Повний текст джерелаChemical reactors are extensively used in chemical and pharmaceutical industries. The underlying temperature control has shown to be of fundamental importance from product quality and process reproductibility points of view. This thesis presents a control approach to deal with the temperature servo problem in exothermic stirred tank batch reactors. Two features of this research work are worth to be emphasized. The first one consists in an engineering design framework for the control. The underlying design can be performed using various control techniques that heavily borrows from the concepts of prediction, state feedback linearization, sliding mode, backstepping and the high gain. A filtered integral action is incorporated into the design for free offset performance and noise measurements insensitivity considerations. The second one consists in likely high gain observer to perform an accurate estimation of the reaction heat to alleviate the control system performances. The performances the proposed approach are illustrated in a realistic simulation framework with respect to the problem under consideration

Повний текст джерелаThis thesis focuses on solving coupled problems of models of interest for the simulation of severe accidents in nuclear reactors~: these coarse-grained models allow for fast calculations for statistical analysis used for risk assessment and solutions of large problems when considering the whole severe accident scenario. However, this modeling approach has several numerical flaws. Besides, in this industrial context, computational efficiency is of great importance leading to various numerical constraints. The objective of this research is to analyze the applicability of explicit coupling strategies to solve such coupled problems and to design implicit coupling schemes allowing stable and accurate computations. The proposed schemes are theoretically analyzed and tested within CEA's procor{} platform on a problem of heat conduction solved with coupled lumped parameter models and coupled 1D models. Numerical results are discussed and allow us to emphasize the benefits of using the designed coupling schemes instead of the usual explicit coupling schemes

Повний текст джерелаHybrid vesicles, resulting from the combined self-assembly of amphiphilic copolymers and phospholipids, have been the subject of growing interest for several years. These assemblies can be seen as advanced vesicular structures compared to liposomes and polymersomes. They combine the chemical versatility and mechanical stability of the polymer membrane with the bio-functionality and permeability of the lipid membrane. These objects could be used in several fields: nano-reactor for enzymatic reactions, biomimetic model of cell membrane, etc. Previous work at the LCPO has led to the development of hybrid vesicles, mainly from triblock copolymers PEO-b-PDMS-b-PEO. However, these systems have shown limitations in terms of mechanical properties, since they have lower lysis strain than liposomes. The mixture of conformations (loop and extended) of triblock copolymers in the membrane would be at the origin of the poor mechanical stability of hybrid membranes. One approach to solve this problem is to control the conformation of polymer chains in the membrane. In this context, the objective of this thesis is to develop hybrid systems by substituting triblock copolymers with PDMS-b-PEO diblock copolymers. The latter are organized in bilayers in the membrane in the same way as phospholipids, which could stabilize the polymer/lipid interfaces.The work of this thesis consisted in synthesizing a series of diblock copolymers PDMS-b-PEO that can form polymersomes. The self-assembly parameters of the LUVs were determined (critical aggregation concentration, radius of gyration and hydrodynamics, number of aggregations, etc.). Membrane thickness measurements were performed by Cryo-TEM and neutron scattering. We were also interested in the membrane properties of polymersomes (fluidity and mechanical properties).Micrometric (GHUV) and nanometric (LHUV) hybrid vesicles were obtained from diblock copolymers and POPC, a model lipid. LHUV membrane formation and structuration was studied by Cryo-TEM, neutron scattering and fluorescence spectroscopy while GHUV membrane formation and structuration was checked by confocal microscopy. Different membrane structurations have been obtained for GHUVs, depending on the molar mass of thecopolymer or on the lipid composition. On the other hand, the LHUV’s membranes appear to be homogeneous, regardless of the lipid fraction used.The permeability and mechanical properties of the hybrid membranes could be modulated according to the lipid composition. Surprisingly, polymersomes seem more permeable than liposomes. On the other hand, the use of diblock copolymers improve the mechanical properties of the hybrid membranes. The toughness values obtained are much higher than those measured for liposomes and for hybrid vesicles composed of triblock copolymers.Finally, the line tension associated with polymer/lipid interfaces was measured for the first time for hybrid systems. The line tension values founded are comparable to those measured for multi-phase lipid membranes

Повний текст джерелаIntensified heat exchanger reactors are promising technologies in the current industrial context because of their high potential to significantly reduce heat and mass transfer limitations compared to conventional reactors. However, the absence of simulation software for predicting their performances and optimising their geometry inside a flowsheet is limiting the industrialisation of these units. Preliminary to the development of such a simulation tool, flow characteristics, internal and external mass transfers inherent to heterogeneous catalytic reactions, convective, conductive, diffusive and radiative heat transfers are analysed, allowing the definition of simplifying assumptions. The identified relevant phenomena are then modelled and constitute the physical base of ProSec Reaction, the new heat exchanger-reactor simulation software. This software is validated by comparing the predicted values to the Air Liquide steam reforming pilot plant results and to three-dimensional simulation results as well (CFD). The excellent consistency between numerical and experimental results demonstrates the accuracy and the predictive potential of the developed one-dimensional model. In the specific case of wall-coated plate-fin heat exchanger reactors, a discrete two-dimensional model is built and allows the representation of radial temperature gradients in the material, which are intrinsic to these specific heat exchangers. Finally, optimisation perspectives of the Air Liquide pilot plant heat exchanger reactor channel geometry are evaluated thanks to ProSec Reaction. They demonstrate the flexibility and the benefits of this new simulation tool

Повний текст джерелаThis thesis deals with the experimental study of gas-solid flows and the modeling of fluidized bed reactors. The industrial application investigated in this work corresponds to the carbochlorination of zirconium dioxide (ZrO2), which is an essential step for the production of zirconium metal. The main objective is to develop a model of the industrial reactors and provide a better understanding of their behavior. The approach consists first in studying the hydrodynamics of fluidized bed carbochlorination reactors. The results show that the carbon black acts as a flow conditioner (glidant) and improves the flow properties of the ZrO2/C mixture. The presence of tiny spherical carbon nanoparticles on the surface of relatively large oxide particles reduces the interparticle forces and friction between adjacent particles. A good dispersion of the carbon nanoparticles is needed to enhance their ability to act as a glidant and also increase the resistance to segregation of the resulting mixture. From the experimental data, different methods and correlations are developed to predict the agglomerate size and density, the minimum fluidization velocity, the bed expansion and the elutriation flow rate. Then, a carbochlorination reactor model is developed by coupling hydrodynamics and kinetics. This model allows the resolution of unsteady-state mass and energy balance equations as well as population balance equations. It is thus possible to predict the chlorine conversion, the composition of the product gas, the elutriation flow rate and the particle size distribution in the bed depending on the operating conditions

Повний текст джерелаMolten salts have been recently proposed as high-temperature heat carrier media for energy applications. In the nuclear industry, the Molten Salt Reactors (MSRs) are the only fourth generation concept proposing the usage of a liquid nuclear fuel. This innovative aspect allows proposing improved safety and design features, but it leads to novel challenges. In particular, the Molten Salt Fast Reactor (MSFR) is a MSR concept that is currently being studied in the H2020 European project SAMOFAR. Among the project activities, there are the development of more performant molten salts models and their experimental validation through the SWATH platform. This is the objective of the present thesis. However, the models developed are appropriate for other MSRs and other energy applications using molten salts as heat carrier media.The following thesis is divided into three parts.The first part is dedicated to the development of models for describing realistically some of the microscopic and macroscopic thermal phenomena associated with the usage of liquid molten salts as heat carrier media. This part includes the development and implementation of neutronic models to study nuclear power production in the MSFR, the study of turbulence and turbulence-radiation interaction in molten salt flows and the development of a multiscale approach to model the solidification/melting phenomena in salts.The second part is devoted to the design and implementation of dedicated experiments for validating these models. Two key experiments are addressed: an experiment to study the behavior of different turbulence models after a boundary layer detachment and one to test the multiscale solidification models developed for molten salts.The third part is committed to the coupling of the models developed into a multiphysics platform for the precise study of the draining transient of the MSFR

Повний текст джерелаThis study aims to intensify the ethanol production with Saccharomyces cerevisiae in a continuous Two-stage Bioreactor with Cell Recycle (TBRC). For this purpose, the bioreactor process and the dynamic behaviour of the yeast were modelled, based on the mass balance and kinetic equations by distinguishing total and viable biomass. It takes into account the yeast physiological states which differ with the environment in the two stages. The TBRC aims to use optimally the yeast potentialities ; it combines the decoupling of growth and ethanol production in two different compartments, the gain of high cell density and the management of the cellular activity by the biomass recycling between the two stages. Cultures allowed the quantification of the yeast behaviour in each stage, in transient and steady states, for various operating conditions. Confrontation between theory and experiment is very satisfactory. The numerical analysis of the operational parameters influence on the TBRC performances and the yeast dynamic behaviour in the two stages are presented. Using the model as a predictive tool, we validated the relevance of the TBRC for the ethanol production intensification, in steady-state continuous mode, up to an ethanol productivity of 40 g. L-1. H-1, an ethanol title of 8,3 °GL and a null residual substrate concentration

Повний текст джерелаCurrent silicon micro-machining techniques make now possible the manufacturing of micro-structured reactors with inner dimensions as low as a few micrometers. A major consequence of their high surface-to-volume ratio is a significant increase of heat and mass transfers which make them appropriate for the investigation of demanding reactions. In spite of the increasing amount of research in this field, very few devices can be used at both high pressure and temperature for the study of gas-liquid reactions. Therefore, several film and dispersed phase contactors have been designed and manufactured, notably with the help of Computational Fluid Dynamics. Taylor flow based contactors, considered as the more convenient in terms of hydrodynamics, were caracterized using an asymetric hydrogenation (30°C, 1-5bar) as well as a partial liquid phase oxidation (200°C, 25bar). Thanks to the intrinsic safety of micro-channels, the latter was also conducted with an enriched oxygen gas feed, thus leading to a significant improvement of the reactor’s productivity
