The main function of mooring systems of floating offshore wind turbines is to ensure station keeping. The mooring lines can be composed of chains, wire ropes, synthetic ropes, or even a combination of them. In this thesis we focus on wire ropes, whose advantage over chain is to sustain high tension at a lower weight. Their design must consider the successive tension and bending loading induced by the floater movement for various wind and waves conditions. The thesis purpose is to develop a new numerical model, dedicated to the prediction of fatigue damage in mooring wire ropes of a floating wind turbine. In particular it has to simulate the relative movements between the wires when the rope is bent. Results from free-bending fatigue tests in the literature show the importance of these effects, since the first rupture is localized near the neutral plane, where fretting is more important. This phenomenon affecting the fatigue life is not considered by fatigue criteria of current offshore standards, which are related to tension-tension loading. It is worth noting that the use of a detailed model of wire rope in a fatigue design procedure represents a real challenge. The high number of contact interactions to be modeled, which are several thousands per meter of rope, and the large amount of loading cases make this type of computations extremely time-consuming.The loading used in the developed local model of wire rope is obtained from global computations performed with a dedicated multiphysics software (Deeplines). This software allows to simulate the environmental conditions (wind, waves, current) applied on the whole structural system. Some preliminary computations showed that the nonlinear bending behavior of the wire rope, linked to the wire contact interactions, does not significantly affect the output of the global model. This observation justifies the use of a top-down scheme, with a prior computation of the global scale. The global scale tension and curvature are then uniformly imposed on the central wire of the local model. The continuity of the rope is represented by periodic conditions which link the end sections to points within the model, at the same circumferential locations. The wires are modeled by beam elements. The outputs at the local scale are the stress resultants on the wires, and the contact forces and relative displacements at contact locations.Small sliding between the wires has been observed from first numerical analysis, for a representative loading case. Therefore, in order to reduce the computational cost of the wire rope model, a new node-to-node contact element has been developed, dedicated to the modeling of contact between non-parallel beams with circular cross section. It assumes fixed contact pairing and finite rotations. Numerical benchmarks and experimental tests on wire ropes show the improvement with results closer to a reference surface-to-surface model, when compared to standard algorithm for the simulation of contact between beams. Moreover, the new model reduces significantly the CPU cost and is also more robust, which is crucial for fatigue life estimates. The outputs of the local scale model are then used to obtain the complete 3D stress state by means of analytical solutions of contact between solids with cylindrical shape. Finally, a multiaxial fatigue criterion is applied in order to assess the safety of the system

This thesis is situated in the FUI OASIS project which the objective is the modeling of an optimized stamping process. The work mainly involves the development of the most appropriate contact algorithms such formatting. In the literature and several industrial computing codes, the NTS approach (node to segment) remains the most used for the resolution of a contact problem. In certain configuration, this method has shortcomings and a lack of precision. We replacing it with mortar approach, we manage to solve a broad range of contact problems. The mortar method, used for the initial for calculation using domain decomposition, was the focus of several research projects for the modeling of the contact. In this work, we will consolidate multiple contact formulation methods in combination with mortar approach. The resolution algorithm, the elements of implementation and some examples of validation with a review of the advantages and limitations of each technique are detailed in this work in order to get technical support for subsequent work with the mortar method. The main advantage of the mortar method is in the application of the contact conditions in integral form in the interface. Although this method reduces the difference of the stresses in the contact interface of a component to another to obtain a better continuity of the contact pressure, it is still insufficient in some applications, particularly for large deformation problems. The smoothing of contact surfaces, which can be applied by various techniques, presents a classic solution to this problem in mechanical contact. The originality of this work is the combination of using cubic B-Spline curves for the almost exact description of the contact surface on one side with the use of the mortar approach to the application of the contact conditions on the other hand. This combination forms a winning combination for solving a contact problem in large deformation. The terms allowing the implementation of the different smoothing techniques for solving a problem of contact are detailed. Particular attention is paid to smoothing with Cu bic B-Spline. All algorithms detailed in this work are implemented in a house code 'Fiesta'. This is a free finite elements computer code in C ++. Some developments in the law of hyper-elastic behavior and completeness of the contact module are developed in this thesis

With a view of improving the performance and efficiency of the future generation of turbojet engines, and in order to comply with evolving environmental regulations concerning the various pollutants emitted by these machines, aerospace manufacturers are looking for suitable technological solutions. Among all the avenues studied by the manufacturers, increasing the rotational speed of the low-pressure turbine within the turbojet engine is envisaged to increase overall efficiency, in return for the reinforcement of complex vibratory phenomena which need to be taken into account during the design phase. In fact, the low-pressure turbine used in the LEAP generation of jet engines has the particularity of being made up of an assembly of blades whose geometry incorporates a shroud at the upper end of them. All the shrouds interlock with each other when the blades are mounted on the disc, thereby applying a static pre-load to the blades, thanks to a pre-twist angle provided for at the design stage. The function of this shroud is twofold: on the one hand, it serves to guarantee the tightness of the airfoil by limiting the fluid losses of th airflow passing through the blades, and on the other hand, it introduces frictional damping through contact between each blade fixed on the disc, thus reducing their vibration amplitude. The aim of this thesis is to reproduce the non-linear dynamic behavior of a low-pressure turbine blade on a numerical model, and to validate the results obtained using an academic experimental test bench. To this end, a bibliographical study is carried out to establish the state of the art of existing experimental test benches, their specific features, the observations made, the equipment used, etc., in order to position the academic test bench designed as part of this thesis in relation to the literature, taking into account the desired specifications. Once the design and manufacture of the test bench have been completed, the preliminary tests required for its debugging are carried out, including modal analysis of the blades and torsion tests for the calibration of strain gauges to measure the static pre-load when the blades are assembled on the test bench. Forced responses over the frequency range of the structure’s first bending mode have been achieved using step sinus excitation for different static pre-load configurations. Similarly, building the numerical model and calculating non-linear frequency responses requires an understanding and handling of specific methodologies, particularly for dealing with the non-linear forces associated with the frictional contact between the blades shrouds. An additional problem, intrinsic to the construction of the finite element model reproducing the static pre-loading by blade pre-twisting, is the non-coincidence of the meshes of the contact interfaces, necessitating firstly to constrain them to make them sufficiently regular in order to preserve the construction of node-to-node contact elements. Secondly, a method for dealing with this problem is proposed, based on a short bibliography, and taking into account the various calculation methodologies, additional frequency responses are then calculated

This doctoral thesis is focused on the study of the process of machining by means of the numerical tool for calculation by Finite Element Method (FEM). Concretely, it is a question of studying the thermomechanical phenomena which take place, during an operation of material removal, at the interface and that control the type of contact between the tool and the chip. for that, a numerical model of orthogonal cutting under the ALE formulation (Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian) was developed with the code Abaqus/Explicit. Several parametric studies were carried out to uncouple the effects of the local variables, on the macroscopic results (forces...), as in the interface (temperature...). The numerical results show that in fact the combined effects of the type of the implemented friction model at the interface, both with the thermal softening of the material, condition the appearence of the sticking contact, and consequently, govern the tool/chip contact type. Two new models of variable friction with to velocity are proposed, to improve the definition of friction in the interface. Finally, the validity of the numerical model is checked by observing a good correlation between the obtained numerical forces, and the experimental cutting forces obtained for same material and under the same cutting conditions

Many problems encountered in industry are concerned with interface evolutions, where contact, friction and adhesion are fundamental topics. This PhD thesis contributes to the development of a model involving adhesion and friction and allowing the healing of the adhesive bonds when the bodies are again pushed closer together after their separation. This model is called model of healing adhesion. In this work the applications concern specifically the contact glass/rubber. The formation of the the adhesion neck, jump-on and jump-off phenomena and the formation and the propagation of the Schallamach waves are investigated. A modelling of the adhesive contact is thus proposed, based on thermodynamic considerations and surface interactions concepts. In addition to the possible healing of the adhesives bonds, the originality of the model is that healing process and damage process are both related to the rate of the solicitation at the interface. According to the applications, the approch allows to consider two potential sources of dissipation. One is called surface dissipation and linked to the behaviour of the interface. The second is called bulk dissipation and linked to the behaviour of the bodies. The dynamic formulation is done within the framework of the non-smooth mechanic. Implementations of appropriate numerical methods and simulations are done in LMGC90 (Montpellier - Marseille). The model is tested with Benchmark and validated with the simulation of a glass/rubber experiment

The applications of the nonsmooth multibody systems field cover several fields including aeronautics, automotive, robotics, railway, virtual reality and watch industry to cite a few. These industrial applications have ever more stringent requirements on both accuracy and speed of the numerical methods used for the computation of the dynamics. As a consequence, the research in the nonsmooth mechanics domain is very active, to provide better integration methods for the resolution of the equations of motions and to develop better models for the contact problems with and without friction. Since the nonsmooth mechanics framework allows for jumps in the velocity and in the acceleration of the mechanical systems, the resulting algorithms have to handle such non-smoothness. In this PhD, several numerical schemes for the resolution of index-3, index-2 and index-1 DAEs are compared on industrial benchmarks with bilateral and unilateral constraints. The aim is to improve the efficiency of the Ansys Rigid Body solver which is based on an event-driven integration strategy. Points of comparison include the enforcement of the bilateral constraints, time efficiency and handling the stiff dynamics. This study also aimed at having a clear idea on the choice of the most suitable integration method for a given mechanical system knowing its characteristics (number of contacts, presence of bilateral constraints, stiff dynamics...). The second part discusses several issues that frequently occur in the simulation of multibody systems, namely, the problem of accumulation of impacts, the resolution of friction and handling the jumps resulting from the presence of some geometrical singularities. Dealing with such issues is very difficult, especially in the framework of event-driven schemes. In order to handle these problems, a mixed event-driven/time-stepping scheme is developed which takes advantage of both integration families (event-driven and time-stepping). Several examples are used to validate our methodology

The model takes into account the real geometry, the complex material structure, the various materials and their properties as well as the interactions between the tire and the ground (contact, friction and thermal-mechanical coupling due to friction). Tests are performed in order to identify geometrical and material parameters.Static and dynamic simulations using a Lagragian approach and an Eulerian/ Lagrangian mixed approach were performed on this proposed model. This second approach which significantly reduces the computational cost time was validated for cornering tire simulation. The model allows thereby to estimate the forces in the tire/ ground contact patch. We show the influency of loading parameters (vertical load, inflating pressure and rolling velocity) and of the slip angle on the self aligning torque (MZ) and on the lateral friction coefficient (µY) corresponding on the ratio between lateral force and vertical load due to the aircraft weight. We also present a sensitivity study on geometrical and material parameters.Coulomb's and thermal diffusion tests were performed in order to identify the friction coefficient law as function of temperature (on concrete and asphalte surfaces) and the temperature evolution in the aircraft tire thickness. These tests allowed to take into account thermal effects in the model and to propose a thermal-mechanical coupling model which emphasized the decreasing of µY and the rapid vanishing of MZ towards zero beyond a critical slip angle βmax varying with the tire loading conditions. These variations were observed experimentally

Existence results (and uniqueness results for Tresca law) for associated variational problems are classical. Nevertheless, they are not valid anymore in the frame of aour study, for we have regularized a term in the inequations. We first present the physical background and the mathematical tools related to the problems. We then settle a constructive method for the analysis of variational inequalities involving a regularized convex term. Thus, we obtain existence and uniqueness results, asymptotic convergence results and approximation result concerning theoretical numerical analysis. Then we apply those results to bilateral contact problems involving Tresca or Coulomb friction law. Finally, we present numerical results, in which we compare two ways to compute time discretization and we study the influence of different parameters on the calculus of solutions

The tribology of the dry contacts subjected to relative displacements of low amplitude and the friction materials are themes which are regularly treated in the literature. However, the studies referring simultaneously of both are very rare. The purpose of this manuscript is to improve comprehension of the physical phenomena and the tribological behavior inherent to the dry contacts “shaft / bearing with thrust” subjected to a thermo-vibratory environment. The industrial mechanism on the origin of this study was analyzed in order to identify its principle and these operating conditions. A diagnosis on its losses of functionalities, the link between its disfonctionnements and the studied contact, and a morphological expertise of its guidance elements were performed. A new experimental test rig was designed and realized in order to reproduce the real contact conditions of the studied guidance elements (concept of “tribological triplet”). Its various elements and the steps followed to validate its functionalities are exposed. Thanks it, for the various studied material couples, significant experimental results on their wear (and its physical phenomena) and their capacity of velocity accommodation are obtained. The contribution of a 3D numerical model integrating a misalignment for a cylinder in cylinder contact was detailed and analyzed. A scientific synthesis discussing the influence of the size of graphites grains, the nature and the orientation of composites, but also the origin of the identified physical phenomena (the migration of the impregnated elements, the presence of rectangular forms in the contact zones) is carried out

The contact between two or more bodies occurs in numbers of everyday situations and has been intensively investigated in mechanics from either theoretical or numerical points of view. The solution of the contact problem is complex since the contact laws governing the interface response are nonlinear and non-smooth. In the frame of finite deformations, the nonlinearities become more pronounced, the analytical solutions hardly within the reach and more than often one has to resort to the numerical solution. In the present work, a new weak formulation is proposed in order to deal with the static or dynamic contact problem with Coulomb friction in finite deformations. The proposed weak form is inspired from Curnier et al's works and is expressed as a mixt weighted residual relationship generalizing the well-known virtual work principle. It is mixte since it involves both the displacements defined in the domain of the bodies and the so-called multipliers defined over the contact surface. The weak form is shown to be equivalent to the whole set of the local equations of the strong contact problem. Most importantly, this means that the weak form equality encompasses the contact inequalities. On the numerical level, the spatial discretization using the finite element method can be carried out easily since one has to handle a mere equality without any inequality. The time discrezitation is not an objective of this work, we rather make use of the two existing time-stepping schemes – the Newmark and the Moreau ones – and show how to incorporate them into the weak form to directly obtain the discrete system for the dynamic contact problem. Several numerical examples are solved in order to assess the validity of the proposed approach

These phenomena may involve sophisticated mathematical models represented by systems of partial differential equations with boundary conditions describing complex contact processes (with or without friction). However, the mathematical theory of contact problems is a broad field of study where many issues remain to be investigated. The field studies of this thesis concerns, the development of new models of contact and friction as well as the mathematical analysis and numerical solution of the problems considered. In this work, our goal is to make a contribution to this mathematical theory of contact problems. In other words, the purpose of our thesis is to study theoretically and numerically some problems of contact between a deformable body and a rigid foundation using several original constitutive and contact laws with and without friction

A lot of mechanical assemblies are subjected to vibratory solicitations. This type of solicitations can caused small amplitude displacements between the elements in dry contact (fretting). The micro-sliding between the surfaces cause degradations, which can strongly deteriorate the reliability of the structures. The study presented in this thesis has to objective to ameliorate the understanding of the tribological phenomenon in a shaft / bearing contact with thrust submitted at fretting solicitations at high temperature. The contact is dry, there is no fluid lubricant consequently the materials of the contact accommodate the displacements between the surfaces. In this goal, the bearings are made of amorphous carbon or graphite. The shafts are made in stainless steel and titanium alloy. In order to ameliorate the tribological behaviour of the bearings different impregnations of the amorphous carbon and graphite with metals and polymer have been tested. The tribological behaviours of impregnations are very different with the high temperature and the observations have showed that the impregnations are more efficient with a graphite structure. Nitriding treatments assisted by plasma, of the stainless steel and of the titanium alloy have been tested to ameliorate the tribological properties of the shafts. Nitriding treatment is very efficient with the titanium alloy with an increase of the wear resistance and of the adhesion. With the stainless steel the results are less sensible because of an increase of the surface roughness during the nitriding treatment which causes an increase of the abrasion of the bearing materials

The modelling of problems of contact leads to serious difficulties: conceptual, mathematical and data processing difficulties much more complex than those coming from the linear structural mechanics. Motivated by the fundamental role that the contact plays in applications of computational mechanics, we are interested in problems of unilateral contact and friction (static and dynamic) in small deformations. This thesis is devoted to the study of certain formulations and methods to solve this problem and breaks up into two great parts. The first one is devoted to the presentation of the hybrid discretization of unilateral contact problem with Coulomb friction. A formulation with a projection is developed and an existence and uniqueness result is given for the discrete problem. Different methods of solution are presented (Newton, iterative method, fixed points, Uzawa) and are compared in terms of number of iteration and robustness with respect to the coefficient of friction. The second part relates to the elastodynamic contact problem. Several algorithms (θ-method, Newmark, midpoint) are presented. New strategies are considered (Paoli and Schatzman scheme, scheme with an equivalent contact condition, scheme with equivalent mass matrix) to overcome the difficulties met with the previous schemes. The last method allows us to have energy conserving problem and to prove an existence result of a Lipschitz continuous solution for the discrete elastodynamic contact problem. These results are validated by numerical results

This work is the result of collaboration between CEA and IRCCyN in the area of teleoperation and cobotics, where robots work at low velocity and with high external forces variations. In this range of use, the joint dry friction force becomes significant compared with the inertial forces. The dynamic model with the usual constant dry sliding friction force model is no longer accurate enough to predict the joint forces and therefore to predict the interaction forces between the robot and its material or human environment. This thesis proposes an original dry friction model, which depends on the joint load and velocity. This model is merged into the multi-joint inverse dynamic model, which is identified with linear least squares techniques. An experimental study of several one-joint robots leads to propose a new dry friction model that combines the load-dependence of the Coulomb model and the velocity-dependence of the Stribeck model, and that is suitable for the 4 quadrants in the (velocity, load) frame. This model is incorporated into the multi-joint inverse dynamic model that remains linear in relation to the new dynamic parameters. The usual robotics identification method, based on linear least squares techniques, is divided in two steps for the new model: at first, a joint-by-joint procedure allows to identify some friction parameters, and then a multi-joint identification is carried out to estimate the other friction and inertial parameters. An experimental validation on seven one-joint cases and on a multi-joint case (4 joints of the Stäubli TX40 robot) proves the relevance of this original approach for robots working with high load variations and/or at low velocity

In the view of robotics or granular media mechanics, we question the statement of the dynamical evolution problem for multibody systems with contacts and friction. The usual approach is event driven and does not allow to state an evolution problem in a systematic way. This matter of fact gave rise to a new approach in the frictionless case we generalize to the case with friction. Sticking to the point of view of Lagrange on the equation of the dynamics, we emphasize the systematic use of virtual powers and duality. This bias suggests to put emphasis on generalized reaction forces in the statement of the evolution problem and not on local reaction forces of the real world, as it is usual in practice. This point of view allows to escape from pathologies known as Painlevé paradox
