Blue spaces is associated with self-rated health (SRH), but little is known about the pathways underlying this association among Chinese urban elderly individuals. Based on neighborhood effect theory, this study examined the relationship between neighborhood blue spaces and SRH among elderly individuals using data from a questionnaire survey conducted in Guangzhou, remote sensing images, street views, and environmental information in the context of a Chinese megacity. In addition, multilevel linear model and mediating effect model empirical analyses were performed. Results showed that first, the SRH of the elderly was associated with individual- and neighborhood-level factors. Second, the multilevel mediation model revealed that multiple biopsychosocial pathways existed between neighborhood blue spaces and the SRH of the elderly, specifically, the blue space characteristics related to the SRH of the elderly via the mediating effect of stress. Third, owing to demographic characteristics and socioeconomic status, the stratified analyses also indicated a strong association between neighborhood blue spaces and SRH outcomes in the older and low-income groups. The mediating effect of stress in the age and income groups was also observed, and the mediation pathways and group differences were confirmed in the context of Chinese cities. This research enriches the empirical literature on blue spaces and elderly health from a multidisciplinary perspective and suggests the need for “healthy neighborhood” and “health-aging” planning in Chinese settings.

Semantic Web Services (SWS) aim at the automated discovery, selection and orchestration of Web services based on comprehensive, machine-interpretable semantic descriptions. The latter are, in principle, deployed by multiple possible actors (i.e., service providers and service consumers); thus, a high level of heterogeneity between distinct SWS annotations is expected. Therefore, mediation between concurrent semantic representations of services is a key requirement to fully implement the SWS vision. In this paper, the authors argue that “semantic-level mediation” is necessary to identify semantic similarities across distinct SWS representations. The authors formalize and implement a mediation approach based on “Mediation Spaces” (MS), which enables the implicit representation of semantic similarities among distinct SWS descriptions. As a result, given a specific SWS approach and the proposed MS, a general purpose algorithm is implemented to empower SWS selection with the automatic computation of semantic similarities between a given SWS request and a set of SWS offers. A prototypical application illustrates the approach and highlights the benefits w.r.t. current mediation approaches.

This study investigated the mediating role of neighborhood satisfaction and use of outdoor spaces in the effects of the physical environment on mental well-being. Four planning/design-related aspects of the environment were examined: perceived proximity of home to green/social spaces, open lawn with trees, and building-dominated spaces as well as perceived barriers to neighborhood use. A random sample of 434 Chicago residents participated in a photo survey. The results of linear regression modeling and mediation analyses support the hypothesis that satisfaction with quality of public space and frequency of use of green/social spaces have a significant mediating role in the relationship between nearby environmental attributes and mental well-being. Perceived barriers were also found to have both direct and indirect effects on mental well-being. Recognition of the differential roles played by environmental attributes, neighborhood satisfaction, and use patterns can help guide planners/designers to create outdoor spaces that enhance urban residents’ mental well-being.

Mediation is a crucial element in the learning process, especially in a virtual environment, whether it corresponds to formal, non-formal, or informal education. This paper aims to expose the research on mediation and learning in virtual environments published between 2015 and 2020. A total of 299 articles were identified that address the topic of mediation and learning in virtual environments from different fields and approaches. The results that respond to the research questions are presented. The study was carried out with the Web of Science (WOS) and Scopus databases, and inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied to obtain the articles under study. The Systematic Literature Mapping (SLM) method was used to answer questions raised for analysis. Information was extracted from the articles regarding the method used, the most cited articles, geographical distribution of the authors by country, the journals and impact factor, type of mediation, and finally, the trends and spaces where mediation takes place. The results show studies tending toward technological mediation and factors such as interaction, collaboration, communication, and discussion, among others. The practical implications are oriented to show the mediating factor from the pedagogical and technological perspectives and its contribution to achieve meaningful learning.

Abstract Critics of digitally mediated labour platforms (often called the “sharing” or “gig economy”) have focused on the character and extent of the control exerted by these platforms over both workers and customers, and in particular on the precarizing impact on the workers on whose labor the services depend. Less attention has been paid to the specifically spatial character of the forms of work targeted by mobile digital platforms. The production and maintenance of urban social space has always been dependent, to a large degree, on work that involves the crossing of spatial boundaries - particularly between public and private spaces, but also crossing spaces segregated by class, race, and gender. Delivery workers, cabdrivers, day labourers, home care providers, and similar boundary-crossers all perform spatial work: the work of moving between and connecting spaces physically, experientially, and through representation. Spatial work contributes to the production and reproduction of social space; it is also productive of three specific, though interrelated, products: physical movement from one place to another; the experience of this movement; and the articulation of these places, experiences, and movements with visions of society and of the social. Significantly, it is precisely such spatial work, and its products, which mobile digital platforms seek most urgently to transform. Drawing on several recent studies of “ridesharing” (or soft cab) labour platforms, I interrogate the impact of digital mediation on the actual practices involved in spatial work. I argue that the roll-out of digital labour platforms needs to be understood in terms of a struggle over the production of social space.

Shot in a blue washed monochrome, the city of Tsukamoto Shinya‘s A Snake of June, stages a number of highly mediated sadomasochistic sexual encounters within its public spaces. This article examines how the forms of mediation offered within the narrative by both architecture and technology as well as the mediation offered by the film‘s extraordinary blueness articulates the intimate relationship between sexuality and modernity. Following on from the work of Maurice Merleau-Ponty, it combines a phenomenological and dialectical approach to develop an analysis of sexual pleasure and sexual politics which can account for the embodied interaction of urban subjects and urban spaces.

Within the scope of the evolution of technologies, there are more and more heritage and cultural spaces that include in their dissemination and mediation technological tools, specifically and significantly, those catalogued as digital tools. This study takes into account heritage spaces that have permanently included digital tools as mediation resources in archaeological spaces. To this end, the case of the archaeological site of Empúries, Catalonia, has been taken as an example, where an evaluation of these digital tools has been carried out based on their capacity to create and transmit knowledge to users, on the understanding of the material remains present in the site and on the satisfaction generated by these tools. This research is of an exploratory nature and has been carried out using a qualitative methodology. The aim is to establish to what extent the technological or digital tools (specifically, the audio guide and Virtual Reality) help to understand the material remains present in the archaeological site, and the extent to which the digital tools chosen in the mediation of the heritage encourage interaction between visitor and environment is analysed. The results show that it is not possible to say that digital tools significantly increase visitor satisfaction, since the average response of all visitors, regardless of the visit made, is positive.

Within the communicative possibilities of graphics, we focus on the challenge proposed by choreographic notation. This practice combines the technical, the artistic and the semiotic in an attempt to retain the volatility of gesture. To address this choreographic relationship, we study public art pieces that rely on graphic language to reach the users of urban space. These allow us to identify which elements, common in the context of the city, are recovered from a choreographic vision to activate citizens' reflection and attention and to propose new uses for the spaces they pass through. In recent decades, dance and movement have gained a place in public space through institutional mediation. In response to this reality, we seek to understand how graphics is proposed as a mediating language between cultural spaces and the dwellers of the city.

The aim of this article is to identify and describe the interactional flow dynamics between participants of a course developed using web technology mediation by a consortium of graduate programs in different Brazilian states in the first half of 2015. Based on the analysis of multimedia records on the development of the course, three interaction spaces, or locales, are identified and described between the participants of the course (Skype, live-and-in-person learning classes and Wikispaces), understood as heterogeneous spaces, but interwoven through technological mediation. Based on the affordances and constraints of the technologies used, as well as multi-scale topography observed in these spaces, the interactional flow at and through each level is not linear, as it is governed by legitimacy and authority parameters that not only refer to the conventional school participation modes, but also point to more complex ones. With the prevalence of mental health problems among college students, perceptual recovery and the sensory dimensions of perception (PSD) have emerged as crucial environment-related factors for psychological well-being. However, there has been relatively limited research on how these factors directly and indirectly impact the restoration experience of college students in green spaces on campuses. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the influence of college students’ intrinsic motivation on their psychological well-being when exposed to campus green spaces. Special attention was given to the role of solitude and perceptual recovery in this process. Research Methodology: Based on a literature review and field research, we classified campus green spaces into eight types based on perceptual dimensions. We collected 550 questionnaires on campus, and the data processing involved structural equation modeling (SEM) and mediation analysis. Findings: A positive correlation was found between perceived sensory dimensions and the recovery experience. College students’ perceptual recovery and ability to be alone emerged as mediating variables in this process. In essence, this study sheds light on the mechanism through which intrinsic motivation impacts the mental health of college students when they engage with campus green spaces.

Abstract This article addresses issues of multilingualism in domestic violence support services, building on Tipton (2017a) and findings from a small qualitative study involving an organization in the North West of England. The aim is to shed light on how organizations construct multilingual spaces, the role played by language service provisions in the mediation of such spaces, and how interpreters handle the specificities of working with victims given the lack of available specialist training. The concept of communicative repertoire (following Blommaert and Backus 2011) is introduced to support analysis of supported and autonomous forms of communication in relation to the semiotic practices of survival in their broadest sense, casting new light on the organization’s handling of multilingual service delivery and the role of interpreter mediation.

How to design new forms of on line behavioural and emotional interactions in digital spaces, shared virtual environments? What are the perceptual, behavioural and cognitive processes involved when actions, emotions or information are shared between several co-present users? What are the aesthetic and sociological implications of these new forms of spatial mediations? What is the influence of spatial location and emotional valence of pictures on the capacity to memorize the pictures? For this study of perceptual and cognitive processes involved when sharing and memorizing emotions online in digital spaces" we have brought together a multidisciplinary team of researchers in Art and New Media, Cognitive Sciences and Psychiatry. Our goal is to assess the relevance and limitations of new forms of mediation in online- shared spaces (also commonly referred to as "virtual worlds"). This paper presents a preliminary account of the paradigm. Here we focus on the influence of copresence on the emotional perception of fine arts in a digital environment. This experience was developed by the "Spatial Media" group of EnsadLab in partnership with the Collège de France, supported and funded by PSL* Research University.

The European Network for Cinema and Media Studies (NECS) held its fifth annual conference “Urban Mediations” from June 24 to 27, 2010 in the European Capital of Culture 2010, Istanbul. A wide variety of scholars and researchers in the field of cinema, film, and media studies, but also archivists or film and media professionals were invited. The broad scope theme of “urban mediations” provided ample opportunity for extensive analysis and discussion of media and urbanity theories by the attendees. In more than 80 panels, with four talks each, various questions could be discussed. For example: How are city spaces represented and created in different media? What urban practices and aesthetics develop when using “media”? To what extent do new media forms influence future urban developments or make them possible in the first place? How does media shape city-human interaction?

Translingual writers, in attempting to navigate between languages and the associated social contexts, bring both linguistic and cultural translation into play as processes fostering encounter and transformation. This paper considers the thematic function of translation within recent translingual narrative, where it appears both as a literary topos and as an ideological subtext. It attempts to illustrate how, contrary to postcolonial writers whose narratives self-consciously engage with their own linguistic or cultural hybridity by thematizing the power relationships between different linguistic strands, the narratives of transnational/ translingual writers explore new identities by constructing new dialogic spaces in which language choice is located outside the oppositional model set up by the traditional binaries of postcolonial theorizing. Through a reading of the work of Amara Lakhous, a contemporary Italian writer, born and educated in Algiers and writing in both Arabic and Italian, it is argued that translingual works suggest an understanding of translation as not only something that happens after the story ends, but is a crucial part of the narrative itself; one that generates plot and meaning, and is indispensable to an understanding of the concrete processes of cultural translation that shape relationships, identities, and interactions globally.

Based on approaches of digital ethnography and using the work of Sofia da Silva as an example, we pose reflections on future shifts and innovations in the context of qualitative educational and biographical research: What methodological questions arise when current educational science objects are viewed from a (post-)digital perspective? We assume, among other things, that due to the interweaving of analogue and digital worlds new forms of biographization emerge, which require a theory-generating exploration of hybrid modes of experience as well as of the embedded interrelation of, for example, ‘body’, ‘education’, and ‘biography’. This could be achieved, for example, by a stronger mediation of ethnographic and biographical research approaches, or through an investigation of the connection between digital everyday practices, digitally mediated prefigurations and biographizations.

Parents of transnational sojourner families, who stay temporarily in a country other than their own, navigate across online and offline spaces to mediate their children’s socialization into the linguistic competence they need for both contexts, namely the host country and the homeland. Simultaneously, their children establish agency in developing their own linguistic competence. However, language socialization studies have rarely examined the interconnection between parents’ mediation and children’s agency across both online and offline spaces of socialization. In this light, this study presents an ethnographic study that examined parents’ mediation and a child’s agency in the online and offline language socialization of an Indonesian-Muslim transnational sojourner family in the United States, which is underexplored in language research. Additionally, using Darvin and Norton’s (2015) investment model, it explored how the family’s identities, ideologies, and capital structured the child’s language socialization. Data were collected from observations, interviews, and artifacts that depict language practices within the family. In-depth thematic analysis through triangulation of the various forms of data was conducted to obtain trustworthiness. The findings demonstrated that parents’ mediation and their child’s agency across online and offline spaces contributed to the development of the child’s linguistic and multimodal repertoires while also strengthening the family’s local and cross-border connections. The findings also demonstrated competing priorities in identity as well as in social and cultural capital investment, which were eventually resolved. The study provides a deeper understanding of transnational sojourners’ language investment in their imagined communities, which span across the host and the home countries.

Social media’s technological developments have made it possible to extensively share visual content such as photos and videos to represent idealized beauty. Many studies conclude negative effects of Instagram on Social anxiety. However, the mechanism through which Instagram affects psychological wellbeing of youngsters is not studied adequately. Using Street's (2003) three-stage model of interactive media use, quantitative research methodology was designed. A survey of university youngsters (N=384) through a set of questions is conducted. Study followed a cross-sectional non-experimental research approach. Mediation path from Instagram usage to social anxiety was analyzed statistically applying Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). Investigations revealed that the direct relationship of Instagram usage with social anxiety was not significant. However, Instagram usage was linked to social anxiety through mediating factors. Social comparison as a proximal outcome and self-esteem as intermediate outcome were the mediating factors supported mediation framework. Gender and age were found insignificant in the relationship between the youngsters’ Instagram usage and social anxiety. Finding would be helpful in developing a practical mechanism to cope with mental health issues of youngsters due to the use of online spaces in digital age. Keywords: Instagram use, Three-stage model, Social comparison, Self-esteem, Social anxiety

his Merleau-pontyan phenomenological essay shares fundamental dimensions of Paulo Freire’s legacy for school and non-school education. The text deals with popular methodological mediations/strategies that promote the dialogical construction of knowledge and awareness. The objective is to present relevant aspects of this historical-epistemological problematization based on readings, studies and research carried out by the Pedagogical Mediation and Citizenship Research Group from the Vale do Rio dos Sinos University - UNISINOS, coordinated by PhD Professor Danilo Streck. The dialogue articulates Freire’s readings with discussions conducted by Gohn (2006). The challenge of the necessary interface between school and non-school spaces in order to strengthen the emancipatory potential of the Freirean theoretical-methodological legacy in the different pedagogical times-places is highlighted.

Contemporary practices of sex and intimacy are increasingly digitally mediated. In this paper, we identify two distinctly spatial effects of these mediations. First, the digital extends the spaces of sex/uality beyond the immediately proximate, simultaneously expanding the potential for non-human object choice in intimate encounters. Second, the digital intensifies the experiential fidelity of intimate encounters by folding the remote into the spatially immediate, such that non-proximate intimate relations with human subjects as well as non-human objects may feel more proximate. We articulate these effects by building on and contributing to developments in the geographies of encounter, which allows us to bring together theories and conceptual framings of intimacy, digitality and sexuality in a uniquely spatial register. These effects of extension and intensification resonate in a selection of empirical examples of digitally mediated sex/uality that we place along continuums of more-and-less human and more-and-less proximate. These continuums comprise the conceptual axes of a heuristic framework that we advance to both (i) capture particular points at which configurations of spaces, practices and subject/object choices of sex crystallize given conditions of pervasive digital mediation, and (ii) provoke further interrogations of the multiple ways in which sex, sexuality and intimacy are recast by the digital.

The article is dedicated to the integrative essence of the language personality of a representative of the Ukrainian school of literary translation Ivan Babych. It is pointed out that I. Babych, as a person of European culture whose native land was France, was the disseminator of its fundamental values in Ukraine. At the same time, he promoted national culture, the Ukrainian word in French-speaking countries. Two cultural spaces have determined the specific function of intercultural mediation, in the context of which the linguistic personality of the master of literary translation should be considered.

Remote technologies and digitally mediated representations now serve as a central mode of interaction with hard-to-reach sea spaces and places. This article reviews the literature on varied scholarly engagements with the sea and on the oceanic application of technologies—among them geographic information systems, remotely operated vehicles, and autonomous underwater vehicles—that allow people to envision and engage with deep and distant oceanic spaces. I focus on the extension of a digital and disembodied human presence in the oceans and the persistence of frontier fictions, in which the sea figures as a site of future-oriented possibilities. Finally, I ask what the emphasis on “seeing” through technological mediation means for how we imagine vast spaces, and consider how these elements of the oceanic imaginary can be productively complicated by drawing attention to the materiality of the oceans and the scalar politics of dynamic spaces.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the topic of parents who work on a flexible basis and use coworking facilities to find a work–life balance and overcome work–family conflicts. Design/methodology/approach The author uses a qualitative approach to explore the research questions. The first part of the empirical research undertakes an ethnographical approach in carrying out the unobstructed participant observation within five European coworking spaces targeted at improving comprehension of the spaces’ mediation mechanisms and development of supportive interactions. The second part traverses into conducting unstructured interviews with parents who work on a flexible basis and use a coworking space as their daily workplace. Findings This research paper reveals that flexible workers who found themselves juggling work tasks and family obligations tend to seek better conditions that assist them in tackling conflictual situations and, in addition, enhance their social lives to create further career opportunities. Coworking spaces are thus perceived as optimal workplaces by working parents in that they can find stability and scale their social networks within. Moreover, the continually evolving user interactions resulting from effective mediation mechanisms let these individuals find emotional support, increase productivity and exchange knowledge. Originality/value While the coworking industry is rapidly evolving and the academia is keener on investigating the field, the subcategory of work–life and family care within these collaborative environments is virtually unresearched. This paper provides valuable insight into the topic and serves as a knowledge base for the future exploration of this field.

With recent declines in air quality, the significance of urban green spaces and their ecological functions have rapidly increased, especially with regard to the reduction of particulate matter. Various investigations regarding particle reduction in urban green spaces have been conducted; however, specific guidelines to establish empirical data for green spaces and to inform related policies are still lacking. Thus, this study aims to categorize experts’ perceptions of green spaces through Q-methodology and to identify ways to form a consensus, establish policies in the design and construction process, ultimately aiming to enhance particle reduction effects in urban green spaces. As a result, experts’ perceptions were classified into three categories: ‘active support,’ ‘skeptical,’ and ‘passive support’ groups. Experts’ opinions on the particle reduction effects of urban green areas are overarchingly agreed upon; however, the priorities involved and methods used in augmenting green space integration require further analysis and mediation. Additionally, further empirical evidence should be accumulated on the particulate matter reduction effects of urban green areas, including the quantification of particle concentration reduction in urban green spaces and considerations for policy establishment in design and construction.

This article examines the visibility of communities of demonstration and protest in live happening and in digital reproduction – how a protesting community becomes seen, individuals unseen and how theatrical elements are employed and deployed to enhance and augment such visibility as a scene. Looking at protests by Extinction Rebellion (XR), I observe how heightened performance/theatricality saturates their demonstrations and spawns heightened visibility. This hyper-articulates their messages as optically charged, ready for representation in photography, video and audio that can echo through media channels. Instigated with an intention for a technologically reproduced and mediatized after-event – a digital afterlife. In this sense, theatricalizing the demonstration event as performance scene makes it, and any associated messages, ready to transcend event time–space and become a demonstration hyper-object, following Timothy Morton. That is, through theatrical performance their message/statement/community becomes part of a massive entity that exists beyond local scales of space and time. As accessible, temporally extensive data such communities and messages exist far beyond the live protest. While not an object per se, XR’s messages and their affective impact contaminate and spread by being commented on, seen, retweeted, hash-tagged, forwarded, printed and so on in print and digital media spaces. In so doing, they reach far greater audiences than those at the demonstration event, amplifying their virtual spaces with the community’s application of theatricality working both as a catalyst and carrier.

Abstract Introduction We investigated associations between exposure to tobacco outlets within activity spaces and daily tobacco use, and whether exposure to adults or peers using tobacco mediate these relationships. Methods We used Geographic Ecological Momentary Assessment data over 14 days from 85 youth aged 16–20 years in eight mid-sized California city areas. Tobacco outlet addresses and global positioning systems locations were geocoded and activity spaces were constructed by joining sequential points. We assessed daily number of tobacco outlets within 50 or 100 m of activity space polylines and number of minutes participants were within 50 or 100 m of tobacco outlets each day; daily use of tobacco; and whether participants saw (1) adults and (2) people their age (peers) using tobacco each day. Results Controlling for demographics, results of multilevel structural equation models showed no association between number of tobacco outlets within 50 m of polylines and tobacco use (probit regression coefficient: 0.01, p = .82). However, we found evidence of an indirect effect (p = .001) through daily exposure to peers using tobacco. Specifically, greater number of tobacco outlets within 50 m of polylines was positively associated with seeing peers use tobacco (probit regression coefficient: 0.10, p < .001). In turn, seeing peers use tobacco was positively associated with tobacco use on that day (probit regression coefficient: 2.23, p < .001). Similar results were found for number of tobacco outlets within 100 m of polylines. Conclusions Exposure to tobacco outlets within activity spaces affects youth tobacco use through daily exposure to peers who use tobacco. Implications Using real-time-ordered data, this article examines whether exposure to adults and peers using tobacco mediate associations between exposure to tobacco outlets within activity spaces and daily tobacco use among youth. Results suggest that exposure to tobacco outlets within activity spaces affects daily tobacco use through exposure to peers who use tobacco. These findings provide additional significant support for policy makers who are considering regulating the number and density of tobacco retailers and point to the importance of interventions focused on peer tobacco use and youths’ daily environments to reduce tobacco use.

Posthuman research methodologies center nonhuman actors and spaces. In this paper, we argue that technological mediation is a key component in a move toward the exploration of posthuman subjectivity in research and the restructuring of dominant understandings of gender and sexualized difference. Drawing on a cellphilm (cellphone + film production) based project with queer, trans, and non-binary youth in New Brunswick, Canada, we seek to center queer stories and experiences to speak back to their erasures in school spaces and landscapes. We argue that in researching with queer, trans, and non-binary youth in the Anthropocene, cellphilm method offers us the opportunity to think critically and creatively about environments, inclusions, and queering environmental futures (Lebel, 2019) within schooling structures.

Purpose: This research aims to analyze the role of mediation in the justice system as an effective and efficient settlement method. The main research focus is to identify the impact of integrated mediation in District Court procedures, as well as launching the role of mediators as third parties who support the settlement process. This research also aims to explore the challenges and challenges that may be faced in implementing mediation in a competitive environment. Theoretical framework: The theoretical framework of this research is based on the concept of mediation as a settlement method involving a neutral third party. Focusing on the role of mediation in reducing the backlog of cases in court and strengthening the role of non-judicial institutions is the basis for the analysis. This research takes a legal and practical approach to explore the potential of mediation in increasing efficiency and justice in the Indonesian justice system. Design/methodology/approach: The research method used is normative legal research, focusing on the analysis of legal theories and norms written in legal documents such as laws, court decisions, legal literature, and other legal documents. In this study, the researcher will explore, analyze, and present information found in legal documents as a basis for formulating understanding and interpretation related to specific topics or issues in the legal domain. Findings: Mediation contributes positively to conflict resolution by creating open dialogue spaces, identifying root problems, and promoting justice. Factors such as mediator skills, the sustainability of the mediation process, and active participation of the parties contribute to the success of mediation. This research also presents perspectives from the parties involved, showing their satisfaction with the outcomes of mediation. Research, Practical & Social implications: This research provides a theoretical contribution by enriching understanding of the role of mediation as an alternative method of dispute resolution. By emphasizing mediator skills, this research expands insight into how mediators can influence dispute resolution dynamics. The practical implications of this research include increasing the efficiency of dispute resolution, improving relations between disputing parties, and creating sustainable solutions. This may help strengthen the argument for greater application of mediation in court, business, and other conflict resolution contexts. Originality/value: The study contributes to a better understanding of the role of mediation in conflict resolution, providing diverse perspectives from stakeholders, and laying the groundwork for improving mediation practices in various contexts.

Understood as active in the mediation of knowledge and values, museum spaces have become a growing field of investigation in the course of the spatial turn within the museum studies. In this special issue, we focus on the transformation of museum space. To this end, we introduce a specific theoretical framework, the refiguration of spaces, which aims to think spatial transformation in a non-linear, multiscalar and multiple way: The basic assumption is not to presume a sequential historic transformation of spatial figurations of museums – from chambers of wonders, through universal museums and white cubes towards interactive museums – in which a new type always replaces the previous one, but rather to draw our attention onto the dense juxtaposition of these figurations, which continue to be drawn upon, competing to reshape museums, and informing our spatial understanding of the museum of the future. In this editorial, we firstly (re)trace the different spatial-aesthetic figurations of museums and work out the limitations of a transformational framework. We introduce then the refiguration theory and its potential, before presenting the seven contributions of the special issue and synthesising their findings about the conflicting and shifting multiple spatialities of museums. We end our editorial with a speculative reflection about the futures of refiguring museums.

Slut shaming is defined as the stigmatization of an individual based on his or her appearance, sexual availability, and actual or perceived sexual behavior. It can take place in physical or virtual spaces. The present study questions the impact of this form of sexism in virtual spaces on girls and interrogates the interaction between the values that girls integrate through their life experiences, especially in the family sphere, and slut shaming victimization. We conducted a paper-pencil questionnaire with 605 girls between the ages of 10 and 18 (average age: 15.18 years). Our data confirm the impact of slut shaming on the physical and psychological well-being of young girls as early as adolescence. Second, mediation analyses provide insights into the revictimization and Poly-victimization processes, from childhood adverse experiences to sexist victimization in virtual spaces and their combined impact on the physical and psychic health of girls. Finally, we address prevention strategies and the involvement of socializing institutions in the deconstruction of gender stereotypes.

This cross-sectional study investigated whether physical activity, social cohesion, and loneliness mediate the association between time spent visiting green spaces and perceived mental health and vitality. Questionnaire data were collected from 3,948 residents from 124 neighborhoods across four European cities. Multilevel linear regression analysis revealed positive, but weak, associations between time spent visiting green space and Medical Outcome Study Short Form (SF-36) mental health and vitality score, which suggest small mental health benefits. Single mediation analyses showed that different indicators of physical activity (total, during leisure time, and walking during leisure time), social cohesion, and loneliness were mediators. Multiple mediation analyses showed that physical activity during leisure time and loneliness may explain about 25% of the relationship. The unmediated part of the association suggests that other mediators may explain the association.

Coworking spaces emerged in the mid-2000s as collaborative workplaces that actively supported teleworkers and self-employed knowledge workers who shared various (work) environments to interlace themselves in supportive networks, tackle isolation, positively influence well-being, and collaboratively participate in knowledge-sharing activities. However, with the swift popularisation of the coworking model by 2020, newly established flexible office spaces have begun to refer to themselves as community-based workplaces even though they lacked the capacity to support their users’ interactions and collaborative work. Therefore, the purpose of the paper is to explore how coworking spaces have transformed from community-based environments to a flexible place of work where establishing a collaborative community is not an organisational priority. The following exploratory research investigates a sample of 13 coworking spaces in Prague, the Czech Republic, and considers their capacity for supporting interactions and collaborative processes between their users. The results uncovered significant differences between coworking spaces, their spatial designs, the presence of mediation mechanisms, and the frequency of interactions between users, and suggest that the handful of sampled coworking environments misuse the notion of community. In that context, the following study indicates that contemporary coworking spaces can revert to community washing to deliberately pursue economic self-interest rather than support decentralised peer-to-peer exchange that would lead to developing a coworking community.

In this piece, I discuss the creation of ethnoperformance as a method of exploring and representing online spaces. I highlight the need for writing that acknowledges the influence of technology in online communication and argue for the suitability of ethnodrama as a writing method. In particular, I focus on bugchasers – men who fetishize HIV – and their online discussions. Bugchasers’ comments to a forum, articulated as a five act ethnoperformance, serve as a case study to showcase how this form of writing allows users to discuss their negotiations of fantasy/reality while also acknowledging the uncertainty of online spaces and the mediation by technology. I finally defend the view that the visceral reactions ethnodrama produces generate interesting reflexive standpoints from which to research stigmatized practices and ideas.

The Prague Quadrennial (PQ), the world’s largest exhibition of stage (performance) design, was held for the 13th time from 17-28 June 2015. This article outlines the historical development of PQ, from its “conceptual” beginnings in the 1930s and real beginnings in socialist Czechoslovakia, to the present day. Our focus is the variety of curatorial practices at PQ 2015 that perform the delicate process of “translation” of live performances into static exhibits and “mediation” between the stage (performing space) and the gallery (exhibition space), taking into account the transformations of the “art world” that is increasingly bringing those spaces together.

Gestures are an inherent part of all face-to-face interactions. Nevertheless, their role in interpreter-mediated events has so far been marginalized in the field of interpreting studies. Based on a multimodal corpus of interactions in child psychiatry with migrant patients, this research focuses on the use of iconic gestures, their role in bridging the linguistic gap and in performing cultural mediation. The results of the study suggest that gestures play a part in the construction of shared semantic spaces and act as a marker of interpreting fidelity, hence, becoming corner stones in the trust-building process between the migrant patients and the public service interpreters.

The pandemic generated by COVID-19 is one of the most complex challenges humanity has faced in recent years. This study aims to explore the levels of dispositional optimism, resilience and psychological well-being in the sociodemographic and economic situation produced during the state of alarm and to investigate the resilience mediation between optimism and psychological well-being. The sample included 566 volunteers from Spain (73.5% women; M = 40.2 years, SD = 12.8). An ad hoc questionnaire was applied to request socioeconomic data and dispositional optimism (LOT-R). Resilience and psychological well-being were, respectively, evaluated by the Ryff scale and the Wagnild and Young scale. The results show that older and people with higher educational levels are more optimistic and have better psychological well-being. Well-being is also greater in married, divorced and widowed people and in those who have lived in outdoor spaces. However, those with spaced housing were more optimistic. Finally, it was found that the most optimistic people have better psychological well-being and that this is increased by the mediation process exercised by the ability to overcome adversity, provided age and educational level are controlled. It can be concluded that the design of preventive programs focused on improving strengths, positive emotions and skills in the population would be convenient to protect mental health.

Background: The association of green spaces such as urban public parks and mental health might vary according to personal characteristics and characteristics of the park and be mediated by the use of the park. Aims: We investigate the association between urban public park coverage and mental health in adult women, the moderation of this association by personal and park-related characteristics, and the mediation of the association by use of public space. Methods: Combining data from a cross-sectional survey of the adult female population of Tijuana (Mexico) in 2014, and a study of public spaces in 2013, we analyzed the association between park coverage in buffers of 400 and 800 m from participants’ homes and score in the Center for Epidemiologic Studies-Depression scale (CES-D). We tested for mediation by use of park and interaction of urban park coverage with personal and park characteristics. Results: Urban public park coverage in the 400-m buffer had an inverse association with CES-D score that was moderated by age (significant only for younger participants), with no evidence of mediation. Park coverage in the 800-m buffer also had an inverse association with CES-D score, moderated by age and occupation (significant for younger participants and homemakers), and a mediated association was also observed. There was no interaction between park coverage and park characteristics in their association with CES-D score. Conclusion: Our results confirm the potential of public parks to improve mental health and suggest that this effect could be more important at some stages in the life course for women. The upper-middle-income, Latin American country setting adds to the current knowledge that is mostly based on high-income countries.

In this successful one-year extracurricular project, I implemented the pedagogy of multiliteracies to address discouraging trends and under-recognized ideas uncovered by asking critical questions about the practices and purposes of teaching language and literacy with games. The student, with my help, played games, analyzed texts, explored academic concepts, and actively participated on a gaming website. What and how she learned was investigated using session transcripts, textual analysis work, the participatory project, concept maps, questionnaires, interviews, and language tests. Key findings were: (1) careful integration of goals, activities and games resulted in literacy, intellectual and participatory development, (2) materials and teacher mediation helped her learn and accomplish more than she could individually, (3) learning occurred mostly around games, not during games, (4) multimodality and affinity spaces contributed to broad linguistic exploration and better understanding, (5) learning repertoires were extended and elements were transferred, (6) she struggled with some textual meanings, some sociocultural connections and some assignments. The teacher’s role is described in detail. Language teaching and learning with games can evolve by integrating important aspects of goal-setting, pedagogical frameworks, materials, active teacher mediation, multimodality, multiple learning spaces and a broader consideration of games. I challenge researchers to broaden their horizons. I guide teachers by sharing frameworks, materials and accounts of interactions with the student.

The aim of this study was to examine the biological and urban environment variables that associate with physical activity (PA) in adolescents. After this, to examine the interrelationship between biological, urban environment variables and PA in structural equation analysis. This was a cross-sectional study with an adolescents’ randomized sample. Measures included PA (steps per day by pedometers); self-report questionnaire; geographical location; ‘geocoding’ process; and direct observation and cardiorespiratory fitness (by 6-min run test). Linear and binary logistic regression models were tested. In addition, moderation and mediation analysis were tested. The sample consisted of 236 adolescents (61.9% girls) aged 14 to 18 years. The commuting to school was associated with residence distance to school (OR = 6.41; CI95%: 1.01-40.80) and walkability (OR = 1.40; CI95%: 1.02-1.94). The gender moderates the relationship between walkability and commuting to school, association only in girls (OR = 1.72; p < 0.05). The relationship between the use of public spaces and PA was reduced (Δβ = -1320.6 steps/day; p < 0.05) in the presence of cardiorespiratory fitness (mediation effect). In conclusion, adolescents’ PA is associated with the use of public spaces, but this relation is mediated by cardiorespiratory fitness. In addition, PA is associated with commuting to school. This commuting is associated with residence distance to school and walkability just in girls.

The article examines a particular religious worldview by taking language as the locus of investigation. It scrutinizes how the social imaginaries of dominion, mediation and reception find its articulation in the lyric poetry of religious groups living and praying in the mountain of Banahaw, a mountain regarded by Christian Filipinos as sacred. The meanings of these imaginaires are not just adoption of Christian teachings or adaptation of colonial religious structure but a manifestation of how people constructed an identity borne out of the dialectics between geographical location and human narrative. Thus, seen from this perspective, the presence of these religious cults on the slope of the mountain is not only a sign of flight from the oppressive colonial authorities in the past but a localization of Christianity. Second, their reconstruction of the spaces of the mountain, identifying them as real spaces of salvation is an attempt to configure an effective narrative of place away from the center and dominant history of Christianity in the Philippines thus weaving its own salvation history and in a way constructing its own historical consciousness. Lastly, the ethos and pathos of these religious groups manifest the co-inherence of sacramental and ethical perspectives. The confluence of meaning of the sacred rituals and ethics provides the idea that the sacrality of the mountain is a result of relationship between actions, conceptions and physical attributes.

- Ivan Pupolizio's book La mediazione familiare in Italia (Family Mediation in Italy) is the latest in a series that testifies to the increasing interest at work in Italy in topics of alternative conflict solving. The theoretical approach adopted to the topic is accompanied by evidence from professional practice and information about the authorities and subjects that work in the field of family mediation. Pupolizio takes an in-depth look at the practice of family mediation in Italy and draws up a summarised chronology of its development. Mediators do not investigate the couple's experience as a means for understanding the causes of the problem, but work together with the parties to identify concrete solutions for the future. Mediators have clearly already started venturing along the path that leads to their professionalisation. Training whose purpose is to accredit family mediators will in due course flank basic training for lawyers who are not familiar with these procedures. Pupolizio spends some time and energy looking into the legislative aspects of the mediator's professional practice. Today's legislation offers several spaces for mediation, primarily when spouses separate. The book's theoretical section discusses fears that the methods of alternative dispute resolution may lead to a privatisation of justice, dwelling in particular on the criticism expressed by the women's movement, which considers that mediation, as opposed to the legal system, puts women at a disadvantage towards men. Pupolizio believes that alternative methods do not constitute a danger for equity when they are understood correctly to be methods of appropriate dispute resolution. In this project, a gamified mediation strategy is proposed for the enhancement of the industrial heritage of Colonia Güell through the Street Escape tool. The general objectives are the conceptualization and design of a mediation strategy and its subsequent evaluation, as well as the analysis of the results obtained. In order to achieve these objectives, an investigation was developed that has as key points the gamification in heritage spaces and the Escape Room tourism. The qualitative methodology used has been a case study that has had the techniques of participant observation and focus group to collect information and behaviors from the ten participants in the game. The Street Escape has been done with two groups, one representing the teenage public and the other representing the youth public, since the tourist and didactic offer of Colonia Güell is insufficient to respond to the needs of young public. Afterwards, the conceptualization, design and evaluation of the Street Escape in Colonia Güell has been carried out. Finally, the results obtained show that the creation of a gamified mediation strategy helps to bring industrial heritage closer to young people.

Spatial dislocation of migrants is a catalyst for early, heavy and informed media use (Ponzanesi & Leurs 2014); as well as a motif for transnational families to form families of choice (Beck-Gernsheim 1998; Weston 1997). This text reports on how Irish-Spanish families living in Ireland manage this situation. It argues that (digital) photographic exchanges give rise to mediated third places (Oldenburg, 1989), where (dis)affect and belonging are negotiated. Transnational families visually mediate their domestic spaces regularly. The double visual mediation of presence and space forms part of their everyday. This, in turn, outlines current developments in how (digital) photography is used to mediate actions and emotions. In accounting for and reflecting about how (dis)affective communities of place activate affordances of media, photography emerges as a multi-dimensional site of image production, distribution and storage, in short, as a practice that is both unique to the socio-cultural moment in which it is embedded, and general enough to be recognized as such across cultures and societies. Keywords: diaspora, experience of place, new media, photography, visual mediation
