The purpose of this study was to determine the fourteen pre-service mathematics teachers&rsquo
beliefs about mathematics and teaching and learning of mathematics, and their expectations and acquisitions of the Five Year Integrated Program in the Department of Secondary Science and Mathematics Education at Gazi University, Turkey, and the development in their beliefs during the last three semesters of the program. The data were collected through four longitudinal interviews from each participant. Data collection process began at the beginning of the spring semester of the 2002&ndash
2003 academic year and ended at the end of spring semester of the 2003&ndash
2004 academic year. The interviews were tape-recorded and transcribed verbatim to produce a complete record of the interviewees&rsquo
conversation. The findings that were gathered from analyses of individual interviews show that pre-service teachers came to teacher education programs with some beliefs about mathematics, and teaching and learning of it. The interviews have provided evidence that pre-service teachers seemed to develop some new beliefs about mathematics during the first 3.5 years of program, and that the courses of the last 1.5 years of the program improved and consolidated pre-service teachers&rsquo
attitudes towards and beliefs about mathematics, and beliefs about the teaching and learning of mathematics. The research findings lead to the conclusion that OFD406, OFD408, OFD509 and OFD501 courses were perceived as the most effective courses and OFD402, OFD410 and OFD507 courses were considered as the least effective courses of the program.

Although an increasing number of research studies in mathematics education have begun focusing their efforts on mathematical modeling as a need for change to convey mathematical ideas beyond schools, there is not enough information about the nature of the teacher knowledge for effective use of modeling in mathematics teaching and how this knowledge evolves. The goal of this study is to investigate teachers&rsquo
evolving knowledge when they engage in professional development activities based on lesson study cycle from modeling perspective. Professional development program of this study included a cyclical process. Lasting a month, each cycle consisted of meeting before the implementation of the model eliciting activity, implementation of the activity and meeting after the implementation. The study took five months and was conducted in two public schools. The participants were four in-service mathematics teachers where two teachers were selected from each school by purposive sampling. The study was designed as case study. Data analyses were conducted during and after data collection and with two approaches as with-in case and cross-case analysis. As the professional development activities created learning environments for the teachers to develop their models for teaching mathematics from a modeling perspective, the results of this study showed that the professional development program used in the study had a positive effect on teachers&rsquo
evolving pedagogical content knowledge and pedagogical knowledge based on the theoretical and empirical backgrounds in the literature. Besides, implications, suggestions for professional development, for teachers and for further research are provided.

There exists a consensus about the importance, but little else, of the ongoing professional education of teachers. The professional development of teachers is often seen by teachers to be a purely private matter serving self-improvement and/or career advancement. Equally often it is assumed to be essentially collegial concerned with improved school responses to redefined social expectations. Little is known about how, at the intersection of personal interactions and social necessities, truth is constructed by teachers about the significance of professional development exercises. This ontological research investigated the influence of the community of practice in signifying professional development of teachers' professional identity formation. It is a proximal influence that has been largely neglected in the literature on professional development. The case studies conducted here of science teachers in a rural secondary school initially assumed that certain types of autonomy and collegiality, together with differing workplace conditions have a more positive influence on teachers' professional development than others. The use of teacher portfolios in professional development reporting was investigated as institutional scaffolding for facilitating the sharing of insights from often remote professional development experiences, and as a means of improving communication within the science department.Positioning theory, as a tool in discursive psychology, was used to analyse professional development experiences as narrated by four colleagues in conversations with the author.

This thesis investigates primary teachers' attitudes towards mathematics and mathematics teaching, and whether or not they are amenable to change. As used in the study, the term focuses on people, objects and issues, and brings together thought, action and emotion. The purpose of the research was threefold: • to investigate primary teachers' attitudes towards mathematics and towards mathematics teaching, and as a subsidiary aim to examine factors that might account for these attitudes; • to examine ways in which primary teachers' attitudes towards mathematics and mathematics teaching, along with other factors, influence their participation in a Logo-based mathematics in-service course; • to ascertain the degree to which primary teachers' attitudes towards mathematics and its teaching are influenced by their participation in a Logo-based mathematics in-service course. A two-country "zoom lens" design was adopted. It consisted of two qualitatively distinct but related sub-studies: (1) an attitude survey making use of a self-administered questionnaire; and (2) a developmental study of attitude change based on a Logo-based mathematical in-service course. These issues were investigated by adapting a vantage point which spans two educational cultures: England and Portugal. The attitude survey was administered in England in the Autumn term of the 1987/88 academic year and involved all the primary teachers of Suffolk County Council. In Portugal, it was administered in the Spring term of the sane academic year and involved all the primary teachers in the district of Viseu. The attitude questionnaire used in the survey included several Likentype scales aimed at mirroring different aspects of primary teachers' attitudes towards mathematics, as well as questions which sought to gather information about the teachers' background. The second sub-study was carried out in Portugal in the Summer term of the academic year 1987/88, and in England in the Autumn term of the following academic year. It involved ten Portuguese primary teachers and seven English primary teachers who volunteered to attend the Logo course. The methodology used in this sub-study combined ethnographic methods and concepts with principles akin to an action research paradigm. Considering the two sub-studies as a whole, the two most important conclusions were the following. First, the study indicated that the attitudes towards mathematics and mathematics teaching of the English primary teachers differed considerably from those of the Portuguese ones, along with their interactions with the Logo course, thus implying that cultural, social and even political factors are relevant to teachers' attitudes. Second, when the participation of the teachers in England and Portugal were compared (not in absolute, but in relative terms), there was a fair degree of similarity as to the conclusions reached in the two countries. The following conclusions were drawn: (a) Shifts in the teachers' attitudes towards mathematics and mathematics teaching were more likely to occur when they were already committed to change at the beginning of the course; (b) Shifts in the teachers' attitudes towards mathematics and mathematics teaching were closely related to the sense of personal achievement they derived from the course.

Recent documents have recommended a style of teaching for primary classrooms that favours a constructivist viewpoint of learning. The actuality of mathematics classrooms is different from this vision. Newly trained teachers while exposed to, and expounding, a constructivist philosophy are, in many cases, implementing a more traditional, teacher-centred approach to classroom practice. The purpose of this study was twofold: to investigate factors which influence the pedagogical practices and beliefs of beginning teachers of mathematics in primary classrooms and secondly to evaluate a professional development support model for beginning primary mathematics teachers. A model for professional development and support of beginning teachers of primary mathematics was designed from critical characteristics of effective teacher support obtained from the literature. The model was designed via the use of a 'fellow worker' to help beginning teachers implement constructivist ways of teaching mathematics in their classrooms. It was implemented over a period of the first year of teaching for the five participants. The research took the form of an interpretative, qualitative study. The main methods of data collection were interviews, observation, researcher and participant journals, case methods meetings, repertory grids, RADIATE categories, pre and post questionnaires and characterisation scales. Data were analysed using techniques of qualitative analysis recommended by Eisner (1991) and Miles and Huberman (1994). Analysis incorporated the use of the NUD*IST computer program. Findings suggest that the professional development, support model was successful in helping beginning teachers implement and sustain a more constructivist philosophy in mathematics teaching. It appeared to provide an effective framework lo meet the individual needs of teachers within specific contexts. It was an effective alternative to the isolation and 'sink-or-swim' attitude of the first year of teaching felt by the participants. Beginning teachers used reflection in their teaching and generally began to implement less teacher-directed, traditional methods of teaching after emerging from a foreshortened ‘survival’ period. The major influences acting on pedagogical practices were the children in the classrooms of the beginning teachers. Other factors such as limited pedagogical knowledge, traditional ways of behaving as a teacher, beliefs about mathematics, mathematics teaching and learning, and time also influenced classroom practice in primary mathematics. The major finding of the research is that, with personal and context-specific support, beginning teachers can start to implement pedagogical practices in primary mathematics consistent with recent recommendations. This thesis recommends that the support must come from both the general system and the school levels and must address the needs or the individual teachers rather than mass induction methods. Distinction and separation must be made between beginning teacher support and the assessment of the beginning teacher’s competence. General methods involving a ‘sink-or-swim’ philosophy and beginning teacher isolation should be abandoned. At the conclusion of this thesis, recommendations for further study and research are provided.

It is now generally acknowledged that effective and sustainable in-service education and training (INSET) programmes require, first, adequate information to be available on teachers' demographics and, second, for teachers' views on professional development to be taken into consideration. Neither kind of information is currently available for Mathematics teachers in the Limpopo Province of South Africa in a reliable manner. Consequently, this study has as its objectives 1) to determine the demographic profile of secondary Mathematics teachers in the Limpopo Province, 2) to establish the perceived INSET needs of these teachers, and 3) to examine possible associations between demographic profiles and perceived INSET needs of secondary Mathematics teachers in the Limpopo Province.

The competence of mathematics teachers and how to prepare competent future mathematics teachers have been hotly debated in recent years; pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) is a critical indictor of that competency (e.g., Ball & Bass, 2000; Ferrini-Mundy & Findell, 2010). This explorative study examines PCK and PCK change and the factors contributing to both among a group of secondary school mathematics student teachers in Hangzhou (the capital of and largest city in Zhejiang Province, China). Changes in PCK are investigated across the final two years of a pre-service secondary mathematics teacher education program. This program is traditional in nature, mainly consisting of mathematics teaching methods courses, teaching practica and advanced mathematics courses. Student teachers’ performance in three aspects of PCK — the substance of PCK, approaches to PCK and the structure of PCK — were assessed using a combination of quantitative and qualitative measures employed at two distinct stages of the program. At each stage, student teachers’ PCK was examined by a PCK questionnaire, a follow-up interview and three video-based interviews. The factors influencing PCK change were investigated using multiple phases and approaches of data collections. Specifically, rating schemes for each aspect of PCK were developed to evaluate student teachers’ responses and track the changes in their PCK. Interviews were conducted with student teachers at various stages of their professional growth to determine what they considered to be important factors affecting their PCK and changes to their PCK. In addition, observations of student teachers’ teaching practice during their teaching practica, together with interviews involving course instructors, mentor teachers and university teachers were employed to collect supplementary evidence on the impact of those factors. A quantitative analysis of the PCK questionnaire indicated that the participating student teachers generally did not perform well in PCK items in either stage. The follow-up interviews suggest that the different logic applied by the student teachers when responding to those items, their lack of sensitivity to contextual information, and their misunderstanding of terminology and incorrect assumptions all affected their performance. An additional qualitative analysis, based on three video-based interviews, indicated that student teachers’ overall performances in the three aspects of PCK improved in the second stage. Insights were gained into the major types of changes in PCK through paired responses. These changes were found to be influenced by changes in the student teachers’ knowledge of curriculum, of good examples/tasks/exercises, of clear lesson and teaching goals and of some affiliated affective factors. Other factors, including individual and social contextual factors, prior learning and tutoring experience, practicum experience and preparations for examinations and teaching competitions, are also examined for their direct or indirect impact on PCK. This study may contribute to current literature on the characteristics of Chinese student teachers’ PCK and PCK changes during the final two years of their pre-service teacher education. It provides a tentative explanation of how institutional and social contextual factors affect PCK and PCK change in different ways. Methodological and practical implications are also discussed.

The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of a mathematics teaching methods course on pre-service elementary mathematics teachers&rsquo
content knowledge for teaching mathematics (CKTM). In order to accomplish this purpose, pre-service mathematics teachers&rsquo
understanding of basic concepts and procedures in school mathematics, use of mathematical definitions, presentation of mathematical content to students, identification of common errors, misconceptions and solution strategies and evaluation of unusual solution methods were examined with the help of a multiple choice test. The data were collected from 43 senior pre-service mathematics teachers from a teacher education program at a large public university in Ankara. The participants were given an 83-item test to measure their content knowledge for mathematics teaching at the beginning and after the methods course. The purpose of the pre- and post-test assessment was to measure the amount of change in the participants'
knowledge for mathematics teaching. The test was developed and piloted at the University of Michigan in the USA for Learning Mathematics for Teaching (LMT) Project. Quantitative data analysis techniques were used to answer the research questions. The results indicated that there was a significant effect of the mathematics teaching methods course on pre-service teachers&rsquo
content knowledge for teaching mathematics. Moreover, the findings showed that there is no significant mean difference between male and female pre-service teachers, and between the pre-service teachers who have taken at least one mathematics teaching elective course and the ones who have not taken any elective course related to mathematics teaching in terms of their CKTM. Also, the study showed that there is a significant positive relationship between pre-service teachers&rsquo
CKTM and their academic achievement on undergraduate mathematics content courses. The study is expected to make important contributions to the literature by providing information about whether the methods courses significantly contribute to pre-service teachers&rsquo
understanding of knowledge for mathematics teaching. Moreover, the findings of the study is hoped to inform teacher educators and policy makers about the needs and improvements in teacher preparation programs.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a short-term math/science inservice based upon the participants' perceived changes in attitude and behavior relevant to the projects' goals and objectives. One hundred and three elementary school teachers from twelve schools in an urban school district participated in the inservice. The treatments were administered during two eight hour days, one month apart. The project was designed to improve the participants' attitude and behavior relevant to ten goals that centered around increasing awareness and use of science process and math problem solving approaches to teaching. The evaluation instrument was a pre- and post-treatment survey. Seventy questions were created and apportioned to test twenty hypotheses. Two hypotheses were tested to determine the achievement of each goal. One hypothesis tested the teachers' perceived change in attitude and the other tested the teachers' perceived change in teaching behavior relevant to a specific goal. Goal achievement was determined by comparing changes (significant at the.05 level) in attitude and behavior. All ten attitude hypotheses indicated a significant positive change occurred in attitude. None of the behavior hypotheses showed a significant positive change. It was determined that the inservice was totally effective in changing the teachers' attitude, relevant to the goals, but it failed to make a positive impact upon the teachers' perceptions of their actual practice in the classroom. It was speculated that the failure to affect behavior change was a result of one or a combination of the following four factors: insufficient time lapse to affect behavior, more accurate reporting on the post test, retrenchment resulting from feelings of inadequacy, and fear of venturing out alone primarily due to the lack of organizational development. Suggestions for improving the inservice were based upon proposed remedies for the above four factors.

In recent years, considerable concern has arisen over cross-national student’s math achievement. A number of studies focusing on eighth grade student’s math achievement have been published. However, the most important role we should consider is not only students, but also teachers. A good teaching training program could help teachers improve their teaching expertise and student’s math achievement. Moreover, most studies only focused on explained predictions of the effect between potential factors. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to implement a hierarchical linear model and cluster analysis techniques to re-examine the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) 2011 among eighth grade students in the United States (U.S.), South Korea, Singapore, and Taiwan. These techniques were applied to provide a teacher characteristics and student math achievement model and identify a new institutional typology based on the pattern of teacher characteristic types and countries. Based on these patterns and model, this study presented the findings, as well as suggestions for improving educational policies and teaching training program in, South Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, and the U.S.

Reforming pedagogy in mathematics education has been the focus of numerous educational reforms around the world. Productive Pedagogies is a framework for reflection on teaching that aims at improving students’ intellectual reasoning, making school teaching and learning more connected to students’ everyday lives, and addresses the concerns of equity support. There has been no research on this novel teaching framework in the Saudi Arabian context. The focus of this study was the incorporation of the Productive Pedagogies framework in teacher education. In particular, this study aimed to investigate the incorporation of the Productive Pedagogies framework within a teachers’ pre-service unit in mathematics education in Saudi Arabia. In addition, it aimed to investigate the pre-service teachers’ ability to implement the framework in their field experiences. Socio-cultural factors related to the incorporation of Productive Pedagogies in a Saudi Arabian context were also examined. This research is a qualitative study informed by practical action research methodology and aims to introduce the Productive Pedagogies framework to a group of final year pre-service teachers at a teacher education college in Saudi Arabia. This study took place during the last two semesters of the course and was conceptualised to consist of two phases. In phase I, eighteen pre-service teachers were introduced to the Productive Pedagogies framework in the unit of Mathematics Teaching Methods. In other words, the framework constituted part of the content of the unit and was used as an overall organizer to integrate the other content usually covered in the subject. At the same time, the framework was used by the researcher in his teaching of the subject, thus modeling the principles of the framework in the classroom. In phase II, six pre-service teachers were followed into their field experience at two participating primary schools. Each pre-service teacher was observed five times during their field experience to ascertain his level of understanding and use of the framework. This study gathered data from focus groups, interviews, observations and reflective journals. The study revealed that, overwhelmingly, pre-service teachers found the framework very useful, helping them to integrate their new knowledge developed in the unit, Mathematics Teaching Methods, into their practice; they also attempted to use it in planning, conducting and reflecting on their teaching practice during their field experience. In particular, the pre-service teachers demonstrated a shift towards student-centred teaching. In addition, the findings indicated that while the pre-service teachers faced challenges in using Productive Pedagogies in their practice and some of the main dimensions were not implemented a great deal, there was clear evidence of an increase in the implementation of each dimension by pre-service teachers over the duration of the observation period. Reflecting on some of the problems that were observed, this study makes some recommendations for teacher training programs in general.

It's almost like a dinner party and a buffet. A dinner party you get dished up stuff and you eat it and a buffet you can choose what you want out of a range of stuff. I mean think about it when you go to a dinner party- they always dish up something you don't like and you don't want to eat it anyway. It's the same if you have a lecturer in the front that just dishes out what you're going to learn, ... you have to learn it. But in terms of the curriculum negotiation process, I've got to choose what I wanted to leam. (Melissa II 27/11/01: 3) This thesis focuses on the process of negotiating the curriculum with twelve pre-service teachers registered for the Bachelor of Education (Primary) Degree during their Mathematics Education Course in their third year of study. The research is presented methodologically as an action research located within two paradigmatic positions, interpretive and critical. The research attempted to understand, interpret and critique the process of curriculum negotiation within the context of teacher education in South Africa In order to understand the negotiated curriculum process, experiences of the participants are presented through the use of their voices within the thesis. The interpretation is based on the construction and reconstruction of meaning during the enactment of the negotiated curriculum process and during the writing and reviewing of this thesis. The critique is rooted in the historical, cultural and social contexts of both the students and the author. The main contention of this thesis is that curriculum negotiation is not necessarily a suitable vehicle for developing a critical pedagogy in pre-service teacher education when all the participants form a homogenous group in this case, white middle-class women. The democratic values promoted within the context of our curriculum negotiation were fraught with dilemmas and entrenched the values of western liberalism. At most, the curriculum negotiation process and the development of a democratic learning environment, promoted a conscientisation at an individual level, namely a ' transformation of consciousness' . The democratic values promoted in our pedagogy were not sufficient in bringing about social change, a 'transformation for social action'.

This research study investigated the ways in which a mathematics module, informed by an enactivist philosophy, enabled pre-service teachers to unpack the reality of their teaching practice in terms of proficient teaching. Given the generally poor mathematics results in South Africa it is not enough for teachers to be merely proficient in Mathematics. They also need to be in a position to explain important mathematical concepts to children in a manner that will encourage and develop an understanding of the basic mathematical concepts. It was my intention with this study to determine whether a mathematics education module, that embraced the underlying themes of enactivism as part of its teaching pedagogy, could have the potential to develop and increase the skills of pre-service teachers’ teaching for proficiency in Mathematics. The mathematics module was underpinned by five themes of enactivism namely: autonomy, embodiment, emergence, sense-making and experience and was designed to supplement the pre-service teachers’ basic skills in Mathematics in the Intermediate Phase. This mathematics module was offered to fourth year pre-service teachers completing a B.Ed. in the Foundation Phase at a private institute specialising in the training of teachers. The theoretical framework was informed by enactivism and how the themes of enactivism could be used as a vehicle to develop teaching proficiency. The study was qualitative in nature and situated within an interpretivist paradigm. The specific perspectives of interpretivism that were used were hermeneutics, phenomenology and reflexivity. The research design was a case study that contained elements of action research and encompassed three phases of data collection. The first phase focused on the pre-service teachers’ approach to teaching Mathematics and what this brought forth in terms of the reality of their teaching practice and the problems they encountered. The second phase undertook to determine what growth and development of teaching proficiency in Mathematics had emerged over the research period. The final phase was undertaken after the pre-service teachers had graduated and were employed as full time teachers in the Intermediate Phase. The analytical framework and lens through which the data was analysed was that of Kilpatrick, Swafford and Findell’s (2001) strands of mathematical proficiency. The argument that I present is that the themes of enactivism did contribute to the growth of the pre-service teachers’ teaching for mathematical proficiency. The themes of embodiment and experience were major contributions in revealing that this was a reality for the pre-service teachers from a practical perspective and was what they would be able to take away with them. However the theme of emergence stood out as the principle that generated the most awareness and growth and which, in turn, affected the participants’ autonomy.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Mathematics teacher development is a source of national and international concern. This study describes how primary school mathematics teachers develop didactisation practices. In considering how teachers could develop, so that student learning is optimised; the concepts of didactisation and the mathematical work of teaching were sourced from existing literature. The concept didactisation is explored and defined; and is incorporated with the concept of mathematical work of teaching. Nine practices were made explicit through this incorporation: active students, differentiation, mathematisation, vertically aligned lessons, access, probe, connect and assess student thinking, and teacher reflection. These nine practices become the framework for the professional development program and the data generation structure. Five primary school teachers were involved in a professional development program that used model-eliciting activities (MEAs) as a point of departure. A modelling perspective to teacher learning was chosen for the professional development program. The methodology followed the principles of design research and from this, a three phase teaching experiment was designed and implemented. The teachers and researcher met for development sessions and teachers were observed in practice at intervals throughout the program. Their developing didactisation practices were documented through a qualitative analysis of the data. It was established that teachers’ didactisation practices did develop during the nine-month program. Furthermore it was found that didactisation practices developed at different rates and consequently, a hierarchy of didactisation practice development is presented. The impact of the program was also gauged through teachers’ changing resources, goals and orientations. These three aspects also evolved over time. The program proposed in this study may be a suitable model to develop in-service and pre-service mathematics teachers. The study contributes to understanding teacher action in a classroom and how teachers can change their own thinking and practice.

Vyf laerskool onderwysers was betrokke in ‘n professionele ontwikkelingsprogram waarin model-ontlokkende aktiwiteite (MOA’s) as ‘n vertrekpunt gebruik is.

In the past twenty years there has been increased interest in the ways in which teachers construct their professional lives. It is no longer assumed that preservice education alone will enable teachers to meet the challenges of their teaching lives. Ongoing professional development is seen as an essential component of contemporary teachers' lives but remains a challenge for professional development planners and providers. The nature and extent of teachers' participation in professional development was a significant dimension of the investigation of professional development contained in this thesis. The research questions which formed the basis for the data collection in this thesis related to a specific group of teachers, early childhood teachers, and to a particular curriculum area, mathematics. The research goals were to obtain descriptive data related to teachers' professional development experiences and to explore the relationships between the realities of practice and the rhetoric of the literature on professional development, early childhood education and mathematics education. The data were obtained in the Northern Territory and came principally from questionnaire responses and interviews. The results of this study highlight the complexities of teaching in the 1990s and indicate that early childhood teachers are faced with a number of professional dilemmas, the resolution of which indicates the need for a range of professional development interventions. The recommendations contained in the latter part of the thesis make reference to the need for the provision of a wider range of professional development options and for a greater emphasis to be placed on collegial support. The results of this study suggest that change can occur if teachers are encouraged and supported in their endeavours to improve their practice.

The aim of this study was to investigate the changes on what the prospective elementary mathematics teachers noticed as they watched video cases and discussed online. More specially, I wanted to answer the question &ldquo
To what extent the elementary prospective mathematics teachers&rsquo
noticing with respect to reform-minded teaching changes during their video case-based teacher education, in terms of teacher and student roles?&rdquo
With this question in mind, I asked senior prospective mathematics teachers at METU to watch six video cases depicting real elementary mathematics classrooms, and then discuss these cases in an online forum. The research was conducted during the 2008-2009 fall semester. Participants were asked to write reflection papers after watching a video each week. The online discussions took place in Metu Online-Net ClassR online forum, and each discussion was about a long week. The research study was qualitative in nature. Specifically, it was a case study research. Prospective teachers&rsquo
reflection papers on the videos, the online discussions, and interviews with the selected 15 focus participants at the beginning, in the middle and at the end of the study were the data sources. The data were analyzed through the qualitative data analysis techniques. The findings suggested that prospective teachers&rsquo
noticing skills with respect to the teacher and student roles in reform-minded teaching and learning were developed throughout the online video-case based discussions.

The purpose of this paper is to report a research linked to the Observatory of Education Program and to the Group of Studies and Research on Educational Practices in Mathematics (GEPRAEM). It was developed in the Graduate Program in Education of the Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCar) - Sorocaba campus. The question that guided the study was: Which perceptions about formation and mathematical knowledge seem to support the research that discusses the mathematical formation of the polyvalent teacher? In view of these questions, the objectives of this research are: to make it possible to understand that when discussing the mathematical training offered in the courses of Pedagogy, the formation of a professional working in the context of polyvalence is being problematized; Identify definitions of mathematical knowledge; To characterize the movement of appropriation of repertoires and knowledge related to the mathematical knowledge of the teaching professional that works in the context of polyvalence and offer subsidies to (re) think the models of their formation. The research is structured from the perspective of qualitative analysis and methodology integrates the mapping of the productions within a temporal cut and the perspective of the metaanalysis. The data collection was based on the mapping and analysis of the research published in the National Meeting of Mathematics Education (ENEM) and the International Symposium on Mathematical Education (SIPEM) that deal with the mathematical education of the pedagogue. For the analysis, theoretical methodological references on teacher education were used, especially on the mathematical formation of the polyvalent teacher, among them are the studies of CURI (2004); CURI & PIRES (2013); D'AMBRÓSIO (1993); PONTE (2008); RIBEIRO (2016). The results indicate: a great variety of points of view in the mathematical formation of the polyvalent teacher; Tendency to favor methodological aspects of Mathematics; Concern with the modification of teachers' beliefs and conceptions about Mathematics, their teachinglearning and the need to think about the context of polyvalence as the main source of action of the polyvalent teacher. Considering the indissociability with other disciplines and the development of autonomy in the child as a condition of the work of the polyvalent teacher implies principles that reinforce the relevance of the relationship between the subjects in the teaching-learning process. It implies recognizing the existence of a professional who is responsible for the development of the child as a whole. It is, therefore, a subject that allows senses to the teaching-learning process, to meet the needs of the child, that is, to serve as a reference and mediator of these actions.

The primary purpose of this study was to compare three instructional delivery systems for providing basic math skills training to non-degree industrial and technical teachers. Also examined was the extent to which selected teacher background characteristics were associated with test performance. Additionally, the three treatment groups were compared on the basis of student ratings of selected items on the course evaluation instrument. Eighty-four non-degree industrial and technical teachers teaching in West Virginia were given a pretest on basic math skills. This pretest was followed by a seven-week period of basic math review and remediation using one of three instructional delivery systems. The three instructional delivery systems included Computer Assisted Instruction (CAI), Individualized Learning Modules (ILM), and the traditional lecture (LEC). A posttest was administered to participants at the end of the review and remediation period. An analysis of covariance was used to compare the mean posttest scores for each of the three treatment groups. The pretest score served as the covariate. Results of the study indicated that although there were substantial gains in basic math scores within each treatment group there was no significant difference in mean posttest scores when comparing the three treatment groups. Computing the Pearson Product-Moment correlation in assessing the relationship between selected teacher background characteristics and posttest scores, it was found that the variables pretest and age were significantly related. Pretest scores had a high positive correlation to posttest scores while age had a moderate negative correlation. A one-way analysis of variance was used to compare the ratings of selected items on the course evaluation instrument. No significant difference in ratings between treatment groups was found for any of the items compared.

This research study investigates how selected Grade R teachers implement numeracy in their classrooms, based on their experiences, personal beliefs and perceptions. This study adopts the view that a teacher's practice is not only informed on what she believes about her learners, but also on how she organises her classroom environment and her own teaching practice. However, the teacher cannot be divorced from the political and historical background of Early Childhood Development (ECD), as these factors have an impact on her numeracy implementation. Integrated in this research study is thus not only a comprehensive historical analysis of the historical and political background of ECD, but also an in-depth look at the complex curriculum road the Grade R teacher had to travel over the past twelve years. The aim of this case study is to understand and describe what is happening in Grade R classrooms when numeracy is implemented, as well as identifying possible barriers which Grade R teachers may experience in implementing numeracy. The author utilized an adapted Interactive Qualitative Analysis Framework to explore Grade R teachers' views and experiences. Open-ended focus group interviews were used to develop a framework for individual interviews. This interview framework guided the data collection of nine audio-video tapes of classroom activities and nine semi-structured individual interviews. Analysis of the individual interviews revealed each teacher's understanding as well as her perceptions and needs regarding the implementation of numeracy in her classroom. The transcriptions of the individual interviews were compared to the audio-video tapes of what happened in each classroom. This was done in order to determine whether the teachers' practices were consistent with what they said in the interviews. Paradoxes and inconsistencies were documented. The historical and political analysis of ECD illustrates the complex development of ECD in South Africa over the last few decades. It therefore also highlights and brings to the fore the complex journey that Grade R teachers had to navigate in adapting their practice to ever changing curriculum requirements. The empirical results show that there are inconsistencies between what selected teachers know and believe, and what they are implementing. However, "silent themes" which did not come to the fore in the focus group or individual interviews, were identified in the audiovideo tapes of classroom activities. Also, many "silent themes" indicate that there are numerous concerns, such as lack of proficiency in bridging the gap between theory and practice, regarding the implementation of numeracy in Grade R. It was found that many of the selected Grade R teachers struggle to implement numeracy in their classrooms, as they lack the skills and support to teach numeracy in a Grade R context.

This study focuses on the processes of primary maths teacher learning and how their identities and practices evolve in relation to participation in a primary maths focused in-service teacher education programme, called the Numeracy Inquiry Community of Leader Educators (NICLE).Additionally it investigates activities, relations and forms of participation within the Community of Practice (CoP) which enable or constrain evolving primary maths identities and practices and how these relate to the broader context. The study draws from the situative-participationists (Lave, 1996; Wenger, 1998; Sfard & Prusak, 2005; Wenger et al, 2002) theoretical framework supplemented by Bernstein’s (2000) pedagogic identity model. Using a qualitative educational interpretive approach I sampled 8 primary teachers drawn from NICLE and gathered data through participant observations, interactive interviews, document analysis and reflective journals. Analysing the key data themes that emerged from teacher learning stories, which I have called stelos, the study explains the nature of the primary maths teachers’ learning, transformation and participation experiences in NICLE using the synonyms reinvigoration and remediation and activation and relating these semantics to the teachers’ mathematical identities and histories. The study also explains the processes through which primary maths teacher identities evolve in relation to participation in an in-service CoP as ‘insiding’ and ‘outcropping’. Interpreting qualitative data from the empirical field indicates that teachers participating in NICLE mostly took-up into their maths classrooms key numeracy-domain concepts, resources and issues presented by primary maths experts which are informed by research and theory that link to practices. Teachers collaboratively and actively engaged in a range of activities that relate to classroom practices. Teacher learning was also enabled when teachers engaged in maths overlapping communities of practice, shared classroom experiences in friendly ways with fellow NICLE teachers and engaged with NICLE presenters who mutually respected and regarded them as professionals. Such affordances were said to enable teachers to engage learners in maths classes and improve their understanding of specific primary maths concepts. On the other hand teachers felt challenged by the travelling distance, limited time and also raised the tension of how to scale-up maths professional development initiatives to include schools from their community. The study makes a theoretical contribution by illustrating how Bernstein’s pedagogic identity model and its elaboration by Tyler (1999) provides analytical tools to interrogate macro educational changes and connect these to the micro processes and teacher identities.

This dissertation examines elementary teacher candidates' perceptions of hip-hop culture and utilizing hip-hop pedagogy in a mathematics classroom. This study demonstrates how elements of hip-hop may be integrated into an elementary mathematics methods course to develop pedagogical knowledge that challenges teacher candidates to explore the benefits of utilizing hip-hop as a tool in the classroom. This study contributes to the growing body of research that investigates the use of hip-hop pedagogy in educator preparatory programs. Participants in this study were teacher candidates at a large university in Texas enrolled in the final year of their educator preparatory program. This research shows that as a result of integrating hip-hop pedagogy in the mathematics methods course, teacher candidates had increased knowledge and more positive perceptions of hip-hop culture, and they demonstrated a greater willingness to integrate hip-hop pedagogy in their future classrooms.

Children from many culturally diverse backgrounds do not achieve in mathematics at the same rates as their counterparts from the dominant White, European-American culture (Gay, 2010). This so-called achievement gap is an artifact of an educational system that continues to fail to provide equal learning opportunities to culturally diverse children (Ladson-Billings, 2006; Nieto & Bode, 2011). Teachers who employ culturally responsive teaching (Gay, 2010) may help to close this opportunity gap and hence, the achievement gap. This study investigated, "How do elementary teacher candidates perceive teaching mathematics in a multicultural environment"; Using a critical constructivism research paradigm, this qualitative instrumental multiple case study involved a questionnaire, two interviews and a focus group with four elementary teacher candidates enrolled in a one-year teaching licensure program. The study examined elementary teacher candidates' images of mathematics and diverse students and the relationship between those images and their perceptions of teaching mathematics in a multicultural environment. The study concluded that the participants', images of mathematics, learners, and the teaching of mathematics were interrelated. The participants struggled to understand how students' diversity based on group membership (e.g., culture) influences a mathematics classroom and their teaching. However, on the basis of these participants, teacher candidates who hold a conceptual image of mathematics could be more open to adopting culturally responsive teaching than teacher candidates who hold a procedural image of mathematics. The study recommends the integration and modeling of culturally responsive teaching throughout all teacher education coursework.

With the recent adoption of the Next Generation Science Standards in Oregon, there is a great need for teachers to be trained to effectively implement the three dimensions of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) in their teaching. Time and location are the largest constraining factors that affect teacher participation in professional development trainings. To address this constraint, Tryon Creek State Park offered a NGSS professional development training opportunity for teachers that was integrated within a field trip that they took their students on. Before the field trip, teachers were introduced to the NGSS through a set of NGSS pre-field trip materials which informed them about the NGSS and how aspects of it would be integrated into their students’ field trip. Teachers accompanied their students on a two-hour long field trip at Tryon Creek State Park where teachers observed nature guides model NGSS-aligned activities for the students. My research aimed to answer the following question: How will an informal science education program at Tryon Creek State Park affect K-2 teachers’ awareness of the Next Generation Science Standards? Outcomes were measured through a pre/post retrospective survey and follow-up interviews. On the survey teachers reported little awareness of the three dimensions of the NGSS and very few of the teachers increased their understanding after the treatment. On the other hand, most had a high level of awareness and confidence in teaching factual information supporting the NGSS prior to treatment, resulting in a ceiling effect. Interviews suggested that few teachers read the materials sent in advance of the field trip, but teachers who did read the materials indicated increases in understanding of the NGSS. During the field trip several of the nature guides were effective in modeling science and engineering practices. These findings suggest that this method of professional development is promising, but needs further refinement.

In the last twenty years in US science education, professional development has emphasized the need to change science instruction from a direct instruction model to a more participatory and constructivist learning model. The result of these reform efforts has seen an increase in science education professional development that is focused on providing teaching strategies that promote inquiry learning to learn science content. Given these reform efforts and teacher responses to professional development, research seems to indicate that whether teachers actually change their practice may depend on the teachers' basic epistemological beliefs about the nature of science. The person who builds the bridge between teacher beliefs and teacher practice is the designer and facilitator of science teacher professional development. Even though these designers and facilitators of professional development are critical to science teacher change, few have studied how these professionals approach their work and what influence their beliefs have on their professional development activities. Eight developers and designers of science education professional development participated in this study through interviews and the completion of an online questionnaire. To examine the relationship between professional development providers' science beliefs and their design, development, and implementation of professional development experiences for science teachers, this study used the Views on Science Education Questionnaire (VOSE), and interview transcripts as well as analysis of the documents from teacher professional development experiences. Through a basic interpretive qualitative analysis, the predominant themes that emerged from this study suggest that the nature of science is often equated with the practice of science, personal beliefs about the nature of science have a minimal impact on the design of professional development experiences, current reform efforts in science education have a strong influence on the design of professional development, and those providing science education professional development have diverse views about epistemology and the nature of science. The results and conclusions from this study lead to a discussion of implications and recommendations for the planning and design of professional development for science teachers, including the need to making equity and social justice issues an integral part of inquiry and scientific practice.

The state of Oregon has adopted the Next Generation Science Standards as well as the English Language Proficiency standards, both of which affect elementary school teachers. These standards adoptions challenge teachers and professional developers to rethink how they approach science conceptual understanding and language acquisition. The Math Science Partnership K-6 Instructional Specialist Grant made the decision to incorporate a Task Analysis process, which asks the participant to analyze the demands of a content-based task in the domains of content knowledge, analytical skills and language, into six eight-week summer courses focused on the Next Generation Science Standards. A pre and post-assessment was created to determine if any growth in teacher understanding of the demands of a science task could be observed as a result of engaging in the Task Analysis process. A four point rubric was created to score participant responses. Two research questions were developed: 1. How well does the ELPA21 Task Analysis tool help participants understand the language demands of a science task when used as part of an NGSS summer professional development course? 2. How effective is a work sample and scoring rubric protocol for measuring the impact of the Task Analysis process? Participants showed statistically significant growth in their analysis of a science task from pre to post-assessment responses, with particularly strong growth demonstrated in the domains of content and language. Further coding of responses revealed that participants frequently discussed vocabulary as both a language and content knowledge demand of a science task.

This study, of qualitative nature, are based on participatory research, specifically action research, in view of the proposal for an intervention in the group studied. For the analysis of data produced by the teachers, the content analysis by the very nature of such data was used, the main landmarks references Bardin (1977) and Franco (2005) and for reasons of narrative, which constitute the data from this survey, we rely on Cunha (1997), Souza (2006) and Galvão (2005). The issue of teaching knowledge which is another aspect discussed in this work is grounded by the studies of Tardif (2011), Gauthier (1998) and other researchers dealing with the subject. The perspective is adopted in this research is an investigative work and that does not close at the time of analysis, and opening to the continuity of the reflections that now will be brought here. The object of study is seated in the triad: teaching knowledge, curriculum and teaching of geometry, with the theoretical foundation Silva (2010) in the curriculum conceptions, Leme da Silva and Valente (2014), Lorenzato (2011) and Fainguelernt (1999) in thinking about the geometry of education as well as the theoretical development of Piaget and Inhelder (1993) and Van Hiele (1990). Presented with this dissertation contributions to the continued discussion of teaching knowledge in the educational context, valuing the voice of the teacher of Primary Education Years Initials. As conclusions, we have the teaching knowledge arising announced by the teachers of vocational training, as well as disciplinary, curricular and experiential knowledge in the analyzed narratives. We bring to this indicative study for teacher continuing education concerning the reflective professional attitude and also to learn experiential as knowledge important to be considered in academic research as well as in their own continuing education of teachers.

This study was motivated by the need to develop professional learning for primary school teachers that would support them to more effectively teach the mathematics topic of fractions. What seemed evident, was that previous professional learning attended by teachers had not adequately met their needs. The aim of this study was to investigate whether professional learning, with a focus on subject content knowledge, pedagogical knowledge and reflective practice could enhance primary school teachers’ PCK for teaching fractions and make them more confident teachers of fractions. Demonstrating this to be the case would have wide implications for the development of professional learning opportunities for in-service teachers and would also be highly beneficial in informing teacher education. This study brought together teachers from a variety of backgrounds and experiences. These experiences comprised not only what they had encountered in their teaching of mathematics, but also what they had encountered in their learning of mathematics. Therefore a study of the affective elements of attitudes, beliefs and self-efficacy were not only warranted, but pivotal. The professional learning was conducted over an extended period of time and the teachers were involved in workshops where clear links were explored between the required content and what the current research considered to be the most efficacious pedagogy. They were then required to take at least one of the activities from the workshops and use it in their classroom. After they had taught the lesson, they were asked to reflect upon the lesson and bring those reflections to the next session to share with the group. This cycle was repeated. This research showed that the professional learning amplified both Pedagogical Knowledge (PK) and Subject Matter Knowledge (SMK), which in turn provided pathways to increased PCK. The results also indicated that well-structured professional learning can have a positive effect on the beliefs and attitudes of teachers towards teaching the difficult mathematical topic of fractions. This improvement in attitudes and beliefs is important, as the impact of efficacy on the teaching and learning of mathematics cannot be underestimated.

This study investigates how primary school mathematics in-service teachers respond to learners’ offers, over time, during classroom interactions. The study was a follow-up to a one-year long in-service ‘maths for teaching’ professional development course in which 33 teachers participated in 2012. Four teachers from that course were tracked in this follow-up study. Data sources within this study consisted of two cycles of observations of lessons taught by the four teachers in 2013 and 2014, and an interim video-stimulated recall (VSR) interview with each teacher, with reflections guided by the structure of Rowland et al.’s ‘knowledge quartet’. A total of 18 lessons from the four teachers were video-recorded across the 2013 and 2014 observations. The notion of ‘elaboration’ was used in this study as an interpretive lens to examine and characterise responsive teaching actions in the South African context, with the focus narrowing over the course of the PhD to contingency situations within the knowledge quartet framework, focused on responses to learner offers. In the South African literature, the terrain of elaboration is characterised by extensive gaps in teachers’ mathematical knowledge, incoherent talk, and frequent lack of evaluation of learners’ offers in the classroom. Using a grounded theory approach, I propose an ‘elaboration’ framework with three situations of responsive teaching (breakdown, sophistication and individuation/ collectivisation), which can be used as a tool to support the development of more responsive teaching in the South African context (and perhaps in other contexts where similar problems prevail). In this way, the study has contributed in terms of identifying some important ‘stages of implementation’ (Schweisfurth, 2011) that might be required to move towards the ideals of more responsive teaching that are described in the international literature, and yet remain distant from the realities of South African schooling. Using the three markers of shifts (extent, breadth and quality) in elaboration recruited in this study, drawn from the ways in which the dimensions of responsive teaching were conceptualised, I report on the different patterns of shifts in elaboration by the four teachers. The results of this analysis indicated that all four teachers made shifts in their responses to learners’ offers from 2013 to 2014 lessons in at least one or more dimensions of responsive teaching, in relation to extent, breadth and quality of elaborations. Findings from VSR interviews indicated associations between shifts in teachers’ reflective awareness, and shifts in responsive teaching actions. Theoretically, the study contributes through characterising responsive teaching actions in contexts of evidence of limited evaluation within the elaboration framework, with a language of description for identifying and developing more responsive teaching actions in a resource constrained context

This investigation is primarily concerned with the In-Service Education and Training (INSET) needs of primary school mathematics educators. The research is grounded in the proposition that in order for senior primary mathematics educators to keep abreast with the current knowledge explosion and rapid rate of technological growth, they are under serious obligation to improve their expertise, knowledge and skills in mathematics teaching and learning through INSET. Pre-Service Education and Training (PRESET) serves only as preparation for entry into the teaching profession and cannot last the whole teaching career. INSET is thus necessary for the senior primary mathematics educator’s continuing education. In this investigation an attempt is made at establishing a framework for INSET and mathematics educators. It is hoped that these theoretical frameworks will enable mathematics educators to cope with the changing needs of senior primary mathematics education. There is no doubt that the developments of senior primary mathematics education and INSET in the United Kingdom can have a profound effect on the senior primary mathematics education in South Africa. The extent to which the developments in the United Kingdom influences the educational initiatives presently being undertaken in South Africa will depend upon those who teach senior primary mathematics and those who are responsible for the provision of INSET of senior primary mathematics educators. The past South African discriminatory policies led to numerous iniquities in the provision of mathematics materials and development of mathematical human resources. Consequently, there is a large number of unqualified and under-qualified mathematics educators especially amongst Blacks in South Africa. It is through INSET that this condition can be rectified. A questionnaire survey revealed that senior primary mathematics educators are fully conscious of the importance and significance of INSET. The recommendations made for the INSET of primary school mathematics educators based on the literature survey and the empirical investigation are: the need to establish a national and provincial policy for the INSET of primary school mathematics educators; there must be a concerted effort to establish school focused INSET; many of the methods of INSET courses emphasizing the participative approach needs to be explored; the value of teachers’ centres as exciting brokers for new ideas and as networks for personnel proves invaluable and finally, pivotal to the INSET of primary school mathematics educators is the need for them to update their in-depth knowledge of mathematics. There is no doubt that the INSET of primary school mathematics educators is a crucial factor in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN). It is clear from this research that INSET for both academic and professional upgrading of the senior primary mathematics educators and the improvement of mathematics teaching and learning I the primary school is only limited by one’s imagination.

Technology has long been viewed an important tool in education and instructional software offers unique affordances that when designed well can help improve teaching and learning. However, for software to effectively impact education, teachers must be prepared to effectively incorporate it into the classroom. This is a task that involves many factors, three of which explored in this study include the abilities to integrate, find, and evaluate quality of educational software. With the increasing support for the use of educational software with young children, it is imperative to understand the unique challenges early childhood teachers face and how teacher education programs are preparing them to meet the demands of an evolving 21st century education system. Contrary to their colleagues who teach older students, extensive research on this population and topic is largely absent. Given that little research has been done to evaluate how prepared pre-service teachers are to enter the early childhood classroom and integrate educational software, the main goals of this study were to offer preliminary insight on their experiences using and preparing to use educational software with young children; how they approach evaluating quality of educational software; and beliefs on how well their teacher education programs have prepared them. Results from this study have important implications for the design of teacher education programs and in-service professional development on the integration of educational software at the early childhood grade levels. This paper provides initial evidence that pre-service early childhood teachers may be under-prepared to enter the classroom ready to effectively integrate educational software and demonstrates a clear need for more research on how teacher education programs prepare their students to integrate, find, and evaluate quality of educational software in the classroom setting. Furthermore, results also offer school administrators insight on how prepared first year teachers are meet classroom expectations. For educational technology to significantly impact teaching and learning, targeted in-service professional development opportunities and enhanced teacher education may be necessary, even for the generations of teachers who grew up during the technological explosion.

Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of the Witwatersrand, Faculty of Humanities, School of Education, 2013
Mathematics-for-teaching (MfT) is complex, multi-faceted and topic-specific. In this study, a Financial Mathematics course for pre-service secondary mathematics teachers provides a revelatory case for investigating MfT. The course was designed and taught by the author to a class of forty-two students at a university in South Africa. Eight students, forming a purposive sample, participated as members of two focus tutorial groups and took part in individual and group interviews. As an instance of insider research, the study makes use of a qualitative methodology that draws on a variety of data sources including lecture sessions and group tutorials, group and individual interviews, students’ journals, a test and a questionnaire. The thesis is structured in two parts. The first part explores revisiting of school mathematics with particular focus on compound interest and the related aspects of percentage change and exponential growth. Four cases are presented, in the form of analytic narrative vignettes which structure the analysis and provide insight into opportunities for learning MfT of compound interest. The evidence shows that opportunities may be provided to learn a range of aspects of MfT through revisiting school mathematics. The second part focuses on obstacles experienced by students in learning annuities, their time-related talk, as well as their use of mathematical resources such as timelines and spreadsheets. A range of obstacles are identified. Evidence shows that students use timelines in a range of non-standard ways but that this does not necessarily determine or reflect their success in solving annuities problems. Students’ use of spreadsheets reveals that spreadsheets are a powerful tool for working with annuities. A key finding with regard to teachers’ mathematical knowledge, and which cuts across both parts of the thesis, is the importance of being able to move between compressed and decompressed forms of mathematics. The study makes three key contributions. Firstly, a framework for MfT is proposed, building on existing frameworks in the literature. This framework is used as a conceptual tool to frame the study, and as an analytic tool to explore opportunities to learn MfT as well as the obstacles experienced by. A second contribution is the theoretical and empirical elaboration of the notion of revisiting. Thirdly, a range of theoretical constructs related to teaching and learning introductory financial mathematics are introduced. These include separate reference landscapes for the concepts of compound interest and annuities

Lesson study has been introduced in the United States as a collaborative professional development process focusing on improving teachers’ content knowledge and instructional skills as teachers plan a research lesson, teach and observe students’ thinking and learning behaviors and then revise and re-teach the lesson. The origin of lesson study in the United States began shortly after, The Teaching Gap by James Stigler and James Hiebert was published in 1999. The researchers attributed Japanese students’ high achievement scores in mathematics and science to their teachers’ participation in the lessons study process. Lesson study professional development formally began with a grant from the U.S. Department of Education in 1999; however, research on effective professional development programs and practices have been studied and reported for decades. Results from these studies and findings on teacher and adult learning were examined and reported in this study. This case study examined the learning experiences of six elementary and middle school teachers as they participated in the lesson study process. The teachers first began with sessions on discussing lesson study research, the lesson study process and viewing other teachers participating in lesson study. The teachers later collaborated to create, teach, observe, revise and re-teach a 5th grade mathematics research lesson on elapsed time during summer school. The qualitative research incorporated teacher interviews, observations, written reflections and artifacts such as agendas, planning documents and lesson plans. The data collected helped provide insight in examining the three research questions: a) How do teachers understand lesson study as a professional development process?; b) How will engaging in the lesson study affect the teachers’ planning and practices?; and c) What are some challenges in learning and applying key lesson study concepts? The case study data affirmed existing research on quality professional development, effective teacher/adult learning and accurate lesson study practices and supported the emerging themes of the teachers’ valuing collaboration, teachers’ valuing the deepening of their mathematics understanding and enhancing of their instructional practices, and finally, the teachers’ valuing the incorporation of student thinking in their planning, teaching and re-teaching experiences.

The study investigated the nature and quality of in-service education and training programmes organized for Further Education and Training (FET) mathematics teachers in the Greater Taung Area. The researcher is of the contention that more could be done to improve the process and the effectiveness of in-service training in the area. An extensive literature study provides a theoretical foundation and exposes some critical issues for effective in-service training programmes. The qualitative approach is used in the case study. The data were analysed through inductive analysis. The major research findings are that there are no formal processes of identifying the needs of mathematics teachers and further, teachers are not monitored and supervised after in-service sessions. It is recommended that the needs of teachers be identified by the school before inset. For effective monitoring and supervision of mathematics teachers after inset, it is recommended that each cluster within the Area Project Office (APO) should have a subject specialist for mathematics.

In the current climate of educational change and with the implementation of new initiatives within the Victorian Education Department, such as the Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS) and the Principles of Learning and Teaching (PoLT), educational leaders have begun to reassess the forms of professional learning that teachers and staff members are involved in. This is not isolated to schools as the education industry world wide is developing new outlooks for staff training and development. With researchers such as Cuban, Hargraves and Fullan investigating different forms of professional learning, workplace change and strategy, changes in global professional learning opportunities are evident across a variety of industries. The purpose of this study is to gain a better understanding of which styles and formats of professional learning are the most effective in a local context. Different scenarios of professional learning are described and interrogated and the impact of each practice is considered. The study provides an insight into the different types of professional learning that are available to the teaching staff, allowing for a more diverse range of professional learning practices in one school. The researcher worked with the teaching staff in a school to ascertain which professional learning styles had a greater and more positive impact on curriculum and teaching practices within the learning environment.

A review of the literature revealed that there are many variables that influence teachers' instructional practices. These influential variables fall into three categories: those related to the teacher, which are referred to in this study as teacher role characteristics; those related to the inservice education activities of teachers, referred to as staff development variables; and those related to the teachers' individual teaching situations, referred to as school climate variables. It was hypothesized that there may be variables that are related to the use of manipulatives for mathematics instruction by primary grade teachers. Nineteen independent variables in the three categories were studied. In order to investigate the hypotheses, a population of teachers was located in eight school districts outside of but within a sixty-mile radius of Corvallis, Oregon, and a sample was drawn from those teachers having some specialized training in the use of manipulatives beyond their initial teacher certification college coursework. One hundred eighty teachers were mailed a survey instrument, designed and field-tested by the researcher, whose purpose was to determine amount of manipulatives use. Following the completion of this survey, there were 145 participating teachers who were then sent a questionnaire, designed and field-tested by the researcher, which Pearson correlations were calculated for the variables based on continuous data and one-way analysis of variance was computed for the variables based on categorical data. Multiple regression analysis was then performed on the three independent variables that were statistically significant at the .05 level. A teacher's attitude toward the usefulness of manipulatives training, his/her current teaching beliefs (child-centeredness), and perceived attitude of students' parents were all highly correlated with manipulatives use. In the final regression model, each of these three variables made a unique contribution for explaining the variance in teachers' use of manipulatives. Other variables that may also have some relationship to the use of manipulatives included: quality of manipulatives training, follow-up from initial manipulatives training, and perceived response from students.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the ways in which Social Network Analysis can be used to enhance the conitinuous professional development of the Mathematics teachers of a secondary school. With this in mind a literature study was first undertaken in order to clarify exactly what is meant by a Social Network Analysis perspective, online social networks and the continuous professional development of teachers. The study was framed in a Multi Method Mixed Methods framework to enable the integration of a Design Based (DBR) study and Social Network Analysis (SNA) in different phases of the overarching research. The purpose of the DBR study was to design and develop an online social network to provide the Mathematics teachers of sufficient opportunities for continuous professional development. The assumtion was made that the online social network will develop into a Learn 2.0 technology if a) it could provide access to appropriate content, b) teachers could use it to develop own professional development opportunities, c) it could provide opportunities for collaboration between the teachers and d) if it could provide opportunities to connect with those teachers who could contribute their Professional Development. This study refers to the ties which were used to enable the flow of information, knowledge, advice, leadership, support, experience and concrete artefacts (documents) as a teachers’ Personal Development Network. From a SNA perspective the personal development networks of the teachers cannot be fully understood without studying the social network in which these ties are embedded. I refer to this network as the Development Network. The development network is at any given point a stable social construct, but it changes as soon as new ties vii are formed or old ties disintegrate. Therefore a Social Network Analysis was done before, during and after the intervention to explore the development network to understand, explain and predict the effectiveness of CPTD. The findings show that DPO.com (the online social network) provided the teachers of sufficient CPTD opportunities and developed during the course of the study into a Learn 2.0 technology. It also shows that SNA provides an effective method to understand and predict the CPTD of the Mathematics teachers.

The aim of the study is to explore the extent to which a University of Technology prepares pre-service teachers to teach the school Mathematics and Technology curriculum in South Africa. The study employed a combination of a qualitative method and case study approach. Participants were ten (10) Mathematics and nine (9) Technology pre-service teachers, totaling nineteen (19) participants. Data collection were done through an exploratory approach of document analyses, semi-structured interviews, and non-participant observations. The study was guided by two (2) conceptual frameworks, that is, Knowledge-Based for Teaching (Shulman, 1987) and the 7E instructional model from Eisenkraft (2003). This study found that Mathematics and Technology teacher training were not comprehensive enough to prepare pre-service teachers to teach the South African school curriculum.

The study focused on an exploration of utilisation of Mathematics skills by Technology Education pre-service teachers to enhance conceptual understanding of Electronic Systems during the design and construction of artefacts. This study attempted to discover Mathematics concepts that pre-service teachers utilised in the completion of their artefacts and it encapsulated design and making of a model of a house and an electronics circuit. Data were collected through qualitative participant observation, semi-structured interviews and the submission of working artefacts. A sample considered for this study was the whole cohort in the EDTE 210 Electronic Systems course at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. Data were collected through observation of construction of a model house and design of a circuit for Electronic Systems in different phases. In each phase of design, observations and notes were supplemented by semi-structured interview questions as design and construction unfolded. Observation looked for the geometry involved in design of a model house and algebra involved in the design of electronic circuits. Data from interviews with the pre-service teachers indicated mathematical connotations in both the modelling of the house and electronics circuits. It was imperative to know how and why certain measurements, angles and shapes were used for their model houses. Furthermore, it was essential to understand the motives behind particular manipulation of different formulas, conversions and fraction implications by pre-service teachers in their design of effective circuit diagrams. Pre-service teachers at a university level have arithmetic experience which can be used in Technology and may be extended to mainstream Mathematics. It was observed that design and making of this project exposed concepts of Mathematics that made Electronic Systems manageable and comprehensible. Use of projects was discovered to have a positive impact on enhancing understanding of abstract concepts in Mathematics that are essential for Electronic Systems. It is believed that these skills of integrating different areas of learning through interdisciplinarity are paramount for pre-service teachers, as they will soon assume autonomous professional positions for curriculum design in Technology. This provides a diverse approach to conceptual understanding of Electronic Systems through participative learning. Findings and recommendations for effective teaching of Electronic Systems through mathematical skills/concepts are outlined.
