Повний текст джерелаIn this thesis work, we were interested in studying the improvement of the optical and electrical properties of OLEDs using square arrays of Ag nanoparticles. In particular, we focused on the study of surface lattice resonance (SLR) modes in order to understand the interaction mechanisms between the NPs in a grating. We have also studied the influence of these modes on the emission characteristics of an organic layer first under optical pumping and then under electrical pumping. For this, we have set up within the LPL laboratory several optical experiments and developed several numerical calculations in order to interpret the obtained results. These latter confirm the crucial role of Rayleigh anomalies in the appearance of directional emission. In the case of OLEDs, the studies carried out show that the presence of short period metallic structures can help to improve the electrical injection process of holes into the organic device. Besides, we show that the insertion of a longue period grating can improve the efficiency of the OLED. However, the existence of collective SLR modes is not guaranteed in this type of configuration and the emission directivity effects require further studies. The results obtained within the framework of this thesis work constitute an important step towards a deep understanding of the interactions between the grating of metallic NPs and the organic emitters and could open the way towards the study and the realization of superriadiant OLEDs, which would constitute an intermediate step to go to the organic laser diode

Повний текст джерелаGround penetrating radar images can be signifiquently improved by multi-mode recordings. Surveys using several configurations of the antennas allow to deduce information on the incident wave sensitivity of the structures, their 3-D location and their depolarizing properties. Pseudo-sections characterized by a low degree of directionality or by a neutral acquisition mode have been computed from these multi-configuration datas, as well as maps of the polarization match factor. Polarimetric surveys have underlined the link between interface depolarization and unusual disturbing phenomena on TE mode common mid point gathers. Sections relative to a directive array of phase-shifted transmitters have been reconstructed from common receiver gathers. The beam adjusting towards several directions allows to a more precise reflector location, a greater maximal investigation depth and improvement concerning the " envelope maximum to envelope minimum ratio ". With the aim to carry out an actual array of transmitters in the [5-50] MHz range, single-element antennas have been built. These latters work properly as receivers and will allow to achieve our final aim. At present, the study consists in the design of the avalanche transistor generator

Повний текст джерелаIn this thesis, we investigate the optical properties of a six-layer stack (air-Au-SiO₂-Au-Ti-glass). The interfaces are flat and the modeling is performed using elementary Fresnel expressions at the interface and plane wave propagation in the layers. Two models are used where the sample is: i) excited by a source at infinity (excitation by source at infinity (ESI)); ii) excited by a local source. In the experiments we are modeling this source consists of the inelastic tunneling electrons from a scanning tunneling microscope (STM). In our modeling this source is replaced by a vertical oscillating dipole. Using these two models one calculates the reflected (reflectance) and the transmitted (transmittance) flux from a source at infinity and the transmitted flux of a local source. Surface plasmon polariton (SPP) and wave guide (WG) modes may be identified in the reflectance, transmittance and transmitted flux. In a particular wavelength domain the SPP and WG repel each other giving rise to an avoided crossing. The choice of the gold (Au) and silica (SiO₂) thicknesses of the six-layer stack is guided by two requirements: high amplitude of the observable and wide wavelength dependence of the in-plane wave vector. We also study the influence of the gold and silica thicknesses on the observables. We find that the observables are significant for dAu[10, 90 nm] for the three and dAu[10, 50 nm] for six layer stacks and this predictive study guided the choice of the experimental sample thicknesses. The wave guide mode appears for dSiO₂ >190 nm. The electric field as a function of the penetration coordinate z is calculated in order to characterize the location of the field in the stack and to assign the nature of the modes. We observe that for the SPP the electric field is confined at the Au-air interface whereas, the electric fields corresponding to the WG mode are confined inside SiO₂ layer. Our calculations presented in this work are in good agreement with the experimental measurements performed in our group

Повний текст джерелаThe surface plasmons on metallic surfaces are excited by the collective oscillations of free electrons. They satisfy certain resonance conditions and their dispersion can be considered as modes of the system. The plasmons at uniform metal-dielectric interfaces manifest as evanescent electromagnetic (EM) fields confined to a few hundreds of nanometers from the metallic surface and propagate along the interface. This mode is called the Propagating surface plasmon (PSP) and is a fundamental plasmonic mode. The other fundamental modes, which are non-propagative, results from collective oscillations of free electrons on curved surfaces of metallic nano-particles. They are called localized surface plasmon (LSP) modes. We have shown that the polarizability of complex geometries with an underlying substrate can be calculated analytically and the results obtained closely approximate the resonance conditions for such geometries.In this work, various other plasmonic modes originating from the two fundamental modes were studied in details and described by their corresponding analytical formulation. In a binary metallic arrays on glass substrate, plasmonic modes are excited by diffraction orders, called the Wood-Rayleigh modes (WRM). In metallic strips the PSP is confined by the finite edges of the strips and propagate along the length of the strips, called the confined propagating plasmons (CPP).For arrays of metallic nano-particles on a metallic film, the Bragg modes (BM) are excited by diffraction of the PSP. In such structures the LSP of the nano-particles and the PSP of the film can undergo a harmonic coupling to give rise to the hybrid lattice plasmon (HLP). The characteristics of the HLP mode for an array of metallic nano-cylinders on a metallic film is presented in details.The effect of the surrounding medium on the plasmonic modes is used in surface plasmon resonance (SPR) detectors which probe the shift in resonance condition of the modes. Such shift is dependent on the intrinsic dispersion of the modes. The aim of this work is to optimize the SPR detectors for affinity biosensing where probe and analyte molecules are bound to the metallic surface. We have shown that by selective functionalization of the metallic biochip surface, an enhancement of the performance of such detection can be achieved in terms of the amount of analyte used. Also the near field enhancement plays a major role in surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). We have shown that the presence of certain modes in the system can enhance the recorded SERS intensity.Rigorous numerical methods, adapted to the particular geometry under study, were developed to compute the near and far field characteristics of different structures. The experimental excitation of the modes and their application in SPR detection was demonstrated using a setup based on a spectral scanning modality operating in the Kretschmann configuration. The various structures were fabricated on a biochip using e-beam lithography at IEF, University Paris Sud and the reflectivity dispersion from the biochip was recorded. Such experimental results were shown to be in close agreement with the theoretical results. SERS experiments were carried out in collaboration with CSPBAT at University Paris 13 and the results were seen to fit closely the theoretically predicted trends.Such detailed description of plasmonic modes can offer a complete understanding of the surface plasmon resonance phenomenon in metallic structures and be optimized as per required for various applications. The theories presented in this work can be used to effectively describe the EM properties of different geometries and experimental configurations. From a comprehensive representation of plasmonic modes, different aspects of the photon-plasmon interactions can thus be elucidated

This thesis describes the design and construction of pressure sensing matrices for capturing human location and activity data from large surfaces in a space such as the floors, walls, tabletops, countertops, and furniture. With the ability to operate either alone or connected to others in an assembly, each sensor module is 0.3m x 2m, contains 512 force sensitive resistors, and has a refresh rate of about 8Hz. Each module was made with conductive inkjet printing and PCB fabrication, creating a low-profile sensing surface with robust signal-collecting circuitry. Several experiments were conducted on an assemblage of three modules to assess parameters such as response time, sensitivity, measurement repeatability, spatial and pressure resolution, and accuracy in analyzing walking data as compared to a camera. Applications that could employ such a system are explored and two visualizations were prototyped that could ambiently provide data and trends to a user.

Повний текст джерелаThis thesis represents a contribution to the understanding of certain water wave phenomena of interest in current research. A number of significant results have been obtained by means of a new free surface measuring technique that has been developed for such studies. This optical profilometric technique consists in projecting a sinuspidal-profile fringe pattern of known characteristics onto the free surface and in observing the projected images from a different direction. The surface deformation, as well as the perspective, introduce a local frequency modulation of the fringe pattern. Analysis of the deformed image and its comparison with a reference image allow for the reconstruction of the free-surface deformation. In particular, this technique presents the advantage of determining the surface's profile from only one image, which allows the study of highly unstationary surface flows. The high spatio-temporal resolution achieved allow, for the first time, the exploration of a vast variety of water wave phenomena. Two major experimental studies on surface waves have been carried out during the course of this thesis. In the first one, we focused on the study of water wave resonances around a circular cylinder of radius a placed symmetrically between the parallel walls of a waveguide of width 2d (trapped modes). This work provides the first complete experimental characterization of trapped modes in the frequency space, as well as a detailed analysis of their spatial structure. These results show an excellent agreement with the predictions available in the literature. The second experimental study conducted in the frame of this thesis regards the turbulence of bending waves in a thin elastic plate. In the case, fully space-time resolved measurements of the plate deformation have been employed to determine, for the first time, the three- dimensional energy spectrum of wave turbulence. Повний текст джерелаThis work deals with the study of a new all optical structuration process of azo-polymer films. We show that the irradiation with normal incidence of an azo-polymer film by a uniform laser beam which wavelength is in the absorption band of the azo-molecules, can lead to the formation of a quasi hexagonal surface relief grating at the surface of a polymer film. After a brief review of different methods of micro and nanostructuration as well as the properties of azo-polymer films in the case of the surface relief gratings formation, we study in the first part of this manuscript the influence of several experimental parameters on the spontaneous optically controlled formation of these photoinduced structures, among them the light polarization direction and the irradiation power. The different results obtained in our case are then compared with different photo-assisted structuration processes already proposed and whose physical origins are clearly established, in order to determine the key parameters governing the formation of these hexagonal structures as well as their origins. In the second part, a synthesis of the different experiments performed in order to evaluate the validity of effects so called "optical feedback effect" observed in liquid crystal light valve systems is performed. The interpretation of the photoinduced hexagonal structuration process appears to be difficult: it is not excluded that an optical feedback phenomenon could be at the origin of the structuration process, but at the present, according to the different experiments performed, a new and original phenomenon of structuration adapted to azo-polymers films cannot be excluded in order to fully explain the different results obtained

Повний текст джерелаThis work is devoted to the analysis of propagating and surface acoustic waves in granular phononic crystals in thelinear regime. First, the propagation and localization of transversal-rotational waves in a two-dimensional granularchain of equal masses are analyzed. By considering the semi-infinite chain with a boundary condition applied at itsbeginning, the analytical study demonstrates the existence of localized modes, each mode composed of two evanescentmodes. Secondly, the phononic properties of a two-dimensional discrete phononic crystal, made of circular cross-section, infinitely long contacting elastic cylinders arranged on a simple cubic lattice, are described analytically. The theoretical analysis provides a clear physical explanation for the existence of a zero-group velocity point of the lowest-energy acoustic mode in particular directions of the phononic crystal and demonstrates the birefraction phenomenon. Finally, the existence of surfaces elastic waves at mechanically free surface of granular phononic crystals is presented. Depending on the degrees of freedom of the particles, different types of surface waves exist in the structure. First, Rayleigh type surface waves aredemonstrated in a granular phononic crystal with particles possessing two translational and one rotational degrees offreedom; and secondly, shear-horizontal surface waves are studied in a granular phononic crystal with particlespossessing two rotational and one translational degrees of freedom. A comparison with surface waves predicted by theCosserat theories is made in order to establish the limitations of the Cosserat theories

Повний текст джерелаAprès un rappel des méthodes classiques de micro et nanostructuration ainsi que des propriétés des polymères azoïques dans le cadre de la création de réseaux de surface, la première partie du manuscrit est consacrée à l'étude de l'influence de divers paramètres expérimentaux sur la formation spontanée de ces structures, parmi lesquels la polarisation du faisceau d'écriture ou bien encore la puissance d'irradiation. Une comparaison des résultats obtenus dans notre cas avec différents processus de structuration photo-assistés déjà étudiés et dont les origines physiques sont clairement établies est ensuite effectuée, ceci afin de déterminer les paramètres clefs gouvernant la création de ces structures hexagonales en même temps que leurs origines.
Dans une seconde partie, une synthèse des différentes expériences réalisées en vue d'évaluer la validité d'effets dits de « feedback optique » tels que ceux observés dans des systèmes de valves à cristaux liquides est effectuée. Ceci a permis de mettre en évidence la difficulté d'interprétation du processus de structuration hexagonal photoinduit : il n'est pas exclu qu'un phénomène de feedback optique soit à l'origine du processus de structuration, mais dans l'état actuel des différentes expériences ayant pu être menées, un phénomène nouveau et original de structuration propre aux polymères azoïques ne peut être écarté afin d'expliquer totalement les différents résultats obtenus.
Enfin, la dernière partie de ce travail est consacrée à la mise en oeuvre de ces structures hexagonales dans des dispositifs photoniques et plus particulièrement dans des diodes électroluminescentes organiques, ceci afin de contrôler leurs propriétés d'émission. Il est notamment démontré que dans le cas d'un pompage optique, due à la diffraction de Bragg, il est possible d'augmenter le rendement d'émission de tels dispositifs en découplant une partie de la lumière initialement guidée dans les différentes couches de la diode. Due à l'orientation hexagonales des structures, l'augmentation du rendement apparaît comme étant plus importante que celle obtenue lors de l'utilisation d'un réseau unidimensionnel.

Повний текст джерелаIn this thesis, we investigate several topics related to the interannual climatic modes in the tropical Atlantic. Statistical analyses allows us to extract the two main dominant modes of interannual variability: an equatorial mode and a meridional mode. The equatorial mode is responsible for Sea Surface Temperature (SST) anomalies mainly found in the Gulf of Guinea and is linked to variations of the sea-level slope in the equatorial band. It is due to dynamic feedbacks between zonal wind, sea level and SST. The meridional mode is characterised by inter-hemispheric SST fluctuations and is controlled by dynamic and thermodynamic feedbacks between the wind, evaporation and SST. After quantifying the coupling between key variables involved in the meridional mode, we develop a conceptual model to explain the main mechanisms responsible for meridional mode oscillations. The model shows that the meridional mode results from the superposition of a self-sustaining mechanism based on positive and negative feedbacks generating regular oscillations of high frequency (2-3 years) and another low frequency oscillation mechanism (4-9 years) related to the influence of ENSO. As the evolution of these two modes is strongly linked to the meridional shift of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) and associated rainfall maximum, we identify the signature of these modes on Sea Surface Salinity (SSS) using in situ observations and a regional numerical simulation. Oceanic and/or atmospheric processes responsible for the signature of each mode are also identified through a mixed-layer salt budget in the validated model. The salt balance reveals that the atmospheric forcing, related to the ITCZ migration, controls the equatorial region while the advection, due to the modulation of current dynamics, the vertical gradient and mixing at the base of the mixed layer, explains SSS variations in regions under the influence of plumes. Finally, we study the Equatorial Kelvin wave characteristics and influences on the density that are involved in the meridional and equatorial mode connection processes, using a very simplified model of gravity wave propagation along the equator. After a brief description of this model, which was initially constructed to study dynamics in the equatorial Pacific, we apply it to the specific case of the equatorial Atlantic by validating its analytical and numerical solutions under adiabatic conditions. Повний текст джерелаFocusing optical energy into a small spot diameter much smaller than the diffraction limit has long been a very interesting topic in photonics. In Terahertz (with a wavelength of about 300 microns) this challenge is particularly important to meet the growing interest in high-resolution imaging and spectroscopy of materials whose size is smaller than the wavelength in free space. In my thesis, I studied the confinement of surface waves at THz frequencies on metal structures with sub-wavelength dimensions . I experimentally measured the confinement of the electric field and calculated the dispersion relation of the surface mode on a metal structure deposited on a low permittivity dielectric substrate. These measurements are obtained using a guided-wave time domain spectroscopy set-up, developed during my PhD. The measurement is made by a near-field freely positionable electro-optical probe. These experimental results are supplemented by numerical simulations obtained by finite element analysis software Comsol Multiphysics. The experimental results show a confinement of λ/20 of the EM surface mode on a sub-wavelength dimension rectangular metal wire

Повний текст джерелаMicrobubbles find use in several domains, one of them being medical ultrasound applications. Different characteristics of those bubbles such as their acoustic resonance or their destructive effect during inertial cavitation can be exploited. Another phenomenon induced around acoustically excited bubbles is microstreaming, that means a relatively slow mean flow with respect to the fast bubble oscillations. Microstreaming and its associated shear stresses are commonly agreed to play a role in the permeabilization of cell membranes, a detailed understanding of the induced flows is however missing. To acquire basic physical knowledge, this work focuses on the characterization of streaming induced around an air bubble in water, more precisely around a single acoustically trapped and excited, nonspherically oscillating bubble. The experimental part consists of two steps. First, the bubble dynamics, in particular the triggered shape mode and the orientation of the bubble have to be controlled. For this, the use of bubble coalescence proves to be an adequate method. In a second step, the microstreaming is recorded in parallel to bubble dynamics. This allows to correlate the obtained streaming patterns to the respective shape oscillations. The large number of obtained pattern types can be classified, in particular with respect to the mode number and bubble size. A close investigation of the bubble dynamics allows furthermore deducing the important physical mechanisms which lead to such a variety of streaming patterns. In order to confirm the experimental findings, an analytical model has been developed. It is based upon time-averaged second-order fluid mechanics equations and the experimentally obtained bubble dynamics serves as input parameters. Supplementary to the microstreaming work, this manuscript contains a short section on directed jetting of contrast agent microbubbles, which might appear at high acoustic driving. The impact of those microjets on cell membranes presents another mechanism made responsible for the permeabilization of cell membranes
