A module M is said to be H-supplemented if, for any submodule X of M, there exists a direct summand M′ of M such that M = X + Y if and only if M = M′ + Y for all Y ⊆ M (cf. [S. H. Mohamed and B. J. Müller, Continuous and Discrete Modules, London Mathematical Society Lecture Note Series, Vol. 147 (Cambridge University Press, 1999)]). We say that a module M is semi-lifting if any direct summand of M is H-supplemented. A H-supplemented module is a dual to a Goldie-extending module which was introduced by Akalan–Birkenmeier–Tercan [Goldie extending modules, Comm. Algebra37 (2009) 663–683]. In this paper, we give some characterizations of semi-lifting modules and H-supplemented modules. In addition, we consider generalizations of relative projectivities and apply them to the study of direct sums of semi-lifting modules.

AbstractThis report illustrates the context and development of the Intercultural Learning module, provided by the Modern Language Centre (MLC), King’s College London. The Intercultural Learning Module is a one semester undergraduate course mostly attended by visiting study abroad students. The module aims to enhance students’ intercultural awareness and skills through an interdisciplinary approach comprising Cultural Studies, Applied Linguistics, Anthropology, Psychology and Research Methods. Throughout the course students carry out an ethnographic project on a cultural topic of their choice, for which they are assessed. The principles and tools of ethnography are deeply embedded in the module content as a process of cultural observation and discovery. Over the past three years, students’ feedback has been very positive and participant numbers have increased consistently. Four parallel classes (2 per semester) run per academic year. Resulting from the increasing popularity of the course and from the internationalisation strategy of the College, the MLC is currently offering a number ofad hoctraining sessions on intercultural awareness and communication to different departments and members of the public. Training sessions differ from the module in depth and scope, but they are underpinned by the same reflection on intercultural theory and practical examples tailored to the audience.

This is a report on how I integrated coaching techniques into my teaching of information literacy (IL) to 28 FHEQ Level 4 (Year 1) English undergraduates at Brunel University London, UK, during January 2021-April 2021. This was part of a compulsory module, titled Digital Literacy. During this time, it was held online due to COVID-19 lockdowns and, since restrictions have been lifted, I have started teaching this face to face in a flat classroom on the University campus.

The aim of this practice report is to discuss the implementation of a service-learning module developed to support the psychological wellbeing of postgraduate students and older adults in the community, with a view to fostering their connection and tackling loneliness in both populations. The module, ‘Self-Identity, Intergenerational and Intercultural Learning’ (SIIL), was offered to students enrolled in the Mental Health Studies Master of Science at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience, King’s College London. The module included lectures on the scientific underpinnings of wellbeing and ageism positionally within intercultural and intergenerational contexts. Students were introduced to qualitative research with a focus on autoethnography. They engaged with older adults through phone conversations and undertook wellbeing-promoting experiential exercises and self-reflection. The interactions provided students the opportunity to learn at an academic and personal level, while allowing older adults to share their experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic. These lessons learnt will inform future practice. Future directions for further developments of this methodology in other disciplines are also discussed in this practice report.

We introduce and investigate in this paper a kind of Tate homology of modules over a commutative coherent ring based on Tate ℱC-resolutions, where C is a semidualizing module. We show firstly that the class of modules admitting a Tate ℱC-resolution is equal to the class of modules of finite 𝒢(ℱC)-projective dimension. Then an Avramov–Martsinkovsky type exact sequence is constructed to connect such Tate homology functors and relative homology functors. Finally, motivated by the idea of Sather–Wagstaff et al. [Comparison of relative cohomology theories with respect to semidualizing modules, Math. Z. 264 (2010) 571–600], we establish a balance result for such Tate homology over a Cohen–Macaulay ring with a dualizing module by using a good conclusion provided in [E. E. Enochs, S. E. Estrada and A. C. Iacob, Balance with unbounded complexes, Bull. London Math. Soc. 44 (2012) 439–442].

Soils have nonlinear stiffness and develops irrecoverable strains even at very small strain levels. Accurate modeling of stress-strain behaviour at various strain levels is very important for predicting the deformation of soils. Some existing stress-strain models are reviewed and evaluated firstly. And then a new simple non-linear stress-strain model is proposed. Four undetermined parameters involved in the proposed model can be obtained through maximum Young’s module, deformation module, and limit deviator stress and linearity index of soils that can be measured from experiment directly or calculated by empirical formulas indirectly. The effectiveness of the proposed stress-strain model is examined by predicting stress-strain curves measured in plane-strain compression test on Toyota sand and undrained triaxial compression test on London clay. The fitting results of the proposed model are in good agreement with experimental data, which verify the effectiveness of the model.

Background Training for robot-assisted thoracic lobectomy remains an issue, prompting the development of virtual reality simulators. Our aim was to assess the construct and face validity of a new thoracic lobectomy module on the RobotiX Mentor, a robotic surgery simulator. We also aimed to determine the acceptability and feasibility of implementation into training. Methods This prospective, observational, and comparative study recruited novice (n = 16), intermediate (n = 9), and expert (n = 5) participants from King's College London, the 25th European Conference on General Thoracic Surgery, and the Society of Robotic Surgery conference 2018. Each participant completed two familiarization tasks followed by the Guided Robotic Lobectomy module and an evaluation questionnaire. Outcome measures were compared using Mann-Whitney U tests. Results Construct validity was demonstrated in 12/21 performance evaluation metrics. Significant differences between groups were found in all metrics including: time taken to complete module, vascular injury, respect for tissue, number of stapler firings, time instruments out of view, number of instrument collisions, and number of movements. Participants deemed aspects of the simulator (mean 3/5) and module (3/5) as realistic and rated the simulator as both acceptable (3.8/5) and feasible (3.8/5) for robotic surgical training. Conclusions Face validity, acceptability, and feasibility were established for the thoracic lobectomy module of the RobotiX Mentor simulator. Moderate evidence of construct validity was also demonstrated. With further work, this simulation module could help to reduce the initial part of the learning curve for trainees and decrease the risk of errors during live training.

Both natural and engineered networks are often modular. Whether a network node interacts with only nodes from its own module or nodes from multiple modules provides insight into its functional role. The participation coefficient ( PC) is typically used to measure this attribute, although its value also depends on the size and connectedness of the module it belongs to and may lead to nonintuitive identification of highly connected nodes. Here, we develop a normalized PC that reduces the influence of intramodular connectivity compared with the conventional PC. Using brain, C. elegans, airport, and simulated networks, we show that our measure of participation is not influenced by the size or connectedness of modules, while preserving conceptual and mathematical properties, of the classic formulation of PC. Unlike the conventional PC, we identify London and New York as high participators in the air traffic network and demonstrate stronger associations with working memory in human brain networks, yielding new insights into nodal participation across network modules.

James Alexander Green, known as Sandy, was a mathematician of great influence and distinction. He was an algebraist, famous for his work on modular representations of finite groups, and the development of the theory of polynomial representations of general linear groups. He was elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (1968) and Fellow of the Royal Society of London (1987). He was awarded prizes of the London Mathematical Society, a Senior Berwick Prize (in 1984) and the De Morgan Medal (in 2001). In his doctoral thesis, on semigroups, Sandy introduced fundamental relations, now known as ‘Green's relations’. He determined the characters of arbitrary finite general linear groups published 1955. Sandy then turned to representations of finite groups over fields of prime characteristic; his work laid the foundations for the module theoretic approach to the subject. His next highlight is his monograph on polynomial representations of GL n , published in 1980, which has become the basis for algebraic highest weight theory. Furthermore, in 1995 he proved a fundamental result on Hall algebras, establishing a connection between quantum groups and representations of finite-dimensional quiver algebras.

As cultural sector practice becomes increasingly dependent on digital technologies for the production, display, and dissemination of art and material heritage, it is important that those working in the sector understand the basic scientific principles underpinning these technologies and the social, political and economic implications of exploiting them. The understanding of issues in cultural heritage preservation and digital heritage begins in the education of the future stakeholders and the innovative integration of technologies into the curriculum. This paper gives an example of digital technology skills embedded into a module in the interdisciplinary UCL Bachelor of Arts and Sciences, named “Technologies in Arts and Cultural Heritage”, at University College London.

This paper reports on a case study which aims to recreate the hearing voices symptom in schizophrenia. The case study was submitted for a co-curricular module at King’s College London by a first-year undergraduate Music student, Bethany James, and was created using the web application, Mahara. The core of the case study consists of a soundscape of both everyday and unusual sounds, in conjunction with an original musical composition. The paper describes the case study and discusses it using chaos narrative as an analytical lens. The paper argues that the case study (‘A Beautiful Mind – Artefact’) effectively evokes the hearing voices symptom, conveying a lucid sense of the experience to non-sufferers and thus potentially creating use value for clinicians and care workers.

Traditional finance explains all human activity on the ground of rationality and suggests all decisions are rational because all current information is reflected in the prices of goods. Unfortunately, the development of information technology and a growth of demand for new, attractive possibilities of investment caused the process of searching new, unique signals supporting investment decisions. Such a situation is similar to risk-taking, so it must elicit the emotional reactions of individual traders. The paper aims to verify the question that the market risk may be the determinant of traders’ emotions, and if volatility is a useful tool during the investment process as the measure of traders’ optimism, similarly to Majewski’s work (2019). Likewise, various econometric types of models of estimation of the risk parameter were used in the research: classical linear using OLS, general linear using FGLS, and GARCH(p, q) models using maximum likelihood method. Hypotheses were verified using the data collected from the most popular world stock exchanges: New York, Frankfurt, Tokyo, and London. Data concerned stock exchange indexes such as SP500, DAX, Nikkei, and UK100.

AbstractWe introduce quasi-invariant polynomials for an arbitrary finite complex reflection group W. Unlike in the Coxeter case, the space of quasi-invariants of a given multiplicity is not, in general, an algebra but a module Qk over the coordinate ring of a (singular) affine variety Xk. We extend the main results of Berest et al. [Cherednik algebras and differential operators on quasi-invariants, Duke Math. J. 118 (2003), 279–337] to this setting: in particular, we show that the variety Xk and the module Qk are Cohen–Macaulay, and the rings of differential operators on Xk and Qk are simple rings, Morita equivalent to the Weyl algebra An(ℂ) , where n=dim Xk. Our approach relies on representation theory of complex Cherednik algebras introduced by Dunkl and Opdam [Dunkl operators for complex reflection groups, Proc. London Math. Soc. (3) 86 (2003), 70–108] and is parallel to that of Berest et al. As an application, we prove the existence of shift operators for an arbitrary complex reflection group, confirming a conjecture of Dunkl and Opdam. Another result is a proof of a conjecture of Opdam, concerning certain operations (KZ twists) on the set of irreducible representations of W.

Abstract. With the rise in usage of digital twins in the field of urban planning, the integration of data sources such as sensor data in 3D city models is a challenge that is often brought up. This is even more so with movement data, as they contain a geographical or geometrical aspect that is often overlooked. This paper looks at existing methods to integrate sensor data with 3D city models, and especially at the Dynamizer module in CityGML that supports the integration of dynamic data into the models directly. We look at how the Dynamizer module works with movement data and compare it with another method, SensorThings API. The comprehensive investigation we conduct involved different types of movement data, at different spatial and temporal scales, e.g. origin-destination public transport data in Singapore and London, migration routes in the USA, and highly detailed customer movement in a supermarket in China. While the Dynamizer is more flexible in representing data, it has less support and it is more restrictive when accessing the data. On the other hand, the FROST-Server implementation of the SensorThings API is more restrictive in representing data, however, accessing the data is more flexible.

Background: Deliberate practice is one aspect of gaining competency in surgical skills. We have previously integrated a vascular microsurgery module into our residency training curriculum, and have recently described our experience with constructing patient-specific spine models for simulating lumbar spinal durotomy repair. The goal of this project is to develop the necessary infrastructure to facilitate practice on the spine model during residency. Methods: A 3D-printed plastic lumbar spine model was created from a patient computed tomography scan. L2 was manually laminectomized, and paraspinal tissues were simulated using Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) Plastisol. Harvested bovine pericardium was sewn into tubular form as a dural substitute. The pericardial tubes were tied at either end and attached to intravenous tubing to create a closed loop water system. Results: We are developing a video tutorial describing how to setup and use the model. Residents will be recorded while performing a 1.5 cm durotomy and repair using a surgical microscope available in our training laboratory (Drake-Hunterian Neurovascular Laboratory, London, Ontario, Canada). Residents are asked to grade the realism of the model using a questionnaire. Metrics of quality are to be determined. Conclusions: Our proposed model is a cost-effective, easy-to-prepare lumbar spinal simulator that facilitates microsurgical practice during neurosurgical residency.

The elicitation of non-functional and functional needs is one of the most critical jobs of a requirement engineer. This scenario involves the imposition of limits on non-functional needs, whereas functional requirements call for the operation of a system in order to carry out functionality. Over the last few years, agile software development approaches have gained widespread acceptance in the software industry as a problem-solving paradigm. Non-functional requirements (NFRs) are frequently cited as a point of contention in non-functional requirements (NFR) approaches. As well as functional requirements like speed and efficiency, security is desired, amongst a host of other things. Aspects like usability, security, and privacy must all be taken into account. Functional needs must be treated as though they were first-class under the current industry standard of practice. Functional requirements are distinguished from non-functional requirements by the fact that only implemented requirements can be evaluated. To give an example, this method attracts the attention of the system's end users to a critical defect in its architecture. Projects of this type frequently fail because to dissatisfaction among the target audience. If you'd like a great demonstration, consider the London Ambulance System. When dealing with non-compliance to the necessary degree of detail, it is feasible to raise the likelihood of software success this is the first study of its kind in its sector to bring attention to the most critical NFR issues. The problems that arise during the elicitation stage of requirement engineering in agile base models. It also outlines the techniques and strategies that are being considered. Proposed in the literature as a means of dealing with these problems.

<b><i>Objectives:</i></b> The disruption to surgical training and medical education caused by the global COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the need for realistic, reliable, and engaging educational opportunities available outside of the operating theatre and accessible for trainees of all levels. This article presents the design and development of a virtual reality curriculum which simulates the surgical mentorship experience outside of the operating theatre, with a focus on surgical anatomy and surgical decision-making. <b><i>Method:</i></b> This was a multi-institutional study between London’s King’s College and Imperial College. The index procedure selected for the module was robotic radical prostatectomy. For each stage of the surgical procedure, subject-matter experts (<i>N</i> = 3) at King’s College London, identified (1) the critical surgical-decision making points, (2) critical anatomical landmarks, and (3) tips and techniques for overcoming intraoperative challenges. Content validity was determined by an independent panel of subject-matter experts (<i>N</i> = 8) at Imperial College, London, using Fleiss’ kappa statistic. The experts’ teaching points were combined with operative footage and illustrative animations, and projected onto a virtual reality headset. The module was piloted to surgical science students (<i>N</i> = 15). Quantitative analysis compared participants’ confidence regarding their anatomical knowledge before and after taking the module. Qualitative data were gathered from students regarding their views on using the virtual reality model. <b><i>Results:</i></b> Multi-rater agreement between experts was above the 70.0% threshold for all steps of the procedure. Seventy-three percentage of pilot study participants “agreed” or “strongly agreed” that they achieved a better understanding of surgical anatomy and the rationale behind each procedural step. This was reflected in an increase in the median knowledge score after trialing the curriculum (<i>p</i> &#x3c; 0.001). 100% of subject-matter experts and 93.3% of participants “agreed” or “strongly agreed” that virtual mentorship would be useful for future surgical training. <b><i>Conclusions:</i></b> This study demonstrated that virtual surgical mentorship could be a feasible and cost-effective alternative to traditional training methods with the potential to improve technical skills, such as operative proficiency and nontechnical skills such as decision-making and situational judgement.

Abstract Leicester School of Art final year students have been working with AEDES Aedes Network Campus (ANCB) in Berlin for three years. Since 1980, AEDEs Architecture Forum has been exhibiting and publishing internationally acclaimed and pioneering architecture alongside its urban environment. AEDES was founded, as the product of a thoughts cess, to introduce contemporary architecture for public consideration. In August 2018, I discussed working within the area of housing particularly low-cost housing in Berlin, and more particularly as the State of Brandenburg was investing in 100,000 new dwelling for low to medium income families. As part of this process we decided to imagine a micro living unit which we would investigate as the first project of the year for our students as part of a Technology module that proceeds the major design project in the year. The unit could be based in Berlin or London.

Introduction: The annual National Diabetes Inpatient Audit (NaDIA) in the UK continues to show a high incidence of insulin errors in patients admitted to hospital with diabetes. It is clear that new initiatives are urgently required to mitigate this risk.Method: The Joint British Diabetes Societies for Inpatient Care (JBDS-IP) organised the fifth national Rowan Hillson Inpatient Safety Award on the theme of the best inpatient diabetes educational initiative to improve patient safety in hospitals.Result: The winner was Kath Higgins and the team from the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust for their ITS Diabetes – Inpatient Diabetes Training & Support programme – an educational toolkit accessible to medical, nursing and pharmacy staff. Components included face-to-face training, e-learning module, monthly newsletter social media communications with competency document and flashcards. The initiative reduced insulin errors and in-hospital diabetic ketoacidosis. There were two teams in second position. Michael Lloyd and colleagues from St Helens and Knowsley Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust received the award for their individualised and shared insulin prescribing error feedback system, Safe Insulin TipS (SIPS), and multi-professional simulation-based training. Ruth Miller and colleagues in North West London were commended for the project to implement Diabetes 10 Point Training in Acute Hospitals across North West London. This clinically-based teaching programme provided quick training specifically designed for all hospital settings to address the commonest diabetes errors. Conclusion: These and similar schemes need to be developed, promoted and shared to reduce insulin errors in hospitalised patients with diabetes.

abstractThis paper was presented at an Ordinary Meeting of the Institute, held at the Royal Entomological Society, London, on Wednesday 20 April 1988.The current method of artillery survey is reviewed and its limitations examined in the light of both the system error budget and the envisaged battlefield threat. The concept of the Automatic Gun Laying System (AGLS) is introduced as a means of enhancing the effectiveness and survivability of the self-propelled gun element through the application of modern inertial navigation (IN) technology. As a complement to this, the use of IN technology to provide a vehicle-mounted target observation capability is also presented. The paper describes a unified treatment of the artillery system, leading to the selection of the respective IN solutions, and concludes that a standard module is both appropriate and optimal. Environmental factors are discussed, together with the alternative sensors and systems considered. The paper concludes with brief comments on the status of inertial navigation within the military land area.

This special academic event was organized by the Sociology of Religion(Socrel) Study Group of the British Sociological Association in London on December7, 2013. One of its main objectives was to discuss, in the light of negativepublicity and the increasing number of Muslim students pursuing certainprofessions, whether “Islam” as a module or a course has been adequatelywoven and integrated into the university teaching and learning contexts. The organizers, Socrel chair Abby Day (Department of Sociology, Goldsmiths,University of London) and Sarah-Jane Page (School of Languages andSocial Sciences, Aston University), sought answers to the following questions:To what extent are higher education institutions responding to this relationship? How do Muslim students feel that Islam is represented in higher education?Does a Christianized curriculum still dominate the way these courses are designed? How do non-Muslim students respond to the content of courses thatmainly deal with Islam and Muslims? How do teachers respond to a more diversestudent body that hails from various socio-cultural backgrounds?Sociologists of religion have realized the importance of reflecting criticallyupon the study and teaching of religion. Publications such as Robert Orsi’s editedThe Cambridge Companion to Religious Studies (New York: CambridgeUniversity Press, 2012) has paid attention to these and related aspects. A qualitativeshift of scholary endeavors has been noted; scholars and researchershave now turned their lenses to specific religious traditions that have comeunder the spotlight because of their adherents’ apparent “violent” acts. Since9/11, Islam and Muslims have naturally become one of the targeted traditions(see “The Muslim World after 9/11,” Rand report at www.rand.org).This scholarly attention has resulted in the spread of Islamophobia in westernEurope and elsewhere, not to mention the gradual securitization of Muslimcommunities. This latter development seems to have enormous implicationsfor the academic arena where courses/modules on aspects of “Muslim extremism”in countries such as the United Kingdom have been closely watched and ...

The lessons planned in this essay were designed for a group of Year 7 students in an independent girls’ school in London. Their course of study for Classics in Year 7 was a general introduction, involving beginners’ Greek and the rudiments of Latin, but largely focused on learning about Greek mythology, Homeric epic and Roman culture. Wright's Greeks & Romans textbook was often used in class, but the content was chosen and materials designed by the class teacher. I began teaching this class just as they were finishing Greek mythology and beginning to study the Iliad and Odyssey. The sequence of four lessons, based around the Underworld was intended to provide a re-cap of the Homeric material after they had studied the two epics, as well as exploring in further detail episodes which I had skipped over for the sake of brevity in the previous sequence, such as the Odyssey's katabasis. It also looked forward to studying Roman material in the next module by introducing the Aeneid in translation.

ABC Learning Design (ABC LD) is a high-energy, hands-on curriculum development workshop from University College London (UCL). In just 90 minutes teaching teams work together to create a visual “storyboard”. The storyboard is made up of pre-printed cards representing the type and sequence of learning activities (both online and offline) required to meet the module or programme learning outcomes. All the resources have been released under Creative Commons licenses and are free to download, adapt and use.ABC LD is now popular across European tertiary education and beyond. Participants have found the workshop-based “sprint” approach to be quick, engaging and productive. The original UCL or “base” ABC LD is built around a collaborative and intensive 90’ workshop in which module teams work together to produce a paper-based storyboard describing the student journey.Over the last two years UCL has led an Erasmus+ project to develop and evaluate the ABC LD method with 12 partners (https://abc-ld.org). We have focused on localisation to institutional contexts and have explored the important link between storyboard designs and the Virtual Learning Environment. The main output is a freely downloadable Toolkit of resources and guides, enabling any college or university to adapt and adopt the method.Although developed to promote blended learning, during the COVID emergency, some institutions have now modified ABC LD to be facilitated remotely to support their need for a rapid transition to online learning. ABC LD is proving an effective method in this new format, too.

Abstract Introduction Culture is a concept most people instinctively understand, but may struggle to fully articulate. Culture is not limited to ethnicity and religion, but encompasses age, gender, sexual orientation, occupation, socioeconomic status, ethnic origin or migrant experience, religious or spiritual belief, and dis/ability. Given the breadth and complexity of culture, healthcare professionals in particular are challenged to interact with an increasingly multicultural world and various cultural groups. There is a growing need for appropriate training models to enhance cultural awareness, and cultural competence, including in pharmacy schools. “Interdisciplinary” can be defined as “relating to more than one branch of knowledge” [1], and international collaboration allows the connection of knowledge of different cultures. Developing a teaching intervention internationally, across three continents allows wider exposure to different cultures and can help students appreciate what culture may mean in different countries and how different ways of living are accepted and/or perceived in different societies. Aim To design and disseminate an online cultural communication module for use by pharmacy students across three countries and continents Methods A team from the Schools of Pharmacy at University College London (UCL), UK; Monash University, Australia and University of North Carolina (UNC), USA worked collaboratively to build an online module to help pharmacy students understand the importance of cultural awareness when communicating with patients. The Schools identified a range of cultural groups and scenarios in which pharmacist led communications could occur. Each School designed and filmed three scenarios, with two versions: one relatively good demonstration of communication and one poor. A range of actors, patients and pharmacists from different cultural groups (e.g. ethnic background, disability, LGBTQi, gender etc.) were involved in the design and filming. The module required students to reflect on the roleplays and provided feedback in the form of summary key points for each topic area. This module was embedded into the existing curricula for all Year 1 (Monash and UCL) and Year 2 (UNC) students in 2019. Students were informed as part of their regular course communication. A Likert style evaluation survey, including free text responses about the module was included, Questions were adapted from previous teaching evaluations. This data was recorded via each School’s Learning Management System. Descriptive statistics and a basic thematic analysis were conducted. Results Across the three Schools, a total of 525 students were offered the online module and 208 completed it. At UNC, 72.2% of students who completed would recommend the module to others, at UCL 83% and Monash 88%. Students’ feedback fell under three themes as seen in Table 1. Conclusion The innovation and strength of this learning intervention comes from the international collaboration. The online module allows students to identify and be culturally aware of a diverse group of people across three continents, allowing a unique and rich experience for all students through this collaboration and developing them not only as culturally competent healthcare professionals but also global citizens. The main objective of this research is to examine the effects of financial instruments declared under IFRSs on value relevance over thirteen years. The research sample included 35 European enterprises that were listed on the main market of the London Stock Exchange from 2007 to 2019. This study focuses on the adoption of IFRS.7 and IAS.32 disclosure standards, in line with previous studies. The Ohlson model (1995) was utilised in the study to evaluate the dependent variable since it is the module used most often in determining value relevance. The findings indicated that financial knowledge about financial instruments (FI) was typically valuable throughout the research. In addition, the significance of financial instruments and other disclosures when examining sub-components were not valued as relevant but rather provided information regarding the kind and level of exposure to FI risks. Furthermore, the earnings and book value of the common equity have a favourable impact on the value relevance. Hence, the key contributions of this study went beyond enriching the body of literature to make recommendations regarding the most influential determinant among financial instrument items that positively enhance value relevance.

The article reflects on the pedagogy of a first-year sociology and criminology module that was developed around the idea of ‘Researching the City’ in order to introduce students to the methodological and analytical processes of doing research in social science. Part of the assessment strategy centres around a weekly online diary which enables students to use positionality by way of reflecting on their experience of the city, of London, most specifically, due to the location of the university and the origin of the students. Expanding on Ash Amin’s idea of ‘prosaic sites of multiculturalism’, the article argues in favour of the transformative potential of a pedagogy that value experiential knowledge and is responsive to this form of knowledge in providing the theoretical and methodological tools to make sense of personal experiences in relation to structures and structural constraints. In this, the pedagogy works to develop a sociological imagination as a pedagogical route to empowering students in and out of the classroom in opposition to a neo-liberal ethos that instead values individualisation and competitiveness and is at present transforming higher education and society as a whole in the United Kingdom.
