The problem of reconciling the subjectively known mind with the objectively known brain has puzzled philosophers and scientists for centuries. When attempting to solve this problem in recent times, the focus has been on explaining how the mind is born from the brain, how the two are related, and how we can best understand them. This problem is of particular relevance to clinical psychology because it attempts to both understand and explain pathological presentations by appealing to both subjective personal experience and objective knowledge of the physicality of the brain. In this respect, clinical psychology straddles the gap between mind and brain. This thesis investigates the implications of the mind/brain problem for theory and practice in clinical psychology. Chapter one identifies the tension between knowing the world subjectively and knowing the world objectively and discusses the importance of understanding this tension when investigating the mind/brain problem. Chapter two sets out the foundational concepts of cognitive behavioural approaches in clinical psychology, looking in particular at how cognitive behavioural approaches conceptualise mental events like thoughts and beliefs. It is concluded that while cognitive behavioural approaches to clinical psychology regularly incorporate both mentalistic and physical concepts in its theory and practice, it does not address the inherent problems in their combined use, as revealed by the mind brain/problem. In order to improve the use of mentalistic concepts within the theory and practice of cognitive behaviourally based clinical psychology, chapter three explores the major conceptualisations of mind from the discipline of philosophy of mind. To achieve this improvement, chapter four, suggests that refining of mentalistic concepts in clinical psychology, through the application of philosophical concepts of mind, can be made possible through the use of a framework that captures the different explanatory levels at which the mind/brain operates. The levels-of-explanation framework is put forward for this purpose. Of particular relevance to clinical psychology is the ability to retain the importance of autonomous, subjectively experienced, and causally efficacious mental events, while at the same time, being able to give a realistic account of how these mental events are linked to the physical brain. The levels-of-explanation framework is judged to be a suitable approach with which to achieve this. In chapters five and six, the implications of clinical psychology's use of mentalistic concepts are explored in relation to evidence-based practice and case formulation. It is shown that through a greater understanding of both the nature of mind and the relationship between the mind and the brain, improvements can be made to both the theory and practice of cognitive behaviourally base clinical practice. This is achieved through the application of philosophical concepts of mind, via a levels-of-explanation framework, while both researching and undertaking clinical practice in clinical psychology.

Thesis (MSc (Clinical Psychology)) -- University of Limpopo, 2010.
The Clinical Psychology training program at the University of Limpopo (Medunsa Campus) is based on the theoretical paradigm of General Systems Theory. The functioning of systems in terms of patterns, structure, organization and relationships can therefore also be applied to the trainee and his/her partner relationship system which is characterized by circular patterns of interaction. Ernst (2008) states that within the context of General Systems theory it became evident that the trainee does not function in isolation but as part of a system. The trainee undergoes significant changes throughout the training year if training is effective and this in turn may also impact on the trainee's partner relationship. This investigation was done to establish the effect of a DVD Counselling Programme on the partner-relationship of the trainee in Clinical Psychology with his/her partner/spouse. This is done in order to provide feedback to the trainers of the Clinical Psychology training at Medunsa. This may also possibly assist in establishing a more scientifically founded aid for the trainees in Msc. Clinical Psychology and their partners/spouses. It was a qualitative research project, in which person centered interviews were held with participants and thematically analyzed by three independent clinicians. The entire research project and findings are contextualized in accordance with General Systems Theory. The results indicated that the DVD had a moderate effect on 4/6 of the sample population that reported that their relationship improved in respect of the nature and quality based on mutual understanding, emotional closeness, obtaining of relational skills, effective communication and awareness regarding the impact of the training year on their relationship. The impact of the DVD was somewhat limited in that not all the participants watched it and the manner iIi which some of the trainees approached their partners/spouses, which may have had an effect on how the DVD is received and experienced.

From 2011?2015, The Master?s Touch ministry has been the formal agency for the work of visiting the sick and shut-in at the Mount Moriah A.M.E. Church in New York. The purpose of this study is to determine any correlation between the visitations themselves and the level of local church commitment by the visited family members over these four years. This study is important because persons visited receive the benefits of pastoral care, while the impact on their families may not be as apparent. This research will focus on data from interviews conducted with family members in order to ascertain if there is any change to their level of local church commitment.

Ethical codes and laws provide counselors with guidance for how to approach confidentiality, but there is a gap in the literature surrounding counselors' process of decision-making when managing confidentiality with adolescent clients. This study explored the decision-making process of master therapists concerning adolescent clients. I conducted semi-structured interviews with peer identified master therapist (N=10), all of whom were licensed professional counselors with 15 or more years of counseling experience and whose case load contained 25% or more adolescent clients. Participants included seven females and three males; nine participants identified as Caucasian, and one participant identified as Hispanic. Participants ages ranged from 39-61. I analyzed the data, along with two research partner, according to Grounded Theory (GT) methodology. Through constant comparative analysis, a grounded theory emerged from the data in which participants converged understanding of client safety, relationships, clinical intuition in a process of integrated experience and consultation. With the exception of mandated reported and mortal danger, ethical guidelines and laws did not seem to factor into participants' decision making. Implications for counseling practice, preparation, and research are provided.

Introduction: The late menopausal transition is a time of increased risk of depression in the general population. Nonetheless, mood course during the late menopausal transition in women with bipolar disorder in relatively unknown. Methods: Mood state data in 519 reproductive age women (5989 clinic visits), 116 late menopausal transition (perimenopausal) women (2046 visits), and 133 postmenopausal women (1,437 visits) with bipolar disorder who were receiving optimized naturalistic treatment in the multisite STEP-BD study over an average of 19.8±15.5 months were analyzed for proportion of clinic visits with syndromal depression, mood elevation and euthymia between the three groups. History of postpartum and perimenstrual mood exacerbation as well as hormone therapy use were evaluated as potential predictors of mood. Results: No significant difference in the proportion of clinic visits with syndromal depression was found between reproductive age (18.1%), perimenopausal (18.1%) and postmenopausal (19.3%) women. Reproductive age women had significantly greater proportion of visits with syndromal mood elevation (5.3%) compared to perimenopausal (4.1%, Z=2.1, p2(3, N = 9960) = 19.8, p Conclusions: While proportion of clinic visits with syndromal depression did not differ among the three reproductive groups, thirteen women who had recorded transition from perimenopause to postmenopause showed significantly greater depression than reproductive age, perimenopausal or postmenopausal women. Proportion of visits with euthymia or with syndromal mood elevation decreased from reproductive age to perimenopausal to postmenopausal women. Reported history of mood exacerbation during times of hormonal fluctuation, or current use of hormone therapy, was not significantly associated with depression during the perimenopause. Limitations include women excluded due to absence of menstrual data. Future studies should include hormonal assessments.

Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) is an autoimmune syndrome characterized by a severe and rapid onset of paralysis that ascends without warning. It has an unknown aetiology and is generally unknown by most people, including medical professionals. When a person who has had GBS is asked to speak about their experience, they are likely to talk about aspects of it that are personally meaningful. Their account can be likened to a story in that it collates seemingly unconnected facts, episodes of activity and emotional attributions into a sequence that provides knowledge and understanding. A story is a powerful form for expressing suffering and experiences and so is particularly suitable for the study of trauma and illness. The actual process of creating the story, plus its presentational and organisational forms, provides sources for uncovering the identities authors choose to create and present of themselves. Six people who have had GBS were interviewed about their experience, and their stories were analysed using a narrative inquiry to discern the meanings attributed to GBS from the participants’ own understandings and perspectives. The intended focus of the research was holistic and content based. The result of the narrative inquiry was a plot common to all six narratives. Namely, GBS is an inexplicable condition, during which horrendous things happen, but people do recover with time and it is likely their life view will be changed in the process. Four fundamental issues, identity, meaning, making sense and meaningfulness were drawn from the stories and configured into a narrative of the researcher’s making. What the participants chose to speak about became the meanings, or themes, major and minor, of their stories. No event has meaning in itself, however traumatic events can precipitate crises of meaning. When these crises are viewed within the context of other events, and are perceived to add value to life, then they have meaningfulness. In the telling of meanings and meaningfulness, the purpose for storying and the audience to whom the story is directed are the criteria for which the storylines are chosen. Both the story and the storying provide opportunities for the authors to create and offer images of themselves, that are then open to interpretation by an audience. As a traumatic experience, GBS enabled six people to tell their stories. In doing so they were able to make sense of important issues for themselves, and re-examine the way they saw themselves and the world.

Deaf individuals experience significant obstacles to participating in behavioral health research when careful consideration is not given to accessibility in the design of study methodology. To inform such considerations, we conducted a secondary analysis of a mixed-methods study that explored 16 Deaf trauma survivors’ help-seeking experiences. Our objective was to identify key findings and qualitative themes from consumers' own words that can be applied to the design of behavioral clinical trials methodology. In many ways, the themes that emerged are what we would expect of any research participant, Deaf or hearing – a need for communication access, empathy, respect, strict confidentiality procedures, trust, and transparency of the research process. However, additional considerations must be made to better recruit, retain, and engage Deaf trauma survivors. We summarize our findings in a “Checklist for Designing Deaf Behavioral Clinical Trials” to operationalize the steps researchers should take to apply Deaf-friendly approaches in their empirical work.

Abstract It is estimated that approximately 16-20% of youth will develop a diagnosable behavior disorder. Behavioral parent training is a valuable approach to address disruptive behaviors by teaching parents how to effectively manage their child’s challenging behavior with non-physical disciplinary techniques. While these programs are generally effective, attrition rates have been found to be as high as 60% in some cases. This review provides information about the characteristics commonly associated with these programs, the attrition rates of each program, and the general effectiveness of the programs. Meta-analytic procedures were implemented to identify contributing factors leading to withdrawal from intervention. The primary aim of the present study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention provided by Massey University Concussion Clinic for individuals following Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (MTBI). Concussion Clinics were set up across New Zealand to provide early intervention and assessment for individuals with MTBI to prevent long term complaints. Treatment outcomes at these clinics have not been empirically examined before. The current study compared the levels of post concussion symptoms, anxiety, depression, and psychosocial functioning between an intervention and a control group using a quasi-experimental design. In addition, reasons for nonattendance to the clinic, and participants’ perceptions of their recovery were also explored. The main outcome measures used were the Rivermead Postconcussion Symptoms Questionnaire, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, and the Sydney Psychosocial Reintegration Scale-2. Outcomes were initially assessed soon after injury or referral to the clinic and then three months later. Participants were recruited from the Palmerston North Hospital Emergency Department and the Massey University Concussion Clinic. With 20 participants in the intervention group and 15 in the control group, the main results showed that the Concussion Clinic intervention significantly decreased the level of anxiety and depression reported by participants in the intervention group over the control group. Greater improvements in post concussion symptoms and psychosocial functioning were also indicated in the intervention group. Additional findings suggest difficulty with transportation as a reason for nonattendance, which could be a potential barrier to recovery. Furthermore, participants highlighted the benefits of attending the service and its role in their recovery. Important issues relating to the referral processes were also identified. Findings of the current study suggest that the Concussion Clinic intervention is effective in improving recovery for those accessing the service. Nevertheless, these results must be interpreted with caution due to the small sample size. Further research is warranted to examine the effectiveness of the Concussion Clinics with larger samples, and the current study may serve as a valuable pilot for these future investigations.

Self-management programmes provide one form of education for people with diabetes. Evaluations of these programmes allow for a better understanding in regard to their impact and whether outcomes are met. Very little research has used qualitative methods to capture participants’ experiences of these programmes and their perception of psychological outcomes. This is the first qualitative evaluation of the Type 2 Diabetes Self-Management Programme in Whangarei. It has adopted an interpretative-phenomenological approach to explore participants’ experiences of the programme and participants’ perceptions in regard to their self-efficacy and quality of life after attending a course. A sample of 7 participants with diabetes provided data via interviews 4 weeks and 3 months after attending the course. The themes that emerged from the initial interview were separated into three evaluation components. In “6 weeks sounded very long but it was worth the time”, participants discussed enrolment, benefits of the course and suggestions for future participants. In “I know what I need to do and I’m confident to do it”, participants linked the gained knowledge from the course to improvements in their self-efficacy regarding self-management behaviours, education and control of own life. In “Life is good, diabetes is just another thing to handle”, participants reflected on the impact of living with diabetes and changes to their life. An overarching theme of settling into a comfortable routine emerged from the follow-up interview. Participants reflected positively on their course and research participation. The programme was perceived to be beneficial to participants, impacting positively on increasing knowledge, self-efficacy development, behaviour changes and quality of life. The participants maintained these benefits in the short-term. These results are discussed in terms of the need for further research to evaluate if benefits are maintained in the long-term, referral process to the programme, decision-making process in regard to enrolment and impact of a support person attending the programme. Practice implications for the programme are discussed in regard to incorporating a follow-up phone call to participants after they attended a course and offering follow-up sessions with the latest information on diabetes care.

There is an age-shift in neurotypical children: younger children tend to remember information in a verbatim manner so they store item-specific surface characteristics; between nine and ten children engage in gist recall where they store meanings of presented information. The aim of the present study was to explore false memory in children with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD), as some research suggests that they develop gist recall at a later age than neurotypical children. We are also interested in the role of working memory. One approach to understanding false memory creation is activation-monitoring (AM) theory. Working memory can play a role during both the activation (encoding) phase, as well as during the monitoring retrieval phase. When working memory is overloaded or suboptimal, source monitoring is compromised at the encoding phase. In this study, we tested high-functioning children with ASD on working memory capacity. In addition, simple sentences were presented to be recalled, each one followed by a short word list that contained a thematically related distractor item. If a child used gist memory to recall the sentence, they would likely substitute the target (e.g., rabbit) word with the distractor (e.g., bunny). However, if they depended on verbatim recall, the distractor would not affect sentence recall performance. Children with lower working memory scores were more likely to incorrect answers to gist questions than those with high working memory. These findings have important implications for everyday social functioning. Though debatable, working memory impairments may encourage false memories in children with ASD.

Current research on factors predicting self-harm focus on disparate factors and may not be able to comprehensively explain the mechanisms causing self-harm. The aim of the current study was to examine factors that may be related yet independently predict self-harm. Factors discussed include rumination, self-criticism, and working memory. A binary logistic regression found that the only factor that predicted the presence of self-harming behavior was a high level of self-criticism. Further, a Classification and Regression Tree found that the single strongest predictor of self-harming behavior was a belief that love needs to be continually earned from others. Our findings have implications for improving the efficacy of interventions aimed at preventing self-harm, which traditionally have been ineffective. Treatments incorporating ways to reduce self-criticism, such as a focus on improving self-compassion with Compassionate Mind Training, may address underlying mechanisms that can trigger self-harm behavior.

The mood-as-input hypothesis was developed to explain perseverative worry. Based on this model, it is predicted that the amount of time individuals persist on tasks is based on their mood, and this hypothesis may explain the tendency for some individuals to engage in prolonged episodes of depressive rumination. However, surprisingly few studies have examined the applicability of the hypothesis to depressive rumination. Based on the mood-as-input hypothesis, it was predicted that persistence at a rumination task would be greatest in a "sad mood" condition paired with an "as many as can" (AMA) stop rule because individuals with depression have a difficult time assessing when to disengage from the rumination process. Participants were randomly assigned to one of three mood conditions (positive, negative, or neutral) through the use of movie clips from the Lion King and one of two stop rules conditions (as many as can or feel like stopping). Participants then completed the Catastrophic Interview Procedure (CIP), in which they were asked to recall a situation or event in their life that is associated with a depressed mood. More steps are indicative of greater rumination. Contrary to previous literature on the topic, there was no significant interaction between mood and stop rules on depressive steps; however the current study was the first to identify rumination as a predictor of variance after controlling for mood and stop rules indicating that the natural tendency to engage in rumination is an additional relevant variable in a basic perseveration task.

The aim of this study was to explore the effect a coloring condition had on minimizing anxiety and stress experienced daily by veterans. The effect that coloring had on working memory was also explored. A sample of 24 armed forces veterans were split into two coloring conditions, a mandala and a free draw condition, and asked to complete the Primary Care PTSD Screen, the Perceived Stress Scale and the Brief State Trait Anxiety Inventory. Working memory scores were established via a Backward Digit Recall task; pre-and posttest scores were evaluated for significant differences. Our research suggests the act of coloring, not the coloring condition, resulted in significant decreases in stress and anxiety and an increase in working memory. We also found that participants who suffer from PTSD displayed significant decreases in stress and anxiety and significant increases in working memory when compared to individuals without PTSD.

Being without the financial means to have reliable access to enough food to sustain members of a household is known as Food Insecurity (FI; Gundersen, 2013). Previous research has linked FI to obesity and depression (Adams, Grummer-Strawn, & Chavez, 2003; Bronte-Tinkew, Zaslow, Capps, Horowitz, & Mcnamara, 2007; Huddleston-Casas, Charnigo, & Simmons, 2009; Kim & Frongillo, 2007). Although there have been findings about FI being related to depression and obesity, little research has used African Americans; even less research has used young adolescents as the target population. This study had five aims: 1) Observe the impact of FI on health, 2) Observe the impact of weight status on depression, 3) Observe gender effects, 4) Testing mediation effects of child and caregiver depression, and 5) Observe income effects on FI. There were 228 participants (Mage=13.27) recruited from a large Mid-Atlantic city. Self-administered questionnaires were used to assess psychosocial functioning, and caregivers answered the Two-Item Screening Questionnaire for Food Insecurity to assess FI status. FI was not significantly related to child depression but was related to caregiver depression. There was no relation between FI and weight status. Obese children reported higher levels of depression than normal and overweight children; weight had no relation to caregiver depression. Female children had higher rates of depression, overweightness, and obesity. Poverty was not related to FI or depression in children and caregivers. With more FI research, advances can be made to reduce the negative impact of this issue.

With his suicide in 1961, Ernest Hemingway seemingly cemented into place his legacy as the classic image of the able-bodied, masculine man; he was, to many, the anti-disability writer, the author who lived for ability, lost ability, and took his life once he realized no chance of regaining his ability existed. Such a narrative, however, ignores the truly complicated and dynamic shape his understanding of the body took. Through an analysis of The Old Man and the Sea, I examine the form this ideology of ability took at the end of his life when, like the novella’s protagonist, Santiago, his failing health forced him to focus on the realities of the inevitable failure of his own body. Through the application of research such as David T. Mitchell and Sharon L. Snyder’s theory of narrative prosthesis, Tobin Siebers’ work on the ideology of ability, and Andrew Farah’s research on Hemingway’s declining physical condition, I demonstrate the ways The Old Man and the Sea legitimizes the disabled body, avoiding, in the process, several common narrative tropes such as the overcoming narrative or the kill-or-cure dichotomy and creating a space in which the inevitable decay of the human body must be seriously and honestly addressed. Through this research, a new more nuanced picture of Hemingway emerges, one that recognizes the complicated and dynamic nature his view of the able-bodied individual took.

Social networking sites are abundant with thin-ideal beauty standards for women. As a result, some users are challenging these unrealistic ideals in creative, humorous ways. The aim of the present study was to experimentally investigate the effect of exposure to humorous, parody images on women’s body dissatisfaction, body shame and mood. Participants were 173 women aged between 18 and 61 years, who were randomly assigned to view either one of three sets of Instagram images: thin-ideal celebrity posts; humorous parody images of the celebrity post paired with the thin-ideal; or the humorous parody post alone. Results indicated that exposure to the parody images alone decreased body dissatisfaction, body shame and negative mood, relative to exposure of thin-ideal images alone. Moreover, exposure to the parody images alone resulted in less body dissatisfaction than exposure to parody images paired with the thin-ideal image. The findings were moderated by trait thin-ideal internalisation, whereby individuals with high thin-ideal internalisation experienced less body dissatisfaction after viewing parody images alone, compared to the paired parody and thinideal images. Overall, the findings contribute to existing literature by providing support for the use of humorous parody images for decreasing body dissatisfaction, body shame and negative mood in women.

Whilst the empirical exploration of forgiveness has grown extensively over the past 30 years, the study of self-forgiveness remains a relatively new topic of interest. Furthermore, few studies have sought to explain how individual difference variables relate to dispositional self-forgiveness. The aim of the present study was to explore how the two facets of pride (authentic and hubristic) relate to and predict our current understandings of self-forgiveness. A secondary aim of this study was to confirm previous findings on shame and guilt-proneness and determine whether pride is still related to self-forgiveness after controlling for these two variables. A convenience sample of 206 participants aged between 18 and 50+ years were recruited from the University of Adelaide first-year psychology pool and through advertising on Facebook and the Relationships Australia database. Participants completed an online questionnaire that measured self-forgiveness and various personality variables. Quantitative analysis involved Pearson’s correlations and conducting three hierarchical multiple regressions. Results indicated that hubristic pride was a significant predictor of genuine self-forgiveness, with authentic pride approaching the borderline of significance. Both pride variables explained an additional 2.90% of the variation in genuine self-forgiveness, with authentic pride being positively related and hubristic pride being negatively related. The results of the present study highlight the impact of dispositional pride as a useful explanatory concept for understanding how individuals perceive, reflect, and move towards the process of genuine self-forgiveness after committing a transgression.

The aim of this review is to summarise and critique current knowledge in psychology on Major Depressive Disorder and its associated symptoms throughout adolescence. Depression occurring during this critical period of vulnerability is associated with the risk of long-term negative consequences at both subclinical and diagnostic levels. The progression of depression symptom development, differences in symptom presentation, overall trends in population prevalence, and heterogeneity in longitudinal patterns are examined. Methodological challenges in conducting surveys and longitudinal research with adolescent populations are discussed, and recommendations for future research are made in light of their application in developing and strengthening intervention programs

Many games feature avatars that enable adoption of, and experimentation with, roles and identities. How avatar- and self-related processes develop and maintain gaming disorder (GD) is unclear. This review examined 18 quantitative studies of avatar- and self-related concepts and problematic gaming, including 13 survey-based and 5 neuroimaging studies. Survey-based studies consistently reported that negative self-concept, avatar identification, and large self-avatar discrepancies were associated with problematic gaming. Poor selfconcept appears to be a GD risk factor. Further research should explain how avatars relate to GD’s addictive mechanisms (e.g., cognitive distortions, reward-seeking), amid calls for GDrelated interventions to focus on avatar identification.

Preterm birth is associated with numerous risks, including deficits in behavioural and academic functioning. However, there is wide variability in outcomes, and conclusions regarding factors that moderate developmental outcomes have not yet been drawn. This review examines the literature regarding outcomes of children born preterm and the differential susceptibility hypothesis as a potential framework for understanding differences in outcomes. Findings of this review indicate that further studies investigating differential susceptibility in preterm children are warranted. Future studies may consider using family functioning as a moderating factor as well as examining ADHD symptom severity to capture a wider range of functioning.

Research has shown that self-forgiveness – a process that tempers psychological distress while also promoting greater self-acceptance – is one way in which individuals can cope with the distress associated with a moral wrongdoing or transgression. With growing interest in the area, this literature review will summarise and evaluate the current research on selfforgiveness. In particular, it will cover the conceptualisation and measurement of selfforgiveness, and explore significant predictors of self-forgiving responses. The process of self-forgiveness has also been found to be effective in promoting positive psychological and relational outcomes. Accordingly, the research on the therapeutic and clinical applications of self-forgiveness will be reviewed. Lastly, the paper will summarise the limitations of the current literature and explore future directions for research on self-forgiveness.

A spinal cord injury (SCI) is a significant and lifelong neurological injury with devastating physical and psychological consequences. With no established cure, effective selfmanagement of symptoms is essential for maintaining long-term health and wellbeing. Selfmanagement interventions have demonstrated effectiveness for physical symptoms and sequelae. However, less is known about this approach for mental health outcomes. Methodological issues, including variation in the specific skills taught in self-management and a reliance on quasi-experimental and uncontrolled study designs, also limit conclusions regarding efficacy. Greater understanding of the psychological benefits of self-management in SCI may be achieved by consolidating the available high-quality evidence in this field.

Children and adolescents in out-of-home care (OOHC) often display disproportionate levels of externalising behaviour problems compared to the general population, which are further linked with detrimental outcomes. Yet, despite similar levels of vulnerability, not all children and adolescents in OOHC develop these behaviours. To inform effective prevention and intervention strategies, it is important to understand individual, familial, and environmental factors that are associated with reduced risk for externalising behaviour problems for children and adolescents living in OOHC. This systematic review aimed to identify and synthesise knowledge on protective factors for externalising behaviour problems in children and adolescents between 0 and 19 years old residing in OOHC. A systematic search was conducted in PubMed, PsycINFO, Embase, CINAHL, and the Proquest Social Abstracts and Social Services databases, with 28 included studies (n=6814). Findings were synthesised in accordance with the Ecological Systems Framework (Bronfenbrenner, 1979; 1994; 2005). Results indicated that protective factors associated with fewer externalising behaviour problems in the microsystem included a better self-concept, active or engaged coping styles, more community interactions, higher school engagement, better school stability, and better quality relationships with biological parents, siblings, caregivers, and peers. In the young person’s exosystem, fewer children in the home and higher neighbourhood income were associated with fewer externalising behaviour problems. No studies in this review investigated protective interactions in the mesosystem, and further research is needed to understand how these could be associated with behaviour problems. Given the short and long-term consequences associated with externalising behaviours, professionals working with children and young people in OOHC should focus on identifying protective factors that can be targeted in prevention and intervention efforts. This review indicated that prevention and intervention efforts can be aimed at individual, relational, and contextual factors.

Depression is a leading cause of global disability. Among many other factors, the development of depressive symptoms across the lifespan has been linked to adverse parenting practices. Previous research has addressed perfectionism and self-compassion as factors that individually mediate the parenting-depression relationship; however, very few studies have taken an integrative approach to examine how these factors interact to influence this relationship. The following review examines theory and previous research regarding the associations between parenting, perfectionism, self-compassion and depressive symptoms. The review concludes with aims for future research to address the potential interconnectivity between perfectionism and self-compassion in the parenting and depression relationship.

Depression is common in the clinical presentation of multiple sclerosis (MS) and can lead to a range of adverse health outcomes. Online interventions provide a cost-effective, accessible treatment option for those who often have difficulty accessing face-to-face psychotherapy due to MS-related complications. There is preliminary evidence for the efficacy of online service delivery. However, this literature is characterised by small studies with passive control groups; methodological features which may overestimate intervention effects. This review examines the efficacy of online interventions targeted to the MS cohort, highlighting a need for high-quality randomised trials to establish a stronger evidence base.

Objective: Although risk factors associated with eating disorders (EDs) have been widely studied, prospective longitudinal studies that examine risk factors at early adolescence, before the peak age of ED onset, remain limited. The study examined the transdiagnostic model of EDs, and investigated the potential influence of body dissatisfaction, negative reactivity and self-esteem in adolescents aged 10-11, on partial-syndrome ED status at age 16-17. Method: The sample comprised of 2,372 adolescents drawn from Wave 3, 4 and 7 of the Longitudinal Study of Australian Children. Partial-syndrome ED status was measured at age 16-17 using the Branched Eating Disorder Test, to identify adolescents who met partial-criteria for anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa or binge eating disorder. The associations between risk factors at age 10-11 and partial-syndrome ED at age 16-17 were examined whilst adjusting for relevant confounding family factors at age 8-9. Results: Negative reactivity and self esteem did not show significant association with partial-syndrome ED at age 16-17. Body dissatisfaction significantly predicted partial-syndrome ED in the reverse to expected direction; dissatisfaction was associated with decreased likelihood of meeting partial syndrome ED at age 16-17. Discussion: Findings of the study suggest that the transdiagnostic model of EDs may not represent well the risk factors of EDs in early adolescence. Body dissatisfaction, negative reactivity and self-esteem may be sensitive to time and changes throughout adolescence in their predictive ability for subsequent ED development in late adolescence. Further research is needed to understand the developmental trajectory of these factors in adolescence.

Since the advent of the Internet, pornography use has proliferated, covarying with increasing rates of Internet pornography (IP) addiction. However, IP addiction is a contentious concept because there are no definitive criteria for it and because it falls under the relatively unexplored category of behavioural additions. In this article, we review various domains of the related literature, such as estimated rates of IP use and problematic use, and evidence that IP use can become addictive including a neuroscientific perspective. We then consider the cognitive mechanisms that may be involved in IP addiction, before offering some directions for future research.

Depression during adolescence has been linked to an increased risk for non-suicidal self-harm and suicidal ideation both preceding risk factors for suicide. However, young people are unlikely to seek help for mental health problems. Given that this group routinely use online services to connect with others and seek information, smartphone applications (‘apps’) present a possible treatment modality. This review critically examines the development and application of apps in the self-guided treatment of depression, self-harm and suicidal ideation among youth. Findings in this area are promising, although inconsistent. Randomized controlled trials are needed to determine treatment safety and effectiveness.

Depression is one of the most commonly occurring disorders that can significantly impact an individual’s quality of life and often leads to increased morbidity and mortality. This paper reviews the existing literature on the prevalence and impact of major depressive disorder. It explores the ongoing issues associated with help-seeking and examines factors that influence or impede individuals accessing help. Research about patient preferences, expectations and satisfaction with treatment for depression are reviewed in the context of both pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy. Limitations of current research, including ongoing discrepancies across the literature, are presented, and recommendations for future research are discussed. In particular, the work concludes that there should be a greater focus on understanding individual perspectives and experiences in more naturalistic community settings, with less emphasis on the use of clinical trial data.

Objective: To examine the current evidence for the use of art therapy in Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) interventions among school-aged children. Background: Symptoms of ADHD often result in functional impairments among school-aged children, as well as associated socioemotional difficulties such as emotion dysregulation. Art therapy may be a promising age-appropriate alternative to common non-pharmacological clinical interventions for ADHD such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). Methods: We used a scoping review to investigate the current uses of art therapy in ADHD interventions. We conducted a systematic review of the literature and synthesized the current evidence through a descriptive analysis. Results: 13 studies met the inclusion criteria for analysis, which included art therapy as a primary intervention for school-aged children who met diagnostic criteria for ADHD. The review reflected limited research, with case studies comprising of the bulk of current research. This was sufficient for a thematic analysis, which identified key themes in the current uses of art therapy such as facilitating self-expression and behavioural management. Conclusion: While further evidence may be required before art therapy is incorporated into practice, current literature lends an understanding to how it can be used, either as a complement or promising alternative for treatment-resistant ADHD.

Early contact with the youth justice (YJ) system leads to poorer health, wellbeing and recidivism. However, there is little known about how early versus late YJ contact (i.e., before age 14 versus age 14 or older) influences YJ contact patterns, or whether early life circumstances and associated outcomes differ by early versus late YJ contact. This study uses whole-of-population linked data to examine differences between young people who have early versus late YJ system contact. Data were from the Better Evidence Better Outcomes Linked Data (BEBOLD) platform including children in South Australia born 1991-1998, followed from birth to age 18 (n=169,172), of which 1.9% had YJ contact. Compared to the late contact group, young people with early YJ contact had: more serious YJ contact patterns (e.g., 91% versus 59% ever experienced custodial supervision); were more disadvantaged at birth (e.g., 63% versus 44% born into jobless families); had more serious child protection contact by age 10 (e.g., 40% versus 27% had experienced out-of-home care); and experienced more mental health-related hospitalisations from ages 12-18 (e.g., 48% versus 35%). This analysis demonstrates the complex circumstances that precede and co-occur with YJ involvement and point to the need for investment in early supports.

For psychologists, working effectively with older adults (aged 65+ years) requires awareness of the nuanced aspects of psychotherapy with this group. These include the clinical effectiveness of modifying psychotherapy, the variables that influence treatment outcomes such as older adults’ characteristics (e.g., physical comorbidities) or non-specific therapeutic factors (e.g., therapeutic alliance), and psychologists’ own personal reactions towards older clients. This narrative review examined the current knowledge about these clinically-relevant factors. The findings revealed a gap between theory, research, and practice in terms of how psychotherapy fares with older adults in real practice. More extensive, targeted research exploring the nuanced aspects of working with older adults can advance understanding about what may promote or interfere with their therapeutic progress. Ultimately, this can improve the care provided for this growing client base.

The aim of the present study was to examine the effectiveness of psychological interventions in alleviating death anxiety. An umbrella review (a review of systematic reviews) was undertaken in accordance with the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) methodology and PRISMA guidelines. Eligibility criteria were systematic reviews on psychological interventions to reduce death anxiety among adults. Systematic reviews that contained an exhaustive search strategy, use of appropriate appraisal tools, utilized quantitative methods, and were published in English were considered. Two systematic reviews were deemed eligible to be included in this umbrella review comprising 24 individual studies of psychological interventions such as cognitive behavioural therapy, meaning-oriented therapies and death education interventions. Participants included adults with and without terminal illness. Findings indicate low quality evidence supporting the effectiveness of psychological interventions for death anxiety. Recommendations highlight the need for future research following rigorous methodology and use of more recently developed psychological interventions.

People with refugee backgrounds face poorer psychological outcomes than general populations post-resettlement. Contributing to these outcomes are post-migration challenges including experiences with healthcare services. These services include perinatal healthcare, which is essential for many refugee women living in Australia; many of whom are from Africa. Positive perinatal healthcare experiences are pivotal for ensuring women’s access to ongoing care and healthy psychological outcomes. However, disparities persist between refugee and non-refugee populations. This review will critically evaluate the evidence regarding African refugee women’s psychological wellbeing following experiences with perinatal healthcare services, and will inform an empirical study in the Australian context.

Stillbirth rates in Australia have remained stable in the past 20 years, with some 2,000 families affected each year. Despite this, research into the multi-dimensional impact of stillbirth remains limited. Most research to date focusses on the immediate needs of bereaved mothers, particularly grief and the response of health professionals in hospital settings. What is needed from research is a deeper understanding of the impact of stillbirth on fathers, siblings, grandparents, family systems, mental health, relationships, employment and workplace productivity. The relationship between the experience of stillbirth and social constructs, gender, parenting, stigma and attachment also requires closer attention. Surprisingly, the economic impact of stillbirth is poorly described. The direct and indirect costs of stillbirth in Australia from 2016-2020 is estimated to sum $681 million highlighting the need for action to reduce stillbirth and its devastating and pervasive impacts on those bereaved, and Australian society.

Religion and spirituality are universal concepts which provide significant platforms of meaning for many people (Pargament, 1999). However, traditional psychology training programs have typically omitted these issues (Brawer, Handal, Fabricatore, Roberts and Wadja-Johnston, 2002; Shafranske, 2001), thus neglecting an important dimension of human experience. The present study involved sending a survey questionnaire to all lecturers, coordinators and directors involved in psychology masters programmes within South Africa. This study explores the extent to which religious and spiritual issues are currently included in masters programmes, the perceptions of those involved regarding religious and spiritual issues, and possible ways of integrating these issues within the existing program. Within an integrative framework, results are analysed descriptively, using content analysis for the qualitative responses. Current inclusion of religious and spiritual issues within psychology training programs is varied between modules and universities, and the perceptions of those involved regarding inclusion is ambivalently in favour. Integrating religious and spiritual issues into existing modules is generally favoured.

This study seeks to explore students’ subjective and collective experience of an experiential family therapy module within the Clinical Psychology Masters training programme. It looks at the perceptions of nine trainee therapists who used genograms and family sculpting to present their family of origin. The study takes place after the completion of the practical internship year with the purpose of exploring relevant emotional, cognitive, social and therapeutic effects of this module. A literature survey reveals that the use of genograms and family sculpting during training has received little research interest as most studies have primarily focused on their use during therapy with clients and in supervision. There is a scarcity of literature available that pertains directly to psychologists themselves and their wider social context. An exploratory review has been made to supplement the literature and pertains to experiential programmes in training in general and the psychologist’s self in training. The epistemology that directs this research falls within a postmodern frame. The experience is viewed from within the broad systems perspective. This approach acknowledges the dynamic and recursive interactions which occur between and within systems, and permits a broad perspective to be taken that is inclusive rather than exclusive. A qualitative research design was selected as it lends itself particularly well to the study of the ‘lived realities’ of people within their context and allows the information gained from the study to guide the research process. Semi-structured open-ended in-depth interviews were used as they allow for greater freedom and fewer restrictions regarding direction for the participant. A thematic analysis was carried out in order for the central themes of the experience to emerge. These themes were discussed extensively and integrated with the literature available. The multigenerational family presentation seems to create greater awareness of patterns and roles and these insights have a pervasive impact in many contexts. Understandably, the trainees feel emotionally overwhelmed as they become both observer and observed, viewing their interaction from a third-person perspective. This awareness of process results in a loss of spontaneous response and initial debilitation which is associated with feelings of loss and isolation. The self-exploratory behaviour gives rise to a reflexive reconstruction of self as a result of the access to new meanings regarding the dynamics and relationships within the family system, which enhances understanding of the complex interplay of systems, and ultimately facilitates the processes of integration, repair and resolution.

The mimicry of Europe and United States of America (US) in South African psychology in the early 1900s and the continual presence of Euroamericanised psychology continues to marginalise Black, poor, and working-class people. In this dissertation, I investigated the misalignment of counselling and clinical psychologists’ professional training, specifically the first-year Masters psychology training programme with the South African socio-political context. To counter the usual reliance on hegemonic Euroamerican-centric approaches I elaborated on an Africa(n)-centred perspective so as to make sense of the training of counselling and clinical psychologists in the South African context. I argued that the Africa(n)-centred perspective was pluriversal (accepting of multiple epistemologies), endogenous (developing from within), and focuses on Africans not as the excluded Other but rather as the Subject at the centre of their lifeworlds. I elucidated curriculum practices within the professional training programmes as part of the investigation into the intransigence of Euroamerican-centric epistemologies in the professional training curriculum. I conducted in-depth semi-structured interviews with 23 people, 8 of whom were course coordinators and 15 intern psychologists. The participants were from 5 universities falling into the 4 generic categories: Historically Black University (HBU), Historically White Afrikaans-speaking University (HWASU), merged university (MU), and Historically White English-speaking University (HWESU). For my analysis, I employed what I termed an Africa(n)-centred critical discourse analysis, which builds on the discursive turn in psychology, taking seriously the talk of people in the reproduction of socially unjust practices. All the interviews with the course coordinators and intern psychologists were dominated by talk of race and the Professional Board for Psychology. The interviews yielded a number of discourses, namely: 1) meritocracy, 2) diversity (which referenced issues of race, gender, and curriculum), 3) access, exclusion and privilege as related to language, 4) class, and 5) relevance (including social, market, and cultural relevance, with cultural relevance spoken about in relation to the curriculum). I conclude the dissertation by gesturing towards a constructive engagement (by which I mean a building) of an Africa(n)-centred professional training of counselling and clinical psychologists.
