Abstract This study aims to examine the effectiveness of a brain health education intervention addressing four areas: dementia false beliefs, Alzheimer’s disease knowledge, confidence in managing cognitive changes, and dementia worries among older adults. A quasi-experimental design was used with 6 groups of participants of older adults in Michigan who received the intervention over an 8-week period via Zoom. Participants (n=39) included male = 8, female = 31; Caucasian = 19, African American = 20 that were 60 or older (M = 71.74, SD = 6.80). Participants’ MoCA score ranged from 18 to 30 (M = 26.36, SD = 2.43). Paired t-tests were used to compare pre-post differences on four main areas. At post-test, participants reported decreased false beliefs to dementia (p<.001); increased Alzheimer’s disease knowledge (p=.003); and improved confidence in managing cognitive changes (p=.018) compared to their baseline scores. However, although the mean score of ‘dementia worries’ decreased on post-test (pre-test: 15.67, post-test: 14.53), it did not show statistical significance (p=.33). The 8-week brain health intervention showed a positive impact on lessening participants’ false beliefs on dementia, and enhancing knowledge of Alzheimer’s disease and confidence in managing their cognitive changes. The findings of this study laid the groundwork for future studies that use a larger sample size and randomized control trial design to test brain health education programs among older adults.

The main objectives of this article were to determine the demographic factors, the program related factors and the behavioral factors that influence Michigan Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program–Education outcomes. Secondarily, we sought to understand the trends and changes in Healthy Eating Index (HEI) scores across the differing baseline score groups. The data were collected by nutrition instructors in a pretest, posttest design to capture change in healthy eating habits through changes in HEI scores. The participants were all low-income program participants during the years of 2011 and 2012, living in Michigan. Findings show that eating habits improved most in households with weekly per-person income within $100 to $500, and with Caucasian females living in cities or suburbs. Improvements were also greater with those who took part in the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program, where the participants exhibited higher baseline frequency of planning meals before grocery shopping, comparing prices, and budgeting enough money for food and food related purchases. Overall, the average change in HEI scores increased by 2.3 points, however, the variability between the participants’ changes was high, suggesting that more targeted program lessons might increase program efficacy, especially for those participants with high baseline HEI scores.

This study examined the effect of participation in a coaching education program compared to a control group on coaches’ perceived coaching efficacy. The program consisted of two 6-hour sessions. The Coaching Efficacy Scale was used to determine the impact of the program on perceived coaching efficacy. Forty-six Michigan high school coaches and 14 coaching preparation students were recruited for the experimental (n = 36) and control groups (n = 24) for this study. The participants were asked to respond to pretest and posttest CES questionnaires that examined how confident they were in influencing the learning and performance of their athletes in four dimensions of coaching: character building, motivation, strategy, and technique. Results showed a significant effect for a coaching education program on the perceived efficacy levels of the trained coaches compared to control coaches.

This exploratory study employed quasi-experimental research methods to investigate the relationship between adult participation in a comprehensive workplace financial education program and changes in financial knowledge levels. Results revealed a positive association between participation in the education program and changes in financial knowledge levels, even when controlling for demographic and socioeconomic differences between the participant and non-participant groups. However, results did not support an association between perfect attendance in the program and changes in financial knowledge. Evidence from this study provides meaningful insight into the association between adult financial education and financial knowledge and offers guidance for the future development of effective comprehensive workplace financial education programs.

A formative evaluation was conducted of the Chemical Health Education and Coaching (CHEC) program sponsored by the Youth Sports Institute at Michigan State University. The degree to which high school athletic coaches (a) became knowledgeable about chemical health and (b) were confident in their ability to apply that knowledge to their team were the two primary concerns of this study. Two hundred eighteen high school athletic coaches comprised the experimental and control groups to whom identical pretest and posttest instruments were administered. The CHEC program consisted of three 1-hr sessions. The subjects were asked to respond to one questionnaire that assessed both their knowledge and confidence in that knowledge and their ability to use it with their athletes. The results indicated that the coaches who were exposed to CHEC were more knowledgeable and more confident than control coaches.

Abstract Intergenerational programs increase interaction among groups allowing both generations to share their beliefs, talents, knowledge, and wisdom. The Senior Programming Intergenerational College Experience (SPICE) Project was designed to deliver an 11-week long intergenerational program with college-aged and older adult participants and was provided virtually during the pandemic. The purpose of this study was to describe the participation characteristics and attitudes towards aging and technology of older adults who completed the SPICE program. Older adult recruitment occurred through paper fliers posted at senior centers/housing, libraries, faith-based organizations in Genesee County, Michigan and through a large state-wide electronic study recruitment portal. Older adult participants were English speaking; aged 55+ years; able to participate in live Zoom sessions once/week; and were committed to complete >75% of the SPICE program. Online surveys were completed before/after SPICE to evaluate attitudes towards aging and technophilia. Results from 15 older adults who completed >75% of SPICE sessions indicated that they were able to cope with life as they got older (60%), viewed aging as a positive experience (85.7%), were not afraid to use new technology (68.6%) and believed technology was useful/fun (88.6%). Older adults were divided on willingness to try new technology and their ability to keep up with technological progress. These data indicate that for higher education institutions focused on designing age-inclusive online opportunities, older adults who possess a positive attitude toward aging and technology may be more likely to complete intergenerational programs.

A virtual-reality-simulation-based nursing education program incorporating an information processing model helps nursing students develop their learned knowledge as nursing behavior and develop their ability to cope with complex clinical challenges. The purpose of this study is to develop a nursing education program using an immersive virtual reality simulation app for clinical situations based on an information processing model and identify the effects. A non-quantitative control group pretest–post-test design was employed. The programs were developed using the ADDIE model and an information processing model. In order to verify the effectiveness of the program, six adult nursing learning issues were taught to the experimental group over 6 weeks. The nursing education program in this study provides comprehensive experiential learning through advanced virtual simulation, significantly enhancing nursing students’ performance confidence, critical-thinking abilities, and problem-solving skills across a wide range of clinical scenarios. By repeatedly engaging with diverse learning topics related to adult nursing, this program not only equips students with essential practical skills but also contributes to the overall improvement of patient safety and the quality of medical care.

This study aimed to investigate the overall effects of a tailored dietary education program for older adult patients on hemodialysis (HD) based on self-efficacy theory, dietary knowledge and habits, nutritional intake, and biochemical parameters. A nonequivalent control group pre-test–post-test design was conducted for 8 weeks. The experimental and control groups received a weekly nutritional program and standard nursing care with an additional educational session, respectively. A clinical survey was conducted before and after the intervention. After the intervention, self-efficacy, dietary knowledge, and dietary habits were higher in the experimental group than in the control group. Moreover, carbohydrate, phosphorus, and sodium intake significantly decreased post-intervention in the experimental group but not in the control group. The dietary education program for older HD patients showed positive effects on boosting their self-efficacy, increasing dietary knowledge, improving dietary habits, and decreasing carbohydrate, calcium, phosphorus, and sodium intake.

This paper examines an “experimental” program in African American adult education that took place at the Harlem branch of the New York Public Library in the early 1930s. The program, called the Harlem Experiment, brought together a group of white funders (the Carnegie Corporation and the American Association for Adult Education)—who believed in the value of liberal adult education for democratic citizenship—and several prominent black reformers who led the program. I argue that the program represented a negotiation between these two groups over whether the black culture, politics, and protest that had developed in 1920s Harlem could be deradicalized and incorporated within the funder's “elite liberalism”—an approach to philanthropy that emphasized ideological neutrality, scholarly professionalism, and political gradualism. In his role as the official evaluator, African American philosopher Alain Locke insisted that it could, arguing that the program, and its occasionally Afrocentric curriculum, aligned with elite liberal ideals and demonstrated the capacity for a broader definition of (historically white) liberal citizenship. While the program was ultimately abandoned in the mid-1930s, the efforts of Locke and other black reformers helped pave the way for a future instantiation of racial incorporation: the intercultural education movement of the mid-twentieth century.

This research is done to prove the effect of web-based language learning on the vocabulary improvement of the subjects of the study and to seek the attitudes of the learners on the use of web-based approach in the language class. In order to ensure the homogeneity of the students, a modified Michigan test (version1997) was presented and students were divided into one experimental group (n1=33) who learned their course vocabularies making use of free vocabulary learning sites of IELTS English language learning site every day for 8 weeks and one control group (n2=33) who received ordinary classroom instructions each session. The result appeared to manifest that learners’ perception improve by incorporating web based instruction in language learning classroom. It also indicated a significant difference between experimental and control group with regard to their vocabulary knowledge. WBL instruction enhanced EFL learners' vocabulary knowledge. The findings of this study may offer some implications for language teaching and learning. To begin with, these findings can be beneficial for language learning curriculum designers to present tasks that enrich both the language of the students and their motivation to apply on-line web sites for autonomous learning of language.

It is now well-established that well-designed programs can induce short-term gains in aerobic fitness, muscular strength, and physical performance, although during the primary school years, gains may be somewhat less than in adults. Long-term effects have as yet had little investigation. Most studies have looked simply at the tracking of activity patterns and associated lifestyle variables, usually from mid or late adolescence into early adult life. Although statistically significant, such tracking has been relatively weak. Further, in the absence of an experimental intervention, such studies provide little information on the long-term health value of physical education. The potential for obtaining definitive information is suggested by a long-term (20+ year) follow-up of participants in the Trois Rivières study. This program was well-perceived by participants, and the data obtained on adults suggest it may have had some favorable long-term impact on activity patterns, physiological parameters, and smoking behavior.

The effectiveness of a computer program, CUES, designed to improve adult ESL students' essays was tested both formally and informally. The formal measures carried out in both the experin7eiital and the control groups included: 1) holistic ratings of both groups' pre- and post- intervention essays, and 2) a comparison of pre- and post-intervention thinking-aloud protocol analyses. The informal measures included a questionnaire administered to the students and critical comments about the program garnered from the students' responses in a 500-ivord essay entitled, "Assess the program CUES." This research provides an opportunity for the author to examine critically the research methods used, and to conclude that both formal and informal evaluation measures provide a balanced assessment of CALL software.

Two universities were selected to evaluate music fundamentals software developed for prospective nursery-school through sixth-grade teachers. Using folk songs as examples, the investigator designed computer-assisted instructional (CAI) software to supply future teachers with a repertoire of songs and related music concepts for classroom use. Subjects at the first university ( N = 148) were enrolled in a music fundamentals and performance skills course, the first of two music courses for preservice teachers. Subjects at the second university ( N = 95) were enrolled in a music methods and materials course, the only music course for preservice teachers offered at this site. A comparison of posttest scores of control (in-class lecture) and experimental (CAI) groups yielded no significant differences in either experiment. Students in both experiments thought the song examples were helpful. Furthermore, reducing class time spent with music theory allowed instructors to spend more time with other instructional tasks, potentially enabling students to improve in other performance areas.

Although the Flow experience has been researched extensively in music education, there is limited investigation into exploring the link between the Suzuki piano method and Csikszentmihalyi’s flow theory. To address this gap, a quasi-experimental study was conducted to examine how the Suzuki piano method can promote the flow state of adult piano beginners. The study involved 36 participants assigned to either a treatment group or a control group. Both groups underwent an eight-week training program in Suzuki Piano Method and Conventional Group Piano Class respectively. After the program, participants from both groups underwent a post-training performance test and completed a survey, namely Learning and Performing Experience Scale (LPES), modified based on the Short Flow State Scale (S-FFS) by Martin and Jackson to examine their flow experience. The treatment group showed significantly higher flow experience levels than the control group, particularly in dimensions of Concentration, Unambiguous feedback, Timelessness, Loss of self-consciousness, Sense of control, Autotelic experience, and Challenge-skill balance. The findings suggested that the Suzuki piano method may promote flow experiences among adult beginners in piano learning. The implication of the study signified that the collaborative and interactive learning inherent in the method might be beneficial in achieving flow state and could be a consideration in conducting group piano classes.

Background: The prevalence of diabetes has increased worldwide. Therefore, interest in improving glycemic control for diabetes has grown, and continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) has recently received attention as an effective glycemic control method. This study developed and evaluated the effectiveness of an education program for pattern management using CGM based on Whittemore and Roy’s middle-range theory of adapting to diabetes mellitus. Methods: A quasi-experimental study was conducted on 50 adult patients with type 2 diabetes who visited the outpatient clinic of a university hospital. The experimental group was treated with a pattern management program using CGM for 12 weeks and six personalized education sessions were provided to the patients through face-to-face education and phone monitoring. Results: The frequency of diabetes-related symptoms in the experimental group decreased, and social support (t = 2.95, p = 0.005), perceived benefits (t = 3.72, p < 0.001) and self-care significantly increased (t = 6.09, p < 0.001). Additionally, the program was found to be effective in improving HbA1c (t = −3.83, p < 0.001), FBS (t = −2.14, p = 0.038), and HDL-C (t = 2.39, p = 0.021). Conclusion: The educational program developed through this study can be implemented as a self-management approach for individuals with type 2 diabetes using CGM, aimed at enhancing glycemic control and preventing complications.

Asthma attacks all age gatherings however it regularly begins in childhood age itself. It is a sickness depicted by irregular attacks of shortness of breath and wheezing, which move in earnestness and repeat from individual to person. In an attacks, the coating of the entries swell making the aviation routes limited and decreasing the progression of air all through the lungs. In an individual, this may happen from hour to hour and everyday too. The incidence is 5% in adult population and 10% in children. Incidence of asthma has considerably increased over last few decades so the present study aims to assess the effectiveness of Bronchial Asthma Education Program on Asthma control among Asthma Patients. A quantitative approach with Pre-Experimental research design was adopted to conduct the study among 30 Bronchial Asthma patients who were selected by Non- probability convenience sampling technique. Semi-structured interview method was used to collect the demographic data and level of knowledge regarding asthma among asthma patients was assessed by structured questionnaire. The Bronchial Asthma education was given with flash card which includes the details which controls Asthma. The results of the study shows that among 30 samples in the experimental group the pretest results reveal, 25(83.34%) had inadequate knowledge, 4(13.33%) had moderately adequate knowledge and 1(3.33%) had good knowledge.Where as in the post test, 20(66.67%) had adequate knowledge and 10(33.33%) had moderately adequate knowledge regarding Bronchial Asthma among asthma patients. This reveals the level of knowledge regarding asthma is highly significant in the experimental group because the level of knowledge is improved after health education.

The purpose of this study was to measure weight loss in overweight employees of a large corporation in Western Michigan who all received the same education on how to lose weight, but were randomly assigned to one of three groups: contingency contracting with a partner, contingency contracting alone, or no contingency contracting. A pretest-posttest quasi-experimental design was used and data were collected by a demographic questionnaire and measure of weight at the initial, 10th, and 23rd weeks. A total of 84 subjects completed the 10 week weight loss program and 57 subjects returned for the 23rd week follow up weight. Each group lost a significant amount of weight from pre-program to 10 weeks; however, there were no significant differences across groups. Although the groups were not significantly different from each other, the results support the value of individualizing interventions and offer insight into how demographic variables may affect attrition and methods chosen for weight loss.

Background and Objectives: Lifestyle interventions such as exercise prescription and education may play a role in the management of peripheral neuropathy in people with diabetes. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of undertaking an exercise program in comparison with an education program on the signs and symptoms of peripheral neuropathy in people with diabetes at risk of neuropathic foot ulceration. Materials and Methods: Twenty-four adult participants with diabetes and peripheral neuropathy were enrolled in this parallel-group, assessor blinded, randomised clinical trial. Participants were randomly allocated to one of two 8-week lifestyle interventions, exercise or education. The primary outcome measures were the two-part Michigan Neuropathy Screening Instrument (MNSI) and vibratory perception threshold (VPT). Secondary outcome measures included aerobic fitness, balance and lower limb muscular endurance. Results: Participants in both lifestyle interventions significantly improved over time for MNSI clinical signs (MD: −1.04, 95% CI: −1.68 to −0.40), MNSI symptoms (MD: −1.11, 95% CI: −1.89 to −0.33) and VPT (MD: −4.22, 95% CI: −8.04 to −0.40). Although the interaction effects did not reach significance, changes in values from pre to post intervention favoured exercise in comparison to control for MNSI clinical signs (MD −0.42, 95% CI −1.72 to 0.90), MNSI clinical symptoms (MD −0.38, 95% CI −1.96 to 1.2) and VPT (MD −4.22, 95% CI −12.09 to 3.65). Conclusions: Eight weeks of exercise training or lifestyle education can improve neuropathic signs and symptoms in people with diabetes and peripheral neuropathy. These findings support a role for lifestyle interventions in the management of peripheral neuropathy.

First graders (N = 323) participated in an evidence-based classwide reading program (Peer-Assisted Learning Strategies; PALS). Adual-discrepancy approach was used to identify 56 children whose reading performance and growth rates were substantially below those of average readers, indicating they were not responding sufficiently to PALS. This approach reliably distinguished among unresponsive at-risk, responsive at-risk, and average-performing readers. Nonresponders were assigned randomly to one of three increasingly individualized treatments: PALS, Modified PALS, or tutoring by an adult. No statistically significant between-group differences on reading-related measures were found. Effect sizes (between .30 and .50) comparing groups and proportions of nonresponders following treatment suggest that tutoring was most promising for reducing unresponsiveness.

About one-third of adolescent mothers receive inadequate prenatal care, and babies born to young mothers are more likely to be of low birth weight. The objective of this study is to evaluate a peer-centered prenatal care program for adolescent mothers. Pregnant adolescents were randomly assigned to an experimental or control group in a mastery modeling peer-support intervention designed to improve long- and short-term perinatal outcomes. A sample of 282 urban pregnant adolescents (94% African American, 4% Caucasian, 2% other) participated in the study. Participants were recruited from five clinics located mainly in Detroit, Michigan. Participants in the experimental group received care in a small group setting and learned to perform critical measurements with a peer partner during prenatal visits. Participants in the control group received individual prenatal care in the same clinics. Outcome measures included birth weight, years of schooling completed at one year postpartum, planned and unplanned pregnancy at one year postpartum, and employment and school attendance at one year postpartum. Mothers in the experimental group had a lower rate of low birth weight (6.6% vs. 12.5%, p=0.08). The rate of unplanned pregnancy was also lower for adolescents in the experimental group (13.4% vs. 15.9%), although this difference was not statistically significant. Adolescents who participated in the intervention were more likely to have continued their education during the pregnancy and the postpartum year. The mastery modeling, peer-centered, prenatal care program produced some positive pregnancy outcomes for adolescent mothers.

Although the association between unemployment and offending is well established, relatively little is known about the impact of vocational education and training programs on re-offending, with much of the previous work in this area failing to control for, or correct, selection bias. This article reports the findings of a systematic review, which considers the findings of only those studies that have used experimental or quasi-experimental designs to evaluate vocational training and employment program outcomes for adult offenders. The analysis identifies key features, based on these studies, of those programs associated with the best outcomes and recommends selection criteria for those who are most likely to benefit from prison vocational education and training.

Background/Context Educational resilience is defined as having successful outcomes in school despite the adversities one has faced in life. There is a dearth of research on a particularly high-risk group—unaccompanied refugee minors who are separated from their parents by war and lack the protection and advocacy provided by adult caretakers. Purpose This qualitative study explores the factors associated with educational resilience among unaccompanied Sudanese refugee youth who experienced extreme trauma and chronic adversity prior to being placed with American foster families in 2000–2001. Setting The setting includes Lansing and neighboring communities in Michigan. Participants Nineteen Sudanese refugees (mean age—15 years at the time of resettlement; gender—17 males, 2 females) who had been placed in a foster care program for unaccompanied refugee minors in the United States participated in the retrospective interviews. We interviewed 20 parents from 15 families, including five couples, 3 married mothers interviewed alone, 2 single fathers, and 5 single mothers. Research Design The study used a qualitative research design by using open ended semi-structured interviews in which the participants were comfortable speaking about their experiences, yet the researchers were able to follow the interview protocol. With the assistance of the resettlement agency (Lutheran Social Services of Michigan), we sampled for diversity in the foster families to obtain a sample of youth who were exposed to diverse families and circumstances. With the help of foster parents and the assistance of a Sudanese cultural consultant, we recruited at least one youth from each of these families, with the exception of two families. Data Analysis The transcribed interviews were coded thematically. A three-step coding procedure was used: open, axial, and selective coding. Findings All youth in our study came to the United States with “education” as their primary goal. Many youth had a desire to help those left in Africa and to rebuild Sudan. All the youth interviewed had achieved at least a high school diploma, and all but three had either completed or were enrolled in higher education. Personal attributes, relationships, and community support/opportunities helped the youth in overcoming the challenges that they faced in terms of educational attainment in the United States. Conclusions/Recommendations This study confirmed the important roles of parents, teachers, and school counselors in educational success for at-risk youth. The challenges noted by the youth and their foster parents provided useful information for possible changes in policy that could enhance their success.

Background:Several studies have reported an age-related decline of physical activity (PA). We examined the impact of 4 important transitional periods—adolescence, the beginning of postsecondary education, entry into the labor market, and parenthood—on the PA of participants in the Trois-Rivières quasi-experimental study. Methods:In 2008, 44 women and 42 men aged 44.0 ± 1.2 years were given a semistructured interview; the frequency and duration of physical activities were examined during each of these transition periods. Subjects had been assigned to either an experimental program [5 h of weekly physical education (PE) from Grades 1 to 6] or the standard curriculum (40 min of weekly PE) throughout primary school. Results:The percentage of individuals undertaking ≥ 5 h of PA per week decreased from 70.4% to 17.0% between adolescence and midlife. The largest decline occurred on entering the labor market (from 55.9% to 23.4%). At midlife, there were no significant differences of PA level between experimental and control groups. Men were more active than women at each transition except for parenthood. Conclusions:Our results highlight a progressive nonlinear decline of PA involvement in both groups. Promotion initiatives should target these periods to prevent the decline of PA.

AbstractThe objective of this study was to analyse the effectiveness of two intervention programs: a physical exercise program with strategies to support the three basic psychological needs (autonomy, competence and relatedness); and a physical exercise program with nutritional education in order to improve the lifestyles of adult and elderly women who practiced functional maintenance. The Self-Determination Theory was applied as the theoretical framework. A sample of 135 women aged between 40 and 88 years (59.66 ± 10.76) who enrolled in a 12-week functional maintenance program and attended 24 exercise classes took part in the study. A quasi-experimental study was performed where strategies to support the three basic psychological needs were applied to one group and strategies for the improvement of eating habits were applied to the other group. No strategy was applied to the control group. The main results showed an improvement in experimental groups I and II when compared to the control group regarding the variables of autonomy, competence, intrinsic regulation, identified regulation, introjected regulation, external regulation and eating habits, after the application of the intervention programs. The conclusion is that both intervention programs were successful with this project’s participants and that it is crucial to promote such intervention programs in functional maintenance classes, as they foster healthy lifestyles among participants.

ABSTRACT Background An Indian Council of medical Research (ICMR) task force project was started in 1985 covering a population of 120,000 of Raipur Rani block of Haryana to study the feasibility of implementation of oral health promotion and prevention in the community and in the schools by utilizing existing manpower at different sectors. Objectives (i) To evaluate the long-term role of healthcare workers in imparting primary preventive strategies of oral health to adult community (ii) To study the knowledge, attitude and practice of the community regarding oral health. Methodology A total of 600 households (300 in experimental block and 300 in control block) were included by stratified random sampling method depending on the distance from Community Health centre of Raipur Rani to assess KAP and Caries activity among the population. Results The use of toothbrush as an oral hygiene method is being practiced by 96.6% of population in the experimental area compared to 84% in the control population where no oral health promotion activity was carried out. A great variation was seen in the frequency of its usage; 56% of the population in experimental area brushes twice per day compared to 7% of control area. According to the present data, 80% of the population in the experimental area is aware about the etiology, progress and consequences of gum diseases due to continuous oral health education delivered by the trained health staff during their routine beat program. In the control area where no oral health program was implemented, this knowledge was seen in 22 to 35% of the population. Conclusion In a developing country like India there is a pressing need of community-based oral health programs to reduce the burden of oral diseases, improve quality of life and reduce out of pocket expenditure incurring toward treatment of these diseases. There is a strong belief among language teachers that intensive exposure to language alone can lead to acquisition. The present study is a qualitative- quantitative research design that used a quasi-experimental design to compare between the effectiveness of intensive exposure to language versus phonological awareness explicit instruction on adult Arab EFL learners’ EFL reading literacy in a Saudi university context. The study is also concerned with Saudi adult learners’ attitudes towards phonological awareness instruction. Participants (N=89) were all male students enrolled in an intensive EFL undergraduate program, where they were required to pass an intensive EFL course. Sample were randomly divided into a treatment group (N=47), who received phonological awareness treatment, and a control group (N=42) who were exposed to language intensively. Posttest findings confirmed the significant effect of phonological awareness instruction on the sample’s EFL literacy. Moreover, positive attitudes towards the program were detected in the interviews held at the end of treatment. Therefore, the study recommended introducing phonological awareness instruction to develop Arab learners’ EFL literacy.

Shoulder pathologies among the adult population are increasing, causing a high concern in health-educational institutions. The aim of this research is to take a step further and to conduct a detailed study of the relationship between the application of Jackins technique and a postural education program for people affected by shoulder problems. This quasi-experimental study was carried out on 41 adults with shoulder pathologies, with an average age of 58.17±11.75. The main instruments used were the UCLA Test, Thermometer Euroqol of Health, and an ad-hoc questionnaire. In addition, SPSS 22.0 was used for statistical analysis. The results show that the Jackins shoulder rehabilitation program produces significant improvements in participants who it was applied to, causing a positive increase in shoulder evaluation and health status. Similarly, participants who were given a postural education treatment did not experience any modification in these variables. The Jackins program resulted in improvements in reference to shoulder evaluation. Thus, the course of the intervention program based on physical activity (six months) produces functional improvements in shoulder pathology through supervised therapeutic exercises and home intervention in patients with subacromial syndrome.

The article deals with the problem of adults' language teaching for intercultural communication. The novelty of the work lies in the scientific substantiation of the priority of the development of adults' cultural identity. The authors determine its levels and the possibility of its development with the introduction of an ethnically oriented approach. International relations, the language policy of the state, the high degree of Russia's involvement in international cooperation, the expansion of interethnic contacts led to the social order of society for foreign language training and retraining of the adult contingent of students. In this article, the authors describe the structural content and highlight the levels of cultural self-identity of adult learners, and analyze the possibility of introducing the author's ethnically oriented approach into additional adult language education. In order to test the effectiveness of using the elaborated methodology for the development of cultural self-identity of adults on the basis of ethnically oriented, competence-based, communicative-cognitive, personal-activity and linguistic approaches, in the 2019-2020 academic year, the first series of experimental training was conducted for students of the Communicative English Course for Adults program at Nizhny Novgorod Dobrolyubov State Linguistic University. The classroom load was 120 hours. Adult education aimed at the development of cultural identity is based on the following approaches: competence-based, communicative-cognitive, personal-activity, linguo-cultural, ethnically oriented. Cultural self-identity has the following levels: initial, associative-analytical, verbal-analytical, and verbal-creative. The obtained results of experimental training indicate that the training conducted in the experimental group, which aimed at developing cultural identity for effective intercultural and interethnic communication, was successful. Based on the results of the experimental training, it can be concluded that the ethnically oriented approach developed by the authors has a positive impact on the development of the students' cultural identityy. It is necessary to build training on a contrast-comparative basis with the use of an ethnically oriented approach, using a set of exercises, which give adults a real opportunity to compare, analyze, mentally penetrate into the linguistic and cultural phenomena of their country and countries speaking the language adults study.

The general English studies was introduced as a compulsory course for sandwich learners of colleges of education with a view to allowing them attain proficiency in English. Despite the measure, it seems attainment of proficiency is a mirage. Unattainment of English proficiency in sandwich program has been ascribed to less satisfactory teaching skill embracing language competence and pedagogy. However, there has been a dearth of studies on the teaching method of facilitators of the course. This paper therefore, has a focus on the relevance of bilingualism, in English Language development in the sandwich centers. Pretest and posttest control group as quasi-experimental design with 3X2X2 factorial matrix was adopted for the study. Data were analyzed using analysis of covariance and multiple classification analysis. Bilingual method of teaching was ascertained as having an upper hand over Direct and conventional method with a mean score of 67.54. Bilingualism therefore proved relevant to the teaching of General English Studies to the Adult learners. The paper concludes that facilitators should recognize the learners' mother tongue in the learning of English. This would stimulate learners' interest, accelerate their understanding, and ensure effective class-contact needed in adult education teaching-learning process.

Commitment not to use tobacco, or to quit use, as a formal contract between an adolescent and a significant adult is a preventive model that has not been widely practiced or explored and has been formally evaluated even less. In this paper, we present the rationale and protocol for the evaluation of the Swedish Tobacco-free Duo program, a multicomponent school-based program the core of which rests on a formal agreement between an adolescent and an adult. The adolescent’s commitment mainly concerns avoiding the onset of any tobacco use while the adult commits to support the adolescent in staying tobacco free, being a role model by not using tobacco themselves. Objective To assess (1) whether Tobacco-free Duo is superior to an education-only program in preventing smoking onset among adolescents and promoting cessation among their parents, (2) whether exposure to core components (adult-child agreement) entails more positive effects than exposure to other components, (3) the impact of the program on whole school tobacco use, (4) potential negative side effects, and (5) school-level factors related to fidelity of the program’s implementation. Methods A mixed-design approach was developed. First, a cluster randomized controlled trial was designed with schools randomly assigned to either the comprehensive multicomponent program or its educational component only. Primary outcome at the adolescent level was identified as not having tried tobacco during the 3-year junior high school compulsory grades (12-15 years of age). An intention-to-treat cohort-wise approach and an as-treated approach complemented with a whole school repeated cross-sectional approach was devised as analytical methods of the trial data. Second, an observational study was added in order to compare smoking incidence in the schools participating in the experiment with that of a convenience sample of schools that were not part of the experimental study. Diverse secondary outcomes at both adolescent and adult levels were also included. Results The study was approved by the Umeå Regional Ethics Review Board (registration number 2017/255-31) in 2017. Recruitment of schools started in fall 2017 and continued until June 2018. In total, 43 schools were recruited to the experimental study, and 16 schools were recruited to the observational study. Data collection started in the fall 2018, is ongoing, and is planned to be finished in spring 2021. Conclusions Methodological, ethical, and practical implications of the evaluation protocol were discussed, especially the advantage of combining several sources of data, to triangulate the study questions. The results of these studies will help revise the agenda of this program as well as those of similar programs. Abstract Background Pneumonia remains a leading cause of hospitalization and accounts for significant antibiotic use. This study aims to evaluate the impact of bundled antimicrobial stewardship program (ASP) interventions, including procalcitonin and surveillance cultures, on broad-spectrum antimicrobial use in patients with suspected pneumonia. Methods This is a pre-post, quasi-experimental study conducted at Michigan Medicine. During the intervention period, an ASP member reviewed adult patients admitted to 3-floor medical services with antibiotics initiated for suspected pneumonia. The ASP member (1) recommended the use of procalcitonin when clinically appropriate, (2) used institutional guidelines to guide empiric antibiotic selection based on risk for drug-resistant pathogens, and (3) ordered a methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) surveillance culture in patients receiving empiric anti-MRSA therapy. The primary endpoint was anti-MRSA and anti-pseudomonal (PSA) antibiotic use measured as days of therapy (DOT) per 1000 days-present on the services of interest. Antibiotic use and clinical data were extracted from an electronic database. Pneumonia diagnosis codes were used to identify the study population. Results A total of 549 patients were included: 310 in the pre-intervention (December 1/2017 - 3/31/2018) and 239 in the intervention (December 1/2018 - 3/31/2019) periods. Baseline demographics were similar between groups (Table 1). Less than 15% of patients had a microbiological diagnosis via respiratory culture in both study periods (Table 2). Respiratory cultures were ordered less commonly in the intervention period; however, the rate of culture positivity was higher (28% vs. 48%, P < 0.01). Process measures improved in the intervention period with an increase in the proportion of patients with MRSA surveillance cultures (13% vs. 39%, P < 0.01) and procalcitonin monitoring (77% vs. 83%, P = 0.07). Compared with the pre-intervention period, anti-MRSA antibiotic use decreased from 172 to 158 DOT per 1000 days-present (Δ -8%) and the use of anti-PSA antibiotics decreased from 348 to 316 DOT per 1000 days present (Δ -9%). Conclusion The implementation of an ASP-led pneumonia bundle led to reductions in anti-MRSA and anti-PSA antibiotic use. Disclosures All authors: No reported disclosures.

AbstractObjective:To sustainably improve cleaning of high-touch surfaces (HTSs) in acute-care hospitals using a multimodal approach to education, reduction of barriers to cleaning, and culture change for environmental services workers.Design:Prospective, quasi-experimental, before-and-after intervention study.Setting:The study was conducted in 2 academic acute-care hospitals, 2 community hospitals, and an academic pediatric and women’s hospital.Participants:Frontline environmental services workers.Intervention:A 5-module educational program, using principles of adult learning theory, was developed and presented to environmental services workers. Audience response system (ARS), videos, demonstrations, role playing, and graphics were used to illustrate concepts of and the rationale for infection prevention strategies. Topics included hand hygiene, isolation precautions, personal protective equipment (PPE), cleaning protocols, and strategies to overcome barriers. Program evaluation included ARS questions, written evaluations, and objective assessments of occupied patient room cleaning. Changes in hospital-onset C. difficile infection (CDI) and methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) bacteremia were evaluated. Results:On average, 357 environmental service workers participated in each module. Most (93%) rated the presentations as ‘excellent’ or ‘very good’ and agreed that they were useful (95%), reported that they were more comfortable donning/doffing PPE (91%) and performing hand hygiene (96%) and better understood the importance of disinfecting HTSs (96%) after the program. The frequency of cleaning individual HTSs in occupied rooms increased from 26% to 62% (P < .001) following the intervention. Improvement was sustained 1-year post intervention (P < .001). A significant decrease in CDI was associated with the program. Conclusion:A novel program that addressed environmental services workers’ knowledge gaps, challenges, and barriers was well received and appeared to result in learning, behavior change, and sustained improvements in cleaning.

Since positive psychology (PP) is a nascent area of research, there are very few empirical studies assessing the impact of positive psychology interventions. Accordingly, this article reports on a quantitative study concerning the use of a positive psychology intervention to develop learners’ self-esteem in the context of higher education in the English as a foreign language (EFL) sector in Iran. Data was collected during the academic year 2016–2017 from a university in Iran using Cooper Smith (1967, 1981) Self Esteem Inventory Adult Form (CSEI-A) , a self-report questionnaire, as the instrument and administering it before and after a TEFL master course. Thirty six university students participated in a five-month long quasi-experimental study. The current study’s primary aim was to investigate in detail the potential of PP intervention for supporting the self-esteem progress in the context in question. The study showed a statistically significant improvement in the self-esteem of the participants in the experimental group after completing the course suggesting positive paths from positive psychology to understanding the strengths, and managing the weaknesses effectively. The encouraging results from this program suggest new avenues for approaching the change of self-esteem.

Background: Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a heterogeneous, chronic endocrine disorder commonly diagnosed in women of reproductive age. It often manifests with some or all of the following symptoms: menstrual dysfunction, infertility, hirsutism, acne, and obesity. Polycystic ovarian syndrome has now become one of the major health problem among adolescent and adult women. Lifestyle modifications, including diet modifications, exercise, and behavioral modification, appear to alleviate the metabolic dysfunction and improve the reproductive disorders of girls with PCOS. Therefore, lifestyle modifications have been gradually acknowledged as the first-line management for PCOS. Methods: Quantitative experimental and control group pre and post test design was used in this study.A total of 152 young girls from different colleges in Chennai were screened based on Rotterdam criteria and among that 30 study participants were selected who met the inclusion criteria. Structured self-administered questionnaire was used to elicit the baseline data. Participants were divided into three groups, 10 in each group – control group (only education regarding PCOS), experimental group I with all three interventions (cinnamon tea, exercise program and anxiety reduction counselling) given for 3 months, experimental group 2 with exercise program and anxiety reduction counselling given for 3 months. Post test I is conducted after 45 days and post test II is conducted after 3 months. Non probability Purposive sampling technique was used. Prior permissions were obtained from all the college principals and dean. Informed consent was obtained from all the participants. Results: This study shows that there was significant decrease (P<0.001) in the Physiological parameters (BMI, Waist circumference) and biochemical parameters (Total testosterone level) of experimental 1 group with multi interventional strategies (cinnamon tea, exercise program and anxiety reduction counselling) when compared to experimental 2 group and control group. There was better reduction in the experimental 2 group (exercise program and anxiety reduction counselling) when compared to the control group. There is increase in BMI, Waist circumference and total testosterone level in the control group when compared to experimental 1 and 2 groups. Conclusion: The present study highlighted the beneficial role of multi interventional strategies (cinnamon tea, exercise program and anxiety reduction counselling) in reducing the BMI, waist circumference and total testosterone level of young girls with Polycystic ovarian syndrome. Hence, the study recommends multi interventional strategies for young girls with Polycystic ovarian syndrome.

In Romania there are only a few parental education programs being carried out, but most of them are not properly/scientifically measured in terms of efficiency. For this reason, the purpose of the research was the implementation and scientific validation of a training program for developing the parental competence. The parental competence was defined as a system of knowledge, skills, capabilities, abilities and habits that would allow the parent to successfully fulfill the parental responsibilities and also prevent/deal with crisis situations in a manner that would contribute to the child’s development (Glăveanu, 2009). The above-mentioned term became widely spread in Romania after 2010, when the Integrated National Strategy for Creating and Developing Parental Competence was published. The Strategy is supported by the Ministry of Education, Research, Youth and Sports and its deadline is in the summer of 2012. The 298 parents who participated in the research were selected based on the criteria of average and low parental competence and their children had educational and social adaptation difficulties. The methods used during the research were the formative experiment and the questionnaire-based investigation. The participants were evaluated before and after the training with the Parental Competence Questionnaire (PCQ, developed by the author of the study). The PCQ had five dimensions comprised of a total of 81 items: knowing the specificities of the child between 6 and 11 years of age (alpha=0.69), affective support and stress management (alpha=0.74), disciplining (alpha=0.82), time management (alpha=0.77) and crisis management (alpha=0.77). Each of the PCQ dimensions (which were built in accordance to the conceptualized structure of the parental competence) had a training module dedicated to it. PCQ was validated with the Parental Authority Questionnaire (PAQ, built by Buri in 1991); significant correlations for the two questionnaires occurred (between 0.5 and 0.9). The statistical results obtained by using PCQ six months after the training (Independent-Samples T Test=61.43; df=298; p<0.001) showed significant differences between the experimental group (M=315.81) and the control group (M=243.22); the PCQ results of the experimental group were also compared (Paired-Samples T Test=58.39; df=141; p<0.001) and showed statistically significant differences between the pre-training results (time 1=just before training, M=221.31) and the post-training ones (time 2=graduating training+6 months, M=315.81). Similarly, the scores of the control group at the two chosen moments (time 1: M=221.57 and time 2: M=243.22) indicated a timed evolution, but statistically insignificant of the parental competence (Paired-Samples T Test=34.19; df=155, p=0.07). These results proved the certain and significant influence that the training had over the development of the parental competence, in comparison to the case of the spontaneous growth – thus being confirmed the hypothesis of the study. As a conclusion, the results proved the internal validation of the training program (according to Vaughn’s criteria, 2005). It is yet to be proven the external validation regarding the impact of the training program on the child’s overall development (Kirkpatrick, 2006; Vaughn, 2005) and this will be done by applying the training program on an expanded/national level. Key words: adult education, child development, parental competence, parental training, training validation.
