Introduction: Substance Use Disorders (SUDs) cause significant distress to millions of Americans and considerable impact to society at large. Stigmatization of mental illness has been identified as the number-one barrier to seeking healthcare and it is unclear to what degree Mental Health Professionals (MHPs) share this negative bias. Education in SUDs for MHPs may play a role in reducing stigma in the treatment of SUD patients. The effect of education in SUDs on implicit and explicit attitude change is investigated longitudinally in a Substance Abuse Counseling MA Degree Program in Psychology. Academic outcomes and student demographic characteristics are assessed. Hypotheses: Implicit and explicit attitudes will change over the study period and will be related at follow-up. Knowledge acquired of SUDs will predict attitude change. Methods: This study was longitudinal, following 20 students over one year of study via assessment at baseline and follow-up. The drop-out rate was 20%, with 16 students remaining at follow-up. Implicit attitudes were assessed included the SC-IAT, explicit attitudes were assessed with the SAAS (general attitudes), DDQ (discrimination), and SDS (social distance). Academic progress was assessed via an Addictions Knowledge Test and the DDPPQ (confidence treating SUDs). Results: No significant change was found for implicit attitudes. Significant change in the positive direction was found for the SAAS. SAAS scores were positively correlated with DDQ scores at baseline and DDQ and SDS scores at follow-up. Both Addictions Knowledge Test Scores and DDPPQ scores and increased significantly over the study period, but they were not significantly related. DDPPQ scores were positively correlated with all explicit attitude measures. Conclusion: The CMHSAC Program was effective in increasing positive explicit attitudes toward SUDs, but it is unclear if personal attitudes actually shifted or if awareness was brought to the problematic nature of stigma instead. Students’ self-perception of their confidence and competence to work clinically strongly predicted explicit attitude change. Actual knowledge and confidence may not be directly related. Further research is needed to clarify the facets of education that are most effective in stigma reduction. Larger studies should be conducted to further investigate the effect of education on implicit attitudes.

Background: International students (IS) are arguably a population facing both educational and migratory challenges. These are understood within Culture Shock (CS, Oberg, 1960), a process of culture learning. Available literature on IS seems to focus mainly on the phases of CS between the arrival in the host country until adaptation, or at the later stage of returning home. The last part of the IS journey in the host country, before the possible return home, appears neglected. Research suggests that in this period, named the ‘crossroad’ in this study, important decisions could be made, such as whether to stay in or leave the host country. Rationale: Internal struggles, dilemmas and uncertainty can arise due to the possible changes to self that IS can develop while abroad, and could be exacerbated by immigration laws. Thus, the crossroad can be a phase of psychological struggle, which can be of interest to mental health professionals. There is limited qualitative evidence on this sub-phase of CS on IS and this research attempts to address this gap by looking holistically at the subjective experiences of these students and letting their specific psychological needs arise. Methodology and main findings: An interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) was chosen for this research, using semi-structured interviews. Three superordinate themes emerged from the analysis of the transcripts: a) Changes to self and identity; b) Uncertainty, temporariness and emotional responses; c) Dilemmas at the crossroad. The crossroad emerged from the results as a phase dominated by uncertainty towards the future, leading to experiencing difficult emotions such as worry, anxiety and low mood. From the participants’ accounts, it seemed that the limitations imposed by the UK immigration law were the main trigger for such uncertainty, and that IS perceived their circumstances as largely out of their control. The IS’ psychological and emotional responses seemed connected with having developed a sense of belongingness to the UK, resulting from a process of changes to self and identity experienced during their time abroad.

The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of group supervision on counseling self-efficacy of master's-level counseling internship students. Larson's (1998a) Social Cognitive Model of Counselor Training (SCMCT) was used as the theoretical framework for the study. SCMCT addresses how counseling knowledge is transitioned to counseling action. The study was a quantitative, causal-comparative research design. The participants were 135 master's-level counseling internship students from a CACREP-accredited, private college in the southeast United States. Data was collected through the administration of online surveys: Counseling Self-Estimate Inventory (COSE; Larson et al., 1992), Group Supervision Impact Scale (GSIS; Getzelman, 2003), Supervisory Styles Inventory (SSI; Friedlander & Ward, 1984), and a demographics survey. Group supervisor impact (r = .227, p = .008), peer supervisee impact (r = .240, p = .004), and group supervision environment impact (r = .358, p < .001) were significantly correlated with counseling efficacy. Group supervision environment impact was the best predictor variable of counseling self-efficacy, b = .773, t(127) = 3.210, p = .002. There was no significant difference in counseling self-efficacy between participants with master's-level group supervisors and participants with doctorate-level group supervisors, t(133) = .586, p = .559. There was no significant difference in counseling self-efficacy between participants who had a group supervisor licensed in professional counseling and participants who had a group supervisor licensed in a different field, t(133) = .125, p = .901.

Social work students frequently endure elevated levels of prolonged stress and psychological affliction that might result in serious consequences, such as development of burnout. Some experts suggest that burnout originates in the exposure to chronic interpersonal stressors in the work environment. Yet, there is emerging evidence suggesting that mindfulness practice might be beneficial in alleviating stress. Thus, the purpose of this exploratory study was to examine the relationship between mindfulness and burnout among Master of Social Work students. Burnout, mindfulness, religiosity, spirituality and their potential relationship were discussed and related to previous scholarly literature. Specifically, this study focused on testing the hypothesis that current MSW students who demonstrate higher levels of mindfulness will report less burnout, regardless of the year in the MSW program and regardless of the years of practice in human services. In addition, the hypothesis that students currently involved in direct social work practice (either outside of the MSW program, in the MSW field placement, or both) experience higher levels of burnout than students not yet practicing was scrutinized. Moreover, the hypothesis that as students progress in their studies they will exhibit progressively more burnout was explored. Finally, one of this study's goals was to explore whether patterns/relationships between the religious and spiritual beliefs and practices predict burnout levels among Master of Social Work students. Participants were mostly non-Hispanic White females, with a mean age of 35, married (or in legally recognized unions), and first year students enrolled full-time in the Direct Human Services track. Two years was the most common length of their experience in human services. They came from the metropolitan Portland area (on-campus students) and other regions of Oregon (off-site students). The mindfulness of the participants was measured with the Five Facets Mindfulness Scale and the levels of their burnout with the Maslach Burnout Inventory. Study results indicated that the more mindful the MSW students were, the less burnout they reported experiencing. A large correlation of mindfulness to reduced burnout (p < .001) was found, a relationship that persisted when controlling for other significant variables through sequential regression analysis. However, neither year in the MSW program, length of practicing in human services, nor religious/spiritual affiliation and practices had any significant influence on burnout among participants. Given the results of this study demonstrated statistically significant relationships between mindfulness and burnout among social work students, it is recommended that appropriate training in mindfulness for the students (and social workers) affected by secondary trauma and burnout should be incorporated in social work education, either as a part of curricula, or in an extra-curricular training program.

The research question answered by this qualitative, narrative design study is how some couples maintained continued marital intimacy and well-being after prostate cancer surgery. It was directed to a purposeful, critical, and criterion based sampling of 5 heterosexual participant couples between the ages of 52 and 65 years old, who had been married for an average of 29 years and who experienced the disruption in their marriage of prostate cancer and its surgical remedy. The research question created a frame for evaluating literature which provided a basic understanding of the physiology associated with prostate cancer and its treatment options, while recognizing and giving appropriate voice through semi-structured interviews to the compromising and potentially traumatic effects of that surgery on couples’ relationships. In addition to the stresses introduced by a prostate cancer diagnosis, a complexity of emotional and physical concerns is realized with existing treatments, often leading to difficult adjustments and long-term consequences. Although extensive volumes of research attest to the vexing interruption to marital intimacy after prostate cancer surgery, there is a lack of direct, narrative inquiry from long-term married couples addressing instead the question of how they prevailed over those profound challenges. This study subsequently positioned itself to the telling of the participants’ stories, before and after surgery, and to the positive inquiry of how they learned from their lived experiences and demonstrated that learning as resilience, resourcefulness, and a determination to maintain a mutually acceptable level of intimacy and well-being in their enduring marriages. Attributes of a fulfilling marriage were also explored as characterizing a committed and happy long-term relationship which supports wellness of mind, body, and spirit. In addition, inquiry was made into the transpersonal aspects and significance of marital well-being and shared practices which help to sustain it.

When provided an opportunity for thought, individuals experience a strengthening of their already moderate attitude toward some attitude object. This process was studied in the context of variables – attitudes toward behavior, norms about behavior, and perceived behavioral control – known to predict intentions to engage in health-related behavior. A potential moderator of this process – locus of control beliefs – was also investigated. In this study, 195 participants indicated their attitudes toward eight health-related behaviors. Participants were randomly assigned to either a high or low opportunity for thought during which time they were asked to focus their thoughts on the health behavior getting 8 hours of sleep a night. Participants then responded to 18 items measuring Theory of Planned Behavior constructs and the 18-item Multidimensional Health Locus of Control scale. Although self-generated attitude polarization was not observed in this study, evidence was found which supports previous Theory of Planned Behavior and Multidimensional Health Locus of Control research findings. Study limitations and implications are discussed. Keywords: attitudes, attitude change, health locus of control, theory of planned behavior

Illness representations play an important role in the way people with chronic illness manage symptoms and view their overall health. Those suffering from functional somatic syndromes as well as conventional diagnoses seek information and meaning about their health threats in order to make appraisals concerning health outcomes. The primary interest of this study was to determine whether illness representations predict coping strategies which in turn influence general health outcomes. Data was collected from a series of four online surveys that measured an individual’s illness representations (IPQ-R), coping responses (Brief COPE), and health outcomes (RAND-36). The sample included 204 participants (169 females and 30 males) all of whom experienced chronic illness symptoms and were classified as having a functional somatic syndrome (FSS) or conventional diagnosis (CD). As hypothesized, illness perceptions predicted avoidant coping strategies as well as general health. Specifically, illness beliefs of greater consequences and lower coherence were associated with greater reported use of self-blame, behavioral disengagement, and denial. Furthermore, these avoidant coping strategies were associated with poorer health. Self-blame emerged as a coping strategy most associated with illness representations and general health. Although a meditational model was proposed, self-blame did not mediate the relationship between illness consequence and general health. These findings suggest that viewing an illness as having more consequences is associated with more avoidant coping and has a negative impact on the overall general health in those suffering with chronic illness.

Loneliness occurs in the absence of belonging or social connectedness and has been linked to many physical and mental health problems. Among these conditions are depression, anxiety, sleep disturbance, and stress. College students report these four conditions as the largest barriers to good academic performance. For as much is known about loneliness, much less is known about belonging and health or the role loneliness plays in these relationships prompting a need for investigation. Using a sample of 301 university students, we replicated previous findings that loneliness predicts depression, anxiety, sleep disturbance, and stress. Next we replicated and contributed new findings for the relationship between social connectedness and the same health outcomes of interest. Previous research has found gender to be a moderator in the relationship between loneliness and social connectedness. The current study found no evidence of moderation. Based upon the available literature, it was hypothesized that loneliness would mediate the relationship between social connectedness and the health outcomes of interest. Using conditional process modeling, loneliness was found to be a mediator in every case. These findings validate previous findings on the effects of loneliness on health. They also highlight the significance of social connectedness as a factor in health. Future research should investigate the effectiveness of social connectedness as focal point for treatment of mental and physical health conditions.

Objective: To examine the existing literature on the relation between contextual and health factors that influence parent intention for child health behavior change, focusing on the importance of a strong theoretical background and measures that match the proposed theory, and to determine the use of intention in the proposed sample of articles. Method: A preliminary search was conducted, seeking out interventions and programs that target nutrition and/or physical activity in relation to childhood obesity prevention using PsycINFO and MedLine databases. This search totaled 29 studies to be included in the final review. Results: Ten articles studied intention as a dependent variable, twelve with intention as in independent variable, and seven with intention as a mediating variable. A majority of the articles included a theoretical background (86.2%), while 13.8% of the articles did not include any. Seven overall constructs of interest were established: intention/goal, attitudes, self-efficacy, behavior, social support, knowledge/awareness, and norms. Effect sizes for significant pathways were collected/calculated for the specified variables. Finally, behavioral intention was measured inconsistently in each article, some providing reliability, validity, and/or references for the scales measuring intention, while some did not. Conclusions: Childhood obesity prevention and intervention literature is inconsistent in the use of theory, strong measurement, and incorporation of other fields of psychology.

Being without the financial means to have reliable access to enough food to sustain members of a household is known as Food Insecurity (FI; Gundersen, 2013). Previous research has linked FI to obesity and depression (Adams, Grummer-Strawn, & Chavez, 2003; Bronte-Tinkew, Zaslow, Capps, Horowitz, & Mcnamara, 2007; Huddleston-Casas, Charnigo, & Simmons, 2009; Kim & Frongillo, 2007). Although there have been findings about FI being related to depression and obesity, little research has used African Americans; even less research has used young adolescents as the target population. This study had five aims: 1) Observe the impact of FI on health, 2) Observe the impact of weight status on depression, 3) Observe gender effects, 4) Testing mediation effects of child and caregiver depression, and 5) Observe income effects on FI. There were 228 participants (Mage=13.27) recruited from a large Mid-Atlantic city. Self-administered questionnaires were used to assess psychosocial functioning, and caregivers answered the Two-Item Screening Questionnaire for Food Insecurity to assess FI status. FI was not significantly related to child depression but was related to caregiver depression. There was no relation between FI and weight status. Obese children reported higher levels of depression than normal and overweight children; weight had no relation to caregiver depression. Female children had higher rates of depression, overweightness, and obesity. Poverty was not related to FI or depression in children and caregivers. With more FI research, advances can be made to reduce the negative impact of this issue.

Health related outcomes for individuals with chronic symptoms of illness can be influenced by complex, socio-emotional processes. The primary interest of this study was to determine whether perceived social support lessens the negative emotional appraisals of illness experience (e.g. anger, fear, hostile interpretations of illness), and the role of these emotional appraisals in health outcomes for those diagnosed either with a conventional chronic illness (e.g. diabetes, arthritis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) or a functional somatic syndrome (e.g. fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, irritable bowel). Data for this study were collected from a series of four surveys administered online, which included measures of perceived social support (MSPSS), emotional representations of illness (IPQ-R), and health outcomes (SF-36). The sample included 151 participants (129 Female, 22 Male), all of whom experienced chronic somatic symptoms for at least 3 months, with 57 classified as having a conventional diagnosis (CD) and 94 with a functional somatic syndrome (FSS). The results suggest a potential mechanism for the buffering effect of social support, such that those with higher levels of social support reported lower degrees of emotional representations. After controlling for demographic and illness-related variables, social support was a significant predictor of emotional representations of illness. Emotional appraisals of physical symptoms predicted a majority of the health dimensions of the SF-36; including social functioning, role limitations due to physical problems and emotional problems, emotional well-being, vitality, and overall perception of general health. The pattern of findings underscores the need to consider the influence of psychosocial processes on both psychological and physical well-being in populations adjusting to chronic illness.

Previous research indicates loneliness affects physiological and quality of life outcomes in oncology populations. However, minimal research has been conducted specifically on bone and blood marrow transplant (BMT) patients (Knight et al., 2013). To further explore this issue, we conducted a preliminary study to examine the relationship of loneliness with quality of life, immunological functioning, and other health indicators at six months post-transplant in BMT patients. The Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapies–BMT (FACT-BMT) was used to measure QOL and the UCLA Loneliness Scale Version 3 was used to assess general loneliness and loneliness experienced during hospitalization. We found that experiencing loneliness during hospital stay and experiencing loneliness in general was negatively associated with overall quality of life six months after a BMT. Specially, hospital loneliness was associated with poorer social well-being and poorer functional well-being; and loneliness in general was associated with poorer social well-being. In addition, loneliness during hospitalization was related to difficulty managing disease symptoms six-months after a transplant. Hospital loneliness was associated with higher neutrophil counts to monocyte counts 30 days after BMT, which is an indicator of poorer overall survival rate. However, loneliness during hospital stay was not associated with neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio. These results indicate that there is a relation between loneliness experienced during hospitalization and immunological functioning which may adversely impact recovery from a bone marrow transplant.

Although emotional labour has been studied extensively among work populations such as doctors, detectives and adventure tourism guides, there has been no known research on the psychology of actors and acting within an emotional labour framework. This investigation had two purposes. The first was to extend what is currently known about two emotional labour strategies: surface acting, the regulation of observable expressions of emotions, and deep acting, the regulation of felt emotions, to include actual actors. The dependent variables used in this study were job and life satisfaction. The second purpose was to examine whether having a sense of community moderated the relationship between surface acting, deep acting and the dependent variables. Responses from 89 professional, amateur and community theatre actors were analysed. Pearson’s correlation coefficients showed a significant relationship between surface acting and the dependent variables. Hierarchical regression results showed a significant moderation effect for sense of community on the relationship between deep acting and life satisfaction. Implications, limitations, and directions for future research are discussed.

Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) is an autoimmune syndrome characterized by a severe and rapid onset of paralysis that ascends without warning. It has an unknown aetiology and is generally unknown by most people, including medical professionals. When a person who has had GBS is asked to speak about their experience, they are likely to talk about aspects of it that are personally meaningful. Their account can be likened to a story in that it collates seemingly unconnected facts, episodes of activity and emotional attributions into a sequence that provides knowledge and understanding. A story is a powerful form for expressing suffering and experiences and so is particularly suitable for the study of trauma and illness. The actual process of creating the story, plus its presentational and organisational forms, provides sources for uncovering the identities authors choose to create and present of themselves. Six people who have had GBS were interviewed about their experience, and their stories were analysed using a narrative inquiry to discern the meanings attributed to GBS from the participants’ own understandings and perspectives. The intended focus of the research was holistic and content based. The result of the narrative inquiry was a plot common to all six narratives. Namely, GBS is an inexplicable condition, during which horrendous things happen, but people do recover with time and it is likely their life view will be changed in the process. Four fundamental issues, identity, meaning, making sense and meaningfulness were drawn from the stories and configured into a narrative of the researcher’s making. What the participants chose to speak about became the meanings, or themes, major and minor, of their stories. No event has meaning in itself, however traumatic events can precipitate crises of meaning. When these crises are viewed within the context of other events, and are perceived to add value to life, then they have meaningfulness. In the telling of meanings and meaningfulness, the purpose for storying and the audience to whom the story is directed are the criteria for which the storylines are chosen. Both the story and the storying provide opportunities for the authors to create and offer images of themselves, that are then open to interpretation by an audience. As a traumatic experience, GBS enabled six people to tell their stories. In doing so they were able to make sense of important issues for themselves, and re-examine the way they saw themselves and the world.

Counseling can promote positive outcomes for grieving clients by addressing personal loss and helping the client process their grief. However, a lack of understanding on the part of counselors of how people grieve may result in negative client outcomes such as psychological stress, poor health, or an increased risk of depression. Education and training in grief counseling can improve counselors' problem recognition and skills in treatment planning. The purpose of this study was to examine whether Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) master's degree counseling students view themselves as having been adequately trained in grief theories and skills. The theoretical foundation used was modern grief theory based on John Bowlby's work on Attachment Theory. The overall research question was how competent do master's-level counselors view themselves regarding the education or training they received in grief theories or counseling skills in their CACREP-accredited studies. I used a non-experimental, one shot survey comparative quantitative research design. Cicchetti's Grief Counseling Competency Scale (GCCS) was administered to CACREP master's-level counseling students enrolled in their practicum or internship experience, which resulted in 153 participants. Using a MANCOVA, there was significance found for relationships between coursework taken and (a) perceived assessment skills (p = .029), (b) perceived treatment skills (p = .025), and (c) perceived conceptual skills and knowledge (p = .003). Results of this study provided insight for CACREP master's-level counseling programs to explore and discuss curriculum coursework inclusion of education and training in grief theories and skills.

Introduction: The late menopausal transition is a time of increased risk of depression in the general population. Nonetheless, mood course during the late menopausal transition in women with bipolar disorder in relatively unknown. Methods: Mood state data in 519 reproductive age women (5989 clinic visits), 116 late menopausal transition (perimenopausal) women (2046 visits), and 133 postmenopausal women (1,437 visits) with bipolar disorder who were receiving optimized naturalistic treatment in the multisite STEP-BD study over an average of 19.8±15.5 months were analyzed for proportion of clinic visits with syndromal depression, mood elevation and euthymia between the three groups. History of postpartum and perimenstrual mood exacerbation as well as hormone therapy use were evaluated as potential predictors of mood. Results: No significant difference in the proportion of clinic visits with syndromal depression was found between reproductive age (18.1%), perimenopausal (18.1%) and postmenopausal (19.3%) women. Reproductive age women had significantly greater proportion of visits with syndromal mood elevation (5.3%) compared to perimenopausal (4.1%, Z=2.1, p2(3, N = 9960) = 19.8, p Conclusions: While proportion of clinic visits with syndromal depression did not differ among the three reproductive groups, thirteen women who had recorded transition from perimenopause to postmenopause showed significantly greater depression than reproductive age, perimenopausal or postmenopausal women. Proportion of visits with euthymia or with syndromal mood elevation decreased from reproductive age to perimenopausal to postmenopausal women. Reported history of mood exacerbation during times of hormonal fluctuation, or current use of hormone therapy, was not significantly associated with depression during the perimenopause. Limitations include women excluded due to absence of menstrual data. Future studies should include hormonal assessments.

The primary aim of the present study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention provided by Massey University Concussion Clinic for individuals following Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (MTBI). Concussion Clinics were set up across New Zealand to provide early intervention and assessment for individuals with MTBI to prevent long term complaints. Treatment outcomes at these clinics have not been empirically examined before. The current study compared the levels of post concussion symptoms, anxiety, depression, and psychosocial functioning between an intervention and a control group using a quasi-experimental design. In addition, reasons for nonattendance to the clinic, and participants’ perceptions of their recovery were also explored. The main outcome measures used were the Rivermead Postconcussion Symptoms Questionnaire, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, and the Sydney Psychosocial Reintegration Scale-2. Outcomes were initially assessed soon after injury or referral to the clinic and then three months later. Participants were recruited from the Palmerston North Hospital Emergency Department and the Massey University Concussion Clinic. With 20 participants in the intervention group and 15 in the control group, the main results showed that the Concussion Clinic intervention significantly decreased the level of anxiety and depression reported by participants in the intervention group over the control group. Greater improvements in post concussion symptoms and psychosocial functioning were also indicated in the intervention group. Additional findings suggest difficulty with transportation as a reason for nonattendance, which could be a potential barrier to recovery. Furthermore, participants highlighted the benefits of attending the service and its role in their recovery. Important issues relating to the referral processes were also identified. Findings of the current study suggest that the Concussion Clinic intervention is effective in improving recovery for those accessing the service. Nevertheless, these results must be interpreted with caution due to the small sample size. Further research is warranted to examine the effectiveness of the Concussion Clinics with larger samples, and the current study may serve as a valuable pilot for these future investigations.

Deaf individuals experience significant obstacles to participating in behavioral health research when careful consideration is not given to accessibility in the design of study methodology. To inform such considerations, we conducted a secondary analysis of a mixed-methods study that explored 16 Deaf trauma survivors’ help-seeking experiences. Our objective was to identify key findings and qualitative themes from consumers' own words that can be applied to the design of behavioral clinical trials methodology. In many ways, the themes that emerged are what we would expect of any research participant, Deaf or hearing – a need for communication access, empathy, respect, strict confidentiality procedures, trust, and transparency of the research process. However, additional considerations must be made to better recruit, retain, and engage Deaf trauma survivors. We summarize our findings in a “Checklist for Designing Deaf Behavioral Clinical Trials” to operationalize the steps researchers should take to apply Deaf-friendly approaches in their empirical work.

Self-management programmes provide one form of education for people with diabetes. Evaluations of these programmes allow for a better understanding in regard to their impact and whether outcomes are met. Very little research has used qualitative methods to capture participants’ experiences of these programmes and their perception of psychological outcomes. This is the first qualitative evaluation of the Type 2 Diabetes Self-Management Programme in Whangarei. It has adopted an interpretative-phenomenological approach to explore participants’ experiences of the programme and participants’ perceptions in regard to their self-efficacy and quality of life after attending a course. A sample of 7 participants with diabetes provided data via interviews 4 weeks and 3 months after attending the course. The themes that emerged from the initial interview were separated into three evaluation components. In “6 weeks sounded very long but it was worth the time”, participants discussed enrolment, benefits of the course and suggestions for future participants. In “I know what I need to do and I’m confident to do it”, participants linked the gained knowledge from the course to improvements in their self-efficacy regarding self-management behaviours, education and control of own life. In “Life is good, diabetes is just another thing to handle”, participants reflected on the impact of living with diabetes and changes to their life. An overarching theme of settling into a comfortable routine emerged from the follow-up interview. Participants reflected positively on their course and research participation. The programme was perceived to be beneficial to participants, impacting positively on increasing knowledge, self-efficacy development, behaviour changes and quality of life. The participants maintained these benefits in the short-term. These results are discussed in terms of the need for further research to evaluate if benefits are maintained in the long-term, referral process to the programme, decision-making process in regard to enrolment and impact of a support person attending the programme. Practice implications for the programme are discussed in regard to incorporating a follow-up phone call to participants after they attended a course and offering follow-up sessions with the latest information on diabetes care.

The aim of the present study was to compare the effects of barefoot versus shod running on working memory. I recruited exercise science students from the University of North Florida who exercised recreationally. Participants ran both barefoot and shod while hitting targets (poker chips) on a running track and without targets. I measured working memory using backward digit recall and also recorded participants’ heart rate, speed, and target accuracy. The main finding from this study was that working memory performance increased in the barefoot condition when participants hit targets (poker chips). This result supports the idea that additional attention is needed when running barefoot to avoid stepping on objects that could potentially cause harm to the foot. Significant increases in participant’s heart rate were also found in the barefoot condition but not in the shod condition. No significant differences found in participants’ speed in the barefoot or shod condition, nor were there any in the target or no target condition. Together, these findings suggest that individuals working memory increases after at least sixteen minutes of barefoot running if they have to look at the ground to avoid objects that may cause harm to their feet. Barefoot running may help individuals of all ages; from delaying the onset of cognitive deterioration in the elderly, obesity prevention for individuals of all ages, to providing a boost in cognitive performance for children who are behind their peers in school.

Having a chronic illness may feel alienating, yet examination of the literature shows limited research on social connectedness and health. In order to contribute to the understanding of this impact of illness, I examined perceived levels of social connectedness in persons with chronic diseases (CD), functional somatic syndromes (FSS) and medically unexplained symptoms (MUS). A major focus of this study was to investigate the association of social connectedness with depression, anxiety, and general health in patients with ongoing symptoms of illness. Data collection was obtained through the use of four online surveys collectively known as VOICE (Verification of Coping, Illness and Experience). For the purposes of this study, five measures were used: the Social Connectedness Scale, Short Form Health Survey (SF-36), Patient Health Questionnaire depression scale (PHQ-8), Hopkins Symptoms Checklist (HSCL) and the Social Impact Scale. Participants were recruited through announcements via online message boards and support groups, as well as through the distribution of brochures in local medical practices. A total of 148 participants (80% female) completed all four surveys. Results indicated that the chronic illness groups did not significantly differ in social connectedness, although there was some indication that the FSS group felt more social isolation. Regression analyses indicated that, while accounting for socio-cultural and health factors, social connectedness was the strongest predictor of depression (β = - .43, p < .001), anxiety (β = -.48, p < .001) and general health (β = .34, p < .001) in chronically ill persons. The independent and robust relationship of social connectedness with psychological and physical health in individuals with chronic illness suggests that this is an important factor deserving of future research with important clinical applications.

This study investigates social connectedness and social support in a military and civilian college population, and their associations with psychological, physical and stress-related health. There were 301 total participants, 51 of which were military personnel. The participant’s ages ranged from 18-59 (M = 23.48, SD = 7.24), with majority of the participants being female (71.8%), Caucasian (66.1%) and in a relationship (50.8%). The study was administered online via SONA. The following measures were administered in this study: the Social Connectedness Scale, the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, the Physical Health Questionnaire, MOS Short Form Survey Instrument, UCLA Loneliness Scale, the Depression Patient Health Questionnaire, Hopkins Symptom Checklist Anxiety Scale, and the PTSD Checklist- Civilian Version. Veteran students indicated several issues while transitioning to higher education, as well as, several factors that they feel make them unique from their peers. Social connectedness significantly predicted all measures of health, especially PTSD (β = -.43, p < .001), depression (β = -.47, p < .001) and general health (β = -.30, p < .001), with higher rates of social connectedness denoting less symptoms. The social support’s association with health via the main effect model was supported by the results, whereas, the buffering hypothesis model was not supported. Social support was most predictive of anxiety (β = -.28, p < .001), PTSD (β = -.37, p < .001) and general health (β = .36, p < .001). Military status was not associated with social connectedness, rendering the serial multiple mediation model untestable. This study provides empirical evidence that social connectedness is a powerful and pervasive human need, with important health implications.

Moyamoya disease is a rare entity characterized by progressive narrowing of intracranial blood vessels. In most cases, Moyamoya does not respond well to medical therapy and often leads to surgical revascularization. The physiological benefits of the revascularization surgery for Moyamoya patients have been well documented, yet the effects of surgery on cognitive skills and abilities are far less studied. Participants in the current study were 33 patients, 24 to 85 years of age, who underwent revascularization surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida. All patients underwent a physical and cognitive preoperative evaluation, where speech, memory, and intellectual processes were measured. After surgery, patients returned for three follow-up assessments over a period of six months. All patients experienced stabilization or improvement of physiological symptoms. Regarding cognitive functions, speech, memory, and intellectual processes improved significantly after surgery. Results showed not only a reduction of physiological symptoms, but also a significant cognitive improvement postsurgery. This study adds to the research of this disease and to the benefits of treatment. More research can only strengthen these findings and educate healthcare professionals; helping them reaffirm Moyamoya patients have a better quality of life, by reinforcing the benefits of revascularization surgery.

In order to obtain a closer look into the psychosocial impact of chronic conditions, symptom severity, loss of resources, and demoralization were investigated through a mediation analysis. The function and implication of social support was also explored within the circumstances of chronic conditions. Lastly, symptom chronicity was probed as an influential element in the understanding of the consequences of being chronically ill. Participants were 200 men and women, with a mean age of 46 years, and the dataset came from the VOICE (Verification of Illness and Coping Experience) survey. The concepts of Conservation of Resources (COR) theory and Demoralization Syndrome were utilized to portray the underlying processes experienced by individuals with chronic condition. Analyses between symptom severity and demoralization via loss of resources as the mediator were statistically significant. Symptom chronicity did not interact with symptom severity on predicting loss of resources, but analyses showed that individuals with less symptom chronicity reported both larger loss of resources and demoralization. Social support was confirmed as a moderator, buffering the effects of symptom severity on loss of resources. Exploratory analyses with the inclusion of both symptom severity and chronicity as the predictor variable and the use of age as a moderating factor at the prediction of loss of resources was statistically significant, showing that when symptoms were more severe and chronic, younger participants experienced more losses than older participants. Additionally, when age was included as a moderator of the effect of symptom chronicity and severity on the prediction of social support, it was indicated that when symptoms were less chronic and severe, the average perception of social support was higher among younger participants, but, on the other hand, when symptoms were more chronic and severe, younger participants suffered an abysmal drop in their social support perception. In light of the aforementioned results, risk, protective, and developmental aspects are discussed, along with implications for health care providers.

Background: With reports of significant global suicide rates suggestion is that research of suicidal ideation and mental health conditions, as well as identification of alternative “at-risk” populations is an effective research direction. While the construction industry has been suggested to have higher rates of suicide in comparison to the general working population, little research or synthesisation of current knowledge has been undertaken focussing on suicidal ideation and mental health condition prevalence and rates for this population. Aims: To summarise current understandings of prevalence and rates of suicidal ideation and mental health conditions in the construction industry, as well as identify possible methodological limitations in the area. Method: Random effects meta-analyses were used to calculate pooled prevalence, odds and risks of mental health conditions for those employed in the construction industry. Results: Thirteen studies investigating mental health conditions in the construction industry were included in the meta-analysis. No articles regarding suicidal ideation were identified. Pooled prevalence rates suggested a slight increase in mental health conditions for those employed in the construction industry (17.5%, CI95% = 11.7-22.5%) in comparison to suggested global rates, with an increase observed when adjusting for non-clinical assessments of mental health conditions (19.2%, CI95% = 12.9-27.7%) and when adjusting for both for non-clinical assessments of mental health conditions and underrepresentation of sample (20.1%, CI95% = 11.9-32.1%). Pooled Odds Ratio’s (OR) suggested no greater odds of experiencing a mental health condition for those employed in the construction industry (OR = 1.412, CI95% = 0.798–2.499), however, when adjusting for underrepresentation of sample, a statistically significant OR was observed (OR = 1.050, CI95% = 1.011–1.091). Pooled Risk Ratio’s (RR) suggested no increased risk of mental health conditions in the construction industry (RR = 1.068, CI95% = 0.875–1.304), a finding also observed when adjusting for non-clinical assessments of mental health conditions (RR = 1.443, CI95% = 0.549–3.791), or underrepresentation of sample (RR = 1.511, CI95% = 0.651–3.507). Conclusions: This is the first comprehensive meta-analytical review of suicidal ideation and mental health conditions in the construction industry and highlights the need for greater amounts of research and use of standardised methodologies in this area. The current study suggests a slightly increased prevalence and odds of mental health conditions experienced by construction workers however, further research is required to confirm these suggestions.

Objective: Associations between spirituality and physical health, mental health, and quality of life are increasingly being acknowledged, aligning with Indigenous Australian understandings of the importance of spirituality in health. Spirituality has traditionally been misrepresented as synonymous to religion in its instrumentation. Despite the increased interest in spirituality, a review of tools that measure spirituality as distinct from religion has not been conducted since 2011. Methods: This systematic scoping review mapped studies utilising non-religious spirituality instruments in order to understand how spirituality relates to health, and to describe the cultural groups and countries in which these tools have been validated. Results: Sixty-one studies were included in the review. The most commonly used spirituality instrument was the Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy-Spiritual Wellbeing Scale (39.3% of studies). A total of 41 health outcomes were explored in their relationship to spirituality, and of the physical health (35.7%) and mental or psychological health (66.7%) outcomes assessed, the most frequently reported associations were with depression (n = 29), anxiety (n = 15) and quality of life (n = 15). Identification of cultural orientation in these studies was low, and the majority of studies were conducted in the USA with mostly White populations. Only 3 studies utilised instruments developed for specific cultural groups. Conclusion: Few spirituality instruments have been developed to measure spirituality adequately across cultures or as distinct from religion. However, encouraging associations between spirituality and a broad range of health outcomes have been observed which provides implications for future healthcare research and practice.

The experience of engaging in sport and recreational activities is largely different for Indigenous peoples when compared to non-Indigenous populations. There is a need to consolidate the current qualitative evidence base to facilitate sporting and recreation opportunities that could promote holistic benefits for Indigenous peoples. It is evident that sport and health research on Indigenous communities is inconsistent in its quality and cultural safety. This study aims to explore the current landscape of Indigenous qualitative health research within the context of sport. The purpose of this study was to produce a meta-study of qualitative research examining sport and recreation experiences of Indigenous peoples in Australia, New Zealand, the United States, and Canada. After identification and screening, 27 articles were retained for analysis and synthesis. Characteristics of included studies were exmined through the meta-method and meta-theory analysis. The meta-data analysis revealed five themes (barriers and facilitators to engagement, physical health benefits, racism and discrimination, social and emotional wellbeing, and community spirit) and several subthemes representative of the sport and recreation experiences of Indigenous people and communities. The final meta-synthesis situates these themes within an Indigenous model of wellbeing and synthesises the method, theory and data of the included studies. This review consolidates the evidence base and provides direction for future research and best practice.

Issue addressed: Alcohol consumption during pregnancy is associated with significant risks for the unborn child, including Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders, physical deformities and cognitive deficits. Though considerable efforts to minimise alcohol consumption by pregnant women have been made, many women globally continue to consume alcohol while pregnant. As such, there remains a need to understand women's attitudes towards alcohol use in pregnancy. This study aims to investigate pregnant women's attitudes towards the consumption of alcohol during pregnancy. Methods: A meta-synthesis using a meta-aggregative approach was employed. Seven databases (CINAHL, EMBASE, PubMed, PsychINFO, Scopus, Sociological Abstracts and Web of Science) were searched from database inception until mid-May 2021. Potentially eligible articles underwent a quality appraisal before being synthesised. Results: 21 studies met inclusion criteria. Critical appraisals revealed that the reporting quality of included studies was generally high. Three synthesised findings describe the complexities of navigating health advice, implications of abstaining from alcohol during pregnancy, and questions of bodily autonomy. Conclusions: Women receive confusing and contradictory advice regarding the consumption of alcohol in pregnancy. Decisions to consume alcohol in pregnancy are complex, nuanced, and socially situated. Therefore, those offering health advice to pregnant women must consider these complexities. So what? Health campaigns and health professionals must offer consistent health advice with a clear rationale for recommendations to avoid alcohol in pregnancy. Interventions that seek to improve pregnant women’s self-efficacy and involve their support networks are also likely reduce alcohol consumption in pregnancy.

The present study sought to qualitatively explore the experiences of parents bereaved by childhood cancer. Semi-structured interviews with 12 Australian parents bereaved by childhood cancer were examined using reflexive thematic analysis. Five themes relating to parents’ experiences of, and preferences for, bereavement support were generated. The current findings highlight the need for early and ongoing support; care, and empathy from close health professionals especially in communicating with parents; greater inclusivity of men in supports; increased accessibility for those outside of metropolitan areas; and the value of peer support when managed well.

Pelvic floor disorders, notably stress urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse, impact on women’s quality of life. A common surgical treatment method known as transvaginal mesh implant surgery has been used in recent times to rectify these impacts. Although successful for many women, this procedure has led to controversy due to growing accounts of adverse complications, leading to a recent Parliament of Australia Senate Inquiry. This paper will discuss these issues, provide context for the complications through the biopsychosocial model, and provide recommendations for future research.

While most children are now surviving a diagnosis of cancer, a number of psychosocial impacts of the disease are becoming increasingly apparent, including poorer schooling outcomes. Given that schooling is such an integral context for child development and an important component of overall adjustment to illness, a number of researchers have highlighted the need for intervention. However, the development of schooling interventions for children with cancer is arguably limited by a lack of research that investigates the impact of cancer upon school adjustment and, importantly, the modifiable factors that may influence this process. This review proposes a theoretical model of school adjustment that offers a framework for exploring these gaps, and in particular, for examining potentially modifiable system-level factors. Schooling interventions that have been documented in the literature will be discussed in relation to these system-level factors. Findings of this review have direct implications for the future development of schooling interventions for children with cancer that are evidence-based.

Parents of hearing-impaired children face unique experiences and challenges, including emotional responses to diagnosis, adapting to their child’s needs, and overall changed life circumstances. They face complex decisions surrounding hearing devices, communication, and education. Additionally, such parents in Australia have been confronted with another prominent challenge, navigating the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). The scheme is in its infancy, with numerous issues reported. Therefore, ongoing research into NDIS experiences is warranted. No research to date has explored the impact of the NDIS on the wellbeing of families with hearing-impaired children, a noteworthy endeavour for future research.

Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed solid organ cancer in Australian men. Though survivorship rate is high for those diagnosed, quality of life is often significantly affected. Current literature suggests that general practitioners caring for men with prostate cancer often focus on regaining biological function and capacity, neglecting psycho-social-sexual factors. This literature review will provide an overview of prostate cancer and treatment pathways. It will also explore the impacts of prostate cancer through a biopsychosocial lens. It highlights the barriers that general practitioners face in relation to psycho-social-sexual concerns and why they need to consider utilising a biopsychosocial model of care.

Objective: Chronic pain is a prevalent and costly public health problem for young people. The associated physical, psychosocial, and psychological burdens, including higher degrees of social isolation, are well documented. New pathways to receive and offer support can be found within online social support (OSS). Research indicates OSS features impact the frequency of use, reach, safety and overall experience for the user. We conducted a rigorous internet search to identify and appraise the available English-language OSS worldwide for young people with chronic pain. Methods Through Google, two complementary search strategies were used to identify available OSS. In the first approach, Boolean operators were used to connect a string of search terms. To access websites young people might find online, a second approach was used following a standard Google query including four to six words. The general characteristics and features of the available OSS were then extracted. Results The two search strategies produced a total yield of 1319 websites. A total of 11 OSS websites were identified meeting inclusion criteria. Characteristics of OSS varied significantly, such as, moderation, site access requirements, and safeguarding features. Only two of the OSS sites, both being affiliated with a hospital, offered all of the features suggested by the literature to mitigate the potential for harm. Conclusions Despite the prevalence of chronic pain in young people and clear benefits to utilise support online, there is a paucity of available OSS. To enable the development of improved OSS for young people with chronic pain, the features and formal structures on which they are built should be considered.
