Yet a country with enormous potentialities for the development of pastoralism, the Central African Republic has been confronted for more than a decade by a prolonged crisis situation accentuated by a serious security and humanitarian crisis in 2013. This crisis has greatly affected the agricultural sector. pastoral farming remains one of the most important components. Today, as in the past, pastoralists are organizing themselves to cope with these shocks and mobility has for a very long time been the main strategy of response. However, because of the scale of the recent crises and their consequences, this crucial question always comes back to us: is pastoral mobility the key to adapting and maintaining pastoralism in CAR?This thesis, which is based on two case studies focusing on qualitative data, proposes to answer this central question by studying pastoral livestock farming systems, particularly the adaptation strategies of pastoralist households in a context of pastoral mobility and countries in post-conflict situations. The research was carried out in two pastoral camps located in the sub-prefecture of Birao (Terfel) and that of Bambari (Bangui-Banda). It shows that mobility is far from being over and that it is coming back with force as the main strategy in the situation of great security crisis such as that experienced by the CAR in 2013. It also results from this thesis that a better Understanding pastoral systems involves mobilizing local issues

The current dynamics within the pastoral areas in arid environments, such as the drastic decrease in terms of quality and quantity of pastoral resources, the advance of agricultural and urban fronts, and the implementation of pastoral laws aimed at securing pastoralism, have the consequence of questioning the systems of relations and agreements on which the social capital, mobilized by herders to access the pastoral and complementary resources necessary to maintain their herds, is based. The main challenge of our thesis is to understand how herders adapt their social capital to these transformations to secure their ability to access resources and preserve their herds in a context that tends to increase their vulnerability. While the approach of social capital as a determining factor in access to resources within pastoral societies is not a new subject of study, it continues to raise numerous theoretical and methodological questions in the human sciences. Based on a study of camel breeders in the province of Tan-Tan in southwest Morocco, our thesis proposes building a multidisciplinary analytical framework mobilizing geography (social, political, historical), socio-anthropology, and socio-economy. The aim is to develop a new approach to social capital that doesn't aim to measure a global stock of social capital, but rather to focus on the processes by which herders build, maintain, and develop it through the notion of social investment strategies developed by the sociologist Pierre Bourdieu. The first chapter of results focuses on the evolution of tribal and state actor relations since the colonial period and their consequences on the social networks from which the herders construct and maintain their social investment strategies. The second chapter of results presents the method we have developed to establish a typology of herder profiles according to these different social strategies in interaction with the other forms of assets they o wn. The study of the adaptive capacities of different herder profiles during the drought and the health crisis linked to the COVID-19 pandemic that affected the province of Tan-Tan during our study period allows us to demonstrate that the herders who were best able to access pastoral and complementary resources are those who adapted to political and social changes by developing social investment strategies that straddle the customary and state networks or by relying on financial capital and significant social prestige. Between research and development, this thesis is an invitation to place at the heart of the analysis of the resilience of pastoral populations the study of the social investment strategies implemented by herders insofar as they constitute a determining factor in their capacity to access the resources necessary to maintain their herds and consequently their capacity to adapt to the changes that characterize pastoral areas in arid environments. It also emphasizes the ne ed for pastoral development projects and policies to take greater account of the multiple territories and sets of stakeholders within which pastoral areas are located and from which herders develop their social strategies for accessing resources. It is only by taking this into account and highlighting the existing disparities in terms of capacity to access resources within the pastoral community concerned that pastoral development will be able to benefit the majority of herders and not just those with “good” networks

This thesis sets out to establish how extensive pastoral systems have changed and investigated the role of the key legislative and policy influences on these changes. It examined the current key drivers of pastoral mobility and analysed the different movement patterns and their spatial extent within a spatially constrained environment. This thesis also investigated the role of vegetation type and condition in the distribution of grazing pressure and further discussed the implications of using variable stocking rates in a spatially constrained pastoral system.

The present thesis aimed at analyzing and answering, in the theological sphere, how the Catholic Church exercises its evangelizing mission in favor of migrants. Migration processes can be experiences of Christian living because in the midst of mishaps, success and failure, may make human s encounter with God possible, in Jesus Christ, in the concrete reality in which the being is found. This way, the Catholic Church, in its pastoral action in favor of migrants, must be characterized by gratuity, receptivity, mercy, justice and love, boosting what is the best in human beings. In order to capture appropriately the material object, i.e., the reality of migration, the survey opted for sampling, focusing its attention to the Brazilian migration executed to a particular area - Boston- Massachusetts- the USA. Throughout fieldwork, with qualitative profile, and bibliographic study of the major works that deal with the matter, tried to understand what occurs with this specific reality of migration. As it is a theological thesis, the formal objective was gathered at the nucleus of Christian experience, i.e., at the encounter with Jesus Christ and adhesion to an ecclesial community and its consequences. Gathering both objects of research we realized the importance of the relationship between faith and culture, seeking to evaluate to what extent the immersion in a new culture, in this case North American, implies in faith loss or change. The migration process analyzed through Christian faith perspective leads to overcoming the rigid and strict structures posed as barriers that limit the freedom and the purpose of human existence in a diverse world. Therefore, instead of building walls, bridge building to allow dialogue and exchanges that treasure life are necessary. Distinguishing what effectively belongs to Christian experience and what is cultural intervention to its living is essential.

In tropical countries, the livestock sector has to answer to a great challenge: an increase in animal products demand from the markets, which is predicted to double until 2050. Simultaneously, global changes such as climate changes, demographic increase and pressure over natural resources highlight vulnerability issues of rural population depending on livestock activities. Therefore, livestock activities have to face to this double challenge. This thesis proposes to study pastoral livestock systems regarding this double challenge. In this thesis, our aim is to answer to the following question: what are the relations between security means used by pastoral settlements and the technical and economical management of the herds? This question is applied on the rural community of Tessekre, in the sylvopastoral reserve of Ferlo, Senegal. This Sahelian zone of Ferlo is nearly exclusively dedicated to pastoral livestock activities and provides 25 % of the meat consumption of Dakar. A pluri-disciplinary approach is here presented : we associated livestock farming systems approaches to study the herd, to socioeconomic approaches in order to study the security of pastoral settlements. Concept of security used in this thesis is defined as: the ability for pastoral settlements to last over the long term, using four different security means. These security means are: accumulation of the herds, diversification of activities and incomes, long distance mobility; familial organization. In a first step, long term trajectories of settlements, their herds and activities have been established for 16 settlements. It was therefore possible to describe how the means of security were used and combined in the settlements and to establish distinct security profiles. This approach was coupled with a statistical analysis of the diversity of systems of activities of the 508 settlements in Tessekre and resulted in the characterization of the diversity of possible contributions of the herds to settlements security. In a second step, a monitoring of the herds in 10 settlements was realized during one year. This study gave data about technical and economic management of the herds. We showed that, even during a year marked by good climatic conditions, and even for secured profiles, accumulation of the herds was not always possible. High off-take rates of sheep herds were always realized during the year of monitoring. Regarding bovine herds, accumulation was possible for a part of the herds; in all cases, even if they were accumulated, bovine contributed to monetary needs of the settlements. Technical management was studied through several elements: sheepherding, long distance transhumance to Saloum, Tabaski rams sales. This study highlights constraints in the organization of familial workers. The study on Tabaski sales showed a diversity in the ways herders sell and purchase rams, whereas herd technical management is more homogeneous. Only the secured profiles are able to realize Tabaski sales at a great scale. In a third step, a particular security means was studied: the mobility of young migrants looking for diversification. 12 interviews were realized both in the settlements and in Dakar. These interviews revealed the different point of views existing in the settlements, regarding animal sales: the ones of the young more attracted by urban and consumerists ways of life and the ones of the family chieves, more attached to the accumulation of the herds, a warranty for settlement's security

The analysis of the relationship agriculture - livestock production in two agro-pastoral lands was carried out according to a systemic approach putting into interaction the areas of agro-pastoral operations. How is the sharing of the same space by two systems of activities performed by various actors? Because of this, the objective of this research is to understanding the relationships between actors by examining the mastery of space, and the practices of each type of player. Based on of qualitative analysis and semi-structured interviews carried out in two agro-pastoral lands, we show in particular that the existing interdependencies between the two systems of production (agriculture and livestock) in the space and the schedule of practices the environment are linked to climatic conditions and to seasons, but also to the power differential between the various actors. With spatial division resulting from the process of decentralization, new actors and elected officials are involved in decision making at the level of villages. Our findings illustrate the complex inner and external interplay of interactions between agriculture and livestock, and how the latter is crystallizing or partially mitigating the issue of sharing space and resources. The history of the settling of the residents and the first division confers on this area a very profound social foundation that regulates the access to and the management of the various resource areas. These analyses indicate a certain permanence of agricultural and pastoral practices but also their adjustment to an administrative and climate change

Pastoral land tenure in Sudanian savannas is less studied than pastoral land tenure in Sahelian areas. However, livestock breeding has been growing in Sudanian areas since the 1970s, and is now the second largest sources of wealth after agriculture. Increase in croplands and livestock stems from population growth. This entails a growing and potentially conflicting spatial competition between agriculture and stockbreeding. This PhD dissertation builds on the case of western Burkina Faso to deal with the issue of the role and the spatial organization of stockbreeding in regions under land pressure. Data were mainly collected through interviews with producers and key informants, questionnaires, accompanying along herds during transhumance and remote sensing analysis. The first part describes decrease in pasturelands and its consequences on pastoral mobility. The second part is entered in the search fields of political ecology and geography of power. The analysis of local power relations and national rural development policies shows that land pressure comes along with a territorialisation of bushes to the detriment of pasturelands. This results into a growth of socio-economic inequalities between herders. Finally, the third part gathers arguments in favour of pastoralism in Sudanian areas and demonstrates that this production system will continue only if a pastoral land right is created. The analysis of the role and the strategy of each actor gives tools to conduct a policy of consultation on shared use of resources and territorial integration of activities
