Повний текст джерелаMarket information and established communication between seller and buyer play an important role in business activities. This thesis investigates the Transkei area in the Eastern Cape
Province, South Africa to find out how to empower rural farmers by providing them with less-expensive mobile technology enabling them to post and advertise their produce, access market
information on a common database, and find and communicate with potential customers. The farmers&rsquo
requirements were identified using quantitative and qualitative methods and a prototype
consisting of USSD and web applications was developed. It allows the farmer to follow a sequence of menu commands to send a request to the database and access market information, such
as commodity prices, and post information about their own produce so as to attract more customers. The low cost of USSD and the ubiquity of mobile phones enable the system to be usable, affordable and effective. During the final stage of development, the system was tested successfully and addressed a major problem faced by farmers, i.e. lack of access to market information.

Повний текст джерелаThe work done in this study focuses on communication and data transmission in the context of sensor networks. To improve the reliability of transmission, relays are inserted between the sensors and the destination in order to correct errors in transmissions using LDPC codes. The architecture is optimized thanks to the block codes but also to the error detection protocols and the use of a combination of the error correction and detection. Another interesting way to improve performances is to use multiple antenna systems. Energy efficiency is evaluated in the protocols studied and the solutions proposed. Besides, a joint optimization of channel coding and physical network coding is proposed in this paper

The author’s thesis: firms will use mobile Internet technology only if it improves their productivity. His argument reveals four questions: (1) How can the firm evaluate mobile Internet technology? (2) What determines the use in the perspective of the firm? (3) Do standards of implementation exist? (4) Are there business cases of mobile Internet technology use in the firm? These questions are being answered by a thorough observation of the firm’s practice

Повний текст джерелаIn recent years, South African universities have been faced with increased massification as a result of more students entering higher education institutions. Some of the students are from poor communities such as rural areas and former black townships which are still educationally disadvantaged. These students, who have been described as ‘digital strangers’ in other studies, have had very little access to or had never used computers prior to university. With increased computerisation in higher education institutions, digital strangers face problems integrating into computer based learning. In contrast to computer access, mobile phone ownership is pervasive and ownership is not socially differentiated in the South African context. This study therefore sought to explore the use of mobile phones to support learning by first year female science students in an extended academic program at the University of Cape Town. Using critical theory, Gee’s notions of Big (D) and little (d) discourses and a qualitative case study methodology, the study examined student’s technological identities. Whilst the results of the study show the powerlessness that digital strangers feel when exposed to computers during their first year of study, the results also show that students identify with their mobile phones because the technology is part of their Discourse. The mobile phone provides emancipation and empowerment that the students need to survive in a challenging science fields through informal and affective learning necessitated by the various internet enabled applications of the technology. The study also showed that students found transferable skills from their mobile phones to computers, thereby enhancing their transition into computer based learning. The study recommends that higher education institutions should consider mobile phones as viable learning tools and the technology should not be regarded as separate from the computer, but rather the two should be viewed as complimentary educational tools.

The workshop concludes the Research Seminar Series, which has provided a platform for disseminating the latest research activities in related technologies through its weekly seminars. The EEE courses cover a broad range of technologies and this is reflected in the variety of topics presented during the workshop. In total, thirty-three papers have been selected for the proceedings, which have been divided into seven sections. The workshop aims to be as close to a `real¿ event as possible. Hence, authors have responded to a Call for Papers with an abstract, prior to the submission of the final paper. This has been a novel experience for many, if not all of the contributors. Clearly, authors have taken up the challenge with enthusiasm, resulting in what promises to be an interesting and informative workshop.

Повний текст джерелаEvidence shows that information and communications technologies (ICT), especially mobile telecommunications services, can lead to sustained economic growth and human development. Mobile technologies are increasingly used as a transformational tool to foster economic growth, accelerate knowledge transfer, develop local capacities, raise productivity, and alleviate poverty in a variety of sectors. In that respect, in the last decade, ICT development has become a key strategic area for policy engagement in emerging economies. To support policy-makers and marketing practitioners in designing optimal telecommunications sector development strategies, an increasing research focus is now being placed on the impediments to implementing ICT solutions in the developing world. As a contribution to this field of research, this study aims at (i) identifying the economic and socio-cultural determinants affecting the capacity of developing countries to adopt new technologies and innovations, and at (ii) defining relevant policy principles likely to foster the diffusion of ICT solutions in emerging economies that are characterized by strong income inequality and uncertainty avoidance

Повний текст джерелаTransactional distance (TD) theory argues that psychological and communications barriers have the potential of creating misunderstandings in any formation of learning contexts. Distance education is seen as providing both opportunities and challenges. The distance programme being studied has experienced high deferment rates. However, the lack of communication infrastructural challenges and specifically lack of interaction is one major challenge hindering reduction of TD for remotely dispersed distance learners. It has become evident that WhatsApp popularity has risen; one unique feature is its affordance to enhance communication within a group. Hence, WhatsApp group was used to enhance interactions, as well as nurturing social engagement that creates dialogue and sharing amongst a virtual group. This study was aimed at enhancing dialogue as a potential of reducing TD amongst distance students for purposes of improving their study experiences. This study set out to explore how Salmon's (2000) 5-stage Model could be used as one way of implementing a mobile-mediated WhatsApp group activity as an opportunity to reduce TD. Six pre-service teachers participated in the WhatsApp mediated group activity virtually to try and find out how implementing a WhatsApp group activity could enhance dialogue consequently reduce TD.

Повний текст джерелаEither « developed », « emerging » or « developing », every society is under the IT influence. Among all these technologies is the mobile phone, which through its strong growth, is a challenge both for sociability studies and IT technologies uses studies. This thesis, whose central theme is devoted to NTIC in Morocco and in particular on the mobile phone, aims for exploring, through three parts divided in chapters, the direct or indirect connection existing between the use of the mobile phone and other phenomenons. This study is intended to give parts of answers to the reasons of the strong interest the Moroccan population takes in owning this media and analyse its distribution process as a technological innovation in this society. The most significant part of our study is the surveys carried out in Morocco and France. This field research makes the link between two areas in Morocco and two others in France regarding the MRE1. So, through this contribution, we detect, after the analysis of the surveys, that the use of the Mobile phone does not only result from technologies but definitely issues from multidisciplinary behaviours. It does not only rely on age, sex or social and occupational criteria but calls for the notion of «homo situs», notion which sends back to the black box, made of the the culture, language, religion and tradition of the user
Emmanuel, Slinger. "FACTORS INFLUENCING THE ADOPTION AND USE OF MOBILE APPLICATIONS FOR MICRO-ENTERPRISE OPERATIONS IN SOUTH AFRICA." University of the Western Cape, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/11394/7805.
Повний текст джерелаThe micro-enterprise sector, although associated with mostly informal businesses, shows promise of potential and transitioning to more formal businesses. With this in mind, the South African government recognizes that prioritized sectorial development is needed to stimulate growth particularly in the micro-enterprise sector. Considering that evidence reveals growth and development in small business practices being closely related to the use of different forms of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs), if and when strategically applied. Therefore recognizing the importance of ICTs the South African government has embarked on various technology related initiatives to facilitate needed growth and development. Despite this, entrepreneurs in the micro-enterprise sector demonstrate a low uptake of ICTs for their business operations, including the use of mobile technologies which are the most common form of ICTs available to micro- entrepreneurs. Many previous studies have investigated the adoption and use of mobile technologies in the microenterprise sector, but despite this a low uptake of mobile technologies still exists. For this reason, this study investigates and empirically determines the factors influencing the adoption and use of mobile applications for micro-enterprise operations in South Africa, using the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) model as a lens. The research population comprised a group of micro-entrepreneurs who all are users of a common mobile application (mentorship-movement application). The main aim of the investigation was to determine (i) the factors influencing the adoption and use of mobile applications for micro- enterprise operation, (ii) if the experience gained and their satisfaction associated with using the mentorship-movement application will influence their behavioural intention to use other mobile applications for business. The study was conducted objectively and used hypothesis testing as the means of investigation. Data was collected through the use of a survey questionnaire. The findings of the study indicate that ii | P a g e performance expectancy and effort expectancy positively influences the micro-entrepreneurs behavioural intention to adopt and use mobile applications for micro-enterprise operations. The findings also observed that social influence has no impact on the micro- entrepreneurs’ behavioural intention to adopt and use mobile applications for business. Facilitating conditions and behavioural intention were found to positively influence the use behaviour of the micro-entrepreneurs when it comes to adoption and use of mobile applications for business. Moreover, the findings confirmed that experience and satisfaction in using one mobile application does not influence the behavioural intention of the micro-entrepreneurs to use other mobile applications for business. The factors which have been found to bear influence on the adoption and use of mobile applications amongst micro-entrepreneurs in South Africa have implications for both policy and practice. In particular, the findings of this study may be used to inform the design of the various programmatic interventions which seek to improve outcomes of the micro-entrepreneur sector. This includes interventions by the Department of Small Business Development and that of the Small Enterprise Development Agency (SEDA).

Повний текст джерелаThe research conducted as part of our thesis aims at looking into the construction of the utterance of male homosexuality putting forward comparative analysis of recent times. Our concern is communication medium (media environment and digital technologies) as well as the different forms of speaking. Our thesis is organized around three parts. The first part consists in highlighting the context and the characteristics about telling homosexuality. We will suggest to revisit Michel Foucault’s work (through his work La volonté de savoir – The will to know) in order to study the implementation of the discourse about sex and then the construction of sexualities. It is also a question of identifying the variations of the self-ascription from the logic of secret to a protest or even subversive form of logic through different times, with the evocation of the place and the different aspects of “coming out”. In a second part, we will explain the different legacies of the ways to express homosexuality. We will then mention the different ways to represent male homosexuality in films, television and in web series through a linear and genealogical basis from the 1930’s until today. We will next review the practice of cruising according to open or closed areas: this will lead us to question the existence of the liberation of expressive forms. Finally, in a third and last part, we will put forward, from the mobile phone application Grindr, the identification of the different features of the cruiser as well as his roaming in a geo-tracking world. We will discuss more precisely the status and the relationship to image, the identification of the different types of views organized through the applications and the stakes and consequences as part of the utterance of homosexuality

Повний текст джерелаThe generalization of the use of the mobile phone in Africa and Gabon in specific is a reality. It is a behavior with no precedent. It thus raises the question of information technologies and new forms of communication. This in turn invokes the issue of "information era". In this effervescence for mobile telephony, many questions deserve to be posed. Undoubtedly the most significant one is: why this passion? With a critical analysis of this question on realizes that currently this technological developpement doesn't have any importance at least from an economic standpoint. Despite the lack of economic evolution, there is an increasing usage of mobile pones in Gabon. Thus we treat people' attachment to the mobile phones as a need of communication. That being the lesson which one can learn from the generalized establishment of the mobile phones in Africa and in Gabon in particular, one can look at mobile phone usage in terms of interpersonal relations and social relations

Повний текст джерелаThe objective of this thesis is to capture the potential of information and communication technologies (ICTs), specifically mobile phones in Africa to alleviate the living conditions and empower households in rural areas, particularly in Sub-SaharaAfrica through information dissemination, rent redistribution, and financial inclusiveness. As the last developed continent, Africa suffers from poverty, lack of essential infrastructure, famine problems, the highest illiteracy rates, and limited access to financial services, so International organizations such as the World Bank argues that the expansion of mobile telephony adoption represents an opportunity to overcome some of Africa’s obstacles through innovative uses in the rural world, which suffers more from physical barriers. We focus on assessing the impact of the innovative uses of mobile phone services in the agricultural sector where I will draw conclusions on mobile phone services’ benefits, quantify them, and advise public and private authorities and organizations to set up suitable services to the populations’ needs

Повний текст джерелаIn recent years, progress made in the field of information and communication technologies (ICT) has stimulated social and economic globalization, leading to the development of an information society. Widespread campaigns around that society advocated the need and even the urgency for African countries to use these technologies to reach the expected level of development of which the nation Mali is not an exception. In that area telecommunications and affiliated strategies oriented towards universal access play an important role. However, technological advances are involved in the atomization of society especially broadening the gap between men and women. Moreover, stakeholders are concerned by this situation, especially since, according to the United Nations, the lack of access to ICTs is the third crucial challenge for women after poverty and violence. Therefore, the consideration of gender issues and women integration in ICTs and development become more important despite the constraints and the gap between what is said and what is done. This work focuses on issues that include the use of technologies such as mobile phones by Malian women in an environment whereby tradition and modernity tackle each other. In other words, this study analyses how mobile phones, the new practices and transformations it brings in, fit in the daily life of Malian business women

The movement of people and vehicles may be sensed and recorded, thus producing large volumes of mobility data. The state-of-the-art database management systems fail to handle such complex data and their processing. This thesis addresses the problem of managing mobile location sensor data. We analyze the limitations of existing work in modeling, querying and indexing moving objects with sensors on road networks. Then, we propose new solutions to deal with these limitations. The main contributions of the thesis are a data model and a query language for moving sensor data, and an access method for in-network trajectories of moving objects. We have implemented these proposals as a spatio-temporal database management system extension and evaluated them

Повний текст джерелаThis thesis is devoted to the study of the support of multicast communication with Mobile IP receivers and senders. The purpose is to provide continuous and optimal multicast delivery to multicast members that change regularly their point of attachment from one IP network to another. On one hand, the receiver mobility introduces new issues conceming the question of membership latency, multicast session interruption, packet loss and optimal routing. On the other hand, the source mobility must be considered because it raises a number of new challenges such as source identification, reconstruction of the multicast tree and session interruption due to the handover. Our first contribution is the definition of a taxonomy that is used to describe the main challenges of mobile multicast receivers and mobile multicast sources and the comparison of existing solutions. Our second contribution is the proposition of two solutions to enhance the support of mobile receivers. The first solution optimizes the Mobile IP signalling by avoiding unnecessary signalling traffic between mobile receiver and multicast source induced by binding update mechanism. The second solution introduces a new multicast proxy entity in Mobile IP home networks to optimize the multicast delivery path between mobile receivers and their correspondent home agents. Finally, we propose a new solution to handle transparently source mobility by reducing the multicast routing state change and avoiding the reconstruction of the multicast delivery tree. The performance of our solutions is evaluated by simulation. We conclude this dissertation with a prospective architecture for Mobile IP that uses multiple home agents and a number of future works identified during this study

To transmit data, Power Line Communication (PLC) technologies present an advantage in this context. In fact, it enables a superposition of High Frequency (HF) signals on electrical signal 50/60 Hz. However, electric networks have not been developed to this application because of difficult propagation conditions. This research work makes a contribution to develop a simulation platform in objective to transmit data to 1 MHz. In first time, each network element is studied singly and in second time, together, to estimate "Outdoor PLC" transmission performance. The first element studied is the networks variation in function of frequency and time. Several 24h disturbance measurements on LV customers are presented. The second element is the transformers which established connection between Medium Voltage (MV) and Low Voltage (LV). The proposed modeling method is based on a "lumped model" and a "black box model". These models are applied to a 100 kVA H61 transformer most commonly used by French distribution system operator in rural and suburban networks. The third element is the power line used in MV and LV networks. The proposed modeling method is based on a "cascaded model" from the theory of transmission line. This model is applied to one power line used in LV underground network. Each model is obtained from various impedance measurements. To complete, an introductory study on mobile radio communication is performed to remote network distribution

Are mobile phone devices resulting from a culture from globalization? These two starting questions can be summarized by another: which is the reason of the success of cellular in spite of antagonisms and the cultural affiliations? It results from the fast report that we will specify later on, wl1o makes that more than three huma11 out of four on the world are mobile phone users. This product became totally global; either from West to East or from the South in North. The initial vision of technology is different from the current use. Adoption of innovation models are called into question and are characterized well by the relative advantage, compatibility complexity, experimentability, observability. The ambivalence of marketing concept in the case of the mobiles is an element specified in this thesis in parallel with the consumer behavior and its levels: needs, desires, waitings, requests. The cellular one creates new standards material, spiritual, intellectual and emotional such as for example the dependence. This object becomes, through the Agamben meaning, located inside globalization. It defines new behaviors, new uses and new power relations. The mobile phone is an element of the identity of each user

Повний текст джерелаENGLISH ABSTRACT: The high penetration rate of mobile devices all over the world, and especially in South Africa, has significantly increased the relevance of Mobile Assisted Language Learning (MALL). The objective of this study is to ascertain the viability of incorporating MALL technology to enhance the language learning experience of South African university students who are studying a foreign language. The students enrolled for the beginners’ German course at Stellenbosch University served as participants in this study, and surveys and interviews were used to establish their exposure to mobile devices, as well as their experiences in relation to the incorporation of Short Messages Service (SMS) into their German course. The results indicate that although the vast majority of students are mobile device owners, only a few students will embrace the idea of using these devices to improve their language skills without any incentive. Without constant motivation and encouragement to use mobile technologies, and the willingness from everybody involved in both teaching and learning a foreign language, mobile technology as a support structure cannot be implemented successfully.

Fog computing is a promising approach in the context of the Internet of Things (IoT) as it provides functionality and resources at the edge of the network, closer to end users. This thesis studies the performance of fog computing in the context of latency sensitive IoT applications. The first issue addressed is the mathematical modeling of an IoT-fogcloud system, and the performance metrics of the system in terms of energy consumed and latency. This modeling will then allow us to propose various effective strategies for content distribution and resource allocation in the fog and the cloud. The second issue addressed in this thesis concerns the distribution of content and object data in fog / cloud systems. In order to simultaneously optimize offloading and system resource allocation decisions, we distinguish between two types of IoT applications: (1) IoT applications with static content or with infrequent updates; and (2) IoT applications with dynamic content. For each type of application, we study the problem of offloading IoT requests in the fog. We focus on load balancing issues to minimize latency and the total power consumed by the system

Повний текст джерелаIn the post-industrial era, of the knowledge economy and knowledge; socio-economic activity in Africa is characterized by the informal sector in which the craft plays a meaningful role. Can craftsmen which activity is essentially manual, adapt themselves in new tools of modern communication? What do they use ICTs including mobile phones and the Internet? What representations do they have of these tools? Are they mere consumers of ICTs or can they play an important role in the design of communication tools adapted to their socio-economic environment? This research attempts to answer these questions through a study of practices of mobile phones and the Internet with two types of craftspeople: those common goods producers, mainly located in urban areas and those working in the mine, largely located in rural regions, where problems of infrastructure shortages are most critical. The main theoretical sources are those of sociology and anthropology uses of technology. Emphasizing a constructivist approach and having as main hypothesis adaptability of ICTs to crafts and craftsmen to ICTs, this discussion explores the uses of mobile phones and the Internet by the craftsmen, and their possible contributions to the design ICTs to meet their needs. Of socio-demographic variables crossed with uses of the functionality of mobile phone and Internet, appear fun, utility, and craft-oriented development practices. The contribution of our research in information and communication sciences is in the update of flows and communication needs in the craft sector, real, imagined, and desired uses of ICTs, including mobile phone and Internet, that can be integrated into the design of communication tools

Повний текст джерелаThe research focuses on the acceptance of new technologies within the telecommunications industry. The study examines three models namely Innovation theory, Theory of Reason Action (TRA), and Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). This study explores the technology acceptance models in order to explain why certain monitoring officers at ICASA would prefer specific technologies over others. Models of interest could be the innovation theory, TRA and TAM. After reviewing both models, the author will examine the TAM in detail as a model of interest in this study. In turn, this model is expected to assist us to understand why monitoring officer's at ICASA would prefer a particular frequency monitoring technology over the other.
