The aim of this project is to develop an android application for managing and organizing activities of various departments in ThrockMorton building at K-State. Mobile application development is a growing trend in computer industry. With the advancements in mobile technologies and efficient 3G and 4G wireless communications, a number of desktop applications are now becoming available as mobile applications. Android has the leading market share in the entire smart phone OS available. It gives lot of space for creative development as it is open source. There are various discussion forums and official android development support websites that encourage mobile and tablet application development. The ThrockMobile application provides many features for managing inventory at ThrockMorton in Kansas State University. The features include scanning a barcode of an asset and displaying its details and can even edit any of the fields if needed. The access to this application is restricted to only those devices whose device id is existing in the database. One can request access to the application through an email client integrated with the application. Look up feature lets you look up for a user, room, ip-address and asset. Preferences module lets you enter the details of the server from which data is to be requested. This application has been tested on android devices of varying screen sizes and android OS versions. The application serves requests at an average rate of 1.5sec/request, which is above the industry average time. I mentioned in detail the reason for the above performance average times and as future enhancements I have discussed the possible solutions.

Tutorials and Quiz Android Mobile application is an application which gives you brief tutorials on various programming languages and technologies to the user who has installed this application. It gives video tutorials and training on different technologies. The mobile application also contains sample code, interview questions, and answers. This application also conducts a quiz to the user who is interested in a particular technology for checking their knowledge on the subject. It has different levels like Basic Level and Advanced Level quiz. This application conducts a quiz in the form of multiple choice questions. After the completion of the quiz the application generates reports based on the quiz conducted. The user can also test their knowledge on those technologies based on a timed quiz, we can include the above technology questions in this application. We can give a time frame for each question and all the questions are to be answered in that specified time period. Say for example we can give 20 seconds to answer a question. If the user gives an incorrect answer, will be exited out of the quiz.

Detta projekt går ut på att skapa en stabil och användbar mobilapplikation utvecklad i programspråket Java. Syftet är att underlätta åtkomsten och kommunikationen mellan Studentportalen och studenterna. Slutprodukten är Mittuniversitetets inofficiella applikation, kallad Mittuniversitetets Android-app. som begränsas i första hand till enheter med operativsystemet Android. Genom undersökningar, gjorda via både Mittuniversitetets studentportal i form av en enkät och fysiskt på Mittuniversitetet campus Sundsvall i form av muntliga intervjuer, utreds vilka områden studenterna helst vill ha i applikationen och det är utefter dessa som applikationen utformas. Applikationen betraktas som färdig när studenterna bl.a. kommer åt sina uppgifter och får dessa presenterade på ett stilrent sätt. Tre olika lösningsalternativ ges men jämförelser av för- och nackdelar leder till att endast ”direktanslutning som lösning” genomförs i detta projekt. För att ge läsaren en grund för fortsatt förståelse av rapporten beskrivs vissa delar närmare i rapporten. Rapporten visar även att åtkomsten till Studentportalen effektiviserats till 5 skärmtryck genom Mittuniversitetets applikation från tidigare 24 skärm-tryck genom mobiltelefonens egna webbläsare. Samtliga mål i projektet anses vara uppfyllda och visas som skärmdumpar i rapporten. Avslutningsvis framgår även förslag för vidareutveckling av applikationen.
This project is made for creating a stabil and useful mobile application developed in Java. The purpose of this project is to make the access and communication easier between the student and the student portal. The product of this project is the unofficial app of Mid Sweden University, called Mittuniversitetets Android-app, that in first hand is limited to Android-devices. By doing research, both by letting students answer a survey online on Mid Sweden University's student portal and by asking student physically at Mid Sweden University campus Sundsvall, the investigation tells which parts of the student portal students would like to have in the mobile application and it is according to those answers that the direction of the application has been developed. The product, which is the application, is considered complete when the students are able to for exempel reach their information and get the information presented in a good way. Three different suggestions for a solution is given and by comparing the benefits of those only one solution is chosen. The solution chosen is ”direct-connection as solution”. To be able to give the reader better basical and understandable knowledge some parts are explained in more detail in this report. The report also shows that the access to the student portal is more effective now that only 5 taps are required by using the Mid Sweden University application to get a students information instead of 24 taps by using the web-browser on the cellphone. All goals in this thesis is considered accomplished and screenshots shows this in the report. Finally there is also suggestions for some future works given in this report.

It also proposes an authentication model for RESTful applications. The master’s thesis is completed at the company Inspectera HK AB in Norrköping, Sweden. The developed application is called the “Mobile version of Inspectera Online.”

Mobile application development is one of the recent trends in computing Industry. Among several existing platforms for mobile, Android is one of the largest platforms in the world that run in several smart phones and tablets from various manufacturers like Google, Motorola, Samsung, HTC etc. Android number game is a simple game application in android targeting the school children to train their mathematical skills and help them to think. The application presents a graphical user interface with several colored bubble balls moving in random directions each with a number on it. The numbers are generated randomly within a specified range. The application allows the user to burst a moving bubble by touching it. The user’s goal is to burst all the bubbles in the ascending order of numbers on them. The application contains multiple levels and the number of bubbles increase as the levels increase. Also, the complexity of the set of numbers on the bubbles increases with increasing levels. Three lives are given to clear all the levels of the game and scores are computed for every correct shot on the ball. Bonus points are also added for clearing every level. The application maintains the top 10 players with their scores.

Mobile applications play an important role in the dissemination of computing and information resources. They are often used in domains such as mobile banking, e-commerce, and health monitoring. Cost-effective testing techniques in these domains are critical. This dissertation contributes novel techniques for automatic construction of mobile application test suites. In particular, this work provides solutions that focus on the prohibitively large number of possible event sequences that must be sampled in GUI-based mobile applications. This work makes three major contributions: (1) an automated GUI testing tool, Autodroid, that implements a novel online approach to automatic construction of Android application test suites (2) probabilistic and combinatorial-based algorithms that systematically sample the input space of Android applications to generate test suites with GUI/context events and (3) empirical studies to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of our techniques on real-world Android applications. Our experiments show that our techniques achieve better code coverage and event coverage compared to random test generation. We demonstrate that our techniques are useful for automatic construction of Android application test suites in the absence of source code and preexisting abstract models of an Application Under Test (AUT). The insights derived from our empirical studies provide guidance to researchers and practitioners involved in the development of automated GUI testing tools for Android applications.

The aim of the project is to develop an Android application that lets its users to send notifications in case of an emergency or a panic situation. The users can send multiple text messages and emails on the press of a single button. The phone numbers, email ids and the contents of the text and email messages can be set from within the application. The text messages and emails sent, along with the content, also have the last known location of the user. This is very helpful in tracking the whereabouts of the person. The user can also call 911 directly from within the application, if the nature of the situation demands it. Additionally the user of the application may allow the app to track their location. If this option is selected, the application fetches the device’s location at about every 15 minutes and stores it in a database. This information is very useful and can be used in a variety of ways. One such use of the location data is from within the Android app where the user can view a map that shows their location history over a period of time for a particular day.

The main subject of this thesis is the security of Android platform mobile devices. The goal of the thesis is to design and develop an application that will check given devices from the security point of view and to check the security of applications developed as the subject of theses created in the last few years at the University of Economics. In the first part of thesis there is an analysis of ways to secure the Android platform devices and applications and ways to attack them. In recent years, mobile devices have played a significant role in daily life. As a result, Mobile Applications have become very popular. An increasing number of people are using mobile applications to handle an increasing number of personal tasks, as well as for amusement. To date, there are thousands of mobile applications available for a variety of purposes. However, there are very few specifically designed for local church use. Mobile applications are potentially more convenient and easier to operate than normal website for parishioners. Designing and implementing a mobile application for Crest Community Church, in Riverside, based on Android Developer Tools (ADT) and Android Software Development Kit (Android SDK) is this project’s primary objective. The objective of this project is to provide a communications platform where members of Crest Community Church can share news, discuss coming church events, promote and enhance the connectivity of this worship community, and provide mobile access to information not available on their present systems. A distinct feature of this project allows for communication between mobile application and webserver by creating a HTTP URL Connection. As a result, church members can publish news and events in a discussion forum as well as a dialog with other church members in a near real time format. The Crest users can also indicate that posted prayer request has been prayed for. In addition, this new application displays general church information, and provides the address and driving direction for potential visitors. Church members can also check the church’s calendar of events, special meetings and information about the Passion Center for Children ministry. This project has the ability to store and track pertinent information about each user, the content of all discussions, and retains member’s key contact data. This project successfully implemented a church mobile application. It demonstrated that a tailored mobile application can enhance the sense of community via internet for this congregation. It feather shows that mobile applications can greatly assist churches in community with members as well as visitors. The application also expanded the internet footprint of Crest Community Church, and offers other churches an avenue to improve their connectivity for the future.

Now a days, people are more inclined towards owning a smart phone. In such a scenario, mobile application development is one of most sought after platforms. Android is one of the largest platforms that run in most smart phones from manufacturers like Samsung, HTC etc. ToGo Cabs is an Android phone cab reservation application which targets the residents of the state of Kansas. While some cab services boast about their cab being just a call away, some other taxi services boast about the punctuality of their service. Unfortunately, at the end of the day, the passengers are just tired of waiting at different locations for the cab that they have just reserved to pick them up and take them home. What we need is a reliable mobile application which reserves a cab for us from a specific place at a certain time and which tells its users the status of the cab in order to keep them from waiting for long hours. ToGo Cabs serves just that purpose. ToGo Cabs allows the users to get a cab from any location in the state of Kansas, even if they seem to be lost. One does not have to spend hours on phone with the cab services to tell them where exactly you are located currently. The Global Positioning System takes care of the current location for the users. This application shows the route to the user, which the cab would take to reach to the destination. Once a user reserves a cab, he is acknowledged with a confirmation number which he can further use to check the cab status. The application provides the user the facility to e-mail or text his confirmation number. The application can also set a reminder notification just 15 minutes before the cab pick-up. The user can also check all the trips that he has made so far, from the application.

The purpose of the project is to develop an Android application that is capable of detecting possible falls for the elderly. With the advancement of wireless communications, the world has become smarter and there has been increase in use of smart phones. Android, being an open source platform has made it simple for every individual to develop their own applications, which in turn can be used on Android devices. Falls among the elderly are a serious concern for both families as well as medical professionals, since falls are considered to be the eighth leading cause of death in the United States. Untreated fall injuries in adults 65 or older can result in serious risks and health complications, since 20% of falls require immediate medical attention and about one-tenth of the falls result in fractures. Thus, as mentioned, fall detection is a critical event requiring quick and accurate response, especially for elderly people living by themselves. This is the motivation behind developing an elderly support, which detects a fall and alerts the caretaker regarding the information. The elderly support is about tracking the person and notifying the caretaker if there is an occurrence. One of the main features of this Android application is that it notifies the caretaker with alert messages which contain all the necessary information. The alert messages contain useful information about the people in danger, such as his/her geo location and also corresponding directions on a map. In occasions of false alerts, the supervised person is given the ability to estimate the value of importance of a possible alert and to stop it before proceeding with further steps. This project is geared towards supporting the elderly. The mobile application is capable of detecting possible falls and through a user-friendly interface that can be used to alert relatives, doctors, and other people who take care of the elderly.

There has been an enormous growth in the usage of smartphones in recent times. Smartphones are not limited to communication purposes. It has various applications designed as per the daily requirements of humans such as web-searching, online shopping, bank transactions, games, etc. With the increase in the usage of the smartphone, the more useful information is captured and stored by it, which raises the question of security. The goal of this research is to develop two android applications. One is a sensor detector application and the second is a screen lock application. The first application will help the user to identify all the hidden sensors and working sensors on the mobile phone. This application even describes the features and usage of every sensor in detail. Using a graphical description of each sensor which depicts the behaviour of each sensor as per environment/movement. The second application is designed using a combination of two sensors. Screen lock applications contain two main factors. One is to work properly in all cases and efficiently do the functions that are required to do. The second is to maintain a smooth inner system interaction because in addition to locking the screen this application should make sure to hide the display of all the other applications without closing the process of these applications. With the increase in the usage of the smartphone, it becomes difficult for older generations to memorize the security pattern techniques and use them. This thesis develops a simple technique in the mobile authentication android application. The thesis is developed on the Android studio platform. The background functionality of the app is coded in java using android SDK tool and frontend of the application is designed using XML files. The GENYMOTION emulator and a mobile phone are used to test the output.

A mobile application has been developed to be used for assistance in crisis scenarios. To assure the application is dependable enough to be used in such scenarios, the application was put under test. This thesis investigates different approaches to functional testing and security testing. Five common methods of generating test cases for functional testing have been identified and four were applied on the application. The coverage achieved for each method was measured and compared. For this specific application under test, test cases from a method called decision table-testing scored the highest code coverage. 9 bugs related to functionality were identified. Fuzz testing is a simple security testing technique for efficiently finding security flaws, and was applied for security testing of our application. During the fuzz test, system security properties were breached. An unauthorized user could read and alter asset data, and it also affected the system's availability. Our overall conclusion was that with more time, creating functional tests for smaller components of the application might have been more effective in finding faults and achieving coverage.

This report describes a bachelor thesis in computer science performed at the system department within the product development unit for GSM (Global System for Mobile communication) at Ericsson in Linköping.GSM can be considered a mature technology but it is still updated with new features on a regular basis. This requires that the technology also continuously is being tested. One technique that is used to perform quality tests is called PESQ (Perceptual Evaluation of Speech Quality). PESQ is a standardized algorithm to perform speech quality tests; it gives a score based on how a human would percept speech quality.The purpose of this thesis was to enhance the speech quality analysis process used when testing the GSM network. One goal was to analyze if it was possible to record and inject sound into a phone call and verify the possibility to execute the PESQ algorithm using a smartphone. Another goal was to develop a smartphone application to perform the described tasks.In order to do so an application for Android was developed. The development process included an investigation whether the Android platform supplies the functionality required. The investiga-tion showed that no general solution for recording and injecting audio into a phone call could be found. Recording was possible on some smartphones, but the characteristics of the recorded audio were not as desired. No solution for injecting audio into a phone call could be found for any of the tested smartphones.However, even though no solution for recording and injecting was found, an application was developed. The application was decided to be more of a proof of concept on how an application of this kind would work. It would also be a good foundation for future development. Suggested future work in order to integrate the application into the existing testing environment is to find alternative solutions for recording and injecting, maybe with the help of smartphone manu-facturers.

A music player mobile application for Android is developed along with cloud server using Google’s App Engine and Firebase. This music player application provides various ways of navigating to an audio file and different music visualizer options. What’s more, the application also provides three major features: 1 user sign in and sign out, 2 display the most popular songs based on input, 3 users can submit comments and suggestions. These features are implemented by utilizing cloud services of Google’s App Engine and Firebase. Specifically, an application running on App Engine plays as a server’s role to verify user sign in. It also runs App Engine MapReduce jobs to consume large data stored in Google Cloud Storage and serves relatively small result about popular songs for the app. In addition, user’s comments and suggestions are automatically synchronized with Firebase which makes modifying and analyzing synchronized data really convenient.

Information-Centric Networking (ICN) is a new research area concerning creating a new network architecture that would be more suitable for both current and the future's network. The MOSES (Mobile Opportunistic Services for Experience Sharing) project is part of this development. The project works with the development and demonstration of the Network of Information (NetInf) protocol, which is an implementation of the ICN concept. This Master’s thesis project is part of the MOSES project and aims to assist the MOSES project with the demonstration of a mobile opportunistic sharing concept based on the NetInf protocol. Demonstrating the MOSES concept in practice requires deep understanding of networking, localization, transport, and dissemination of digital content in an ad hoc network. This implementation requires an analysis of the previous work, development of new functionalities, and finally an analysis of a series of controlled experiments. This Master’s thesis project has designed, implemented, and evaluated an Android application within the MOSES framework by using the previously developed NetInf Android library. This prototype is used to demonstrate how mobile Android users can opportunistically share and disseminate content based on their location using the MOSES/ICN concept. The functionality and efficiency of the prototype Android application built during this thesis project has been analyzed and evaluated by conducting a series of controlled experiments under the supervision of MOSES researchers. The results of these controlled experiments has provided insight for MOSES researchers as well as explored the concept of using ICN (NetInf) for opportunistic content distribution. The experiment results aim at assisting MOSES researchers to extend and further develop the prototype application and the involved algorithms to create a fully functional mobile application for experience sharing services tailored to large-scale events.

Image enhancement improves an image appearance by increasing dominance of some features or by decreasing ambiguity between different regions of the image. Image enhancement techniques have been widely used in many applications of image processing where the subjective quality of images is important for human interpretation. In many cases, the images have lack of clarity and have some effects on images due to fog, low light and other daylight effects exist. So, the images which have these scenarios should be enhanced and made clear to recognize the objects clearly. Histogram-based image enhancement technique is mainly based on equalizing the histogram of the image and increasing the dynamic range corresponding to the image. The Histogram equalization algorithm was performed and tested using different images facing the low light, fog images and colour contrast and succeeded in obtaining enhanced images. This technique is implemented by averaging the histogram values as the probability density function. Initially, we have worked with the MATLAB code on Histogram Equalization and made changes to implement an Application Program Interface i.e., API using Xamarin software. The mobile application developed using Xamarin software works efficiently and has less execution time when compared to the application developed in Android Studio. Debugging of the application is successfully done in both Android and IOS versions. The focus of this thesis is to develop a mobile application on Image enhancement using Xamarin on low light, foggy images.

Geographic Information System (GIS) is a technology that can help collect, edit, store, manage, transform, analyze and represent data. This research aimed to show how mobile GIS application can  be designed, developed and applied to electric field work. An Android mobile application, which had been integrated with GIS was developed in Java. The prototype was tested and evaluated by employees of China Southern Power Grid (CSG). The resulting mobile application had three important features and functionalities: map view, location and electrical object querying, and attribute viewing and editing. According to the results of the user testing, the advantages of the application were its improved performance as brought about by the different scales used in the maps, its clear layout, and the speed of completing the query tasks. The disadvantages, on the other hand, were restrictions in the data types used and the query window. The study showed that with wireless communication, GPS and Location-based (LBS) supplements, electric utilities can benefit from this mobile GIS application in the following aspects: 1) eliminate the obstacles of going out in the field; 2) increase the flexibility of field work by faster access to data; 3) increase the accuracy and efficiency of field workers by dealing with the querying and editing task, and field mapping on a portable devices in real time. According to these aspects, electric field work can easily be enhanced by saving time, resources, and costs.

BankID is the leading electronic identificationsystem in Sweden which is used by around 5 million people in a variety ofpublic and private services. BankID allows users to securely authenticate themselvesand digitally sign important documents and transactions over the internet.In 2011, BankID Security App was launched to be used in mobile smartphones and tablet computers. In this paper, different components of the PublicKey Infrastructure (PKI) which is a cryptographic technique that enables usersto safely communicate over the insecure internet has been studied in detail. Furthermore,a test BankID-integrated PhoneGap based app on the Android platformis implemented and a performance evaluation and security analysis wereperformed. The test implementation of the BankID-integrated app on theAndroid platform provides user authentication and digital signing functions.The implemented backend system consists of a server with digital certificateand a database. The performance test emphasizes on the measurement of the accesstime between the components of the system and usability of the application.Access time measurement includes a reasonable amount of time in whichthe user is able to perform different activities in the system. In usability assessmentnumber of actions to perform a certain task and the ease of the user interfacehas been taken into consideration. The security analysis aims to identifypotential security flaws in the system and discuss possible solutions. The potentialsecurity risks we identified during the implementation of the system are theman-in-the-middle-attack, the Heartbleed bug, losing the mobile device andphysical access to the backend system. The potential security risks in the systemwere examined with regard to severity and probability of occurrence. Finally,the thesis project has been discussed in terms of the future work and system expansions.The result of the thesis will be used as a base in production developmentby Dewire, the company for which the thesis work has been conducted.

I den här rapporten genomförs en litteraturstudie för att ta fram en Utvecklingsprocess för utveckling av en business-to-businessinriktad mobilapplikation. Syftet med Utvecklingsprocessen är att den ska kunna användas som ett hjälpmedel under utvecklandet. Processen riktar sig framförallt till studenter och företag som inte har någon erfarenhet av att utveckla business-to-businessinriktade mobilapplikationer. Denna process tillämpas sedan praktiskt genom att ta fram en idé till en applikation. Detta för att kunna utvärdera processen med avseende på fyra utvärderingskriterier: Användarvänlighet, Inblick i slutanvändarens behov och problem, fasernas nödvändighet och om den Uppfyller sina syften. Resultatet visar att Utvecklingsprocessen tar upp viktiga aspekter vid utveckling av en mobilapplikation. Det är dock viktigt att hela tiden följa upp arbetet och återkoppla till processen. Detta för att uppdatera och förbättra mobilapplikationen då utvecklaren med stor sannolikhet kommer hitta nya problem och bättre lösningar under utvecklingens gång. Rapporten rekommenderar slutligen att utvecklaren anpassar Utvecklingsprocessen efter sina egna förutsättningar för att uppnå bästa resultat.

Negli ultimi anni si ha avuto modo di assistere alle conseguenze spiacievoli causate dalla raccolta di dati e metadata generati dagli utenti di internet e smartphone. Dopo una panoramica dei processi di controllo che vengono eseguiti per definire un'app sicura e le tecnologie addottate in contesti aziendali per la protezione dei propri dati si analizzano ulteriori criteri orientati alla privacy e alla trasparenza delle software house. Per l'implementazione dell'applicazione Android vengono impiegate tecniche di language model per la valutazione dei permessi delle app installate, che andranno confrontati con quelli presenti in una base di dati che raccoglie esempi già analizzati di applicazioni Android, valutate con ausilio di piattaforme di audit. En server med tillhörande databas kommunicerar med applikationen som klient. De båda utgör tillsammans helheten i ett system designat för bokningsbolaget Current and Able, verksamt i Sverige, som önskar presentera sitt utbud av exklusiva varor och tjänster direkt till fans av bolagets artister.   I projektet avhandlas grundläggande klasser och komponenter för utveckling av applikationer till Android och hur de bäst samverkar för att optimera användandet av resurser. Java användes huvudsakligen som programmeringsspråk. På serversidan utvecklades ett gränssnitt i PHP mot en MySQL databashanterare.
This study describes the development of an application for the operating system Android. We consider the developing of the application in relation to a good user experience and the managing of resources on a smaller device. A server with an appurtenant database communicates with the application as a client. Together they constitute a unity in a system designed to serve Current and Able, a managing and booking music agency in Sweden, who whishes to offer their supply of goods and services to the fans of their related artists.   In this project we deal with basic classes and components regarding development of Android applications and how they interact to achieve the best possible performance when using system resources. Java was the main programming language used. On the server side we developed a graphical user interface in PHP, targeting a MySQL database management system.

Кваліфікаційна робота включає пояснювальну записку (51с., 21 рис., 3 додатки). Об’єкт розробки – мобільний Android-додаток для планування та контролю процесу лікування пацієнтів ветеринарної клініки. Мета проєкту – підвищення ефективності роботи спеціалістів ветеринарної клініки. Розроблений додаток дозволяє: - здійснювати авторизацію спеціалістів ветеринарної клініки з розподілом прав доступу; - створювати і підтримувати медичні картки пацієнтів; - планувати процес лікування пацієнтів; - визначати дозування лікарських препаратів; - контролювати стан пацієнтів за показниками. В процесі розробки використано мова програмування Kotlin, інструменти середовища розробки Android Studio. Для збереження даних використано Firebase Realtime Database. В ході виконання дипломного проєкту: - проведено аналіз існуючих програмних рішень для спеціалістів у галузі ветеринарії; - проведено аналіз засобів створення мобільних Android-додатків; - розроблено мобільний Android-додаток. Використання додатку дозволить підвищити ефективність роботи ветеринарних спеціалістів завдяки покращенню взаємодії між лікарями та оперативному відслідковуванні стану пацієнтів.
Qualification work includes explanation note (51 pages, 21 drawings, 3 attachments). The object of development is mobile Android application for planning and control of the treatment process of veterinary clinic patients. The purpose of project is increasing the work efficiency of veterinary clinic’s specialists. Developed application enables: - to carry out authorization of specialists of veterinary clinic with distribution of access rights; - to create and support medical cards of patients; - to plan patient’s treatment; - to determine the dosage of medical drugs; - to control the condition of patients by indicators. In the development process has been used programming language Kotlin, development environment Android Studio tools. For data saving has been used Firebase Realtime Database. During the development of the diploma project: - the analysis of existing software solutions for specialists in the field of veterinary medicine was carried out; - the analysis of the ways of creating mobile Android applications was carried out; - the mobile Android application was developed. Using of application will allow to increase the work efficiency of veterinary specialists due to improving interaction between doctors and fast monitoring of patients’ condition.

Mobile and web application security, particularly concerning the area of data privacy, has received much attention from the public in recent years. Most applications are installed without disclosing full information to users and clearly stating what they have access to. This often raises concerns when users become aware of unnecessary information being collected or stored. Unfortunately, most users have little to no technical knowledge in regard to what permissions should be granted and can only rely on their intuition and past experiences to make relatively uninformed decisions. DroidNet, a crowdsource based Android recommendation tool and framework, is a proposed avenue for the technically incapable. DroidNet alleviates privacy concerns and presents users with permission recommendations of high confidence based on the decisions from expert users on the network who are using the same applications. The framework combines an interactive user interface, used for data collection and presenting permission recommendations to users, with a transitional Bayesian inference model and multiple algorithms used for rating users based on their respective expertise levels. As a result, the recommendations that are provided to users are based on aggregated expert responses and their confidence levels. This work presents the completed DroidNet project in its entirety, including the implementation of the application, algorithms, and user interface itself. Additionally, this thesis presents and utilizes a unique collection of real-world data from actual Android users. The primary goal of this work is to evaluate the effectiveness and accuracy of DroidNet's recommendations and to show that regular mobile device users can benefit from crowdsourcing.

With the increasing ubiquity of smartphones, tablets, and large pixel-rich displays, there are many exciting new possibilities for using these devices for collaborative work. While there already exist hardware and software that support communication and interaction between mobile devices and shared displays, application sharing in these scenarios is still limited and inflexible. We present a new method of application sharing which allows collaborators to download clips or snapshots of each other's applications. These snapshots can be used to re-launch and resume the shared application back to the state it was in when it was shared. We have built a system that supports sharing, annotating, organizing, and downloading these applications to and from a LearnSpace server. We have built an application framework which allows Android applications to be built for this system while only requiring minimal changes to the program. We also describe solutions for extending our solution to new types of collaborative displays and to other application platforms.

This report details the development of an application for personal safety for the Android operating system. Android is a relatively new platform, primarily used on mobile phones.

The purpose of the developed application is to give the user the possibility to easily and quickly alert a number of contacts by phone in case of emergencies, and to show the user’s location on a map. This is not only used during emergencies, but for other purposes as well – for example to monitor a jogging round.

The project was carried out in co-operation with the company D-Safety, the developer of the "SoftAlarm" – the product on which the developed application is based.


Denna rapport redogör för utvecklingen av en trygghetsapplikation för Android, en relativt ny plattform som till största delen används i mobiltelefoner. Denna applikation skulle innefatta möjligheten att via telefonen snabbt och enkelt manuellt larma ett antal kontakter vid farliga och oroande situationer. Utöver detta skulle applikationen även kunna visa användarens position på en karta i samband med detta, och även mer sport- och fritidsrelaterade ändamål såsom löprundor.

Arbetet utfördes åt D-Safety, och baseras på en applikation kallad SoftAlarm, som i skrivande stund är under utveckling hos företaget.

The number of mobile applications (i.e., apps) is rapidly growing, as the mobile computing becomes an integral part of the modern user experience. Malicious apps have infiltrated open marketplaces for mobile platforms. These malicious apps can exfiltrate user's private data, abuse of system resources, or disrupting regular services. Despite the recent advances on mobile security, the problem of detecting vulnerable and malicious mobile apps with high detection accuracy remains an open problem. In this thesis, we address the problem of Android security by presenting a new quantitative program analysis framework for security vetting of Android apps. We first introduce a highly accurate proactive detection solution for detecting individual malicious apps. Our approach enforces benign property as opposed of chasing malware signatures, and uses one complex feature rather than multi-feature as in the existing malware detection methods. In particular, we statically extract a data-flow feature on how user inputs trigger sensitive critical operations, a property referred to as the user-trigger dependence. This feature is extracted through nontrivial Android-specific static program analysis, which can be used in various quantitative analytical methods. Our evaluation on thousands of malicious apps and free popular apps gives a detection accuracy (2% false negative rate and false positive rate) that is better than, or at least competitive against, the state-of-the-art. Furthermore, our method discovers new malicious apps available in the Google Play store that have not been previously detected by anti-virus scanning tools. Second, we present a new app collusion detection approach and algorithms to analyze pairs or groups of communicating apps. App collusion is a new technique utilized by the attackers to evade standard detection. It is a new threat where two or more apps, appearing benign, communicate to perform malicious task. Most of the existing solutions assume the attack model of a stand-alone malicious app, and hence cannot detect app collusion. We first demonstrate experimental evidence on the technical challenges associated with detecting app collusion. Then, we address these challenges by introducing a scalable and an in-depth cross-app static flow analysis approach to identify the risk level associated with communicating apps. Our approach statically analyzes the sensitivity and the context of each inter-app communication with low analysis complexity, and defines fine-grained security policies for the inter-app communication risk detection. Our evaluation results on thousands of free popular apps indicate that our technique is effective. It generates four times fewer false positives compared to the state-of-the-art collusion-detection solution, enhancing the detection capability. The advantages of our inter-app communication analysis approach are the analysis scalability with low complexity, and the substantially improved detection accuracy compared to the state-of-the-art solution. These types of proactive defenses solutions allow defenders to stay proactive when defending against constantly evolving malware threats.
