In this paper we present the second generation receptance coupling substructure analysis (RCSA) method, which is used to predict the tool point response for high-speed machining applications. This method divides the spindle-holder-tool assembly into three substructures: the spindle-holder base; the extended holder; and the tool. The tool and extended holder receptances are modeled, while the spindle-holder base subassembly receptances are measured using a “standard” test holder and finite difference calculations. To predict the tool point dynamics, RCSA is used to couple the three substructures. Experimental validation is provided.

Abstract This paper presents a theoretical study of the frequency assignment problem of a coupled system via structural modification of one of its subsystems. It deals with the issue in which the available modifications are not simple; for example, they are not point masses, grounded springs, or spring-mass oscillators. The proposed technique is derived based on receptance coupling technique and formulated as an optimization problem. Only a few receptances at the connection ends of each subsystem are required in the structural modification process. The applicability of the technique is demonstrated on a simulated rotor system. The results show that both bending natural frequencies and torsional natural frequencies can be assigned using a modifiable joint, either separately or simultaneously. In addition, an extension is made on a previously proposed torsional receptance measurement technique to estimate the rotational receptance in bending. Numerical simulations suggest that the extended technique is able to produce accurate estimations and thus is appropriate for this frequency assignment problem of concern.

This paper introduced a new approach that employed the assumed-modes method and the receptance method, to the sensitivity analysis and the optimization of rotor-bearing systems. First, the frequency equation in terms of receptances was derived. The natural frequencies and the critical speeds for a typical rotor system were then illustrated. Beginning with the receptance equation, the authors, for the first time, derived a sensitivity matrix and employed it into an optimization process. The topographical method in conjunction with the variable metric method followed for the optimal solution. In the solution process, the sensitivity matrix provided important information for search direction. Examples of critical speeds adjustment via supports change in an optimal sense were illustrated. Numerical results showed that the approach was very efficient and the solutions were very accurate. This approach, in addition, provided such valuable information as which supports dominated specific critical speeds. The developed approach proved to be very helpful to rotor engineers in both rotor modification and rotor design.

The theory of receptance applied to the modal analysis of a spinning disk with interior multi-point supports is developed. Traveling modes are first introduced for the vibration analysis of a spinning disk. The receptance method is then applied to join the spinning disk and the point supports. The frequency equation and mode shapes are then formulated. An important property, conjugate pairing of the cross receptances is derived. This feature has never been described before in the literature. Numerical results for various numbers of point supports are illustrated. The results show that the nodal pattern of a spinning disk with point supports is varying periodically. The change of rotation speed further causes the mode exchange phenomenon. The change of first critical speed due to point supports is also discussed.

This paper presents an exact method for evaluating the receptances of nonproportionally damped dynamic systems. Based on a decomposition of the damping matrix, an iteration procedure is developed. This method does not require matrix inversion, and completely eliminates the error caused by undamped modal data. Compared to the existing exact solution methods, the proposed method can save more time in the computation. Also, the study yields a convenient way to determine the asymptotic stability of nonproportionally damped systems.

The behavior of impacting systems is highly nonlinear and generally numerical analysis must be resorted to if a quantitative description of the behavior of such systems is required. However, the behaviour of the individual subsystems is often reasonably linear and this along with the fact that the subsystems come into contact when the relative displacements between contact points is zero make it convenient to base the analysis on the receptances, that is, the displacement-force frequency response functions, at the contact points. The procedure for doing this is described with reference to a lumped parameter model. Simple formulae are developed to aid the numerical analysis. The extension of the method to consider continuous systems and those defined by measured receptances is described and examples based on numerically derived and experimentally derived receptances are given.

The dynamic response of a structure can be described by both its translational and rotational receptances. The latter ones are frequently not considered because of the difficulties in applying a pure moment excitation or in measuring rotations. However, in general, this implies a reduction up to 75% of the complete model. On the other hand, if a modification includes a rotational inertia, the rotational receptances of the unmodified system are needed. In one method, more commonly found in the literature, a so called T-block is attached to the structure. Then, a force, applied to an arm of the T-block, generates a moment together with a force at the connection point. The T-block also allows for angular displacement measurements. Nevertheless, the results are often not quite satisfactory. In this work, an alternative method based upon coupling techniques is developed, in which rotational receptances are estimated without the need of applying a moment excitation. This is accomplished by introducing a rotational inertia modification when rotating the T-block. The force is then applied in its centroid. Several numerical and experimental examples are discussed so that the methodology can be clearly described. The advantages and limitations are identified within the practical application of the method.

Many structures or machines interact with some internal nonconservative forces and present asymmetric systems in which the stiffness and damping matrices are asymmetric. Examples include friction-induced vibration and aeroelastic flutter. Asymmetric systems are prone to flutter instability as a result of the real parts of some poles becoming positive when certain system parameters vary. This paper presents a receptance-based inverse method for assigning a number of complex poles of second-order damped asymmetric systems while keeping other unassigned poles unchanged. It uses state-feedback (active damping and active stiffness) to shift the poles to desired locations where all poles have negative real parts. Receptances at only a small, limited number of degrees-of-freedom of the underlying symmetric system are required. Simulated numerical examples indicate that this is an effective method and is capable of assigning negative real parts to unstable poles to stabilise an otherwise unstable second-order dynamic system.

This paper proposes a method for active vibration control to a two-link flexible robot arm in the presence of time delay, by means of robust pole placement. The issue is of practical and theoretical interest as time delay in vibration control can cause instability if not properly taken into account in the controller design. The controller design is performed through the receptance method to exactly assign a pair of pole and to achieve a given stability margin for ensuring robustness to uncertainty. The desired stability margin is achieved by solving an optimization problem based on the Nyquist stability criterion. The method is applied on a laboratory testbed that mimic a typical flexible robotic system employed for pick-and-place applications. The linearization assumption about an equilibrium configuration leads to the identification of the local receptances, holding for infinitesimal displacements about it, and hence applying the proposed control design technique. Nonlinear terms, due to the finite displacements, uncertainty, disturbances, and the coarse encoder quantization, are effectively handled by embedding the robustness requirement into the design. The experimental results, and the consistence with the numerical expectations, demonstrate the method effectiveness and ease of application.

In many engineering applications it is desirable to assign the zeros of point or cross receptances to particular frequencies. This means that at the chosen coordinate no vibration will be experienced at those frequencies. It is shown how such an objective can be achieved by means of passive stiffness, damping, and mass modifications to the structure. The frequency responses of a subsidiary eigenvalue problem, the eigenvalue problem of the zeros, are determined in order that the methods of inverse structural modification may be applied. The technique requires only a small number of measurements from the structure in its unmodified condition. Numerical and physical experiments are carried out to illustrate the application of the method.

In order to ensure the stability of machining processes, the tool point frequency response functions (FRFs) should be obtained initially. By the receptance coupling substructure analysis (RCSA), the tool point FRFs can be generated quickly for any combination of holder and tool without the need of repeated measurements. A major difficulty in the sub-structuring analysis is to determine the connection parameters at the tool-holder interface. This study proposed an identification method to recognize the connection parameters at the tool-holder interface by using RCSA and particle swarm optimization (PSO). In this paper, the XHK machining center is divided into two components, which are the tool and the spindle assembly firstly. After that, the end point FRFs of the tool are achieved by mode superposition method. The end receptances of the spindle assembly with complicated structure are obtained by impacting test method. Through translational and rotational springs and dampers, the tool point FRF of the machining center is obtained by coupling the two components. Finally, PSO is adopted to identify the connection parameters at the tool-holder interface by minimizing the difference between the predicted and the measured tool point FRFs. Comparison results between the predicted and measured tool point FRFs show a good agreement and demonstrate that the identification method is valid in the identification of connection parameters at the tool-holder interface.

Input–output partial feedback linearisation is experimentally implemented on a non-smooth nonlinear system without the necessity of a conventional system matrix model for the first time. The experimental rig consists of three lumped masses connected and supported by springs with low damping. The input and output are at the first degree of freedom with a non-smooth clearance-type nonlinearity at the third degree of freedom. Feedback linearisation has the effect of separating the system into two parts: one linear and controllable and the other nonlinear and uncontrollable. When control is applied to the former, the latter must be shown to be stable if the complete system is to be stable with the desired dynamic behaviour.

This paper considers the reduction of high order models generated by a finite element analysis. The aim is to provide a low order model which retains the effect of parameter changes and so may be used to update the unknown physical structural parameters of the modelled system in the time or frequency domains. After reviewing the methods of structural parameter identification, the available order reduction algorithms and their properties are introduced. Modal truncation is determined to be the most suitable method and the standard algorithm is extended to accommodate unknown parameters. Finally the effect of the reduction process on the modelled receptances is demonstrated.

A spindle integrated cutting force system where piezoelectric force sensors are embedded in the spindle housing is studied. The transfer function between the force experienced at the end mill and measured at the spindle integrated force sensor varies depending on the tool length sticking out. In the paper, a method is proposed to predict the transfer function of the overall system by coupling the receptances of the analytically modeled end mill and experimentally measured spindle structures. The experimentally proven method allows for the automated calibration of the spindle integrated force system whenever a tool change occurs to accurately measure high-frequency bandwidth cutting forces.

Torsional vibration of shafts is a very important problem in engineering, in particular in ship engines and aeroengines. Due to their high levels of integration and complexity, it is hard to get their accurate structural data or accurate modal data. This lack of data is unhelpful to vibration control in the form of structural modifications. Besides, many parts in shaft systems are not allowed to be modified such as rotary inertia of a pump or an engine, which is designed for achieving certain functions. This paper presents a strategy for torsional vibration control of shaft systems in the form of structural modifications based on receptances, which does not need analytical or modal models of the systems under investigation. It only needs the torsional receptances of the system, which can be obtained by testing simple auxiliary structure attached to relevant locations of the shaft system and using the finite element model (FEM) of the simple structure. An optimization problem is constructed to determine the required structural modifications, based on the actual requirements of modal frequencies and mode shapes. A numerical experiment is set up and the influence of several system parameters is analysed. Several scenarios of constraints in practice are considered. The numerical simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of this method and its feasibility in solving torsional vibration problems in practice.

The computation of dominant eigenvalues of second-order linear control systems with multiple time-delays is tackled by using a contour integral method. The proposed approach depends on a reduced characteristic function and the associated characteristic matrix comprised of measured open-loop receptances. This reduced characteristic function is derived from the original characteristic function of the second-order time delayed systems based on the reasonable assumption that eigenvalues of the closed-loop system are distinct from those of the open-loop system, and has the same eigenvalues as those of the original. Then, the eigenvalues computation is equivalent to solve a nonlinear eigenvalue problem of the associated characteristic matrix by using a contour integral method. The proposed approach also utilizes the spectrum distribution features of the retarded time-delay systems. Finally, numerical examples are given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

A new approach to analyzing the dynamic coupling between shaft torsion and blade bending of a rotating shaft–disk–blade unit is introduced. The approach allows the shaft to vibrate freely around its rotation axis instead of assuming a periodic perturbation of the shaft speed that may accommodate the shaft flexibility only to a limited extent. A weighted residual method is applied, and the receptances at the connections of blades and shaft–disk are formulated. Numerical examples are given for cases with between two and six symmetrically arranged blades. The results show not only coupling between the shaft, disk, and blades, but also coupling between individual blades where the shaft acts as a rigid support and experiences no torsional vibration. The blade-coupling modes occurred only in repeated frequencies. Finally, the effect of shaft speed on the modal frequencies was investigated. Plots illustrating the occurrence of critical speeds and flutter instabilities are presented.

This paper presents a general approach for modeling shrouded blade vibration that takes into consideration the nonlinear friction constraint at the shroud interface. In this approach, linear structures are characterized by receptances and shroud constraints by nonlinear impedances. The proposed methodology is presented in detail for simplified models of the bladed disk and shroud interface. The corresponding governing equations for the dynamic response are derived for both tuned and mistuned stages. As an example the method is applied to an idealized tuned stage. Two cases are considered, a lubricated shroud for which the coefficient of friction is equal to zero, and a frictionally constrained shroud. The effect of varying the shroud-to-shroud preload is studied. In the lubricated case nonlinear behavior is seen when vibrations are strong enough to result in separation of the shroud interfaces. In the case of finite friction there is a profound change in resonant frequencies when the preload is increased sufficiently to prevent gross slip at the shrouds.

Deep hole boring using slender bars that have tuned mass dampers integrated within them make the boring process chatter vibration resistant. Dampers are usually designed using classical analytical solutions that presume the (un)damped boring bar which can be approximated by a single degree of freedom system, and the damper is placed at the free end. Since the free end is also the cutting end, analytical models may result in infeasible design solutions. To place optimally tuned dampers within boring bars, but away from the free end, this paper presents a receptance coupling approach in which the substructural receptances of the boring bar modelled as a cantilevered Euler–Bernoulli beam are combined with the substructural receptances of a damper modelled as a rigid mass integrated anywhere within the bar. The assembled and damped system response thus obtained is used to predict the chatter-free machining stability limit. Maximization of this limit is treated as the objective function to find the optimal mass, stiffness and damping of the absorber. Proposed solutions are first verified against other classical solutions for assumed placement of the absorber at the free end. Verified models then guide prototyping of a boring bar integrated with a damper placed away from its free end. Experiments demonstrate a ~100-fold improvement in chatter vibration free machining capability. The generalized methods presented herein can be easily extended to design and develop other damped and chatter-resistant tooling systems.

One of the factors that influence the dynamic characteristics of machining systems is the cutting tool. Cutting tools are very diverse, and receptance coupling substructure analysis (RCSA) is essential for analyzing the dynamic characteristics of each tool. For RCSA, a full receptance matrix of the equipment and tools is essential. In this study, rotational degree-of-freedom receptance was estimated and analyzed using translational receptance. Displacement/moment receptance was analyzed according to the distance of the response point using the first-and second-order finite difference methods. The rotation/moment receptance was estimated according to the distance of the response point. Rotation/moment receptance was analyzed using Schmitz’s method and compensation strategies. The limitations of these strategies were analyzed, and the rotation/moment receptance for the beam under free-free boundary conditions was predicted using the second compensation strategy.

This study aims to investigate the dynamic characteristics of a milling machine with different head stocks by using finite element (FE) method and receptance coupling analysis (RCA). For this purpose, five full finite element machine models, including vertical column, reformed head stock and feeding mechanism were created. With these models, the tool point frequency response functions were directly predicted. Another approach was the application of the receptance coupling method, in which the frequency response of the assembly milling tool was calculated from the receptance components of the individual substructures through the coupling operation with the interfaces of the feeding mechanism. Results show that a whole machine model with reformed stock has superior dynamic behavior when compared with the original design, by an increment of 10% in the dynamic stiffness. The receptance coupling method was verified to show an accurate prediction of the frequency response functions of the spindle tool when compared with the results obtained from the full FE models. Overall, the proposed methodology can help the designer to efficiently and accurately develop the machine tool structure with excellent mechanical performance.

Structural vibration analysis is used to suppress unwanted vibrations in many areas such as aerospace engineering, manufacturing, defense, automotive, etc. As a result of suppressing the unwanted vibration, the quality of the product is improved. Focusing on the minimization of the vibration amplitudes via a concept of receptance, a new and efficient method for calculating the receptance of a translational mass-spring-damper system with N masses and M absorbers (where N and M are any positive integer) is developed. The receptance of the combined system, in terms of the parameters of the main and absorber systems is derived, separately. The optimal parameters of the absorbers are then found. A methodology is derived using dynamic stiffness and linear graph representation in order to verify the dynamic stiffness, i.e., the inverse of the receptance, of the system.

A rotor system can be studied via various approaches, e.g., FEM, the transfer matrix method, etc. The receptance method has been one of the methods used for frequency analysis of rotors. The authors, herein, have shown an application of the receptance matrix for sensitivity analysis. Examples of critical speed sensitivity to support stiffness were illustrated and a computing algorithm was developed. Numerical examples proved the approach to be valuable for rotor engineers in quick evaluation and understanding of the support effects.

The eigenvalue problem for a circular plate with an attached mass is considered. The receptance method and the finite element method are both used to solve the problem. The eigenvalue equation obtained with the receptance method allows for both numerical and asymptotic solutions. By means of the method of a small disturbance, the simple formulas for eigenvalues are evaluated and the accuracy of these formulas is estimated. The asymptotic formulas describe the influence of the attached mass, the stiffness of a spring and damping on eigenvalues. The results of the computations show that eigenvalues obtained with the different methods show good agreement.

The Elliptical Plane has been recently introduced as a modal identification method that uses an alternative plot of the receptance. The method uses the dissipated energy per cycle of vibration as a starting point. For lightly damped systems with conveniently spaced modes, it produces quite accurate results, especially when compared to the well-known method of the inverse. When represented in the Elliptical Plane, the shape of the receptance is elliptical near resonant frequencies. The modal damping factor can be determined from the angle of the ellipse’s major axis with the horizontal axis, whereas the real and imaginary parts of the modal constants can be determined from numerical curve-fitting (as in the method of the circle - Nyquist plot). However, the lack of points that can be used near the resonance (due to limitations in the frequency resolution, and effects from other modes near each resonance) and the fact that measurements are polluted by noise, bring uncertainty to the numerical curve-fitting. This paper aims at providing the first steps on the improvement of the quality of the modal identification of the receptance in the Elliptical Plane. The method and results are discussed with a multiple degree-of-freedom numerical example.

When using a shaker to conduct receptance function measurements, it is usual to put a stinger between the shaker and a force transducer that is attached to a test structure. Ideally, a stinger can transmit desired axial force to excite the structure and isolate excitations in all other DOFs in order not to bias the testing results. The selections of stingers were made by trial-and-error, by chance, or by experience. This may cause test errors especially when the magnitude of receptance function of the excitation system is significant compared with that of the structural system at the correspondent frequency. In this work, substructure synthesis algorithm was used to calculate the effects of stingers on the receptance function measurements. The dynamic characteristics of a shaker, a shaker suspension system, a stinger, and a test structure were considered in the analysis. If the shaker is fixed, the method can predict the effects of the stinger on measured receptance functions. Finally, a cantilever beam and seven different sizes of stingers were used to verify this method. Good agreements were found between the predictions and testing results.

Vibration transmission characteristics of a cylindrical shell with a rectangular plate are discussed in this paper by the substructure receptance method. The system is divided into two substructures: the plate and the shell. After finding the theoretical receptance function of each substructure, the coupling equation of the combined system is solved by considering the continuity conditions at the joint between the plate and the shell. The numerical results are compared with the experimental ones to show the validity of the formulation. After that, effects of the plate's parameters on vibration transmission characteristics are discussed. The parameter study shows that it is important to avoid impedance matching for the plate and the shell in the design of suitable structures with low vibration and noise radiation characteristics.

Active vibration control approaches have been widely applied on improving reliability of robotic systems. For linear vibratory systems, the vibration features can be altered by modifying poles and zeros. To realize the arbitrary assignment of the closed-loop system poles and zeros of a linear vibratory system, in this paper, an active PID input feedback vibration control method is proposed based on the receptance method. The establishment and verification of the proposed method are demonstrated. The assignable poles during feedback control are calculated and attached with importance to expand the application of the integral control. Numerical simulations are conducted to verify the validity of the proposed method in terms of the assignment of closed-loop poles, zeros, and both. The results indicate that the proposed method can be used to realize the active vibration control of closed-loop system and obtain the desired damping ratio, modal frequency, and dynamic response.

The receptance method is applied to the analytical study of the free vibrations of a simply supported circular cylindrical shell that is either empty or filled with an in viscid, incompressible fluid and with lumped masses attached at arbitrary positions. The receptance of the fluid-filled shell is obtained using the added virtual mass approach to model the fluid–structure interaction. The starting data for the computations is the modal properties of the cylinder that can be obtained using any theory of shells. Numerical results are obtained as roots of the frequency equation and also by considering the trivial solution. They are compared to data obtained by experimental modal analysis performed on a stainless steel tank, empty, or filled with water, with a lead mass attached.

The implementation of high-speed machining for the manufacture of discrete parts requires accurate knowledge of the system dynamics. We describe the application of receptance coupling substructure analysis (RCSA) to the analytic prediction of the tool point dynamic response by combining frequency response measurements of individual components through appropriate connections. Experimental verification of the receptance coupling method for various tool geometries (e.g., diameter and length) and holders (HSK 63A collet and shrink fit) is given. Several experimental results are presented to demonstrate the practical applicability of the proposed method for chatter stability prediction in milling.

Micro-end-milling tools are suitable for machining miniature parts which have complex shape. As the diameters of tools are too small, cannot directly obtain the frequency response functions (FRFs) through impact hammer test at tool tip. This paper employs Receptance Coupling method (RC), couple the tool tip’s FRFs with machine-toolholder system’s FRF, and then get the micro-end-milling tool’s FRF. Establish the coupling model, then finite element and hammer test of the blank gauge tools are used to obtain the coupling transfer functions (TFs). Then analyze the tool tip model by finite element, couple with the machine-toolholder system hammer test result and coupling transfer functions, finally the micro-end-milling tool’s FRFs are obtained. Through the hammer test of blank gauge tool, the effectiveness and feasibility of RC method are verified. The result shows that the RC method is accurate at micro-end-milling tool in steady state milling.

This paper presents two efficient methods to calculate the unbalance vibration response of a flexible rotor provided with a squeeze-film damper (SFD) with retainer springs. Both methods are iterative and combine the harmonic balance and receptance approaches. The first method, called the modified iteration method (MIM), is suitable for predicting the three-dimensional mode shapes of a concentric SFD-rotor system. The second method, called the modified harmonic balance method (MHBM), is developed to calculate the non-linear vibration response of a flexible shaft provided with either a concentric or eccentric SFD. The system is also investigated experimentally under different conditions. The predictions computed by these methods are compared with experimental measurements and reasonably good agreement is obtained.
