Although many algorithms have been proposed to mitigate air turbulence in optical videos, there do not seem to be consistent blind video quality assessment metrics that can reliably assess different approaches. Blind video quality assessment metrics are necessary because many videos containing air turbulence do not have ground truth. In this paper, a simple and intuitive blind video quality assessment metric is proposed. This metric can reliably and consistently assess various turbulent mitigation algorithms for optical videos. Experimental results using more than 10 videos in the literature show that the proposed metrics correlate well with human subjective evaluations. Compared with an existing blind video metric and two other blind image quality metrics, the proposed metrics performed consistently better.

We developed a super-resolution (SR) benchmark to analyze SR capabilities to upscale compressed videos. The dataset for the benchmark was collected using video codecs of 5 different compression standards. We assessed 17 state-of-the-art SR models using our benchmark and evaluated their ability to preserve scene context and their robustness to compression artifacts. To get an accurate perceptual ranking of SR models, we conducted a crowd-sourced side-by-side comparison of SR results. We also analyzed the results of the benchmark and developed an objective quality assessment metric based on existing best-performing objective metrics. Our metric outperforms other video quality metrics by Spearman correlation with subjective scores for the task of upscaling compressed videos.

Applications ranging from simple visualization to complex design require 3D models of indoor environments. This has given rise to advancements in the field of automated reconstruction of such models. In this paper, we review several state-of-the-art metrics proposed for geometric comparison of 3D models of building interiors. We evaluate their performance on a real-world dataset and propose one tailored metric which can be used to assess the quality of the reconstructed model. In addition, the proposed metric can also be easily visualized to highlight the regions or structures where the reconstruction failed. To demonstrate the versatility of the proposed metric we conducted experiments on various interior models by comparison with ground truth data created by expert Blender artists. The results of the experiments were then used to improve the reconstruction pipeline.

Communication pattern is drifting from conventional audio to multimedia applications, streaming live and on-demand digital video contents over telecommunications and broadcasting networks. Currently, some businesses deploy video in promoting products in a far more enriching, entertainment and informative approach than typical traditional audio would allow. However, users of multimedia applications are interested in paying for a good acceptable video quality. Thus, this paper reviews methods used in Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR), Structural Similarity Index Metric (SSIM) and Video Quality Metric (VQM) with the objective of providing useful information to wireless video services providers in assessing and monitoring of quality of multimedia services delivered to users. Experimental comparison of PSNR, SSIM and VQM assessment methods to examine their performances in evaluation of multimedia applications has been performed. Comparing the quality performance of PSNR, SSIM and VQM metrics for Akiyo and Crew standard test sequences, it has been observed that the quality performance of the metrics improves when the bitrates allocation increase. For the test of consistency and quality performance of the metrics, observation shows that for a given bitrates of 3.84Mb/s, under CABA test configuration, Akiyo test sequence, experienced better quality performance of 46.63dB (PSNR), 99.10% (SSIM) and 11.00% (VQM) compared to lower quality performance of 36.18dB (PSNR), 90.40% (SSIM) and 22.00% (VQM) experienced by Crew test sequence. Experimental results of the media quality metrics for Akiyo and Crew standard test sequences with different temporal activity levels show that the quality performance of media content also depends on the temporal activity of the media content. The experimental results further show consistency in quality performance of PSNR, SSIM and VQM metrics for CABA and UBA test configurations. Thus, the objective metrics can be harnessed for evaluation of quality performance of multimedia applications at different channel conditions.

In image processing, using compression is very important in various applications, especially those using data quantities in transmission and storing. This importance becomes most required with the evolution of image quantities and the big data systems explosion. The image compression allows reducing the required binary volume of image data by encoding the image for transmission goal or database saving. The principal problem with image compression when reducing its size is the degradation that enters the image. This degradation can affect the quality of use of the compressed image. To evaluate and qualify this quality, we investigate the use of textural combined image quality metrics (TCQ) based on the fusion of full reference structural, textural, and edge evaluation metrics. To optimize this metric, we use the Monte Carlo optimization method. This approach allows us to qualify our compressed images and propose the best metric that evaluates compressed images according to several textural quality aspects.

Purpose The Video Quality Metric (VQM) is one of the most used objective methods to assess video quality, because of its high correlation with the human visual system (HVS). VQM is, however, not viable in real-time deployments such as mobile streaming, not only due to its high computational demands but also because, as a Full Reference (FR) metric, it requires both the original video and its impaired counterpart. In contrast, No Reference (NR) objective algorithms operate directly on the impaired video and are considerably faster but loose out in accuracy. The purpose of this paper is to study how differently NR metrics perform in the presence of network impairments. Design/methodology/approach The authors assess eight NR metrics, alongside a lightweight FR metric, using VQM as benchmark in a self-developed network-impaired video data set. This paper covers a range of methods, a diverse set of video types and encoding conditions and a variety of network impairment test-cases. Findings The authors show the extent by which packet loss affects different video types, correlating the accuracy of NR metrics to the FR benchmark. This paper helps identifying the conditions under which simple metrics may be used effectively and indicates an avenue to control the quality of streaming systems. Originality/value Most studies in literature have focused on assessing streams that are either unaffected by the network (e.g. looking at the effects of video compression algorithms) or are affected by synthetic network impairments (i.e. via simulated network conditions). The authors show that when streams are affected by real network conditions, assessing Quality of Experience becomes even harder, as the existing metrics perform poorly.

Software metrics and quality models have a very important role to play in measurement of software quality. A number of well-known quality models and software metrics are used to build quality software both in industry and in academia. Development of software metrics is an ongoing process with new metrics being continuously tried out. However, during our research on measuring software quality using object oriented design patterns, we faced many issues related to existing software metrics and quality models. For a particular situation of interest, any established metric can be used. If none is found to be appropriate, a new metric can be devised. In this paper, we discuss some of these issues and present our approach to software quality assessment.

The measurement and evaluation of the QoE (Quality of Experience) have become one of the main focuses in the telecommunications to provide services with the expected quality for their users. However, factors like the network parameters and codification can affect the quality of video, limiting the correlation between the objective and subjective metrics. The above increases the complexity to evaluate the real quality of video perceived by users. In this paper, a model based on artificial neural networks such as BPNNs (Backpropagation Neural Networks) and the RNNs (Random Neural Networks) is applied to evaluate the subjective quality metrics MOS (Mean Opinion Score) and the PSNR (Peak Signal Noise Ratio), SSIM (Structural Similarity Index Metric), VQM (Video Quality Metric), and QIBF (Quality Index Based Frame). The proposed model allows establishing the QoS (Quality of Service) based in the strategyDiffserv. The metrics were analyzed through Pearson’s and Spearman’s correlation coefficients, RMSE (Root Mean Square Error), and outliers rate. Correlation values greater than 90% were obtained for all the evaluated metrics.

This document is a supplement to the article entitled “The Multidimensional Quality Metric (MQM) Framework: A New Framework for Translation Quality Assessment”, which has been acepted for publication in the upcoming January volume of JoSTrans, the Journal of Specialized Translation. The article is a coauthored project between Dr. Alan K. Melby, Dr. Troy Cox and myself. In this document you will find a preface describing the process of writing the article, an annotated bibliography of sources consulted in my research, a summary of what I learned, and a conclusion that considers the future avenues opened up by this research. Our article examines a new method for assessing the quality of a translation known as the Multidimensional Quality Metric, MQM. In our experiment we set the MQM framework to mirror, as closely as possible, the American Translators Association's (ATA) translator certification exam. To do this we mapped the ATA error categories to corresponding MQM error categories. We acquired a set of 29 student translations and had a group of student raters use the MQM framework to rate these translations. We measured the practicality of the MQM framework by comparing the time required for ratings to the average time required to rate translations in the industry. In addition, we had 2 ATA certified translators rate the anchor translation (a translation that was scored by every rater in order to have a point of comparison). The certified translators' ratings were used to verify that the scores given by the student raters were valid. Reliability was also measured, which found that the student raters were not interchangeable, but that the measurement estimate of reliability was adequate. The article's goal was to determine the extent to which the Multidimensional Quality Metric framework for translation evaluation is viable (practical, reliable and valid) when designed to mirror the ATA certification exam. Overall, the results of the experiment showed that MQM could be a viable way to rate translation quality when operationalized based on the ATA's translator certification exam. This is an important discovery in the field of translation quality, because it shows that MQM could be a viable tool for future researchers. Our experiment suggests that researchers ought to take advantage of the MQM framework because, not only is it free, but any studies completed using the MQM framework would have a common base, making these studies more easily comparable.

The Multidimensional Quality Metrics (MQM) framework is a new system for creating customized translation quality assessment and evaluation metrics designed to fit specific translation needs. In this study I test the viability of MQM to determine whether the framework in its current state is ready for implementation as a quality assessment framework in the translation industry. Other contributions from this study include: (1) online software for designing and using metrics based on the MQM framework; (2) a survey of the typical, real-world quality assessment and evaluation practices of language service providers in the translation industry; and (3) a measurement scale for determining the viability of translation quality assessment and evaluation frameworks such as MQM. The study demonstrates that the MQM framework is a viable solution when it comes to the validity and practicality of creating translation quality metrics for the translation industry. It is not clear whether those metrics can be used reliably without extensive training of qualified assessors on the use of MQM metrics.

Background and purpose. This thesis documents a program of five studies concerned with the assessment of software measurement. The goal of this program is to assist the software industry to improve the information support for managers, analysts and software engineers by providing evidence of where opportunities for improving measurement and analysis exist. Methods. The first study examined the assessment of software measurement frameworks using models of best practice based on performance/success factors. The software measurement frameworks of thirteen organisations were surveyed. The association between a factor and the outcome experienced with the organisations' frameworks was then evaluated. The subsequent studies were more info-centric and investigated using models of information quality to assess the support provided for software processes. For these studies, information quality models targeting specific software processes were developed using practitioner focus groups. The models were instantiated in survey instruments and the responses were analysed to identify opportunities to improve the information support provided. The final study compared the use of two different information quality models for the assessing and improving information support. Assessments of the same quantum of information were made using a targeted model and a generic model. The assessments were then evaluated by an expert panel in order to identify which information quality model was more effective for improvement purposes. Results. The study of performance factors for software measurement frameworks confirmed the association of some factors with success and quantified that association. In particular, it demonstrated the importance of evaluating contextual factors. The conclusion is that factor-based models may be appropriately used for risk analysis and for identifying constraints on measurement performance. Note, however, that a follow-up study showed that some initially successful frameworks subsequently failed. This implied an instability in the dependent variable, success, that could reduce the value of factor-based models for predicting success. The studies of targeted information quality models demonstrated the effectiveness of targeted assessments for identifying improvement opportunities and suggest that they are likely to be more effective for improvement purposes than using generic information quality models. The studies also showed the effectiveness of importance-performance analysis for prioritizing improvement opportunities.

As there is a rapid growth in the field of wireless communications, the demand for various multimedia services is also increasing. The data that is being transmitted suffers from distortions through source encoding and transmission over errorprone channels. Due to these errors, the quality of the content is degraded. There is a need for service providers to provide certain Quality of Experience (QoE) to the end user. Several methods are being developed by network providers for better QoE.The human tendency mainly focuses on distortions in the Region of Interest(ROI) which are perceived to be more annoying compared to the Background(BG). With this as a base, the main aim of this thesis is to get an accurate prediction quality metric to measure the quality of the image over ROI and the BG independently. Reduced Reference Image Quality Assessment (RRIQA), a reduced reference image quality assessment metric, is chosen for this purpose. In this method, only partial information about the reference image is available to assess the quality. The quality metric is measured independently over ROI and BG. Finally the metric estimated over ROI and BG are pooled together to get aROI aware metric to predict the Mean Opinion Score (MOS) of the image.In this thesis, an ROI aware quality metric is used to measure the quality of distorted images that are generated using a wireless channel. The MOS of distorted images are obtained. Finally, the obtained MOS are validated with the MOS obtained from a database [1].It is observed that the proposed image quality assessment method provides better results compared to the traditional approach. It also gives a better performance over a wide variety of distortions. The obtained results show that the impairments in ROI are perceived to be more annoying when compared to the BG.

Le niveau d'exigence minimum pour tout système 3D (images stéréoscopiques) est de garantir le confort visuel des utilisateurs. Le confort visuel est un des trois axes perceptuels de la qualité d'expérience (QoE) 3D qui peut être directement lié aux paramètres techniques du système 3D. Par conséquent, le but de cette thèse est de caractériser objectivement l'impact de ces paramètres sur la perception humaine afin de contrôler la qualité stéréoscopique. La première partie de la thèse examine l'intérêt de prendre en compte l'attention visuelle des spectateurs dans la conception d'une mesure objective de qualité 3D. Premièrement, l'attention visuelle en 2D et 3D sont comparées en utilisant des stimuli simples. Les conclusions de cette première expérience sont validées en utilisant des scènes complexes avec des disparités croisées et décroisées. De plus, nous explorons l'impact de l'inconfort visuel causé par des disparités excessives sur l'attention visuelle. La seconde partie de la thèse est dédiée à la conception d'un modèle objectif de QoE pour des vidéos 3D, basé sur les seuils perceptuels humains et le niveau d'acceptabilité. De plus nous explorons la possibilité d'utiliser la modèle proposé comme une nouvelle échelle subjective. Pour la validation de ce modèle, des expériences subjectives sont conduites présentant aux sujets des images stéréoscopiques fixes et animées avec différents niveaux d'asymétrie. La performance est évaluée en comparant des prédictions objectives avec des notes subjectives pour différents niveaux d'asymétrie qui pourraient provoquer un inconfort visuel
The minimum requirement for any 3D (stereoscopic images) system is to guarantee visual comfort of viewers. Visual comfort is one of the three primary perceptual attributes of 3D QoE, which can be linked directly with technical parameters of a 3D system. Therefore, the goal of this thesis is to characterize objectively the impact of these parameters on human perception for stereoscopic quality monitoring. The first part of the thesis investigates whether visual attention of the viewers should be considered when designing an objective 3D quality metrics. First, the visual attention in 2D and 3D is compared using simple test patterns. The conclusions of this first experiment are validated using complex stimuli with crossed and uncrossed disparities. In addition, we explore the impact of visual discomfort caused by excessive disparities on visual attention. The second part of the thesis is dedicated to the design of an objective model of 3D video QoE, which is based on human perceptual thresholds and acceptability level. Additionally we explore the possibility to use the proposed model as a new subjective scale. For the validation of proposed model, subjective experiments with fully controlled still and moving stereoscopic images with different types of view asymmetries are conducted. The performance is evaluated by comparing objective predictions with subjective scores for various levels of view discrepancies which might provoke visual discomfort

The use of audio and video communication has increased exponentially over the last decade and has gone from speech over GSM to HD resolution video conference between continents on mobile devices. As the use becomes more widespread the interest in delivering high quality media increases even on devices with limited resources. This includes both development and enhancement of the communication chain but also the topic of objective measurements of the perceived quality. The focus of this thesis work has been to perform enhancement within speech encoding and video decoding, to measure influence factors of audio and video performance, and to build methods to predict the perceived video quality. The audio enhancement part of this thesis addresses the well known problem in the GSM system with an interfering signal generated by the switching nature of TDMA cellular telephony. Two different solutions are given to suppress such interference internally in the mobile handset. The first method involves the use of subtractive noise cancellation employing correlators, the second uses a structure of IIR notch filters. Both solutions use control algorithms based on the state of the communication between the mobile handset and the base station. The video enhancement part presents two post-filters. These two filters are designed to improve visual quality of highly compressed video streams from standard, block-based video codecs by combating both blocking and ringing artifacts. The second post-filter also performs sharpening. The third part addresses the problem of measuring audio and video delay as well as skewness between these, also known as synchronization. This method is a black box technique which enables it to be applied on any audiovisual application, proprietary as well as open standards, and can be run on any platform and over any network connectivity. The last part addresses no-reference (NR) bitstream video quality prediction using features extracted from the coded video stream. Several methods have been used and evaluated: Multiple Linear Regression (MLR), Artificial Neural Network (ANN), and Least Square Support Vector Machines (LS-SVM), showing high correlation with both MOS and objective video assessment methods as PSNR and PEVQ. The impact from temporal, spatial and quantization variations on perceptual video quality has also been addressed, together with the trade off between these, and for this purpose a set of locally conducted subjective experiments were performed.

Apesar disso, estudos recentes na área resultaram em algumas métricas que têm como finalidade avaliar objetivamente a qualidade da segmentação produzida pelos algoritmos. Tais métricas consideram as diferentes formas em que os erros ocorrem (fatores perceptuais) e seus parâmetros são ajustados de acordo com a aplicação em que se pretende utilizar os vídeos segmentados. Neste trabalho apresentam-se: i) uma avaliação da métrica que representa o estado-da-arte, demonstrando que seu desempenho varia de acordo com o algoritmo; ii) um método subjetivo para avaliação de qualidade de segmentação; e iii) uma nova métrica perceptual objetiva, derivada do método subjetivo aqui proposto, capaz de encontrar o melhor ajuste dos parâmetros de dois algoritmos de segmentação encontrados na literatura, quando os vídeos por eles segmentados são utilizados na composição de cenas em ambientes de Teleconferência Imersiva.
Assessment of video segmentation quality is a problem seldom investigated by the scientific community. Nevertheless, recent studies presented some objective metrics to evaluate algorithms. Such metrics consider different ways in which segmentation errors occur (perceptual factors) and its parameters are adjusted according to the application for which the segmented frames are intended. In this work: i) we demonstrate empirically that the performance of existing metrics changes according to the segmentation algorithm; ii) we developed a subjective method to evaluate segmentation quality; and iii) we contribute with a new objective metric derived on the basis of experiments from subjective method in order to adjust the parameters of two bilayer segmentation algorithms found in the literature when these algorithms are used for compose scenes in Immersive Teleconference environments.

Software companies rely on stored metric data in order to track and manage their projects, through analyzing, monitoring and estimating software metrics. If managers cannot believe the metrics data, the product that is being developed is fated to fail. Currently, the assessment of software effort is subjective and derived mainly through managers’ assumptions, which is fundamentally an error-prone process. We present an architecture for assessing data quality of software effort metric based on data provenance associated with a mechanism of logical inference (fuzzy logic). The contribution is to provide an assessment to search evident reasons for a low quality in order to ensure that the metrics can be used with sufficient reliability.

Sentinel wetlands at Cuyahoga Valley National Park (NP) comprise a set of twenty important management areas and reference sites. These wetlands are monitored more closely than other wetlands in the wetlands monitoring program and are the focus of the volunteer monitoring program for water levels. We used the Ohio Rapid Assessment Method (ORAM) to evaluate habitat in the sentinel wetlands. A total of 37 long-term sample plots have been established within these wetlands to monitor biological condition over time using vegetation as an indicator. Vegetation is intensively surveyed using the Vegetation Index of Biotic Integrity (VIBI), where all plant species within the plot are identified to the lowest taxonomic level possible (genus or species). Sample plots were surveyed twice from 2008 to 2018 and the vegetation data were evaluated using five metrics: VIBI, Floristic Quality Assessment Index (FQAI), percent sensitive plant species, percent invasive graminoids, and species richness. These metrics are discussed for each location. This report also highlights relevant land use histories, common native plant species, and invasive species of concern at each wetland. This is the first report in a two-part series, designed to summarize the results from intensive vegetation surveys completed at sentinel wetlands in 2008–2018. Boston Mills, Virginia Kendall Lake, Stumpy Basin, Columbia, and Beaver Marsh are all in excellent condition at one or more plots. They have unique habitats with some specialized plant species. Fawn Pond is in good condition at most plots and scores very high in comparison to other wetlands within the riverine mainstem hydrogeomorphic class. Metric scores across mitigation wetlands were low. Two of the three wetlands (Brookside and Rockside) are not meeting the benchmarks originally established by the United States Army Corps of Engineers and Ohio Environmental Protection Agency. Krejci is still a young mitigation site and success will be determined over time. Park-supported invasive species control efforts will be crucial for long-term success of these sites and future mitigation/restoration projects. The wetlands monitored because of proposed ecological restoration projects (Pleasant Valley, Stanford, and Fawn Pond) have extensive invasive plant communities. These restoration sites should be re-evaluated for their feasibility and potential success and given an order of prioritization relative to the newer list of restoration sites. Cuyahoga Valley NP has added many new areas to their list of potential wetland restoration sites after these areas were selected, and there may be better opportunities available based on restoration objectives. Restoration goals should be based on the park's desired future conditions, and mitigation goals of outside partners may not always be in line with those. The multiple VIBI plots dispersed throughout the large wetlands at Cuyahoga Valley NP detected and illuminated spatial patterns in condition. Many individual wetlands had a wide range of VIBI scores within their boundaries, sometimes reflecting localized disturbances, past modifications, and management actions. Most often, these large fluctuations in condition were linked to local invasive plant infestations. These infestations appear to be the most obvious and widespread threat to wetland ecosystems within the park, but also the most controllable threat. Some sensitive species are still present in some of the lowest scoring plots, which indicates that invasive plant species control efforts may pay off immediately with a resurgence of native communities. Invasive plant control at rare habitat sites would have large payoffs over time by protecting some of the park's most unique wetlands. Reference wetlands would also be good demonstration sites for park managers to try to maintain exemplary conditions through active management. Through this work, park managers can evaluate the feasibility, effectiveness, and scalability of management practices required to maintain wetland condition.

According to the survey we conducted prior to this webinar series dedicated to the APAC community, metadata quality was one of the most voted topics to be covered in the webinars, which is understandable - out of FAIRsFAIR’s 15 assessment metrics for the FAIRness of research objects, 12 are about metadata. Rich and persistent metadata that incorporate identifiers and encode generic and domain-specific information, accessibility and licensing, and links between objects using standardized vocabulary and communication protocols is the cornerstone of a versatile, equitable, and trustworthy scholarly infrastructure ecosystem. In this webinar, we want to focus on the various aspects of enriching the metadata of research outputs. What is considered rich or complete, what does it mean to the metadata capture and curation workflows, how is this process supported, what services are underpinned by which part of the metadata, etc? In this webinar, we’ll hear from Matthias Liffers from ARDC and representatives from Crossref, DataCite, and ORCID, to share their perspectives and provide guidance toward a world with richer metadata.
