Rank aggregation is applied on the web to build various applications like meta-search engines, consumer reviews classification, and recommender systems. Meta-searching is the generation of a single list from a collection of the results produced by multiple search engines, together using a rank aggregation technique. It is an efficient and cost-effective technique to retrieve quality results from the internet. The quality of results produced by a meta-searching relies upon the efficiency of rank aggregation technique applied. An effective rank aggregation technique assigns the rank to a document that is closest to all its previous rankings. The newly generated list of documents may be evaluated by the measurement of Spearman footrule distance. In this article, various fuzzy logic techniques for rank aggregation are analyzed and further improvements are proposed in Modified Shimura technique. Consequently, two novel OWA operators are suggested for the calculation of membership values of document ranks in a modified Shimura technique. The performance of proposed improvements is evaluated on the Spearman footrule distance along with execution time. The results show that the anticipated improvements exhibit better performance than other fuzzy techniques.

We need a reasonable method of compiling data from different studies regarding the expression of microRNA (miRNA) in laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC). The robust rank aggregation method was used to integrate the rank lists of miRNAs from 11 studies. The enrichment analysis was performed on target genes of meta-signature miRNAs. The Cancer Genome Atlas database was used to confirm the results of meta-analysis. Three meta-signature miRNAs (miR-21-5p, miR-196a-5p and miR-145-5p) were obtained. All three miRNAs could be prognostic for LSCC. The enrichment analysis showed that these miRNAs were associated significantly with multiple cancer-related signaling pathways. The robust rank aggregation approach is an effective way to identify important miRNAs from different studies. All identified miRNAs could be candidates for LSCC diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers.

High overall vaccination levels sometimes hide pockets of poor coverage. We adopted a meta-population framework to model local aggregation of populations, and used this to investigate the effects of vaccination heterogeneity. A recent survey of antibody levels in a community with low vaccination levels in The Netherlands enabled us to assess the relative importance of local and long-range infective contacts, and thus identify feasible levels of aggregation in the meta-population model. In the aggregated model, we found that heterogeneity in vaccination coverage can lead to a much increased rate of infection among unvaccinated individuals, with a simultaneous drop in the average age at infection.

The advance of metagenomic studies provides the opportunity to identify microbial taxa that are associated with human diseases. Multiple methods exist for the association analysis. However, the results could be inconsistent, presenting challenges in interpreting the host-microbiome interactions. To address this issue, we develop Meta-Signer, a novel Metagenomic Signature Identifier tool based on rank aggregation of features identified from multiple machine learning models including Random Forest, Support Vector Machines, Logistic Regression, and Multi-Layer Perceptron Neural Networks. Meta-Signer generates ranked taxa lists by training individual machine learning models over multiple training partitions and aggregates the ranked lists into a single list by an optimization procedure to represent the most informative and robust microbial features. A User will receive speedy assessment on the predictive performance of each ma-chine learning model using different numbers of the ranked features and determine the final models to be used for evaluation on external datasets. Meta-Signer is user-friendly and customizable, allowing users to explore their datasets quickly and efficiently.

Abstract. Individual participant data (IPD) meta-analysis is the gold standard of meta-analyses. This paper points out several advantages of IPD meta-analysis over classical meta-analysis, such as avoiding aggregation bias (e.g., ecological fallacy or Simpson’s paradox) and shows how its two main disadvantages (time and cost) can be overcome through Internet-based research. Ideally, we recommend carrying out IPD meta-analyses that consider online versus offline data gathering processes and examine data quality. Through a comprehensive literature search, we investigated whether IPD meta-analyses published in the field of educational psychology already follow these recommendations; this was not the case. For this reason, the paper demonstrates characteristics of ideal meta-analysis on teachers’ judgment accuracy and links it to recent meta-analyses on that topic. The recommendations are important for meta-analysis researchers and for readers and reviewers of meta-analyses. Our paper is also relevant to current discussions within the psychological community on study replication.

An improved method to obtain and purify the tetrasodium salts of 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-sulfonatophenyl)porphyrin (TPP-pS4) and 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(3-sulfonatophenyl)porphyrin (TPP-mS4) is reported. With these substances as standards, the analysis of a typical reaction crude obtained in the sulfonation of tetraphenylporphyrin with hot sulfuric acid shows that the para/meta selectivity of sulfonation at each individual phenyl ring is 95:5. The pKa values of both TPP-pS4 and TPP-mS4 were spectrophotometrically measured (4.73 ± 0.01 and 4.85 ± 0.01 respectively). These results show that the sulfonato group has a stronger mesomeric electronic effect than the inductive one. The all-meta isomer of meso-tetrasulfonatophenylporphyrin in acidic aqueous solutions (10-3–10-4M) shows a total absence of aggregation under the same experimental conditions in which its all-para counterpart is fully aggregated, as inferred from the typical Soret J- and H-aggregation bands characteristic of the supramolecular homoassociates. The effect of the number of meta-sulfonato groups on the structure of the aggregates at different length-scales is discussed.

Rational deliberation helps to avoid cyclic or intransitive group preferences by fostering meta-agreements, which in turn ensures single-peaked profiles. This is the received view, but this paper argues that it should be qualified. On one hand we provide evidence from computational simulations that rational deliberation tends to increase proximity to so-called single-plateaued preferences. This evidence is important to the extent that, as we argue, the idea that rational deliberation fosters the creation of meta-agreement and, in turn, single-peaked profiles does not carry over to single-plateaued ones, and the latter but not the former makes coherent aggregation possible when the participants are allowed to express indifference between options. On the other hand, however, our computational results show, against the received view, that when the participants are strongly biased towards their own opinions, rational deliberation tends to create irrational group preferences, instead of eliminating them. These results are independent of whether the participants reach meta-agreements in the process, and as such they highlight the importance of rational preference change and biases towards one’s own opinion in understanding the effects of rational deliberation.

Rank aggregation, which combines multiple individual rank lists toobtain a better one, is a fundamental technique in various applications such as meta-search and recommendation systems. Most existing rank aggregation methods blindly combine multiple rank lists with possibly considerable noises, which often degrades their performances. In this paper, we propose a new model for robust rank aggregation (RRA) via matrix learning, which recovers a latent rank list from the possibly incomplete and noisy input rank lists. In our model, we construct a pairwise comparison matrix to encode the order information in each input rank list. Based on our observations, each comparison matrix can be naturally decomposed into a shared low-rank matrix, combined with a deviation error matrix which is the sum of a column-sparse matrix and a row-sparse one. The latent rank list can be easily extracted from the learned low-rank matrix. The optimization formulation of RRA has an element-wise multiplication operator to handle missing values, a symmetric constraint on the noise structure, and a factorization trick to restrict the maximum rank of the low-rank matrix. To solve this challenging optimization problem, we propose a novel procedure based on the Augmented Lagrangian Multiplier scheme. We conduct extensive experiments on meta-search and collaborative filtering benchmark datasets. The results show that the proposed RRA has superior performance gain over several state-of-the-art algorithms for rank aggregation.

Online learning methods, similar to the online gradient algorithm (OGA) and exponentially weighted aggregation (EWA), often depend on tuning parameters that are difficult to set in practice. We consider an online meta-learning scenario, and we propose a meta-strategy to learn these parameters from past tasks. Our strategy is based on the minimization of a regret bound. It allows us to learn the initialization and the step size in OGA with guarantees. It also allows us to learn the prior or the learning rate in EWA. We provide a regret analysis of the strategy. It allows to identify settings where meta-learning indeed improves on learning each task in isolation.

Abstract Motivation Information on protein–protein interactions is collected in numerous primary databases with their own curation process. Several meta-databases aggregate primary databases to provide more exhaustive datasets. In addition to exhaustivity, aggregation contributes to reliability by providing an overview of the various studies and detection methods supporting an interaction. However, interactions listed in different primary databases are partly redundant because some publications reporting protein–protein interactions have been curated by multiple primary databases. Mere aggregation can thus introduce a bias if these redundancies are not identified and eliminated. To overcome this bias, meta-databases rely on the Molecular Interaction ontology that describes interaction detection methods, but they do not fully take advantage of the ontology’s rich semantics, which leads to systematically overestimating interaction reproducibility. Results We propose a precise definition of explicit and implicit redundancy and show that both can be easily detected using Semantic Web technologies. We apply this process to a dataset from the Agile Protein Interactomes DataServer (APID) meta-database and show that while explicit redundancies were detected by the APID aggregation process, about 15% of APID entries are implicitly redundant and should not be taken into account when presenting confidence-related metrics. More than 90% of implicit redundancies result from the aggregation of distinct primary databases, whereas the remaining occurs between entries of a single database. Finally, we build a ‘reproducible interactome’ with interactions that have been reproduced by multiple methods or publications. The size of the reproducible interactome is drastically impacted by removing redundancies for both yeast (−59%) and human (−56%), and we show that this is largely due to implicit redundancies. Abstract. Summarizing and organizing research in narrative reviews is a classic procedure for cumulating research. In recent years narrative reviews have been increasingly, though not completely, replaced by meta-analyses. Using a case study of a prominent narrative review of the behavioral priming literature ( Bargh, Schwader, Hailey, Dyer, & Boothby, 2012 ), we show that narrative reviews run the risk of drawing a picture that tends to be too good to be true, when the effect-sizes of the papers cited in the narrative review are compared to meta-analyses of the respective topic. We shortly discuss the reasons for this, emphasizing two sources of bias that may inflict narrative reviews to a larger degree than meta-analyses, namely bias in study selection, and bias in study aggregation.

Background: Gamification has been adopted in the health care field for broaching sensitive topics and increasing motivation for behavior changes. Games developed to stimulate discussion surrounding end-of-life issues, and thereby promoting advance care planning also emerged. Aim: The aim is to integrate the quantitative evidence and qualitative evidence to understand the effectiveness of and experience with games for advance care planning. Design: A mixed-methods systematic review and meta-analysis (PROSPERO ID: CRD42020163312) was undertaken. Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal tools were used for quality appraisal. Data were synthesized and pooled for meta-analysis or meta-aggregation when appropriate. Data sources: We searched MEDLINE, CINAHL, EMBASE, PsycINFO, Cochrane Library, WanFang, China Knowledge Resource Integrated Database, and Chinese Biomedical Literature Database from the inception of the databases for qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-method studies. Results: Eleven articles of ten studies were included, six of which were feasibility studies. The quality of the quantitative component of most included studies (7/8) was rated as low, and the qualitative component of most included studies (7/8) was rated as moderate. The meta-analysis showed that games for advance care planning are effective to increase self-efficacy, readiness, knowledge, and process of advance care planning behaviors. The meta-aggregation showed that games for advance care planning are highly acceptable and the participants perceived the game experience as fun and enjoyable. Conclusions: Advance care planning games seem to be a promising intervention for increasing the uptake of advance care planning behaviors. Meta-analysis of panel data is uniquely suited to uncovering phenomena that develop over time, but extant approaches are limited. There is no straightforward means of aggregating findings of primary panel studies that use different time lags and different numbers of waves. We introduce continuous time meta-analysis (CoTiMA) as a parameter-based approach to meta-analysis of cross-lagged panel correlation matrices. CoTiMA enables aggregation of studies using two or more waves even if there are varying time lags within and between studies. CoTiMA thus provides meta-analytic estimates of cross-lagged effects for a given time lag regardless of the frequency with which that time lag is used in primary studies. We describe the continuous time underpinnings of CoTiMA, its advantages over discrete-time, correlation-based meta-analysis of structural equation models (MASEM), and how CoTiMA would be applied to meta-analysis of panel studies. An example is then used to illustrate the approach. We also conducted Monte Carlo simulations demonstrating that bias is larger for time category–based MASEM than for CoTiMA under various conditions. Finally, we discuss data requirements, open questions, and possible future extensions.

BackgroundPatients with CKD are at high risk for thrombotic and hemorrhagic complications. Abnormalities in platelet function are central to these complications, but reports on platelet function in relation to CKD are conflicting, and vary from decreased platelet reactivity to normal or increased platelet responsiveness. The direct effects of uremic toxins on platelet function have been described, with variable findings.MethodsTo help clarify how CKD affects platelet function, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of platelet activity in CKD, with a focus on nondialysis-induced effects. We also performed an extensive literature search for the effects of individual uremic toxins on platelet function.ResultsWe included 73 studies in the systematic review to assess CKD’s overall effect on platelet function in patients; 11 of them described CKD’s effect on ex vivo platelet aggregation and were included in the meta-analysis. Although findings on platelet abnormalities in CKD are inconsistent, bleeding time was mostly prolonged and platelet adhesion mainly reduced. Also, the meta-analysis revealed maximal platelet aggregation was significantly reduced in patients with CKD upon collagen stimulation. We also found that relatively few uremic toxins have been examined for direct effects on platelets ex vivo; ex vivo analyses had varying methods and results, revealing both platelet-stimulatory and inhibitory effects. However, eight of the 12 uremic toxins tested in animal models mostly induced prothrombotic effects.ConclusionsOverall, most studies report impaired function of platelets from patients with CKD. Still, a substantial number of studies find platelet function to be unchanged or even enhanced. Further investigation of platelet reactivity in CKD, especially during different CKD stages, is warranted.

IntroductionOver the recent years, meta-analysis has become a very influential tool to synthesize information from multiple primary studies of similar design. Widespread use of increasingly complex statistical methods makes it ever more challenging to adequately assess the results reported and conclusions drawn in meta-analyses of psychopharmacological studies.Objectives/aimsThis study aimed to identify potential fallacies of meta-analytic reporting and interpretation by in-depth examination of recent publications on anti-depressant medication.MethodsPublished meta-analytic datasets were re-analysed and the results and possible interpretations obtained in this way were compared with the published results and interpretations.ResultsSeveral widespread methodological problems were identified in the example studies. As most important among these appear the choice of effect size measures and modeling approaches, as well as the related risk of data dredging. Concerning the level of granularity, two pitfalls encountered were inappropriate aggregation of original data and lack of adequate subgroup analyses. Finally, a low level of transparency regarding data and methodology often hampers re-analysis and cross-checking of reported findings by peers.ConclusionsThe difficulty of replicating meta-analytic results on independent data leads to the often conclusive nature of meta-analytic findings, and therefore a realistic assessment of the limitations of the respective analysis is pertinent. To this end, practically relevant quality criteria for readers to bear in mind when dealing with meta-analytic publications are summarized in a ten point checklist for a rough assessment of the quality of meta-analyses by the reader.

In this study, a series of rationally designed emissive phenanthrene derivatives were synthesized and their aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties in tetrahydrofuran (THF)/water mixtures were investigated. Two tetraphenylethene (TPE) segments were conjugated to both ends of the phenanthrene core at the para-positions and meta-positions, resulting in pTPEP and mTPEP derivatives, respectively. While the TPE-conjugated phenanthrene derivatives did not show any emission when dissolved in pure THF, they showed strong sky-blue emissions in water-THF mixtures, which is attributed to the restriction of intramolecular motions of TPE segments by aggregation. Furthermore, silica nanoparticles loaded with these AIE-active compounds were prepared and proved to be promising intracellular imaging agents.

In many real-life decision making (DM) situations, the available information is vague or imprecise. To adequately solve decision problems with vague or imprecise information, fuzzy set theory and aggregation operator theory have become powerful tools. In last three decades, DM theories and methods under fuzzy aggregation operator have been proposed and developed for effectively solving the DM problems and numerous applications have been reported in the literature. While various aggregation operators have been suggested and developed, there is a lack of research regarding systematic literature review and classification of study in this field. Regarding this, Web of Science database has been nominated and systematic and meta-analysis method called “PRISMA” has been proposed. Accordingly, a review of 312 published articles appearing in 33 popular journals related to fuzzy set theory, aggregation operator theory and DM approaches between July 1986 and June 2017 have been attained to reach a comprehensive review of DM methods and aggregation operator environment. Consequently, the selected published articles have been categorized by name of author(s), the publication year, technique, application area, country, research contribution and journals in which they appeared. The findings of this study found that, ordered weighted averaging (OWA) has been the highest frequently accessed more than other areas. This systematic review shows that the DM theories under fuzzy aggregation operator environment have received a great deal of interest from researchers and practitioners in many disciplines.

Background: Meta-analysis is an approach that combines findings from similar studies. The aggregation of study level data can provide precise estimates for outcomes of interest, allow for unique treatment comparisons, and explain the differences arising from conflicting study results. Proper meta-analysis includes five basic steps: identify relevant studies; extract summary data from each paper; compute study effect sizes, perform statistical analysis; and interpret and report the results. Objectives: This study aims to review meta-analysis methods and their assumptions, apply various meta-techniques to empirical data, and compare the results from each method. Methods: Three different meta-analysis techniques were applied to a dataset looking at the effects of the bacille Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccine on tuberculosis (TB). First, a fixed-effects model was applied; then a random-effects model; and third meta-regression with study-level covariates were added to the model. Overall and stratified results, by geographic latitude were reported. Results: All three techniques showed a statistically significant effects from the vaccination. However, once covariates were added, efficacy diminished. Independent variables, such as the latitude of the location in which the study was performed, appeared to be partially driving the results. Conclusions: Meta-analysis is useful for drawing general conclusions from a variety of studies. However, proper study and model selection are important to ensure the correct interpretation of results. Basic meta-analysis models are fixed-effects, random-effects, and meta-regression.

Considering the low coverage of roadside cooperative devices at the current time, automated driving should detect all road markings relevant to driving safety, such as traffic signs that tend to be of great variety but are fewer in number. In this work, we propose an innovative few-shot object detection framework, namely Meta-YOLO, whose challenge is to generalize to the unseen classes by using only a few seen classes. Simply integrating the YOLO mechanism into a meta-learning pipeline will encounter problems in terms of computational efficiency and mistake detection. Therefore, we construct a two-stage meta-learner ℱ model that can learn the learner initialization, the learner update direction and learning rate, all in a single meta-learning process. To facilitate deep networks with learning, the fidelity features of the targets improve the performance of meta-learner ℱ, but we also design a feature decorrelation module (FDM), which firstly transforms non-linear features into computable linear features based on RFF, and secondly perceives and removes global correlations by iteratively saving and reloading the features and sample weights of the model. We introduce a three-head module to learn global, local and patch correlations with the category detection result outputted by the aggregation in meta-learner ℱ, which endows a multi-scale ability with detector ϕ. In our experiments, the proposed algorithm outperforms the three benchmark algorithms and improves the mAP of few-shot detection by 39.8%.

Introduction Within dementia care, there remains a general lack of coherence in evidence-based knowledge on issues of importance for subjective experiences of quality of life in people with dementia. The aim of the meta-aggregation was to investigate experiences related to quality of life in people with dementia living in institutional settings. Method A meta-aggregation inspired by the Joanna Briggs Institute was undertaken. A systematic search was conducted in four databases and additional studies were found in the reference lists of the included studies. Only studies in English, Danish, Swedish, and Norwegian were considered, with publication dates from 2007 to 2018. Findings Ten original qualitative studies were included. Using critical appraisal, methodological quality was assessed. We extracted five main categories: acceptance and adaptation; autonomy; personhood; social connectedness; and activities. Conclusion Significant findings for future occupational therapy in dementia care concerned the importance of coming to terms with the illness and life situation, while being able to experience feelings of autonomy, independence, and personhood. Meaningful social relationships and activities, individualized flexible routines and regulations, and adjusted physical environments with room for privacy were also prioritized in order to achieve high quality of life.

Despite the existence of sophisticated statistical methods, systematic reviews regularly indicate that single-case experimental designs (SCEDs) are predominantly analyzed through visual tools. For the quantitative aggregation of results, different meta-analytical techniques are available, but specific visual tools for the meta-analysis of SCEDs are lacking. The present article therefore describes the use of violin plots as visual tools to represent the raw data. We first describe the underlying rationale of violin plots and their main characteristics. We then show how the violin plots can complement the statistics obtained in a quantitative meta-analysis. The main advantages of violin plots as visual tools in meta-analysis are (a) that they preserve information about the raw data from each study, (b) that they have the ability to visually represent data from different designs in one graph, and (c) that they enable the comparison of score distributions from different experimental phases from different studies.

The author describes a meta-analysis of econometric studies that estimated the elasticity of selective sales or market share to price. The literature review yielded 367 suitable price elasticities from about 220 different brands/markets. The results indicate that the price elasticity is significantly negative and, in absolute value, eight times larger than the advertising elasticity obtained from a prior meta-analysis. The omission of distribution or quality, the use of only cross-sectional data, and temporal aggregation lead to severe biases in the estimates of price elasticity. The elasticity also differs significantly over the brand life cycle, product categories, estimation methods, and countries.

Spatiotemporal and motion feature representations are the key to video action recognition. Typical previous approaches are to utilize 3D CNNs to cope with both spatial and temporal features, but they suffer from huge computations. Other approaches are to utilize (1+2)D CNNs to learn spatial and temporal features in an efficient way, but they neglect the importance of motion representations. To overcome problems with previous approaches, we propose a novel block which makes it possible to alleviate the aforementioned problems, since our block can capture spatial and temporal features more faithfully and efficiently learn motion features. This proposed block includes Motion Excitation (ME), Multi-view Excitation (MvE), and Densely Connected Temporal Aggregation (DCTA). The purpose of ME is to encode feature-level frame differences; MvE is designed to enrich spatiotemporal features with multiple view representations adaptively; and DCTA is to model long-range temporal dependencies. We inject the proposed building block, which we refer to as the META block (or simply “META”), into 2D ResNet-50. Through extensive experiments, we demonstrate that our proposed method architecture outperforms previous CNN-based methods in terms of “Val Top-1 %” measure with Something-Something v1 and Jester datasets, while the META yielded competitive results with the Moment-in-Time Mini dataset.

The aggregation of operational active and reactive power flexibilities as the feasible operation region (FOR) is a main component of a hierarchical multi-voltage-level grid control as well as the cooperation of transmission and distribution system operators at vertical system interconnections. This article presents a new optimization-based aggregation approach, based on a modified particle swarm optimization (PSO) and compares it to non-linear and linear programming. The approach is to combine the advantages of stochastic and optimization-based methods to achieve an appropriate aggregation of flexibilities while obtaining additional meta information during the iterative solution process. The general principles for sampling an FOR are introduced in a survey of aggregation methods from the literature and the adaptation of the classic optimal power flow problem. The investigations are based on simulations of the Cigré medium voltage test system and are divided into three parts. The improvement of the classic PSO algorithm regarding the determination of the FOR are presented. The most suitable of four sampling strategies from the literature is identified and selected for the comparison of the optimization methods. The analysis of the results reveals a better performance of the modified PSO in sampling the FOR compared to the other optimization methods.
