AbstractExtending the three now well-known modes of immigrant labor market incorporation formulated by sociologist Alejandro Portes in 1981, this article proposes that transnationalism can be viewed as a new mode of immigrant labor market incorporation in the age of globalization. The article conceptualizes this new mode of immigrant incorporation and illustrates it with data from unstructured interviews of Chinese transnational migrants in the US and in China. It is found that the transnational mode of incorporation often offers Chinese transnational migrants business and career opportunities and rewards not available in other modes of incorporation, although it sometimes involves risks, uncertainties, and difficulties. Chinese transmigrants with a higher initial social standing, an advanced training, and a dense network are more likely to experience upward social mobility than those without such advantages. Implications of the arguments and findings are also discussed.

Centriole stability and distribution during the mammalian cell cycle was studied by microinjecting biotinylated tubulin into early G1 cells and analyzing the pattern of incorporation into centrioles. Cells were extracted and cold treated to depolymerize labile microtubules, allowing the fluorescent microscopic visualization of the stable centrioles. The ability to detect single centrioles was confirmed by use of correlative electron microscopy. Indirect hapten and immunofluorescent labeling of biotinylated and total tubulin permitted us to distinguish newly formed from preexisting centrioles. Daughter centrioles incorporated biotinylated tubulin, and at mitosis each cell received a centrosome containing one new and one old centriole. We conclude that in each cell cycle tubulin incorporation into centrioles is conservative, and centriole distribution is semiconservative.

Based on a review of existing qualitative research, this study proposes a gender-based interpretation and critique of the incorporation of self-spirituality into mainstream organizations. The article’s findings show that the enactment of self-spirituality in organizations often evokes experiences of tension or objection. The basic premises of self-spirituality culture are concerned with the authentic self and the emphasis on the individual’s awareness of his or her body, thoughts, and feelings is, in fact, a manifesto of the legitimate sources of ‘knowing’ at work. This premise is radically different from rationality as a fundamental principle of knowing and organizing. Self-spirituality further proposes an alternative to workplace relationships, which is based on a radical equality. I argue that these perceptions are embodied in gendered power relations—the relationship between the feminine self-spirituality and the masculine secular organizations. Two main modes of incorporation of self-spirituality into organizations were identified: the ‘domesticated masculine mode of incorporation’, which is presented as a ‘joining force’ in achieving main organizational values, and the ‘feminine’ modes of the incorporation of self-spirituality, which presents a revolutionary alternative to organizations. As for the viability of these modes of incorporation for creating change, self-spirituality in its domesticated masculine mode of incorporation appears to align itself with organizations public domain. In contrast to this, the two ‘feminine’ modes of incorporation create the possibility for self-spirituality to be lived by individuals as an ‘individual wisdom’. The study contributes to organization research by identifying ways in which radical alternatives may be incorporated into organizations.

The incorporation of collaborative filtering recommendation algorithms into blended teaching approaches for college English marks a big step forward in language education. This study investigates the theoretical underpinnings, practical ramifications, and pedagogical issues for adding collaborative filtering algorithms into blended learning environments. Collaborative filtering algorithms produce individualized learning resource recommendations based on user interactions and preferences, increasing student engagement and motivation. However, issues like as data privacy, algorithmic biases, and user approval must be addressed to ensure that collaborative filtering is implemented effectively in the classroom. This study explains the potential of collaborative filtering recommendation algorithms to improve language learning results in college English courses by doing a thorough literature review. It also provides ideas for educators and policymakers on how to handle the complexity of incorporating collaborative filtering recommendation algorithms into blended learning models. Finally, this paper adds to the promotion of novel pedagogical approaches and the improvement of language learning experiences among college students. As a result, the enhanced collaborative filtering recommendation system had a slightly greater recall rate and precision than the pre-optimized method.

This article analyzes sociocultural transnational linkages among Colombian, Dominican, and Salvadoran immigrants in the United States. It emphasizes the importance of comparative analysis and yields three main findings. First, participation in any particular transnational activity is low, but participation over all the different forms of transnational practices is extended. Second, the process of incorporation does not weaken transnational participation. Third, there is more than one causal path that can account for the rise of transnational sociocultural practices. The different paths can be explained by reference to the context of reception and the mode of incorporation of each group.

Mode choice models have been used widely to forecast the relative probabilities of using available travel modes. These depend on mode-related and traveler-related characteristics. On the other hand, smartphones are increasingly being used to collect sensors’ data relating to trips made after selection of a suitable mode. Such sensors’ data may be correlated with decision-making process of travelers regarding travel mode selection. Discrete Choice Modelling is used to simulate this decision-making process by computing utilities of various travel alternatives, and then calculating their respective probabilities of being selected. In this paper, multinomial logit (MNL) mode choice model is utilized to enhance the prediction capacity of supervised learning algorithm i.e. Weighted Random Forest. To make the procedure less energy-intensive, GPS data was used only to locate the origin and destination of any trip, to be incorporated in mode choice model. Afterwards only accelerometer data was utilized in feature selection for the learning algorithm. One tenth of the classified data was used to train the algorithm whereas rest was used to test it. Results suggested that with incorporation of MNL, the overall prediction accuracy of learning algorithm was increased from 93.75% to 99.08%.

ABSTRACT Although DNA polymerase η (Polη) and other Y family polymerases differ in sequence and function from classical DNA polymerases, they all share a similar right-handed architecture with the palm, fingers, and thumb domains. Here, we examine the role in Saccharomyces cerevisiae Polη of three conserved residues, tyrosine 64, arginine 67, and lysine 279, which come into close contact with the triphosphate moiety of the incoming nucleotide, in nucleotide incorporation. We find that mutational alteration of these residues reduces the efficiency of correct nucleotide incorporation very considerably. The high degree of conservation of these residues among the various Y family DNA polymerases suggests that these residues are also crucial for nucleotide incorporation in the other members of the family. Furthermore, we note that tyrosine 64 and arginine 67 are functionally equivalent to the deoxynucleotide triphosphate binding residues arginine 518 and histidine 506 in T7 DNA polymerase, respectively.

Incorporating more renewables into our energy mix is a major challenge that confronts our transition to a carbon free economy. Solid oxide electrochemical cells when operated alternately in fuel cell and electrolysis modes, enable the incorporation and integration of far greater amounts of solar and wind energy into our power grid. As islanded systems, they can also function as distributed generation systems thereby decreasing our reliance on the power grid. In this talk, we present a recent survey of results on rSOCs based on rare earth nickelate – rare-earth doped ceria composite oxygen electrodes that exhibit excellent cycling behavior when operated alternately in solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) and solid oxide electrochemical cell (SOEC) modes of operation. The degradation in such cells is significantly mitigated by mode-switching operation when compared to operating in single mode operation in electrolysis mode. By comparing distributed relaxation times (DRT) analysis of impedance spectra obtained from single-mode (electrolysis) operated cells, and cells operated in switched-modes, we obtain clues into cell degradation mechanisms.

ABSTRACT Certain penicillin binding protein mutants of Escherichia coli grow with spirillum-like morphologies when the FtsZ protein is inhibited, suggesting that FtsZ might govern aspects of cell wall growth other than those strictly associated with septation. While investigating the mechanism of spiral cell formation, we discovered conditions for visualizing this second function of FtsZ. Normally, inhibiting the cytoskeleton protein MreB forces E. coli cells to grow as smoothly enlarging spheres from which the poles disappear, yielding coccoid or lemon-shaped forms. However, when FtsZ and MreB were inhibited simultaneously in a strain lacking PBP 5 and PBP 7, the resulting cells ballooned outward but retained conspicuous rod-shaped extensions at sites representing the original poles. This visual phenotype was paralleled by the biochemistry of sacculus growth. Muropeptides are usually inserted homogeneously into the lateral cell walls, but when FtsZ polymerization was inhibited, the incorporation of new material occurred mainly in the central regions of cells and was significantly lower in those portions of side walls abutting a pole. Thus, reduced precursor incorporation into side walls near the poles explained why these regions retained their rod-like morphology while the rest of the cell grew spherically. Also, inhibiting FtsZ increased the amount of pentapeptides in sacculi by about one-third. Finally, the MreB protein directed the helical or diagonal incorporation of new peptidoglycan into the wall, but the location of that incorporation depended on whether FtsZ was active. In sum, the results indicate that in addition to nucleating cell septation in E. coli, FtsZ can direct the insertion of new peptidoglycan into portions of the lateral wall.

We present the linear stability analysis for the epitaxial thin film growth on the vicinal surface of strained Si and the growth mode diagrams of the epitaxial growth under various operation conditions. Competition between step-step elastic interactions and the asymmetry of incorporation of adatoms from the terraces to step edge is considered. Force monopoles at steps and their interaction lead to it on the vicinal surface while kinetic asymmetry of the adatom incorporation at steps due to Ehrlich-Schwoebel barrier prevents the step bunching instability. Growth mode on the vicinal surface is determined by the competition between elastic step-step interactions and Ehrlich-Schwoebel barrier.

Background carbon (C) impurity incorporation in metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) grown gallium nitride (GaN) represents one of the major issues in further improving GaN vertical power device performance. This work presents a laser-assisted MOCVD (LA-MOCVD) technique to address the high-C issue in MOCVD homoepitaxial GaN under different growth rate (Rg) regimes and studies the correlations between [C] and Rg. [C] in LA-MOCVD GaN is reduced by 50%–90% as compared to the conventional MOCVD GaN for a wide growth rate range between 1 and 16 μm/h. A mass-transport based model is developed to understand the C incorporation at different Rg regimes. The results obtained from the developed model are in good agreement with experimental data. The model further reveals that LA-MOCVD effectively suppresses C incorporation by reducing the active C species in the gas phase. Moreover, high step velocity in step flow growth mode can facilitate C incorporation at fast Rg, exhibiting steeper C increase. The theoretical model indicates that [C] can be suppressed below 1016 cm−3 with a fast growth rate (Rg) of 10 μm/h by utilizing higher power LA-MOCVD and freestanding GaN substrates with larger off-cut angles.

Cell surface appendages like fimbriae/pili, fibers, or flagella were detectable by fluorescence staining only in a very few cases although their presence was proven by electron microscopy. Our data in addition prove that Alexa Fluor dyes can be used forin situanalyses at temperatures up to 100°C.

The paper presents a practical method for incorporation of travel time reliability in a regional travel model. The discussion includes five consecutive steps. First it describes how the vehicle speed dataset for the metropolitan area of Phoenix, AZ, termed HERE, was processed and link-level volume–delay–reliability functions were estimated, and then how link-level reliability measures can be applied for network path building. The third step describes how trip origin–destination (OD) reliability measures can be constructed out of the link-level reliability measures. The fourth step involves implementation of the link-level and OD-level reliability measures in highway assignment, mode choice, and other travel models. The fifth step includes model validation and sensitivity tests. The paper addresses several long-standing issues associated with incorporation of travel time reliability in operational travel models in practice. These issues include construction of OD reliability measures with the recognition that the core link-level reliability measures such as standard deviation or variance are not additive in a general case, accounting for a partial correlation between travel time distributions for different links, and incorporation of travel time reliability in a standard static assignment.

Nanocrystallites (15–25 nm) of Mn doped ZnO prepared by refluxing their acetate precursors in the presence of diethylene glycol, self-assemble into polydisperse spheres of broad size distributation (100–400 nm). The center of X-ray diffraction peaks shifts towards lower angle and the line gets broadened on increasing Mn concentration. Compared to the vibration modes of wurtzite ZnO, one additional vibration mode is observed in the range of 522–518 cm−1 in Raman spectra of Mn doped ZnO whose intensity increases on increasing the Mn concentration. The origin of this peak could be related to the incorporation of Mn2+ in Zn2+ lattice site. Further, on increasing Mn concentration, infrared band red shifted and surface phonon mode absorption get pronounced due to the incorporation of Mn2+ in Zn2+ lattice site resulting changes in the local structure parameters (effective mass, force constant, bond length).

The mode of incorporation of 2H from [3,3-2H2]cadaverine into lupanine (2) and 13α-hydroxylupanine (3) in Lupinusangustifolius was determined by 2H nmr spectroscopy. Lupanine carried deuterium at positions 4α, 4β, 8α, 8β, 13α, and 13β. These six sites were approximately equally enriched. Similarly, 13α-hydroxylupanine carried label approximately equally at five sites, 4α, 4β, 8α, 8β, and 13β. [3,3-2H2]Cadaverine was prepared by borodeuteride reduction in D2O of the p-toluene-sulfonylhydrazone of N-benzoylpiperid-4-one, followed by degradation of the resulting N-benzoyl[4,4-2H2]piperidine into 1,5-dibromo[3,3-2H2]pentane, conversion into 1,5-diphthalimido[3,3-2H2]pentane, and acid hydrolysis.

A detailed assessment of the hydraulic power output of the Stockert roller pump was performed with the pump operating in its 'pulsatile' mode. Pressure and flow waveforms and the pulsatile power generated in a model of the human vascular bed were dependant upon the pump output, the pump control settings and the diameters of the arterial line, the pump insert and aortic cannula. The pulsatile power output was lower when a silicone rubber pump insert was used rather than a polyvinyl chloride insert. The incorporation of a Cobe CML flat-sheet membrane oxygenator into the arterial line reduced the pulsatile power to levels similar to those obtained with the pump operating in its 'continuous' mode. Incorporating a Sarns hollow fibre membrane oxygenator or a Pall extracorporeal blood filter had less effect and variations in perfusate viscosity or the length of the arterial line did not appear to have any effect. It seems probable that the experimental and clinical effects of 'pulsatile' flow during cardiopulmonary bypass with this pump will be highly dependant upon the operating conditions.

Nowadays, laminated composites are widely used in the aerospace sector. All laminates have interply/interlaminar interfaces even if they are made using automated processes. The interfaces act as the areas of weaknesses and the potential crack initiation regions. Hence, any enhancement in the crack initiation and propagation resistance is always sought after. Usage of polymeric thin films is one of the promising and viable ways to achieve this. It is also easy to incorporate micro-thin films into any automation process. In the present study, different customized thin films that are compatible with Glass/BMI composites are fabricated. Fracture toughness tests in Mode I (opening mode), Mode II (sliding mode) and Mixed Mode I/II are conducted respectively using Double Cantilever Beam (DCB), End Notch Flexure (ENF) and Mixed Mode Bending (MMB) test specimens. This paper discusses the manufacturing of compatible micro-thin films. The various challenges faced during the manufacturing and incorporation of thin films are presented. The results of the various fracture toughness tests are examined. Mechanisms through which the different films help in resisting the crack initiation and propagation are deliberated and discussed. The incorporation of this technique in Automated Fiber Placement (AFP) is also discussed.

The replication of bacteriophage T7 DNA in vivo proceeds via the synthesis of complex concatemeric intermediates which are joined via the 160 base pair terminal redundancies at either end of the phage chromosome. To gain some insight into the mode of generation of these structures, we have examined the role of DNA synthesis in the formation of concatemeric bacteriophage T7 DNA in vitro. Incubation of mature T7 DNA with T7-infected cell extracts and a deoxynucleoside [32P]triphosphate resulted in the incorporation of significant radioactivity into the DNA. Highest levels of incorporation were at the termini of the DNA and decreased toward the middle of the molecule. Incorporation was dependent upon the presence of the activity of the gene 6 exonuclease and correlated with the generation of concatemeric DNA. A model explaining the role of exonucleolytic degradation and DNA synthesis in the generation of concatemeric DNA is presented.

The mode of incorporation into lupinine of cadaverine, intramolecularly doubly labelled with,15N and with,13C at the C-atom adjacent to 15N, i.e., 13C, 15N-"bond-labelled", was determined by,13C nmr spectroscopy; lupinine is generated from two cadaverine-derived C5-units by a route which excludes a "dimeric" intermediate with C2v symmetry. The mode of incorporation of 2H from L-(2-2H)lysine, from (R)- and (S)-(1-2H)cadaverine, and from (2-2H)-Δ1-piperideine into lupinine was determined by 2H nmr spectroscopy. The results corroborate the conclusions from the 13C,15N experiment and they establish the stereochemistry of six of the steps in the biosynthetic conversion of L-lysine into lupinine.

This paper is concerned with assessing the correctness of applying various mathematical models for the calculation of the hydroshock phenomena in technical devices for modes close to critical parameters of the fluid. We study the applicability limits of the equation of state for an incompressible fluid (the assumption of constancy of the medium density) to the simulation of processes of the safety valve operation for high values of pressures in the valve. We present a scheme for adapting the numerical method of S. K. Godunov for calculation of flows of incompressible fluids. A generalization of the method for the Mie – Grüneisen equation of state is made using an algorithm of local approximation. A detailed validation and verification of the developed numerical method is provided, and relevant schemes and algorithms are given. Modeling of the hydroshock phenomenon under the valve actuation within the incompressible fluid model is carried out by the openFoam software. Abstract This study explores the primary effects of dielectric materials in a resonant cavity-based search for axion dark matter. While dielectrics prove beneficial in numerous cases, their incorporation may lead to less-than-optimal performance, especially for the lowest TM mode. Additionally, the stronger confinement of the electric field inside the dielectrics can exacerbate mode mixings, in particular for higher-order modes. Case studies have been carried out using a combination of analytical solutions and numerical simulations. The findings indicate dielectric cavities employing the TM010 mode experience a significant reduction in sensitivity when compared to a similar search conducted in a cavity at equivalent frequency using no dielectrics.

The paper presents a new current mode biquadratic filter with one input and three outputs using differential voltage current conveyor (DVCC) and four passive components. The proposed circuit can simultaneously realize low-pass, band-pass, and high-pass filter functions without changing the circuit topology and passive elements. The circuit exhibits a good frequency performance and low-sensitivity figures. PSPICE simulation using 0.5 μm CMOS parameters are given to validate the proposed circuit. The circuit provides a simple yet novel solution to the current-mode filtering after appropriate incorporation of current sensing elements in form of current buffers.

Solid oxide electrochemical cells operated reversibly in fuel cell and electrolysis modes (rSOCs), can enable the incorporation and integration of far greater amounts of solar and wind energy into our power grid. When deployed as islanded systems, they can also function as distributed generation systems thereby decreasing our reliance on the power grid. In this talk, we present results on rSOCs based on rare earth nickelate – rare-earth doped ceria composite oxygen electrodes that exhibit excellent reversible behavior when switched cyclically between solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) and solid oxide electrochemical cell (SOEC) modes of operation. The cyclic mode-switching operation mitigates against cell degradation when compared to operating in single mode operation in electrolysis mode. Further, we have used distribution of relaxation times (DRT) analysis of impedance spectra obtained from single-mode (electrolysis) operated cells, and cells operated in switched-modes, to obtain clues into cell degradation mechanisms.

Abstract In this study, ingot metallurgy and powder metallurgy processes were used to incorporate 0.2 and 0.7 vol% of nano-size ZrO2 particles reinforcement to develop magnesium nanocomposite. Both of the processing methods led to reasonably fair reinforcement distribution, substantial grain refinement and minimum porosity in the nanocomposites. Strengthening effect of nano-ZrO2 reinforcement in the magnesium matrix was greater when incorporated using the ingot metallurgy process. The matrix ductility and resistance to fracture were significantly improved due to the presence of nano-ZrO2 reinforcement when incorporated using the powder metallurgy process. Tensile fracture surfaces revealed that the less-ductile cleavage fracture mechanism of hexagonal close packed magnesium matrix has changed to more ductile mode due to the presence of nano-ZrO2 particles in all the processed nanocomposites.
