beta-sheet, lima daerah struktur alpha-helix, 1,47 % daerah otuliers, dua residu C-Beta Deviations, nilai identity 94,43 %, 34 sudut buruk, nilai QMEAN -1,69 dan nilai GMQE 0,31.

A new species of endophytic fungus, described herein as Tulasnella phuhinrongklaensis, was isolated from a root of a terrestrial orchid, Phalaenopsis pulcherrima, in Phitsanulok Province, Thailand. This species is characterized by its cream to white colonies, branched chains of spherical to ellipsoid monilioid cells and absence of sclerotia. The uniqueness of the species was confirmed by a phylogenetic analysis of combined sequences of internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and large subunit region (LSU) of ribosomal DNA, and a nucleotide divergence of the ITS sequences. The phylogenetic result showed that T. phuhinrongklaensis formed a monophyletic lineage clearly distinct from other Tulasnella and Epulorhiza species, the asexual morph of Tulasnella. The nucleotide divergence of ITS sequences in the new fungus ranged from 50.66–57.93% in genera Tulasnella and Epulorhiza. A description and illustrations of the new species are provided.

Ear and kernel rots can reduce yield, quality and feed value of grain. Toxins produced by the fungi in corn can also have serious implications on the end use of the grain. Various fungi cause ear and kernel rots. Fungi belonging to the genus Fusarium are the most significant fungi which can cause corn ear and kernel rots. The aim of this paper is to test health of mercantile maize seed belonging to different hybrids. Seed health testing was done using filter paper and nutritive media (PDA) method. Fungi from genera Fusarium, Penicillium, Aspergillus and Alternaria were isolated from tested corn seed by both methods. Two species from the genus Fusarium were found in the tested corn samples F. graminearum and F. monilirome. Tested hybrids that belonged to different FAO maturity groups showed differences in susceptibility to ear and kernel rot.

We describe a new species of velvet gecko (Diplodactylidae: Oedura) from north-east Queensland, Australia. Oedura jowalbinna sp. nov. is a robust, medium-sized (SVL 60–69 mm) gecko that is readily distinguished from its congeners by its distinctive dorsal colour pattern. The dorsum is grey with faint freckling and a pale, dark-edged band across the neck and another across the base of the tail. The combination of a yellow tail and a grey body is also distinctive. Oedura jowalbinna sp. nov. also differs significantly from the most similar congener, O. coggeri, in a multivariate analysis of morphology and scalation, primarily due to its smaller body size, higher interorbital, supralabial and infralabial scale counts, and lower subdigital lamellae scale count. These traits are generally non-overlapping between O. jowalbinna sp. nov. and O. coggeri, however, more individuals of O. jowalbinna sp. nov. need to be assessed to accurately determine variation within the new species. All O. jowalbinna sp. nov. were found at night on overhangs in dissected sandstone escarpment south-west of the town of Laura. Surveys are required to determine the distribution of O. jowalbinna sp. nov. across the sandstone escarpments of the Laura region. This species is the third reptile species (along with the skinks Ctenotus quinkan and C. nullum) described that has a highly localised range centred on the sandstone escarpments of the Laura region. Additionally, included herein is a comparison of O. coggeri and O. monilis. Typical dorsal colour pattern differs between these two species but the large amount of variation (particularly in O. coggeri) merges these differences. Oedura coggeri and O. monilis could not be distinguished in multivariate analyses of morphology and scalation. Genetic data and further analyses of colour pattern, morphology and scalation are required to resolve species boundaries within and between these two species.

The rationale for the need for a continuous search for cherry genotypes, distinguished by self-fertility and high biochemical properties, is given. The article argues that it is necessary to continue research in the field of productivity of sweet cherry cultivars, since the order of fruit formation, fruiting features, and placement of sweet cherry productivity elements are not fully understood and often contradict each other. Information on achievements in breeding, cultivar research and economic and biological assessment of sweet cherry in domestic and foreign research institutions is provided.

The clinical trial was conducted at the premises of the Dental Therapy Department of the Ural State Medical University. There was analyzed thedata on 60 patients having the signs of a dry mouth, having bacterial test provenoral moniliosis. On the basis of the study ndings one can conclude that usingthe foam «Oral Care Foam 2 in 1» regularly improves the quality of oral hygiene care, slows down the process of dental plaque formation and growth in patients with xerostomia caused by medication taking; causes no irritation and can be used for moisturizing purposes. </span></p>

This paper reports the field isolation of orchidaceous rhizoctonias similar to those found recently in pot cultures of vesicular–arbuscular endophytes. The paper describes the morphology and growth of field and pot-culture isolates on different natural and synthetic media and reports light microscope observations on the nuclei and septal pores of hyphal cells. All isolates were the same in regard to the utilisation of simple and complex carbohydrates and different forms of nitrogen. They were all multinucleate and had an inconspicuous septal pore. Consistent differences were found among isolates in the morphology and frequency of chlamydospores and monilioid hyphae and in the rate of growth, shape, type of margin, and colour of colonies. By using these criteria, the fungi were segregated into 10 entities. The observations are discussed in relation to the natural distribution of the fungi and their resemblance to other fungi in the form-genus Rhizoctonia.

Three new species of trilobites, Erixanium lacunatum, Cernuolimbus monilis, and Anechocephalus aphelodermus, have been recovered from two new fossiliferous localities in the normally unfossiliferous Collier Shale in the Ouachita Mountains of west-central Arkansas. These new taxa occur with other trilobites previously reported from the Elvinia Zone in the Collier and elsewhere. Like the other trilobites reported from the Collier, these new taxa were originally deposited on the outer shelf, and were later eroded and redeposited in the adjacent, deep-water basin. Other species assigned to these genera have also been reported from outer shelf or continental slope sites. Species of Erixanium were widely distributed in equatorial and subtropical paleolatitudes in the Late Cambrian.

Isolation and identification of mycorrhizal fungi from the roots of Rhynchostylis retusa indicated that the cultural and microscopic features, namely colony appearance, colony colour, diameter of vegetative hyphae, presence of monilioid cells, right angle branching pattern of the fungal endophyte corroborated the identity of the fungus Rhizoctonia like anamorphs of Ceratobasidium species. Fungal identity was further confirmed through sequencing and analysis of internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences of the nuclear ribosomal DNA (nrDNA). ITS sequence of the isolate RhY10A6 (accession no. MN120903.1) showed > 99% similarity with several isolates of the teleomorphic fungus Ceratobasidium sp. in NCBI mega blast search. The phylogenetic analysis based on maximum parsimony method, this orchid mycorrhizal fungus clustered with several isolates of Ceratobasidium sp. or Rhizoctonia like fungi. It showed near distant relation with Ceratobasidium ramicola (GeneBank accession no. NR_138368.1) which is an orchid mycorrhizal fungus. Therefore, molecular characterization validated the morphological data. The techniques established in this orchid will facilitate to isolate and accurate identification of mycorrhizal fungus.

On the basis of integrated assessment, sweet cherry varieties Yantarnaya Savel’yeva, Mulatka and Lika, characterized by relative winter resistance, complex resistance to moniliosis and coccomicosis, were revealed. The given varieties are promising for commercial use in the southern part of the Central chernozem region. The degree of freezing of wood and vegetative buds after artificial freezing at –35 °C (II component) did not exceed 2.3 points and 1.6 points, respectively. In the field conditions, the degree of damage of these varieties to monilial burn was no more than 0.3 points, to coccomycosis it was 0.7 points, to monilial fruit rot it was 1.3 points. The yielding capacity of these varieties varied from 6.01 to 7.12 t/ha depending on the variety, which amounted to 123.7-146.5 % of the control. Variety were characterized by high commodity-consumer qualities of fruits. The average fruit weight was 5.1-7.1 g, and the overall taste evaluation was 4.6-4.8 points.

The problem being faced by farmer groups in the rainy season is the increased growth of fungi that cause plant diseases, such as Rigdiforus lignosus fungi, Fusarium oxysporum, Rizoctonia solani, Fusarium monilifome, Sclerotium rolfsii, and Sclerotium rilfisil fungi. With the concept of controlling plant-disrupting organisms (OPT) naturally, to get healthy plant cultivation free from disease (especially plant diseases caused by pathogenic fungi), Trichoderma compost (TrichoCompost Fertilizer) is applied. Interviews, face-to-face, counseling, and direct practice methods will do the method to implement this training. This activity aims to train participants to understand how to make Trichoderma compost as organic fertilizer to get healthy organic vegetables. The output target to be achieved is using appropriate technology in cow manure processing technology into compost plus Trichoderma sp. Based on the results of activities, Trichoderma compost can suppress pathogenic fungi by 98.53% so that farmer groups produce healthy plants free of pathogenic diseases.

Seven species of Ablabesmyia were found from Lake Winnipeg, Manitoba, 3 from Marion Lake, British Columbia while other samples from Alberta to Ontario contained no more than one species. Keys are given to Nearctic immatures of Ablabesmyia. The distribution of Ablabesmyia in Lake Winnipeg is mapped and discussed. The separation of larval instars is shown approximately to follow Dyar’s rule.

Pure cultures of endophytic fungi were obtained from the mycorrhizae of some native Alberta orchids (Amerorchis rotundifolia, Calypso bulbosa, Coeloglossum viride, Corallorhiza maculata, Platanthera dilatata, P. hyperborea, P. obtusata). Isolates of Rhizoctonia constituted the largest group of endophytes, but few could be identified to species. One of these strains was identified as Rhizoctonia repens, a species reported to be a ubiquitous and common mycorrhizal fungus of orchids. Another strain produced the teleomorph stage and was identified as Ceratobasidium obscurum. Rhizoctonia anaticula Currah, sp.nov. is described based on five isolates bearing monilioid cells linked by prominent, narrow connections. A second group of isolates consisted of sterile, greenish black to grey fungi. After prolonged incubation, eight of these isolates formed conidia. Two isolates produced phialoconidia and were identified as Phialocephala fortinii. Five isolates, demonstrating sympodial development of conidia in the apical region of swollen or unswollen hyaline conidiogenous cells, are disposed in Leptodontidium orchidicola Sigler & Currah, sp.nov. The remaining conidial isolate was identified as Trichocladium opacum. Two isolates, resembling Rhizoctonia in cultural features, sporulated and are described as Trichosporiella multisporum Sigler & Currah, sp.nov.

Bakanae is one of the major diseases of rice in Bangladesh and causes substantial yield loss. To control the disease eleven fungicides from different fungicidal groups were evaluated for their efficacy against seed-borne fungus, F. moniliforme as seed treatment both in the laboratory and in the seed-bed during 2011 and 2012. In the laboratory the fungicides were evaluated at three concentration levels viz 2.5, 3.0 and 3.5 gm/L/kg seeds. Overall performance of the fungicides was found to be better in suppressing the seed-borne F. monilifome and increasing seed germination. Among the fungicides, Bavistin, Sunphanate, Nativo and Carzeb completely inhibiting the growth of F. moniliformeinvitro condition at their low (2.5 gm/L) concentration. Efficacy of the fungicides reduced to some extent when the treated seeds were washed with fresh water except Bavistin. Maximum (85%) average germination was found in Bavistin and Greenzeb treated seeds. The promising fungicides further evaluated to control seedling infection at low (2.5 gm/L) concentration and resulted significant reduction of bakanae infected seedlings in pot soil and in seed bed.Bangladesh Rice j. 2015, 19(1): 49-55

The oribatid mite genus Caleremaeus (Caleremaeidae) is widely distributed in the northern hemisphere but has been represented by only three extant and one fossil species. We redescribe the North American C. retractus (Banks, 1947) based on adults and nymphs; it is distinguishable from the European type species, C. monilipes (Michael, 1882) by its smaller adult size and minor differences in cuticular structure, and by the elongated, tapered form of seta h1 in nymphs. Two new species are proposed: C. nasutus n. sp. from forest soil in Alabama is unique in having adults with a large anterior rostral lobe (juveniles unknown) bearing lamellar setae; the arboreal C. arboricolus n. sp. from eastern USA and Canada is unique among described extant species in having adults with femoral saccules, a transverse ridge bearing lamellar setae and relatively large notogastral setae, and juveniles with a bothridial seta similar to that of the adult. Based on all available data, Caleremaeus is redescribed and considered the sole genus in Caleremaeidae. The higher classification of the family is reviewed, and past placement in Ameroidea is rejected in favor of the monofamilial Caleremaeoidea.
