With the rapid evolution of mobile communication networks, the number of subscribers and their communication practices is increasing dramatically worldwide. However, fraudsters are also sniffing out the benefits. Detecting fraudsters from the massive volume of call detail records (CDR) in mobile communication networks has become an important yet challenging topic. Fortunately, Graph neural network (GNN) brings new possibilities for telecom fraud detection. However, the presence of the graph imbalance and GNN oversmoothing problems makes fraudster detection unsatisfactory. To address these problems, we propose a new fraud detector. First, we transform the user features with the help of a multilayer perceptron. Then, a reinforcement learning-based neighbor sampling strategy is designed to balance the number of neighbors of different classes of users. Next, we perform user feature aggregation using GNN. Finally, we innovatively treat the above augmented GNN as weak classifier and integrate multiple weak classifiers using the AdaBoost algorithm. A balanced focal loss function is also used to monitor the model training error. Extensive experiments are conducted on two open real-world telecom fraud datasets, and the results show that the proposed method is significantly effective for the graph imbalance problem and the oversmoothing problem in telecom fraud detection.

<p>This paper empirically explores consumer switching intentions, partial and total switching situations in the Ghana mobile telecom industry. Using data from a cross-sectional survey of 736 mobile subscribers from six global telecom networks in Ghana’s mobile telecommunication industry, the results indicate switching intentions are significantly different among customers of various mobile telecom service providers. Customers of MTN and Tigo mobile operators have stronger intentions to switch than those from the other firms. It also found that more non-porters defect and switch to other mobile networks than porters do. Consistent with the hypothesis, defectors (partial switching) are strongly associated with total switching behaviour than non-defectors. Also, in order to reduce subscriber defect or churn rate, mobile telecom operators should direct more effort and resource to promoting and educating their customers on the benefits of porting their mobile numbers to other networks. Theoretical and managerial implications are discussed. The paper contributes to the body of knowledge in the area of consumer switching behaviour in mobile telecom industry in emerging countries.</p>

This paper discusses location-based service for telecom providers. Most of the location-based services in the mobile networks are introduced and deployed by Internet companies. It leaves for telecom just the role of the data channel. Telecom providers should use their competitive advantages and offer own solutions. In our article, we discuss the sharing location information via geo messages. Geo messages let mobile users share location information as signatures to the standard messages (e.g., email, SMS). Rather than let some service constantly monitor (poll) the user’s location (as the most standalone services do) or share location info within any social circle (social network check-in, etc.) The Geo Messages approach lets users share location data on the peer to peer basis. Users can share own location info with any existing messaging systems. And messaging (e.g., SMS) is the traditional service for telecom.

The key to determining the network service level of telecom operators is resource allocation for mobile phone base station maintenance (MPBSM). Given intense market competition and higher consumer requirements for network service levels, an increasing proportion of resources have been allocated to MPBSM. Maintenance costs account for the rising fraction of direct costs, and the management of MPBSM resource allocation presents special challenges to telecom operators. China Mobile is the largest telecom operator in the world. Its subsidiary, China Mobile Sichuan, is the first in China to use revenue management in improving MPBSM resource allocation. On the basis of comprehensive revenue (including both economic revenue and social revenue), the subsidiary established a classification model of its base stations. The model scientifically classifies more than 25,000 base stations according to comprehensive revenue. China Mobile Sichuan also conducted differentiation allocation of MPBSM resources on the basis of the classification results. Furthermore, it optimized the assessment system of the telecom base stations to establish an assurance system for the use of MPBSM resources. After half-year implementation, the cell availability of both VIP base stations and total base stations significantly improved. The optimization also reduced economic losses to RMB 10.134 million, and enhanced customer satisfaction with network service by 3.2%.

As the voice-service-market of mobile telecommunication providers fast reaches its saturation amidst increasing competition, its revenue potential to telecom providers continue to decline. Therefore, understanding consumers use behavior portends important strategic consideration for customer acquisition and retention for telecom operators. This study seeks to empirically determine the factors that influence the acquisition of multiple GSM networks by university lecturers in Southeastern universities in Nigeria. Data were generated from a sample of 301 respondents. Three hypotheses were stated and tested using Analysis of variance (ANOVA). The result shows positive relationships between income, social affinity networks, and brand image and consumer acquisition of multi SIM networks. It is therefore, recommended that income, social affinity, and brand image be used as strategic marketing tools to attract customers to acquire a particular network.

The information contained within Call Details records (CDRs) of mobile networks can be used to study the operational efficacy of cellular networks and behavioural pattern of mobile subscribers. In this study, we extract actionable insights from the CDR data and show that there exists a strong spatiotemporal predictability in real network traffic patterns. This knowledge can be leveraged by the mobile operators for effective network planning such as resource management and optimization. Motivated by this, we perform the spatiotemporal analysis of CDR data publicly available from Telecom Italia. Thus, on the basis of spatiotemporal insights, we propose a framework for mobile traffic classification. Experimental results show that the proposed model based on machine learning technique is able to accurately model and classify the network traffic patterns. Furthermore, we demonstrate the application of such insights for resource optimisation.

The trend of 5G mobile networks is increasing with the number of users and the transmission rate. Many operators are turning to small cell and indoor coverage of telecom network service. With the emerging Software Defined Networking and Network Function Virtualization technologies, Internet Service Provider is able to deploy their networks more flexibly and dynamically. In addition to the change of the wireless mobile network deployment model, it also drives the development trend of the Micro Operator (μO). Telecom operators can provide regional network services through public buildings, shopping malls, or industrial sites. In addition, localized network services are provided and bandwidth consumption is reduced. The distributed architecture ofμO tackles computing requirements for applications, data, and services from cloud data center to edge network devices or to the micro data center ofμO. The service model ofμO is capable of reducing network latency in response to the low-latency applications for future 5G edge computing environment. This paper addresses the design pattern of 5G micro operator and proposes a Decision Tree Based Flow Redirection (DTBFR) mechanism to redirect the traffic flows to neighbor service nodes. The DTBFR mechanism allows differentμOs to share network resources and speed up the development of edge computing in the future.

Nepal Telecommunication (NTC) and Ncell are the two main telecom players in Nepal at the moment. Ncell has been primarily focused on offering Global System for Mobile (GSM) mobile lines, while NTC offers all types of phone services. Although NTC remains the countrys leading provider of total subscribers, Ncell recently overtook NTC as the countrys leading provider of GSM mobile lines. This study aims to assess customer satisfaction in two highly competitive Nepalese telecom industries and make a comparison based on service quality. Descriptive and inferential tools are used to draw the comparative analysis. The research identifies the security service quality dimension as the major dimension of both telecommunication networks. It also locates reliability service quality of the NTC network is highly correlated with customer satisfaction whereas the security of the Ncell network is highly correlated with customer satisfaction. Tangibles are a high effect on customer satisfaction of NTC whereas security highly affects customer satisfaction of Ncell network. This study will aid the telecommunications industry in general, as well as the service quality, in better understanding their main areas of strength and, as a result, better framing their decision-making strategies to increase customer satisfaction and gain a competitive advantage.

While growing at a fast phase, mobile gaming industry is facing a transformation both in terms of technical infrastructures as well as business models. At the users’ end, formerly preferred specific game consoles are increasingly being replaced by mobile phone platforms. From the game developers’ perspective, the new possibilities to distribute games over mobile phone networks as well as over the Internet, affect both the viable partner relationships and possible revenue stream options. In this paper we introduce analytical tools to evaluate business models of software companies producing mobile games. With the help of these tools, we explore and analyze the revenue logics and related product distribution models of four companies producing mobile games to the international market. The results indicate that even though the fast growing market offers a plethora of opportunities to agile software companies, the revenue models are governed by telecom-operators, who are currently reaping the largest benefits from the business.

5G systems are putting increasing pressure on Telecom operators to enhance users’ experience, leading to the development of more techniques with the aim of improving service quality. However, it is essential to take into consideration not only users’ demands but also service providers’ interests. In this work, we explore policies that satisfy both views. We first formulate a mathematical model to compute End-to-End (E2E) delay experienced by mobile users in Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) environments. Then, dynamic Virtual Machine (VM) allocation policies are presented, with the objective of satisfying mobile users Quality of Service (QoS) requirements, while optimally using the cloud resources by exploiting VM resource reuse. Thus, maximizing the service providers’ profit should be ensured while providing the service required by users. We further demonstrate the benefits of these policies in comparison with previous works.

The operation and maintenance management of telecom platforms puts more emphasis on operation and alarm monitoring and less on business flow, and it is difficult to have a seamless connection between operation and maintenance and sales. To improve the cooperative efficiency and the informatization level of telecom platform operation and maintenance, a new operation and maintenance system integrating Apriori association rules for a telecom platform is proposed. In this paper, the Apriori algorithm is firstly used to analyse the fault correlation of the operation and maintenance system of the telecommunications platform to get the alarm message. Then, the fault risk of the operation and maintenance platform is evaluated intelligently by the system-business alarm causality model. Finally, based on the fixed end and the mobile end, the dynamic presentation of the system running state and alarm monitoring, device query and positioning, and online and offline inspection are implemented and designed, respectively. Experimental results show that the proposed operation and maintenance systems integrating Apriori association rules for the telecom platform innovate the cooperative mode between the operations and sales team, and the average time reduces to 3.9 minutes from 4.7 minutes and the risk forecasting accuracy increases from 8% to 26%. The assumed method can significantly improve the operational efficiency and intelligent level of the telecom platform’s system and business.

In recent years, Reliance Jio’s offer of 4G services, guaranteeing free voice calls and ‘unlimited’ data streaming, lead to disruption in the Indian telecom market with other cellular operators losing their revenue and customer base. To comprehensively analyze this churn in the Indian telecom industry and its impact on mobile phone customers, the article argues for observing the entanglement of infrastructural and platform-related discourses at three levels of operation: Jio’s strategies to capture the Indian telecom market and the responses by the leading incumbent service provider (Airtel), ordinary citizens’ phone use practices and infrastructural encounters, and the government’s vision for India’s digital future. Connecting pipes to platforms, Jio made infrastructural investments (in spectrum, cell towers, and fiber optics networks) to promote its suite of apps (JioTV, JioChat, and JioMoney). Ordinary citizens relate their access/proximity to telecom infrastructure (cell antennas) to their ability to effectively use apps on their phones. ‘Digital India’ vision purportedly facilitated infrastructural growth to create platforms that would support demonetization and facilitate transparent governance. Through such a three-pronged analysis, I conceptualize ‘infrastructural imaginaries’ that are coproduced by states and citizens, and lie at the intersection of structured state policy/corporate initiatives and lived experiences/affective encounters of ordinary citizens.

Recently different capacity boosting technologies, <span>including 3D beamforming and expanding operating bandwidth have been investigated and included in the enhanced fourth generation (4G) and fifth-generation standards. For mobile operators to enhance their network performance, applying these advanced technologies is vital. To achieve that, planning and optimization work need to consider the spatiotemporal distribution of users. Although the capacity impact of advanced antenna technologies is investigated well, deployment options to exploit their benefits in a cost-effective manner considering a realistic network environment are seldom reported. This work presents a data driven and multi-objective based optimal vertical beams placement for an enhanced 4G mobile network with the newly introduced C-band. The method is utilized for an area located in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, taking into account the existing 4G mobile network as a reference configuration. Users are distributed based on the data collected by ethio-telecom network management system. Findings indicate that optimal vertical beams placement achieved for gradual deployment with consideration cell edge and aggregate throughput performances while reducing network cost. While being cost-effective, up to 69.2% and 73.8% cell edge performance gain is achieved at 20 and 30 pareto points relative to an existing macro mobile network.</span>

The telecommunications industry covers various sectors and services such as broadband, telecom equipment, telecom infrastructure, telephone service providers, mobile virtual network operators, 5G, and the white space spectrum. Smart Cards may be chosen as one of the best mechanisms for authorized access to these services in the telecom sector. Recently, Jin Kwak proposed a scheme based on dynamic identity for authentication purposes, mentioning that the scheme does not suffer from security breaches and attacks. This paper illustrates Jin Kwak’s technique and finds that it violates the purpose contrary to his claim. Due to a design issue in his scheme, an adversary may guess the password in a polynomial time and impersonate a legal user. Furthermore, other attacks, including replay attack, are also possible, as the time stamp was not protected in this scheme. We propose an improved version of this scheme, and it is free from various attacks, including password guessing by hiding the identity of the user and replay attacks by using the time stamp securely. The results mentioned in performance and efficiency comparison show a faster scheme than many existing schemes.

In this paper, we study the features of big data and data analytics. We see how Big Data contributes to mobile networks. We give a term in which big data generally refers to a large amount of digital data. Also, we estimate that the amount processed by "Big Data" systems will double every two years. Hence, Big Data on mobile networks need to be analyzed in-depth according to retrieve exciting and useful information. Big Data provides unprecedented opportunities for internet service providers to understand the behavior and requirements of their users, which in turn enables real-time decision making across a wide range of applications. After that, we mention the dimensions often describe the 4Vs of Big Data. We continue with the study about the use of big data analytics in mobile networks. As we see, new technologies for managing big data in a highly scalable, cost-effective, and damage-resistant manner are required. So, beyond 2020 the system capacity and data rates in mobile networks must support thousands of times more traffic than 2010 levels. Furthermore, we mention the end-to-end latency, the massive number of connections, the cost, the Quality of Experience, the Issues, and finally, the big data management. We continue with the study about the big data analytics in 5G. The 5G networks standardizing and the 5G mobile optimization are crucial areas. There are new research areas were exploring new analytics techniques in big data according to discover new patterns and extract knowledge from the data are collected. Big data analytics can provide organizations with the ability to profile and segment customers based on distinct socioeconomic characteristics and increase customer satisfaction and retention levels. Also, Big Data analytics techniques can provide telecom providers with in-depth knowledge of networks before making informed decisions. Also, as we see, these analytics techniques can help Telecommunication providers to monitor and analyze various types of data as well as event messages on networks. Important information, like business intelligence, can be extracted from momentary and stored data. Hence, the mass adoption of smartphones, mobile broadband modems, tablets, and mobile data applications has been overwhelmingly wireless. Operators bend under the pressure and cost of continuously adding capacity and improving coverage while maximizing the use of the existing components of their range. Advanced radio access technologies, and all Internet Protocols, open internet network architectures must evolve smoothly from 4G systems. So those needs are leading us to make a study about the heterogeneous network or else HetNet for 5G networks. We are continuing with the challenges, and we mention about the curse of modularity, dimensions procedure, feature engineering, non-linearity, Bonferonni's principle, category report, variance and bias, data locality, data heterogeneity, noisy data, data availability, real-time processing, and streaming, data provenance, and data security.

Due to the limitations of mobile phone positioning technology in the past, it is difficult for an advertising system to obtain users’ locations. Although there are many advertising delivery ideas in the market, time and location-based advertising delivery system have not been able to meet the delivery needs of advertisers. This study investigates various time and location-based advertising needs in the market and finds a universal data processing model that can quickly organize user positioning data from telecom base stations into screening information. It helps us to find specific audiences and to deliver advertisements to target audiences quickly. This study evaluated various advertising scenarios’ effectiveness and explained why there is a performance gap usually between five to ten times worse compared to the past. This study discusses the problems encountered when implementing the advertising system and how to improve them. This study also examines advertising interaction methods based on 5G features, business cooperation and profit splitting with telecom operators, and more diversified data application orientations and possibilities such as market surveys, urban traffic, security issues, and epidemic prevention. The future challenge is to develop footprint tracking technologies based on 5G and provide smart cities with lives-protecting or cost-saving solutions.

<p>The cellular industry of Nepal has grown by many folds with the influx of more mobile network providers in the market creating a hyper competition among themselves. Retaining the existing customers rather than just focusing on the regular market expansion is, therefore, becominginevitable for them to sustain. In this realm, this research carried out with the core objective of identifying and assessing the impact of customer retention strategies adopted by GSM Cellular Network companies, primarily Ncell &amp; Nepal Telecom within the locality of Pokhara, taking a sample of 192 network users as respondents within a survey based research design framework, surfaced some important findings. Five out of the six customer retention strategies so identified: Service quality, customer care services, price, loyalty enhancement programs and communications showed an association with the type of network customer use except for other service facilities which showed no association with the network types. Very few of users from Pokhara were thinking to switch over to other networks. Internet proved to be the most effective marketing strategies than other media. Service Quality and loyalty enhancement programs were found to be the most preferred customer retention strategies by the users of both networks.</p><p> <strong><em>Economic Literature</em></strong><em>, </em>Vol. XIII August 2016, page 1-8</p>

With the increasing amounts of terminal equipment with higher requirements of communication quality in the emerging fifth generation mobile communication network (5G), the energy consumption of 5G base stations (BSs) is increasing significantly, which not only raises the operating expenses of telecom operators but also imposes a burden on the environment. To solve this problem, a two-step energy management method that coordinates 5G macro BSs for 5G networks with user clustering is proposed. The coordination among the communication equipment and the standard equipment in 5G macro BSs is developed to reduce both the energy consumption and the electricity costs. A novel user clustering method is proposed together with Benders decomposition to accelerate the solving process. Simulation results show that the proposed method is computationally efficient and can ensure near-optimal performance, effectively reducing the energy consumption and electricity costs compared with the conventional dispatching scheme.

The use of mobile data has increased and will continue to increase in the future, because more data is moving to wireless networks such as 5G. Cooling energy need is also expected to increase in indoor telecom rooms, and can be as high as the equipment’s own power consumption. The world’s first liquid Base Transceiver Station (BTS) was adopted into commercial use in 2018, in Helsinki, Finland. Conventional air-cooled BTS hardware was converted into liquid-cooled BTS equipment. Heat from the BTS was pumped out of the site room, and thus ventilation or air conditioning was not needed for the heat load from the BTS. Heat stored in the liquid was released into the ventilation duct of the building, still providing annual cooling energy savings of 70%, when compared to air cooling. In the future, 80% of the total dissipated energy, 13450 kWh/a in total, can potentially be used for heating purposes. In terms of CO2 emissions, adapting liquid cooling showed an 80% reduction potential when compared to air cooling.

The number of users of current mobile and cellular networks is constantly increasing. The allocation of spectrum to its users is constantly facing various hurdles. This causes users to leave that network and connect to another network. Thus, those telecom companies are constantly struggling to provide high-speed services to the users. As a result, the demand for 5G networks is currently increasing. Considering these, an algorithm has been proposed here to suit the needs of the users. Its main feature is that it easily identifies the primary and secondary users of the 5G network and creates a spectrum allocation system for them accordingly. Generally, all other methods are designed with the primary user in mind. Furthermore, the spectrum hole calculation that is currently being proposed is done accurately so that the spectrum switching processes required for the secondary user can take place here very quickly so that the secondary user can use the spectrum without any hindrance. The proposed model achieved 93.29% of spectrum blocking, 6.71% of spectrum band dropping, 94.03% bandwidth utilization, 1073 ms end-to-end delay, and 17273 bps of throughput. The proposed model effectively handles the spectrum and intelligent approach to resolve the spectrum hole problems. The existing models are practically faced with these problems. The proposed model spectrum utilization and efficiency were increased compared with the existing models.

5th Generation Cellular technology is not just one more technical innovation, rather it is going to be the the most prominant platform for the other innovations to get it happened. Mobile networks are changing the way people communicate and access information. Network access at anytime and anywhere is transforming the telecom industry. 5G technology will enable flexible, reliable, and secure wireless networks to connect people with all applications, services, and things, thus leading human race into the era of "Everything on Mobile". The 5th Generation of the Internet in Telecommunications will open the new doors to the Internet of Things (IoT), Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), Neural Networks, etc. But for the last several years since its designing and implementation strategies, 5G technology has been embroiled in various social and technical controversies. The testing of 5G in different countries of the world has shown that in future the user will get the expected data speed but the time to come will show how much the power level of high frequency signal harms human health and other services. Initially 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) and ITU have combinely proposed two way of infrastructure for the implementation of 5G i.e. SA architecture and NSA architecture with pros and cons with both. This analytical paper narrates the different issues that may arise upon the implementation of 5G infrastructure. The severity of issues related to multiple frequency bands availability, health hazards, airline frequency band conflict as well as coding discrepancy will be different for Stand Alone infrastruction option and for Non Stand-Alone infrastructure choice.

As one of the core data assets of telecom operators, base station almanac (BSA) plays an important role in the operation and maintenance of mobile networks. It is also an important source of data for the location-based service (LBS) providers. However, it is always less timely updated, nor it is accurate enough. Besides, it is not open to third parties. Conventional methods detect only the location of the base station (BS) which cannot satisfy the needs of network optimization and maintenance. Because of these drawbacks, in this paper, a big-data driven method of BSA information detection and cellular coverage identification is proposed. With the help of network-related data crowd sensed from the massive number of smartphone users in the live network, the algorithm can estimate more parameters of BSA with higher accuracy than conventional methods. The coverage capability of each cell was also identified in a granularity of small geographical grids. Computational results validate the proposed algorithm with higher performance and detection ability over the existing ones. The new method can be expected to improve the scope, accuracy, and timeliness of BSA, serving for wireless network optimization and maintenance as well as LBS service.

Near-field communication (NFC) is a set of communication protocols that enable two electronic devices. Its security and reliability are welcomed by mobile terminal manufactures, banks, telecom operators, and third-party payment platforms. Simultaneously, it has also drawn more and more attention from hackers and attackers, and NFC-enabled devices are facing increasing threats. To improve the security of the NFC technology, the paper studied the technology of discovering security vulnerabilities of NFC Data Exchange Format (NDEF), the most important data transmission protocol. In the paper, we proposed an algorithm, GTCT (General Test Case Construction and Test), based on fuzzing to construct test cases and test the NDEF protocol. GTCT adopts four strategies to construct test cases, manual, generation, mutation, and “reverse analysis,” which can detect logic vulnerabilities that fuzzing cannot find and improve the detection rate. Based on GTCT, we designed an NDEF vulnerability discovering framework and developed a tool named “GNFCVulFinder” (General NFC Vulnerability Finder). By testing 33 NFC system services and applications on Android and Windows Phones, we found eight vulnerabilities, including DoS vulnerabilities of NFC service, logic vulnerabilities about opening Bluetooth/Wi-Fi/torch, design flaws about the black screen, and DoS of NFC applications. Finally, we give some security suggestions for the developer to enhance the security of NFC.

Abstract. Mobile networks carrier gather and accumulate in their database system a considerable volume of data, that carries geographic information which is crucial for the growth of the company. This work aimed develop a prototype called Spatial On -Line Analytic Processing (SOLAP) to carry out multidimensional analysis and to anticipate the extension of the area of radio antennas. To this end, the researcher started by creating a Data warehouse that allows storing Big Data received from the Radio antennas. Then, doing the OLAP(online analytic processing) in order to perform multidimensional Analysis which used through GIS to represent the Data in different scales in satellite image as a topographic background). As a result, this prototype enables the carriers to receive continuous reports on different scales (Town, city, country) and to identify the BTS that works and performs well or shows the rate of its working (the way behaves) its pitfalls. By the end, it gives a clear image on the future working strategy respecting the urban planning, and the digital terrain model (DTM).

With the rapid growth of the telecom sector heading towards 5G and 6G and the emergence of high-bandwidth and time-sensitive applications, mobile network operators (MNOs) are driven to plan their networks to meet these new requirements in a cost-effective manner. The cloud radio access network (CRAN) has been presented as a promising architecture that can decrease capital expenditures (Capex) and operating expenditures (Opex) and improve network performance. The fronthaul (FH) is a part of the network that links the remote radio head (RRH) to the baseband unit (BBU); these links need high-capacity and low latency connections necessitating costeffective implementation. On the other hand, the transport delay and FH deployment costs increase if the BBU is not placed in an appropriate location. In this paper, we propose an integer linear program (ILP) that simultaneously optimizes BBU and FH deployment resulting in minimal capital expenditures (Capex). Simulations are run to compare the performance of star and tree topologies with the varying line of sight probabilities (LoS) and delay thresholds. We consider fiber-optic (FO) and free-space optics (FSO) technologies as FH for the CRAN. Finally, we provide an analysis of Opex and the total costs of ownership (TCO), i.e., a technoeconomic analysis.

Mobile-health (m-health) is described as the application of medical sensors and mobile computing to the healthcare provision. While 5G networks can support a variety of m-health services, applications such as telesurgery, holographic communications, and augmented/virtual reality are already emphasizing their limitations. These limitations apply to both the Quality of Service (QoS) and the Quality of Experience (QoE). However, 6G mobile networks are predicted to proliferate over the next decade in order to solve these limitations, enabling high QoS and QoE. Currently, academia and industry are concentrating their efforts on the 6G network, which is expected to be the next major game-changer in the telecom industry and will significantly impact all other related verticals. The exponential growth of m-health multimedia traffic (e.g., audio, video, and images) creates additional challenges for service providers in delivering a suitable QoE to their customers. As QoS is insufficient to represent the expectations of m-health end-users, the QoE of the services is critical. In recent years, QoE has attracted considerable attention and has established itself as a critical component of network service and operation evaluation. This article aims to provide the first thorough survey on a promising research subject that exists at the intersection of two well-established domains, i.e., QoE and m-health, and is driven by the continuing efforts to define 6G. This survey, in particular, creates a link between these two seemingly distinct domains by identifying and discussing the role of 6G in m-health applications from a QoE viewpoint. We start by exploring the vital role of QoE in m-health multimedia transmission. Moreover, we examine how m-health and QoE have evolved over the cellular network’s generations and then shed light on several critical 6G technologies that are projected to enable future m-health services and improve QoE, including reconfigurable intelligent surfaces, extended radio communications, terahertz communications, enormous ultra-reliable and low-latency communications, and blockchain. In contrast to earlier survey papers on the subject, we present an in-depth assessment of the functions of 6G in a variety of anticipated m-health applications via QoE. Multiple 6G-enabled m-health multimedia applications are reviewed, and various use cases are illustrated to demonstrate how 6G-enabled m-health applications are transforming human life. Finally, we discuss some of the intriguing research challenges associated with burgeoning multimedia m-health applications.

Technology has advanced significantly from the analogue period to the digital era. Digital Learning Technology (DLT) is a learning paradigm based on the use of ubiquitous latest technologies, by using smart devices. It can be described as a learning environment that is assisted in daily life by wireless networks, mobile, and embedded computers. It aims to offer content and interaction to students wherever they are, at any time. The learning process has advanced thanks to the technology revolution, which has also fundamentally altered how knowledge is shared and learned. At present, there exist other frameworks too, but they are centered towards different paradigms, and point of view pertaining to DLT with its emphasis on Telecommunication Sector has not been taken into consideration. As, existing frameworks are centered towards different environments hence there exists a need to add dimensions of Empowered Learner, Digital Citizen, Knowledge Curator, Innovative Designer, Computational Thinker and Creator, Communicator & Global Collaborator. These have not been integrated together in existing available research. The study will ascertain level of knowledge of DLT and examined factors which affect the adoption rate, use, and role of DLT in telecoms setups. The results of this research will help create a framework that, if used in any academic or learning setting in a technology-based firm.

ADR (Atomic Delayed Replication) is a controllable replication manager implemented on top of commercial distributed relational databases. ADR's goal is to enable various well-defined trade-offs between database coherence, throughput and response time in large database networks, e.g. for telecom applications. By combining a strategy for distributed database design with a specific replication protocol, ADR preserves the ACID properties with a controlled relaxation of coherence between primary and secondary copies. We first discuss formal characteristics of ADR, and present the implementation techniques required to realize these formal characteristics on top of commercial distributed database technology. Then, after reviewing a validated analytical performance model for the approach, we demonstrate its flexibility by summarizing experiences with two industrial ADR applications in telecommunications management, both jointly developed with Philips Laboratories. One is database support for the integrated operation and evolution of Intelligent Network telephone services, where secondary copies are held within a distributed database system optimized for throughput and availability during schema evolution. The other concerns database support for mobile phones in a City-wide DECT setting (Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications), where secondary copies are held in main memory caches outside the DBMS.

For telecom operators, it is of great significance to employ artificial intelligence (AI) and big data technology in a software-defined network (SDN) in order to achieve intelligent network control, traffic management and optimization. This paper proposes a solution for intelligent work control and traffic optimization. This paper is mainly focused on SDN-based network traffic algorithm optimization and experimental verification. In this paper, we design a network control mechanism for network intelligent control as well as solutions for traffic optimization based on SDN and artificial intelligence. We analyze operators’ network requirements (e.g., the carrying of the 5th generation mobile network (5G) service, multi-protocol label switching virtual private networks optimization, cloudification of services and the IP backbone network). Then, we propose an intelligent network control architecture based on SDN and artificial intelligence. The proposed architecture consists of three modules, including a network status collection/perception module, an AI intelligent analysis module and an SDN controller module. Moreover, this paper also analyzes the objects of traffic optimization as well as routing calculation algorithms (e.g., the greedy algorithm, the top-k-shortest paths (KSP) algorithm) and routing optimization algorithms (e.g., particle swarm optimization, simulated annealing and genetic algorithms). In addition, we also put forward three optimization algorithms for the operator’s network, namely, network congestion control and prevention algorithms, resource preemption algorithms and balance of the entire network traffic algorithms. Then, we propose optimization algorithms for the above three objectives of operator network optimization, respectively. Finally, we conduct large-scale experiments to verify the effectiveness of the control mechanism and algorithms. The experimental results demonstrate that the use of SDN and artificial intelligence in operator networks can realize network intelligent control and traffic optimization more intelligently.

With the system’s long-term use, decision-makers began to wonder if useful information could be extracted from vast amounts of historical data to help them summarize or even predict changes in customer demand and purchasing behavior. This assumption is possible thanks to the rise and development of data mining technology. Association rules are increasingly being applied to customer behavior analysis as the most active branch of data mining in the last ten years. The majority of association rule research currently focuses on one-dimensional data association analysis of a user’s package using classical algorithms. The use of association rules mining on multidimensional data with multiple attributes in the telecom service industry is limited due to the complexity of the data structure and algorithm.

With the proliferation of cellular networks, the ubiquitous availability of new-generation multimedia devices, and their wide-ranging data applications, telecom network operators are increasingly deploying the number of cellular base stations (BSs) to deal with unprecedented service demand. The rapid and radical deployment of the cellular network significantly exerts energy consumption and carbon footprints to the atmosphere. The ultimate objective of this work is to develop a sustainable and environmentally-friendly cellular infrastructure through compelling utilization of the locally available renewable energy sources (RES) namely solar photovoltaic (PV), wind turbine (WT), and biomass generator (BG). This article addresses the key challenges of envisioning the hybrid solar PV/WT/BG powered macro BSs in Bangladesh considering the dynamic profile of the RES and traffic intensity in the tempo-spatial domain. The optimal system architecture and technical criteria of the proposed system are critically evaluated with the help of HOMER optimization software for both on-grid and off-grid conditions to downsize the electricity generation cost and waste outflows while ensuring the desired quality of experience (QoE) over 20 years duration. Besides, the green energy-sharing mechanism under the off-grid condition and the grid-tied condition has been critically analyzed for optimal use of green energy. Moreover, the heuristic algorithm of the load balancing technique among collocated BSs has been incorporated for elevating the throughput and energy efficiency (EE) as well. The spectral efficiency (SE), energy efficiency, and outage probability performance of the contemplated wireless network are substantially examined using Matlab based Monte–Carlo simulation under a wide range of network configurations. Simulation results reveal that the proper load balancing technique pledges zero outage probability with expected system performance whereas energy cooperation policy offers an attractive solution for developing green mobile communications employing better utilization of renewable energy under the proposed hybrid solar PV/WT/BG scheme.

Feedback data directly collected from users are a great source of information for telecom operators. They are usually retrieved as complaints and survey data. For the mobile telecoms sector, one purpose is to manage those data to identify network problems leading to customer dissatisfaction. In this paper, a quantitative methodology is used to predict dissatisfied users. It focuses on extraction and selection of predictive features, followed by a classification model. Two sets of data are used for experiments: one is related to complaints, the other to survey data. Since the methodology is similar for those two sets, prediction efficiency and influence of features are compared. Specific influence of user loyalty in survey data is highlighted. Thus, the methodology presented in this article provides a reference for the mobile operators to improve procedures for collecting feedback answers.

Microwave line-of-sight radio relay (RR) systems are a constitutive part of a telecom operator transport network, as an alternative to optical transmission systems when the latter are not technically possible or rational to implement. Nowadays, RR links are quite often used in the access network for connecting mobile radio base stations, thus also enabling traffic aggregation, and so on. In this paper, we focus on a practical, real-life, five-section heterogeneous RR network, comprising classic synchronous digital hierarchy (SDH) and SDH new generation network (NGN) architecture, hybrid parallel and mutually independent transmission of native Ethernet and TDM services, and all-IP network parts. Specifically, the main task of this work is to answer whether such a diverse RR system could satisfy the quality norms for Ethernet-based services, meaning whether a tolerable RR unavailability will necessarily imply the according Ethernet quality of service (QoS) degradation. This question is addressed by the comprehensive in-service and out-of-service testing of an operational hybrid RR transmission system. After extensive practical testing and appropriate analysis of the achieved results, it came out that the impact of RR-level impairments that determine the performance prediction affected the Ethernet QoS to the extent that BER values increased to the acceptability threshold values. We believe that the preliminary results reported here could serve as a hint and a framework for a more comprehensive cross-layer test strategy in terms of both test diversity and repeating rate, which contemporary network operators need to implement in order to enable the appropriate quality of experience for users of their services.

Abstract. Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) and its evolutions are nowadays the most affordable and widespread data communication infrastructure available almost world wide. Moreover the always growing cellular phone market is pushing the development of new devices with higher performances and lower power consumption. All these characteristics make UMTS really useful for the implementation of an "easy to deploy" temporary real-time seismic station. Despite these remarkable features, there are many drawbacks that must be properly taken in account to effectively transmit the seismic data: Internet security, signal and service availability, power consumption. – Internet security: exposing seismological data services and seismic stations to the Internet is dangerous, attack prone and can lead to downtimes in the services, so we setup a dedicated Virtual Private Network (VPN) service to protect all the connected devices. – Signal and service availability: while for temporary experiment a carefull planning and an accurate site selection can minimize the problem, this is not always the case with rapid response networks. Moreover, as with any other leased line, the availability of the UMTS service during a seismic crisis is basically unpredictable. Nowadays in Italy during a major national emergency a Committee of the Italian Civil Defense ensures unified management and coordination of emergency activities. Inside it the telecom companies are committed to give support to the crisis management improving the standards in their communication networks. – Power consumption: it is at least of the order of that of the seismic station and, being related to data flow and signal quality is largely unpredictable. While the most secure option consists in adding a second independent solar power supply to the seismic station, this is not always a very convenient solution since it doubles the cost and doubles the equipment on site. We found that an acceptable trade-off is to add an inexpensive Low Voltage Disconnect (LVD) circuit to the UMTS router power supply that switches off the data transmission when the power is low. This greatly reduces the probability of data loss but lowers the real-time data availabilty. This approach guarantees on the average a satisfactory data acquistion rate, only in very few cases and when the real-time data is extremely important for a particular site we needed to double the power supply on the site. Overall the UMTS data transmission has been used in most temporary seismic experiments and in all seismic emergencies happened in Italy since 2010 and has proved to be a very cost effective approach with real-time data acquisition rates usually greater than 97 % and all the benefits that result from the fast integration of the temporary data in the National Network monitoring system and in the EIDA data bank.
